... to your October issue. The summer is officially over and Autumn is settling in nicely with pleasantly warm days and cooler nights. This month we focus on Moncarapacho which is steeped in history and legends, we spent some time talking to the curator of the ancient artifacts in the museum. We have more golf tips this month from Quinta da Ria, and our recipe of prawns and codfish is supplied by the stunning Panaoramic restaurant. Our regular contributors bring you useful financial, environment and health advice, and we feature the first of a two part article about growing roses. This month’s book reviews describe the intriguing birds of the mediterranean, whether an avid bird watcher or if you’ve ever wondered what bird had just swooped past you, these books are an essential guide.

Dear East Algarve Magazine, Having just spent 12 days at our holiday home in Spain, and visiting the lovely surrounding areas, we always head for Manta Rota. It’s so nice clean friendly and has a nice buzz about it. But on our last visit (Sunday 6th Sept) we headed down to the beach like most of Portugal it seems! I’ve never seen it so busy. Carrying our sunshade loungers and cool box, but it was nigh on impossible to get a space without walking back to Tavira along the beach! Most of the beach is taken up with designated pay parasols and sun beds, even the life guards are forced to use the same spot as everyone else, along with boat hire jet ski hire! What happened to the beach belonging to the public and locals, who have no intention of paying for sun bed hire and a spot on the beach (and why should they) the beach is a way of life in these resorts and a family gathering, not a money making exercise. Ken Thomas.

Dear East Algarve Magazine, I own a classic car and I am looking for a local meet or club where I can show my car and get together with other enthuisiasts. Please ask if there are any classic car buffs out there interested in meeting up. Frederick, Tavira Dear Frederick, Great idea. There is a boot fair held at Quinta Fonte do Bispo on the fourth Sunday of the month (the next is on the 28th November). If there are enough people interested, we can organise a show area to be set aside. So if there are any vehicle owners who would like to bring along, and show off their pride and joy, please contact us on 961 700 200
We’d love to hear from you if you have any comments or suggestions either about the East Algarve Magazine, or anything else you’d like to share with our readers. People are always looking for new places to eat or drink, so if you have a favorite restaurant or bar, why not let others know about it. Likewise, if you know of anyone offering a particularly good service, let us know!
Dear East Algarve Magazine, I wanted to write to you to express my gratitude for pointing me in the direction of the QM garden centre. My husband and I decided to take a drive over there to be nosey really, and we were very pleasently surprised. The owners and staff were so friendly and helpful. I was amazed by the variety of stock in the kitchen shop and even more amazed by the Aladdin’s cave of essential items and gifts in the rest of the shop, not to mention the well priced plants. I was then given a cup of tea and a homemade slice of cake whilst sitting in the gardens chatting with other visitors. I will definately be making this a regular trip and wish all my shopping excursions were this relaxed. Thank you! Rosemary VilaStevens,Real Dear East Algarve Magazine, Help! I have a bored six year old son who desperately wants to join a weekend football club. Does anyone know of one which is taking on new players?

A recent report by the Market Study Catalogue from the Real Estate Professionals and Business Association has shown a rise in people looking to rent against potential purchasers. Unfortunately there are not enough rental properties available nationally. Luis Lima, president of the APEMIP at the opening of the property show in Lisbon said “People are looking to rent as they don’t have any other option after the banks have created obstacles to obtaining credit.” Although these are national figures, according to a local property management company specializing in long term rentals there is also a slight increase in people in our region looking to rent long term.

