them what the price is.” Otherwise, if they bring ‘couverts’ to the table, the client can eat them without having to pay, said Frota. If the customer complains, establishments are subject to fines of between €300 and €180,000, depending on the restaurant size and the nature and severity of the infraction. In addition to the fine, the restaurant can be charged with the crime of speculation, punishable by imprisonment of between six months to three years, if they insist on charging the customer. "There are two ways the customer can handle the situation. The first is to deduct the value of the 'cover charge' from the final bill and pay only what they have consumed. “The second is to ask for the complaints book, clearly stating the amount that was charged and as a safeguard photograph the menu," says Frota.

avira council has announced that improvements to the EM397 road – which links the town to the small village of Cachopo and is notorious for being poorly signaled and dangerously uneven – will begin on October 5. The renovation will cost nearly €290,000, take seven months to complete and be carried out by construction company José de Sousa Barra & Filhos. As the council explains, the bulk of the work will focus on setting up traffic signs and line marking as well as improving the stability of the road – especially at kilometre 36, near Sítio da Picota, where the uneven surface is most noticeable. The council also says it will carry out renovations at the Água de Fusos picnic park, which was devastated by fire in 2012.
he Portuguese Consumer Law Association (APDC) president today said the new ‘couverts’ law is failing. Restaurants may not charge for couverts that have not been requested by customers. If they do, they risk a minimum fine of €300 and a maximum fine of a stonking €180,000. Mário Frota, president of APDC, said today that "it is a shame what is happening" in the country and warned of the lack of knowledge of the law by restaurant owners, catering workers and consumers. "No dish, food or drink, including the 'cover charge', may be charged for if it has not been requested by the client as set out in the law dated March 1st this year," said the consumer law specialist. Frota considers it "necessary to change habits in the catering industry so that workers ask customers whether they want a couvert and tell

