“Could Brexit affect pension transfers out of the UK? Should I take action now?”

Talk to the people who know.

PWK132-pt

The UK has already begun to tax transfers to QROPS. There are exclusions, such as where the individual and QROPS are in the European Economic Area, but who knows what will happen once the UK has left the EU? If you are considering moving your pension overseas, it may be better to do so now, under known rules, than wait and see what happens. Blevins Franks specialise in cross-border wealth management and can provide personalised, regulated advice on all your pension options, including QROPS.

ominees include Estoi, Faro (Monument Village); Alte, Loulé (Authentic Village); Bordeira, Aljezur (Protected Area Village); Ferragudo, Lagoa (Sea Village) and finally Cachopo, Tavira and Paderne, Albufeira (Rural Village). “The Algarve is a territory with diverse landscapes, including coastal areas, mountains, rivers, and of course, picturesque villages that are rich in tradition and charm and have a lot to offer visitors,” regional tourism boss Desidério Silva said. He added: “Our villages have a unique cultural and historical identity that shows in their monuments, handicraft and gastronomy. With this contest, we hope to show the public these unique parts of our region.” In the coming weeks, the regional tourism board (RTA) will be promoting the nominees which face the competition of 43 other villages across Portugal. Voting will take place in July through a series of TV galas, one per category. It will be open to everyone. Winners will be announced on September 3. Massage One of the oldest therapeutic techniques with proven benefits

T âœ

oday we live in a society that demands more and more time and dedication, which results in a great majority of people suffering from stress and multiple physical and psychological symptoms that naturally arise associated with it. Massage is one of the oldest forms of therapy with records on murals, tombs and ceramics in China, Japan, Egypt and Iran dating back over 5,000 years. However, with the evolution of medical science the simple

therapeutic technique of touch has been forgotten by many to the point that people question its benefits. To clarify this, researchers at CedarsSinai Medical Center in Los Angeles conducted a study on the effects of intense and light Swedish massage. To the surprise of these, the results demonstrated that a single intense Swedish massage session was able to cause biological changes: significant reductions in cortisol levels (the "stress hormone") in the blood and saliva occurred and an increase in the number of

lymphocytes (white blood cells that are part of the immune system). As for light massage, there was an increase in oxytocin (the "happiness hormone") and marked reductions in a hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol. In summary, relaxation massage increases tone and helps decrease muscle aches and cramps by increasing blood circulation and oxygenation of cells, helps to regulate bowel flow, stabilize blood pressure, stimulate lymphatic drainage and consequently the elimination of toxins. However, it should be noted that there are some health conditions that make massage contraindicated: deep venous thrombosis, insufficiencies and some cardiac, renal and vascular alterations, bone fractures, fever, infections, embolisms, infectious diseases. T

he month-long exhibit will kick off with two opening receptions for the artists on Friday, May 5th and Saturday, May 6th, from 16:00 to 19:00 (4-7pm). Clay artist Alexis Strong is a resident of Tavira, previously from Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Her handbuilt stoneware vessels were sold in galleries in New Mexico, California, Washington and Arizona. She has been working in clay for over 20 years, primarily creating “vessels which evoke an ancient, anthropological and ritual ancestry” with their unglazed and richly textured surfaces. Alexis has sold her work throughout the United States, in Europe and Japan. Photos

10

of her work are on Facebook at Zia Tavira Clay Works. Sculptor Wolfgang Spengler, who lives in St. Catarina, is a versatile artist working in stone, wood, cork and clay. His repertoire of subjects range from classic figures and faces in marble, to whimsical wooden creatures, and to smooth forms of shells, leaves and other objects of nature. His work has become popular with residents in the Algarve and have made their way into northern European homes as well, through the many art-buying visitors to Portugal. Several images of his sculptures are on Facebook at Sol Arte. Eliza Hafer paints from the imagination. Her figures and animals

emerge from the textures she creates with acrylics. Born in Massachusetts, USA, Eliza received her BA in Art and Anthropology from the University of California in Berkeley. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and art fairs in the US and have been published in several magazines. She received a Best in Show award at the Colburn Museum in Asheville, NC. This is her first show in the Algarve and includes a new series of sea animals. Images of her work can be found at elizahafer.com. The exhibit will continue through the end of May. Hours will generally be from 10am to 18:00; Fridays and Saturdays to 19:00. Closed on Sundays. For further information please call 966 604 426.

