T

he head of Grupo Os Mosqueteiros, which owns the Intermarché brand of supermarkets in Portugal, delivered a fat cheque to the Refúgio Boim Ascensão* in Faro yesterday. The €15,000 donation was the result of the ‘votes for happy holidays’ promotion that ran over the Christmas and New Year period. Shoppers were asked to send their good wishes to four institutions, among them the Refúgio Aboim Ascensão. These 'good wish' votes were transformed into financial support, guaranteeing a better financial year for the institutions involved which include Associação Acreditar, Comunidade Vida e Paz and the Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos do Animal. "This project has filled us with pride. Pride for being part of a group that has strong values of solidarity which it practices day to day," said the supermarket chief, adding, “We asked the Portuguese to wish happy holidays to the institutions of their choice and we turn those wishes into financial support, so that these institutions in 2019 can move forward with their projects. “We want to give back to the local community and society in general what it brings us. It was this wish of giving back that led us to create the initiative," said João Magalhães, the head of Grupo Os Mosqueteiros. * Refugio Aboim Ascensão is a private internationally recognized non-profit Christian Charity organization working to better the lives of abused, abandoned and neglected children under the age of six.

Algarve's first Gastronomy Congress in Faro this Month

iding on the wave of interest in the region’s food, the first Congress of Gastronomy of the Algarve is being launched in Faro this

March. The three day event is a blend the latest in food innovation, plenty of tastings and debates on food, sustainability and the future of gastronomy in the region. "The goal is to bring together the best in the region and create a forum where we can discuss real issues and share ideas," commented Maria Nobre de Carvalho, the event organiser. The venue is the Algarve Hotel and Tourism

School in Faro with ample room for debates, demonstrations, tastings, the presentation of new cooking techniques and explanation of the trends that are shaping the industry across the region. "The concept of the event is not new, but it is the first time it has been done in the Algarve. We are in a very rich gastronomic area and, as such, it makes sense to create a space that is a reference for gastronomy in the Algarve," said the organiser. By bringing together some of the best chefs in the country, professionals from the world of catering and tourism, brand ambassadors, sommeliers and mixologists, the Algarve gastronomy congress will

give the best professionals in the sector an informal environment in which to make contacts and show what’s new and innovative. Anyone who has a passion for food, drink and innovation will benefit, whether working in a restaurant or bar, for a supplier or manufacturer or working in a hotel. The purpose of the event is to bring together people from all areas of the industry and offer a unique platform for sharing knowledge, information and inspiration. Keeping your dog cool

S

How regular grooming can keep your dog cool in the warmer weather.

o many of the dogs we groom and care for at The Spotted Dog have moved here from milder climes and the question often arises as to how best grooming can help keep our furry loved ones cool in the much warmer climate of the Eastern Algarve. It’s often tempting to think that a shorn or even shaved coat will keep them cool, but it’s rarely the best option. In some ways a dog’s fur / coat is like a thermos; it keeps them cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so a shaved coat doesn’t necessarily mean a cooler dog. In fact, cutting them too short can have a detrimental effect. It’s also worth bearing in mind that dogs don’t actually stay cool the same way as us HOOMANS! Unlike us, dogs don’t sweat through their skin, rather they sweat through the pads of their paws and mainly keep themselves cool by panting. In addition to offering a kind of built-in air conditioning, your dog's coat offers protection against sun damage. Your dog can get sunburned just like you, so any place on their body with too short or too little hair is susceptible to sunburn. Here are a few do’s and don’ts for keeping your dog cool and helping them adjust to a warmer climate. DO keep long-haired dogs clipped. This will help cut down on the time you spend brushing, and prevent knots and mats. The majority of dogs only need a trim every six to eight weeks but dogs with particularly curly or long coats probably need to visit a groomer more often.

8

DON’T shave your dog down to the skin. This can lead to sunburn and cause the coats of certain breeds to grow back all wrong. DO bathe your dog if they become dirty or smelly. Use a gentle shampoo formulated for dogs (no HOOMAN! shampoos please!). The bath should be lukewarm, since hot water can burn or dry out the skin. Make sure to avoid the head and eyes, rinse well, and towel off afterwards. DON’T bathe your dog too often. Frequent bathing can strip away essential oils, leading to itchy skin and a brittle coat. DO check your dog’s ears, eyes, coat, skin and paw pads regularly. DON’T forget to administer good quality flea and tick preventative. These pests are not only an irritant and make your dog anxious, they can cause serious health issues. There are of course many other ways of keeping our dogs cool during the warmer weather such as providing them frozen treats; a frozen plastic bottle of water in their beds; cooling mats and collars, a little paddling pool (!); a damp cool towel to rest upon, and only walking during the cooler parts of the day and ensuring they have a healthy supply of fresh cool water at all times. By having your pet professional groomed on a regular basis, and brushing them between grooming’s, you can optimise your pet’s physical and mental health, and help keep them cool as temperatures increase. More information on the benefits of professional dog grooming are available on our website at https://www.thespotteddog.net/

Café

À da Marta Located in the center of Tavira, meet Marta, owner of Cafe À da Marta with a menu which includes dishes of Paleo.

