EdITOR Katie
After an unbelievably warm and sunny October, Autumn is well and truly upon us. I've heard many people talking about wood deliveries, keeping it dry etc, which brings back memories of last winter, damp wood, smoky rooms and mold. Well, enough of the negative stuff, this month we meet the owners of Casa da Calma bed and breakfast and Santa Luzia restaurant Casa do Polvo. We have several delicious international dishes from Quinta Fonte do Bispo's new winter menu on our regular food page, more golfing tips from Keith Ashdown, properties, we focus on olive processing and visit a local factory and museum, finance, environment and much more. I hope you enjoy the November issue, whether your reading it by a cosy log fire or in the Autumn sunshine. continue to send in your comments or thank you. Bassett Bassett

Australian woman’s death in São Brás de Alportel questioned by family Jacinta rees, an australian woman who was found dead at her home in são brás de alportel in march 2008 case has been reopened. her family are claiming that she was murdered despite Portuguese police ruling that she had committed suicide. the police stated "there were traces of blood found at the house, however there is no suspicion of murder.” the Gnr spokesman continued: “the PJ police investigated the property and did not find any evidence of robbery or any other acrime.”few days before her death, Jacinta had been involved in a car accident and allegedly could have been "psychologically impaired". an australian newspaper reported that a new autopsy by australian authorities concluded that Jacinta rees died from a “blunt force injury to the left side of the head. the injury pattern with trauma to both head and the left arm raises serious concerns. Further investigations are being undertaken via the victorian Police department’s homicide squad.” the family are apparently dissappointed with the Federal Government of australia. Jacintas brother stated “all we want to know is the truth about what happened to her. she was our sister and our parents’ child –she deserves better than this.” he also added: “the Portuguese police have said that she died from a self inflicted wound and there were no signs of attack or defence but Jacinta’s skull had been caved in with an axe. she clearly had defensive wounds". “the australian embassy in lisbon has been actively engaged in assisting ms rees’ family and the investigating officials. the ambassador met with, and wrote to, senior officials in the Portuguese ministry of Foreign affairs and Public Prosecutor’s Office about the case. the australian department of Foreign affairs and trade obtained a copy of the autopsy report from the victorian coroner and provided this to the Portuguese investigators. “the findings of the report were examined and taken into account by the Portuguese Prosecutor. embassy officials followed up enquiries with the investigating officials and the Prosecutor’s office on more than 20 separate occasions, including following up on the findings of the victorian coroner.”

Illegal dumping of waste material in a landfill site inside the limits of Olhao’s riverside park in the ria Formosa could cost Olhao tax payers between euro 7,500 - 44,000 according to the regional development commission (ccdr). Olhao town hall was served with a formal complaint for dumping waste in Olhao’s western landfill site in december 2009. the town hall has since removed all of the waste material, placed barriers preventing access to the site and further illegal dumping and has also retreated the front of the landfill by three metres. ccdr report that a meeting is due to take place next week between the commission and the town hall to set a date for the resolution of the problem, which will only be fully resolved with the ria Formosa Polis programme starting in 2011 and which includes the refurbishment of run down areas along the western part of Olhao’s riverside area, west of the port. “the size of the fine will depend on the outcome of the meeting and the plan to resolve the problem,” said a spokesman.

Painted using a representational style and subtle colours, they capture private moments of people at home. the artist enters their bathrooms and bedrooms often finding them partly dressed, absorbed in daily routine. it is the candid relationships that exist between leclaire and her subjects, which enable her to successfully emulate real life. as a result, peering into these small paintings is almost Onvoyeuristic.thereverse of each, a series of handwritten notes give insight into leclaire’s thoughts and feelings. she challenges her own motivation and expresses her concerns – some are trivial, others are deep – but like the paintings, they are revealing. born in Florida in 1980, she is following a distinguished career. she currently lives and works in Philadelphia where she is artist-inresidence at the prestigious roger laPelle Gallery. Oh dear! Whatever happened to Tiny Tim, the crippled, youngest child of the Cratchit family? And where are the other Cratchit children this Christmas? Find out why Mr. and Mrs. Cratchit are dining alone in this new version of the old Dickens favourite, A Christmas Carol. Multi-lingual Aperitivo theatre group have written a new script set in the depression years of the 1930s. Always funny, the humour is blacker in parts than the original and the fantasy even wilder. Audiences at the Museum in São Brás, home of Aperitivo, have come to expect the unexpected from the innovative theatre group, whose richly talented members include singers, musicians, artists and writers

