Welcome to the November issue of the East Algarve magazine. This month we focus on Alcoutim, a little off the beaten track, but a wonderfully unspoilt area with beautiful views, definitely well worth a visit in our opinion. Elsewhere we were invited to a local tile factory, where owner Xico explained the historical tile making process, and his future plans for the factory. Our featured recipe comes from the stunning A Ver Tavira restaurant, located adjacent to Tavira Castle, and we have more golf tips from the resident professional at Benamor golf. This month’s gardening pages continue with part two of our feature on roses, and in our health pages we have an exclusive interview with Cranial Massuese and Osteopath Catherine Pauwels. hope enjoy this month’s

Dear East Algarve Magazine, It was disappointing not to read the name of Antonio’s restaurant, in Moncarapacho, in your article of the said village. A more friendly family you could not come across, a spacious dining room, internet cafe, good menu and food, which all leads to relaxed dining. John W. Roy. Moncarapacho Dear John, Thank you very much for your email, all feedback is very much appreciated. We sincerely apologise for not mentioning Antonio’s restaurant in our article on Moncarapacho. Unfortunately, it is not possible to mention all establishments in our Focus on pages, as we simply don’t have time to try them all personally. However, if there is somewhere we know and feel readers would enjoy, we try to recommend them. By way of apology, we have placed a free advertisement for Antonio’s in this issue

A ccording to the National Institute of Statistics, over 30% of 2.8 million Portuguese holidaymakers came to the Algarve last July, August and September. Central Portugal attracted 27.3% of internal tourists and the North 13.3%. Aiming to improve services for visitors, the Regional Tourist Authority has opened new “turismo” posts in Monchique and Aljezur. Additional posts will soon be in operation in Alcoutim, Monte Gordo and Praia da Rocha.

T he protests about the controversial, high-tension Tunes – Portimão electricity line which will affect areas in the East Algarve especially Santa Catarina and Tavira just will not go away First there was a hunger strike in November 2007, carried out by nine Vale Fuzeiros residents in front of the Republic Assembly, then the campaign by the MATA Residents Committee leading to the latest statement by Isabel Soares the Mayor of Silves who has said: “I hope REN changes its attitude and that we find a solution, otherwise we’re going to court.”
World March for Peace in Tavira
A ccording to the Vice-Chairman of Turismo do Algarve, the Eastern Algarve should create more marinas as the market is currently decentralised towards the West Coast, with Vilamoura being the furthest marina eastwards, considered to be central Algarve. “If there were more moorings for boats to dock we could attract more people all year round, and create more jobs, issues that worry us” stressed Almeida Pires. T avira is now officially on the map of the World March for Peace! On Friday 2nd October, a multinational music and dance event marked the start of the World March. Espírito do Tambor gave a recital of African Rhythms and then the Rancho Folclórico de Santo Estêvão gave a colourful display of Portuguese Folk music and dancing. The evening ended with a jazz session from the new trio Chips Salsa and Jazz. The group ́s line up is Gordon Railton, Dhiren van den Bergh, and Andre Walton. The next World March event is at 6 pm on 11 November when Peter Kingdon Booker dedicates his talk on the Battle of Talavera (commemorating the bicentenary of the Peninsular War) to the global inititative. The event will be held in the Porta Nova Hotel, Tavira. His talk will be followed by a dinner at 7.30 pm in the hotel. A wide and eclectic range of new and used books in the English language, as well as a generous helping of used and collectable books in Portuguese and French. Also a wonderful selection of children’s books. Special orders and book finding service available. Gift certificates.
As I write this, it’s still only October, so it is with a bit of reluctance that I refer to the “C” word. However, the holi days do have a way of sneaking up on us, and whether you’re going to be spending them here or abroad, if a small child figures in your Christ mas plans, I want to use this space to tell you about the selection of board books that I have on hand at the Boardmoment.books are a terrific way to introduce little ones to the joy of books; their sturdy pages and di minutive sizes make them ideal for small hands. Some titles deal with such basic themes as colors and the alphabet, but many others are complete stories adapted from their original picture book format. John Burningham, the author of “Mr. Grumpy’s Outing”, has a really nice little alphabet book, illustrated, as al ways, with his light touch, and set in an uncluttered layout. Each letter is accompanied by a single word and a simple, perfect drawing. Dr. Seuss’s smaller ABC book is a different kettle of fish. Each page is filled with zany characters and typical Seussian al literations showing us many uses for each letter. The smallest of the bunch, and my best seller, is Rich ard Scarry’s “Cars and Trucks From A to Z”. This little book drives us through the alphabet in tiny vehicles like a bananamobile, a hot dog car, a pencil car and a zippermobile; each mode of transport is driven by im possibly small creatures, from pigs to worms to ants. Before I became a bookshop owner, I couldn’t have told you the name of even one illustrator. I still have a lot to learn, and I’m lucky to have so many interested customers who share their knowledge with me. My favorite artist up to now is Garth Wil liams. Many of you may know him from his work in E. B. White’s won derful books “Charlotte’s Web” and “Stuart Little”. In addition to those two titles, and several others in the very inexpensive Little Golden Books series, I have three titles among my board book collection that I have to mention...”A Tale of Tails”, “Baby Animals”, and “Little Fur Family”. I confess, what I find most appealing about these little jewels is that the drawings are so innocent, old-fash ioned, really bright, and comforting. They present such a perfect little world, and I think that’s a lovely kind of book to put in young hands. Have a good month, and I’ll see you in December. Liz Beaupied, A Lura dos Livros