Next year the regional ‘Allgarve’ summer entertainment programme could benefit from an estimated €3 million budget, should the new Government give its approval says Nuno Aires, head of the regional Algarve Tourism Board (ERTA). The current programme was spread over six months and was granted a huge budget of €4 million. The guarantee of another three year stint will remain unconfirmed until after the upcoming legislative elections as the new Government “could change things”, said Nuno EventsAires. scheduled this year under the ‘Allgarve’ programme is the ‘Portugal Masters’ golf tournament in Vilamoura, from October 15th to 18th, and the ‘Superbike World Championship’, in Portimão, from October 23rd to 25th. Ithink summer is finally over. Al though we’re still having beautifully sunny skies, it feels fresh enough in the mornings and evenings that I can imagine going for a nice walk out in the Asseca, watching the cane waving in the breeze, spying the bunnies before they hie off into the brush along the side of the road, and wondering, for the umpteenth time, what is that buff colored bird with the black and white tail feathers? So I’m here in the shop and it oc curs to me that I sell several nice bird guides and all I have to do is pull one or two of them off the shelf and I’ll have the answer... “Birds of the Mediterranean” by Paul Sterry is a photographic guide with clear and colorful images in remarkable detail, with brief but thorough descriptions of every bird you’ll see in the Algarve. He tells me that the exotic creature is a Eurasian Hoopoe and it hangs out in vineyards and orchards, foraging, in furrows and other low spots, for Okay, worms.so now I’ll look in the Collins “Bird Guide”, by Lars Svensson and Peter Grant, and see what they have to say. Right off I see that instead of photographs, the authors use il lustrations by Killian Mullarney and Dan Zetterstrom, and I can appreci ate the advantage of these delicate renderings...many of the birds are depicted at rest and in flight, some times including a small detailed sketch of a particular physical char acterisic. Both books agree about habitat, but when it comes to flight pattern Mr. Svensson is more giving than Mr. Sperry, who says only that the Hoopoe’s flight is “...slow, but terfly-like”. Lars, on the other hand, states that “flight flappy and rather unsteady with short undulations, hint of gliding and uneven rhythm, often low over ground.” Both books are wonderful guides whether you’re an avid birder or, like me, just curious about those crea tures with the distinctive plumage or the stick-like legs I see wading in the river at low tide on my way in to town each morning. Several cus tomers have given me enthusiastic feedback on each and I recommend both without qualification. Come in and see if you don’t want to add one (or both!) of these beautiful nature books to your collection. If you say that you saw this article I’ll even de duct %10 from the price. I hope to see you soon.

The Pedras Lawn Bowls Club cur rently consists of 40 members, and is administered by Snr. Pires, his staff, and club members. Play ers can play unresricted bowls on any day of the week, and hold their club practice days on Tuesdays, Fri days and Sunday mornings all year round. A member of Bowls Algarve, the club competes against 6 other bowls clubs across the Algarve. Competitions secretary John Mar shall explains; “We try to hold regular social events such as dinner dances etc., to encourage members to meet and get to know each other. Our ob jectives include the promotion of bowling in a friendly and competi tive environment. Also high on our agenda is to encourage all nationali ties to discover the huge amount of fun bowling can be, particularly the Portuguese community”. The other beauty of the game is that there’s no restriction on age, in fact member No.1 is a spritely 83 years Forold. people thinking of taking up bowls, I can certainly vouch for the friendly atmosphere on the green. While I was taking photographs for this feature, players seemed to be enjoying themselves very much, en couraging each other and generally enjoying themselves. New comers are given a very warm welcome, and made to feel at home. There are lessons available for be ginners, and both bowls and shoes can be hired at the club Within the next few weeks, the new club house will be open during the day and also the evenings, offering bar facilites and snacks. Bowling is just one of the many facil ities available at Pedras da Rainha. There are a number of excellent Tennis courts and also Padel Ten nis courts, a very popular game in Spain, sort of a cross between Ten nis and Squash. The Algarves newest bowling green at Pedras da Rainha, Cabanas, is destined to be the best in the region.
byWritten BassettRichard Director of Pedras da Rainha, António Almeida Pires had a very clear goal when he de cided to build the new bowl ing green; simply to offer the best bowling facilities the Algarve has to offer. At a cost of over €100,000, the green is made of 100% natural grass, and is maintained by dedi cated expert gardeners.

