Blue crab from the US spotted in Guardiana estuary
he Guardiana river, marking the lower border area between Portugal and Spain, is hosting a new visitor, a blue crab, found in the estuary in June, has been identified. Researchers from the Centre for Marine Sciences confirmed the visitor was indeed a 'Chesapeake blue crab' from the US where it is valued as a food source. This is the first time a blue crab has been found in the Guadiana and local fishermen have been asked by the researchers to be on the lookout for more examples. The Chesapeake blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, also known as the Atlantic blue crab, is a species native to the waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and the
Gulf of Mexico but has popped up in the strangest of places after being transported in ships’ ballast tanks. The last recorded identification of a blue crab in Portugal was in the Sado estuary and researchers want to discover whether the species is establishing itself along the Portuguese coastline. Callinectes sapidus is native to the western edge of the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Cod to Argentina and around the Gulf of Mexico. The crab has travelled in ballast tanks to Japanese and European waters, and has been spotted in the Baltic, Mediterranean, North Sea and Black Sea. The first record from European waters was made in 1901 at Rochefort in France. The crab is tasty and was an important
food source for Native Americans and European settlers in the Chesapeake Bay area in the 1600s. later, they mostly were used as bait until advances in refrigeration techniques in the late 1800s and early 1900s increased the supply of blue crab across the US. The declining blue crab population is now the subject of anxiety among fishermen in the US as over the decade between the mid-1990s to 2004, the estimated population fell from 900 million to around 300 million. Many factors are to blame for low blue crab numbers, including high fishing pressure, environmental degradation, and disease. Hopefully the waters of the Guardiana will offer a safe haven for the delicious incomers.
Olhão breaks hotel records for August
R
Source: www.portugalresident.com
apidly becoming a new reference when it comes to Algarve holiday destinations, the fishing town of Olhão has broken one of the region’s hotel records for August. It saw the largest rise in what is termed “hotel occupation” - meaning more and more tourists are falling for Olhão’s eclectic charms. Says AHETA - the association for hotels and tourist complexes - 4.1% more holidaymakers chose Olhão this year than in 2016. On the last stretch of a nailbiting campaign for re-election next month Mayor António Pina has been quoted as saying: “We are very satisfied with these numbers as they reflect the path followed by this executive in terms of placing Olhão on the route for international tourism of quality, as
6
opposed to tourism for the masses. “Even so, we’re delighted to see this increase for the peak holiday month”. On a regional level, AHETA reports that hotel occupation rose by 2.2%, with the average hotel occupation for August hitting 93.9%. This has actually shown almost no change from 2016, thus Olhão’s ‘record’ is all the more remarkable. Going deeper into the figures, AHETA stresses once again the decline of the British market, blamed in the fall in the value of the pound against the euro. 2017’s summer season has seen a 16.3% decline in the number of holidaying Brits, though numbers otherwise are up by 10%, with 4.3% more Germans, and more Polish, French, Swedish, Belgian, Danish and Italian visitors than ever before.