New venues for Aperitivos
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cratchit, played by Roger Legg and Jane Page, in Aperitivo Performance Group’s production of Bah Humbug! of six nationalities, and this year the team will take the production to new venues at both ends of the Algarve. As well as performing on the 10th and 11th December at the Museum in São Brás, Bah Humbug! will be shown at a dinner theatre presentation at the Holiday Inn Algarve at Armação de Pera on the 15th December, and at the al-Masrah theatre in Tavira on the 17th December. The ‘fringe’ type al-Masrah theatre is a new location for Aperitivo. Perfectly located in the centre of Tavira, just across from the Cine-Teatro, it is a small, intimate venue ideal for this sort of production. Tiered, bench seating (bring a cushion!) means that all the audience will get a great view of the performance and feel really part of the Christmas spirit. So - as Tiny Tim always used to say – God Bless Us All, Each and Every One!

Following my article in the October edition, I was contacted by Vera Sousa who runs a Clinical Pilates class in Moncarapacho. Iwent along to watch a class and report on how this gentle form of exercise not only strengthens your inner core, but in doing so, is an excellent way to prevent your aches and pains. The exercises can be tailored to suit your specific restrictions or weakness. Details of when and where the classes are held can be found at the end of this article. The after class ‘glass of wine and chips’ is not compulsory but makes for a very sociable end to a very enjoyable class!! So wHAt iS PiLAteS? Pilates is an innovative system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates. Pilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen. It teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. Pilates improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can even help alleviate Professionalpain.dancers have known the benefits of Pilates for decades. Top athletes use it for strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. Hollywood celebrities and supermodels use it to maintain beautiful physiques. A miracle? Not really. Developed from the rehabilitation techniques of Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise system using a floor mat or equipment, that will help you look and feel your very best. No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you. Pilates gets your mind in tune with your body by emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and complete concentration on smooth, flowing movement. You become acutely aware of how your body feels, where it is in space, and how to control its movement. The quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. Proper breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency. Pilates exercises develop a strong "core," or centre of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Control of the core is achieved by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle. The Pilates exercises are based on 8 principles: Breathing. Respiration is very important in Pilates and should happen in synchrony with the exercise. Exhalation should happen when the person does the movement in the routine. Focus Pilates works with the mind as well as the body. The mind needs to be focussed at all times. Concentration is very important to promote the correct alignment and conscience of the body. Control. The control of the movement is elementary when we work against gravity. Core. In Pilates the core of the body is the “power house”. The core is composed of deep abdominal muscles, deep spinal muscles and the pelvic floor muscles. Precision. Precision of movement is the long term aim in Pilates. The regular practice of the technique creates more precision which brings more conscience and control. Fluidity. All Pilate’s movements should be done with fluid movements. isolation. In Pilates, with practice, we develop a better conscience of our body and

T his stunning retreat is owned and managed by Nicole Effenberg. Originally from Frankfurt, Nicole settled here twenty years ago. Her dream since childhood was to have "her own little place to receive clients from all over the world". She began her career as an apprentice in Hotel Management after leaving school. Nicole worked her way up through the ranks and has been in charge of 120 staff, worked in top hotels and five star resorts, and eventually becoming VIP PA in the resort Vila Vita Parc. Nicole is fluent in many languages, German, English, Portuguese and many more. She found her dream property in 2001, Casa da Calma, a 7 bedroom bed and breakfast in a tranquil setting near Moncarapacho in the East Algarve. With help from her mother and sister, the dream became reality. Originaly an old farmhouse, Nicole worked very hard to transform it, with much renovation and refurbishing to tackle by herself. The name came from the simple tranquility that surrounded the place, literally the meaning is house of calm. Casa da Calma is undoubtedly a peaceful retreat. Nicole makes sure guest want for nothing. The 7 rooms are fully equipped with bath robes, satelite T.V., hairdryers and much more. Breakfast is buffet style, with fresh local produce. There is a lovely heated pool, a terrace area for sun worshippers and the exceptional gardens to explore (the total land area is 1.3 hectares). Nicole also provides a sauna, childrens play area and a well stocked honesty bar in the stylish dining room. Snacks and evening meals are prepared upon request. You may recognise Nicole from our feature on Eduardo and the Restaurant Casa do PolvoTasquiha. Nicole has found love, and has her hands more than full helping out at the restaurant, therefore decided that it's time to let someone else enjoy Casa da Calma. A fully operational and licensed rural B&B, Nicole is selling Casa da Calma as a going concern. If you are interested in buying Casa da Calma, and would like to arrange a visit, call 966 978 937 for an appointment.

