he planned demolitions for the centre of Culatra, one of the Ria Formosa islands, have been shelved, according to the Minister of Environment Jorge Moreira da Silva. The Coastal Zone Management Plan will now include an exception and the Sociedade Polis Litoral Ria Formosa will instruct its contractors not to procede as the properties at the centre of Culatra are to be legalised, according to the minister. The assurance was given by the Jorge Moreira da Silva at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Regional Planning and Local Government following issues relating to Polis that were raised by Algarve MPs Cristóvão Norte, associations and local Algarve mayors. "The minister announced that 'there is openness to review the legal status of the housing on Culatra, to legalise the existing homes there,'" according to Cristóvão Norte speaking to press after the committee meeting. Culatra has about a thousand residents and is viewed as the centre of fishing and shellfish harvesting for

the Ria Formosa islands. 113 houses are due to be demolished, many of them are first homes, not second as stated in their categorisation. The same demolition exemption has not been extended to the Hangares and Farol areas on Culatra. Here the work of Polis and its contractors will continue as planned. Cristóvão Norte said that there is some primary housing in Hangars, not second homes, and warned of the need to provide for the relocation of families living there, "possibly to the centre of Culatra.” Speaking at the Parliamentary Commission, the Algarve MP said that in the plan for the interventions on the Ria Formosa islands started out as “renaturation," but when Polis started its work, people "quickly began to speak of demolitions." Whether additional housing can be erected on Culatra for those already made homeless by Polis remains to be seen but this is a big step forward for the islanders who have been campaigning with determination to preserve their way of life and basic living arrangements.

T

he British Ambassador to Portugal, Mrs Kirsty Hayes, visited Centre Algarve near Moncarapacho recently and was extremely impressed with the development of the first fully equipped facility for those with special needs. Incredibly there is nowhere in Europe where a family who have a special needs member can holiday together in a complex that is dedicated to their requirements. The charity, 24 x 7 Special Needs Holiday Trust has, over the past four-and-half years, converted a derelict hotel complex with the help of over 470 volunteers. Centre Algarve has been designed for wheelchair access and has hoists for the swimming pool, special bedrooms with fully hygienic wet rooms and power hoists, sensory gardens, sensory and soft play room, safety play area, an education centre, kitchen with an American themed diner, restaurant and its own petting zoo. The Ambassador took the opportunity to present a match ball for the International Walking Football weekend, with Centre Algarve and SC Olhanense youth development programme being the nominated recipients of monies raised. www.centrealgarve.org

The exciting Algarve Bike Challenge (ABC) will be taking place from the 6th to the 8th of March this year. Hosted in the historical city of Tavira, the event starts with a historical display of lights and torches in the town centre on the Friday evening. Teams of two will race in two stages, the first staying on mainly flat lands between the coast and the hills, while the Sunday GPS course sends the teams on a shorter but hillier race. The real challenge of this team race is not just about the winning but overcoming your own limitations and the enjoyment of being surrounded by nature.

PET SPAYING The benefits of spaying your cat or dog early.

he goal of this article is to share scientific information with concerned owners on the risks of spaying and neutering their dogs sooner than needed. The pros and cons of spaying a dog are far too many to elicit them all in an article, therefore I chose the most popular cons since the pros are easily found at your local vet. Please keep in mind that spaying and neutering is still the best way to control the overpopulation of dogs and cats!!! GROWTH AND SEXUAL HORMONES When you spay dogs at a young age, the growth hormones are missing important regulatory input from the sexual hormones and the bones continue to grow longer than they ought to (Salmeri et al, JAVMA 1991;198:1193-1203). MUSCULAR-SKELETAL CONDITIONS AND SPAYING

8

Hip dysplasia: Dogs who are sterilized before the age of six months have a 70% increased risk of developing hip dysplasia (Spain et al, JAVMA 2004); Dogs neutered at six months were nearly twice as likely to develop hip dysplasia when compared to intact dogs (Van Hagen et al, Am J Vet Res, Feb 2005). Cruciate ligament rupture: Spayed and neutered dogs were twice as likely to suffer cranial cruciate ligament rupture. (Whitehair et al, JAVMA Oct 1993: Slauterbeck et al, Clin Orthop Relat Res Dec 2004); Additionally sterilization can cause obesity (Edney et al, Vet Rec 1986 Apr) and this is a contributing factor to an increased risk of cranial cruciate ligament tear. CANCER AND SPAYING Osteosarcoma (cancer of the bone): spayed and neutered dogs are twice as likely to develop this deadly disease (Ru et al, Vet J, Jul