Osteopathy
O
How can it help with muscle aches and pains
steopathy is often the treatment of choice for athletes, sports people as well as the general public. This is because it deals directly with the tissues that are causing discomfort without the use of pain-killing drugs. At our practice, our therapists do this by physically manipulating the muscles, ligaments and tendons involved. These techniques, depending on the type of injury the client has, can: relax tight muscles, release trapped ligaments and tendons, reduce inflammation, improve circulation. Muscle aches and pains are among the most common complaints seen by osteopaths. They can involve single muscles or a whole muscle group. Muscles can become painful for a variety of reasons, such as: overuse, injury and trauma, infection, bad posture, whiplash or overload. One of the most common causes of muscle pain is known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). This usually occurs 48 hours after exercise if the level of activity has been too much for the muscle to cope with. When should I call the Osteopath if I have muscle pain? If the pain persists and carries on for longer than 3 days, it is very important for your Osteopath to assess it and give you a diagnosis and treatment plan. Your Osteopath will then be able to advise you as to the level of exercise and training your body will be able to cope with whilst you are receiving
8
treatment. If any changes are needed in the way you work or train you will be advised accordingly. Once the pain has been assessed and treated, regular exercise (even gentle exercise) can help restore good muscle tone. At Fisioclube, we can advise you on the appropriate exercise to help keep you pain free. It is never advisable to take pain relief before taking part in highimpact activities or physical work. This is because without the feedback from your body’s nervous system, it is easy to over-use and re-damage injured muscles and ligaments. Although it is always better not to take drugs, as they all have side effects, they can be useful in some circumstances. lf muscle pain is preventing you from sleeping, this can have a serious effect on your whole life, and it is worth a compromise of the side effects of the pain-killers for a good night’s sleep. Pain-killing drugs can sometimes counteract the effectiveness of other medication you may be taking, and in some cases can be very harmful. Therefore it is important to check with your Doctor as to whether they are appropriate, or indeed safe. Some inflammatory conditions will benefit from NSAID (Non-Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs) but again, it must be remembered that they may reduce inflammation but not the cause of the inflammation, also they can cause stomach problems in some cases. At Fisioclube, our Ostheopaths can help you and answer all your questions,
about Ostheopathy and it´s bennefits. Visit Fisioclube Holistic Therapy Center, where we can improve your quality of life and well-being

Quality, impeccable service together with a setting which is arguably one of the best! Café Meringue is the ultimate place to relax and enjoy real home made cakes and pastries.
L
ocated on the riverside in the picturesque and ancient town of Tavira, Café Meringue offers a fabulous views of the town and the calming River Gilão. Owners Emma and husband Farokh Morand opened in May 2017 and have so far had a very busy Summer. Extensive renovations took place prior to opening, completely transforming the inside of the impressive building. Farokh, in particular with his flair and background in interior decoration carried out a great deal of work himself, creating a relaxing, stylish and very homely feel. Emma from near Bordeaux in the South of France studied publishing and also loved to cook. She and Farokh travelled extensively, visiting Australia and
10
China as well as living in the Philippines for some time. It was after holidaying in the East Algarve in 2015 that they decided to stay, open a business and make this beautiful place their home. “Food and the love of bringing people together from all over the world” was the inspiration to open Café Meringue Emma explains. Meringue is of course a cake topping, but is the same in many countries. This is where the name Café Meringue came from. Many items used to decorate the bright, spacious and comfortable inside space has come from their travels abroad. The stylish sunny pavement terrace is a great place to watch the passing fishing boats as well as the ferry to Tavira Island.