Getting back to your therapy, what is the best result you have had with a client? Someone with Parkinsons disease who after treatment has been able to play golf again and has found a new lease of life. He comes to me here from Wales for a treatment. How many treatments do you recommend? Three, then reassess where needed. What do you charge for a treatment? €40.00 Where can people have the treatment? At my home clinic in Almargens, São Brás de Alportel. But I am also look ing for other facilities. What’s your telephone number please? 289 841 857 Thank you Lesley for meeting with me and for the insight into what you do. I found the treatment ex tremely relaxing and energising and know you picked up on things from me without knowing anything about me. I have tremendous respect for that talent and know you will do well here.
Ihave had the great pleasure in meeting and experiencing the treatment Lesley Davies offers here on the Algarve, Reconnection Healing. I must admit I was kind of sceptical about this kind of treat ment, despite my understanding and experience with the power of heal ing and energies and ‘things’ people think are just a bit too weird. BUT, I was amazed at how I responded to this and how I will definitely be going back as a paying customer, to finish off some unfinished business. I hope you enjoy this insight and make con tact with Lesley and look closer into Reconnection Healing. What do you practice here in the Algarve? Reconnection Healing. I have never heard of that, what is it? It reconnects us to the fullness of the universe as it reconnects us to the fullness of our beings and of who we are. OK…! Tell me 5 things you can treat well with this therapy. 1 Emotional Problems 2 Deep levels of unhappiness and grief 3 Relief from pain 4 Self development 5 When you appear to have every thing but there is something fundamental missing in your life. How long have you lived here? We bought and moved to our farm here 1 year ago, it is an amazing part of the countryside. It has some of the cleanest air in Europe. How long have you been practicing healing therapies? 17 years. What is your health tip of the day? Smile! A smile has the power to make someone else’s day as well as your own. What is the last thing you ate? Our own chickens eggs and beans from a tin, I was really hungry! What’s around the corner? I would like to help as many people as I can find happiness in their lives and teach spirituality based on un conditional love for ourselves and one another. Do you practice what you preach? Absolutely yes (confirmed by a nod of agreement from husband Lyndon) What celebrity would you like to treat? Robbie Williams, because he could be so happy, he’s just lost sight of who he is at the deepest level of be ing. Where did you last go on holiday? The Algarve. Rugby or football? 2 pints of Stella if I have to watch the rugby, but I’d rather table tennis! What’s your favourite restaurant in the East Algarve? O Cantinho at Bern Parece, above Santa Catarina. Do you order from the Cosmos or Amazon.co.uk? The Cosmos of course, it’s cheaper!

In the typical streets of this part of the Algarve, you can admire a few buildings characteristic of the bour geois architecture from the 19th century. Various chapels illustrate the rural architecture. The chapels of Pé da Cruz, of São Francisco, of Nossa Senhora do Carmo and, specially, of São Miguel, built on heights, offer excellent views of the surrounding green landscape. At the Cerro da Cabeça (Hill of the Head), where you will find the hid den caves, is also an excellent natu ral belvedere, and a place of interest for those who appreciate speleol ogy. It is worth the gentle climb, with the knowledge that a stunning view awaits Amongyou.the many cafes and restau rants in this area, Restaurant Co libri’s is a local favourite, offering local specialities at very reasonable prices. Restaurant A Caravela spe cialise in fresh, locally caught fish, and excellent chicken dishes. New owners Luis and Larissa recently relocated from Luz de Tavira to run this restaurant, and now offer a pop ular take-away service (see their ad on the right for contact details and Ifmap).you are in the area, we’d definately recommend a stroll around Moncar apacho. Sit and enjoy a coffee, and the friendly village atmosphere will simply charm you.