Focus on olive processing
Photographs by Richard Bassett
Olives mature on the tree and can be harvested for green table olives when the fruit is immature or left on the tree to ripen. The ripe olives are also harvested for processing as food but are left on the trees still longer if they are to be used for oil. Six to eight months after the flowers bloomed, the fruit will reach its greatest weight; and 20-30% of that weight (excluding the pit) is oil. I was intrigued by the oil processing, walking past the Sta Catarina co op every day, my nosiness got the better of me and I went to investigate. Not having the best portuguese vocabulary, I stumbled around the factory like a complete tourist. Anyone can visit the co-op factory and museum with an appointment, they will show you the 75 year old machinery and there are information boards in English to explain the age old process. Locally, olives are harvested by hand, sheets of netting or plastic are placed on the ground under the trees, and the harvesters climb ladders and comb the fruit from the branches. Long-handled rakes made of wood or plastic are used to pull the olives from the tree. There are other methods of harvesting including striking the branches with long canes or using shaped animal horns as combs to scrape the fruit from the branches. Pickers who use their fingers only employ a milking motion to strip the fruit from the trees. Hand picking is preferred by most growers. After harvesting of a tree's crop is completed, the nets filled with olives are emptied into baskets or crates, which are then transported to the processing plant. At the processing plant, the harvest bags are emptied into 1,000 lb (450 kg) bins and then deposited onto conveyors, past a blower that blasts leaves and tree and dirt particles off the fruit. They are washed in

pure water and placed in 55 gal (2001) barrels. For brine curing of green olives, 12-14% salt and water are added to the barrels filled with olives. One cup of live active brine is added to each barrel; the live active solution is previously used brine that contains airborne yeasts and sugars from the olives that fermented in the brine. The active ingredient transfers enough yeast to begin the curing process in the new batch of brine. If salt and water alone were added to the olives, fermentation (curing) would not begin on its own, so the live active brine is a starter.
olive processing
Almonds, pearl onions, sliced pimentos, mushrooms, anchovies, and pimento paste are the most common olive accessories. The key to the flavor, color, and texture of the olive is the moment of harvest. The fruit can be harvested when it is green and unripe, fully ripened to black or any stage in between. Older fruit can be salt-cured or dry cured to produce a salty, wrinkled product. Damaged fruit can still be used by pressing it into oil. It is the combination of the harvest, the cure, and any added flavors that yield the characteristics sought by the producer and consumer. Lye treatment is done to remove the bitterness of the olive. Olives contain oleuropein (after their botanical name Olea europea), and it is this substance (a compound called a glucoside) that makes them too bitter to eat directly from the tree. Curing with lye softens the olive so it can be picked when it is still hard, but olives to be naturally cured must be more ripe, handled carefully, and processed quickly.
In order to produce edible olives, harvested olives are cleaned and then cured in a natural brine of salt, oil, and flavorings or artificially with lye. Taste of the final product depends upon variety, time of harvest, and curing solution.
Pagewww.eastalgarvemag.com
The next step consists in separating the oil from the rest of the olive components. This used to be done with presses (hence the now somewhat obsolete terms first press and cold press), but is now done by centrifugation, except in old facilities. Some centrifuges are called three-phase because they separate the oil, the water, and the solids separately. The two-phase centrifuges separate the oil from a wet paste. In most cases, the oil coming out of the first centrifuge is further processed to eliminate any remaining water and solids by a second centrifuge that rotates faster. The oil is then left in tanks or barrels where a final separation, if needed, happens through gravity. This is called racking the oil. Finally the oil can be filtered, if desired. Depending on the curing method, pure water, caustic soda or lye, and coarse salt are used. Flavorings can be added to the brine. Among the favorites are red pepper or a variety of Mediterranean herbs for black olives and lemon or hot green peppers or chilies for green olives. Fennel, wine vinegar, or garlic can be used to add interest to any olive, but the time required for the olives to take on these flavors can range from a week for whole chilies to several months for a more subtle taste like the herb fennel. Pitted green olives can be stuffed to add color, flavor, and texture.