Meet Xico, owner of a Santa Catarina tile factory as he explains how tiles are made, using a 3,000 year old process.
byWritten BassettRichard This month we were kindly invited to look around a Santa Catarina tile fac tory by Francisco Antonio Alves, Xico for short, and his friend Aleta. His tile factory has been there for 56 years, nestled in the heart of Fonte do Bispo, Santa Cata rina. He is currently renovating the factory to make it more environmently friendly, and is evolving the process to be more efficient. Tile making has been done this way for 3000 years, but Xico has created new glazed tiles in 28 beautifull different colours. Xico intends to open the factory to the public to help pro mote tourism and show how the famous tiles are created. He will be offering workshops, whereby the public can create their own masterpieces, fire and glaze them. He is also building a studio, bar/kitchen area by hand using 9000 bricks so far and plans to bulid a new kiln specifically for local artists to use. The famous brown/orange clay is excavated from the ground where it remains in a large pile for 1-2 years whilst the clay gets pre pared for use by the natural elements. This type of clay is found all the way to Vila Real. The clay sample is taken from a metre down and tested to see if it is ready for use by its feel, colour and texture. Xico has dug a large hole in the ground where he puts the broken tiles etc and plans in time to be able to re-use the materials, once bro ken down by the elements. The clay is excavated and placed on a small conveyor belt; it is then ground up in a pit, and mixed with water, then left for a day. It is then shovelled into a grinder and placed in a large box. Enough clay to make one tile is then picked up and manipulated by hand into a square mould. Each tile is smoothed with water and placed in a wooden rack to dry. The tiles are then placed into a pallet and taken via a small forklift over to the kiln. The tiles are loaded specifically into the kiln by hand. The kiln can hold up to 22,000 tiles at full capacity, 50 tonnes which equates to the weight of 3 double decker buses full of passengers! The fire is lit solely using pine cones and ground olive stones as kindling and wood, all locally sourced. The black smoke is made because of the lack of oxygen in the kiln which does not burn the small particles of wood, not be cause tyres are being burnt! The firing pro cess removes the iron oxide from the clay. Usually fires are lit on Fridays, giving the weekend for the kiln to cool before someone has to squeeze in underneath it and shovel out all the ash. Not a job for the faint hearted wiith the weight of 3 buses on you. Xico has frequently melted his clothes as well. The kiln gets its strength from the brick built arches it rests on, as in the Roman bridge in Tavira.

After the tiles are removed, the best ones are chosen. Xico is currently in the process of making the tiles thinner for environmental purposes. The tiles are taken to another area where the glazing takes place. A mixture called slip is sprayed onto the tiles, the glaze applied and it is fired again in a different kiln which reaches a lower temerature of 980 degrees, whereby the first (bisque firing) kiln reaches between 10101050 degrees. This process is called double firing, which improves the re sisitance and strength of the tile. Xico creates a variety of coloured tiles which have been used predominently for walls and floors but also for bespoke pieces, eg for a design on a kitchen splashback. He has also recre ated damaged tiles for historical buildings and old churches. If you would like a guid ed tour of the factory and the opportunity to pick up some free samples, please contact Aleta on 916 411 179. For more information please also see the following Welishsotero-lusitana.co.ukwww.sotero-lusitan.comwebsites,orwww.fortheengversion.hopeyouenjoyedthisinsight into the world of Santa Catarina tiles and we will be bringing you an update on the prog ress of the new studio in a later issue. Above photos from left to right: 1, Clay is excavated and left to stand for up to two years. 2, Clay is cleaned, ground and dried. 3, Tiles are smoothed with water, moulded by hand then dried on wooden pallets. 4, Into the kiln and fired between 1010 and 1050 degrees. 5, After glazing, the tiles are placed into a gas kiln and re-fired at 980 degrees.