1998); castrated male Rottweilers are four times more likely to develop osteosarcoma than intact dogs (Cooley et al, Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev, Nov 2002) the researchers concluded from their results that the longer the dogs were exposed to sex hormones, the lower their risk of osteosarcoma. Mammary cancer: “A commonlystated advantage of neutering bitches is a significant reduction in the risk of mammary tumours, however the evidence for this has not previously been assessed by systematic review. Due to the limited evidence available and the risk of bias in the published results, the evidence that neutering reduces the risk of mammary neoplasia, and the evidence that age at neutering has an effect, are judged to be weak and are not a sound basis for firm recommendations. (Beauvais et al, Journal of Small Animal Practice

oga promotes concentration, insight and serenity to reduce and cancel the stress of everyday life. It also increases the effectiveness of the mind by providing capacity for quick and inspired decisions. Other benefits include better memory, concentration and awareness, more efficient learning, less anxiety, decreased hostility, and depression. 2012 53, 314–322). In my experience I have seen much fewer mammary tumours in spayed bitches than non spayed ones and no prostate cancer or testicular cancer in castrated dogs, therefore although there might not be scientific evidence I can assure that most vets have had the same experience; spayed dogs have fewer reproductive organ ailments in general! AGEING AND SPAYING Incontinence: Early spaying or neutering is commonly associated with urinary incontinence in female dogs and has been linked to increased incidence of urethral sphincter incontinence in males. Cognitive impairment: the presence of circulating sexual hormones in ageing sexually intact dogs may slow the progression of cognitive impairment. WHAT ABOUT CATS? Luckily, thus far, research has shown that our feline companions don't have the same negative longterm physiologic consequences associated with de-sexing that plague our canine population. We may identify potential links in the future, but thus far, it appears our canine companions are more negatively affected by spaying or neutering.

NEW EYES I

For all of you out there like me who became the living advert for “should have gone to Spec Savers”, you may relate to this.

t creeps up on us very slowly and we don’t wake up one day and can’t see, but the truth is our eyes are deteriorating and unfortunately for the majority, it’s normal and a fact of life. It makes you feel like a dinosaur and denial of this fact prevails! Many people are in exactly the same situation but we don't notice. Everyone looks exactly the same, their eyes surely must be fine! If you break an arm or leg, it’s obvious that you’re a bit of an invalid, and people accommodate and help you, but when you can’t see very well, you feel like one, pretend to yourself you’re not, and more importantly nobody sees the need to help you! Truth is, when it’s a struggle to see, you don’t really want help and you’re not ready for the long white stick. It would be nice to just see, but it is necessary to wear your glasses more and more. Do I really need to take them with me? Actually yes you do, is the answer. Apart from the obvious examples.... a night out with friends at the favourite restaurant, the menus become a challenge to read. “Oh God” kicks in when you realise you've done this before and you “should have brought

Sometimes are the local “talk to anyone” raving you can get by, other times it’s really lunatic. You were convinced you difficult and then.... there is “no way” spoke to them the other day?? More you are able to see smaller things. friends! Even within a short time, what was The classic is the big welcome as you once big enough to read has become go up to a friend to give them the usual “ridiculously small”. “hello” kiss and just as you get there The "should have gone to Spec you realise it’s not them. It’s far too Savers" moments on the TV are very late, the kiss is almost on the cheek funny. "Do people really do those ... you have to apologise or blag it and things?" is what we think when we just hope they can see as little as you haven’t quite reached that The can of Pledge cleaner used stage, and slowly but surely you could give the advertisers to clean the mirror in the bathroom ideas as you have random that didn’t get put away has now “can’t see” moments. become the new hairspray, nice! There must be other people like me who have been in conversation and they’ve done the same? around the dinner table reached for the You’re 'Mrs Doubtfire' on a regular peanuts only to realise this is the ash basis? If you could see the signs for tray? the toilet that would be something, but Everyone has waved at someone the ladies and men’s on toilet doors passing on the street, in the car or on the look just the same anyway! Madly, once your glasses are off your face, it’s a job to find them! A particular stage when you know it’s bad is when you can’t read prices at the supermarket or labels in shops and you know you have “absolutely” no chance with the PDQ machine when it comes to paying. Mobile phones, reading and sending a message....B’Jesus! Basically you become reliant on your glasses and if you forget them you rely on who you are with. Watching the TV, football games, car racing, or any score board or a credit on a film becomes hard work and you end up feeling like you’re not getting involved. You can’t keep asking questions you’ll get on everyone’s nerves. Having never had particularly good eyes, as a child I wore national health glasses as these were the only option. At school I was bullied as it wasn’t cool or fashionable; no designer brands at all. Thankfully I didn’t have to wear them through my teens and early adulthood, my eyes had improved and they were happier days. It is incredible how many people have difficulty seeing; more than we realise.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Recently I was out with an old friend and the waiter overheard my friend say “Ah no way, I forgot my glasses” I had no idea she needed any. As the waiter was getting our drinks order and seeing to other tables, he quietly placed a lovely red box on the table. Inside, lived an assortment of different coloured, shaped and strength glasses that previous customers had forgotten to take home. They managed to remember to bring them but forgot to take them home. That’s very handy for those of us who had forgotten to bring them out in the first place. Frustration sets in at times, filled with lots of very funny moments. 'Contact lenses! Maybe that’s the answer', I thought to myself? Lots of people are very happy with them. I’ll avoid the constant remembering and losing. I tried these and it was fabulous once they were in, you don’t have to worry about glasses and you can see! Problem is they have to come out and then you need your glasses again. Some days when they’ve been left in overnight, usually after a heavy night out on the town, it’s great to wake up and see straight away, but the down side is they can get infected and that’s

