Portugal’s Non-Habitual Resident regime. A decade of generous tax breaks. Are you planning on moving to Portugal or have recently arrived? The ‘NHR’ regime can provide significant tax advantages for your first 10 years of residence, such as tax-free foreign income, including most UK pensions if planned correctly. It also offers a reduced tax rate for income from ‘high value’ professions. We have been advising UK nationals on effective tax planning in Portugal for decades. Our local advisers can talk you through your options and provide personalised wealth management solutions to help you get the most out of living in Portugal.

Welcome... ... your November issue. This month we visit the wonderful restaurant Tia Ana in Faro which is organically certified and where we were lucky enough to sample a selection of their delicious dishes. Quinta Do Vale Golf Resort has appointed a new green keeper, Joaquim Soares who kindly took time to explain to us how how he has improved their greens in just six months. As we are in olive picking season, we visit Lagar in Santa Catarina, a family business since 1912, where you can still bring your home grown olives which they will process into olive oil for you. We hope you enjoy this issue and please feel free to send us any comments or suggestions. I would like to personally thank friends of the magazine for their continued support as our families adjust to our tremendous loss.

News Loulé Mines open doors for tourist visits for the first time since 2009

Source: www.algarvedailynews.com

F

ollowing the departure of the “Allgarve” program, which ran in both 2008 and 2009, the Loulé Rock-Salt Mines have limited their visits exclusively to academics in recent years, opening their doors only to schools, universities and the Live Science Program which runs in the summer. However, a large-scale project is currently in the works, involving the revitalization of this space for tourism purposes. The Loulé Rock-Salt Mines are expecting to open their doors to the general public as soon as this month, all interested parties will be able to spend 2 hours in the mine to discover the extraordinary world of the underground rock-salt caves. This location will be of interest to tourists and residents alike, as it will be the only Portuguese mine which is below sea level that can be visited by the public. With its opening, all visitors will be able to uncover the history of the space, located 230 metres deep, and admire geological formations 230 million years old. For this purpose, an interpretation

route about 1.3 km long has been created. With the help of expert guides, all visitors are invited to learn about the old and current mining processes as well. In order to carry out this project Tech Salt S.A., concessionaire of the Loulé rock-salt mines, has partnered with the tour company Picturesque Journey. All those who are interested are invited to visit the space, which entertains the curiosity of the inhabitants and visitors of the region. The mines will be open from October 7th, 2019.

Municipality of Tavira announces start of work on new bridge over Almargem River

T

he municipality of Tavira announced that the contract for the implementation of a pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Almargem River (in Cabanas) is already underway. At this point, the old structure has already been dismantled, and been followed by the assembly of the new bridge. The council will be working with a wooden construction specialist called Carmo estimating that the construction period will last a maximum of 120 days. It is recalled that in a statement released to the press in recent weeks, the Municipality stated that the bridge had “very poor safety conditions in relation to the regulatory requirements laid down by law, as well as the detected anomalies, lead us to question its full use, for both pedestrians and cyclists.” Back in April construction work on a bridge down the river was completed. These works were done on the bridge over the river Almargem on the EN125 Road, between Tavira and Conceição. The process lasted seven months, after the end of the construction work was pushed back by fifteen days. This bridge had a core structural problem. Its renovation was part of the requalification of the road and it represented an investment of 500.000 euros by Infraestruturas de Portugal.

Dinner in a Bottle. ChilliBoy Hot Tomato Salsa. Ingredients. • 1 Bottle ChilliBoy Hot Tomato Salsa. • 600gm Frozen small prawns. Defrosted in some luke warm water. • 1 Onion. Peeled and roughly chopped. • 1 Can Chopped Tomatoes. • 200ml Tomato Puree. • 3-4 Garlic Cloves. Roughly chopped. • 30ml Garlic & Ginger Paste. Hopefully you have a stock in the fridge. • 250ml White wine. • Bunch Fresh Rosemary. Finely chopped. • 15ml Oregano. • 250ml frozen peas. • 60ml Olive Oil. • Pasta or rice as per your choice. I like to use Anelini Rigate or mini Macaroni. • Fresh bunch Basil leaves. Roughly chopped. Method. Ensure the prawns are defrosted, if the skins are still on, remove them and the vein. You need to ensure the rice or pasta is preprepared, boil in well salted water until al-

dente, remove from the heat and drain in a colander rinsing with cold water to stop the cooking process. You have 2 options when serving, if using a mini pasta, you can mix it in with the tomato sauce mix. Alternatively if serving with spaghetti or rice, the tomato sauce mix can be served on a bed of the rice or spaghetti. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, fry the onions for a few minutes until just opaque add the garlic, can of chopped tomatoes, oregano, garlic & ginger paste. Mix in well, bring to the simmer for 5 minutes then add the puree, white wine and rosemary, bring back to the simmer add the bottle of tomato salsa, peas and the prawns, allow to simmer for at least 5 minutes. Finally add the pasta bring it back to a very light simmer before removing from the heat. Season with a generous sprinkle of chopped basil leaves gently mixed in, seal with the lid and allow to stand for 5 minutes. It goes well with a salad if you

have anything in the fridge. An extra note. If you have anything else in the pantry, for example I might add some chopped sundried tomatoes, chopped green anchovy olives and or capers when available.