avira consists of a conglomeration of buildings, many of them sheltered beneath terracotta tiles with ornate balustrades and balconies and a huge variety of church spires. Adding to the urban clutter are recently installed water tanks, air-conditioning units and solar panels. Using a distinctive modern style, Juli faithfully recreates these unique buildings that span a period of almost 500 years. Remarkably some of them withstood Europe’s

strongest earthquake which took place off the Algarve’s west coast in 1755. Over the centuries Tavira has experienced huge prosperity as a shipping port and as an important centre for tuna fishing. Grand houses and more than 20 churches reflect the town’s illustrious past. The silting up of the River Gilão and the changing habits of the tuna shoals eventually lead to Tavira’s commercial demise. What is left behind enchanted Juli when she first visited earlier this year. Her pictures successfully sum up the

town’s present vibrant atmosphere by looking at its past. Charmed in equal measure by Juli’s paintings and Tavira, the owners of Côrte-Real feature a selection of her latest pictures at the gallery. Galeria Côrte-Real is Juli’s sole representative in Portugal and she is a regular participant at London’s prestigious Affordable Art Fairs. Space Saving BBQ

H

ow many times have you got to the end of a summer with a dirty, grease covered BBQ grill that you don’t even want to touch? The answer is probably: too many! ‘Space grill’ founder Ryan Martin was tired of that exact problem and decided to change the BBQ world forever. He set about designing the most practical BBQ ever invented, to suit every type of living areas from small rental apartments to Luxury homes. His first step was to make the unit visually appealing and “out-of-sight” when it wasn’t in use, easy right?… Maybe not. Making the BBQ fold

down without leaving a greasy mess of last Sundays left over juice all over the floor was not an easy task but this is probably the most unique part of Space Grill, the auto-swing drip tray moves intuitively with the BBQ, so that as you fold it down the drip tray catches any mess! Design dilemma number two was making the unit not just easy to use but something you enjoy using. The first thing people do when using their BBQ is decide which part of the grill plate they are going to use, then continue by lighting the ignition and turning on all the burners until they know which element they are going to use. Realising the potential waste and hazards this could cause, Ryan

added individual ignitions to each of the burners on the Space Grill meaning you only have to light the element you intend on using. Ryan grew up forever moving from apartment to apartment from which he took the inspiration to make the space grill fit everywhere from the biggest roof terraces to the smallest of balconies, all whilst keeping the great looks and high quality materials you expect from big BBQ's, giving you “the best BBQ in the world”. rte Bela is a new artisan boutique which has recently opened just a few minutes walk from the floral gardens in Bishops Square in the centre of historical Tavira. The owner Isabel Ribeiro, has spent the last forty years living locally in Altura after moving from her home town Viseu Castro Daire, East of Porto. With a flair and passion for artistry, Isabel opened a gift shop in Monte Gordo in 1991 with a small dedicated painting area. The worldwide economic crises unfortunately forced her to close the business and she joined the team at Castro Marim Golf for many years. Art was always close

to her heart and Isabel attended painting classes which culminated into a prize winning piece of work. As well as her love of painting she creates unique pieces of art work, together with jewellery and homeware. As the upturn in the economy began, Isabel’s success found her with four shops in Vilamoura and Monte Gordo in Portugal and Ayamonte and Islantilla, Spain. Isabel creates pieces of particular beauty with the ancient technique of Macramé. Macramé is the art of tying decorative knots and is done by hand, without needles and by weaving threads or cords together into simple or intricate, knots. Macramé is a French word that means