info@eastalgarvemag.com People It all began in 1994 when Dutchman Peter Westera bought a beach bar in Cabanas. Peter had never been to Portugal before and bought the building solely by seeing photos. In March 1995 he came to Caban as to see just what he had bought. Peter did not know what to expect, only knowing it was a very old beach bar. He had to tear it down and build it again from scratch. Draughting in 10 of his friends to help with the mammoth task, they worked every day from 6 in the morning until late. After a hard day’s work, they often enjoyed a few beers in Quasimodo’s Cocktail bar. Just a week later the new beach-bar was re-born, and named Happy Paradise. Every year Peter visited Cabanas with his wife Diane and their children Mike and Frederique, for their holi days, and to see how the beach bar was doing. In 1998, they discovered that their favourite bar Quasimodos had closed down. The owner asked Peter if he was interested in renting Quasimodos bar, and after much de liberation they decided to go ahead, remembering the many great eve nings they had spent there. After a few years, Happy Paradise was sold and replaced by Quasimo dos, which was renovated, enlarged and made twice the size. In 2006 Peter sold his Tennis and Squash centre in Holland and he and his wife emigrated to Portugal, with Mike and Frederique following a year later. Both had ready made jobs in DuringQuasimodos.thistime Cabanas saw many developments, with many new prop erties bought by Irish and English. Many people were asking if there was an Irish bar in Cabanas. Mike’s dream had always been to open his own bar/restaurant and saw this as a great opportunity. The Piano Bar on the boulevard was for rent in November 2007. Being next to Quasimodo’s, it seemed a good location to create the Irish Bar. The whole family went to Ireland to get an impression and some ideas for the upcoming Irish Pub. When they returned Mike and his father Peter started renovating the Piano Bar. Everything was ripped out including the ceiling and floor. After 3 months of hard work, they opened their doors on the 28th of April 2008. Due to it being adjacent to Quasimo do’s and the Irish theme, they named the bar Esmeralda’s. A friend of Mike’s, who worked in Holland at that time, wanted to come over to work during the summer months. Her name was Guillette, also known as Gigi. After working long hours together, romance began to blossom. The first year of Esmeralda’s was very busy, so instead of staying three months, Gigi stayed for almost six. In October she went back to Holland. On Octo ber the 30th (Halloween night) Gigi called Mike to tell him great news; she was expecting their first child. Soon after, Gigi made the move to Portugal to be with Mike. On the 6th of July their baby boy was born, and they named him Ki eron Michael. Moth Mike’s dreams had come true. This year has been the busiest sum mer for the new parents, juggling work with a newborn baby, and also with a lot of visits from friends and family. The bar is open every day, ex cept Tuesdays, for lunch and dinner; they have live music twice a week, quizzes and karaoke, although they will be closing for a well earned rest in December and January.