P
Is surgery necessary? Duarte Arrais from Fisioclube Fuzeta explains.
eople who suffer from spinal diseases are in many cases offered corrective surgery as the only option. The patient ends up suffering even more, delaying the procedure due to normal concerns before surgery. After all, like any operation, this procedure involves risks: reactions to anesthesia, infection or worsening of the clinical situation, for example. SURGERY MAY BE PREVENTED The diagnosis of some diseases affecting the spine, such as slipped disc, has increased due to the advent of M.R. imaging. Too often surgery is recommended which can be unnecessary. We often see patients being warned about the risks of delaying surgery, in danger of suffering permanent nerve damage and possibly weakening of the lower limbs or loss of control over bowels or bladder. People with suspected herniated disc are diagnosed in only 1% to 5% of the cases with the condition. Most do not have disc herniation, but other problems such as the famous parrot beak, ie the structural and functional failure of the intervertebral discs. Therefore these people do not require surgery. IS SURGERY A SOLUTION? The surgical procedure helps pain relief in a shorter term, however, the pain can return after 2-3 years. Thus, it is important that the patient undergoes a specific and detailed professional assessment to identify the problem in a very personalized way. Before opting for surgery, the patient must decide calmly and be sure how best to treat the problem. It is crucial to understand that there is no urgency to operate on a herniated disc or other spinal disease.
8
The patient always has the option of surgery, but it is best to bet on the conservative treatment first. Today, several techniques have advanced and there are effective non-invasive treatments for these diseases. Research has confirmed that surgery is required in only 10% of herniated disc cases, for example. Most are not cured with aggressive therapy. A RMA DA COLUNA VERTEBRAL RMA SPINAL The program developed by ITC Vertebral is a unique, non-surgical method for Reconstruction MuscleArticular Spinal for patients with herniated disc and other spinal injuries. The great advantage of this program is the physiotherapist undertakes all stages of treatment to the time of discharge of the patient and most importantly, track and monitor the patient after treatment, through a permanent maintenance of specific and preventive exercises to avoid recurrences of the treated problems. This means that the patient is monitored throughout the process and then is given exercises to keep the results of the physical therapy and medical treatment. THE 5 STEPS ARE: Manual physiotherapy: Mobilization of joint movements are performed through small hand pulls and slip between the structures and can decrease pain, muscle spasm and swelling, improving, thus, the mobility without stretching the tissues. Electronic traction table: This has a sliding mechanism with springs that control the patient's friction on the table and ensures safe and smooth progression in the application process and tensile load of withdrawal. Table flexion and decompression:
Applies a decompression force associated with bending of the spine at the specific area to be treated. Spinal stabilization: This strengthens the deep muscles of the spine and improves the degree of spinal stability. Finally, after completion of the planned sessions, it is essential to exercise to maintain the benefits of treatment, such as Pilates or weight training. PURELY PORTUGUESE Promoting natural ingredients and handmade processes, the owners of Galeria Côrte-Real in Paderne made a discovery. In northern Portugal an organization of artisans specialising in the production of naturally blended soaps. degree of expertise making soap on a commercial basis. Today it is supplied worldwide to prestige stores such as Liberty of London, Galeries Lafayette in Paris and SAKS Fifth Avenue, New York. Many of these well respected brands are mass produced with much attention being placed on packaging and marketing. In contrast smaller organizations that are reintroducing traditional recipes for making soap rely upon the content of the product. Minimizing the use of chemicals, the purity of each batch of milk – be it from a cow, sheep, goat or donkey – is vital. Likewise all plant materials must be organically grown or
collected from the wild. At Galeria Côrte-Real there is a variety of these unusual soaps, all of them wrapped in quirky packaging that reflect their authentic origins and natural ingredients. I Can you help Europe's premier specialist holiday centre... right here on our doorstep!
www.eastalgarvemag.com
t was June 2013 that we brought you the incredible story of driven Essex businessman Andy Mahoney and his vision to establish a centre for children and young people with special needs to enjoy a holiday abroad with their family. A dream that began back in 2008 has seen a large, run down Quinta near Moncarapacho completely transformed mainly thanks to volunteers and the generosity of donations and sponsors. Centre Algarve is now Europe’s premier specialist holiday centre catering solely for special needs and handicapped children, families with one or more parents that have special needs, as well as school groups or anyone who needs care facilities. Belinda & Tom Willis manage the centre which is now a fabulously welcoming, calm and fun place. The fragrant gardens have matured and the petting zoo has a host of animals including meerkats, exotic birds, a pig, loose goats, chickens and tortoises, some animals donated, others rescued, all however finding a wonderful peaceful home. A group from Witham in Essex were guests when we visited and a BBQ was planned for the evening around the attractive pool and Jacuzzi area. Tom explained, “they welcome school groups of carers and children as more than often they are on very tight budgets and facilities must be available otherwise these trips are simply impossible.” He went on to say, “quite an amazing picture recently were four empty wheelchairs alongside the pool, guests were able
to use the Jacuzzi and pool with the use of the pool hoists, impossible for so many without this.” There is now a fabulous sitting and dining area, a fully equipped kitchen freely available for guests to use enabling them to get involved in baking and cooking for themselves, which can be a lot of fun and a great way to learn. There is a soft play area, therapy room, fully equipped learning centre, breakfast room and lots of open space in the beautifully manicured gardens. The bedrooms are spacious and fully equipped with hoists, full wet rooms, baths or showers and profile beds. Centre Algarve’s has a Quiz night once a month on a Friday and continues to strive to raise essential funds and to offer help to families who simply can’t afford a holiday. Tom explained “We welcome anyone who has the spare time to help out in any way, things always need to be done and help is always much appreciated, the centre thanks everyone who is involved and who has made it happen.” Very many thanks to Andy and Tom and everyone concerned. It was a real pleasure to be invited to see the amazing things achieved, benefiting so many people, through determination and thoughtfulness. A real Gem here in the East Algarve. recent trip to a local olive farm supplied me with the fascinating answers ... Monterosa Olive Plantation is situated on the outskirts of Moncarapacho and guided tours are undertaken in several languages throughout the year. On arrival, we were joined by a small group of visitors who had booked for the short tour on what was a typically hot and sunny Algarve afternoon. On the approach road to the farm, we were met by Sarah our guide, who started the tour by explaining the history of the farm. We then followed
her for a stroll through the olive groves. Walking amongst the trees I had a somewhat reflective moment when I stood next to an olive tree that was thought to have been planted during the Roman occupation of Portugal. Running my hand over the gnarled bark, my mind wandered to ancient times gone by. It seems incredible that this tree has survived over many hundreds of years within a changing world, yet still flourishes in this quiet corner of the Algarve. As we continued our walk, Sarah pointed out the different varieties of

