T Moncarapacho's olive oil wins 10 Gold awards in Japan and USA Von Rosen planted 20 hectares with olive trees in 2000. The goal was to test if it is possible to make top quality olive oil in the Algarve and in 2014, when the first significant awards were being won - the answer was ‘yes’ and he saw early success before his death. In the New York competition this year, the Monterosa olive oil was up against more than 900 oils from 27 countries and won gold medals for all the mono-varietals entered into the contest, Maçanilha, Cobrançosa, Verdeal and Picual, as well as in a contest for the best mixed oil. This is the sixth consecutive year that Monterosa olive oil has won gold in New York, which, to the managers, "denotes the sustainability of the quality and excellence of the product and its visibility and recognition at international level." In the contest in Japan, of more than 600 olive oils from 25 countries, Monterosa won five gold medals for the three monovarietals - Maçanilha, Cobrançosa, Verdeal - and for a new olive oil released this year, ‘Horta do Felix.’

Will EN125 roadworks cripple summer traffic flow?

A

fter the announcement that only €300,000 is to be spent on repairing the crumbling EN125 eastern section, the mayors of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António met representatives from the Eastern EN125 Citizens' Movement and all agreed that the planned roadworks are just window dressing and represent a lack of respect for the eastern Algarve population. The Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, announced that "emergency works" will be carried out, starting in the second half of May and that these will be concluded “before the summer.”

he Extra Virgin Olive Oil Monterosa, produced in Moncarapacho by Viveiros Monterosa Lda, has won ten gold medals at two international competitions. At the New York International Olive Oil Competition in New York, Monterosa olive oils won five medals. Earlier in the week, at Tokyo’s Olive Japan 2018 in Tokyo, the oils won five awards. The decision to enter the highly competitive olive oil business was taken some years ago by Detlev von Rosen whose untimely death in 2016 shocked the village of Moncarapacho which has supplied workers to the Viveiros Monterosa plant export business since the 1970s. Monterosa Olive is a relatively new product within the well established Viveiros Monterosa business. The investment in state of the art processing equipment was not taken lightly and has been paying off as year after year, the Moncarapacho olive oil has been beating more established competition from around the world.

Benefits of Omega 3, Duarte Arrais, Fisioclube, Fuzeta

O

mega 3 (alpha-linolenic acid) are healthy fats, essential for building the cell membrane, they bring benefits to the skin, immune system, cognition, weight loss, contributing in various ways to the proper functioning of the body; thus, helping to prevent cardiovascular disease and strokes. The benefits are mainly related to its effect on blood vessels, by preventing the formation of clots that can break away from the artery wall and obstruct blood flow (thrombosis), a major cause of heart attacks and strokes, and also helps to lower the viscosity of the blood, which also improves blood circulation and has a vasodilatory action, that is, it relaxes the arteries and helps lower blood pressure. It also helps to increase the nutrition and oxygenation of tissues. Another ability of omega 3 is to lower bad cholesterol and lower triglycerides and increase good cholesterol (HDL), and that prevents the deposition of bad fats on the walls of arteries (atherosclerosis). In addition, omega acts positively on the immune system, on the regulation of body temperature and the loss of water by the body. In pregnancy, omega 3 helps the growth and development of the fetus and its entire nervous system, stimulating the brain and boosting the transmissions between nerve cells. After birth, especially between 6 and 12 months of age, omega 3 increases the field of vision and neuropsychomotor development of the child. The use of omega 3 is also beneficial for the neurogical system; the mielin chains that help to protect and regenerate the nerves need this essential oil to be healthy and keep a normal function. It has also a great effect in our mental health and cognition, improving mood, motivation, memory, concentration and learning. By helping to control the appetite and stimulate the action of insulin, omega 3 can contribute to the process of weight loss. This essential oil also has a huge impact in hormonal balances and in a good endocrine function. Omega 3 is mainly present in fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, trout and mackerel, sunflower seeds, corn and olive oils, but can also be found in large amounts in the oils of grape, canola, sesame, soybean, palm, chestnuts, almonds, walnuts and avocado. As a food supplement, it must be taken according to the specific indication, for the best benefits. Omega has a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action, so it fights the harmful action of free radicals, helping to prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature aging. Epsom Salts