Ihave heard that some of you have had a chance to try Reconnection Healing with Lesley, (featured in October’s issue) and are getting very positive results from those ses sions. It is always good to find new ways to get the most out of our lives. This month I met with Catherina, Os teopath and Craniosacral Therapist, who treats people from her clinic in Tavira. The clinic is ideally located with free parking very near by. Where are you from Catherina? I am from Brussels in Belgium. What languages do you speak? I speak French, Portuguese and English How long have you lived here? 10 years What do you practice here in the Algarve? Osteopathy and Craniosacral Ther apy. What is Osteopathy? It is a manual therapy to find and treat mobility restrictions. A loss of mobility and problems with the spine can cause pain, but can also affect the function of the human body, for example, digestion, breath ing and heart rate Mobility trouble from the sacro iliac joint or lumbar vertebras can also cause problems with the knees. An osteopath looks at the person as a unity. What is the Craniosacral therapy? It is a gentle manual and manipula tive technique, done with little pres sure, applied on the cranio sacral system. It means principally on the head, vertebral column, the neuro logical contents and the connective Thistissues.treatment acts on the deepest structures and organs of the nervous system and can influence motor, pain and coordination mechanisms, the digestive system, the respiratory system, heart function, and the en docrine system. Receiving cranio sacral therapy is very relaxing and positively pleasurable. Tell me things you can treat well with this therapy? Stress and nervousness, dizziness, headaches, muscular problems and spinal cord injuries, cramps, chronic neck and back pain, balance, fibro myalgia and chronic fatigue. What is one of the best results you have had with a patient? A child with hyperactivity. It was very difficult for him to come and stay on the treatment table, he was always moving. I made as quick as possible the most important correction. After the treatment he was calm with no more restlessness. The child stayed calm all week and when the parents brought him for the second treat ment, he came in, sat on the table, took his shoes of, lay on his back and waited for me to start his treatment. It was much easier because he knew I could help him to feel better. What do you like about your job? I help people to feel better and I am always learning new things. What is difficult in your job? Some people believe we can solve their problem with only one ses sion. Sometimes it is possible, but most of the time it is not enough to get a complete result. The pain they feel could be new for them, but the trouble is older. The pain starts be cause the body cannot compensate anymore. What is important in the relation ship between patient and thera pist? Listening to the person. What the pa tient tells me is important. If the pa tient doesn’t speak freely it is impor tant to ask questions and his body will give me the true indication. What is your health tip for our readers? It is important to have a healthy diet and to be active. Yoga is very good to maintain the body in good condi tion. Also walking, swimming and cycling. What is your favorite food? I like Thai food, Vietnamese food and Indian food. I also like Cozido a Portu guese, Favas, and Bacalhau a Bras. What did you do for a job and training, before you become an osteopath? At the start of my career I was work

Focus on...Alcoutim
A lcoutim is a pretty village on the banks of the Guadiana river, about 40km north of Vila Real de Santo António. As long ago as 2,500BC, the region around Alcoutim attracted people because of the deposits of copper, iron and manganese and in Roman times a number of mines were es tablished. The ores were smelted locally and then shipped down the Guadiana to the Mediterranean. Alcoutim became quite an important settlement as it is here that the river becomes tidal and the ships often had to wait for hours for the tides. The remains of a 14th century castle can be seen on the hillside overlook ing Alcoutim and now houses a small archaeoligical museum. Similar cas tle remains can be seen on the hill on the Spanish side of the river, over looking the village of São Lucas do Guadiana. They are visible remind ers of the times when Portugal and Castile were at war with each other, and it was in the middle of the river opposite Alcoutim that Kings Hen rique and Fernando I signed a peace Alcoutimtreaty. is a hillside town of cob bled streets, small squares and a paved promenade along the river front, which is overlooked by a handful of cafes and restaurants. The river is quite narrow at this point and various sailing boats and river craft float gently on the waters, with a backdrop of rolling, green hills. The church near the river front originates from the 16th century, but has been re-built on a number of occasions. Over the porch are the arms of the Marquises of Vila Real and Counts of EvenAlcoutim.ifyou are not staying in Alcou tim it really is worth driving there, not only to see the town itself, but also to enjoy the unspoilt countryside that you pass through. If you follow the EN122 north from Castro Marim, the first small detour is to the left on the 1132 to the Barragem do Beli che (dam). Go back to the EN122 and continue north until a right turn to Foz de Odeleite (on the 1063). This is where the Ribeira (brook) de Odeleite joins the Guadiana river. The surrounding area is rich in wild flowers and there are a few houses interspersed with vegetable gardens and fruit trees dotted along the road Thereside. are a few moorings along the banks of the river as it gently meanders through the countryside

Focus on...Alcoutim with the rounded, green hills in the background. It is so peaceful and a wonderful area to walk in, and is quite unlike the Algarve that most people know. Carry on through Ála mo to Laranjeiras and Montinho das Laranjeiras (where the remains of a Roman villa have been uncovered) and finally to Alcoutim. Alcoutim is in a beautiful setting - sitting on the bank of the Guadi ana river with rolling, green hills as a backdrop. In the springtime the countryside is full of wild flowers of all colours - a perfect time for long walks. It is so different from the south coast beach resorts and yet only about half an hour’s drive away.