he welcoming and experienced Centro Hipico Quinta Beldade Stables are located in Almargem, just a few minutes drive from the historic town of Tavira. Owned by Denise Inês, an approved trainer and rider from the Portuguese Equestrian Federation the stables opened in 2010. Denise was joined by Claire Prowse in January of 2017 and together both riders have taken the Center and its capability to the next level, organizing more shows, training and competing with young horses as well as keeping lessons available for all levels, from children to adults, both in dressage and in show jumping. September the 17th saw the fourth unaffiliated dressage show held at the yard and the first prize giving event given to the first three riders in each event. This was generously sponsored by Golden Crown Property Management, Reilly's Irish Bar Tavira and Farrier José Lopes. The show consisted of three classes, Preliminary, Elementary and Medium, with level 2 of each being disputed between regional riders. The stables attracted nineteen entries in total, eight of those were riders from Quinta Beldade, and four of these were young riders in their first show with other competitors from Loulé, São Brás, Porches and even Ourique! Sophie Catlin and her young four year old Inca Rose, raised and trained at the yard, won their class in the preliminary 2 test. In second place was Lisa Schuller, with Hortelão das Postas, a purebred Lusitano and in third, Alice Verboekend with her horse Tiamo from Loulé. Elementary 2 class was won by Paula Siebert, one of Quinta Belgrade’s more experienced students riding Zarco, a Lusitano cross. In second place was Esther Laplooi from Porches and in third Lisa Schuller with Hortelão. In the Medium tests Daniel Pires, a local rider from São Brás riding his Lusitano Hidalgo came in first, second was Tiago riding a Hanoverian under the watchful eye of his trainer João Pedro Miranda and in third Josephine Schroder with Zarco. It was a very successful show, not as many entries, due to previous weekends having had Sela exams as well as other shows, but still an excellent turnout, with very positive feed back from riders and visitors alike. The National Open Dressage in Lisbon will see some of the regional riders competing. DOWNSIZE WITHOUT
O
n average a person moves house 8 times during their life time mainly due to changes in lifestyle. Some want to be closer to amenities and/or family and friends, while young families may have outgrown their home and need a larger property as their family grows in size. When the children have grown up and left, a family home that was perfect before can become a burden due to high running cost and maintenance. As one is getting older the work in the garden especially can become too much. Downsizing or rightsizing is the next step and when living on a countryside location this often goes hand in hand with relocating to a town or city where all amenities are nearby. Releasing equity by buying a smaller property and/or moving to a cheaper location could sometimes be beneficial too. What ever the reason for moving home might be, it remains a stressful event for many people. This is particularly true when you are downsizing. Often people prefer a more or less similar home with spacious living room and kitchen but fewer bedrooms/ bathrooms and a smaller, low maintenance garden and ideally on a central
24
location where one does not need a car all of the time. Moving from a tranquil countryside location with lovely garden and swimming pool to an apartment in a high density residential area in town center with busy traffic is not everyone’s cup of tea. Finding the right place is a balancing act not to be taken lightly. There are many coastal towns in the Algarve to choose from depending on your requirements. However, it is hard to beat what Tavira in the East Algarve has to offer. This historic town is developing in a very pleasant way. Here history, heritage, tradition, beaches and tourism have blended well and the large, active expat community is living happily along side the friendly Portuguese people. As in most towns, there are many
apartment buildings but not many detached properties to choose from. However, if you are looking for a property in the center of a town, Tavira should be high on your list. New developments are mostly located south of the N-125 as there is hardly any land available in Tavira town center. So when a rare opportunity comes along to buy off- plan 3 and 4 bedroom semidetached villas and townhouses with private swimming pool on a very good location in the center of Tavira with all amenities within walking distance, one should pay attention. Land and Houses Algarve - Yellow Homes are pleased to announce that we have a total 4 villas and 9 townhouses for sale all to be developed with top quality finishing’s. In the 1st phase all 4 villas will be constructed followed by the 2nd phase when the 9 townhouses will be built. The villas and townhouses consist of a hallway leading to a light and bright living room with dining area and adjacent an open plan fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar and utility room, a guest bathroom consisting of a w.c. and hand wash basin, a double bedroom with built-in wardrobes and en-suite bathroom. The 1st floor comprises of two spacious double bedrooms, each with walk-in wardrobe, ensuite bathroom and access onto a terrace with views of the historical center of Tavira towards the sea. Optional fourth bedroom with built-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom on the 2nd floor, with access to a large sun terrace and pre-installed connections for a Spa/Jacuzzi. Access from both the living room and kitchen through large sliding windows onto a semi-covered terrace with summer kitchen leading to the low maintenance garden with swimming pool. Off street parking in addition to storage for bicycles and golf bags. Solar energy for hot water, air conditioning and all electrical kitchen equipment are included. Optional extras