knot; it is one of the oldest forms of art. Originating from a 13th-century Arabic weavers’ word migramah meaning “fringe”, it refers to the decorative fringes on camels and horses which help, amongst other things, to keep the flies off animals in the hot desert regions of Northern Africa. Turkish makrama, “napkin” or “towel”, was a way to secure the ends of pieces of weaving by using the excess thread and yarn along the top and bottom edges of loomed fabrics. Isabel has studied and taught this ancient art form and together with her decorative pieces for the home, such as rugs, throws and table cloths, she has a large,

he first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic was made by the Portuguese naval aviators Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral in 1922, to mark the centennial of Brazil's independence. Coutinho and Cabral flew in stages from Lisbon, Portugal, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, using three different Fairey III biplanes, and covered a distance of 8,383 kilometres (5,209 miles) between the 30th March and 17th June. Although the North Atlantic had already been crossed with a non-stop flight by John Alcock and Arthur Brown in 1919, Coutinho and Cabral's flight remains notable as a milestone in transatlantic aviation for its use of new brand new technology, the early artificial horizon. The journey started at the Bom Sucesso Naval Air Station in the Tagus, near the Belém Tower in Lisbon in the Portuguese Naval Aviation aircraft Lusitânia, a Fairey III-D MkII seaplane specifically outfitted for the journey, complete with a Rolls Royce engine. The Lusitânia was testing an artificial horizon for aeronautical use, a

18

revolutionary invention at the time which was one of the main reasons for the flight. The first part of the journey ended on the same day at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, where the aviators noticed that the plane's fuel consumption was higher than expected. The journey resumed on 5th April, when they departed for São Vicente Island, Cape Verde, travelling 1,370 kilometres (850 miles). After making repairs they departed São Vicente on 17th April and flew to Praia on Santiago Island, and then to the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago, Brasil after flying 1,700 kilometres (1,100 miles) over the South Atlantic. They had reached this point relying solely on Coutinho's sextant with its artificial horizon (an adaptation of the traditional marine sextant now allowing navigation without visual reference to the real horizon, essential when flying through heavy fog or cloud.) However, when ditching on the rough seas near the archipelago, the Lusitânia lost one of its floats and sank. The two aviators were saved by the cruiser NRP

República, which had been sent by the Portuguese Navy to support the aerial crossing. The aviators were then carried to the Brazilian Fernando de Noronha islands. Enthusiastic Portuguese and Brazilian public opinion about the flight led the Portuguese government to send another Fairey III seaplane to complete the journey. The new plane, named Pátria, arrived at Fernando Noronha on the 6th May. After being refitted, the Pátria departed on the 11th May with Coutinho and Cabral on board. They flew to the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago to resume the journey at the point where it had been interrupted. An engine problem forced them to once again make an emergency ditching in the middle of the ocean, where they drifted for nine hours until being saved by the nearby British cargo ship Paris City, which carried them back to Fernando Noronha. A third Fairey III – named Santa Cruz after the wife of Epitácio Pessoa, the President of Brazil – was sent out, carried by the cruiser NRP Carvalho Araújo. On The 5th June the Santa

Cruz was put in the waters of Fernando Noronha and Coutinho and Cabral resumed their journey, flying to Recife, then to Salvador da Bahia, on to to Vitória and from there to Rio de Janeiro where they arrived on 17th June, 1922, ditching in the Guanabara Bay. The two men were greeted as heroes by huge crowds, along with aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. Although their journey had lasted 79 days, the actual flight time was just 62 hours and 26 minutes. In 1991 a monument designed by the architects Martins Bairrada and Leopoldo Soares Branco and the sculptor Domingos Soares Branco was unveiled next to the Tower of Belém, Lisbon. It is an exact copy, made from stainless steel, of the seaplane that made the journey, the “Santa Cruz”. São Brás de Alportel has just unveiled this remarkable replica outside the Municipal Piscina complex, in honor of the great men in Portuguese history. A marvelous memorial to great pioneers.