C

hic simple and stylish the street café “À da Marta” lies just off the main square in the beautiful East Algarve gem of Tavira. Owner Marta, from the town studied at the University in Faro before spending many years in Switzerland where her daughter was born. This is were she learnt that the Swiss combine the Paleo diet known as the caveman way of eating, which removes processed foods and additives and promotes a natural way of eating healthily, as part of a way of life. Marta mixes this Paleo way of thinking with what we eat in everyday foods at “À da Marta”. Her own business, she makes home made dishes mixing this philosophy with an everyday regular diet. The Paleo diet is fast becoming not only a trend but a recognized

10

way of how our diets once were and with this the health benefits are tremendous. Delicious dishes and snacks, full of flavor and 100 per cent unique are served. She has created her own recipes using natural ingredients and offers these as part of the regular menu. Coffees, specialist teas, cold refreshing drinks, as well as Croissants, Muffins, both sweet and savoury for a quick bite or Chicken, Salmon and Avocado Wraps with salad, tomato, onions or Feta Cheese and yogurt, Salad da Marta, Quiche or various Toasts for lunch maybe? Everything is prepared freshly and offer the Paleo option, as well as Gluten free and Oat milk if that is your preference. The dishes of the day combine both hearty meals and snacks and are great value. To eat well in the very best surroundings we would

highly recommend a visit, watch the Tavira world go by, you never know what you might see whilst having the option to have eaten healthily. Marta is celebrating almost a year of her new business and it is already a place where the locals and tourists frequent regularly, from breakfast onwards. Sit in the morning sun on the terrace or chill inside with relaxing up beat background music. It was a pleasure seeing it so busy and we wish her much continued success. livier is a French artist from Neuilly sur Seine. His acrylic and oil paintings reveal an awareness of space and an understanding of the architectural construction of objects. A Russian spying shape and form Beth Jackson meets world kown Russian artist Soren who now enjoys the simple life, creating works of art here in the East Algarve

T

ucked away among the hills and valleys of Santa Catarina lives one of the most interesting and gifted people it has been my privilege to meet: Soren. Russian born, left the Iron Curtain behind in 1977. Since then his art has been exhibited in many places over the world, including Lisbon, Stockholm, Japan, South Africa, Oslo, Zimbabwe, New York…and Almancil! Beth: Was it difficult for you to leave Russia back then? Soren: I was married to a Norwegian citizen, so that is why I was allowed…not rapidly, it took maybe 3 years, but I was finally allowed to immigrate to reunite with the family. I was in Norway for 2 years, then went to New York as a student. I got a green card while I was there and lived in New York for 17 years before I came to Portugal, to find a more simple life. Beth: Were you always painting during that time? Soren: I had a gap of about 7 years while I was in New York. I was doing graphic design…book covers…illustration. Beth: So, you have always lived off your art. That is a real achievement, Soren. Soren: It was a matter of being lucky to meet good people, good art

director, things like this. Moira Forjaz, for example, who had many exhibitions in her gallery in Lisbon and introduced me to her friends in many different countries. Berardo bought a painting. He put it in his (famous) art collection. Beth: Your training, Soren? Did you go to art college? Soren: Yes, Stroganov School of Art in Moscow for 5 years. It was like a college for applied arts; they were preparing people to be ceramists, sculptors, interior designers; more like connected with industry. And the Art Student League in New York. Beth: Your mother, she was an artist, wasn’t she? Soren: My mother was a ceramist. My grandmother was a textile designer; and my uncle, he was in graphic design and all the great uncles… they were all connected with art, yeah. Beth: Did they show you things when you were a child? Soren: I used to live within all of their works. The famous Armenian artist; Saryan was a relative. His wife was the sister of my grandmother. He is considered to be one of the greatest Armenian artists. I grew up with a portrait which he painted of my mother in 1943/44, hanging just above my bed, so I was always looking at it. Beth: Quite an inspiration! (You should Google this guy, folks: Martiros

Saryan) Soren: Yes, especially seeing how with a simple touch, how he accomplished the painting. Because sometimes you think that you have to paint every nail, and every finger, but you don’t have to. His example, for example…in that painting sometimes he touched very well, sometimes he would leave it half finished. Beth: I believe you are exhibiting in Moscow again? Soren: Yes, this summer (2018) there was a big exhibition in the Moscow Museum of Architecture. We chose to do it there because of the space in the court yard…it has 3 floors…a big space! And last year there was an exhibition in the Museum of classical photography. It was an exhibition of photography and art. So I have had 2 exhibitions in Moscow in the last 2 years. Beth: That’s great. Soren: Before then, I don’t know (laugh) it was a very long time ago. Before I left Russia in 1977! Indeed, that is more than 40 years ago. How incredible it is for Soren to now be embraced by the homeland he left so long ago, in the highest heights of the art community there. Although I did not ask, I think he is very pleased about it, because his mobile phone number is Russian!

Restaurante

Petiscais In the words of a customer; "Magnificent Space, minimalist and intimate decoration. Magnificently cooked food". Restaurante Petiscais is a must visit for food lovers

T

he coastal town of OlhĂŁo is the largest fishing village in the Algarve and just ten minutes by car or train from Faro. The adjoining Olhao railway station building is Petiscais restaurant, a new stylish concept bringing culinary delights from one of the most iconic buildings in the town. Built in 1903 it was inaugurated on May 15th 1904 when the first train from Faro stopped at OlhĂŁo station. The location is called Covered Key and has been used as a warehouse for exporting fish, salt and octopus as well as coal, building materials, fertilizers, rice and seeds. The restoration project is

