new monument has been set up along Ferragudo’s riverfront in honour of the village’s maritime rescue team. In a statement, Lagoa council said it “recognises the professional commitment of the people who are part of the Ferragudo team” as well as the “selflessness and humanity they show through their willingness to save people at sea in conditions that are not always easy, and are often risky”. The ceremony was held last week and attended by Lagoa mayor Francisco Martins and Secretary of State of National Defence Marcos Perestrello. Ship master José Jeremias was handed a Navy Cross
(Cruz Naval) by the secretary of state, which awards “those who show great competence, extraordinary performance and personal qualities”, and “contribute significantly to the efficiency, prestige and the goals of the Ministry of National Defence, the Armed Forces or the Navy”. Perestrello also spoke of “the beauty of the Ferragudo view” and the need to “improve working conditions at the village’s maritime rescue station”. The secretary of state also wants to create a new professional status “in line with the level of professionalism demanded of maritime rescue crews”.

ALGARVE TO BOOST UK PROMOTION AFTER BREXIT
he Algarve’s tourism board (RTA) has announced plans to increase the region’s promotion efforts in the UK following the seismic outcome of Britain’s EU referendum. Following a meeting with several other regional and national entities, RTA decided that the Algarve has to “strengthen its relationship with the British” and also work harder to attract other foreign markets as well. The entities also agreed to come up with a series of measures to help the Algarve deal with the possible impact of the Brexit. According to RTA, the UK is Portugal’s main touristic market. The Algarve is the location where 70 precent of the Brits who spend a night in Portugal choose to stay.

wo rescued turtles have finished their recuperation at the Algarve’s Zoomarine and hitched a lift with the Navy to be released far from the coast. The sea turtles have been recovering and putting on weight at Zoomarine’s special recovery unit run by the biologist Élio Vicente. The common turtles (Caretta caretta), named by staff as Mar and Magnólia, have been released 12 nautical miles south of Portimão and have been fitted with microchips so they can be identified if they get into any more trouble. According to Élio Vincente, ‘Mar’ was found by fishermen in 2015 after it had become tangled in nets. It has been at Zoomarine ever since while a lung problem was dealt with and injuries attended to. Magnólia was found on a beach on the Dutch coast and first sent to Rotterdam Zoo and then to Zoomarine to complete the rehabilitation. Magnólia needed to be returned to the warmer Portuguese waters and should not have been so far north. Vicente says Magnólia has put on 10 kilos and that his case was surprising as the turtle has travelled into the colder waters of the north which is rare “as usually these turtles are in tropical and subtropical temperate waters." The Portuguese Navy have done the honours and released the animals to the south of Portimão without incident, marking another successful outcome for the Zoomarine team.