TIA ANA

ia Ana is the entrepreneurial concept of the charming Carvalho family. Set in the countryside just outside the impressive main city of Faro the family’s dream became a reality after converting a ruin in the extensive grounds. Mother of the family, Ana Paula Carvalho was a teacher at the University of Faro specializing In biology nutrition and human genetics, before she retired. Her mother was an excellent cook and inspired

The house consists of the modern restaurant with further accommodation with magnificent views of the Faro skyline. restaurant, goes perfectly with the standard of first class cuisine. Chef Ricardo studied at the School of Tourism in Vila Real de Santo António going on to work in Warsaw, Poland for many years as well as some of the leading hotels, such as the intercontinental on the West side of the Algarve. Brother Nuno completed his degree in Agronomy in Lisbon and went on to pursue a career in engineering working within large projects in both Angola as well as Dubai. It was the impressive Oceana hotel in Dubai where Ricardo was responsible for the reinforcing of 260 balconies to the existing building and he has has also worked extensively in irrigation projects in public places. He returned to Portugal and has joined the family using his skills to transform the grounds with meticulously planted vegetables, landscaping, green houses and orchard of various fruit tree varieties. Their father is a civil engineer and helped with the construction works. Every detail has been thought through after the plot was bought in 2016 and proudly opened on the 11th June this year. Tia Ana prides itself in being 100 per cent fully organic certified. Their ethos is to run the modern farm to produce everything that the restaurant needs, vegetables, fruits, and herbs which are professionally tended to by Jimmy, the farm manager. With a specious and modern outside sunlit terrace with panoramic views of the mountains lunch or dinner can be taken either outside

amongst the immaculate plantation or dine inside the chic, bright area. Background music plays whilst you take in the serenity and the echoes of the water well system from the exterior. The appetizing menu consists of lighter lunches whilst dinner is gourmet style but with large portions all home made. Choose from divinely prepared Sea Bass, Pica Pau, Scallops or Duck with mouth watering deserts, prepared by Ana, such as Chocolate Cake and Panna Cotta. Tia Ana makes the environment a priority producing most of their energy using solar panels, hot water is also provided by the sun. They minimize plastic packaging and whenever possible, select local suppliers for the goods that they can’t produce on the farm as well as fresh fish from the sea and national meats. They embrace the Mediterranean Diet as a whole, not only in food, but also with a cultural and sociological concept. A warm and welcoming family, devoted to well being and cuisine. Artesis Galeria This month Artesis Galleria showcases various works inspired by a poem written by Fernando Pessoa

At Times I have.. At times I have happy ideas, Sudden happy ideas, among other ideas, And in words with which they naturally shake free .. After writing, I read ... What made me write that? Where have I been to find that? Where did that come from to me? It is better than me ... Have we been, in the world, at most, pen and ink? With which somebody writes properly what we here merely jot down ...

F

rom November 5th to 30th Artesis Galeria will hold a collective exhibition of work submitted by artists inspired by the Alvaro de Campos Poem. “As Vezes…. or “At times I have…” The concept started with an open invitation to the local artist community to submit one or two pieces of original work. We have received work from 22 artists which includes an impressive range of artistic media, including painting, ceramics, glass work, photography, weaving and sculpture…

The rise of contemporary home design in portugal, by Stefan Humpenöder Managing Director, Land & Houses Algarve

I

n nearly all parts of Portugal traditional homes have dominated for so long that, only some years ago, those clients looking in particular for a home in a more modern design, finished their property search empty-handed because of lack of supply. However more recently contemporary design has enjoyed a huge rise in popularity. The demand for real estate in Portugal continued constantly to rise during the last few years often in relation with the NHR program or Golden Visa regime. Global investors continue to believe Portugal is “the place to be” market. This tendency is also underlined by the increase in new, more modern designed contemporary real estate projects. Since approximately 2016, apartments and villas are again being sold successfully from off plan. This is notably due to the great demand for real estate in contemporary design with a more international flavour. But what does the word contemporary mean? Contemporary architecture / design means “the style of the moment”. It is not easy to define, because contemporary style can change again to match whatever is popular right now. So, we can say it is innovative and based on the desire to design and build things that are different from what was done in the past. The contemporary architecture enables constructors and self-builders to make a statement of individuality, it breaks with past traditions and with what have become standard. Contemporary buildings are designed to be noticed and to amaze and they stand out in their unique modern style architecture and modern interior with cool spaces, sleek design, straight lines and elegance; very often styled by designers,

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Property or created by renowned Portuguese and international architects. They often boast an A+ energy rating as the latest energy saving technologies are being used. But like always in life “some people love it, others hate it” About 10-15 years ago, we noticed the appearance of the first contemporary designer houses in Portugal which then gained more and more ground within the whole region of Portugal. Larger windows provide access to more natural light. The visual connection to the outside/outdoor is most likely one of the main drivers behind the contemporary-home movement. But there are more reasons for this upcoming trend. The lifestyle has definitely changed…. today´s lifestyle is about removing obstructions, it’s about outdoor living, simplicity, functionality, entertaining and abstract ideas of light and open plan living. Studies confirm what many homeowners already know from experience; large open plan living areas with lots of sunlight allows occupants to more recharge and relax. Daylight exposure is linked to an elevated mood and this is what most northern European clients are looking for. Large open plan areas rounded up with the best design furniture transform a large room into a warm and welcoming sociable environment for the whole family and brings joy to people. Contemporary architecture is based on

www.eastalgarvemag.com

the latest and innovative technologies of construction, particularly the use of glass, insulation, steel and reinforced concrete. The use of the latest very advanced technologies and the newest building materials, but also the progress in computer-aided design created lots of innovation within the construction and architecture industry. Insulating glass for example has become a relevant component of modern buildings since many improvements could be achieved during the last years. The right insulating features are improving the home performance, so it is a good contribution to the protection of the environment with a sustainable saving of energy. All these new technologies were simply just not available some years ago. But now it is and the steady progress is also one the drivers of the new home design. Contemporary design is also designed for low maintenance living. These villas are best sold "ready to move in"; interior designers design the entire interior with high-quality materials, custom furniture, art objects, lighting effects for special LED decoration lighting, designer bathrooms and designer kitchens. These include networked home technology, complete audio and video installations as well as ecological climate systems with geothermal energy and solar panels. Outside, the modern-luxurious style continues. There are impressive glass courtyards, extensive sun decks, mostly

heated infinity pools or huge swimming pools with Whirlpool and several covered terraces with dining and lounge areas. On average, a contemporary style villa is hard to find in Portugal under 1.200,000 €, and prices can soar to several million euros depending on the quality, its location and materials or finishes used. The lack of supply is also the reason why contemporary properties are more expensive. WHY THAI