Enjoying a resurgence and now available at Alfresco's Conceição

E

psom salt is a potent mineral compound comprised of magnesium and sulfate. It is widely used to relieve many minor health issues. Soaking in a bath with Epsom salt can relieve achy feet and soothe sore muscles. Epsom salt is used in skin cleansers and hair care products to help naturally exfoliate skin and give hair more volume and shine. Many people also turn to Epsom salt as a remedy for occasional constipation as ingesting food grade Epsom salt flushes the gastrointestinal tract and encourages detoxification. WHAT IS EPSOM SALT? Epsom salt is named after the English town of Epsom, where the substance was first produced. Although it is referred to as “salt,” it does not contain sodium and despite sharing similar physical characteristics, has different properties from table salt. For instance, adding Epsom salt to warm bath water makes your skin feel smooth and silky, while table salt has a drying effect. For this reason, Epsom salt is a common ingredient in bath salts that cleanse and soften skin. All products labeled as Epsom salt are essentially the same, but there is a difference between “food grade” Epsom salt and non-food grade Epsom salt – the latter being produced for agricultural use. The former will bear the “USP” designation, which means it is certified according to standards set by the United States Pharmacopeia and the Food and Drug Administration. Because agricultural or garden grade Epsom salt

10

is not manufactured under the same conditions, it may contain contaminants. WHAT MAKES EPSOM SALT WORK? Epsom salt has two major components: magnesium and sulfate (sulfur). These minerals are essential for optimal health. Magnesium is a cofactor involved in more than 300 enzymatic processes, including protein and DNA synthesis, the regulation of blood pressure and serum glucose levels, and supporting the body’s detoxification routes. Magnesium is also required for the uptake of calcium and potassium, both of which are necessary to regulate nerve, muscle, and heart function. Sulfate is involved in several biological functions as well, most notably in the gut. This mineral facilitates the release of protease, lipase, and amylase, which are pancreatic enzymes needed to digest food. It is needed to form specialized proteins in epithelial cells. These cells line and lubricate your intestinal tract to keep things moving smoothly and prevent intestinal bacteria from leaking into the bloodstream. Sulfate is also required for the prenatal development of brain tissue. Dietary sources of magnesium include whole grains, green leafy vegetables, nuts, and seeds. 10 EPSOM SALT BENEFITS • Soothes inflammation • Relieves discomfort caused by sunburn • Relieves itchiness caused by poison ivy • Helps reduce stress • Fixes magnesium

deficiency • Supports recovery after exercise • Relieves occasional constipation • Promotes radiant skin and hair • Relaxes tired, aching feet • Fertilizes your garden Due to the beneficial qualities associated with magnesium and sulfate, Epsom salt is used as a natural remedy to support many health issues including inflammation, constipation, and strain from exercise. It may also help remove splinters, relieve a sunburn, and soothe the itch from poison ivy. Bathing with Epsom salts is a healthy way to reduce stress, while at the same time promoting the elimination of environmental toxins from your body and increasing new cell turnover through exfoliation. It is also used in beauty regimes and can even be added to soil for a healthier garden.

STEELING the show at Benamor

Benamor Golf , near Tavira is showcasing just some of the impressive work of Carlos de Oliveira Correia along the entrance to its welcoming scenic club house.

T

he club house overlooks the the 9th hole and the small lake and, as well as the resident ducks and swans, the lake and the mature flower beds are now a temporary home to Carlos’s magnificent sculptures. Created from wire, stone and iron they are all made at his workshop near to Castro Marim. Angolan born Carlos moved permanently to the Algarve in 1974. His work has spanned 10 years and is widespread accross the Algarve but notably he is the creator of the magnificent 9ft tall Knight on horseback at the Castro Marim roundabout. This piece was commissioned by the local council to honor the medieval festival which takes place within the castle walls in August, each year. From his home in the spectacular hills above Castro Marim, he explained; "It had started as a hobby after working in land registry and also studying architecture". In his nearby workshop, he is currently working on a full size replica ship that will stand near to the impressive new board walk in Monte Gordo. Carlos’s work can also be seen in São Brás, which we featured some time ago, and is a full size replica aeroplane, the original piloted by a local man. It weighed an incredible 15 tonnes. Carlos commissions private works and is constantly working. We plan to feature his full remarkable story and of course bring the pictures from all around the local area in the near future but for now you can find more on his Facebook page. It was a pleasure to see his new work being prepared and to meet him and we look forward to bringing you his full amazing story very soon. You can contact Carlos on 966 040 432 or see Facebook 'Carlos de Oliveira Correia'.

