There have been a number of cases recently where cars have been confiscated because the foreign driver of a Portuguese registered car was driving on a non-Portuguese driving licence and did not have a ‘Permission to drive PO4e'.the following information has been issued by aFPOP. the traffic police now have sophisticated computer terminals through which, in most cases, they can check how long you have been in the country. there is no longer any requirement to exchange eu issued driving licences. there is however a requirement to register with the authorities within 30 days of becoming resident in Portugal and the 30 day period begins after you have been in Portugal for 90 days, or the day you become resident whichever is first. after living in this country for 90 days you are then deemed to become resident and should inform imtt and comply with the registration requirements. the procedure to register yourself as a driver in Portugal is simple and requires you to send a form, which can be obtained from a driving school or town shop, to imtt by post.

Words KainCarolyn S et amongst fields of wild flowers and blossoming trees, the gallery’s delightful ‘quinta’ now includes landscapes created by the commended Scottish artist, Ian Scott-Elliot and figure paintings by talented Welshman, Steven Jones. A graduate from Glasgow College of Art, Scott-Elliot has received prestigious awards, also being selected by International Artist magazine as a finalist in the category, ‘Global Landscapes.’ Inspired by scenes of southern Europe, so different from his native shore, his expressionist vistas capture the region’s natural warmth, its scenery and architecture. Exhibited in six European countries, Canada and the USA, this is the first time his work has been seen in Portugal. Painting in a more realistic style Steven Jones is one of Britain’s most celebrated oil painters based on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales. He frequently portrays nostalgic scenes of children beside the shimmering sea, fishing in rock pools, enjoying the waves and sand. Graduating with Distinction in Graphic Design and Illustration, during his early career he was assigned to complete a painting of Diana, Princess of Wales. More recently, his impressive reputation has been established through paintings sold in Fine Art Auctions at Bonham’s, Christie’s and Sotheby’s. His work is currently being exhibited in St Tropez, France as well as at Galeria Corte-Real. The gallery is the sole representative in Portugal of both artists. He has worked as a Technical Consultant, teaching all over the UK, before going on to open a successful salon in the UK. During this time George met his gorgeous wife Helen, who was a model at one of Georges road shows. In 1996 they opened their own salon. George was the stylist, whilst Helen specialised in Holistic therapy, which she continues to do here in the East Algarve. In 2007 they enjoyed a holiday in Cabanas, and having spent ten years running their own successful business in the UK, decided they would like to take the big step and both live and work here in the East Algarve. W e are delighted to introduce to you Bart and Simone, whom we met on a glorious day in the beautiful setting of Vila Monte Hotel and Spa. Bart and Simone run The East Algarve Golf Academy which operates from both Vila Monte and Colina Verde. They met 17 years ago in their native Holland, where Bart was a professional Golfer and Simone was working in the restaurant at which he was based. Simone, at the time knew nothing about golf, whilst Bart was the resident Professional. To enable Bart to use his talents fully, they moved from Holland to Portugal in October 2009, in search of a better climate. Initially they settled in Alvor, where Bart worked at The Penina Resort, in the Western Algarve. Within six months the recession began to bite. The client base dwindled as fewer and fewer people were holidaying. Added to this, the very bad winter of that year forced them to, very reluctantly return to Holland. They were almost packed and mentally ready to leave, when during a complete chance meeting, a couple who ran a golf school at Vila Monte Spa Hotel asked if Bart could help with lessons. This chance meeting was to change their lives.
After working there for just a few days they were offered the chance to buy the business, as the owners, also from Holland, were to return there. Bart and Simone saw this as an "amazing opportunity" and now a year on, feel overwhelmingly at home in the East Algarve, and are "in love" with the whole area.
Eastalgarve_Issue29.indd 14 03/05/2011 23:12
Having a grandfather who was a Head Master, Bart's true talent, and what he enjoys the most is teaching. Bart says that his love is teaching, and Golf is what he's good at. He has 25 years experiance as a Golf professional, and now Simone, as well as running the PR side of the East Algarve Golf Academy, manages the busy diary. Bart also travels on the European Tour, specialising in putting, for the "YES" brand, and has helped the likes of Darren Clarke, Joost Luiten and Eduardo Molinari.