COMPROMISE are: an elevator, under floor heating, 4th bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The first two villas sold will have under floor heating included without extra cost. These high quality homes are ideal for permanent living and as a buy to let investment they offer superior rental yields due to the specifications, typology and location. Before buying a property you should always think of your exit strategy first. A lot of thought has gone into the design of these properties to appeal to a broad range of buyers. When a property appeals to a broad range of buyers, you are not depending on one particular type of buyer when you decide to sell at a future date. Tavira celebrates Fernando Pessoa's Álvaro de Campos' birthday for the third year. Join in the celebrations and enjoy the exhibitions, radio presentations, dance, film, and even dinners – with music and poetry!
ernando Pessoa (18881935) was one of the greatest poets of Portugal and the world. He chose to write under his own name, but also under many others. Among these “heteronyms”, Álvaro de Campos became one of the most popular ones. Like the other “authors”, he gave him a complete fictionalbiography. And so: Álvaro de Campos was born in Tavira on October 15, 1890. (Pessoa chose Tavira because it was the town where his father’s family lived.) When he had finished school, he was sent to Scotland where he studied mechanical and naval engineering. Álvaro looked
"vaguely Jewish-Portuguese, pale olive skin, straight hair, usually side parted, wore a monocle", according to his creator. From 1987 till the present day Casa Álvaro de Campos, dedicated to the study of his work, has been organising a special program to mark Álvaro’s birthday and since 2006 Armação de Artista, a theatre association, has performed his poems every year. In 2015 Tela Leão created the association Partilha Alternativa and since that year she has brought Tavira’s artistic associations and individual artists together to celebrate their famous fellow citizen. The programme consists
of music and poetry concerts, from classical and popular Portuguese music to Brazilian rhythms and jazz, exhibitions of visual art and of historical documents related to Pessoa, radio presentations, dance, film, and even dinners – with music and poetry! The third Birthday Party for Álvaro de Campos runs from 1st October to 30th November and is part of the 365 Algarve programme and receives support from the Município de Tavira, and publicity support from Casa Fernando Pessoa in Lisbon. Seasonal
Vegetables I
A guide to planting vegetables all year round to have a plentiful supply, by Janet O'Shaughnessy
often get asked what can I plant (vegetable wise) and when here in the Algarve. I see autumn as an English spring, so now I will be planting peas beans and brassicas, for an early crop. Early in the year March April when the weather is getting warmer I would be thinking about, melons, squashes courgettes, fruit trees, summer fruits. July and august I just try and keep things alive with a little water every other day. Here is a guide to what and when from an elderly neighbour of mine. Like most things in life there is no golden rule. The climate in Portugal is not set in stone, so neither should the planting schedule be.It is important to sow seeds when the soil is moist, not waterlogged and has had a few days of sunshine to warm

it up. Broad beans and peas seem to be able to cope with wet soil. Sweet pepper, sweet corn and melons need the soil very warm to germinate and survive. January Sowing: Broad beans, lettuces, Chinese cabbage, peas, onions, garlic, mange tout peas, potatoes, cabbages/cauliflowers for spring/summer uses Other tasks: Digging in manure to beds ready for summer vegetables; adding lime to soil that is to grow beans and brassicas; adding fertiliser or muck to cabbages still growing; weeding around existing plants. February Sowing: Carrots, lettuces, peas, radish, Swiss chard, turnips, beetroot, potatoes.

Gardens
Other tasks: Dig over and prepare seedbeds and permanent bedsfor summer vegetables; earth-up potatoes as necessary; weed as necessary and thin out carrots. March Sowing: French beans, climbing beans, carrots, cucumber, lettuce, pumpkin, potatoes, melons, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, lettuces, radishes, okra. Other tasks: Prepare irrigation systems; weed summer beds; weed carrots diligently; transplant cabbages and cauliflowers; transplant onions; add manure/ fertiliser to soil limed in January. April Sowing: Summer crops that failed to thrive last month can still be sowed, plus courgettes and melons. More beans, aubergine, carrots, cucumbers, and radishes can be sowed to ensure a constant supply. Other tasks: Transplant lettuces, May Sowing: Cucumbers, pumpkins, sweet pepper, sweet corn, Brussel sprouts. Other tasks: Prepare bed for sweet potato slips; keep beans well watered. June Sowing: Anything sowed now will have to survive the hot summer months. More beans, pumpkins, courgettes,
36
cucumbers can be sown but will need plenty of water. Other tasks: Cut slips from the sweet potatoes and transplant to permanent bed. July Sowing: French beans, carrots, cucumbers, pumpkins, potatoes. To get an early start you could also start off some cauliflowers and cabbages ready for transplanting six weeks later. Other tasks: Prepare beds for brassica transplants - lime first, wait
a month then manure or fertilise. August Sowing: French beans, cabbages, cauliflowers, pumpkins, potatoes, mange-tout peas for a November crop. Other tasks: Transplant cabbage and cauliflower seedlings. September Sowing: As long as it is still sunny and not too wet many crops can still be sown - French beans, cabbages, carrots, lettuces, Chinese cabbage and the last planting of potatoes. It should now be cool enough to begin winter radishes and turnips as well as small radishes. Other tasks: Prepare beds for planting broad beans and peas that are going to overwinter. October Sowing: Broad beans and peas, lettuces (not if it’s very wet), radishes, winter radish, carrots to over winter. Other tasks: Transplant cabbage seedlings. November Sowing: Broad beans and peas Other tasks: Transplant cabbage seedlings. December Sowing: You can still put in broad beans and peas. Lettuces will germinate and grow quickly under a makeshift cold frame. As you can see from this guide lettuce can grow all year round as well as carrots and potatoes.. Enjoy your vegetables, they taste so much better when home grown, and I hope this is a helpful guide.