T he past two years have not been good for real estate in the Algarve, resulting in lower prices and transaction rates falling sharply. It is likely the market will remain weak going well into next year. For a sustainable recovery we need a stronger, broad based economic recovery which is unlikely to happen as we are in the midst of a massive deleveraging cycle where households, corporations and governments are reducing spending and selling assets to repay debt. Talks of new rounds of quantitative easing (QE) in the USA and UK indicate that these economies are not out of the woods yet. More QE increases currency volatility and uncertainty, but both governments don’t seem to mind having a weak currency. A competitive devaluation helps exports. As a buyer from the UK looking to purchase a property abroad, you may be less than pleased by this action. With the exception of strong economic growth in Germany, elsewhere in the euro zone the recovery is weak. Many governments have announced austerity measures to reduce budget deficits. This will be gradually implemented in the next three to four years. Most plans are ambitious but necessary in order to avoid increasing debt servicing cost when interest rates move back up again in the future and includes tax increases, reduced government spending and job losses in the public sector. In times of job insecurity, underfunded pensions and the unknown effect of the austerity measures on disposable income, people tend to postpone the purchase of durable goods if possible. The feel good factor is simply not there. This is also having an effect on peoples decision - not

Page 19 desire - to purchase a place in the sun, regardless of whether they are a cash buyer or not. The austerity measures, when implemented, will at best be a drain on economic growth for 2011 and at worst throw some economies (Portugal) back into recession. A strong property market can only return when unemployment numbers fall, consumer confidence increases and the European economy starts growing again. In light of the above, a recovery of the property market looks unlikely in the near However, term. the continued weakness is a benefit for buyers who postponed their purchase. There are still distressed sellers out there - but fewer than a year ago - mainly consisting of new properties from developers and to a lesser extent resales from individual owners. Prices are much lower than three years ago and there are many bargains offering good returns. As an owner, what can you do to improve your chances of selling your house? Make sure your property is attractively priced and presented at its best. Instead of waiting for spring, now is the time to clean the house thoroughly and get rid of all clutter. This may just prove to be the edge you need to sell your home. For more tips to improve your chances of selling your property, please contact us. How Succulentsgrowto Eastalgarve_Issue23.indd 31 02/11/2010 14:49
When you start playing with plants for your garden you have a refreshing alteration of scale, focusing on individual leaves as opposed to vast sweeps of a border. It is light work, intricate and absorbing, yet it can have equally high-octane impact. Succulent plants, with their plump, waterretaining leaves and stems, are often quite chubby compared to many species, yet close inspection can reveal that they look delicate and exotic. Many are ideal to adorn your Succulentsgarden. are a large, diverse group and what counts is somewhat debatable. Debatable succulents include halophytes (plants that grow in salt marshes), bulbs (many people consider a few bulbs such as Bowia and Heamanthus to be succulents), Welwitchia (a weird cone baring plant all the other generally accepted succulents are flowering plants) and even some cacti. Even if you exclude all these, you're left with a huge range: rain forest epiphytes (e.g. Hoya and Schlumbergera), alpines from the mountains of Europe, cacti from Canada and Patagonia, not to mention all those succulents from deserts and semideserts in fairly warm to very hot Forclimates.thepurposes of this article, I'll just consider the warmer climate desert plants that are grown as houseplants in cooler climates. Even and sometimes plants with very different cultural requirements are included in the same genus (e.g. Euphorbia and Mammillaria). (Most the succulent bulbs will grow well if treated like this.) Light: Most plants (including succulents) are basically solar powered and succulents like more light than most. They'll do best on a south-facing wall (north-facing in the southern hemisphere). Although succulents do well outside all year here you must keep an eye on your plants, as succulents can be burnt by too much light and heat but this rather depends on the type and where you live. Also plants can aclimatetize to some extent. Heat: Many succulents will tolerate (if not prefer) to have a cool winter period when they only have protection from frost (many will tolerate some frost). However there are others that need to be kept above 10 degrees C. If you have a greenhouse, you may like to concentrate on the kinds that tolerate cooler conditions (they include most the small round cacti that have nice Gardeners spend a lot of time looking at the overall picture, and by way of a change it's good to get down and examine plants at really close quarters.
Page 31www.eastalgarvemag.com Gardens