Dogs and Heat exhaustion

HEAT EXHAUSTION IN DOGS:: Dog fur is great protection against the cold but can be a problem in hot weather. This is because, unlike humans, dogs eliminate heat by panting. (Dogs have some sweat glands in the footpads which help with heat dissipation, but only minimally.) When panting isn’t enough, their body temperature rises. This can be fatal if not corrected quickly WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Excessive panting and signs of discomfort indicate overheating. However, it is important to be aware of the ambient temperature and take appropriate preventative measures. PRIMARY CAUSE: Any hot environment can cause heatstroke, but the most common cause is careless actions such as leaving a dog in a car on a hot day or forgetting to provide shade to an animal kept outdoors. IMMEDIATE CARE: It is essential to remove the dog from the hot environment immediately. If it is unconscious, make sure no water enters the nose or mouth as you follow these guidelines. Also, do not give the dog aspirin to lower its temperature; this can lead to other problems. Put your dog in the bath tub. Run a cool (not cold) shower over your pet, covering the whole body -- especially the back of the head and neck. Allow the water to fill up the bathtub as you shower the
dog. Keep the head elevated to prevent aspiration pneumonia. If getting the dog into the tub is impractical, use a garden hose to cool the dog or place him in a pool of cool water. Apply a cold pack to the dog’s head to help lower his body temperature -- a packet of frozen vegetables works fine. Massage the legs. A vigorous rubbing helps the dog’s circulation and reduces the risks of shock. Let the dog drink as much cool or cold water as it wants. Adding a pinch of salt to the water bowl will help the dog replace the minerals it lost through panting. The following steps should be taken, regardless of whether the dog is conscious, appears to recover well, or was only mildly affected: Check for signs of shock. Take the dog’s temperature every five minutes, continuing watercooling until it drops below 103°F (39.4°C). If the dog’s temperature drops a little more – to around 100°F (37.8°C) – don’t worry. A slightly low temperature is a lot less dangerous. Treat for shock if necessary. Get immediate veterinary attention. Heatstroke can cause unseen problems, such as swelling of the brain, kidney failure, and abnormal clotting of blood. On the way to the veterinarian, travel with the windows open and the air conditioner on. VETERINARY CARE: Treatment will consist mostly of replacing lost fluids and minerals. This may extend to secondary conditions, which your vet
Signs of heat exhaustion with dogs and how to avoid or treat it! will be able to identify. Intravenous fluid therapy and monitoring for secondary complications such as kidney failure, development of neurologic symptoms, abnormal clotting, changes in blood pressure, and electrolytes abnormalities are typically recommended in cases of heatstroke. OTHER CAUSES: Dogs with thick fur, short noses, or those suffering from medical conditions such as laryngeal paralysis and obesity are predisposed to heatstroke. In addition, dogs that enjoy constant exercise and playtime -- such as working dogs (Labradors, Springer Spaniels, etc.) -should be closely monitored for signs of overheating, especially on hot days. PREVENTION: Heat stroke can be prevented by taking caution not to expose a dog to hot and humid conditions. This is especially applicable for dogs with airway diseases and breeds with shortened faces (e.g., the Pug, Bulldog, Shi Tzu). Also, while traveling in cars, make sure that the dog is well ventilated by placing it in a wired cage or in an open basket, and never leave your dog in a car with the windows closed, even if the car is parked in the shade. When outdoors, always make sure your dog is in a wellventilated area with access to plenty of water and shady spots.