hether it is to upgrade, downsize or sell up and leave the Algarve, taking the decision to sell your property can be a difficult one. Acquiring the services of a long established and vastly experienced local real estate agent is vital. Good agencies are very pro-active in trying to sell your property and it takes a lot more than just uploading it onto one of the many property portals and sitting and waiting for an email enquiry to arrive. Property Information The first step is to meet with the real estate agent at your property, take time to show them round and explain all the workings of the property in detail. Discuss freely any issues that could create problems in the future such as an unapproved small extension or a damp patch in a basement corner. It makes far more sense if any issues concerning a property are addressed immediately as a delay after an agreed purchase gives the buyer time to question their decision or continue looking for alternative properties. Documents A real estate agent must have an understanding of written Portuguese and be able to acquire all the necessary property documents that are required by law in order to market your property. Your legal representative should have copies of all the updated documents. Marketing Price Agents must have an in depth knowledge of all local properties

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Property that have actually been sold and at what price. Unlike in countries such as the UK, the Netherlands, the U.S.A. and Germany, where property can almost be valued by a postcode, the expat market in the Algarve is very different. Property is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and this can vary hugely from buyer to buyer. A good real estate consultant must be able to evaluate a property based on comparable properties in the area and replacement value. In addition to market knowledge, this also requires excellent knowledge of materials, finishing’s and costing. Be open to discussing the best and most realistic marketing price for your property and always be careful not to price yourself out of viewings. Presentations Quality photographs and a good description are essential in the marketing of a property. Done correctly, a property description should entice potential buyers to view your property. Please remember that property

presentations are usually used as a tool that helps sell a viewing more than the actual property itself. Viewings One of the biggest complaints of vendors is of agents taking unqualified buyers to properties. Indeed there was an example recently of a gentleman with major mobility issues being taken to view a 3rd floor apartment in a building with no lift. It is imperative that your agent discusses in detail with the buyer and understands their specific requirements and needs and then carefully hand picks suitable properties to view. Once the agent arrives with the potential buyer, please let them do their jobs and remember, it is always better if the vendor steps out of the property at this point. Purchasers are rarely honest about a property in front of the owners and as agents they need them to be, so any concerns raised by the buyers can be addressed. If you would like to purchase a property in this little corner of paradise, then we urge you to

Eating flowers is currently on-trend. All you need to know by Janet O'Shaughnessy

Flowers you can eat

T

he culinary use of flowers dates back thousands of years to the Chinese, Greek and Romans. Many cultures use flowers in their traditional cooking–think of squash blossoms in Italian food and rose petals in Indian food. Adding flowers to your food can be a nice way to add colour, flavour, and a little whimsy. Some are spicy, and some herbaceous, while others are floral and fragrant. The range is pretty surprising. It’s not uncommon to see flower petals used in salads, teas, and as garnish for desserts, but they inspire creative uses as well–roll spicy ones (like chive blossoms) into handmade pasta dough, incorporate floral ones into homemade ice cream, pickle flower buds (like nasturtium) to make ersatz capers, use them to make a floral simple syrup for use in lemonade or cocktails. You can stuff gladiolus with squash blossoms–a little out-there, I know. So many possibilities…

34

Eating Flowers Safely So As lovely as eating flowers can be, it can also be a little…deadly! Not to scare you off or anything. Follow these tips for eating flowers safely. Eat flowers you know to be consumable–if you are uncertain, consult a reference book on edible flowers and plants. Eat flowers you have grown yourself, or know to be safe for consumption. Flowers from the florist or nursery have probably been treated with pesticide or other chemicals. Do not eat roadside flowers or those picked in public parks. Both may have been treated with pesticide or herbicide, and roadside flowers may be polluted by car exhaust Eat just the petals, and remove pistils and stamens before eating. If you suffer from allergies, introduce edible flowers gradually, as they may exacerbate allergies. To keep flowers fresh, place them on moist paper towels and refrigerate in an airtight container. Some will last up to 10 days this way. Ice water can