Page 32 www.eastalgarvemag.com Gardens flowers, some large cacti, most Opuntias, most Crassulaceae, Aloes, Agaves, some Euphorbias and all Messembrianthemums). If you're growing your succulents somewhere that stays hot all the time, you should stick to the more tropical kinds: Melocactus, many large cacti, some Euphorbias, stapeliads, Kalanchoes, Pachypodiums etc. although you can probably get away with some of the more tolerant types like Aloes. Water: This is complicated. Most books advise to water about once a week from spring to autumn and not at all in the winter. This is fine if you're keeping them cool in the winter, and don't have winter growing types. If you're keeping them warm all year, you really need to water all year, but probably a bit less in the winter. Winter growing kinds will need watering about once every 2 to 4 weeks in the winter. You really have to learn to tell when things are looking thirsty. The stemless Messembrianthemums are very fussy about when they get watered and they're all different! Fertilizer: Accepted wisdom says that succulents like low nitrogen fertilizer. However I think balanced fertilizer (with trace elements) is perfectly OK. Compost: Succulents will grow well in wide range of composts. Many people use peat based compost. Others use inorganic compost composed of things like pumice, perlite and sand. I mostly use a perlitebased compost and the only things I've found it doesn't work for are Bulbines. Anacampseros and, more so, Avonia like loam based compost. Pots: Old books recommend clay pots but plastic works just fine. Don't put plants in pots smaller than about 5cm as this will really dwarf the plants. If you're going to put multiple plants in the same container, make sure they like similar conditions and grow at about the same speed. Don't mix winter and summer growing plants or cacti and Crassulaceae (the latter take over) and don't mix stemless Messembrianthemums with anything.
Pests and diseases: Again complicated as pests keep evolving immunity and the availability of insecticides keeps changing. The main problems are: Mealy bugs (white fuzzy things that look a bit like small woodlice), root mealy bugs (similar but live in the soil), red spider mites (very small, cause brown scarring) and various types of rot. Many people use systemic insecticides and fungicides every year or so but crassulaceae really don't like systemic insecticides or Malathion. Red spider mites don't like being sprayed with water. I use bulb powder in the compost to prevent fungus and root mealy bugs. If you can put your plants outside or let them get cold in the winter, it will help keep the pests down. If you have a plant that dies at the base, you can often chop off the dead and dying bits and get what's left to take root. You may also be able to graft the top bit. Some more easily grown succulents (good to start with): Aeonium, Agave, Aloe, Apteranthus, Beaucarnia, Carpobotros, Cereus, Crassula, Dracena, Delosperma, Echeveria, Echinopsis (now includes Lobivia, Trichocereus etc.), Euphorbia (some, remember there are tropical and cooler climate species), Gasteria, climate),grownclimateclimateRebutia,Pachyphytum,Notocactus, gracilisspeciesLithops,Kalanchoe,Gymnocalycium,Graptopetalum,Haworthia,Lampranthus,Mammillaria(easyinclude:boccasana, andprolifera),Opuntia,Plectranthus,Sedum(warmerkindsthecoldtypesshouldbeinthegardeninacoldSenecio.

The Burning question
your
you
o if you burn wood for heating in the autumn and winter then it’s high time that have it a place to store it With this in mind a few thoughts on how to get the maximum heating benefit from burning wood to keep home warm this year. Moisture content: The moisture contained in wood has by far the great est effect on its calorific value or capacity for heating when burnt. Green or freshly felled wood can contain between 60% to 70% moisture, so that more than half of the woods volume has to boil away before the wood will burn properly, this drastically reduces the energy re leased as useful heat as opposed to steam going up the Lightingchimney.logs that aren’t dry will result in a fire that smoul der’s and creates lots of tars and smoke (if they light at all) and will blacken the glass of your wood stove or clog up the chimney flue with black sticky tar like soot. These tars can be corrosive, potentially damaging the lining of the flue and increasing the danger of a chimney fire as the tar is highly combustible, being unburned fuel released from the wood when it was cooked at low tem perature due to the cooling effect of the water content evaporating. Wood Storage: Dry, well seasoned wood gives us the best heat output but how do we achieve this seemingly simple task? The remedy for good, dry wood storage is simple! Store it up off the ground such that moisture cannot be drawn up from the surface below, ideally in some form of frame work with open ventilated bottom, sides, front and back
The summer has now slipped by and the nights are becoming colder with the mornings misty and damp with dew and reluctantly our thoughts turn to getting the heating working again.