16

the brainchild of entrepreneurs, Rui and Andreia Oliveira; Rui from Lisbon and Andreia and her family, locals. Worldwide travel and experience in other business ventures have brought their dream and this spectacular project together. Rui and Andreia have a young family and live locally, taking care of the day to day running of the restaurant, giving that essential personal touch. Together with Chef Marcel Van Der Luis from Holland with his knowledge from working in Italy and Paris, they bring together a unique surrounding, professional and attentive service with culinary delights. The restoration project has been immense and after opening in December 2018 they

have already built an international clientele. As well as being previously used for storage, the building provided a workshop to support and maintain the railway infrastructure and social services for railway workers and the originality can be seen in the detail and artifacts. The ambience is chic and chilled and the menu is made up of their own family recipes with a modern, individual twist, always using fresh ingredients and based on health and well being. Tempting are the Tempura Prawns, Corn Flower with Shrimp or Monkfish Rice as well as Beef Steak with various Sauces, Tapas, Crepes or the Dish of the Day from 8 euros, the menu will not fail to delight. hether you are selling in a buyer’s or seller’s market, selling your home can be quite difficult and stressful. Few situations are more emotionally draining than struggling to sell your home after you put it on the market. Especially when you can’t wait to move on. If you want to sell your home in a reasonable time frame and with confidence, you’ll need to know all of your options so you can make an informed decision that best aligns with your current circumstances and goals. What can you do to attract buyers to sell your home in a timely manner? Land & House Algarve – Yellow Homes compiled a list of useful tips. From developing a strong online presence to making your home move-in ready, these tips can help shorten the time between listing and selling your home. We also offer alternatives in case your property just won’t sell. List your house with a real estate agent who has a proven track record Finding the right real estate agent is the first step and one that should not be taken lightly. To navigate a process involving property documentation and back-and-forth communications between agent, homeowner and prospective buyer, it is advisable to have a professional assisting you. A licensed and reputable real estate agent has the resources to properly list your house. Beyond that, their experience can potentially save you thousands of euros and time. The right agent will understand your needs and then tailor the services to your end goal in any market. Creating a strong online presence is a crucial component of the whole marketing strategy. The job of an agent is also to guide the vendor through necessary house preparation and small repairs, to price the house correctly, propose and execute a marketing strategy to promote the listing, going over the property documentation with you making sure all is accurate and updated in order for a seamless transaction when agreement has been reached with the prospective buyer. In addition they will qualify the buyer before a potential viewing to ensure that the property is within budget and fulfils their needs and expectations. This avoids timewasting and frustrating viewings. During a viewing make yourself scarce. After all you are paying the agent, let them do their job. They know what to say and how to say it. Engage a law firm Selling or buying a home will probably be

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Property one of the largest and most significant events you will make in your life. It involves property laws which can be unique to the area which can raise special issues/problems not present in other transactions. An experienced real estate lawyer is trained to deal with these issues. Without an expert to keep track of all the intricacies of the transaction, you cannot necessarily count on the sale to go quickly or smoothly. Be realistic with your listing price Nothing kills a real estate deal faster than an over-priced property. An experienced agent will have good knowledge of the local market and will research the prices of listed and recently sold homes in and around your neighbourhood before putting your house on the market. This is not to say that you shouldn’t participate in the price decision but just don’t let your ego get in the way. Having a realistic asking price is critical to sell a home quickly and doesn’t necessarily mean lowest price. Homebuyers are smart and better informed than ever. They know when a property is overpriced and simply ignore it. Don’t let your listing go stale! Communication with your listing agent is crucial. Ask the agent for advice and remember the suggestions made when listing the property. Simply lowering the asking price is not always needed. Prepare the house for viewings A good preparation is everything! You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression. This means it is vital that your property is presented in the best way possible. Make sure everything is in good working order. A prospective buyer can lose interest quickly when for instance an electric gate or lights switches are not working and may start wondering what else is wrong with the property. Make sure this does not happen to you. Inside Preparing your home for viewers, or “staging” as it’s called, is important and it is the key to creating a pleasant environment. It will not only ensure your property is sold faster but can potentially add thousands of euros to its value. Declutter and ask your agent to advise you on this. You need to strike a balance between a homely and welcoming environment versus an unwelcome sterile property. This can be an art and some agents are better at it then others! You want to create an ambiance where your buyer is able to imagine your property as their home, not yours. Needless to say that if you are serious about selling, any maintenance issues need to be resolved before listing. The exterior and landscaping When buyers first see your home, they are apprehensive and are looking for potential issues. Any that doesn’t match what they saw online. The first thing they will look at is the house and the outside area. That’s why the roof should to be in good condition. The entrance gate should open properly and the front door and garage doors should be freshened up. If windows have peeling paint or the brick is cracked or damaged, buyers will start to get the impression the home needs work. The more they see, the more work they imagine

www.eastalgarvemag.com

could be there. Again, the first impression is so important. After looking at the house, the buyers will look at the garden. Your garden should complement your property. Buyers are looking at the whole picture and evaluating it all. The garden should be as tidy as possible. Dead leaves are best removed, the grass cut and if needed, power wash your driveway and sidewalk before a viewing. If there are weeds everywhere, the buyers will only be thinking about the work. If the house has a nice pool please make sure that the water level is right and the water clean. Keep the pets away Pets are family. But they’re your family. You may be accustomed to or not be aware of the scent which can put buyers off. If in doubt, ask a good friend for their honest opinion. Be aware that some buyers are allergic to animals. When they see a cat or dog they are already on their way out. Let the Light In and light the fire Most buyers want to see that a home has plenty of natural light. Remove heavy draperies and open up the shutters or blinds. Maybe hide an unattractive view with window coverings that still allow in light. Need some extra light? Add lamps in any dark areas. On a dark day, switch on as many lights as possible. If it’s a cold evening or a chilly day, light your fire. Consider burning some pinecones for a delicious smell. This will make your home feel warm and inviting. If you don’t have a fire on then at least ensure the fireplace is clean. Obvious conversions If there are any obvious conversions or extensions such as a pool or turning the garage into extra rooms or opening up the loft, why not take advantage and capitalize? Many buyers are not interested in going through this process themselves. They just want something suitable that is ready to move in. Of course any alterations and extensions should be subject to planning permission. If you don’t have enough spare cash for alterations then consider getting planning permission. This can add value to your property. Urgent sale: Sell for less than market value. Making a steep price reduction can be a solution when nothing else seems to be working. Your property instantaneously becomes the best buy in the area. If this doesn’t work consider selling for less than replacement value. Its an option that should only be used under extreme circumstances if you urgently require liquidity. Speak with your agent and/or change your real estate agent in case they appear to have lost interest. Final Thoughts Your goal as a vendor is for your property to appeal to as many potential buyers as possible. This time it really isn’t personal. It may not easy but it’s business and it’s time to depersonalize. Land and Houses Algarve – Yellow Homes has been successful at selling properties in the Algarve for more than 20 years (actually almost 25 years). We have a wealth of experience to assist you and can guide you every step of the way.