Riding the Ria Formosa

From absolute beginners to regular riders, a ride along the Ria Formosa with Tavira Equestrian Tourism should be on your bucket list!

Y

ou might imagine that an unforgettable horseback ride in paradise requires at least some basic experience; however, this dream activity is made a reality with or without any prior lessons by Tavira Equestrian Tourism from Quinta Baleeira, near Cabanas. The family home of Maria Campos for generations, it is surrounded by their private scented orchards of oranges and avocados which lead down to the stunning Ria Formosa coastline.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Maria is a veterinary physician who studied in Lisbon and Spain then followed her passion, working around the world with horses. The project evolved a year ago, after discussions with her boyfriend Jesus GrandesMelgarejo who has the established riding school, Centro Ecuestre Las Marias, in Spain. They decided to combine and Tavira Equestrian Tourism began in July 2017. Centro Ecuestre, also breed fine Spanish horses, and Quinta Baleeira is now home to the young foals one of which (pictured) was just a day old. Riding directly from

17

People the gates of the Quinta, guests immediately find themselves calmly meandering through the orange and avocado trees and, after 15 minutes you’re able to see the stunning coastline beyond the eucalyptus trees. The horses are very calm, and are suitable for riders of 4 years and older. The stunning Ria Formosa lagoon is calm and perfect for the horses as there are no waves, which makes it possible for the complete novice, as we were, to experience the thrill of entering the water with the horse. Experts Maria and Antonio guide clients along the beach making it very easy to enter the water as well as take in the amazing scenery. A magical experience made possible by Maria and Antonio’s professionalism, the serene animals and the stunning scenery. This is a really empowering and fun experience that can be enjoyed by experienced riders or, as in our case, with literally no prior experience at all. We would thoroughly recommend a visit. Maria can arrange rides to include lunch for singles or groups of up to 10. A must do in the breathtaking East Algarve; it was a real pleasure. e just had to share these extra photos with you. A day before we visited Tavira Equestrian Tourism this beautiful male foal was born and named Infante. His legs were still a little wobbly but it didn't stop him scampering around in the sunshine. Then the day before we were at Benamor golf taking photos of the sculptures, these six Cygnets hatched. Many thanks to José Lourenço from Benamor for sending the wonderful picture above.

e recently sold a plot of land with stunning sea views in the Central Algarve to a friend of mine and during our discussions he asked me about the best way to design and finish the property in order to help sell it quicker and for a better price in the future. After contemplating his question for some time, indeed there are certain styles, features and specifications that seem to have a greater appeal to a larger percentage of potential buyers. Quality: It is a common saying and is very true – quality sells. The better the quality of construction, finishes and decoration the more appeal a property will have. KITCHEN: To the general annoyance of the cook but the place everybody normally congregates in and arguably the most important room in the property. Properties with a large, bright, practical and welcoming kitchen are normally the most appealing. If possible, make sure that the kitchen has a good dining area or at least bar stools set along a breakfast bar. Embrace the fact that family and guests will always gravitate towards the kitchen so therefore make socializing in them comfortable. BEDROOMS: Must be of a decent size with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. An en suite bathroom with heating is also a bonus. BARBECUE: We live in a climate that demands we dine outside and therefore barbecue’s are an essential part of that lifestyle. If space allows, build a barbecue with a large summer kitchen complete with covered dining area and try and make sure that it is as close to the internal kitchen as possible. A sink,

www.eastalgarvemag.com

a refrigerator, glass and plate storage and an entertainment centre will all add an extra appeal to this vital area. HEATING AND COOLING: 20 years ago Algarve property buyers generally used their villas in summer and, as a result airconditioning was the favoured method of temperature control. With a huge improvement in insulation within properties, combined with many more foreign buyers utilizing properties through the colder winter months, heating systems have become a crucial luxury to include. Whether one chooses underfloor heating, central heating, electric heating or air-conditioning make sure that the system is as cost effective as possible and practical to operate. GARAGE: Always useful and also good for storage. When design allows, try and make sure the garage has internal access to the main property. WINDOWS: Bright is best. Make sure the property has plenty of natural sunlight. There are so many different types of windows available from double glazed to triple glazed, from shatterproof to gas filled windows and from low-emissivity