olive trees and she explained how cultivation of the precious olives and subsequent oil production, is undertaken in the modern world and how that process had developed since roman times. Line upon line of trees populated the gently sloping groves. The four varieties of olives have been commercially grown and processed here by the current owners since the 1970's, with ten thousand litres of oil produced annually from each picking. Away from the searing heat, and after showing us the original Roman

olive press, our guide continued the tour in the pressing room. Sarah explained that all the oil produced on the farm was from 'single press' and was therefore in its purest form when it reached the bottle. We were shown the modern equipment that converts the freshly picked olives into uniquely flavoured oils. As well as oil, the plantation produces soap bars which are made by following the original roman recipe. It is totally pure and contains no chemicals or additives. Nothing is wasted at the plantation, with the residue from the press being returned to the groves
as mulch. The oil produced here has a wide following and is exported around the world to the tables of gourmets and those who appreciate a pure and natural product. At the conclusion of our tour, we were invited to sample the four styles of olive oil that are produced here. Each has a different and unique flavour with individual notes and tastes. All tasted very different from those generally available at the supermarket! So good in fact, that before leaving I purchased a bottle of each variety to savour and share with fresh bread

over the next few weeks. A visit here is a great way to learn about the olive oil industry in the area and my thanks go to our guide Sarah for her excellent and informative presentation and explanations. Monterosa plantation is open for tours which are undertaken in various languages throughout the year. No charge is made and the tour lasts for around one and a half hours. Pre-booking is essential. The estate agency Land & Houses Algarve covers the whole of the Algarve! Sales manager Paul Greenhalgh from their Vilamoura office offers advise on how to improve your chance of selling your property.
W
ell the Algarvian summer is officially over, Autumn is here, the tourists have gone home and are now being replaced by our favourite type of people - property hunters. It is that time of year when some home owners make the decision to sell their properties and the time when we encourage our existing vendors to take a moment to look for ways to improve the presentation of their property. First impressions are crucial to anybody who is looking to buy a new home, that is why it is your job to ensure that the property is looking fresh and clean as opposed to dull and uninviting. You do not need to be a DIY expert or a top interior designer to make a real difference to your home. By simply taking the time to put a little effort into presentation, you can vastly improve the perception of your property and beat the current competition in the market. De-Clutter This is the simplest of tasks and yet makes a big difference to your property! Potential buyers want to
www.eastalgarvemag.com
Property view spacious and tidy homes. The idea is to remove any unwanted items out of view by storing them in cupboards or by having a ruthless clear out. Hide those family photos and other items which personalise your property. The viewer needs to put their own stamp on the property and if it is stuffed full of personal objects or family portraits, then they will find it more difficult to imagine this. After all, hanging a large mirror in the hallway is far more effective in creating a good ambience than being greeted by a 5 foot Malayan fertility statue. Finish Odd Jobs Now is the time to stop putting off repairing that leaking tap in the kitchen or the broken terrace tile and do something about it. Get your toolbox out or rope in the help of a friend who can help you with any unfinished tasks. Even simple and inexpensive tasks such as replacing light bulbs can help in the presentation of a property. Eliminate Smells Bad smells and odours are the biggest turn off to any potential
buyer. Certain smells such as cigarette smoke, pet food or mould can linger on fabrics and whilst you may have grown accustomed to them over time, your viewers will not. We live in a country with fantastic weather so take advantage of this and open all windows and doors to air the property thoroughly before any viewing. Another way to prevent bad odours is by cleaning your rugs and curtains, putting fresh bedding on or even preparing a pot of coffee before the viewing takes place. Clean, Clean Clean This is the most important thing you can do to help sell your home. If your property is looking tired and dull, then an intense and rigorous clean can make it appear far more modern and inviting. Many potential buyers find it difficult to see through the dirt and grime of a property, so clean every surface until it shines and scrub those floor and terrace tiles until they gleam. And Finally…. Please let us do our jobs and remember it is always better if the vendor steps out of the property
when the agent arrives with the potential buyer. Purchasers are rarely honest about a property in front of the owners and as agents we need them to be open with us so we can address and solve any issues that arise. Take the opportunity to take your dog for a deserved walk as whilst it is adorable to most, some buyers do not want your excitable Labrador jumping on their clean blue Polo shirt. For further advice and individual assistance on how to make the best of your property please contact our helpful Land and Houses Team on 281 320 280 to make an appointment. Gardening
Moving shrubs and Q When is the best time of year to move trees and shrubs? A Generally, autumn is the best time for moving plants. However, most evergreen shrubs and trees should only be moved when their roots are active; early October or March is best. If you move them late in autumn and the following winter is very cold, dry, or both, then evergreens will be in danger of desiccation and water stress. This is because they retain almost all of their foliage. If evergreens are transplanted during the milder, moister times of the year, then the roots are capable of starting to grow again straight away, while the tops are not in active growth. Deciduous trees and shrubs are less fussy than evergreens. They can be moved any time between November/ March.
32
Q When shouldn’t I move my plants? A Do not move plants if the ground is frozen. Also, if your soil is heavy, your borders are full and your plants are jostling for position. It’s time to be bold and create some space by moving a plant or two, if they get waterlogged in Winter, wait until Spring to move them. Q My shrub is too big. Should it be pruned or moved? A If your plant is taking up a valuable sunny spot, but would do just as well in a more shaded position, move it. You can use the new space for a different, and perhaps more interesting, shrub. Q How likely is it that the move will be a success? A Moving trees and shrubs is not as risky a business as you may think. A Gardening survey found that 70% of readers’ shrubs flourished after moving, while only 10% did poorly.
More than four out of five small trees and conifers also did well. Q How do I know how far the roots of the plant I’m moving will spread? A Tree roots generally spread to about a quarter of their height. The roots of shrubs are usually about the same width as the spread of the older, thicker branches. Q How deep will the roots be? A This depends partly on the kind of soil you have. Roots grow deepest in sandy soil; dig down to about 60cm to get beneath them. Dig to 30cm in clay and 45cm in loam. Plants on thin, chalky soils won’t have many roots growing below 20cm. Bear in mind that a 45cm-deep root ball measuring 90cm across could weigh close to a tonne, so recruit some help! Q How many roots should I try to save in the move?
www.eastalgarvemag.com
1
If the soil around the plant to be moved is dry, give it a good soaking the day before lifting. This will make your job a lot easier. Dig out a new hole for the plant you are moving. It should be about twice the estimated width of the root ball and the same depth. Heap the soil to one side on a plastic sheet. If a stake is required, position this now. Using a spade make a slit around the estimated width of the root ball and use this as a guide to dig out a trench around the root ball. Cut off any horizontal roots you come across, using