MASSAGE M

any people believe that the health benefits of Thai massage include lowering stress, boosting energy, and improving athletic

performance. Thai massage uses gentle pressure and stretching techniques to relax the whole body. This is an ancient healing practice that originated in India. It dates back to around 2,500–7,000 years ago. The technique that Thai massage practitioners use is very different from what people in the West may be accustomed to. Unlike Swedish or Shiatsu massage techniques, in which a person passively lies on a bed, the client lies on the floor and participates more actively in the massage. This article will look at the benefits of Thai massage, how it can help athletes, and some of the side effects that people may experience.

30

Health benefits of Thai massage Thai massage has many health benefits, from lowering stress to relieving muscular tension. It can even increase energy. Below, we discuss five health benefits of Thai massage. Lowers stress Stress is not necessarily bad. Often, stress can act as a positive motivator that might help push people to perform better and accomplish more in their personal and professional lives. However, too much stress can negatively affect mental and physical health. Chronic, or long-lasting, stress can lead to serious illnesses, including depression and cardiovascular disease. Thai massage uses gentle pressure and stretching techniques to relax the body. A 2015 study found that Thai massage significantly reduces levels of a certain stress marker present in the saliva, called

1

sAA. The researchers concluded that Thai massage is more effective at reducing stress in healthy people than simply resting. Boosts energy Research has shown that Thai massage can increase people's physical energy levels. One randomized trial examined the effects of Thai and Swedish massages in people who were experiencing fatigue. The results revealed that Thai massage increased energy and mental stimulation, while Swedish massage was more likely to improve relaxation and sleep. The Thai massage technique is based on the notion of energy lines, or Sen. Most practitioners believe that there are various Sen, or channels, of energy within the body. Sen correspond to different parts of the body, such as the bones, muscles, blood, and nerves. Some Sen also affect the mind and consciousness. These are called subtle

2

www.eastalgarvemag.com

channels. The theory suggests that tight muscles cause blockages within different Sen. These blockages reduce the flow of life energy, which results in stiffness, pain, and illness. Thai massage uses different techniques that either open or constrict different Sen to correct the flow of life energy. Relieves headaches Court-type is a specific form of Thai massage that involves applying pressure to specific energy channels. One 2015 study found court-type Thai massage is an effective treatment for people who have chronic tension headaches. They also had lower measures of tissue hardness, which the scientists measured using a handheld device. Stimulates circulation Thai massage can promote the circulation of both blood and lymph through the use of gentle stretches. These yoga-like

3

4

www.eastalgarvemag.com

stretches increase blood circulation, which fills the body's tissues with oxygen. This helps promote cell growth and heart health. One study examined the benefits of Thai foot massage in people with peripheral neuropathy, a common complication of diabetes. The researchers found that this massage helped improve people's balance. They believe that this is because it improved blood circulation, which, in turn, stimulates the somatosensory system. This is a system that plays a major role in balance. Improves range of motion Thai massage incorporates yoga-like stretches to reduce stress and improve circulation. The gradual, gentle stretching will enhance the person's flexibility over time, allowing a greater range of motion. Thai massage may also improve the circulation of the fluid in the joints, or synovial fluid, which reduces friction between the joints. This can improve joint

mobility and range of motion. Portugal Launches #Brelcome Health Campaign

I

Portugal's tourist board promotes Health Tourism by launching its latest campaign reaching over 8 million people in the UK within months.

n an effort to continue its longstanding relationship with the UK, Portugal’s tourist board, Turismo de Portugal, has launched #BRELCOME Health, a campaign specially developed for British tourists visiting Portugal for heath checks. It will allow British medical tourists to access fixed price health check-up services from three of Portugal’s largest private health providers, Lusíadas, CUF and Hospital da Luz. A specialised ‘Portugal Health Passport’, launched as part of the campaign, will offer

tourists premium health checkup services, covering both emergency care and preventive medicine. British tourists seeking medical attention present this Health Passport to access the services at these fixed prices. Tourists seeking specialised services as part of health tourism will have to pre-book to access specific treatments. Fixed price treatments cover five types of health checks; general check-ups, and more specialist check-ups for heart, dental, ophthalmology and dermatology. Turismo de Portugal says that the healthcare

services will be offered to British tourists irrespective of the Brexit outcome. The UK is the largest source market of tourists to Portugal, and the country is keen to maintain this flow. It recently launched the “Brelcome” campaign to reaffirm the country’s ongoing commitment to British citizens, with the slogan “Brelcome, Portugal will never leave you”. Turismo de Portugal claims that, within a month of its launch, the campaign reached over 8 million people in the UK

ogs, cats, rabbits, chickens and horses, our pets give us so much joy but they also bring with them the responsibility of ownership and associated costs. Our pets invariably need a loving home, plenty of exercise, a healthy diet, a comfy bed, and toys and treats to keep them occupied…..the list goes on! Dogs, for example, can be surprisingly expensive with the PDSA in the UK recently estimating that the lifetime costs of dog ownership can be a minimum of €7,000 and anything up to €35,000 depending on the dog’s size, breed, health, and lifespan. A few thoughts on how you can keep on top of these pet ownership costs. Regular check-ups Don’t skip your pet’s annual examination. It can be so much more expensive (and risky) to treat illnesses than to protect against them. It’s also a good idea to shop around for veterinary practices by comparing fees and the quality of services provided. While some vaccines are optional, others are essential, especially here in the Algarve with mites and fleas an ever-present hazard. Spay or Neuter Spaying or neutering your pet can save a lot of money by preventing serious health problems, including uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers. Brush those teeth With veterinarians reporting that 80% of dogs over the age of three require dental or gum treatment, it’s really important to keep