coatings to spectrally selective coatings. Quality windows and high quality frames are a necessity in any Algarvean modern home. SHUTTERS: Electric shutters are very easy to use and keeps out unwanted sunlight and heat when required. SOLAR PANELS: With over 300 days of sunshine per year, the installation of solar panels makes sense on Algarve properties. This popular form of green energy is a great way to reduce those utility bills. Apart from heating domestic water, solar panels are also used in underfloor heating and swimming pool heating. SWIMMING POOL: As they are predominantly a playground for children, having the swimming pool visible from the villa is high on the request list, particularly from families. However a pool is also a fantastic way to exercise and therefore must appeal to adults too. Therefore make sure that the swimming pool is large enough to be able to offer the opportunity to swim lengths and exercise at leisure. GARDENS: A hugely important area. Gardens are unique and individual to each property and, it is an area that we spend a huge amount of time in them or observing them. Gardens go a long way to complimenting properties so make it as attractive as possible. Keep in mind

The

Tomato Story

Who would believe that it was the tax man who answered the age old question!

F

ruit or Vegetable? An interesting aspect of tomato history is the classic debate: Is the Tomato a Fruit or Vegetable? I guess that depends on whom you are asking. By definition, a fruit is the edible plant structure of a mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually eaten raw; some are sweet like apples, but the ones that are not sweet such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. are commonly called vegetables. Botanists claim that a fruit is any fleshy material that covers a seed or seeds where as horticulturists point of view would pose that the tomato are a vegetable plant. Until the late 1800's the tomato was classified as a fruit to avoid taxation, but this was changed after a Supreme Court ruling that the tomato is a vegetable and should be taxed accordingly. When it is all said and done, the history of the tomato has classified as a poisonous beautiful plant, a tax-avoiding fruit, and a taxable vegetable. Nonetheless, the tomato is the most popular vegetable in America and enjoyed by millions all over the world. Tomatoes belong to the genus Lycopersicon (Solanaceae family). Evidence supports the theory the first domesticated tomato was a little yellow fruit, ancestor of L. cerasiforme, grown by the Aztecs of Central America who called it ‘xitomatl’ (pronounced zee-toe-má-tel), meaning plump thing with a navel, and later called tomati by other Central American tribes. Aztec writings mention tomatoes were prepared with peppers and salt, likely to be the original salsa recipe. The tomato’s actual origin is thought to be Peru in South America where it grew wild (like a weed) several thousands of years before making its way north to Central America.

34

Presently, eight species still grow wild in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Some believe Spanish explorer Cortez may have been the first to transfer the small yellow tomato to Europe after he captured the Aztec city of Tenochtítlan in 1521, now Mexico City. Yet others believe Christopher Columbus, an Italian working for the Spanish monarchy, discovered the tomato earlier in 1493. The earliest discussion of the tomato in European literature appeared in an herbal written in 1544 by Pietro Andrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist, who named it pomi d’oro, golden apple. However, Mattioli’s review was a bit of bad press for the tomato as he and other distinguished authors continued to review the tomato as unhealthy or inedible because of its link to other members of the Solanaceae, notably deadly nightshade (Atropus belladonna) as it resembled the leaves of the tomato plant. Deadly nightshade, a poisonous plant, was used as a hallucinogenic drug and a beauty aid in parts of Europe. Its name “belladonna” (meaning beautiful woman) referred to ladies in medieval courts who applied drops of nightshade extract to their eyes to dilate the pupils, a look considered fashionable at the time. The hallucinogenic nightshade induced visions and a feeling of flying, forever associating it with witchcraft. Old German folklore reveals witches used nightshade to conjure up werewolves. Interestingly, the German name for tomato translates to wolf peach. And in the 18th century, Carl Linnaeus, noting German legend, named the tomato Lycopersicon esculentum meaning edible wolf peach. Although the tomato circulated widely throughout Europe (as an ornamental plant from the New World), suspicion continued and its use in European cuisine evolved slowly over a period