Burning logs can be attractive and cosy but are a very inefficient method of heating even if correctly installed! Uncontrolled air flow takes hot air from the fire up the chimney, plus it draws heated air in from the rest of the house too, this is replaced with cold, outdoor air drawn in to the house through vents and drafts. Open fires run at very low efficiencies of 25% or worse, resulting in large amounts of smoke and ash for very little useful heat output. Even when not in use the chim ney acts like a big vent that allows large amounts of cold air into the room, as it replaces the warm air rising up the chimney. Remember too, that open fires need a fine mesh spark guard to prevent fire damage to surround ing soft furnishings and rugs. Closed high efficiency wood burning stoves are also attractive and cosy but are a super efficient method of heating! Controlled air flow takes small amounts of air from the room and uses it to burn the wood in a highly efficient manner, even burning the smoke to maximise heat Theseoutput!fires, that can run at very high efficiencies ap proaching 90%+ depending upon design, result in large amounts of heat output, small amounts of ash produced and dramatically reduced fuel consumption. When not in use the stove does not act like a big vent so the heat in the room is not lost and with their glass doors do not need a fine mesh spark guard. However! It is important to note that if young chil dren or invalids are present some form of protective fire guard should be used, as the glass will reach very high temperatures when in use!
The most commonly burned wood types in the Algarve are Olive, Almond and varieties of oak imported from the north. But remember! – all wood burns and produc es heat, so even woods like pine and eucalyptus can be burned without problems as long as it is very well seasoned for 3 to 4 years minimum. Their heat output is lower however but it is heat all the same! Fire Opentypes:fires.
For wood burners, pellet stoves, pellets and chimney sweeping Call Gavin in Tavira Tel. 281 326 551 and with a rain proof cover over the top. In this form, air can circulate through and around the wood ensuring that we burn the driest wood possible and maximise the heat gained from our expenditure. Most importantly – we should ensure that our wood store is stoutly constructed and able to maintain a sup ply of dry wood ready for our use without collapsing upon us in use causing potentially serious injuries. The picture shows a good example of an outdoor free stand ing wood store, that meets all the requirements outlined and in addition is simple to construct.

Fire operation: One simple rule applies! – Burn dry wood and run it hot – this ensures that all combustibles & smoke are burned and maximises efficiency and heat output. Do not! Bank up the fire overnight and burn at a low rate – this causes extensive smoke production and low heat output with resultant chimney sooting, tarring and characteristic blackened door glass.

The state pension could be increased to about £140 a week under Government plans to ensure everybody has a "decent" income in retirement. Ministers are drawing up plans to sweep away the means-tested system and introduce a new flatrate pension worth considerably more than at present. The basic state pension is currently £97.65 for a single person and £156.15 for a couple. Means-tested top-ups for the poorest ensure single pensioners have an income of at least £132.60 and couples get £202.40.

In early September the pound was sitting quite nicely at the 1.20s level and many people thought we would see it continue to move higher perhaps to 1.30. However, we have seen a steady drift down and now we have to try and work out where Sterling will be by the year Theend. UK economy has stuttered of late. Such common indicators such as house prices have been poor and many professional commentators feel the UK has the possibility of returning to recession. This would not be good for the pound. The budget deficit is very large in the UK and the Government are bringing in massive spending cuts to try and bring this deficit back to reasonable levels. This could again weigh heavily on the economy and will affect the value of Sterling as perspective investors will not be confident in the state of the UK economy. It is therefore important to plan your currency purchases carefully. It may be advisable to explore the possibility of a forward contract. This is where you purchase your currency at a rate for a future date and alleviate the problem of fluctuating exchange rates. This can be useful if you are buying a property and need to pay in stages. The same can be said if you need to make regular payments such as transferring over a UK pension or funds to meet mortgage Exchangerepayments.rates fluctuate and can be volatile, don’t get caught out with these movements, it will ultimately cost you money!
Scrapping the complicated and expensive system is expected to save enough money from reduced bureaucracy to pay for the £140-a-week pension. The move would benefit everybody in retirement, including the better off. But it would be a particular boost for women, many of whom lose out on the state pension after taking time out of work - and national insurance contributions - to bring up children.

Ministers hope to implement the new system before the next general election, scheduled for 2015. It is being worked out by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith and Pensions Minister Steve Webb. A Green Paper is to be published later this year. Business Secretary Vince Cable said today "It's to make sure people can look forward in retirement to a good state pension without means testing. We need something people can rely on. What he's proposing is very radical. It will take time to introduce." A new "single tier" pension of £140 a week would give an income of £7,280 per year or £14,560 for a pensioner couple. The new system would probably be based on residency in Britain and not on National Insurance Acontributions.spokeswoman for the Department of Work and Pensions said: "The Chancellor has confirmed that the Government will improve the quality and accessibility of pensions in the Spending Review period. "We will be bringing forward proposals for reform in a Green Paper later this year. "Our aim will be a simple, decent state pension for future pensioners, which is easy to understand, efficient to deliver and affordable." By Tim Moynihan, PA, the Independent.