trees
A All plants absorb water only through their extremely fine, hair-like roots. When moving a plant, don’t worry about cutting through some woody roots, but save as many of the delicate, fibrous ones as you can. Any disturbance will break them, so be as gentle as possible. Q Do I need a stake? A Tall trees and large evergreens may need to be staked when replanted in a new position. The Forestry Commission advises one short stake, no more than a third the overall height of the tree or shrub. A short stake is enough to hold the roots firm, but allows the tree to flex in the wind and gain strength in the appropriate part of the trunk. A tree’s stem only thickens in response to the natural bending that occurs as it moves in the wind. If it is held rigid, by a long stake for

STEP-BY-STEP TO MOVING SHRUBS AND TREES secateurs or a saw if your spade won’t go through them easily. If the plant you are moving is a small shrub, it should be possible just to push the spade under its root ball at an angle of 45° all the way round, then tunnel underneath. Get the spade right under the roots and slide a piece of heavyduty polythene or sacking underneath. Use a plank to slide the plant out of its old hole, pulling by the plastic or sacking. If the root ball is too heavy to get into a wheelbarrow, either drag it to the new

example, it will not get the stimulus to thicken. Trees with stakes that are too tall are often narrower near the ground than they are above the top tie. If the stake breaks or is removed from trees like this, even after several years, the tree may fall over. The stake should be put in place before the tree itself. After planting, tie the tree to the top of the stake and use a spacer to prevent the tree from rubbing against it. You should check regularly that the tie is not tight or restricting growth. Stakes should only be needed for two or three seasons. Q What about aftercare? A Keep newly moved plants very well watered for the first couple of months after moving. If the roots or the soil around the plant become dry then it will lose water, even if it has no leaves. ROOT-PRUNING With large plants, particularly those with thick, widely spaced roots (eg buddleia, ceanothus, cherries, leyland cypress, pines, pyracantha and robinia), it’s worth root-pruning them a year before they’re moved. Dig out a
site or tie two stout poles to a strong rope, passed diagonally both ways under the root ball. The plant can then be carried in a stretcher-like fashion by two people. Replant at exactly the same depth as the plant was in its previous position. Planting too deep can kill trees and shrubs. Fill in the hole, firming with your foot as you go. Make sure all spaces between the roots are filled. Attach to the stake if one is being used. Water in the plant, and keep it well watered for the first two seasons while it settles in.