revitalize limp flowers. Allium All blossoms from the allium family (leeks, chives, garlic, garlic chives) are edible and flavourful! Flavours run the gamut from delicate leek to robust garlic. Every part of these plants is edible. Angelica Depending on the variety, flowers range from pale lavenderblue to deep rose and have a liquorice-like flavour. Anise Hyssop Both flowers and leaves have a subtle anise or liquorice flavour. Arugula Blossoms are small with dark centres and with a peppery flavour much like the leaves. They range in colour from white to yellow with dark purple streaks. Bachelor’s Button Grassy in flavour, the petals are edible but avoid the bitter calyx. Basil Blossoms come in a variety of colours, from white to pink to lavender; flavour is similar to the leaves, but milder. Bee Balm The red flowers have a minty flavour. Borage Blossoms are a lovely blue

hue and taste like cucumber! Calendula / Marigold A great flower for eating, calendula blossoms are peppery, tangy, and spicy–and their vibrant golden colour adds dash to any dish. Carnations / Dianthus Petals are sweet, once trimmed away from the base. The blossoms taste like their sweet, perfumed aroma. Chamomile Small and daisy like, the flowers have a sweet flavour and are often used in tea. Ragweed sufferers may be allergic to chamomile. Chervil Delicate blossoms and flavour, which is anisetinged. Chicory Mildly bitter earthiness of chicory is evident in the petals and buds, which can be pickled. Chrysanthemum A little bitter, mums come in a rainbow of colours and a range of flavours range from peppery to pungent. Use only the petals. Cilantro Like the leaves, people either love the blossoms or hate them. The flowers share the grassy flavour of the herb. Use them fresh as they lose their charm when heated. Citrus (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, and kumquat) Citrus blossoms are sweet and highlyscented. Use frugally or they will over-perfume a dish. Clover Flowers are sweet with a hint of liquorice. Dandelion I love dandelions. For teas or garnish lovely flavour

36

Dill Yellow dill flowers taste much like the herb’s leaves. English daisy These aren’t the besttasting petals–they are somewhat bitter, but they look great! Fennel Yellow fennel flowers are eye candy with a subtle liquorice flavour, much like the herb itself. Fuchsia Tangy fuchsia flowers make a beautiful garnish. Gladiolus Who knew? Although gladioli are bland, they can be stuffed, or their petals removed for an interesting salad garnish. Hibiscus Famously used in hibiscus

tea, the vibrant cranberry flavour is tart and can be used sparingly. Hollyhock Bland and vegetal in flavour, hollyhock blossoms make a showy, edible garnish. Impatiens Flowers don’t have much flavour–best as a pretty garnish or for candying. Jasmine These super-fragrant blooms are used in tea; you can also use them in sweet dishes, but sparingly. Johnny-Jump-Up Adorable and delicious, the flowers have a subtle mint flavour great for salads, pastas, fruit dishes, and drinks. Lavender Sweet, spicy, and perfumed, the flowers are a great addition to both savoury and sweet dishes. Lemon Verbena The diminutive off-white blossoms are redolent of lemon–and great for teas and desserts. Lilac The blooms are pungent, but the floral citrusy aroma translates to its flavour as well. Mint The flowers are– surprise!–minty. Their intensity varies among varieties. Nasturtium One of the most popular edible flowers, nasturtium blossoms are brilliantly coloured with a sweet, floral flavour bursting with a spicy pepper finish. When the flowers go to seed, the seed pod is a marvel of sweet and spicy. You can stuff flowers, add leaves to salads, pickle buds like capers, and garnish to your heart’s content.

Oregano The flowers are a pretty, subtle version of the leaf. Pansy The petals are somewhat nondescript, but if you eat the whole flower you get more taste. Radish Varying in colour, radish flowers have a distinctive, peppery bite. Rose Remove the white, bitter base and the remaining petals have a strongly perfumed flavour perfect for floating in drinks or scattering across desserts, and for a variety of jams. All roses are edible, with flavour more pronounced in darker varieties. Rosemary Flowers taste like a milder version of the herb; nice used as a garnish on dishes that incorporate rosemary. Sage Blossoms have a subtle flavour similar to the leaves. Squash and Pumpkin Blossoms from both are wonderful vehicles for stuffing, each having a slight squash flavour. Remove stamens before using. Sunflower Petals can be eaten, the bud steamed like an artichoke. Violets another famous edible flower, violets are floral, sweet, and beautiful as garnishes. Use the flowers in salads and to garnish desserts and drinks.