Aplayer with a perfect style and the wrong temperament will often be beaten by a player with less golfing ability, yet the right temperament. So try anything as you go round that will prevent tension creeping in. Concentrate on each individual shot, but in between shots relax your mind and remember that most faults are only a matter of timing. If you cannot improve your shots by slowing down your swing, consult your PGA Professional, he will soon put you right. If you find a bad lie do not worry. Look at a spot at the back of the ball and hit down and through it.

Pyschologists say that you cannot concentrate on any subject for more than four seconds, so when addressing the ball, don't stare at it too long, just give one or two waggles, then hit it. It's rather like rifle shooting, if you look through the sights too long, you have to put the rifle down for a while, then start Ifagain.you are held up in your game, just sit down and relax your mind and muscles, admire nature, the beauty of the leaves changing colour, a lovely sunset. If you are fond of birds (feathered ones), name as many as you can. Ladies, talk about your new hat, shopping or housework, it all helps to stop tension from creeping in. Of course, a lot depends on your temperament, if you are one of those who rush at everything in life, you will probably swing too quickly, but if you can, slow down a little at the top of the swing, you should play much better golf. If you are taking part in atheletics, it helps to be keyed up and eager to get off, but with golf you must take it calmly and quietly and start off in a tranquil frame of mind (if you can). Remember, temperament and rhythm is the secret of golf. Good Golfing. Keith

V.Setubal & Olhanense fans, of all ages, get together

OLHANENSE SPOT ON The 3rd Round of the Portugal Cup can often be the graveyard for Premier teams as they battle with lower league teams. Nowhere was this more obvious than at the small picturesque town of Serta in the Castelo Branco region as lowly non-league Sertanense took on high flying Olhanense The playing surface was atrocious which didn't suite the more skillful Olhanense athletes who soon realised the long ball game was the only way to play. 0-0 after ninety minutes and in extra-time both sides seemed content to see the decision go to penalties. Djalmir, Cadu, João Gonçlaves and Lulinha all scored to give the Algarve a 4-1 advantage. Olhanense will now meet fellow Premier League team Nacional (Madeira) at home in the 4th round to be played on the weekend of the 21st/22nd November.

LOOSE BOOT SINKS OLHANENSE Two hundred fans tackled the 600kms journey to Braga in the far north to watch Olhanense take on Sporting Braga at the impressive AXA Stadium. Braga’s UEFA Champions League results this season - impressive wins over Celtic (Scotland), Sevilha (Spain) & Partizan (Serbia) but defeats to Arsenal & Shaktar (Ukraine) - are testimony to the team’s pedigree. Braga, who owe their Sporting Club tag to the better known Sporting Lisbon, changed their kits from green-and-white hoops to their Arsenal-style red in 1920 when their then-coach József Szabó, following a trip to England and Highbury, ordered the club to adopt new colours to establish their own identity. Braga even renamed their youth team Arsenal do Braga. Olhanense, with ever mounting injury problems, were under constant pressure from ‘os arsenalistas’ but All the latest soccer news from Chris Wright.
Portuguese football press speculation that the Algarve’s top football team could be heading for European qualification is certainly premature but under the astute stewardship of manager Daúto Faquirá anything is possible. October started with an impressive 3-1 victory over V.Setúbal that put Olhanense on twelve points and moved them in to third place behind Porto and Benfica. Goals from Mauricio, João Gonçlaves and Jardel meant that Olhanense had scored seven times in the league this season with seven different names on the score sheet! There is a great bond of friendship between Setúbal & Olhão as in the past both fishing communities relied heavily on the sardine industry. Over 500 fans made the journey south as supporters of both clubs joined together to enjoy a festive feast of food, drink and music in front of the new Olhão Marina. V.Setúbal’s official supporters' association is known as VIII Exército. In 1943, on the occasion of the club’s first Portugal Cup Final, thousands of people from Setúbal invaded Lisbon and, although defeated 5-1 by Benfica, celebrated in a demonstration of fair play. The press nicknamed the fans 8º Exército (the 8th Army) because of their massive following of the team. The papers compared it with the British Eighth Army troops flooding into Africa for their World War II campaign.