Gardens

two hundred years. The yellow cerasiforme (original stock) that crossed the Atlantic into Europe with Spanish explorers continued to be hybridized into red and orange cultivars by 1623 and extensive hybridization continued in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. The first cookbook to mention tomatoes was published in Naples Italy in 1692. By 1752 English cooks used tomatoes in the flavoring of soups, and in 1758 a tomato recipe appeared in The Art of Cookery by Hannah Glass. Still, the tomato remained under suspicion when it returned to North America with colonists in the mid 1700s. Thomas Jefferson served tomatoes and French fries at his table in the 1780s. In 1820, Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson announced that at noon on September 26, he would eat a bushel of tomatoes in front of the Boston courthouse. Spectators turned out to watch the poor man die, yet they were shocked when he lived. By 1858 a seed merchant named Buist wrote this about the tomato, “There is no vegetable on the catalog that has obtained such popularity in so short a period. “ In 1863, 23 cultivars were listed in the catalog – among them an heirloom tomato named ‘Trophy,’ the first modern-looking, large red, smooth-skinned variety. By 1880 nearly two hundred cultivars had been named, although a study at Michigan Agricultural College in the late 1880s concluded of 171 cultivars only 61 were truly from different lines. Names of heirloom tomatoes have continued to reflect their own history: ‘Polish’ is said to have been smuggled into the US on the back of a postage stamp in the late 1800s; ‘First Pick’ was grown by generations of the Baptiste family in Reims,

www.eastalgarvemag.com

France; ‘Besser’ came from Freiburg Germany; ‘Amish Paste’ has been cultivated in Pennsylvania since 1870; ‘Jeff Davis’ a cultivar from Alabama honored the Confederacy; and ‘Ace’ was introduced by the Campbell Soup Company in 1953, to name only a few. Growing Tomatoes The basics of growing tomatoes are relatively simple. Tomatoes like warmth, sun, and plenty of water. They can be grown in the ground and take well to containers, so they can be grown just about anywhere. It may look like work, but once you pop the first ripe fruit into your mouth you'll be hooked. Cultivation Most varieties will just sit there well after the last frost if the night temperature is less than 55 degrees. The more sun they get the more robust the plant, the more they'll flower, and of course those flowers are the source of the fruit. Water well and deeply. Aim for uniformly moist, but not soggy, soil. It makes all the difference in how well your plants will do. The following may help you with your plants: Tomatoes also like raised beds. The warmer soil is conducive to better growth. Unless there is a reason to not use them, they are definitely the way to go. For indeterminate varieties, build a trellis structure or use a tall bamboo teepee to which you can tie the growing vines. Tomato cages may not be big enough. Bushy varieties do fine with tomato cages. Transplant about two weeks after the last frost date if at all possible. The earlier you can get your plants moved into the garden the better; however, cool or damp weather is not the

35

Gardens

tomato's friend. Keep soil moist and avoid letting it dry out. Uneven watering can cause a host of problems including blossom end rot. If you intend to fertilize, use a 5-10-5 fertilizer and be sparing. Over fertilization is worse than no fertilization at all. Pinch off suckers that form at the joint between the stem and branch. No point in wasting valuable plant energy on pointless growth. Soil Tomatoes are pretty tough and will grow in just about any type of soil. However, the richer the soil the more likely you will be able to raise beautiful tomatoes organically. Washed dairy compost is nutrient rich and won't burn young plants. It holds water well too, which is vital for tomato growth and happiness. Mulch to retain moisture with straw. Some folks like to add moisture granules to their soil and pots to retain moisture...especially when they might miss a day or two of watering. Disease and prevention Some tomato varieties are more susceptible to fungus, bacteria, and nematodes than others. And such vulnerability is usually compounded by your growing zone and soil type. Commercial varieties usually indicate on the tag, with a designation like VFN for example, if they are resistant to such systemic diseases as verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, or nematodes. If your tomato plants get sick and die quickly, the chances