trench, as if you were going to move the plant, and cut back the roots. Fill the trench with a mixture of soil and peat or composted bark, plus a few handfuls of bonemeal. Leave the plant for a year to allow it to form new roots nearer the trunk. Water the trench as necessary to keep it moist and remember when it’s time to move the tree that the new root ball will extend to the outside diameter of the trench. If you want to root-prune large trees, more than 5m high, divide the trench into six segments and cut back the roots from every other one in the Autumn; tackle the rest in Spring.

Most theatre-goers in the East Algarve will have seen Els Dietz on stage.
L
ess than two years since she arrived in the Algarve she has worked with two English language theatre groups and appeared in four productions at six different venues; no mean feat when your first language is Dutch and you have many other business commitments. She has found the time to rehearse and perform whilst establishing an ‘Alojamento Local’, in an historic quinta – Casal da Eira in São Brás. Even more remarkably, in between times, she also managed to organise her own wedding. Providing theatricality and drama, her husband-to-be made his proposal on a white horse in the gardens of São Brás Museum! Endowed with huge amounts of energy and talent, Els began her adult life in the Netherlands studying law and later working for the country’s largest telecom provider. Always
combining her professional life with amateur dramatics, she has appeared in a wide variety of serious and comic roles – Toinette in Molière’s ‘Le Malade Imaginaire’, Martirio in Lorca’s ‘The House of Bernard Alba’ and Helena (on roller skates) in a modern interpretation of a ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’. On her arrival in the Algarve she discovered her local theatre group, ‘Aperitivo’, joining the company and playing the part of a Rhine Maiden in Jane Page’s annual winter play and later Miss Wilcox in a humorous murder mystery. To celebrate the centennial year of São Brás Câmara she appeared as a disgruntled cork worker in Carolyn Kain’s epic poem, ‘Rags to Riches’. Currently involved in ‘The Rhyming Diary of Mrs Pepys’ she plays the part of the matriarch and mother of the Charles II. Providing special interest to
a British ex-pat audience, Charles was the bawdy king was famously married the Portuguese princess, Catherine of Bragança. A Review Of The New UK Pension Rules
D
eciding what to do with your pension savings is one of the biggest financial decisions you ever make, because it affects your long-term financial security. The new UK pension rules that came into effect in April give you more choice, but specialist advice is essential. This is particularly true for expatriates, as you need to consider the tax rules and implications in Portugal. Does the new freedom apply to my funds? The new rules apply to those aged 55 and over with defined contribution schemes. They do not apply to defined benefit (final salary) schemes, public sector pensions, state pensions or annuities, though there may be greater flexibility for annuities in future. What are my options under the new rules? In summary, your options are: • Take the whole fund out as cash in one go. • Make withdrawals of any amount as and when you want, leaving the balance invested. • Take regular income through income drawdown. You draw directly from the pension fund, which remains invested. • Take a secure regular income through buying an annuity. If you choose to take all or much of your fund as cash, you should make sure you have a reliable plan for your long-term financial security. What about the 55% ‘death tax’? The 55% tax charge has been abolished. If you die after age 75, and your beneficiaries take a regular income, it will be taxed

UK taxpayers receive 25% tax free, with other income/withdrawals taxed at their marginal rate of income tax. It is essential for expatriates to consider the local tax implications for their pension options. In Portugal taxation depends on the type of pension you have. The local tax regime can provide tax advantages though, in certain circumstances. This is a complex area and getting it wrong can have serious consequences. here have been many influencing factors in September to affect the exchange rate, some we expect and others that aren’t so obvious. We had the Bank of England and the Federal reserve bank both making the decision to keep interest rates on hold, great for those who wish to lend, but not so good for the savers. The Greek elections played a key role again with the Syriza party being elected, we saw the Euro weaken at this time, as the Government is not overly popular with other leaders in Europe. So has this brought some stability to Greece and the Euro? I would say not; and with the Migrant crisis intensifying we could see this weighing heavily on Europe. Mario Draghi in his ECB meeting at the back end of the month concluded that the Eurozone economy is looking in a
reasonable state and that he is happy with how the Greek crisis sorted itself out in recent weeks. This gave some strength back to the Euro, but this could be short lived. As later on in September we saw Volkswagen open to fines of billions due to manipulating emissions testing, this caused a steep fall in the value of car stocks across Germany, whether the ECB will step in to increase their Quantative easing program to support the economy, which could weaken the Euro only time will tell, it could be one to watch out for. Over this month the GBP/EUR has fluctuated from 1.35 to over 1.38, and down again and after all that we see in the news, whether it be elections or even the migrant crisis, the economic data that