exactly what happened. They dry out, and it’s very tempting to leave them in longer than you should. I’ll have to persevere with glasses. The debit and credit card numbers are ridiculously difficult to read with the best of eyes, with ones that are going downhill it is just hard work. Girls doing your make - up!!! Well? My eyes were deteriorating fast, for both close things as well as far, like driving. I found myself passing signs on the road and “fudge”! The missed turn off. Instead “we’re just taking the scenic route which is more fun.” Even when I did wear my glasses, things didn’t improve greatly. I had had an eye test fairly recently, but I decided to have another with an optometrist. The outcome... my prescription had changed a lot and I would either need two pairs of glasses one for reading and and one for distance, or varifocal glasses forever. OH MAN! Next month I’ll share with you the complete life changing experience that has left me not needing glasses or contact lenses ever again and I now have perfect vision. No need to get on any planes, it was all done right here in the East Algarve.

Beauty

BEFORE

Once again we welcome George Allen from the Hair Studio in Conceção Cabanas and this month’s hair model, Deidre.

Makeover of the month

O

riginally from Glasgow and having lived in the East Algarve for 3 years, George’s eager model Deirdre Mc Bain was this year’s first make over. Deirdre explained that her hair had become thin and difficult to style, over time, and so very difficult to manage, so she decided to take a full consultation with George, on both style and colours. George explained that, “Deirdre’s hair was 100 per cent white and one block colour, to give it body and texture a mid-beige blonde was

used as the base colour.” Commonly with home colouring kits the base colour can become quite block like and lack any depth. When choosing the base colour he was careful to bear in mind Deirdre’s fair complexion. “Deirdre does not always wear much foundation and it’s key not to make the colour too dark.” To add texture and warm tones George also added very fine ash blonde highlights to achieve that sun kissed look. The initial base colour was on for just 25 minutes with the slices taking another 15 minutes. With a complete re-style, George

created textured layers throughout to add perfect style and balance. “It is now very easy for Deirdre to blow dry her hair herself, it will take minutes and she can re create the style easily.” The whole process took just an hour and would normally cost around €40. It was clear Deirdre was overwhelmed by the transformation. She has a younger, more manageable style with very natural warm colours. It was a pleasure to see Deirdre clearly buzzing with a fabulous makeover. Many thanks to Deirdre and George.

eing new to the bird watching scene, and not the obsessive sort, I attempted to join my casual hobbies and pastimes with a rewarding new project. on photography, I started taking pictures, initially with a small digital camera. Luck and patience worked and some images were, I thought, quite acceptable. Enthused, I upgraded the camera and lens, and found out quite soon that of course you do get what you pay for, but more than adequate equipment can be reasonably purchased. One of the pleasures on the walks has been watching the flamingos on the saltinas. Timid but beautiful birds, and very photogenic! Soon I was building up a library of pictures for my own enjoyment and it quickly became apparent that careful filing was important, with sub categories (e.g. for flamingos: standing, swimming, flying).

WATCHING Now using the smaller and better camera, I was quickly finding out the difficulties of light, movement, depth of field and range, not to mention the total lack of sympathy of the subject when attempting to "capture" them! Challenges to be met! Spending some time on the salt flats also gave many opportunities to expand the selection to the many other birds, both migratory and resident. It was now essential to get hold of good reference material and I turned to: •Algarve Wildlife, Ray Tipper ISBN 9780956054418 Includes diary, flowers and fungii. •Algarve Birds Dr Manfred Temme ISBN

www.eastalgarvemag.com

9789729759031 •Collins Pocket Guide, Birds of Britain and Europe. ISBN 0002198940 •Finding Birds in South Portugal, Dave Gosney ISBN 9781907316401 Now expanding my interest, the images of Storks, Spoonbills, Gulls, Waders, and almost anything that moved (which created an identity crisis), built up in the files. Time to try to be a little more selective, and my interest was moving towards behavioral images, showing birds "working", (hunting, fishing, displaying etc.). I have read that many rarities have been discovered in recent years, including Reef Egret, Lesser Flamingo, Marbled Duck, Long-