36

are good you have some type of systemic disease. If they lose all their leaves or leaves get curled, yellow, or just drop, it's more likely to be one of the many foliage diseases. Only a professional can diagnose the problem for sure. You may be able to diagnose the problem by contacting your county extension service or through a reliable nursery. As with most things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Buy disease-resistant plants if you can. Heirlooms may not indicate any disease resistance, but that most likely means they haven't been lab tested for pathogens. Check some of the gardening message boards on the Web for tomato gardeners in your region; you may be able to determine which varieties are more resistant to prevalent diseases or problems in your area. Experience is also a good teacher, which is another reason for growing a several different types of tomatoes. You can prevent foliage disease by keeping the leaves dry, which means watering at the base of the plants, not overhead. Also, a southeastern exposure is ideal because it is both warm without being hot, and the early morning sun dries dew so leaves don't remain damp for long. Also, but no less important, don't water your tomato plants at night unless you are using a drip irrigation system. Space plants so they are well ventilated and not too crowded.

Charity

The Associação Animals Lost Paradise found

T

An update from Mark and Janet O'Shaughnessy

he associação Animals Lost Paradise found has had a very busy time in their first 4 months of the year. The biggest was the rescue of 43 cats from an illegal kennels along with 2 horses, all of which now have been sterilized or awaiting sterilization. The funding for this has come from the support of the public through fundraising events, such as a quiz afternoon in Cabanas and a meat and cheese pie evening at Calico Park. Also with the help of AGA cat charity, they have now been able to pay for the sterilization of all of the rescued cats. Unfortunately, the need for your support doesn’t stop here, as currently they have 3 families of cats with kittens

all needing to be sterilised when the time is right. If you want to help or are interested in attending any fundraising events in the future, you can find out more on their facebook page or keep your eye on the magazine. The need for help for the associação is not just with funding for animals, although now with an estimated food bill each month of €500 and additional vetenary costs, the need for donations is always important. But they also need to find new homes for these cats and dogs, so you can also adopt either a dog or a cat by visiting www. associationanimallostparadisefound. com and if you cannot adopt an animal you can always become an animal’s sponsor, thereby helping not only your

Tourist rentals: What you need to know!

W

hile more and more tourists are visiting Portugal it is worth considering renting your property as a way of reducing the annual costs of owning a holiday home. Currently there are over 70,000 rental licenses registered in the Portuguese Portal of Tourism, but this number is growing every day, for instance a year ago there were around 42,000 licenses issued, which means an increase of nearly 2,350 new licenses each month. If you are considering renting your property, there are several issues that you need to be aware of in order to avoid any problems with the Portuguese licensing and tax departments. First of all, you need to bear in mind when you rent your property in Portugal, that irrespective of whether you are a tax resident or not, the rental income will always need to be declared in Portugal. Secondly, the Tax Authorities (Finanças) state categorically that Property Owners letting directly to holidaymakers (less than 30 days) are viewed as business activity and must be reported in Category B. Several taxpayers have been declaring rentals on Category F, this should be reserved for “long-term” rentals (more than 30 days). Only the “locação turística”, when the property owner makes a contract ceding the property to an agent for ongoing letting to tourists, may be taxed under category B or F. The main reasons for you to comply

with this new law, are: ASAE and the tax authorities are checking the rental portals (air bnb, hollidaylettings, etc), to make sure that the properties advertised are all legal and the owners are fully compliant. Fines are considerably high for those not advertising the AL license number; Tax is considerably lower if you are on this scheme, as a non-resident you pay as little as 8.75% tax, instead of being taxed at 28% (this is not a typing error you read it correctly, 8.75% opposed to 28%). The tax is even lower, for hostels, guesthouses and other properties where you can rent a single room, instead of the whole property: 3.75%. So why take unnecessary risks and not obey the law? Below are some questions and answers, to help you understand a bit more about the local lodging: As a business, will there be complicated accounting/reporting requirements? No, unless your income is over €200,000 per year, we will class you on the “Simplified Regime” and as the name says, everything will be simple. What is the simplified regime and what expenses can I offset against my rentals? Most of the Sole Traders in Portugal elect to operate under the Simplified Regime when opening their business activity. Under the simplified regime taxpayers cannot deduct professional