on top of their oral health. Dental disease can lead to heart and kidney problems and expensive procedures. And please don’t use toothpaste made for HOOMANS! as this contains fluoride and may irritate your pet's stomach. Protect from parasites Flea and tick infestations can cause a host of costly medical problems from minor skin irritations to life-threatening ailments. Stick with a good quality flea and tick solution to keep those nasty critters at bay and never use a product intended for a dog on a cat. Buy good quality food A good quality pet food is often more costeffective in the long run than a cheaper one. Buy in bulk and save money. Avoid overfeeding your pet, which can lead to obesity and other health problems. Brush your pets It’s a great experience for your pet and will reduce the amount of hair floating around your home, and your cats will have fewer hairballs. Look after those nails too, as overgrown nails can be so painful and lead to disfigurement. Consider pet insurance Certain providers offer pet care as a supplement to their home insurance products. This can include payment of medical, pharmaceutical and hospitalization expenses, emergency transport, and kennel and cattery costs. More information on the many benefits of professional dog grooming is available on our website at: https://www.thespotteddog.net/

hroughout all these years, the owners have faced the constant challenge to invest in the best technology, innovation and quality customer service. The progress and investment have been ongoing, and today they have the most modern technology in olive presses, from the reception of the fruit, to the extraction, storage and packaging of the olive oil. Various modifications were made over the course of the years, major changes being the transfer from manual to hydraulic processing in 1941, and the installation of continuous lines in 1991, as well as ensuring compliance with the legal

requirements for food quality and safety through the implementation of the HACCP system. Olive oil is a fruit juice. A quality olive oil is a juice obtained from healthy, fresh fruit that is perfectly ripened, using mechanical processes that do not alter the chemical nature of its components during extraction and storage. It is important to distinguish between the varieties of olives and the quality of olive oil. Two different types of olive trees produce distinct varieties of olive oils, each with its own colour, aroma and flavour, although they are equal in quality. That will depend on a combination of factors, such as the weather, type of

soil, and the care taken in the extraction and storage process. To define the quality of an olive oil, various criteria are used: 1 – CHEMICAL PARAMETERS Degree of acidity: Technically, this is the amount of free fatty acids in relation to the total oleic acid. A high degree of acidity results from factors such as the poor condition of the fruit, poor handling or poor conservation. The degree of acidity has no bearing on the flavour of the olive oil. Peroxide index: This indicates the initial oxidation of the olive oil and the deterioration that may have taken place in the natural antioxidants, such as the polyphenols.

39

Ultraviolet absorption: This is used to detect the abnormal components of an olive oil. 2 – SENSORY ANALYSIS Organoleptic characteristics: Sensations detected by the senses, mainly related to the smell and taste. These are defined by specialists through a panel of testers. Each variety of olive produces an olive oil with different organoleptic characteristics. In turn, and within the same variety, various olive oils are produced, depending on factors such as microclimates, type of soil and the altitude. The tasting is mandatory, to be able to evaluate the character and personality of an olive oil. This is where the aroma and characteristic flavour of each olive oil is detected. It is important to note that the colour does not reflect the quality of the olive oil. As for the taste,

40

a few drops are sufficient to sense its sweetness. The acidic flavour is tasted in the centre of the tongue. The bitter or spicy flavours are noted in the throat. The most common positive attributes in the tastings are the following: Bitter: Characteristic taste of olive oil made from green olives; it can be more pleasant or less so, depending on its intensity. Sweet: Smooth and agreeable taste of an olive oil, in which, while not being sweetened, the bitter, astringent or spicy attributes do not stand out. Fruity: The aroma and taste are reminiscent of healthful, fresh fruit, picked at the peak of ripeness. Ripely fruity: Suggested by olive oil obtained from mature fruits, generally having a subdued aroma and sweet

flavour. Grass: Aroma and flavour characteristic of some olive oils that remind one of recently cut grass. Green leaves: Aroma and flavour of olive oil made from olives that were too green or that were crushed with leaves. Apple: Aroma and flavour of olive oil that reminds us of this fruit. HOW OLIVE OIL IS MADE The olive tree is typical of the Mediterranean coast and requires a climate characterised by mild winters, rainy autumns and springs and dry and hot summers. Its growth is slow. It can live for hundreds or even thousands of years. To obtain olive oil, the following steps are necessary: Harvesting of the fruit: The olive tree blooms in the spring, when the fruit

SANTA CATARINA Olive oil made from the olive trees owned by the local residents and farmers of the East Algarve region. begins to form and mature, turning from green to black, beginning in the summer until the end of autumn/early winter, when it is harvested. Olives can be harvested manually, by a system called varejo (striking the tree with large, flexible rods, causing the olives to fall on canvas previously placed under the olive tree) or by mechanical means (equipment with mechanical arms that shake the trees and serve the same purpose as the rods). Transport to the press: The harvested olives are carried to the press, where they are crushed. When they get to the press, the olives are stored in low piles to avoid heating and breaking the skin of the fruit. Doing this minimises the fermentation of the olives, which reduces the quality of olive oil. For this reason, in order to get a quality olive oil with low acidity, the olives

www.eastalgarvemag.com

must be processed within 24 hours of their being harvested. Washing: The olives are placed on conveyor belts that pass through a curtain of air that removes the leaves that invariably end up with the fruit. Then, the fruits are selected for quality and washed in running water so they can be crushed. Grinding: The grinding consists of crushing the fruits (including the pits) until an oily paste is formed, its consistency being controlled by the addition of water, if necessary. Extraction of the olive oil: (separation of the solids from the liquids): Extraction is the last step in obtaining olive oil and may be done in three different ways. The most modern extraction methods use centrifuges, while the oldest method is by pressing.