A
s you may be aware, besides taxation one of the main obligations of the property owners that rent their properties to tourists, is to report to SEF (emigration office) the entry and exit of all guests with nonPortuguese nationality. Things you should know about acca
1
ACCA was formed 17 years ago, by a group of ex-pats keen to put something back into the region they had fallen in love with and chosen to be home. Led by Jane Oliphant, the small team looked at what was needed most and decided that they could best help disadvantaged children. Today, the ACCA team of dedicated volunteers, works tirelessly to meet those needs, fundraising to cover the costs of special treatments – physical, psychological and educational to give all youngsters the opportunity to thrive.

Children’s charity ACCA aims to bring a smile to young faces by providing professional support and much-needed back-up services. You can help ACCA help children
ACCA has close relationships with orphanages, institutions, schools and individual families living below the poverty line, right across the Algarve. The charity has developed a series of on-going programmes. This year, for example, the Back to School scheme ensured that more than 800 youngsters could take full part in lessons right from the first day of term. The Central Ladies Lunch Club, Vila Sol Golf Club, Laranjal Golf Club, Four Season Fairways in Quinta do Lago and St Vincent’s Anglican Chaplaincy were among those groups who fund-
raised and shopped to provide back packs filled with essentials. ACCA knows how to party! With the support of marvellous backers such as the Conrad Hotel, top flight events are a feature on the Algarve’s social calendar. September’s lavish Casablanca dinner, dance and auction raised a stunning €20,000 for further ACCA projects. Requests for aid come from a variety of schools and institutions, and the needs are varied. It could be glasses for youngsters with sight problems who fail to see the world around them; or

urgent dental work for kids who have never known a day without pain; or special equipment for those who cannot function by themselves; or speech therapy where conversation and learning is hindered. Golf Club mmbers are brilliant supporters. The Captain’s Day competition staged by Laranjal in early September resulted in a cheque for ACCA for €22,000 and was made possible by sponsors that included Fiaal, KWV, Blevin Franks, Prime Wine, James Healey Staunch Ltd, Casa Curiosa, SGQL, Algarve Fine Foods and Art Catto. three young lads went round the guests with empty back packs and collected €1,280 towards the backto-school programme. And Pinheiro Altos Club collects monies almost daily, and volunteers help when extra hands are needed. Last year, ACCA’s packs of luxury greetings cards (each card featured a painting from a well-known artist) which were sold at various events, at golf clubs and prestigious shops, produced more than €5,000, and a new set of cards will be launched shortly and hopefully attract equally impressive revenues.

Next up for 2017 is the annual Angels programme in which Christmas gifts are brought for kiddies – and could be the only one each of them receives. Last year ACCA raised funds, shopped, wrapped and delivered presents to close to 1,500 children across the Algarve and this year is aiming to match that. Donations and volunteers form the backbone of this activity. Want to know more or get involved? Contact ACCA secretary Lynda Fury on 936 463 177 / Lyndafury@sky.com. Jefferson (17) fires in the third goal against SC Lamego in the Portugal Cup
SOLID START All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.
S
C Olhanense has made a good start as they strive to make an immediate return to the Segunda Liga after being relegated to the Campeonato de Portugal last season. Undefeated with three wins and a draw, they conceded their first goal after 280 minutes of football in the feisty 3-2 win at Lusitano VRSA. This game had everything including nine yellow cards and one red; two penalties; several skirmishes; occasional flashes of good football; police intervention and a winning goal in the final moment of stoppage time! Three loan signings and the return of a former favourite Galassi should give manager Bruno Saraiva greater flexibility. 19 year-old Jefferson Encada, on loan from Sporting Lisbon, made an immediate impact when he scored the only goal of the game against Louletano (Loulé). His speed and lightning acceleration will cause many teams problems. 22 year-old forward Mochine