Property expert Robert Bijker brings us a luxury property in the East Algarve. T he value of a property depends much on its location, quality of materials, specifications and floor space. However, smart homeowners are recognising that double height space can be as much of a luxury as generous square footage. By sacrificing floor space and going vertical, you can create something very special, while at the same time make a statement you have so much space you can afford to do so. This type of property you typically find in the Golden Triangle – Quinta do Lago, Loulé and Vale do Lobo. Having lagged in development versus the central and western Algarve, the east Algarve has only recently been catching up with the construction of luxury residences. Fine properties of this quality and design are few and far between, hence when one comes to the market, it is a real Fromopportunity.themoment you walk through the door, you realise this is an architectural masterpiece. The use of high quality natural materials, glass and generously allocated floor space make you feel comfortable, and in harmony with its beautiful surroundings. The light and bright hallway, with very nice cobblestones and decorative alcoves, leads to a large guest bathroom, study and two indoor gardens; one with decorative pebble stone wall. Left from the entrance is the self contained guest accommodation with separate access and consists of a living room with open plan kitchen, two double bedrooms with en-suite and a spacious office/atelier. Right from the entrance is the large fully equipped kitchen with

3Price – When it comes to price, listen to what the agents say, even if it’s not what you want to hear. If the price is attractive then people can see past the fact that the walls may need painting or new windows need putting in. Don’t worry if your house is located near a road, or you have a 2km drive down a dirt track, if the property looks good and is priced correctly it will sell.
C
c, Sunshine – Arrange for an agent to come at the best possible time of the day, if your garden looks its best first thing in the morning don’t get the agent to come in the afternoon.
4Ready for Sale – It is worth spending a bit of time and money in order to sell faster, however you do not have to spend a fortune, simple things such as decluttering, cleaning windows and touching-up paintwork is often enough. If you have followed these steps and your property is still on the market there is one other thing, keep in contact with your agents. The more they see you and talk to you the more they will keep your property in their minds, keeping you ahead of the game! Does your property stand out from the rest?
2Description – help the agent by discussing what you think are the USP’s (unique selling points) of your property, that way the agent won’t miss any of your property’s unique features.

1Photography – the agents should always take the best possible photographs of your house; help them to make sure that the property is shown in the best way possible. a, Tidy up – de-clutter a room, a potential buyer does not want to be drawn to the pile of old newspapers on the coffee table.
d, New photos. If your not happy with any photos or feel the photos need updating speak to your agent.
b, Choose your photos Ensure your agent doesn’t feature pictures that a potential buyer will not be interested in. Who wants to see a cluttered storeroom?

Buying property in Santa Bárbara and São Brás: a local agent’s view A s one of the oldest real estate agents in Portugal, established for over 20 years, Algarve Homes is located in the pretty country village of Santa Bárbara de Nexe. The business is a small, family run, real estate and villa management agency, that prides itself on simple old fashioned values of honesty, hard work and sound professional advice for both vendor and seller. In a recent interview, Managing Director, Julian Lewis, when asked for his opinion on the current state of the market responded... “We all know that, at this moment in time, selling a property has become more difficult than ever before, partly due to the global credit crunch and the poor sterling/euro exchange rate. Having said that, people are still buying property and continuing to invest in areas where their investment is considered a safe bet. Because of the maturity, attractiveness and, easy access to so many facilities such as the airport, beaches, golf courses, restaurants and, beautiful countryside, property prices in Santa Barbara de Nexe and São Bras do Alportel are, in general, perhaps a little more stable than in other areas of the Algarve. It is true that there are some owners more likely to accept lower offers today, than they would have prepared to do so a year ago. Perhaps due to personal circumstances, they have now decided to accept the money now rather than sit and wait to achieve their previous desired price. Additionally, the euro/pound has never been so strong, so, if the vendors are returning to the UK, they can realistically afford to accept a lower figure. This opens up a new market, allowing many more people the opportunity of investing in a second or primary home in both of these areas. Historically, this market has been dominated by British and Irish buyers, but now, northern Europeans, not affected by the weak pound, are now looking to enjoy the advantages of investing here. I believe that the investment opportunity in the property market in these areas have never been better than right now.”