Bart and Simone
"YES" make custom made putters for tour professionals, and last year Bart, was responsible for making a putter for Joost Luiten, just two days before the start of the Portugal Masters, where Joost came 2nd.

H istorically, homes have been a safer investment than equities but if you need to sell a property in the current market it does not give much comfort. Property prices have been falling for 4 years now and Portugal’s financial woes will not help either for the market to recover soon. The result is that we are seeing owners the most affordable real estate of the decade finding it hard to attract buyers. But then again, that’s what bear markets are made of. When Channel Four's ‘A Place in the Sun’ in 2006 nominated the Eastern Algarve out of 20 nominees, as the best place to buy a property, it led to increasing numbers of prospective buyers to the area. It was also a time when investors bought properties off plan at the then popular property tradeshows, many of whom had not visited the area before and had little knowledge of prices. There were also many developments marketed at high prices that were justifiable due to the high specifications. You can buy them now at lower prices and have ample choice. In general, buyers are wary of committing themselves to purchasing a property in the current climate. A bear market is basically a bull market in reverse. Going from one extreme to another has a lot to do with psychology. It is natural to feel more confident when prices are going up, so when prices are going down people are holding back. The media plays a big part in this too and acts like an amplifier on the way up/down. However, the best investments are made in an anticyclical manner (when everyone sells you buy, when every one buys you sell). It is not about trying to call the bottom of this market but to be ESTATE LIVE, INVEST AND ESCAPE PROPERTIES APARTMENTS TOWNHOUSES LHV-927PLOTS

Page 19 able to rationalize a purchase based on good fundamental investment reasons and to dare to go against the Theregrain.are various ways to calculate the value of a property and make a well-informed decision to invest or not. One way is to calculate the replacement value, e.g. buying the land and building the same house. It may sound a bit odd, but building a similar property now as one that was built one year ago would cost more money due to the price increases of commodities, higher VAT and higher financing costs. Another method would be to compare past rental returns versus current yields. Even without going into detail, it is clear that rental yields have improved significantly as property prices have fallen and rents held up. In addition, at the bottom end of the market there is increased demand for rental properties as local people opt to rent instead of buying (also because mortgages are difficult to obtain). Although Portugal’s unstable financial climate is currently making headlines around the world, it still offers over 300 days of sun, has great golf courses and beautiful beaches, all just within a three hour's flight for most Europeans. Neither the desire to own a property in this beautiful part of the world has changed nor the attractiveness of the area. However, prices have. Medium to long term investors should take advantage of the opportunity. Many animal pests live in our gardening clutterheaps of pots, packets of fertilisers, bags of compost and so on. The tidier we are, the less homes we provide for the creatures that will attack our plants. Some pests are happy either indoors or out, but we are more likely to notice them indoors and so remove them before they can damage seedlings or our plants. Slugs and snails can get indoors, but they are usually found outside. If you have problems with mice or other small rodents, you may need to cover your seedlings - perhaps with netting rather than plastic or glass. The following descriptions below show some of the common pests and other animals you are likely to find on and around your plants.