tailed Duck, White-headed Duck, Red-knobbed Coot, Marsh Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Wilson’s Phalarope, Pectoral Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs, Royal Tern, Forster’s Tern and Whitewinged Tern. Here my shortcomings on obsession kick in, and I find little interest in collecting species, and just takes what comes! For the beginners there are excellent tour guides in the Algarve and Tavira in particular has some of the most qualified and experienced guides to be found anywhere. They are reasonably priced and are a wonderful help to both beginners and experienced people. The help and encouragement that I have had from

experts Ray Tipper (email: booking@birds.pt) and Peter Dedicoat (www.algarvebirders.com) has been superb. So, what to do with the ever growing library of images on the computer? Please do not think that there is an easy sell, on-line or elsewhere; get lucky and maybe you may be able to sell unique pictures, but generally I find that just sharing my interest is rewarding enough. Share the images, spread the interest and the understanding of the wonders that are around us leads to better protection of the whole general ecology. Getting the best out of pictures is most important, and again I have been fortunate in the help, advice

WHERE TO GO? There are obvious sites where good viewing is almost guaranteed, for example the bird hide in Quinta do Lago, which has the added advantage that the birds are less timid due to the numbers of visitors. Working from the west, recommended sites are Cape St Vincent, Arade Estuary, Quinta da Rocha, Lagoa dos Salgados, Quinta do Lago, Ria Formosa, Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, but the many salt pans, golf course lakes beaches, cliffs, and general countryside all provide wonderful opportunities. Different birds like different environments, you just have to get out and enjoy over 250 species!

and encouragement I have received from Pete and Gill at Art and Image Studio Tavira, producing top class professional images for everybody, a selection of which will be displayed in the Studio (near the Pousada) in Tavira from the 14th of March for one month, together with expert contributors, and we are still seeking further contributions, so if you think you have that special image please let me know, email johnson889@gmail.com. I have derived enormous pleasure from watching the bird life around me in the Algarve, New experiences, new friends, and above all relaxation when out and about. I know that its not for everyone, but you should try it!

Giclée Portugal is based in the beautiful ancient coastal town of Tavira at Art & Image Studio, just a stone’s throw from the main centre and Castle walls.

rinter Pete ran his own photographic laboratory in London for 25 years producing prints with the care and skill for his acclaimed client base. Pete printed all Linda McCartney’s photographic work for her exhibitions, calendars and books for the last ten years of her life,, including, “Road Works” and “Linda McCartney's Sixties: Portrait of an Era.” the highest selling photographic book of all time. Linda was a top photographer whose pictures of rock stars in the 1960s led to her meeting her future husband, Paul McCartney. Wherever a rock event was happening, Linda McCartney was there shooting, as this electrifying collection of never-before-published photographs testifies. Featuring more than 250 photographs, 32 in

full colour, they include Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, the Beatles, Steve Winwood, the Grateful Dead, to name but a few. The word Giclée (pronouned Gee Clay) was created by Jack Duganne, a print maker working at Nash Editions, the world’s first professional fine-art digital printmaking company. He wanted a name for the new type of prints they were producing on the IRIS printer, (a large-format, highresolution industrial pre-press, proofing inkjet printer) that they had adapted for the new fine-art printing. He was specifically looking for a word that would not have the negative connotations of "ink jet" or "computer generated", so he came up with the word Giclée. Based on the French word Gicleur, which means "nozzle" ,the verb form gicler means "to squirt, spurt, or spray". An unintended consequence of

Duganne's choice of name was its problematic use in the French language since it is also modern French slang for male ejaculation!. The Giclee method combines pigment based inks with high quality archival quality paper to achieve prints which are of superior archival quality, light fast and have great stability. Their Giclée prints are created using an Epson 7880/9880 with Epson Ultrachrome K3 inks which, with the 8 channel print head, are capable of producing an extremely wide tonal range and colour gamut (a whole range of digital colour). The Giclée printing process involves squirting or spraying microscopic dots of pigment-based ink onto high quality art paper or canvas. The image is colour corrected to attain the closest possible match to the original work if required. The digital

information is fine tuned to the type of paper or surface on which the image is to be printed, further ensuring fidelity to the original. Giclée prints are printed on a variety of substrates or mediums, the most common being cotton rag, canvas or Baryta paper. At Giclée Portugal they only use genuine artist papers. Cotton rag or ‘watercolour’ Giclée paper has been popular for many years of Giclée printing. These fibrous papers transform a photograph into a painterly, soft image that adds a classy, decorative feel making it perfect for everything from portfolios to art prints for exhibitions. Baryta paper, also described as ‘fibre based’, has been popular as a traditional paper for black and white printing for many decades. Books from movies were another of Pete’s specialities and with his flair for precision and detail this meant photographic stills from the films shot by none other than Jack English were expertly reproduced. Jack was initially involved in setting up a PX clothes shop in Covent Garden with Roger Burton. He and Burton then left to form Contemporary Wardrobe, leading to a commission to supply the costumes for the film Quadrophenia and independent styling work for MPL (Paul McCartney),