European demand for broadband internet access is at its highest level ever. Currently some 20 million homes across Europe cannot access ADSL or cable networks and this will only decrease to 15 million homes by Tooway2010.™ Satellite Broadband can be the answer and is fast becoming the affordable option for homes and Satellitebusinesses.broadband is Internet connectivity provided by satellite, rather than dial-up, DSL (digital subscriber line) or cable service. HOW IT WORKS Tooway™ connects homes via satellite at up to 30 times faster than a standard dial-up connection. A small satellite dish and a Tooway™ modem are all that’s required. Clients using 2-way Satellite Internet service connect to the internet via an Earth Station consisting of a parabolic microwave antenna -- a satellite dish with receiving and transmitting capabilities. The earth station sends and receives signals to a satellite in geostationary orbit around the Earth. The satellite communicates with another earth station which is connected to the Internet. 2-way satellite communication means no other terrestrial links are required -no phone line needed. Because the connection is permanent, E-mail will arrive straight in your inbox and you will never get a ‘busy signal’ when trying to connect. A t a time when governments in Northern Europe start dealing with the financial fallout of the crisis by making preparations for the coming years to reduce budget deficits by increasing taxes, reducing government expenditure and subsidies and working on proposals to increase the age of retirement – a political and social controversial issue-, it offers an opportunity to highlight one of the more positive aspects of being a resident in Portugal, the inheritance tax. Inheritance tax is a tax on both lifetime gifts and assets passing on death. Most people believe it is unfair to be taxed on inheritance as it has already been subject to tax several times. High net worth individuals have always found ways to protect their Estate. Hence why offshore trusts and holding companies have been popular as well as being a resident of Monaco and Guernsey, to name a few. However, you don’t have to be ultra rich to efficiently protect your assets from inheritance tax. Since January 1st 2004 Portugal has abolished inheritance tax for close family members (spouse, children, grandchildren, parents and grandparents). You are considered a resident in Portugal if you are staying in excess

As a result you are subject to taxation on your worldwide income, capital gains and inheritances. There are of course other matters to consider before making your move. Health care is one of them. In addition to the advantage of being able to communicate in your own language, some consider (subjective) their own national healthcare system to be superior. This may change as further health care reform is needed due to the rapid ageing of northern Europe’s population. Past reductions in health care expenditure are already leading to longer waiting lists for those in need of treatment in some countries. In addition, one can expect more exclusions of treatments previously covered by national healthcare systems. As this perceived gap in the quality of care is narrowing, it makes the decision to choose for a permanent residency abroad easier. If you are living in Northern Europe, are retired or have a profession you can exercise from anywhere in the World, be aware you have a choice. At a time of increasing taxes, don’t get mad, get even. Prior to moving abroad, it is advisable to seek advice of a tax consultant with a good understanding of both jurisdictions. The Algarve is a great place to stay, a better place to live.

It’s been two years since Manorpark Properties opened its office in the centre of Olhão, and the market has changed quite considerably during that time. Despite this, Manorpark’s enthusiastic and multi-lingual team have weathered the storm and are ready to assist in whatever your property needs are, sharing with you the many advantages and hidden facets of this up-and-coming area. When the Olhão office opened, the town had just presented its renovation programme with 30 hectares of land being regenerated. Anyone familiar with the area will have seen the opening of the new Ria Shopping Centre, the Municipal Auditorium and of course the frontline development overlooking the Ria Formosa. Many have already invested in these off-plan objects with a view to using them as a holiday home or a ‘buy to let’ option. Due to its location, the office is easily able to cover areas such as Tavira, Moncarapacho, São Brás de Alportel, Faro and all their neighbouring areas. The East Algarve still have the most competitive prices compared to the more established tourist areas of the Algarve. Renovation projects are still very popular, those who have already done it with a view to renting out as holiday lets have done so very successfully. They believe that the East Algarve still has plenty of potential buyers, especially with people looking for interesting, less developed locations where money can be invested. Manorpark Properties have been busy forging relationships with Agents outside the Algarve, particularly in Northern Europe where buyers have not been so affected by the current economic crisis. With the property market now showing the shoots of recovery, i.e. properties are actually being sold again, Manorpark Properties are keen to build on our portfolio of new listings. If you are in the market to sell your property, please email your details to olhao@manor-park.com or call us on 289 722 780. You can also visit our web-site: www.manor-park.com