At the moment, we are experiencing a seller's market in most of the areas in Portugal. It is indeed a fabulous time to sell and we hope that you have enjoyed our suggestions on what you can do when you have decided to sell your property. This can be a property that for some is a second home and for others a home filled with memories. Just keep in mind that timing and preparation is everything in real estate sales. With more property sales than property listings we are more eager than ever to list quality properties or plots particularly around the areas of Tavira, Praia Verde, Manta Rota, Fuzeta, Sta Catarina, Sao Bras and Loule. If you are considering selling your property and would like to speak with a member of our team then please call us now on 281 320 281 to make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you soon. In any event best of luck getting your home sold! The Benefits of Social Singing One hour of group singing lowers stress hormone, Cortisol – says Russell Scott.

L

ike many choral enthusiasts, Russell Scott, producer, vocal coach, and founder of the UK Choir Festival, makes impressive claims about how singing in a choir improves physical and mental health. How true are these claims? Are they backed by science? Actually, yes. They are. If you ask someone what comes to mind when they think about singing in a choir, is it going to be the numerous health benefits? Probably not. As a choir director, I have no doubt that choral singing has a transformative effect on health, both mentally and physically. Singing in a choir will do amazing things for you. It will: 1. Make you feel good with endorphins and better circulation. It is widely known that the body’s “feelgood” hormones (endorphins) are released during exercise, laughing or even eating chocolate. It is less well-known, however, that the same hormones are released when someone performs as part of a choir. The deep breaths taken during singing equates to that of aerobic exercise, which increases blood flow and releases endorphins. 2. Enhance your immune system, help you fight cancer. A study found that just one hour of group singing significantly lowers the stress hormone Cortisol, and boosts a person’s immune system, which, it has been suggested, can even help fight cancer.

30

Research conducted alongside a choir in Frankfurt found that the group produced antibodies in the blood that are known to enhance the immune system and fight off excess bad bacteria. 3. Reduce your stress. The stress-relieving benefits of choir singing have been widely recognized, and have been verified by the lowered Cortisol levels found in the study mentioned above. Reduced stress, endorphins and the positive emotions felt during group singing contribute to a “high” that singers often experience after rehearsals. 4. Increase social fulfilment. Studies have found that after just one group singing class, participants feel closer to each other than when participating in other group classes. Oxytocin, the hormone associated with love, trust and bonding has been associated with collective singing, which may be related to the close bonds of friendship among choirs and singing groups. Other social benefits include meeting people with similar passions and combatting loneliness, and, I have seen firsthand how choirs can even help with grieving and healing after a loss. 5. Boost your self-esteem. A further social benefit of singing in a choir is the educational side, as participants broaden their understanding of music. Learning something new boosts self-esteem and confidence whilst stimulating the mind and memory of older singers… and maybe

even stop snoring? Singing is known to tone the throat muscles, with a past study suggesting that this can reduce snoring – excellent news if you are the long-suffering partner of a snorer! Go for it! Group singing creates a true escape from the real world, giving participants something on which to focus 100% of their mind. In my work with choirs, I have seen how singing as part of an organised group helped many people with their struggles, including work stress and relationship issues. I encourage people from all backgrounds to experience the benefits of group singing in a relaxed and informative way by joining a local choir or signing up for a local choir festival. What you can do? Join an existing choir or start a new choir. Send us your ideas or suggestions and we will list those of interest in our next issue. The Tavira Pop Choir meets on Sunday afternoons in the Event Hall of the Quinta da Fonte do Bispo, on the EN270, just east of Santa Catarina. We have a multi-national membership and all are welcome as it is a social gathering. Currently, we start at 2.30 but please Email for confirmation as this occasionally changes. Incidentally, if you enjoy dancing as you sing, then you might enjoy our “Sixties Night” at the Talabriga Bar, just east of the military (old wooden) bridge, in central Tavira. Quilting

Self-Healing Cutting Mat Buying Guide:

How to Select and Maintain Cutting Mats What is a cutting mat? How do you choose the right cutting mat for the job? Here are a few things to look for when selecting quality cutting mats and how to properly care for them.

T

hey protect the work surface from damage, and prevent your knife blade from dulling quickly. Cutting mats are described as either hard-surface or selfhealing (soft surface). Hard-surface mats are more rigid and more rugged, since the blade skims over the mat surface without cutting into it. Self-healing types are thinner and more flexible and usually have a thin layer of coloured vinyl on the cutting surface. Cutting blades create tiny scratches in the mat surface that reclose afterward; thus, the description "self-healing." Both types are appropriate for designers, sewing, quilting, sign-making, printing, hobbies, crafts, and many other uses. Thickness - Self healing cutting mats are generally either 2 millimetres (mm) or 3 mm in thickness. 2 mm mats have more of a plastic texture and are often either too smooth or too rough. 2 mm mats are often referred to as "hobby craft mats" and are not suitable for straight knife use. 2 mm mats generally have thin cores which makes them much more susceptible to cut-though. 2mm mats are more of a "hobby grade" mat and are not a professional-grade mat. A sign of a poor-quality cutting mat is one where the laminations have separated. What Tools Can Be Used? - When looking for a cutting mat, make sure it is suitable for both rotary and straight knives. Most 2 mm "hobby" mats are not suitable for straight