Red Spider Mite Like aphids, these are sap-sucking insects. They also make minute webs around the growing tips or leaf edges, which may be more noticeable than the insects. Red Spider Mites are much smaller than aphids, and are usually found on the underside of leaves. Use a general insecticide or a systemic insecticide which might deal with these insects before you see them. Froghopper This is a small insect which is usually found in its nymph stage in a cloud of small bubbles, called 'cuckoospit'. The adults bear a resemblance to frogs and hop, hence the name. They are sap-sucking insects, damaging and weakening plants. Froghoppers usually occur in small numbers, and are easily removed by spraying with water. Leafminer Leafminers are the larvae of small insects. They feed on leaves, making tunnels between the upper and lower surface. The larvae are difficult to kill once they are in their tunnels, and the easiest way to deal with them is to remove affected leaves. If the infestation is severe, systemic insecticides may be effective. Sooty Mould, Black Mildew This is a small black fungus which grows on the honeydew produced by aphids and other insects. It does not actually grow on the plant, but on the surface of leaves, which blocks out the light and prevents Sootyphotosynthesis.Mouldcan be removed by wiping the leaf gently with a cloth or tissue dipped in warm water. Powdery Mildew This is an unexpected form of fungus, as it can thrive in dry conditions. Its effects include yellowing of leaves, and stunted or distorted growth. The fungus itself is then seen as visible white powder on the surface of leaves and stem. It can be dealt with by removing dead or damaged plant tissue, and some fungicides may be effective. Botrytis, Grey Mould There are several types of mould which can affect seedlings. They form grey or white fluffy patches on leaves or stems. Affected seedlings usually Preventiondie. is better than cure. Make sure the air around your seedlings is moving, as moulds like stagnant air. Damping off Damping off is a mysterious fungal disease which affects young seedlings for no apparent reason, causing them to fall over and die, often in patches. Sow seeds thinly, and water the soil with Cheshunt Compound (a mixture of copper sulphate and ammonium carbonate) before sowing to prevent attacks. Slugs Slugs are molluscs - snails without the shell - and are particularly fond of young seedlings. Slugs can be hunted out and killed individually, or you can take preventative measures. You can use slug pellets based on formalin, but use these with care as they are poisonous. Aluminium sulphate crystals kill the slugs by dehydrating them. You can make a beer slug trap and drown them. Snails Snails are the same as slugs, but more decorative and easier to pick up. You are more likely to get snails in places with limestone or chalk soils, as they need the calcium to build their shells. As well as demolishing small seedlings, they also munch holes in leaves. Snails are dealt with in the same way as slugs. Millipedes Millipedes are round, black, heavylooking insect-like animals about an inch long that you find under pots curled up like a spiral of wire. They have two pairs of legs on each segment, unlike centipedes, which only have one pair. Millipedes feed on decaying or soft vegetation, so can attack young seedlings, but they are not usually a problem. Centipedes Centipedes are brown, flat animals about an inch long with one pair of longish legs on each segment, and usually run away when you discover them hiding under pots. They are mostly carnivorous, and eat other pests such as slugs, so they are generally beneficial in the garden. Earwigs Earwigs are small thin brown animals with long antennae at the front and two long pincers at the back. They can damage plant buds and flowers, especially multi-petalled flowers like Chrysanthemum and Dahlia. They also eat small insects like aphids, so can be Earwigsbeneficial.canbetrapped in upturned pots filled with straw, or plants may be sprayed with systemic insecticide. Woodlouse The Woodlouse is a crustacean, with a greyish or brownish body about half an inch long divided into segments. Some species roll into a ball when disturbed. Woodlice live in damp places and feed mainly on decaying vegetation, so are generally beneficial to the gardener, although they sometimes attack seedlings. They can be caught and removed, or chemical control can be used if really necessary.
Caterpillars Caterpillars are the larvae of butterflies, moths and other winged insects. Their sole function is to eat plants until they are big enough to turn into adults. Caterpillars eat holes around the edges of leaves, but are not usually interested in small Caterpillarsseedlings.usually occur singly or in small numbers, so can be removed individually (and put in another part of the garden to complete their lifecycle if you like).