Olives are processed at the Mill (lagar) in Santa Catarina, Tavira, where the highest quality oil is produced. Contact Lagar Santa Catarina to find your nearest stockist. How to grow

Succulents In botany, succulent plants, also known as succulents, are plants with parts that are thickened, fleshy and engorged, usually to retain water in arid climates or soil conditions.

W

hen you start playing with plants for your garden you have a refreshing alteration of scale, focusing on individual leaves as opposed to vast sweeps of a border. It is light work, intricate and absorbing, yet it can have equally highoctane impact. Succulent plants, with their plump, water-retaining leaves and stems, are often quite chubby compared to many species, yet close inspection can reveal that they look delicate and exotic. Many are ideal to adorn your garden. Succulents are a large, diverse group and what counts is somewhat debatable. Debatable succulents include halophytes (plants that grow in salt marshes), bulbs (many people consider a few bulbs such as Bowia and Heamanthus to be succulents), Welwitchia (a weird cone baring plant all the other generally accepted succulents are flowering plants) and even some cacti. Even if you exclude all these, you're left with a huge range: rain forest epiphytes (e.g. Hoya and Schlumbergera), alpines from the mountains of Europe, cacti from Canada and Patagonia, not to mention all those succulents from deserts and semi-deserts in fairly warm to very hot climates. For the purposes of this article, I'll just consider the warmer climate desert plants that are grown as houseplants in cooler climates. Even this group is very varied and sometimes plants with very different cultural requirements are included in the same genus (e.g. Euphorbia and Mammillaria). (Most the succulent bulbs will grow well if treated like this.) Light: Most plants (including succulents) are basically solar powered and succulents like more light than most. They'll do best on a south-facing wall (north-facing in the southern hemisphere). Although succulents do well outside all year here you must keep an eye on your plants, as succulents can be burnt by too much light and heat but this rather depends on the type and where you live. Also plants can aclimatetize to some extent. Heat: Many succulents will tolerate (if not prefer) to have a cool winter period when they only have protection from frost (many will tolerate some frost). However there are others that need to be kept above 10 degrees C. If you have a greenhouse, you may like to concentrate on the kinds that tolerate cooler conditions (they include most the small round cacti that have nice flowers, some large cacti, most Opuntias, most Crassulaceae, Aloes, Agaves, some

Euphorbias and all Messembrianthemums). If you're growing your succulents somewhere that stays hot all the time, you should stick to the more tropical kinds: Melocactus, many large cacti, some Euphorbias, stapeliads, Kalanchoes, Pachypodiums etc. although you can probably get away with some of the more tolerant types like Aloes. Water: This is complicated. Most books advise to water about once a week from spring to autumn and not at all in the winter. This is fine if you're keeping them cool in the winter, and don't have winter growing types. If you're keeping them warm all year, you really need to water all year, but probably a bit less in the winter. Winter growing kinds will need watering about once every 2 to 4 weeks in the winter. You really have to learn to tell when things are looking thirsty. The stemless Messembrianthemums are very fussy about when they get watered and they're all different! Fertilizer: Accepted wisdom says that succulents like low nitrogen fertilizer. However I think balanced fertilizer (with trace elements) is perfectly OK. Compost: Succulents will grow well in wide range of composts. Many people use peat based compost. Others use inorganic compost composed of things like pumice, perlite and sand. I mostly use a perlite-based compost and the only things I've found it doesn't work for are Bulbines. Anacampseros and, more so, Avonia like loam based compost. Pots: Old books recommend clay pots but plastic works just fine. Don't put plants in pots smaller than about 5cm as this

44

will really dwarf the plants. If you're going to put multiple plants in the same container, make sure they like similar conditions and grow at about the same speed. Don't mix winter and summer growing plants or cacti and Crassulaceae (the latter take over) and don't mix stemless Messembrianthemums with anything. Pests and diseases: Again complicated

as pests keep evolving immunity and the availability of insecticides keeps changing. The main problems are: Mealy bugs (white fuzzy things that look a bit like small woodlice), root mealy bugs (similar but live in the soil), red spider mites (very small, cause brown scarring) and various types of rot. Many people use systemic insecticides and fungicides every year or so but crassulaceae really don't like systemic insecticides or Malathion. Red spider mites don't like being sprayed with water. I use bulb powder in the compost to prevent fungus and root mealy bugs. If you can put your plants outside or let them get cold in the winter, it will help keep the pests down. If you have a plant that dies at the base, you can often chop off the dead and dying bits and get what's left to take root. You may also be able to graft the top bit. Some more easily grown succulents (good to start with): Aeonium, Agave, Aloe, Apteranthus, Beaucarnia, Carpobotros, Cereus, Crassula, Dracena, Delosperma, Echeveria, Echinopsis (now includes Lobivia, Trichocereus etc.), Euphorbia (some, remember there are tropical and cooler climate species), Gasteria, Graptopetalum, Gymnocalycium, Haworthia, Kalanchoe, Lampranthus, Lithops, Mammillaria (easy species include: boccasana, gracilis and prolifera), Notocactus, Opuntia, Pachyphytum, Plectranthus, Rebutia, Sedum (warmer climate kinds the cold climate types should be grown in the garden in a cold climate) and Senecio.