Italian Vogue and Boulevard. Some of Pete’s remarkable work includes Nil by Mouth (Gary Oldman and Luc Besson), The Fifth Element (Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Jovovich and Luc Besson), Lost in Space (Gary Oldman and Matt Le Blanc) Legionnaire (Jean Claude Van Damme) and Wild (Stephen Fry). Other illustrious clients included Anthony Crickmay (dance & royalty) Eve Arnold (Magnum Photos), Phil Stern, Terence Donovan, David Bailey, Eamon J McCabe (Fashion) Eamon McCabe (Observer, The Guardian), Tony Mcgee, HRH Duchess of York, John Mason, Tim Evan Cook, Brian Griffin, as mentioned, Jack English, Eric Clapton, Gary Oldman, and war photographer Sebastian Rich. The National Geographical Society in London trusted Pete with photographer Herbert Pointing´s original - and priceless - photographic glass plates taken during Robert Falcon Scott´s first Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic between 1901-1904. Pete has had his prints exhibited at the V&A (Victoria and Albert), Hamiltons, the National Portrait Gallery (London), The Royal Photographic Society (Bath) and the Museum of Photographic Art.

WHAT CAN THEY DO FOR YOU? They can produce prints for professional photographers, artists and interior designers as well as amateurs. The large format, museum-quality, archival prints can be made up to 112cm wide and they offer a worldwide shipping service. Old pictures and slides can be transformed and brought back to life with fabulous quality. Their base materials are imported from America and come with a Blue Wool rating 6. This gives their prints a guaranteed 75 year life for colour and 100 years for black and white. From light boxes, window displays, canvas etc they can cater for all your needs. Also their digital prints offer a simpler alternative to Giclee Fine Art Prints, your digital prints or photographs can be transferred to art paper or canvas. A wonderful array of fine and unique art works and prints at affordable prices and a fantastic way to bring those special old photographs or slides back. It was a great pleasure to meet everyone from the gallery a very friendly and informative visit will await you. rom the decision to invest in Real Estate, to actually buying your first rental property, there is quite a lot of work to be done. This task can be daunting for a first time investor, especially when investing in a property abroad. One of the most crucial points when looking for a 'buy to let' property in the Tavira area is the location. To keep your initial investment low and get a first step onto the Algarvian property ladder, the smaller coastal villages on the east and west side of Tavira such as “Cabanas de Tavira” or “Santa Luzia” can offer interesting investment opportunities. For instance, in the current market you can easily find a two bedroom property with access to a communal swimming pool for around €110.000 to €115.000. In addition to the current low property prices, for British buyers today’s exchange rate of 1.36 is making your decision even easier and would equal an investment of approx. 85,000 GBP. (www.landandhousesalgarve.com // property ref. LHA-1016 with an asking price of €115.000 is such an example of an affordable first step onto the property ladder) Having said this, buying into a lower end property comes at a price. You will be faced with far more competition from similar properties for the same renters. Especially in Cabanas there is a fairly large offer of apartments available for rent. In addition, both Cabanas and Santa Luzia are highly seasonal holiday destinations. During the winter time a number of restaurants, bars and cafés do close, which makes it more difficult to attract winter

www.eastalgarvemag.com

lets. Nevertheless the proximity of Cabanas to 18-hole golf course Benamor makes this village a very attractive location for golfers who often rent the property for various weeks or month from October to May, which is the best season for playing golf. Your success to find tenants will to a large extend depend on your marketing strategy. On the contrary in Tavira centre, the same type of two bedroom apartment with access to a communal swimming pool will cost you in the current market around €150.000 to €180.000 depending on the location of the residential area. Very popular due to their location South of the national road EN125 are the developments of “Quinta do Caracol” and “Horta Poço do Bispo” in Tavira. To put it into a nutshell, buying a property in Tavira and in walking distance to the center has and always will make it easier for you to find tenants for your property all year around. If you decide against buying a

property with a communal pool to keep for instance your annual condominium fees low, you should definitely look for a property with a sunny outside space. Whether for a short term holiday let or a long stay, most renters come down to the South of Portugal to escape from the weather in Northern Europe. A sun filled spot like a patio, terrace or balcony will definitely attract more tenants. RE-OPENING NIGHT Sunday 15th March at 8:30 pm Entertainment with

Based on the marriage of King Charles II to the Portuguese Princess, Catherine of Braganza, ‘The Rhyming Diary of Mrs Pepys’ is a bawdy restoration comedy.