Renting your property to tourists

s more and more tourists visit Portugal, it is worth considering renting your property as a way of reducing the annual costs of owning a holiday home. Currently there are nearly 42 thousand rental licenses registered in the Portuguese Portal of Tourism, but this number is growing every day. For instance a year ago there were around 30 thousand licenses issued, which means an increase of nearly 850 new licenses each month. If you are considering renting your property, there are several questions that you need to be aware of in order to avoid any problems with the Portuguese licensing and tax departments. First of all, you need to bear in mind when you rent your property in Portugal, that irrespective if you are a tax resident or not, the rental income will always need to be declared in Portugal. Secondly, the Tax Authorities (Finanças) state categorically that Property Owners letting directly to holidaymakers (less than 30 days)

are viewed as business activity and must be reported in Category B. Despite this, several taxpayers have been declaring rentals on Category F, this should be reserved for “longterm” rentals (more than 30 days). Only the “locação turística”, when the property owner makes a contract ceding the property to an agent for ongoing letting to tourists, may be taxed under category B or F. The main reasons for you to comply with this new law, are: 1. ASAE and the tax authorities are checking the rental portals (air bnb, hollidaylettings, etc), to make sure that the properties advertised are all legal and the owners are fully compliant. Fines are considerably higher for those not advertising the AL license number; 2. Tax is extremely low if you are on this scheme; as a non-resident you pay as little as 8.75% tax, instead of being taxed at 28% (this is not a typing error you read it correctly, 8.75% opposed to 28%). The tax is even lower, for hostels, guesthouses and other properties where you can rent a single room, instead of the

whole property: 3.75%. So why take unnecessary risks and not obey the law? Please find below some questions and answers, to help you understand a bit more about the local lodging: 1) As a business, will there be complicated accounting/reporting requirements? No, unless your income is over €200,000 per year, we will class you on the “Simplified Regime” and as the name says, everything will be simple. 2) What is the simplified regime and what expenses can I offset against my rentals? Most of the Sole Traders in Portugal elect to operate under the Simplified Regime when opening their business activity. Under the simplified regime taxpayers cannot deduct professional and business expenses against their annual gross income. The taxable income of this category will be computed automatically, based on their income. 3) What is the tax payable on the simplified regime on my rentals? The effective tax rate on Category

Making Life Easier

B, in the simplified regime, for a non-resident Property Owner will be 8.75%, for apartments and villas and 3.75% for hostels, etc. So, for earnings of €10,000 the taxable income, equates to €875 in a villa or apartment. Please note that under Category F, on the same income taxed autonomously at 28%, the tax liability would be €2,800, 3 times more! 4) Do I have to issue invoices to holidaymakers? Yes, you need to issue invoices, however, this is a service included on our package, so we will do this for you. We will also simultaneous report the arrivals and departures to the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) at no additional cost. This is also mandatory under the new law. 5) Will I need to be VAT registered? You can be VAT registered by choice or when your income exceeds €10,000 per year. However as the VAT charged to holidaymakers is 6% as a tourist activity and as most of your operating expenses has VAT at 23% rate, normally you should be in credit in terms of VAT. 6) Do I have to pay Social Security contributions? There are various full and partial exemptions that apply in most cases: a) many people are eligible for full Social Security exemption if they already contribute to or are beneficiaries of a National Insurance system anywhere in the EU and beyond; b) those earning less than €7,222.22 in Local Lodging income are also fully exempt (16.852€ in case of an hostel); c) those who earn more, have contributions based on their taxable income (35% of gross Local Lodging invoices) and should be eligible for partial reductions from the normal contribution of €145. 7) How long does it take to get this rental license? Depending on your urgency, we can

complete the registration at the tax office and the application to the tourism office, in 48hrs allowing us to have your AL number in 2 days! The AL license is valid for 10 years. 8) Do I pay capital gains if I decide to stop renting? In most cases you won’t have a problem with the capital gains. However is advisable to seek personal advice, so you can plan ahead a future sale of the property. 9) What do I need to report to SEF? All property owners need to report to the SEF (Emigration Office) the entry and exit of all guests with nonPortuguese nationality. The Portuguese Fireplace in the New Forest