Portugal offers sun, sea… and tax efficiency

W

ith its sunny climate, stunning beaches and world-class golf courses, Portugal offers endless appeal. But did you know you could potentially enjoy a decade of generous tax breaks – including tax-free UK pension income – by moving here? This special tax treatment is available to new residents through Portugal’s ‘non-habitual residence’ (NHR) tax regime. While NHR offers a flat 20% income tax rate to those employed in Portugal in certain professions (instead of the usual scale rates up to 48%), you do not need to be working here to benefit. Tax-free foreign income Under NHR, most income that is either from a foreign source or taxable in another country is exempt from Portuguese taxation. This means British expatriates can potentially receive UK rental income, capital gains on real estate, interest, dividends and non-Portuguese employment income tax-free for their first ten years here. Most non-government UK pension income – including from private pensions, company pensions and the State Pension – will also be tax-free under NHR. So if you take your UK pension as regular income, you can generally do so as a non-habitual resident without being

taxed in either country. Beware, however, that you may be subject to Portuguese income tax if you withdraw your UK pension fund over a period of less than ten years, so take advice for the best approach. How can you access NHR benefits? People of any nationality can potentially qualify for NHR if they have not been resident in Portugal in the last five calendar years. You need to meet Portuguese residency rules to be eligible, however, so it will be much easier to apply as an EU citizen with full freedom of movement. Currently, you can acquire Portuguese residency by spending at least 182 days a year or having your main home here. Although Brexit itself will not affect Britons’ eligibility, domestic tax rules are always subject to change. So if you have recently arrived, register for NHR with the Portuguese tax authorities as soon as possible to lock-in today’s benefits. Other tax benefits in Portugal Even if you do not qualify for NHR, Portugal can still be a highly tax-efficient home. There are, for example, opportunities to enjoy extremely favourable tax treatment on capital investments. There is a wealth tax of sorts, but rates are relatively low and it only affects high-value Portuguese property. Portugal’s version of

inheritance tax (stamp duty) is also limited; at just 10%, it only applies to Portuguese assets, and spouses and children are exempt. Ultimately, the best course of action for you will depend on your individual circumstances and aims. Whatever your situation, it is sensible to take personalised advice from a cross-border specialist – sooner rather than later – to make sure you take full advantage of current opportunities in Portugal. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Readers Q&A

ach month we receive different questions from our readers, although some of these questions are related to specific situations, sometimes the answer may help you to better understand the tax system in Portugal and answer the queries from other readers. If you also have some questions regarding tax in Portugal, please feel free to send it to us. I am a Non-Habitual Resident and applied in 2018 for my added-value activity as a consultant, to be able to benefit from the 20% flat rate on my income. However, my application is still pending and although I have the NHR, the tax authorities have not yet changed my tax register to allow me to benefit for this flat rate. The issue is that my employer has paid my salary in 2018 and I was supposed to submit my IRS for 2018 already, if I do it without the added-value activity I will pay a lot more tax. What is your advice? The added-value activity will allow you to be taxed on a 20% flat rate, on all your employment or self-employment income, arising from that activity. This registration will give you the right to be taxed as such for a maximum period of 10 years, or until the validity of your NHR. Until September 2019, this added value registration was always done by post, in a tax office in Lisbon. However, from now on this registration is no longer required. In fact, what we will do is submit your IRS tax declaration as if you were already registered with an addedvalue activity. It will be necessary to submit to your local tax office, the contracts, pay-slips and other, that will prove your added-value activity, but no longer required to wait for Lisbon to update your tax register. Contact us to find out how this can

Q

be done. I am a British citizen with a Portuguese NIF (Tax number) and owning a property in Boliqueime. I currently have my address (tax domicile) in the UK. After Brexit what are the implications and what action should I take towards the Portuguese Tax Authorities? All citizens residing abroad, specifically in a third country, outside the EU or the European Economic Area are obliged to appoint a fiscal representative with a tax domicile in Portugal. So, in case that you live in the UK and do not have a fiscal representative, you should appoint one. I have a property that I bought in 2014 and I am now selling. We bought for 300.000€, but now that my husband is no longer with us, I wish to sell and return to the UK. I have an offer for 380.000€, how is the capital gains tax calculated and can I roll it over if I reinvest in the UK? As you are resident, the capital gain tax is levied on 50% of your gain. However, please note that in your case, the capital gain is not 80.000€. In fact, you bought half of the property in 2014, with your husband, but the other half you inherited when your husband passed away. The transference of this share of the property is based on the tax value of the property at the time of the death. The tax value of the property is normally a lot less than the commercial value or the purchase price. In your case you are selling for 380.000€, but the purchase price is calculated like this: 50% purchased by 150.000€ in 2015 and 50% purchased by 65.000€ (half of the tax value of the property) in 2018. The CGT in rough figures will be calculated on 380.000€ minus 215.000€. The taxable gain is 50% of this, minus all the taxes paid at

purchase, the documented costs to repair or refurbish the property and the commission paid to the estate agent. You can only avoid the tax, if you reinvest the whole proceedings of the sale, on a new property within the EU. If you reinvest part of the sale, then you will be paying tax on a pro rata basis. As you intend to reinvest in the UK, it’s advisable that you do that while the UK is in the EU. Currently, the countries that are eligible for the reinvestment are all the EU countries, plus Norway and Iceland. I am taking advice and considering setting up a Trust as part of my pension planning. What are the tax implications in case of distributions from a trust? Distributions from trusts are taxable in Portugal at a tax rate of 28%. But please note that this amount can be higher, if the trust is registered in a ‘blacklisted’ jurisdiction. In these cases, the tax would be 35%. Blacklisted jurisdictions include some popular territories, such as the British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Belize, Monaco, San Marino, etc. What is the inheritance tax in Portugal? In Portugal there is no inheritance tax. If you own a property this will be transferred to your inheritors without payment of inheritance tax. However, there is a stamp duty obligation when transferring the assets to the beneficiaries. In case the inheritors are children, spouses or parents, the stamp duty payable is 0.8%. The rate for other beneficiaries, is 10%. Please note that this stamp duty will be calculated on the tax value of the property. Please feel free to send us the questions you may have to ricardo@allfinance.pt. We will select some of these to be published.