WHEN TO PLANT Bare Root Roses - An easy and inexpensive option for early season planting. Late winter is the best time to plant bare-root roses. Container Roses - A container rose already has plenty of leaves and maybe some blooms. Early spring is the best time to set out plants grown in nursery containers.
1If you have a bare root plant, soak it in a bucket of water before planting. For roses that are potted, you can water the pot thoroughly and let it sit until ready to plant.
Growing beautiful roses begins with proper rose planting techniques, and requires neither great rose gardening skills, nor experience. The following describes how to get your new rose plant off to a great start.
3 Add a small handful of bonemeal to the planting hole. Spade in some compost or peatmoss to loosen the soil. Mix the soil you took out of the hole with more compost or peat moss. 4Remove the rose from the pot. Carefully place in the hole and shovel the extra soil around the new plant. Plant the rose with the crown slightly deeper than the original soil. The crown or bud union should be about 1 inch under the soil. Gently firm the rose into its new home and water well. Stand back and watch it grow!
PLANTING ROSES STEP-BY-STEP
ROSE CARE To provide care for your roses and ensure you get the most out of your roses, there are a few simple steps you can take to have a beautiful and easy-to-enjoy garden. Water Adequately To assist in rose care, only a select few parts of the country can rely on rainfall to be an adequate source of water for roses. The actual frequency of watering will depend on your soil and climate as well as the age of the plant. Try watering the soil
SELECTING A SITE TO PLANT YOUR ROSES Firstly, choose a sunny area of the garden that gets at least 4 to 5 hours of sun. Do not crowd your rose with other trees and plants. Some roses, such as climbers and shrubs, don’t mind company, but most like to mix with other roses or other non-invasive plants. If you’re replacing an older rose bush, it is important to remove an 18 cubic inch area of soil and replace it with fresh soil. A newly planted rose doesn’t like to grow in the same soil that an older rose bush has been in.

• Old-fashioned roses and climbers that bloom only once a year should be pruned immediately after flowering since they bloom on wood from the previous year's growth. These are the basic guidelines for growing roses successfully and remember that the best plants are those most suited to your environment, which means you can enjoy the beauty of your roses all year round.
• Well-established hybrid teas, floribundas and grandifloras should be pruned early each spring after the winter protection has been removed and just as the buds begin to swell.
• A mixture of baking soda, horticultural oil and water can help control powdery mildew buildup in most rose gardens.
• Neem oil, a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of neem tree, is perhaps one of the most versatile products to manage and eliminate diseases. Neem oil can reduce and control the spread of mildew, black spots and rust while being completely organic Prune to Promote Blooms If you want to maximize rose care, don’t be nervous about pruning - there is no evidence that anyone ever killed a plant with pruning shears! To prune roses you’ll need the following supplies: sharp curvededge pruning shears; long-handled lopping shears, and gardening gloves can help protect you from thorns. Pruning roses controls the size and shape of rose plants. Generous pruning creates bigger plants and eventually more flowers per plant. Selective pruning of top growth can produce bigger, but fewer, blooms. Here are some tips:
•diseases;Sulfur-based fungicides are the best choice to eliminate fungal diseases. However, like Summer Oil, they are not recommended for use in very hot temperature (exceeding 90 degrees).
• Antitranspirants form a thin film of wax, plastic or silicones over the leaves and reflect excessive radiation. Doing so ensures the leaves maintain moisture, and combats fungal growth.

Try to keep water from splashing onto foliage as this can spread diseases. For more information on watering roses, Feed Regularly While cared for roses honored by our Region’s Choice initiative only need fertilizing once a year, most roses appreciate an occasional feeding. The easiest way to remember when to feed your roses, is to think of fertilizer like a reward for the plant: the first feeding should be done when the bush first leafs out. For the remainder of the growing season, fertilize after each flush of blooms, and stop fertilizing about 2 months before christmas. You can use any commercial rose food or general-purpose fertilizer applied according to manufacturer instructions. Scratch dry fertilizers into the soil beneath the leavesavoid touching the canes or bud union - and water well. Mulch Generously Mulch, as an element to rose care, helps minimize weeds, keeps the soil moist and loose, and adds essential nutrients. Organic mulch is best - try wood chips and shavings, shredded bark, pine needles, cottonseed or cocoa-bean hulls, chipped oak leaves or peat nuggets. Apply in the spring just as the soil warms and before weeds start to grow. (It can also be applied anytime during the growing season provided weeds are removed and soil surface is lightly cultivated.) Spread 2 to 4 inches over the rose bed, leaving some space open around the base of each rose. Replace mulch as it deteriorates during the year. How to Manage Insects
There is nothing more burdensome than going through so much hard work, only to discover that irritating bugs have destroyed your roses. To keep those pests at bay, here are a few tips to keep in mind: The use of summer oil, a type of horticulture oil, can control many potential outbreaks such as aphids, spider mites and thrips. However, since it contains traces of nitrogen and sulfur related compounds, it is not recommended for use in high temperature (exceeding 90 degrees.)
Insecticidal soaps are a type of soap that is formulated to contain high insect-killing properties while being harmless to most plants. They are a very useful combatant in eliminating many bugs which plague roses. The cheapest and easiest method to manage insect problems is to use a good, strong spray of water to knock off many of the insects dwelling on your plant. How to Manage Disease In addition to purchasing the right type of rose, or if you are unsure of the type of rose currently in your garden, these tips should help keep you safe from painstaking