and business expenses against their annual gross income. The taxable income of this category will be computed automatically, based on their income. What is the tax payable on the simplified regime on my rentals? The effective tax rate on Category B, in the simplified regime, for a nonresident Property Owner will be 8.75%, for apartments and villas and 3.75% for hostels, etc. So, for earnings of €10,000 the taxable income, equates to €875 in a villa or apartment. Please note that under Category F, on the same income taxed autonomously at 28%, the tax liability would be €2,800, 3 times more! Do I have to issue invoices to holidaymakers? Yes, you need to issue invoices, however this is a service included on our package, so we will do this for you. We will also simultaneous report the arrivals and departures to the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) at no additional cost. This is also mandatory under the new law. Will I need to be VAT registered? You can be VAT registered by choice or when your income exceeds €10,000 per year. However as the VAT charged to holidaymakers is 6% as a tourist activity and as most of your operating expenses has VAT at 23% rate, normally you should be in credit in terms of VAT. Do I have to pay Social Security contributions? Since the 1st of January of 2018, with effect to 2019, the Local Lodging

Expert financial advice By Andy Oliver, deVere, Portugal.

The importance of investing throughout retirement.

R

etirement for many investors is the end goal in their financial journey. After all, they have saved their money for many years to get to

retirement. However, if only it was so easy. If you don´t have the funds needed in retirement to live a comfortable lifestyle it can be a rather arduous existence. Although this might seem obvious, it is doubtless an important distinction to remember. When retirement is viewed as an end goal, many people are tempted to stop investing once they have reached it. It is typical for people to move their money into investments that are perceived as being “safe” or to completely move their investments into their bank account or

other similar cash instruments. Justifiably, you can understand why this would be tempting to take your pension out of the investment; you have saved your entire life to reach retirement. By making such an oversight you could see your pension savings being completely wiped out, for example by market volatility. Whereas, if you moved your money into a “safe” investment you would avoid that volatility. As people are living longer after retirement, the safe investments are likely to have little to offer in ways of return. When some people spend more time in retirement than they did in working and investing, they must take into consideration the trade-off between risk and return that frames nearly every

investment decision. If they want to play it safe, the cost of that safety is potential return. Which leads onto the importance of return in retirement. It is essential to continue to grow your savings in retirement. Inflation affects nearly every aspect of your life, from groceries and petrol to health care. There is simply no way to avoid the steady increase in the cost of living; and, as such you need investment growth to combat that inflation. Take into consideration this scenario: you retire with £1,000,000 and plan to withdraw £50,000 each year for living expenses. Your funds are in a safe investment and have no growth. That income would last you 20 years. So if you retired aged 55 your pension would only last until you were 75. Unfortunately, there is simply no way that you can comfortably live on the same amount for 20 years; over time, that £50,000 would decrease in spending power due to inflation. You would be forced to withdraw more money every year to pay for higher-priced commodities. If we look at a “safe” investment assuming inflation was 2.5% every year, your savings would last 17 years. If inflation were at 3% your savings would only last 15 years. In retirement safety is important, but you should not underestimate the need for growth. The fundamental problem in retirement is how to balance the two. So how can we solve the fundamental problem? Moving your prior investments into a safer investment after retirement is of course correct, but one shouldn´t take it to the extreme of moving it into lower return instruments. A wise approach would be to shift the allocations gradually over time into safer investments, giving you a blend of low-volatility assets and those that generate a higher return. Retirement can be complex and fraught with risk, making it daunting to navigate. Here at deVere, our financial advisor can develop a personalised action plan that can guide you to your future goals.

Turn life upside down Meet Annett from 'Iyoga' who brings Iyengar Yoga to Tavira. So forget all you thought you knew about Yoga, this is different... this is Iyengar Yoga!

T

he beautiful historic town of Tavira is a haven of well-being, and Annett Mottlau brings a profound, unique and uplifting new business at IYoga. Annett is a qualified IYengar teacher with 20 years of experience, being inspired by the master Guru B.K.S. Iyengar, who is undoubtedly the best recognized and most influential yoga teacher in the world. B.K.S. Iyengar was born on the 14th December 1918, and lived his 95 years to the full before passing away in August 2014. Iyengar founded the style of yoga known as Iyengar Yoga which now benefits millions around the globe. Annett, from Denmark now lives in Cabanas. Her modern studio, fully equipped with blocks, belts, chairs, bolsters and blankets is right in the heart of Tavira. Annett had a remarkable professional career in the hotel industry, most recently with the Pestana group. She was a senior member of the team for 10 years from 1995, which saw the prestigious chain rise from 10 to 35 hotels around the world. At the time Annett was based in Cascais, Portugal but in 2005 she decided that it was time for a change; time to turn her