F

ollowing successful sellout shows of ‘Rags to Riches’ the new play is written entirely in rhyme and features a cast of nine actors. Like her more famous husband - the diarist Samuel Pepys - Mrs Pepys recounts the sexual scandals and religious intrigues of the Royal Court in 17th century London. Based upon factual incidents, as the scenes unfold details of Catherine’s extravagant dowry and Charles’s lascivious appetite and seductive mistresses are revealed. The play is directed at a fastmoving pace by Thomas Hartmann who has professional theatre, film and television experience in the Netherlands. Maximizing every comic moment, it has been written

by author and Algarve resident, Carolyn Kain. Grafting... Not just hard work but the term used to describe joining plants together thus creating a new variety.

GRAFTING G

rafting describes any of a number of techniques in which a section of a stem with leaf buds is inserted into the stock of a tree. The upper part of the graft (the scion) becomes the top of the plant, the lower portion (the understock) becomes the root system or part of the trunk. Although grafting usually refers to joining not only two plants, it may be a combination of several. A third plant added between two others becomes the trunk or a portion of it. This is called an interstem.

32

Why Graft? Some cultivars (varieties) of plants do not come true from seeds. The seed from a Golden Delicious apple will produce an apple tree, but it will not produce a Golden Delicious apple tree. In other words, fruit trees cannot be reproduced "true" to the original cultivar from seed. They can only be reproduced by grafting. Grafting (top working), is a way to change a large tree from old to a new variety. It is also a method of using a root system better adapted to soil or climate than that produced naturally by an ungrafted plant. By using special understocks

or interstems, grafting is a way to produce dwarf plants. What can be Grafted? Most varieties of a particular fruit species are interchangeable and can be grafted. Because of differences in vigor, some are better able to support others as understocks. Plants of the same genus and species can usually be grafted even though they are a different variety. Plants with the same genus but of a different species may often be grafted. But the result may be weak, short-lived, or they may not unite at all. Plants of different genera are

less successfully grafted although there are some cases where this is possible. Plants of different families cannot be grafted successfully. What Trees Can Be Grafted? Young, vigorous fruit trees up to 5 years old are best for top working. Older apple and pear trees of almost any age can be top worked but the operation is more severe and those over 10 years old must be worked at a higher point. Young trees should have 1 to 2 feet of branch between the trunk and the graft. Otherwise the good crotch formation of the understock will be lost by the trunk expanding past the union. Trees up to 5 years old can be grafted at one time. On older trees about half--the upper and center part only--should be worked at one time. The remainder should be worked a year later. How to Collect and Store Scions Scion wood may be collected during the winter. It should have a diameter of 6mm to 10mm. If the scions are left on the tree until spring, there is some danger that the buds will start to grow or be injured during winter. Store in a cold, moist place at temperatures close to 34 degrees F. At home, a few scions could be stored in a plastic bag in the

34

refrigerator with moist paper towels. Do not store in a freezer. When to Graft It is best to graft in the spring, from the time the buds of understock trees are beginning to open, until blossom time. The usual time is April or early May. What is budding? Budding is a method of grafting in which the scion (upper portion of the graft) is a single bud rather than a piece of stem or twig. It is the most commonly used method for fruit tree production in the nursery, but can also be used for top working plum, cherry, apricots, and peach as well as young apple and pear trees. (Cherry, plum, and apricot are not easily cleft grafted or whip grafted.) Why propagate by budding? Budding, particularly "T" budding, is faster than any other grafting technique. Even for the beginner, the percentage of successful unions is usually greater than with other forms of grafting. Budding is also well adapted to plant shoots from 6mm to 25mm in diameter. In larger branches, buds may be inserted in vigorously growing twigs near the upper part of the plant. Besides ease and success, a stronger union is formed than those made with other grafting techniques.

Because only a single bud is inserted, you can produce a number of new plants even when scion wood of a new variety is scarce. When is the time to bud? "T" budding can be done almost any time that the bark of the stock slips (easily separates from the wood) and buds are fully developed. Most budding is done from July 15 to August 15. Buds set at this time normally remain dormant until the following spring. In cold climates, bud growth in fall is undesirable because young shoots are subject to winter injury. Spring budding (in May) is possible, but is less desirable than fall budding. What Tools and Materials are Needed? Knife. A good quality knife, able to hold a sharp edge, is the key to good grafting. Although special grafting and budding knives are desirable, you can use almost any good pocket knife. Keep material to sharpen the knife handy. Grafting tape. This is a special tape with a cloth backing that decomposes before girdling can occur. Tapes may be used for binding grafts where there is not enough natural pressure. Rubber Electrician's tape is an excellent

material that will bind and protect graft unions. Plastic electrical and masking tapes are also used. Plastic tape can be a problem because it lasts to long and may constrict the growth of the graft. If used, choose a brand that is elastic and will stick well to itself. Do not stretch this tape too tightly or it may crack or weather. Masking tape is suitable where little pressure is required, as in the whip graft. Asphalt water emulsion. Is widely used as a protective coating on graft unions. It is of pasty consistency and can be applied with a brush. It is preferable, however, to smear it on thicker with a small paddle. Budding strips. Budding strips are elastic bands. They look like a wide rubber band that has been cut open. Grafting tool. Specially designed tools have been developed for grafting. The most common one is used for cleft grafting. It has a blade used to split