Why are we keen on Natural Gas? Well there are two main reasons, one, the sector is very unloved at the moment, and two, the funds pay good dividends, some over 10%. The funds are currently struggling due to the large gas reserves, but we feel that this is well known and should be reflected in the current Weprice.are expecting some kind of correction in the stock markets and perhaps a more unexpected rally in the US$, so we are looking for stocks that have some kind of support. The NatGas funds high dividend yield provides some support, (think of it as a ten percent cushion) and the approaching Winter Season gives us a bit more. As we tell you every month, we are not financial advisors, but we are happy to provide you with some ideas that you may want to float with your financial advisor. I will be asking about Canadian Natural Gas Funds that pay high dividends, or, (just during this unsettled period) I would ask about unleveraged Natural Gas Exchange Traded Funds (ETF). I will study the funds held by the ETF and I may invest directly in one or two funds that are showing strength. Later, I may look for leveraged funds, but only once I feel more at ease with the market. Leveraged funds use derivatives (yes that word that Wall Street has abused so badly) to get two or three times gearing of the stock price. This means that when the fund goes up, the ETF goes up three times as much, but of course if the fund price goes down, it goes down by the same factor. This is a dangerous game, best left to those who spend hours poring over their investments, and definitely not for the faint hearted or those who are investing their nest egg following retirement.

SHOULD owning a great dane make you as much of an eco-outcast as an SUV driver? Yes it should, say Robert and Brenda Vale, two architects who specialise in sustainable living at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. In their new book, Time to Eat the Dog: The real guide to sustainable living, they compare the ecological footprints of a menagerie of popular pets with those of various other lifestyle choices - and the critters do not fare well. As well as guzzling resources, cats and dogs devastate wildlife populations, spread disease and add to pollution. It is time to take eco-stock of our pets. To measure the ecological paw, claw and fin-prints of the family pet, the Vales analysed the ingredients of common brands of pet food. They calculated, for example, that a medium-sized dog would consume 90 grams of meat and 156 grams of cereals daily in its recommended 300-gram portion of dried dog food. At its pre-dried weight, that equates to 450 grams of fresh meat and 260 grams of cereal. That means that over the course of a year, Fido wolfs down about 164 kilograms of meat and 95 kilograms of cereals.

It takes 43.3 square metres of land to generate 1 kilogram of chicken per year - far more for beef and lamb - and 13.4 square metres to generate a kilogram of cereals. So that gives him a footprint of 0.84 hectares. For a big dog such as a German shepherd, the figure is 1.1 Meanwhile, hectaresan SUV - the Vales used a 4.6-litre Toyota Land Cruiser in their comparison - driven a modest 10,000 kilometres a year, uses 55.1 gigajoules, which includes the energy required both to fuel and to build it. One hectare of land can produce approximately 135 gigajoules of energy per year, so the Land Cruiser’s eco-footprint is about 0.41 hectares - less than half that of a medium-sized dog.
Solar installers Penguin, specialists in heating and cooling solutions, are participating in a government scheme which allows home owners in Portugal to obtain significant, no-obligation funding up to 50% towards the purchase and installation of solar hot water heating systems. The scheme, launched by the Portuguese Ministry of Finance earlier this year, is aimed at encouraging the use of renewable energy in homes, specifically the installation of solar systems for hot water heating.
Chris Blackburn stressed that this is a limited opportunity: “This scheme is only available until the end of the year, so we urge those interested Taking the Half-price solar systems governmentthroughscheme.
A grant of €1641,70 is available to home owners applying to the scheme, plus a tax-deductible sum up to Penguin€796.00.director, Chris Blackburn, commented: “This scheme offers an unmissable opportunity for any home owner whose property is suitable for a solar installation. The low purchase cost (almost 50% off depending on the system), when set against typical annual water heating bills, can now offer a return on investment in as little as 1-2 years. After this time, it will provide around 80% of your domestic hot water needs direct from the sun, entirely free.” For a property to be suitable for an effective solar system, it should have a roof, terrace or outside space which can accommodate two panels and which is south-facing, unshaded and unobstructed. The grant is also available to foreign property owners, the only caveat being that they should have a Portuguese bank account and must physically be in Portugal to make the application (i.e. it cannot be made remotely).