32

knives. To prevent leaving cut marks in a self-healing cutting mat, always make sure your knife is sharp. Change blades often. Remember that most any plastic surface will leave a knife mark when used with dull knives. Don't spend big €€€ on a cutting mat and skimp on knife blades. Surface Texture - Texture and glare are important. Too smooth a texture and the items you are trying to cut have a tendency to slip. In addition, some mats are shiny and reflect light. Too much texture and it affects the consistency of your cut. The mat should have a medium "tooth" made of a non-glare surface; one that is not too slick or too rough. Thin, 2 mm mats and hobbygrade mats have a tendency to have either too little or too much tooth. Measurements - You should look for a mat that is graduated and fully numbered on all four sides of the mat. Hash lines should extend past the board of the mat on all four sides. The hash lines and full graduations on all sides help with alignment. How Long Will It Last? - Cutting mats eventually wear out, they do not last forever. Most of them are designed to last for years, depending on how they are used. However, most any material will show a knife mark unless it is made of stone or hard metal. Do not be alarmed if you can see the knife marks. Performance and longevity is dependent on several things: ● Type of material being cut

● Type of knife being used ● Sharpness of cutting blade ● Cutting pressure by user ● Please be sure always use sharp, new blades when cutting and change blades often. ● Rotate your mat often to avoid frequent cuts in the same area. Storage - It is best to store all cutting mats flat; do not roll them. Improperly stored mats will warp and are impossible to repair. Keep your mats away from heat such as direct sunlight to prevent warping. Don't leave it in a hot car and do not store it in an attic. Avoid storing in a cold room to prevent brittleness and cracking. Most larger mats are shipped rolled. Remove rolled cutting mats from their packages immediately. Do not store them rolled. Cleaning - To prolong the life of any cutting mat, keep it clean. We recommend using your favourite all-purpose household spray cleaner or warm water and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleansers and solvents that can damage the mat or remove the printed markings. Use a lint roller, a napped lint brush or a simple pencil eraser to remove surface lint and fabric crumbs. A nylon net scrubber can be used to loosen any stubborn dirt or debris on your cutting mat. Microfiber cleaning cloths/towels can also be used to remove tiny fibres from knife cuts on your cutting mats.

Gardening Planting stone pine Stone pine is usually planted in autumn, but can sometimes still be planted up to the months of March or April as long as it is not cold. Stone pine loves dry soil and hates moist soil. They require proper drainage and can be planted in a bed of earth and sand. Although stone pine is hardy down to 14°F (-10°C), young specimens are vulnerable to freezing. Mulch around the base to prevent weeds. Pruning stone pine Stone pine is a conifer for which pruning is important enough to deserve a bit of advice. Since stone pine grows rather slowly, it can be pruned to resemble a parasol or umbrella. Of course it would take this shape naturally, but pruning can speed it up. Stone pine can die if the pruning is improperly performed. Maintenance pruning for stone pine This pruning means to eliminate dried sprigs as they appear, as well as weaker branches and those that tend to grow downwards. Pruning is usually performed in autumn, before the cold sets on, but it may very well occur in summer after the spring growth. You can remove the branches of the lower trunk, but take care to always leave intact the two topmost stages of branches. Thin the stone pine out a bit to let light and sun filter through to the heart of the conifer. With a few snips of the loppers, remove the least vigorous branches, those growing inside or crossing each other. Try to consider keeping a balanced shape that stays natural and harmonious. Once the branches are pruned, cover the wounds with pruning paste such as pine tar to stop appearance of disease and fungus. Cutting the crown of a stone pine This question comes back often: can the crown top of

the stone pine be cut off? The clear answer is, no. If a stone pine loses its head, it will die. More about stone pine Pinus pinea is famous for its silhouette shaped like a parasol and for the fact that it grows everywhere along the Mediterranean area and Iberian peninsular Its brown red bark, as it breaks up at midheight, is just as ornamental as its clear green leafage. But there is still more to make this conifer one of the most majestic of all because even its fruits have a purpose. Pine nuts are used in cooking, especially to prepare pastries and salad, since it has a slight almond-like taste, and it bears many health benefits for the body. Stone pine fruits only reach maturity every three years. The country that produces the largest quantity is Spain. Pine processionary moth larvae (caterpillars) feed on the needles of pine trees and some other conifer tree species. In large numbers they can severely decimate trees, weakening them and making them more susceptible to attack by other pests or diseases, or to environmental stress caused by drought or excessive moisture. Pine processionary moth, like its close relative the oak processionary moth, gets its name from its distinctive habit of moving about in nose-to-tail processions. Like some caterpillars these represent a public and animal health hazard because they have thousands of hairs which contain an urticating, or irritating, protein called thaumetopoein. This gives rise to its scientific name. These

36

hairs can be blown by the wind into contact with people and animals, resulting in painful skin irritations and rashes and, in some cases, allergic reactions. Although single moths, and in one instance a transient population, have occasionally been found in southern England, the processionary caterpillar is not currently known to be established in the UK. However, it has been extending its range across Europe towards the English Channel.

Susceptible trees Pine trees (trees of the Pinus genus) are most susceptible to attack, with the following species being particularly susceptible: Austrian pine, Aleppo pine, Canary Island pine, lodgepole pine, maritime pine, Monterey or radiata pine, Scots pine and stone pine. Other recorded hosts include the Atlas cedar and European larch. Health precautions In affected areas take some simple precautions to help minimise the health risks to you and your pets and livestock: DO NOT: ● Touch or approach nests or caterpillars ● Let children touch or approach nests or caterpillars ● Let animals touch or approach nests or caterpillars ● Try removing nests or caterpillars yourself. DO: ● Teach children not to touch or approach the nests or caterpillars; ● Train or restrain pets from touching or approaching them; ● Keep horses and livestock away from infested trees covering or stabling them can help; ● See a pharmacist or vet for relief from skin or eye irritations after possible processionary caterpillar contact; ● See a doctor if you think you or someone in your care has had a serious allergic reaction; ● See a vet if you think your pet or livestock has been seriously affected; ● Call in a pest control expert to remove infestations in your own trees.