44

life upside down! Her mother had been taught in Pune, India, by Iyengar himself back in the eighties and was a dedicated, qualified teacher. Inspired by her mother from a young age, Annett had been a qualified teacher prior to her successful career, and decided it was where she wanted to be again, learning and teaching. Iyengar yoga with Annett focuses on the body’s natural alignment to promote healthy joints, bones and importantly the mind. We are absolutely thrilled that she will be bringing us regular articles full of inspiration and enthusiasm, as well as classes for all levels from her studio. She also has private classes as well as holding workshops and retreats. The studio in Tavira is located above the 'Remax' office in Tavira at Rua Montalvão 7, 2nd floor right-hand door, 8800-420 Tavira. For more information: See Annett's Facebook page, 'Iyoga - Iyengar Yoga Portugal', Telephone: +351 917 567 422 or email: iyogaportugal@gmail.com website: www.iyogaportugal.com Look out for a full feature on B.K.S. Iyengar and his Yoga method in next months issue.

WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA?

Iyengar Yoga is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment. Iyengar pioneered the use of "props" such as cushions, benches, blocks, straps and sand bags, which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully than might otherwise be possible without several years of practice. Props also allow elderly, injured, tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully "supported" methods requiring less muscular effort. Unlike more experiential approaches where students are encouraged to independently "find their way" to the asanas by imitating the teacher, an Iyengar Yoga class is highly verbal and precise, with misalignments and errors actively corrected. Iyengar teachers complete at least two years of rigorous training for the introductory certificate. They may complete subsequent intermediate levels and senior levels of certification, potentially entailing a decade or more of training.

onsecutive defeats at home to Armacenenses (1-2) and away in Lisbon against Casa Pia (0-4) scuppered Olhanense’s chances of qualifying for the Campeonato Portugal play-offs. A failure to put the ball in the net has been a problem all season with Rúben Fidalgo and Stevy Okitokandjo top scoring with six a piece. In the final two games of the season - a win at Montijo (2-1) and a home draw against Estrela FC - manager Nilton Terroso drafted in several fringe players including the highly rated young keeper Leandro Turossi plus former junior players Rui Santos and Nilson Jesus. There are rumours that the Italian run Olhanense SAD (limited

liability sports company), who own 80% of the professional club, are keen to sell but with debts thought to be in the region of €1.5m and an annual playing budget of €650,000 it would take a brave person to rise to the challenge. Just down the road SC Farense were celebrating a record points haul as they finished Campeonato Portugal Division E winners with eightyone points having won twenty-six and drawn three of their thirty games. They must now be favourites to gain promotion to the Segunda Liga. Moncarapachense, Lusitano VRSA and Almancilense are among the clubs relegated to local league football next season.

Golf

'Look at the hole' putting drill Bart van der Wind, resident professional at Benamor Golf

T

here is a practice putting technique that many pro golfers use to work on feel and distance control. It's a practice technique that a few of them have even taken onto the golf course during tournament play. Jordan Spieth is the best example. Tests in America say that most golfers find that if they look at the hole while they are practising, it really has a great benefit to their distance control." So try it yourself with the next with this drill: Step 1: Drop a few balls about 10 feet from the hole. Putt the first one as you normally would. On the second one, do everything the same except that just before initiating your stroke, look at the hole. Don't keep your eyes locked on the golf ball - twist your head a little to the left (for right-handers) so that your eyes are now looking at the target. Then pull the trigger. Step 2: Now do it again. And roll enough putts in this way that you become comfortable with the technique of looking at the target rather than the golf ball. Step. 3: Now move around to different spots on the green, different lengths of putts. Drop two golf balls at each new spot. Use your normal putting technique for one ball, but use the look-at-the-hole technique for the other. Alternate between the two at each different spot on the practice green. Compare the results. How are you doing? If distance control is your issue, you might discover that looking at the hole while putting helps you in that regard. Bart van der Wind