I
f you think the pictures look great just wait until you try this!! Stand-up Paddle boarding is one of the fastest growing water sports all around the world. The origins of Stand-up Paddle Boarding takes us back centuries to the ancient Hawaiians of whom it is said ‘Only the Kings and Queens of the islands’ were allowed to stand upright upon the vessels of the day. Their subjects had to remain in a seated, kneeling or supine position to manoeuvre themselves in the ocean. In the 1940’s a few prolific surfers known as the ‘Waikiki Beach Boys’ began to use paddles to propel their heavy boards into position - this paved the way for the beginning of Stand-up Paddle Boarding. A few facts about SUP, not only is it an exciting way to enjoy yourself. It is a great way to strengthen core muscles and improve your balance and posture. Our fascination and connection with the ocean is something that we perhaps do not always think about. However for John & Heike of ZEN SUP it has become a way of life; an opportunity for them
www.simply-algarve.com
to express both their passion and philosophy for a healthy balanced life together. We joined them on Trafal Beach close to Quarteira to find out more about their business ZEN-SUP. ZEN-SUP started as a business 2 years ago. However it is easy to understand when talking to John & Heike that ZENSUP as a concept, not just a business, began long before. They both share a passion for eastern philosophy which led them to practice Yoga and Meditation. This same journey has now led them to Stand Up Paddling. Their business name and logo incorporates Zen calligraphy, which reflects their spiritual connection to their practice and philosophy of paddle boarding. This translates to creating a very simple and individual experience. The career paths and backgrounds of John and Heike are very different from the lifestyle they now lead here in Portugal. John’s family origins in Ireland connect him to a long line of sailors who achieved numerous high profile sailing
11
trophies. In fact it was his father’s wish to sail to Portugal, hence some 30 years ago he sailed with his father and arrived here in Portugal! In spite of his sailing connections, John’s career has taken him in many directions. From running a WindSurfing school on the River Shannon to several successful building projects in Dublin. For John his ‘eureka’ moment was over a cup of coffee during his long working day in Dublin - thinking that there had to be something in his life that was more fulfilling and meaningful. Heike lived and worked in Berlin and unlike John, her career was as a Social Worker, Art Therapist and a Couples Councillor. Heike was also finding that it was time for a change in lifestyle. After a 6 year long-distance relationship, Heike left her life in Berlin to join John in Portugal where their dreams of creating ZEN-SUP were becoming a reality. If you join John and Heike as a beginner, intermediate or advanced paddler, you can rest assured you are in good hands because they are fully qualified and adhere to all Health and Safety regulations. Your lesson will begin with time on the beach progressing to the water and once
12
you have learnt a few of the basics ZEN-SUP offer different experiences including Sunset and Full Moon Tours, not to mention bespoke tours of the Ria Formosa and Costal Algarve, taking in the cliffs and caves. A highlight of one such session was that John, Heike and their students found they had attracted a pod of dolphins and watched in sheer delight as they danced through the water. Families have lots of fun in the lessons together and of course there is always time made for the traditional ‘group shot’ to show all your friends! They have had many students of all levels of experience from their youngest student of 4 years of age to their most mature student of 76 years! A day spent with John and Heike and their dog Luna, who also rides on their board’s was wonderful and something that's definitely not to be missed. Perhaps we could take some advice for life on dry land from John & Heike – Focus on the Horizon, find your balance and let go, there is nothing to hold you back... alking through the doors of Sophie Goffart’s business venture ‘PRESTY’ you cannot fail to be impressed. Sophie has brought cutting edge technology from Paris to her clinic, here in the Algarve which is a temple to fitness, health and beauty. The emphasis at PRESTY lies in slimming and rejuvenation using processes and natural based products that work with, and in conjunction with the natural functions of the body. Sophie and her team at PRESTY have a systemic approach to fitness, which enables their clients to redefine themselves through a combination of exercise, nutrition, and therapies, which often leads to many of their clients making a few logical lifestyle changes. Her team are on hand to keep them motivated and take pride in the fact that the salon’s motto: “Your Body is a work of Art” (which you can find on all mirrors) is a gentle reminder that through our own efforts and perhaps a little help from her team, we can naturally sculpt the body we desire. The woman behind all this is of course Sophie, whose personal and professional journey is as impressive as her clinic. Originally from France, Sophie has worked all over the world. Her career in tourism spanned many years taking

her all across Europe and the Caribbean with the original “Club Med”. From reception, to head of hotel services, training teams and eventually to work in Organisational Development at Head Office in Paris. After major changes in the structure of the Company in 2011, Sophie joined HR at Carphonewarehouse in their head Office in Paris and London, finding herself once again travelling widely to train and implement her leading role in HR. By this time family values were becoming more important and Sophie felt the need to redirect her and her daughter’s lives. The decision to come to Portugal may have been instant, but the journey was not and took several attempts to find the right premises for business. Once her daughter’s school was in place then things began to come together and work began. Sophie has designed the layout of the clinic herself as she was the only one that knew what she wanted...PRESTY. Sophie is a perfectionist and this is reflected in all aspects of the clinic, from the themes and decor in each of the 6 treatment rooms which are all conducive to the therapies being offered, to the ‘Jungle’ themed Gym. The ‘PRESTY CLUB’ gym, while offering the latest and exclusive Bodytec Electro-stimulation, Sismo and Cardio machines brings

out your ‘wild side’ with a little encouragement from our ‘jungle giants’. You may find many new therapies on offer at PRESTY that have not been seen here in the Algarve. Sophie and her team take time to explain their benefits and uses. They will prepare a personalised programme using the latest in scanning and diagnostic machines, including food intolerances to gain information in your initial consultation enabling you to make full use of the gym, clinic and therapies PRESTY has to offer. The therapies include cryotherapy, which gives amazing results. This in layman’s terms is the eliminating of fat cells through the freezing process, enabling inches to be lost in one session! Just in case you are wondering, this is not painful at all! Further treatments include: deep

lymphatic drainage and firming of the skin. Try this on your face and you will look gorgeous! Chromotherapy which treats the body with colour through the use of electromagnetic radiation, has many applications, helps depression, hairloss, eczema, insomnia and aids digestion to name but a few. LED therapy – Lipo light, is used to treat stretch marks, scars and skin disorders. This has great results for anti-aging and skin conditions, sounds like magic but it's scientifically proven.