5 Things You Should Know About Capital Gains Tax
A
capital gain occurs when you sell something for more than you spent to acquire it. This happens a lot with investments, but it applies to personal property too. Are you planning to sell your home? Find out what tax you will have to pay and how to reduce this liability. YOU CAN’T HIDE FROM THE TAX DEPARTMENT Any property transaction performed in Portugal must be reported to the Tax Authorities by the notary that executes the deed. This means that when you declare the sale on your tax return, the tax authorities already know of it, so if you fail to include this on your declaration, the taxman will be after you. IT’S MANDATORY TO FILE A TAX RETURN EVERY TIME YOU SELL A PORTUGUESE PROPERTY Irrespective of your tax domicile, if you sell a property located in Portugal, this means that you need to declare it in your tax return in Portugal. Regardless if there was a gain or not, it’s mandatory to make this declaration, which happens normally in May of the year following the sale. DECLARING THE SALE DOESN’T MEAN YOU NEED TO PAY TAX
You only pay tax, if you made a gain on the transaction. So if you sell something for more than the purchase price, then the difference is a capital gain and that is reported on your taxes. However please note that the value you paid for the property needs to be updated, which means that this value will in most cases increase for the capital gains calculation. Also, some expenses will be included in the tax return and deducted from any gain obtained. IN WHICH CASES YOUR SALE IS TAX EXEMPT It is possible to be exempt from tax in certain situations. For example if the property was acquired prior to 1989, it’s not liable to any CGT. Nevertheless, taxpayers will still have to declare these operations. But this is not the only tax exemption on capital gains from the sale of a property. The law provides, for example, that if you use the full amount of the sale of a property to buy another home (for own and permanent housing), to build a home or purchase of land intended for the construction, you don’t pay tax on capital gains. Please note that this reinvestment of the gains, needs to happen within 36 months and can be done in any EU country.
EXPENSES ALLOWED TO DEDUCT YOUR CAPITAL GAINS From the sale of your property you can deduct, the costs incurred with the purchase operation and sale of the property (eg IMT and registers on the purchase, real estate commission on the sale, etc). Taxpayers can also deduct costs incurred in property over the past five years, such as property refurbishments or other money spent to increase the value of the asset, including the cost of the energy certification. Even if you don't plan to sell your home for now, it is important that you keep all supporting charges and make sure invoices include your name and fiscal number and very important: the correct address of the property. The repayment of mortgage loans and purchase costs, will also be taken into consideration, when calculating the tax return. It’s important that you plan ahead, as you can’t afford any tax surprises. Please feel free to visit us for a friendly chat and ask us for a capital gain tax simulation on your property. If you fear that you may be liable for a big capital gain tax bill, then let’s study your case, we may find a way of substantially reduce this tax burden.

lhanense were drawn against non-league Almancilense, who fielded five former Olhanense players, in the 2nd round of the Portugal Cup. The game was played on the synthetic pitch at the picturesque small town of Salir nestling in the foothills north of Loulé . Manager Cristiano Bacci rested five players but gave a start to the returning French central defender Jean Coubronne. The game was won in the five minutes before the interval when firstly Murilo slotted home a penalty and then José Coelho struck a sweet free-kick that gave the home keeper no chance. The third round draw could see Olhanense pick up a plum draw against one of the big Primeira Liga teams - FC Porto, Benfica or Sporting Lisbon - which would automatically result in the game being played in Olhão (see following article). In the league it was a month of mixed fortunes with a 3-1 defeat away to Varzim, a dire 0-0 draw at home to Aves and three valuable points from the 2-0 home win over bottom club Oliveirense.