Expert financial advice By Dan Henderson, Partner, Blevins Franks

How to get your finances Brexit-ready

A

s Brexit approaches, make sure your financial position in Portugal is as secure as possible. Review the best currency

mix for you When living abroad and spending euros daily, it can be more expensive to take your income in sterling. You can limit exchange rate risk with investment structures that offer the flexibility to invest and make withdrawals in different currencies. Widen your investment horizons If you favour British assets when investing or are still using a UK-based adviser, your financial planning could be more suited to a UK resident than someone living in Portugal. This could result in costly mistakes and missing out on opportunities available locally that could work more favourably for your circumstances. Diversify, diversify, diversify While market movements can be unsettling, those invested for the medium to longterm in a well-diversified portfolio are best placed to see their wealth grow over time. Your financial adviser should ensure your portfolio offers the right balance of risk and return for your peace of mind. Amidst Brexit uncertainty, it is more important than ever to make sure your portfolio is not overweight in UK assets. Reduce risk – Brexit-related or otherwise – by spreading investments across regions,

asset types and market sectors to limit exposure in any one area. Get your tax planning in order There is no reason for your tax treatment in Portugal to change with Brexit, nor will it affect UK nationals’ eligibility for significant tax advantages through the non-habitual residence (NHR) scheme. There are, however, some circumstances where taxation may be affected. For example, once the UK leaves the EU/EEA, expatriates selling a Portuguese home to buy a British property will no longer be eligible for capital gains tax relief. Take personalised advice to establish whether there are any potential implications and solutions for your family’s circumstances. Review your pension options Brexit should not affect expatriates’ access to UK pension funds or transfers to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). However, the UK could potentially extend today’s 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’ to include EU/EEA-based QROPS post-Brexit, so there may be a limited time for tax-free transfers. Transferring now will shelter pension funds from future changes to UK rules and can provide flexible currency options to protect your income from fluctuating exchange rates. However, it is crucial to seek personalised, regulated pensions advice to establish the right approach for you. In any case, make sure you regularly review

your financial planning. Regardless of Brexit, your circumstances and objectives can change over time, so what is right for you now may not be suitable in years to come. A locally-based financial adviser with crossborder expertise can help you plan if and when you need to take action so you can continue enjoying your chosen lifestyle in Portugal. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. IRS Tax Return 2018: Frequently asked questions

T

he IRS delivery time will begin in the 1st of April and will run until the end of June. So now it’s that time of the year, when we need to clarify some of the questions you may have concerning this important task. In which form can I submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? All IRS tax declarations are exclusively submitted on-line, so if you don’t yet have a password to access the tax portal, it’s important to request one per each tax payer. As the tax website is only in Portuguese this may be a difficult task if you don’t understand the language, ask your accountant to get this for you. When do I need to submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? All IRS tax returns independently of the type of income earned, need to be submitted from the 1st of April until the 30th of June. What is the period covered in my Portuguese IRS tax return? The tax year in Portugal is the same as the civil year, so you declare the income from 1st of January 2018, until 31st of December 2018. Who needs to fill an IRS tax return in Portugal? All the tax residents and or the nonresidents that earned income from Portuguese source need to submit the IRS tax return. The exceptions are for residents that have earned only salaries or pensions,

from Portuguese source lower than 8.500€ per year, and when there wasn’t any tax deducted on source, and or in case they received alimony income up to 4.104€. Do I fill a joint return with my partner or a single one each? You may choose to do it either way, so it’s important to ask your accountant to simulate the two scenarios and see what is more advantageous to you. What happens if I forget to file a return or do it incorrectly? It’s important to be aware that the fines for non-compliance with the dates, can be very high. Fines can go from 37.50€ to 112,50€ for a delay of 30 days. However depending on the type of miss-conduct, mainly fraud, fines go from 375€ to 22.500€. I’m non-resident, do I need to submit a return? First of all, are you sure that you are non-resident? Do you have a fiscal representative? If not, where do you receive your IMI council tax bills? If you receive them at your property in Portugal, then most likely you are resident for tax purposes in Portugal. If you are non-resident, then you will only submit a IRS return in Portugal, if you have income from Portuguese source (this includes property rental or property sale even if you haven’t made a capital gain). I arrived in Portugal last year, do I need to submit a return? In the first year of residency, you need to

tlm:+351 281 029 059 email: info@allfinancematters.com

40

submit a tax return for the period you were in Portugal (from … to 31-12-2018). The same happens to all those that stopped being Portuguese residents in 2018, they need to submit a tax return from 01-012018 until the date they left. What happens if I have to submit tax returns in more than one country and the information is not ready before the end of June? If for any reason you don’t have all the information required to submit the tax return in Portugal by the end of June, you may submit a request in the tax portal, to allow you to submit the tax return until the end of December of the current year. When do I need to pay my IRS? After submitting your tax return the tax authorities will validate your declaration and you will receive a tax bill in the post, giving you 30 days to pay. Please note that if you intend to be away during the warmer months and don’t have a fiscal representative to receive your bills, you will incur in monthly interest charges and penalties, if paying out of date. Some suggestions to make your IRS this year a stress-free task We strongly advise our customers to prepare everything with time, in order to complete this process smoothly: PASSWORD: Make sure you and your partner have a password to access the Tax Portal. If you do not have one, request a new one immediately;