with long noses which lay their eggs in soil, particularly in pots of plants and seedlings. The larvae are about half an inch long, fat and white with brown heads but no legs. They eat the roots of plants, and often the first you know about it is when your plants are dead. The grubs are resistant to many insecticides, but you can use a soil drench, or biological control (nematodes which transmit a fatal bacteria), or you can pick them out of your pots by hand. Cranefly Craneflies are rather elegant, longlegged insects that emerge in late summer from eggs laid the previous year. The female can lay up to 300 eggs, usually just below the surface, often in lawns but also in garden soil. The Craneflies themselves cause no damage to plants, except when they emerge and leave their larval cases embedded in lawns. Damage may also be caused by birds looking for the larvae. Leatherjackets These are the larvae of the Cranefly, and are dark brown tough-skinned grubs around an inch long, living just below the soil surface. They can cause damage to the roots and other underground parts of plants, particularly grasses in lawns. Leatherjackets can be encouraged to come to the surface by watering the area and covering it with dark polythene. They can then be collected and disposed of. Fungus Gnat, Sciarid Fly One of the most troublesome pests in greenhouses, although it is mainly a nuisance to gardeners rather than a danger to plants. The Fungus Gnat is a small fly, breeding rapidly in warm conditions in leafmould, compost heaps and peat compost. The small larvae may damage plant Fungusroots. gnats can be dealt with by using sticky traps or an insecticide. Springtails Springtails are tiny insects that are often present in large numbers in pots, but may not be noticed until the plants are watered, when they jump all over the surface using their forked tails. They can damage the leaves, stems and roots of seedlings. Springtails can be dealt with by using an appropriate insecticide on the soil surface. These are only a few of the pests we find in our gardens and all can be dealt with in an organic way, or should the infestation become too great, then perhaps a more selective non organic method maybe required. In previous issues I've covered some of the ways to deal with garden pests and will continue to include details of how to keep your garden free from pests in future issues when dealing with specific plants. But remember, the best way to make sure you have little or no garden pests, is with good garden housekeeping, which will ensure many of the environments that bring about these problems are avoided. 00351963905615 y

When you are considering the purchase of a computer or replacing an existing one, you must decide exactly what you need. A computer was once a specialised, considered purchase, but now it is something you can pick up at the supermarket. This article aims to help you choose the one that will suit you and your needs.
THE key question that will help you decide just what sort of computer you will want and how much it will cost is "What do you want to do with it". Many vendors have budget options and type of computer from which to choose. Mini Laptop This is ideal for people who carry their computers everywhere, and need access to emails and the Internet. They are easy to carry as they are very small and fit into hand luggage. This of course is a necessary point to consider with the reduction of hand luggage to only one bag. The cheapest you’re likely to find is a Netbook. These are mini computers with reduced memory, and this option will not allow you to save many photos, videos, music and word-processing documents on your hard drive, however, there are many facilities on the Internet that enable you to store your information remotely. You will need a good permanent internet connection to access your data wherever you are. You can also carry an external storage disk or flash drive (USB pen) containing all your information. These are reasonably inexpensive, and are very useful should your computer have any problems. You can get obtain a Netbook for £300 or less, but the keyboard and screen will be small. Many people prefer a bigger screen and to store their documents on the computer itself. So decide what you’re going to be doing with your computer. Laptop Laptops give you a good size screen, keyboard, and greater memory capacity and processing speed. You can take them with you when you travel to give you more flexibility on when and where you use them. However, remember, the bigger the laptop, the more space it takes up when you are travelling. On laptops you are paying for the miniaturisation of the components that make the machine portable. Remember, repairs on laptops are nearly always more expensive than tower systems, as the components are much harder for technicians to Laptopsaccess. come in a range of prices to suit your budget, and many supermarkets carry good stocks. As well as selling laptops, Amazon offers free super saver delivery to Portugal on many of their items. Prices range from £299 depending on the specification you require. We are happy to advise people on this. It is very difficult to get English laptops in Portugal with English key boards, which is why we advocate buying from the UK.
This months topic from SBA computers is what to look out for when buying a new PC.

Desktop If you have enough space and portability is not so important, then choose desktop model which will be less expensive than a laptop. With this option, you can always replace the keyboard and screen later if you decide they’re not suitable. If space is at a premium or you want to work while you’re out, a laptop is better. Tower units are easier to repair than
Page 36 www.eastalgarvemag.com Technology laptops and can be a very good option if you really do not need to travel with your computer. Another rule of thumb is that if it’s light and fast, then it’s going to be more expensive than something heavy and slow. If you’re editing videos or music then speed is Youimportant.cannow get some very good screens for tower units with built in cameras for speaking to and seeing your family and friends, otherwise a separate camera with built in mic would be necessary. They are easy to acquire and are reasonably priced.