Hassan (V.Setúbal) scored the winner against Lusitano VRSA whilst Brazilian born Ítalo Santos (Inter Milan) will strengthen the defence. Moncarapachense have won two and drawn one of their opening four games whilst SC Farense sit just a point behind Olhanense. Lusitano VRSA are struggling near the foot of the table. OLHANENSE GET MIGHTY BENFICA IN PORTUGAL CUP! In the Portugal Cup - equivalent to the English FA Cup - only SC Olhanense and SC Farense made it through to the next round. Olhanense won 4-1 at home against SC Lamego and SC Farense edged a 3-2 away win at Amora FC (Setúbal). The draw favoured Olhanense who will entertain cup holders and Primeira Liga champions Benfica in the third round on the weekend 14th/15th October. SC Farense will play Estoril In Faro the same weekend.

ormer Portugal international Rui Costa, he played 94 times for his country, was a surprise visitor at the Olhanense game with Louletano. Nicknamed "The Maestro", he spent the majority of his career with Benfica, Fiorentina and A.C. Milan. He won one Primeira Liga title, one Taça de Portugal, one Serie A title, three Coppa Italia, a UEFA Champions League title (2003) and the UEFA Super Cup. He helped Portugal reach the EURO 2004 final on home soil, scoring a screamer of a goal at the Estádio da Luz against England in the quarter-final. Football fans Freddie Offley and James Somerville from Camberley, Surrey, holidaying in Albufeira, were ‘over-the-moon’ to meet the football superstar.

years ago Brian Kilcline lifted the FA Cup at Wembley as Coventry City beat Spurs 3-2 after extra-time. Brian, regarded by Kevin Keegan as his most important signing for Newcastle United, recalled those times as he enthralled guests on Tavira’s riverside. Thanks to the generosity of Joy & Vinnie Kennedy, the Beira Rio Restaurant supplied the food free-of-charge, all proceeds went to charity with the €1000 being shared equally between Centre Algarve (Moncarapacho) and junior footballers at Casa Benfica, Tavira. Many of those present on the evening are members of the rapidly growing East Algarve Walking Football family which recently celebrated its third birthday in Olhão with bubbly and cakes.
WALKING FOOTBALL EXPANDS
s the years take their toll on the body, those players over sixty and some well into their 70s, find it more challenging to keep pace with their younger colleagues born in the era of England’s only World Cup success in ‘66! A NEW weekly session will start on Tuesday 10th October from 9.30am to 11.30am at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão (behind McDonalds on the EN125) and will in Tavira only be open to thoseHorse overRiding 60 yearsof-age. On the 6th/7th October, Soccer Olhanense Strollers will be defending their title at the Algarve Walking Football Cup, Browns Sports & Leisure Centre, Vilamoura. In early November Cottingham Rangers Walking Footballers (Yorkshire) will be visiting Olhão as more teams, there are currently over 800 clubs in the UK alone, head for the warmer climes of the Algarve. www.walkingfootballalgarve.com

Golf
The low Stinger
A
ll over the World, we as golfers will always experience a shot when we are hitting into the wind. I see a lot of golfers simply taking an extra club and hitting the shot as hard as they can. Ultimately this results in the ball creating too much spin and climbing into and up the wind rather than boring through it. When Tiger Woods came onto the scene and developed a way of playing hugely successful golf in The Open Championship especially, he used the ´low stinger shot´. In this month’s article I will show you how to play this shot and be able to control your ball flight through the nose-wind. Move the ball position 1 ball farther back in
your stance than you would do for a standard shot with said club At set up and throughout the swing, feel like your weight is more predominantly on your front foot; almost like you are pressing it down. This weight forward also compensates for the steeper angle of attack you will achieve from the ball position being slightly farther