the stub and a wedge to hold the split open while the scions are inserted If this tool is unavailable, use a heavy knife and a fairly wide wedge at least 2 inches long for cleft grafting. Use a mallet or hammer to pound the grafting tool or heavy knife into the stub. Split the stub and insert the

wedge to open the split. Reasons for Graft Failure 1 Stock and scion were not compatible. 2 The cambiums were not meeting properly. 3 Scions were upside down. 4 Grafting was done at the wrong time. 5 Understock or scion were not healthy. 6 Scions were dried out or injured by cold. 7 Scions were not dormant. 8 The graft was not properly covered. 9 The scion was displaced by storm, birds, or other means. 10 The graft was shaded too much by other growth. 11 The graft was attacked by insects or disease. 12 The graft union was girdled because tape was not cut or released in time In next months issue we will be looking more closely at these methods and giving detailed instructions for you to carry out your own grafts.

10 questions about the IMI

T

he first installments of the IMI are starting to arrive in the post boxes this march. For many taxpayers, 2015 will be a year where many owners will have to pay more IMI tax. The reason: the end of the safeguard clause, which was used over the last two years, to soften the disproportionate rise in IMI, after the revaluation of properties that took place between 2011 and 2012. However, despite this bad news, there will be more households exempt from paying this tax. This is because the maximum gross household income for the purposes of the exemption, will rise and from 2015 will cover families with annual incomes up to 15,295 euros per year, provided that the book value of the property does not exceed 66,500 euros. It’s estimated that the number of families eligible for the full exemption from payment of IMI is extended to more than 50 thousand families, passing in 2015 the 350,000 households. What is the IMI? IMI (Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis - Municipal Property Tax) is a tax on the taxable value of immovable property in Portugal. This tax came into force in 2003, replacing

1

the Council Tax, and reverts to the respective municipalities. Who pays IMI? The taxpayer is the property owner as of 31st December of the previous year. This means that if you bought your property at the end of 2014, you will pay the IMI for the full year. Likewise, if you sold your property at the beginning of 2015, you will still need to pay the IMI this year, as it’s always related to the previous year. How to calculate the IMI? IMI is calculated based on the Tax Asset Value (VPT) attributed to the property to which is applied a rate set annually by the municipality (VPT x IMI rate). The way the VPT is calculated varies. The VPT is calculated on the basis of various factors such as the construction value per square meter gross floor area, location, quality, comfort and property age, updated every three years. What is the taxable value? The taxable value of buildings is its value determined by assessment according to the rules of the IMI Code. This value is registered in the land register. Who determines the IMI rates? The municipalities decide each

year, which tax to apply in their council. This needs to be between 0.3 and 0.5% for buildings and 0.8% for plots (rustic property). Properties with tax domicile in "offshore" are taxed at 7.5%, regardless of the type of property. How long is the payment of IMI? IMI is paid annually through a single billing document in April, if the tax is up to 250 euros. If the value is between 250 and 500 euros, you can pay in two installments, in April and November. If the amount exceeds 500 euros, you can pay in three times (April, July and November). What are the consequences of not paying the IMI on time? If you do not pay within the period specified in the collection document, you will pay interest on arrears. If the non-payment persists your property can be seized. Where can the IMI be paid? IMI can be paid at the Tax Office, Post Office, in any ATM machine or through internet banking. 9. Who is entitled to exemption? Are exempt from property tax, the owners whose annual income on IRS in the previous year does not exceed 15,295 euros, provided that the book value of the property

Football first for Olhão

T

All the latest sports news from Chris Wright.

he much heralded, first ever, international Walking Football event, for those over fifty years of age, proved to be a resounding success. Sponsorship from Blevins Franks helped to fully immerse the senior citizens in an action packed weekend as they made history in the annals of Walking Football. Sports therapist Mick Quinn and his Cove Rapidly Ageing Pensioners from Farnborough, Hampshire breezed into Faro Airport, resplendent in their red and black tracksuits and were soon discussing tactics as they enjoyed the town’s hospitality in several local bars! Next morning the accompanying film crew, from the English Football Association, were on hand to record the momentous occasion when the Soccer Olhanense Strollers and their guests emerged, via the team tunnel, onto the pitch at the José Arcanjo Stadium. The competition for the John Mortimore Trophy, featuring players from England, Ireland, Norway, Scotland and Germany, was watched by an appreciative crowd. The sport only started in Olhão last September and the more experienced visitors from the UK were in fine form as they won all four games. Man-of-theTournament, however, was SOS keeper Wolfgang Eudenbach who made a string of fine saves. Ninetysix players, officials and guests attended the Presentation Dinner at the the Olá Peixe Restaurant where Guests-of-Honour were