How replacetoabrokentile?
Due to the warm climate we enjoy here in the Algarve, a popular choice of flooring is tiling. Of course we also have wall tiles, and although usually quite durable can be damaged surprisingly easily. Here’s our simple guide to replacing a broken tile. Replacement of floor and wall tiles is similar. Remove the grout from around the tile(s) you want to replace... If you try to remove the tile without removing all of the grout first, there is a chance that the adjacent tiles will Ifchip.the grout is a soft, unsanded wall grout, you can scratch it out with a kitchen knife, being careful not to slip and scratch adjacent tiles. DON’T FORGET TO SAVE A SAMPLE OF THE GROUT TO TAKE TO THE STORE FOR A COLOR MATCH!! Remove the broken tile... If the broken tile is loose, simply lift it out and go on the the next step. For floor tiles, tap on the edge of the tile, using a hammer and a small cold chisel or other suitable tool. Do not touch any of the adjacent tile, because you may loosen or chip them. A few carefully placed whacks may loosen a tile set in mortar. If the tile is set in adhesive, as are most wall tiles, or well adhered to the mortar, every piece of the tile is going to fight you during the removal process. You will probably do some damage to the floor or wall underneath the tile during removal, but it is of little consequence once you install the new tile. Prepare the hole and set the replacement tile... Vacuum out all debris, and scrape out any lumps or bumps in the mortar or adhesive. Test fit the new tile to make sure it sits firmly without excessive rocking, and doesn’t sit higher than the other tiles. Scrape out more remaining adhesive/mortar if Applynecessary.a1/8” layer of adhesive to the back of the tile with a putty knife. It is not necessary to use a special grooved tile adhesive applicator for a small repair such as this. Do not apply the adhesive closer than a half-inch to the edge of the tile. You don’t want the stuff to squeeze out into the area between the tiles when you place it. Just more of a mess to clean up later! Press the tile into its place with a slight wiggling motion, which will spread the adhesive and assure a good bond. Let the adhesive dry for 24 hours and apply matching grout... If any more than a slight amount of adhesive squeezed out between the tiles in the last step, use a utility knife or a thin screwdriver and scrape as much of it out as you can. Mix the grout per instructions on the Alabel.damp sponge and/or fingers are a great combination for pushing the grout into the cracks! The grout, being a cement product, will tend to beat up the hands, so if you are the delicate sort, wear good fitting rubber or latex gloves. A damaged wall or floor tile doesn’t mean a whole new floor or a re-tiled tileReplacingbathroom.abrokeniseasierthanyoumaythink.

Here we discuss the relative value of Silver versus Gold, just to give you a basis for judging our position: Page 24 info@eastalgarvemag.com Eastalgarve_Issue10.indd 24 2/10/09 11:44:40
THE PHYSICAL GOLD/SILVER RATIO One factor determining the gold/ silver value ratio is the physical ratio in the earth’s crust. According to AGI Data Sheet 57.1, “Abundance of Elements,” on average silver occurs at 0.07 parts per million, and gold at 0.004 parts per million in the earth’s crust. Thus the naturally occurring ratio is 17.5:1 which is not far from the last monetary ratio of 16:1 which was set when both gold and silver were still universal money in the last century. Remember, year by year industry consumes silver, while most of the gold ever mined still sits in a vault (or hangs around a neck) someplace.Historically the Gold/Silver ratio (how many ounces of Silver can buy one ounce of Gold) ranged from a low of 2.5 to 1 to a high of 16:1, and never rose above 12:1 until after 1500 AD. For most of human history, a band from 8:1 to 12:1 has contained the

From 1873 until 1941 the ratio rose until it hit 100:1 for the first time in history. With numerous zigs and zags, the ratio hit a low in 1980 below 16:1 again. What is it now: Gold is $990, Silver is $16 which gives us a ratio of 61.875 which is three and a half times higher than its historical value of 18. So, bang for the buck, what do you go for? My bet would be Silver in the short term, until this ratio gets to near 20 and than switch most of it to Gold. Some Investment Banks currently predict that Gold will reach $2,000 per ounce within two years which suggests that the price of Silver will reach $111 per ounce in the same time-frame. A 100% rise in Gold will beget a 600% rise in Silver. So for those of us with significant exposure to Fiat currencies, US$ and UK£ in particular, it may be prudent to consider the purchase of some “white precious metals”, bearing in mind that the above factors apply to Platinum and Palladium as well. Consider the following news: Power shift: G8 influence flows to the G20 World leaders trumpet new global economic as old industrialized elites cede influence to fast-growing developing powers - Campbell ClarkWhile developing countries such as China and India (Ed: Strong Gold Lovers) have long argued for a bigger say in the economic councils of the world, it took the global financial meltdown to persuade the United States and other rich nations that they cannot go it alone.