Technical Specification: Today's standard specification would have been termed as high specification only 5 years ago; because technology is changing extremely fast. If you are likely to have several programs running at the same time, then the amount of memory you have is as important as speed (‘memory’ being the active part of the computer, which governs the number of programs you can run at the same time). If you are interested in playing games, then something with a good graphics card is better than something designed for accountants. At the end of the day, it is better to ask the right questions before buying, to ensure you get the product you need that will do exactly what you want it to do. A good friend of mine is a carpenter, and he always says ‘measure twice, cut once’. A good rule of thumb I think. Do come and discuss your needs with us, as I have said, we are happy to advise.

TOUGH MEASURES IN PORTUGAL Meanwhile the €80bn Portuguese bailout is being worked out in Lis bon. The Social Democratic Party, which effectively forced out Jose Socrates by rejecting his austerity plans, is apparently willing to comply with the European and International Monetary Fund (IMF) representa tives. Ironically, as Michael Hewson of CMC Markets suggests, the terms imposed externally will likely be tougher than Socrates put forward. Time will tell whether the people will be able to swallow the necessary medicine of fiscal retrenchment. Our comment: Whether you are a business owner, a pensioner or someone settled (settling) here, you will be directly affected by the deci sions made at this summit. We can only hope that they come to their senses and follow the lead of Iceland rather than Ireland. The commercial bankers and bond-holders took the risk and expected the reward; the risk backfired and they must now ex pect to lose part of their investment. More expert tips from Benamor's resident professional, Keith Ashdown. Putting Almost half your shots in any round are putts so it is vital to develop a good stroke. If you putt well you are halfway to recording a decent score. Good putting is so important that just a handful of missed putts per round can mean the difference between a 19 and a 24 handicap. The object to every putt is to hole the ball. If you don't, try to ensure that the ball is past the hole but near enough so that your next shot is from close range. Anymore than 2 putts per green is a waste of strokes. After hitting tee and fairway shots 200m or more, you finish every hole by putting the ball into the cup. Putts vary in distance from a 25m one from the edge of a large green to a mere tap-in from the edge of the hole. However, most putts are between half a metre - 10 metres. Because a putt is normally quite short, it needs the shortest swing and least energy of any shot. Yet good putting requires precise stroke making. Rolling the ball. Putting requires a unique technique; rolling the ball along the ground. It is the only shot where the ball does not travel through the air. The ball travels over a special surface - the green - and you use a specially designed club - the putter, which has the least loft of any clubbetween 2º and 4° - so you cannot use it for gaining height on the ball. It is also the shortest club in the bag and the most upright, it is not built for distance.
Practise tip (head start) You should keep your head still while you putt, you can practise this indoors, by resting your head against a wall while putting on a carpet. Stand close to the wall and touch it gently with your head. Keep your head there so it can't move as you putt along the side of the wall.
Next month, more putting tips. Good putting, KeithShoulders, hips and toes parallel to line of putt. Line of putt.

All the latest local soccer news from Chris Wright. April Olhanense
Eastalgarve_Issue29.indd 44 03/05/2011 23:21
Last month Sporting Clube de Olhanense started their hundredth year of sporting service to the community of Olhão. One area where the club has had success over recent years is the boxing section. Under the astute leadership of trainer Tony Santos several boxers have won awards including João Vieira (Algarve Champion) and Andreia Silvestre, who won a National Women’s Title. The boxers train at the stadium on Monday, Wednesday & Friday evenings and would welcome new members.