T his is not just a long hole but a dangerous one too. If you miss any shot to the right or left, you will find your ball out of bounds all the way from tee to green. Two large bunkers around the green, plus one small bunker at the back to avoid. Most players need 3 good hits to reach the green, the tee shot is uphill. Your second shot must carry over tall trees in the centre of the fairway, your third could be anything from a wood to a pitch depending on how you have played the first two shots. Average golfers will be very happy heading towards the 19th hole if securing par. A great finishing hole with wonderful views of the Serra do Caldeirao. Keith Ashdown, P.G.A. Resident professional

It was the impressive Falcao with two goals & another from skipper Bruno Alves that sunk the brave Algarveans. OLHANENSE SHOCK CUP EXIT Two weeks later and Olhanense suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of non-league Valenciano in the Portugal Millennium Cup (equivalent to the FA Cup). For the small municipality of Valença do Minho, in the far north, this was a day that will live long in their memory. Valenciano are three levels below their illustrious visitors in the pyramid system. With the final score, after extra-time of 1-1, the lottery of a penalty shoot-out saw the home side go through 4-2. Through international calls and injury, Olhanense were missing seven of their squad but can have no complaints after this below do not have access to the other 36 holes available on the resort. For experienced golfers this is a great way to improve your short game, ideal if you don’t have time for a full round of golf. The greens, fairways and tees are maintained to the same high standard of quality as their bigger brother golf courses.

Rumours that Isodoro Sousa, President of SC Olhanense, will be stepping down in December are mere speculation at best. Sousa freely admits that the club’s rise to the top flight has resulted in tremendous pressure. He commented at a recent Board Meeting that he was “worn away” due to the excessive workload not only at the club but with his automotive business that is expanding. Asked to comment last week he said “ I am going to meet with my colleagues and to see, very calmly, which will be the next step. It is very premature to make any assumptions at this stage ”. The 400 fans, who were in Lisbon for the Belenenses’ game, gave Isodoro a rousing reception as he arrived for the game. Once again, in an endeavour to get the big teams through, FIFA seeded the draw with France, Russia, Greece & Portugal guaranteed not to play each other. Portugal meet Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday 14th November in Lisbon, with the return leg away on Wednesday the 18th November. Ireland were first out of the hat and meet France; Can they break a 28-year-winless streak against the French? And what will happen in the first-ever meeting between Portugal and Bosnia Herzegovina? Bosnia-Herzegovina coach, Miroslav Blazevic, has caused a stir by telling his players to kiss each other on the lips. Blazevic, who has Portsmouth star Asmir Begovic in his squad, said: “I take two of my players and tell them, ‘Love him! Kiss him!’ and he kisses him.” He claimed the unorthodox moraleboosting exercise has already proven successful: Mr Blazevic has taken the squad further than ever before in the World Cup.

1 Cut eight 5- by 5-inch squares from heavy wrapping paper. 2 For each square: fold in half to form a triangle, pretty side out; fold in half again. 3 With scissors, cut into the first fold (now folded in half) about 3/4 inch down from the top, stopping about 1/4 inch from the end. Make a similar cut about 3/4 inch down from the first, as shown. 4 Open the square completely, plain side up, and bring up the 2 inside points to form a roll. Tape the points together with doublesided tape. 5 Flip the square over and tape together the middle points. Flip the square over again and tape the outer points. 6 Tape each of the 8 sections together, middle ring of one to outer ring of the next, to form a chain; tape the first and last sections together to form the star. 7 To secure the star, tape the tips together in the center. Punch a hole at the top of one of the points and pass a string through to hang.

Best of all, all of those computer-generated toys scattered across your living room floor will disappear the moment you quit the game. Using augmented reality, which is cameras and computers working together, to superimpose virtual images and information on the real world, the eye pet is a virtual pet that plays around the real world of your living room. With the aid of a PS3 camera, Eye Pet brings a playful, cute monkey-cat creature into your home, where it reacts to your child’s movements and drawings in a natural and immersive manner. Special mention should be made of the superb packaging that helps to build a sense of a real creature coming to visit. A playable tutorial introduces the basic techniques of the game, and shows how to set up the playing area and use the card that the system uses to help put pet food, toys and grooming equipment into your

Pre heat oven to 180c or 350f , grease a 3cm deep baking tray with margerine. Add the pot of yoghurt to a bowl, use the empty pot to measure the oil, sugar and flour into the bowl, add the eggs and baking powder, stir well to make a smooth mixture and pour into the baking tray, place in the oven for 20 minutes. Check it is cooked by putting a knife into the centre, which if the cake is ready, should come out clean, allow to cool, cut up and enjoy. Please make sure you have an adult to help you.