ittle did those who turned up in Olhão for the first session of Walking Football, for the over 50s, twelve months ago imagine that they would have been the trailblazers for a sport that has spawned three other groups in the Algarve. Walking Football is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle despite their age, as well as getting those back playing football who had to stop due to injuries. Brian Kilcline, captain of Coventry City FC when they won the FA Cup in 1987, joined the group several months ago and has helped with training the mature sportsmen. Brian said, “I’ve seen a vast improvement in the quality of play and even those who had no previous experience of soccer have mastered basic skills and are enjoying the game.” On the 9th/10th October a major tournament takes place at Browns Sports & Leisure Club, Vilamoura. Three teams from the Soccer Olhanense Strollers will pit their skills against teams from Scotland, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, West Midlands, Vilamoura and Lagos. Last week, following their regular Thursday morning session at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão, the Soccer Olhanense Strollers and support staff toasted the success of the club with a glass of bubbly before cutting the cake.

here was a party atmosphere as thousands of Irish invaded the Algarve Stadium for their EURO 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar. Robbie Keane took his international goals tally to 67 with a double strike in the the 7-0 win over the battling parttimers from The Rock. The victory, coupled with Scotland’s 1-0 defeat by Georgia, saw Ireland leapfrog Gordon Strachan’s side in the table and rekindled their hopes of clinching a play-off spot for next summer’s finals in France. he first of JK Rowlings books, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was partly written in Portugal some twenty-five years ago. In the book Harry was tormented by the dysfunctional Dursley family who must now have come out of hiding to organise the draw for the Portugal Cup! The annual knockout competition, the equivalent of the English FA Cup, started a month ago when 108 teams competed in the first round. This season the wizards at the Portuguese Football Association (FPF) came up with the bright idea of giving 14 of the 59 first-round losers a second chance. Those lucky to be drawn out of the Sorting Hat included 9-0 losers Amiense, (Santarém) who entertained Portimonense in the second round. To add further sorcery to the brew it was decreed that teams drawn away to opposition from a higher league would have the tie reversed. So it was that all the 2nd Division teams played away. Incidentally the winners of the Portugal Cup pick-up a cheque for €300,000, whereas the FA Cup final winners will bank €2.45m

Blow-round-look-thirty!
This months article from Keith Ashdown, head professional at Benamor golf.

R
ecently I have been teaching a golfer on the golf course who at the age of sixty nine has decided to see if he can play golf decently. Although he has owned a set of golf clubs for years, he has not been on a course many times. This is a departure point. Now this particular golfer (I imagine his medical advisor suggested he should take some more exercise) is not interested in hitting balls on the driving range, he wants to get out on the course. So the problem is to get him to observe all the essential rules of the good golf swing without suffocating him with advice. My pupil, an intelligent, reasoning person, soon began to evolve for himself a series of slogans, as he called them. From my advice, and to help him perform the "Rites" he condenced them. This seemed very practical to me and I must say in some degree original, because I had not previously put these condensed slogans to my pupils. My immediate problem was to make his swing more business like, to get some violence into the action, the usual right shoulder intervention in

an effort to increase the power of the blow caused the inevitable head-up, so "Look at the ball" was ordered. This golfer, stocky, powerful and thick necked had already aquired this habit of taking a deep breath before starting a back swing which caused tension and made the elbows separate. To play well the air must always be expelled from the lungs before begining the back swing, so I tried to teach him to empty his lungs and to blow out the air. "Whistle", I said or "Blow like whale", he got this idea readily, but the point was to remember it along with all the other things. Relaxation at the address was ordered. The arc of his swing was too upright, the club went too straight back from the ball and so his pivot was limited. The immediate correction of this was to swing around the body. A flatter swing was ordered. When this going round the body began to work it was noticed that the club continued round the body on the follow through - it did not want to go towards the hole, even for the essential foot or 30cm after impact. Throw the clubhead towards the target was ordered. These were the four keys at the
moment to a succesful shot, when they could all be remembered!! Not long after, I was intrigued to hear my pupil saying on the tee: Blow - Round - Look - Thirty! He had condensed my advice into single word slogans which appealed to him so that he could remember better what to do for every shot. This idea of my pupil was brilliant, it certainly worked for him. It does not mean either, that these slogans as he calls them will necessarily be the operative ones for a long time - he will need to add or substitute others - but four seems about the right number, not too many, not too few. My pupil is still making progress, his blow - round - look - thirty is operating, blow to remind himself to empty his lungs, round to remind himself to swing the club around his body (pivot), look to remind himself to send the clubhead straight through to the hole after impact for 30cm. These slogans are personal, but on saying them to myself it makes me, as I write, think that they might work for lots of other people too. Good golfing Keith