A novel form of military power! BELOW: Portuguese troops in London

Portugal and the great war 100 years ago

L

Chris Wright follows up on last months article on the Battle of the Lys.

ast month Neil Beever gave us a poignant insight into the Battle of the Lys in 1918 during the Great War and Portugal’s remembrance ceremony which takes place on the 9th April each year. In the Battle of the Lys the German Sixth Army deployed eight divisions (about 100,000 men), supported by intensive artillery fire. Against this force the Portuguese had 20,000 soldiers and 88 guns. As a result, the 2nd Division was annihilated. The Portuguese CEP (Portuguese Expeditionary Corps) lost 327 officers and 7098 soldiers, about 35% of its effective fighting capacity. But let us go back two years to 1916 as Portugal entered the war when they complied with the British request to confiscate thirty-six German and Austro-Hungarian ships docked in Lisbon. On the 9th March Germany declared war on Portugal, followed by Portugal's reciprocal declaration. Early the following year Portuguese troops were sent to the New Forest in southern England to help with a timber shortage in collaboration with the Canadian

44

Forestry Corps. The Canadians were better equipped for the environment than the Portuguese, who at one point went on strike due to the lack of provisions and suitable winter clothing. Following this, special arrangements were made so that the Portuguese received sufficient food more akin to their usual diet of fish, bread, potatoes, beans, rice, green vegetables, onions and olive oil. Today the area is known as the Portuguese Fireplace which is all that remains of one of their huts. Prior to being transported to France the Portuguese Expeditionary Force had undergone military exercises and outfitting in Sussex. The first Portuguese troops landed in Brest and in early April Private António Gonçalves Curado became the first Portuguese soldier killed in action. Further afield four civilians were killed in early July when a German U-boat bombarded Ponta Delgada, in the Azores and in December 1917 two U-boats bombarded Funchal on Madeira with three fatalities. But it was following the Battle of the Lys that Aníbal Augusto Milhais

“Soldado Milhões” (a soldier worth a million others), became the most decorated Portuguese soldier of World War I and the only Portuguese soldier awarded the nation’s highest honour, the Military Order of the Tower and of the Sword, of Valour, Loyalty and Merit. The presentation took place on the battlefield in front of 15,000 allied soldiers instead of the usual public ceremony in Lisbon. A permanent exhibition remembering his achievements can be seen in the Military Museum in Porto. The museum also houses a magnificent collection of some 16,000 miniature soldiers dating from the time of the English Civil War. Another attraction is the collection of cannons, combat vehicles, firearms and ancient weapons, covering a period from the 15th to the 20th century. So it was that the United Kingdom’s oldest ally became an integral part of World War One. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance (or Aliança Luso-Britânica), ratified at the Treaty of Windsor in 1386, between England and Portugal is the oldest alliance in the world that is still in force.

efeats at the hands of Sporting Lisbon ‘B’, Ac Viseu, SC Braga ‘B’ and Leixões plus a single point in the 1-1 draw with Vizela has guaranteed that SC Olhanense will finish bottom of the Segunda Liga come the end of May irrespective of the results of their last four games. Next season the team will be playing non-league football for the first time since 2004 when they gained promotion. Club President Isidoro Sousa, said "this is a sad day for the club and I still do not believe what is happening", with the end of a thirteen year period when the club has played in the top two professional leagues. How the club will now proceed is very much down to the Italian investors under the leadership of former Italian World Cup referee Luigi Agnolin. SC Olhanense are now the subject of a second PER (Special Revitalisation Process) whereby the club must come to an agreement with its creditors. These are dark days for a club that celebrates its 105th anniversary at the end of last month. "For now, we are doing what was agreed, although with great difficulties, but I fear for the future," said Isidoro Sousa. Elections