web: www.allfinancematters.com

COPY OF ID AND NIF: for you, your partner and any dependents you may have; DECLARATIONS OF INCOME: gather the statements of income and withholding taxes; BANK ACCOUNT: your IBAN will be necessary to include on your IRS return and will make any tax refund much quicker. CGT: if you have sold a property in 2018, make copies of the deeds (for purchase and for sale) and gather invoices for the real estate commission and home improvements. These can be deducted against any capital gain tax. Remember if you have a resident status but your income was earned abroad, you have to deliver along with the tax return the ‘J’ Annex which discriminates the values received abroad. There are taxation agreements in place between Portugal and several countries to avoid double taxation, so the impact this will have on your IRS will depend on several factors. If you are registered as a non-habitual resident, don’t forget you will need to fill in the Annex L and also include the IBAN information on all your bank accounts abroad. And remember, we can assist you with all this bureaucracy, please feel free to book an appointment with us and avoid any late submission fines.

P

Portugal welcomes Brits regardless of Brexit deal

ortugal has always had strong ties with the UK. The AngloPortuguese Alliance (or Aliança Luso-Britânica) between Portugal and England (succeeded by the United Kingdom), ratified at the Treaty of Windsor in 1386, is the oldest alliance in the world that is still in force. This alliance, which goes back to the Middle Ages, has served both countries well. It has been very important throughout history, influencing the participation of the United Kingdom in the Iberian Peninsular War, the UK’s major land contribution to the Napoleonic Wars and the establishment of an Anglo-American base in Portugal. In return, Portugal has aided England (and later the UK) in times of need, for example, in the First World War. Today that historic bond of friendship is as strong as ever. About 80,000 British citizens live and work in Portugal and almost 200,000 Portuguese nationals live and work in the UK. Around 3 million Brits visit Portugal every year. Britain is a huge market for a whole range of Portuguese products and Portugal is a gateway to a market of 250 million people worldwide. With Brexit on the horizon it is understandable that British folks are looking optimistically to the Anglo-Portuguese foundation for reassurance. As it stands it seems that the Portuguese government is

continuing to prevail: António Costa, Prime minister of Portugal, said existing rights of British citizens living in Portugal would continue to be respected in the event of a nodeal Brexit, including access to the national health service and the recognition of British driving licences and academic qualifications. Since the news broke of Brexit about 23,000 Britons have officially registered as residents of Portugal, but the British embassy estimates the actual number is anywhere between 45,000 and 50,000. Naturally, the Portuguese Prime minister isn't doing this out of the kindness of his heart. It is estimated that there are over 200,000 Portuguese residing in the UK and Portuguese Economy Minister, Pedro Siza Vieira, said “Lisbon hopes Britain would offer the same benefits to Portuguese citizens.” Another reason for the agreeable proposal has to do with the vital role British holidaymakers play in Portugal’s tourism industry, which contributed to 15% of the country’s annual total of 15 million-euro GDP in 2017, and one in five jobs are linked to tourism. A record 13 million tourists arrived in Portugal last year, prompting Portugal to create special airport corridors to facilitate the entry of British tourists. Considering that tourism is such a large sector of the economy, it makes sense for Portugal to make it as easy as possible for their biggest consumers to

visit. Furthermore, following the defeat of UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal in the British parliament, Portugal has made moves to secure affected businesses. The government is extending a €50 million credit line aimed at companies that trade with the UK. In theory, it will be used to help these companies adapt to new regulations as well as diversify their exports to countries other than Britain. The impact of Brexit on Portuguese businesses should not be disparaged, with a Confederação Empresarial de Portugal study carried out by Ernst & Young finding that it could reduce exports by between 15% and 26%. Moreover, the researchers found that Brexit could have an estimated negative impact on the Portuguese GDP of between 0.5% and 1%. The British government is due to present further plans in the coming weeks before the 29th March cut off point. António Costa, Prime Minister of Portugal, said he was still hopeful for a change of heart by British Lawmakers that would lead to approval of the agreement May Struck with the EU leaders for an orderly Brexit. The likely hood of Brexit is that the outcome will please neither side, yet both may just have to learn to live with it.

YOUR ROOF TOP NE Local roofing expert Jason Ashome gives us his tips

R

oofing expert Jason Ashmore has lived here in the East Algarve for 4 years, he is from Birmingham and been a qualified roofer for 32 years. The most common faults to most roofs is that the outlets are not big enough to take the water away. Your outlets are a main priority as the majority of roofs are laid to fall to them, which enables the water to drain away. Jason then finishes the roof to a high standard with insulation and tiles only cement work to surrounding parapet walls which will keeps the felt from rotting and going porous. Problems on a roof can happen to any building, but most of the issues are largely preventable through planning. Several factors will influence a roof’s service life: design quality installation, products, maintenance, roof use, abuse, and weather. The roof problems listed below are common occurrences, but through quality work and planning with an expert like Jason, most can be easily dealt with before a major, expensive problem occurs. Roof leaks. With any type of roof, if it is

44

leaking then you have a problem. Solution: A proactive preventative maintenance program can eliminate or reduce building interior water intrusion. Poor installation or workmanship. A faulty installation increases the likelihood of problems and reduces a roof system’s life expectancy. Workmanship tends to be one of the more common problems or reasons for problems down the road. Solution: Ask your contractor for a checklist specific to the roof system that should be used for information-gathering (datacollecting) and reporting. Also ask about moisture surveys. Roofs with insulation should be surveyed prior to being overlayed via non-destructive methods. Have your contractor provide a written inspection report, complete with digital photos. Clear details on any structural changes or modifications to the roof surface should also be provided to you. Lack of maintenance. There are many reasons not to neglect a roof, including financial and safety, but it’s important to have routine inspections done. Ponding water, a

base flashing that is slipping, or pitch pockets that haven’t been filled are items that can be easily spotted and fixed. Solution: To maximize roof service life, a proactive maintenance program should begin in year 1. If you wait too long to initiate the program, you will reduce the potential benefits. Punctures and the addition of penetrations. For those with single-ply roof systems, damage from foot traffic can be problematic. Solution: Limit traffic and conduct cursory inspections after tradespeople have been on the roof. Improper repairs. Using materials that are not intended for application on specific roof types can result in permanent damage. Solution: Ask your roofing contractor if they are certified from the manufacturer to install and repair your roof. Shrinkage. Single-ply roof types are unique. If you walk out onto an EPDM roof, one of the first things you’re going to look for is evidence of shrinkage. The two items most commonly seen are flashings pulling away from the wall