www.eastalgarvemag.com Page 45 Sport with five minutes of the first-half remaining the visitors surprisingly went in front. A free-kick out on the left was whipped in by Paulo Sérgio and centre-back Mauricio rose above the Braga defence to head the ball home. The home side came out for the second period firing on all cylinders and within ten minutes had scored twice through Mossoro & Lima. Chaos ensued on the hour when Jardel lost his boot whilst making a goal line clearance with the keeper well beaten. The referee awarded Braga an indirect free-kick six metres from goal, technically correct but certainly not within the spirit of the law. Elderson rolled the ball to Lima who smashed home his second goal to put the result (3-1) beyond doubt. The forty-seven ‘Os Gorilas’ supporters, who made the journey, stayed at Hotel de Lago in the beautiful surrounding of the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary high above the city of Braga. The Sanctuary is a notable example of a pilgrimage site with a monumental, Baroque stairway that climbs 116 metres (381 feet). In 1629 a pilgrimage church was built dedicated to the Bom Jesus (Good Jesus), with six chapels which are decorated with terra cotta sculptures depicting the Passion of Christ. A further attraction is the funicular which was built in 1882 and is the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula as well as being the oldest funicular in the world to operate by water counterbalancing. Water is pumped into the carriage at the top of the hill, which weighs it down so it sinks to the bottom, at the same time drawing the lighter, drained carriage up the hill, where the process starts all over again. The track, with its steep gradient, is 274 metres long, descends 116 metres and was originally used to help pilgrims reach the site.

The Faro team’s long trip to Braga for their Portugal Cup 3rd round tie with Merelinense turned in to an explosive encounter. Three players were dismissed, including Farense substitute Bruno Carvalho before he had even got on the pitch, and ten yellow cards shown by referee Pedro Vilaça. Farense lost 2-1 with all three goals coming from the penalty spot. Louletano (Loule) lost 2-1 to lower league opponents Bombarralense although this match is under investigation by the Portuguese FA and could result in Louletano being reinstated. fEAST Of fOOTBALL The José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão (behind McDonalds on the EN125) hosts three games in November: Wednesday 10th - OLIVEIRENSE kick-off 4.00pm League Cup 2nd Sundayphase 14th - BEIRA-MAR kick-off 4.00pm Premier Liga Sat/Sun 20th/21st - NACIONAL Portugal Cup 4th round. Wrinklies' Wit and Wisdom Eastalgarve_Issue23.indd 46 02/11/2010 14:50
This is a hardback book of humorous quotes from people as diverse as Shakespeare to Victor Meldrew, about getting on a bit. None of the contributors are past their "amuse by date", instead they are a great advert for a good attitude to old age. If the name Rosemarie Jarski sounds familiar to you, the author has also collected together other quotes which have been published as Great British Wit and The Funniest Thing You Never Said. In the introduction to the book Rosemarie shows her own wit and wisdom. She says, "Any society that doesn't value its older citizens, is off it's rocker. We're all getting older so ageism is like turkeys voting for Christmas." Wrinklies' Wit and Wisdom is dedicated to her mum. What a good and lucky mum she must be to have a daughter whose thoughts about older relatives are more like those of cultures who value their aged members more than ours generally does. I would like to think that the young would find enjoyment and enlightenment in this book, as well as wrinklies laughing at others similar to them. Here are some quotes from the book; "Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't "Whenmatter."I turned 2 I was really anxious, because I had doubled my age in a year. I thought if this keeps up, by the time I'm 6 I'll be 90." "I can lie convincingly about my age, because at my age, I can't always remember what it is." "There are three ages of man: he believes in Santa Claus; he doesn't believe in Santa Claus; he is Santa "IClaus."contemplated buying a cream that stopped the 7 signs of ageing, and wondered what they might be. Incontinence? Talking about the weather? Wearing slippers? Memory loss? Compulsive need to queue up at the Post Office? Memory loss? Inability to comprehend the lyrics of a pop song?" "Old age is when your wife says, "Let's go upstairs and make love," and you answer, "Honey I can't do both." "Mick Jagger told me the wrinkles on his face were laughter lines, but nothing is that funny." "I don't eat health foods, at my age I need all the preservatives I can get." "I'm on a new diet of Viagra and prune juice - I don't know if I'm coming or going." Beware of giving this book to someone who is sensitive about the inevitable end for us all though. I thought the quote, "Don't take life too seriously. It isn't permanent" very amusing, but it may not be seen as such by someone who has recently been bereaved. I will leave you with a comforting quote that I liked, "The plaster and paint may be peeling and cracking on the outside, but that doesn't matter if the rooms inside are cosy."