46

were scheduled for the 2nd May, if candidates were forthcoming. Isidoro Sousa added, "I call on the people of Olhão including those in charge of the Council, with whom there will be a meeting soon, and the 500 paying socio-members to unite in a concerted effort to save this historic club”. In recent years Olhanense has been coached by such illustrious names as Jorge Costa the former FC Porto and Portugal international, who took Olhanense up to the Primeira Liga in 2009, “it saddens me to see what is happening at Olhanense and in particular for the wonderful people of Olhão who do not deserve to see the club sink so low " Costa, who managed Olhanense between 2008 and 2010, recalled that historic day in May 2009. “ I experienced one of

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright. the happiest days of my coaching career, when we gained promotion to the Primeira Liga for the first time for more than thirty years”. Another coach who spent time in Olhão was Sérgio Conceição now the boss at top flight French outfit Nantes whilst Abel Xavier, now in charge of the Mozambique national team, managed the team four years ago. TOP VERSUS BOTTOM With over fifty points separating the two teams SC Portimonense will be firm favourites when they host Olhanense on Sunday 14th May kick-off 11.15am. The following Sunday (21st May) sees a woeful season draw to close in Olhão when Penafiel are the opponents. Kickoff 4.00pm at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão (behind McDonalds on the EN125)

he club, who were relegated from the Segunda Liga last season following an administrative error and subsequent points deduction, have again fallen foul of the authorities. The Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation has penalised both Aljustrelense and Farense with a three points deduction and 1020euros fine following their game on the 6th November last year. The game was terminated by the referee just before the scheduled final whistle following incidents involving several players. Farense were winning 1-0 and could now lose six points. SC Farense are unhappy with the delay in the decision of the Disciplinary Council. "It is not considered acceptable that sporting justice takes more than five months to come to a decision and whose implementation could jeopardize all the investment and effort made during the season", reads a statement released by the club.

spectacular three-day Celebrity Classic golfing event will be held in Vilamoura from 29th June to 3rd July in aid of Centre Algarve, Moncarapacho, a charity for special needs families. Sporting greats already confirmed include Clive Allen, Darren Anderton, Ray Clemence, Steve Lomas. Gerry Taggart, Pat Jennings, Mick Hartford, John Lacy, Mark Falco, John Pratt, Bryan Gunn, Gordon Durie, Matt Elliott and the Charity’s Patron, Graham Roberts. Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May, recently awarded the Centre’s founder, Andy Mahoney, The Points of Light Award and in a personal letter to him she described Centre Algarve as “supporting people with special needs and their families to be able to enjoy the experience of visiting a foreign culture in a safe environment...helping to build a better world for everyone.” The golfing event has been organised with great attention to detail and promises to be an exceptional weekend for all. However, its main goal is to provide financial support to continue the great work of the charity by enabling them to offer more families the opportunity to holiday at the Centre Algarve (www.centrealgarve.org). The event includes four nights’ accommodation at the 5* Tivoli Hotel, which is in a prime location in Vilamoura’s picturesque marina, three fabulous Oceanico golf courses, traditional Portuguese food in the ambience of a local restaurant, as well as a BBQ lunch at one of the oldest golf courses in the Algarve. No more 3 putts! This months tip from Bart van der Wind, professional at Benamor Golf

H

ow can you ensure you always make 2 putts or less? A good practice drill will help for sure! Also your mind set is very important, set yourself a reasonable goal. If you are more than 4 meters from the hole, aim to get it close, within one club length from the hole. My favourite drill is to hit 5 balls from different lengths (4-6-8-10-12 meters) from the hole with a circle around it.

48

The goal is to make sure the ball stops in the circle. When you have played the 5 balls

Pro stats

you play them again from a different position (uphill, downhill and sidehill lies). The good thing about this drill is that you always practice a different putt, just like on the Name: Bart van der Wind course.