Yes, of course, the moon is the major contributor to tidal movement in the oceans and the rise and fall of the waves can deliver massive resources of power. You’ve seen pictures of waves throwing 1,000 ton vessels about. Tidal wave energy, ocean energy and other forms of wave power technologies are becoming increasingly popular as potential sources of alternative energy. Today we take a look at the Swell Fuel “Lever Operated Pivoting Float” electricity generating buoys with our wave energy converters are available in 1000 watt and 5000 watt sizes. This system is used to generate electricity that is sent to shore via marine grade electrical cable or used to supply power to marine based electrical equipment. We were thinking that a 5kW energy source floating around would be a godsend to the many yachts and cruisers in the region. We’d like to hear your ideas about similar systems and their use. (The Swell Fuel “Lever Operated Pivoting Float” electricity generating buoy is not a Coast Guard approved device and is not intended for use on commercial waterways) Ocean Energy Converters Generate Electricity using Moon Power! Cynic’s Corner
Beginning in 2009, in a stunning about-face, the central government removed all restrictions and is actively pushing folks to buy precious metals and letting the public know just how easy it is to purchase Gold and Silver as an investment. Why? In my opinion, China believes that there is going to be a major upset in the current world financial system which will remove the US$ as the Reserve Currency. Many commodities can only be purchased internationally using US$. The US (and the UK£ by the way) has abused this powerful fact to print more $ than the balance of trade can systemically support and the Chinese believe that the value of the $ will be inflated away to reduce the incurred debts. China’s central bank reserves are overloaded with US$ which are at risk of collapsing in value. What to do? I can envisage a situation not too far down the road where the value of the dollar crashes and the westerners holding them can’t repay their already burdensome debt. On the other hand, even a Chinese Peasant holding 1 ounce of re-valued Precious Metals and with zero debt will find that they are relatively rich. Boot.......Foot!!! This will boost internal trade within China so that they are not dependent on the USA buying their products. QED. If the 20th Century belonged to the USA, then the 21st Century appears to be heading for China.

China saw countries and their citizens all loaded with debt and secretly fortified their reserves with commodities, and now she is subtly protecting her citizens. As China urges her citizens to buy Gold and Silver, we look at the underlying fundamentals: As recently as 2002, the private ownership of gold was prohibited in China. You could be jailed if caught with any in your possession.
Quantitative Easing!!! What in the world does that mean; we read it everywhere. It’s Banker speak for Printing more money out of thin air. Jim Sinclair says that we are in the age of MOPE (Management Of Perspective Eco nomics). Now that I understand – it means that the Cen tral Banks have tried every tool that they have and they failed; now they have to resort to lying. Green shoots, No!! I say “No green shoots without Gold Roots”. Well this is your platform for voicing your opinion, so send your diatribe to rebasse@aol.com for inclusion in this section.