April started with a 3-1 home defeat by relegation threatened Naval which moved Olhanense closer to the drop zone. Despite a long list of injuries there was no excuse for this lack lustre performance. The following week fifty fans set off for a weekend in Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal, where the Algarve side took on Beira-Mar. With regular keeper Ricardo Baptista sidelined due to irregularities with a drug test, it was down to Tavira born Bruno Verissimo to make only his second start of the season. And it was Bruno who kept the visitors in the game with two world class saves from Andre Marques & Wilson Eduardo inside the first ten minutes. A few minutes later and, with virtually their first attack, Olhanense should have taken the lead. Skipper Rui Duarte whipped over a cross that found the head of Dady but a deflection by Beira-Mar defender Rui Rego diverted the ball onto the post. On the hour mark a long through ball from the impressive Artur dissected the Olhanense defence and Wilson Eduardo easily beat the advancing keeper to slot the ball into an empty net. An improved performance but yet another defeat. P.Ferreira were the next opponents at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão. Both sides had lost their previous four games so a 0-0 draw was very much on the cards and so it was to be. A precious point which kept the 'rubro-negros' six points above the drop zone with three games to play. The vital fixtures are Benfica at home at the start of May followed by a trip to Madeira to play Nacional and then the last game of the season at home to Rio Ave on the weekend of the 14th/15th May.

On the 27th April, the date of the club’s formation in 1912, a Celebration Mass was held at the Matriz Church, Olhão followed by an activities session at the Olhanense Stadium in conjunction with the Cerebal Palsy Association of Portugal. This month's book review is about how to keep your mind younger. This book is useful, not only for discovering whether you are young or old brained, but also fascinating for noticing ways in which others are stuck in an old brain mode whatever their biological age. Do you have an ‘old’ brain or a ‘young’ brain? Think carefully, because how you answer this important question could be one of the most significant predictors of how well you’ll live the rest of your life. In this fast-moving, fast-changing world, it is important that we remain vital, relevant and useful. Growing old gracefully, where physically and mentally we quietly fade into obscurity, is no longer an option and the expectation that we will stay younger for longer has never been Agreater.‘young’ brain is the antidote to ageing and You Can Be As Young As You Think shows you exactly you how you can get one. Through six easy-to-follow and life-changing steps, you’ll find out that ageing is all in the mind and discover how, by developing a younger brain, you can live a more fulfilled, rewarding, successful and happy life. The benefits of living your life with a ‘young’ brain are vast. In your personal life you’ll have more fun, be more adventurous and be more excited. You’ll laugh more, get on better with your family and strangers will more easily become friends. You’ll be more interested and interesting, embrace new technology and feel better connected to popular culture and the modern world. In your professional life you’ll be more creative, more responsive, and better at managing change. You’ll be recognised as someone who’s fresh, vital, full of bright ideas and always thinking one step ahead. You’ll be more dynamic, more confident, more ambitious, a better team player and stand out as an innovator who’s more willing to take risks. Whilst many of us are agonising over the outward signs of ageing, it seems we are completely ignoring the insidious, gradual decline into tired, outdated and old thinking that until now might have been seen as an inevitable part of getting older. Well, it doesn’t have to be that way and You Can Be as Young as You Think offers a scientifically sound blueprint for successful antiageing. It’s a unique opportunity to rediscover freedom - the freedom to be open, to be flexible, to be Theexuberant.book contains an enlightening Brain Age Calculator which will examine your thinking and reveal the true age of your brain, often with surprising, and very thoughtprovoking results! Then the authors will take you step-by-step through the principles behind their Six Wisdoms of Youth and coach you in systematically training your brain to think and feel Theyoung.great thing too is that it doesn’t matter how old you are now for this exciting programme to revolutionise your life. If you’re young then this book will stop you from ever developing those mental cobwebs that will slow you down and clog up your brain. If you’re middleaged and worrying you’re already becoming out of touch, the book will quickly stop the rot and help you rediscover the younger you. And if you’re older and maybe wish you weren’t, this book will help you rejuvenate, revitalise and reignite your mind so you can live out your years with exuberance, excitement and youthful vigour. So, if you want a future in which you can really believe, and in which you can play an active and interested part; if you want a life that’s fun, stimulating and interesting, where every day offers a new challenge, new adventure and new experience; if you want to hold on to your curiosity, your spontaneity and your youthful vigour; if you want to feel younger and look younger for longer. It’s all possible. Growing old really is all in the mind, you can be as you young as you want to be, you can be as young as you think.
You can be as young as you think: Six steps to staying younger and feeling sharper, by Tim Drake and Chris Middleton.