This installation involves the existing roof tiles treated and waterproof layers are added which includes 2 layers of 4mm high performance felt. The final finish consists of a 'Floating' tile which allows water to run underneath following the fall and down to the outlet. The waterproofing doubles as an excellent heat insulation.

VER FELT SO GOOD on how to ensure your roof stays dry and water-tight! or curb and crazing and cracking of uncured membrane, which is commonly used at perimeter and penetration flashings. Solution: Make sure you’re conducting visual inspections. Some experts recommend a minimum of two per year (late fall and early spring)‌certainly at least annually. Blistering, ridging, splitting, and surface erosion. These issues are commonly found with BUR roof systems, but can also happen in some single-ply systems. Solution: Do your homework and make sure you select a certified and licensed roofing contractor before selecting or installing your new roof. As well as maintenance Jason specializes in complete new roofs using a system of primers and 2 layers of 4mm high performance felt. Quality workmanship and honest prices contact Jason on.

Volta ao Algarve witnesses Electrifying final day

All the latest sports news from Chris Wright.

T

he 45th annual Tour de Algarve got off to a dramatic start as a pile-up blighted the final leg of the first day’s 199kms stage from Portimão to Lagos. Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck–Quick-Step) took advantage of the huge crash, that occurred seven kilometres from the finish and took out the likes of John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) and Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo), to win the stage. One crash victim who had to retire was up-and-coming Irishman Eddie Dunbar who had previously highlighted the need for greater awareness surrounding the treatment of head injuries in cycling, pointing to the lengthy period of convalescence that he required after suffering concussion two years ago. The four day event covered 778.9kms (483.7 miles) of the Algarve’s roads, tracks and highways. Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen came back from a late mechanical problem to win stage four with a superb sprint finish as the crowds turned out in force to watch as some of the world’s top cyclists came hurtling into Tavira. 20 year-old Slovenian Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) was the sensational overall winner of the Volta ao Algarve just two months into his professional career.

OLHANENSE RETURN HOME

7th February was a Red Letter Day for SC Olhanense as they returned home to the newly refurbished Estádio José Arcanjo after an absence of three months. Opponents Olimpico do Montijo saw red of another kind, ending the game with just nine men! With seven recent additions to the starting line-up the fans were hoping for a home win which duly came (3-1) thanks to goals from captain Leleco, centre-forward Reider Rodriguez and substitute Hassan. A week later the team travelled to the Azores to play league leaders SC Praiense who had won nine and drawn one of their ten home games. A goal less draw moved Olhanense up to fifth place in the Campeonato Portugal Division D as they chase down a play-off place. Home games this month are against high flying Oriental (Lisbon) on the 17th March and Sporting Ideal (Azores) on the 31st March.

Greenside bunkers Chris Truter, resident professional at Quinta do Vale

H

i and welcome to the Pro Tip with Chris Truter. For this Pro Tip we’re going to look at how to ensure you get out of greenside bunkers first time, every time, with the minimum of fuss. The first thing to remember when you're in a bunker, is that you shouldn't be there in the first place! Having a good course strategy can easily limit the number of times you find yourself in a bunker. So if bunker play is not your strength, make sure you plan the hole accordingly. The second thing to remember is that bunkers are easy. Really, they’re easy. It’s one of the only shots in golf where you actually have a reasonable margin of error. You can hit the sand closer to the ball and it’s out, you can hit further away from the ball or shallower through the sand or steeper into the sand and the ball will still be out. The only important bit is, essentially, to hit the ball fat. And anyone can do that, right? Here is an overview of the simple technique you need to employ to make sure you get out

48

of the bunker every time. When you are hitting from the fairway, the correct impact is to hit the ball first, then the ground, taking a divot. However in a bunker the correct impact is to hit the sand first, sliding the club through the sand and under the ball. So what you need to do is visualise an imaginary ball right behind your real ball, in line with the flagstick. You should take your standard stance and set up to that imaginary ball, so that there will be a space of at least an inch and a half to two inches between your club and the real ball. Now comes the magic bit. All you need to do is make a normal swing. That’s it. Take your normal stance - making sure you work your feet into the sand for balance and lowering your body slightly to help hit under the ball - and make your normal swing and follow through. If you make a decent swing, you will hit the sand first, and the ball will pop out onto the green. Bear in mind here that if the ball does not get out of the bunker, it has nothing to do

with the bunker and everything to do with not having made a good swing! For shorter shots make a three quarter swing or half swing, again just as though you’re swinging from the center of the fairway. If need be, you can also open the face of the club for shorter, higher shots. Just remember to follow the basic rules and make a normal swing to a full finish. Too often we get bogged down in bunkers trying to remember one hundred different swing thoughts; weight on the left, quiet legs, steeper backswing, extra wrist hinge...put all that out of your mind, and do things the simple way. Golf is hard enough, why make it harder by cluttering your brain? Of course, the one thing you do need is confidence, but with this simple technique and a bit of practice, you’ll be getting up and down from the bunker like a pro in no time.