TYPES OF ROSES Floribunda Make any landscape designs stand out with the most colourful of rose types. Developed during the last century, these bushy shrubs have the large, showy blossoms of the hybrid teas, but bloom more freely, setting clusters of three to fifteen blossoms rather than a single bloom on a stem. Floribundas are versatile; an individual shrub will fit easily into almost any sunny border planting. However, they are perhaps most striking in mass plantings. Hybrid Tea One of the most popular rose types, these are tall, long-stemmed roses ideal for cutting--the roses you usually see at the florist. The flowers are usually borne singly, one to a stem, rather than in clusters. Blooms have a high-center point. In the garden they are often featured as single specimens or in a traditional rose cutting garden. Many varieties reveal a beautiful rose fragrance Grandiflora A grandiflora is a cross between a floribunda and a hybrid tea. Grandifloras are tall elegant plants which bloom repeatedly during the season, and generally feature classic hybrid tea flower clusters with stems which are slightly shorter than those Traditionally thought of as a very English plant, with the right choice and care we all can enjoy the beauty of roses. Ryouroses
Hot, hazy and humid describes much of the year in this region, where roses commence their first peak of bloom by Mother’s Day, then continue budding out and blooming through December, and while most of the rain comes during winter and early spring occasional thunderstorms can be seen in summer. The soil may be acidic or sandy: amending with lime helps balance the pH, while compost provides nutrients and improves drainage. The best roses are heat tolerant and resist black spot: new roses often offer improved repeat blooming as well. Growing roses requires no gardening skills or experience. Essentially, there are three easy steps: 1 Choose the right rose for your space 2 Plant your rose where it will get at least six hours of sun each day 3 Water regularly Voila - your roses are off to a healthy start. Here are more details to ensure a summer full of rose blooms.

Tree Roses Tree roses are made up of a hardy root stock grafted to a long stem that is, in turn, grafted to a rose bush at the top of the stem. They are very elegant lining a walkway or as a feature amongst other plantings. The tree rose is a lovely addition to the garden, but extra rose care is needed to insure its survival over Nowwinter.you hopefully know a bit more about the different types of roses, next month we’ll talk about planting and caring for roses. 7th 2009 - 3.00pm Bispo

This rose grows up to six feet tall. Shrub & Landscape These roses have changed the way many people view roses. Shrub roses, especially when compared with traditional varieties, are impressive for many reasons: their natural disease-resistance, their willingness to grow in a variety of climates with a minimum of attention from the gardener, their compact growth habit (very little pruning required), not to mention the great beauty of their flowers, which are borne consistently over a very long Comingseason. in all shapes and sizes, shrub and landscape roses work well in any landscape. Landscape roses grow close to the ground, like ground cover, and have a very spreading habit. Climber Climbing roses help dress up any garden. They produce long, arching canes with numerous flowers that can be trained to a trellis, fence, or other supporting structure. Grow them up and over an arching trellis to make a striking entryway; train them up a lattice to adorn a plain wall. Miniature Perfection on this scale can’t fail to captivate! Miniature roses are the smallest of rose plants, growing anywhere from six inches to two feet tall. This rose type is hardy, flowers continuously and is perfect for container rose gardening, make lovely borders, and solve the space problem for those with a small yard or balcony. Miniatures are grown on their own root.

The following week fans starting arriving at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão three hours before kick-off to soak up the atmosphere as Olhanense prepared to entertain Acadé mica from Coimbra. Little did they realise what was in store for them!. Midfield dynamo Castro opened the scoring for the home side after just 60 seconds. Eight minutes later their joy turned to despondency as the home side was reduced to 10 men when Carlos Fernandes was sent-off. Acadé mica drew level midway through the first half. Ukra then weaved his way into the box and set-up Toy to give Olhanense a 21 lead. On the hour mark there was further disbelief for Olhanense supporters when Rui Baião was dismissed for an innocuous challenge. Down to nine men the team were roared on by the crowd of over 5,000. With the final whistle fast approaching the ground reverberated to a frenzy of singing & chanting that would not have been out of place at the ‘Last Night of the Proms’!

As half-time approached referee Rui Costa awarded Sporting a penalty for handball against Anselmo much to the amazement of everyone in the ground. Sporting Braga came to Olhão with a 100% record and when Olhanense goalkeeper Ventura was sent off a minute before the interval it looked like curtains for the home side. Tavira born Bruno Verissimo came on for his first start of this season and saw the resulting penalty sail over the bar. Once again the home side battled tirelessly as Jorge Costa’s young team repelled Braga’s attacks but with virtually the last kick of the game Alan scored to give Braga an undeserved victory.