We were lucky enough to be invited by Gaynor Stapleton of the Algarve Wine Society to experience one of their wonderful wine pairing dinners in Faro

S

eventy three of the Algarve Wine Society´s membership of two hundred and fifty recently participated in a fun evening of wine tasting and dining at one of Faro’s newer eateries. Restaurante Hápetite, located just outside the walls of Faro´s old city, is unique. With a building steeped in history, it started life in the ownership of the church as a place for fruit collection in 1742, progressed to being a glass factory of note and now has found its niche as a stunning, high roofed restaurant. In comparison to the Hápetite building Tejo based wine producers Quinta da Lagoalva , is a mere baby, having commenced production in 1888. Family member and winemaker, Diogo Campilho, tore himself away from his still ongoing harvest in order to present his wines to the Society. Espumante was sipped on the outside space under the city walls before a dinner of modern Algarvian cuisine was served. Each of the five courses paired with an excellent and distinctive wine. Lagoalva boasts a strong export market to all corners of the globe and prides itself on using both Portuguese and international grape varieties. Meet Joaquim Soares, recently appointed as Head Green keeper at Quinta do Vale Golf Course, who has improved the greens significantly in only six months, increasing the Stimp roll from seven to nine.

I

n 2007 the Quinta do Vale Golf Resort was opened to challenge both beginners and experienced golfers alike with the expertise and creativity of designer Seve Ballesteros. Integrating into the majestic landscape with breathtaking views over the Guadiana River, the course makes excellent use of the natural conditions and there are spectacular holes. The degree of difficulty varies between holes which means the course is competitive and also thrilling to play and natural hazards make the right club choice crucial. The course has excelled this year largely due to the new Management team and the expertise and dedication of the new Head Green Keeper, Joaquim Soares from the picturesque fishing town of Olhão in the East Algarve. Joaquim studied at the Algarve University, completing his PHD in Agronomy. He joined the prestigious and award winning San Lorenzo Golf Club in Quinta do Lago where he spent two and a half years applying all the knowledge learnt from university, bringing new and fresh ideas and at the same time absorbing all the best practices/

techniques the expert maintenance team were using there. Joaquim’s passion is the esthetics of the golf course, it’s upkeep, improvement and sustainability. Quinta do Vale is a challenging layout in a unique natural environment and requires complex and visionary techniques to in particular ensure that the greens are true, firm and fast. Joaquim explained the layering process that ensures the grass is strong and is kept in excellent condition. He has prepared a program to bring the greens at Quinta do Vale to pristine condition. Layering, irrigation and applying regular top layers to the greens with the correct sand composition has already added inches in the root system to ensure they are keep at their very best. Joaquim has appointed the right team, as well as purchasing new machinery in order to fulfill his plan. Joaquim explained, “The budget needs have been met to make the professional maintenance and improvements a reality for the course. We are using new grass and the irrigation and sprinkler systems have been updated.” An environmentally friendly new water saving system is planned in the near

future, more definition has been brought to the tees on the course and new greens that are resistant to salt and dry weather. Working closely with his team Joaquim is the first to arrive at the course each morning, and the last to leave at night, earning the respect of everyone. His hands on approach and dedication is obvious. Eco conscious Quinta do Vale is working with the council to bring grey water from Vila Real which will meet 80 per cent of irrigation needs. Eight kilometers of pipes are already in place, bringing water up to a height of 70 meters and just need to be connected. The government and local authorities are involved in helping to make this happen in the near future. The promoters of Quinta do Vale Golf Resort, in collaboration with Seve Ballesteros, have designed a golf course that aims to position itself as one of the top courses in the Algarve. With Joaquim and his dedicated team this is set to be a reality. A stunning environment and wonderfully challenging course. Many thanks to Joaquim for spending time out of his busy schedule to explain the exciting advances at Quinta do Vale.

Danish delight and Liverpool legends

A

All the latest sports news from Chris Wright.

fter their successful visit last year East Algarve Walking Football (EAWF) was delighted to welcome a return visit from Denmark by FC Prostata; all their players having recovered from prostrate cancer. Good sporting prowess and lively banter further cemented the bonds of friendship between the two groups. A fortnight earlier EAWF Olhão 50+ walked away with the top trophy at Lagos Strollers first International Walking Football Tournament at the well appointed Clube Desportivo de Odiaxere. Twelve teams from Spain, Scotland, Liverpool and the Algarve competed over two days with Alan Kennedy and John Aldridge turning out for the Celtic Reds. Alan Kennedy, who scored

the decisive goals in Liverpool’s European Cup successes of 1981 and 1984, has been playing walking football twice a week on Merseyside for the past two years. He said, “it gets me out of my comfort zone. Instead of having an extra cup of tea in the morning, I’m meeting people, talking to people, finding out about people and it has been very rewarding for me.” John Aldridge’s illustrious career included spells at Liverpool and Real Sociedad as well as representing the Irish Republic in sixty-nine internationals and scoring nineteen goals. In the well organised and tightly contested tournaments the results were: 50+ SECTION: 1st EAWF Olhão; 2nd Esquina Park Rangers, Costa Cálida, Murcia (Spain); 3rd Celtic Reds (Liverpool); 4th EAWF Tavira; 5th Walking

Football Spain (Marbella) and 6th EAWF São Bras. In the 60+ SECTION the first day’s results were expunged as a team from Vilamoura were found to have fielded three underage players. The second day ended with the Geri-Atricks of Argyll (Scotland) taking top spot; 2nd Browns (Vilamoura); 3rd EAWF Olhão; 4th Lagos Tigers; 5th Lagos Oranges; 6th EAWF Tavira. Over sixty players, officials and members of the public had their blood sugar levels checked for possible risk of diabetes by Algarve Health and Social Care at EAWF sessions in Olhão and Tavira recently. Peter Diprose said, "a quarter of those tested were close to or outside the safe limits and we have advised them to consult their medical practitioners."