42

Clive Jewell (British Vice-consul), Gavin Scott (Blevins Franks) and Luis Teixeira (SC Olhanense). Mick Quinn, on behalf of the visitors, presented organiser Chris Wright with a magnificent engraved glass souvenir to mark this historic occasion. Clive Jewell presented the trophies to the two squads before saying how honoured he was to have been allowed to make a cameo appearance for the Soccer Olhanense Strollers. The British Vice-consul said, “I have been totally sold on this new activity and I foresee a great future for Walking Football as the over 50s become aware of how the sport can become an integral part of improving their wellbeing.” Commemorative mugs and t-shirts were presented to main guests and sponsors. On the Sunday morning a new challenge awaited the players as they descended on the Colina Verde Sports & Golf Resort at Maragota near Moncarapacho for the FootGolf Challenge. The strong wind made for a difficult competition but there were some very creditable scores. The Cove Rapidly Ageing Pensioners returned to the UK determined to return in the not too distant future. Clive Jewell summed up the mood of everyone involved with the event when he said, “There is no doubt in my mind that this is the start of a much greater involvement by an ageing population who love their football. I would urge anyone over fifty who has an interest in

the beautiful game to give it a try. Come and join me and you may well find it could change your life.” As the magazine went to print a new group for Walking Football 50+ had its inaugural session at Browns Sports & Leisure Club in Vilamoura whilst a new group could soon be operating in Albufeira.

All change as Olhanense go into freefall

ne ray of sunshine in a bleak month was when the players received their wage arrears but as the transfer window closed there were ‘comings-andgoings’ aplenty. Jorge Paixão’s four month tenure as manager came to an end and the reins handed to the unknown Cristiano Bacci. The 39 year-old Italian has coached in his country’s lower league and is joined by Paolo Piccareta who worked with Paolo di Canio at Swindon Town and Sunderland. The move adds strength to the rumours that the Olhão based club will be linked with Italian Serie A side Sampadoria. Igor Campedelli, who

until recently was the main face of the Olhanense SAD, is negotiating the sale of a 35% stake in the club to investors close to Sampdoria. Two young players from the Genoa club, Martin Simões and Andres Ponce, have already joined Olhanense. Portuguese clubs are permitted to sign non-EU nationals from South America and Africa (contrary to what happens in several other European countries) and with lower taxation, the mild climate and a Segunda Liga ripe to develop young talent, the Algarve is an attractive proposition. Sampdoria is keen to follow the route taken by Udinese, which controls, albeit indirectly,

Martin Lockwood and Aileen Kennedy in action

ootGolf is now firmly established at the Colina Verde Golf and Sports Resort at Maragota. It is a precision sport where players kick a football into a cup in as few shots as possible. The game is played the same way as golf, except players use a football instead of a golf ball, and the ball is kicked rather than struck with a club, working towards a 21-inch "cup" in place of the usual golf hole. The first shot has to be played from the tee box, and to reach the hole, bunkers, trees, water and hills have to be crossed or avoided. This means a powerful shot is useful, but not decisive. Reading the course, a smart approach and accurate putting are even more important. February’s event saw Ella Bryan win the Ladies award with a round of fifty-seven including a birdie on the par four second hole. Top team overall was Kirsten Lovoll, John Bishop and Chris Wright with a combined score of 155. Jeff Denman received the award for the ‘Hole of the Day’ with a two shot birdie on the seventh green. The next FootGolf Challenge takes place on Wednesday 11th March.

Spanish side Granada and English Championship side Watford. A win less month, involving two lengthy journeys to Madeira, left Olhanense third from bottom and in serious danger of relegation. Single goal defeats away at Sporting Lisbon ‘B’, Maritimo ‘B’ and União da Madeira together with three 0-0 home draws is fuelling fears that the club, who last season were in the Primeira Liga, could be heading for meltdown. March will be a defining month with six games including local derbies away to Farense (7th March) and Portimonense (21st/22nd March).

Distance on the greens. This months tip from resident professional at Monte Rei Golf and Country Club James Beesley.

G

olfers of all abilities under-read putts with between eighty to ninety percent missing below the hole. Speed influences how much and when the ball will break. A ball hit too softly will break earlier than a ball struck hole high – “100% of putts left short don't go in”. Centre of contact is important not only in your long game to maximise your distance but also in controlling your distance on the greens and to achieve a consistent stroke each time. When practising a good drill is ´The Gate Drill´ used by Tiger Woods and Ricky Fowler. This will help you achieve a consistent putter head path and centre of contact increasing your percentage of putts made. On a flat area of the green prepare 2 tees slightly wider than the width of your putter as shown in the picture. This drill can be made more difficult by adding additional gates using more tees once success is regular.