CARDS FOR EVERY OCCASION?

R White card for outstanding sportsmanship

ed and yellow cards for dismissals and cautions, first introduced at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, were the brainwave of English referee Ken Aston. They made their debut in the English game in 1976 with the first player to receive a red being Blackburn Rovers winger Dave Wagstaffe. Subsequently, in certain areas of the game such as futsal, 5-a-side football and walking football, a blue card denotes two minutes in the ‘sin bin’. Now the Algarve Football Association (AFA) is introducing a white card to be shown by referees in football and futsal games for acts of fair-play and excellent behaviour. Why stop at red, yellow, blue and white; there could be a whole host of different colour cards to brighten up games with VAR being brought into the action to analysis and discuss. Burgundy to be shown to players who make dazzling runs having possibly had an extra glass of wine at lunchtime. Green for teams who arrive at a game by bicycle or on foot thus helping to reduce global emissions and a black card for players who put through their own goal! Finally a large gray coloured card for all those officials who put money first and are gradually destroying the foundations of ‘the beautiful game’!

productive month saw SC Olhanense chalk-up victories against Sintra (A) 3-1 and Lusitano Evora (H) 5-1 plus a 0-0 draw away at Olimpico Montijo. The team started November two points clear at the top of the Campeonato Portugal Division D, ahead of Alverca (Vila França de Xira), who knocked Sporting Lisbon out of the Portugal Cup, and Louletano. The game against Lusitano Evora marked Olhanense's support for the cancer research campaign bringing awareness of the need to continue to battle against the deadly disease. Olhanense entertain Sacavenense on Sunday 17th November 3.00pm at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão (behind McDonalds on the EN125) before the crucial game away at Alverca on the 1st December. Kick-off 5.00pm with the game being shown live on Canal 11 television.

ALGARVE STADIUM GETS READY FOR RONALDO

Cristiano Ronaldo

T

hursday 14th November will see the Portuguese national side play their tenth game since 2004 at the Algarve Stadium, Faro when they play Lithuania in their penultimate game in Group B of the EURO 2020 qualifiers. In September Portugal won 5-1 in Vilnius with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the first four goals! Victory against Lithuania could see the home side qualify for next year’s finals if Serbia fail to beat Luxembourg . If Portugal and Serbia win their games then the seleção will need to win in Luxembourg on the 17th November. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th goal in all competitions when he scored from the penalty spot in the 2-1 defeat against Ukraine. The Juventus superstar is also extremely successful on social media. It was revealed that Ronaldo is Instagram's biggest earner clocking up €40m over the past year, double the amount accredited to Lionel Messi, followed by Kendall Jenner €14m and David Beckham €9.5m. In fact, Ronaldo is earning so much money from social media, that his annual Juventus wage actually adds up to less. He earns a reported €30m from his contract - that's almost €13m less than he makes from Instagram.

Listen to your Golf ball Your golf ball is trying to talk to you. Let me help you understand its language.

E

very time you hit the practice range or wonder on to the golf course you may not know but there’s a quiet conversation going on between you and your golf ball. The ball is talking to you every time you make impact, trying to help you improve your game, and as it gets airborne (or not) is screaming at the top of its voice. My expertise lies in understanding their language and using that to help you get much more enjoyment from the great game of golf. Let me share some golf ball speak with you. The golf shaft is often referred to as “the engine of the golf swing”. Well it’s certainly the engine of the golf club, and changing any aspect of the shaft can often have a dramatic and positive effect on your ability. Every shaft differs in flex, weight, length, kick point, spine orientation, balance point, torque and frequency. Each shaft is then fitted with a grip which can differ in size and are cut to varying lengths...these are the

elements of the shaft that a club fitter and builder can manipulate to fit the club to your particular swing. A correctly fitted shaft is personal only to you. To begin to understand the golf balls language here are a few pointers that you can focus on next time your playing, as you watch and consider your ball flight and your typical shot pattern. Ball flight consistently too high?...typically this tells you that the shaft is too soft, too light, too high in torque, or the kick point is too low. These factors can also result in regular hooks and a wide dispersion. Ball flight consistently to low?...typically this tells you that the shaft is too firm, too heavy, too low in torque, or the kick point is too high. These factors can also result in pushes, blocks and slices. The golf ball is also telling you if the club head, shaft length and grip size are adjusted correctly to fit your swing. All of your irons and wedges are set at very particular angles. Loft, which is the angle of

the face, and lie, which is the angle it sits to the ground. These angles, set by your club fitter are critical. Difficulty in controlling your yardages?..... Your golf ball is telling you that the lofts aren’t set correctly through the set. Hitting fats and thins, hitting pulls, hooks, slices, difficulty in hitting the sweet spot, heel or toe deep divots? Your golf ball is telling you that the lie angle is too flat or too upright, your grip size is incorrect, or your shaft length needs adjustment. So the next time you are playing golf or practicing on the range, listen to your golf ball (with your eyes), I guarantee its talking to you. If it tells you any of the above, call me at Clubtec Golf... I guarantee I can help you. Oh and bye the way....if the ball after impact regularly soars high into the air with a penetrating flight, lands on the green and checks up 2 feet from the hole....thats the balls way of saying “ everything is ok”.