However Sophie’s largest machine that will be delivered shortly, is a Cryo Chamber. This is a chamber that reaches temperatures of -85 degrees celcius. The health benefits include boosting your immune system, helping recover from an injury as well as the release of endorphins from sitting in the chamber for just 3 minutes. Various celebrities are known to use this therapy including Cristiano Ronaldo. There are many more ways these therapies are used, which Sophie and her team can guide you through at length. In fact we will be running features on each of these cutting edge machines in the future, so please watch this space! Membership packages are available for PRESTY which bring with them great offers. Or you can just indulge in the therapies on their own......the choice is yours and for less than you think. Last but not least....... the logo. For Sophie, this had to reflect core principles and her wishes for her clients. The wings symbolise freedom, and the Crown represents the Customer is King. Passive cooling methods for your home (part 2)
EFFICIENT HOME P assive cooling is the least expensive means of cooling a home in both financial and environmental terms. As cooling requirements are dictated by climate, distinctly different approaches to passive cooling are required for temperate and warm climates, where both heating and cooling is needed. COOLING PEOPLE Factors affecting comfort for people (human thermal comfort) are outlined in Design for climate and include both physiological and psychological factors. To be effective, passive cooling needs to cool both the building and the people in it. Evaporation of perspiration is the most effective physiological cooling process. It requires air movement and moderate to low humidity (less than 60 percent). Radiant heat loss is also important, both physiologically and psychologically. It involves direct radiation to cooler surfaces. As we pointed out in our last article: The efficiency of the building envelope can be maximised in a number of ways to minimise heat gain: a) Block heat from entering. b) Minimise heat generated. c) provide ventilation in order move the air and by that reduce the temperature.
20
d) Air condition only when needed as a supplement to low-energy cooling strategies. MINIMISE HEAT GENERATED All homes contain numerous internal sources of heat. Common sources of internal heat gain include people, pets, electronic devices and lights, which all generate varying amounts of heat. Even small transformers for answering machines produce a small amount of heat. The most significant sources of heat include conventional stoves and ovens, clothes dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, incandescent lights, aquarium lights and heaters, television sets and computers. Even microwave ovens produce waste heat, though much less than conventional stoves and ovens. When added up, these numerous small and seemingly insignificant internal heat sources collectively generate a substantial amount of heat. These sources make our homes warmer and less comfortable and contribute to higher energy bills. It therefore makes economic sense in the long run to eliminate internal heat sources. You can start by systematically locating all sources of internal heat gain in your home. Switch all sources that you don't need off. Avoid standby modes. Switch
off unused appliances, dry your laundry outside and consider cooking more meals outdoors on a grill or perhaps on a solar oven. You could eat meals that require less cook time, for example, salads with chicken or boiled eggs. You will find that most heat-reducing solutions are fairly easy and inexpensive. Some may require more costly fixes like replacing energy-inefficient appliances. Replacing an old inefficient water heater with a tankless model, especially a model without a pilot light, will reduce internal heat gain and save lots of money over time. Such a costly solution often makes good sense, especially if the appliance needs replacing anyway. PROVIDE VENTILATION Air movement Air movement cools people by increasing evaporation and requires both breeze capture and fans for back-up in still conditions. It also cools buildings by carrying heat out of the building as warmed air and replacing it with cooler external air. This method is best to use at night and in the morning where temperatures drop. During the hot peak period of the day, keep you windows closed as much as possible and cool with fans. Cool breezes Where the climate provides cooling
www.simply-algarve.com
HOMES
breezes, maximising their flow through a home is an essential component of passive design. Unlike cool night air, these breezes tend to occur in the late afternoon or early evening when cooling requirements usually peak. Create a crossed ventilation by having two posit windows tilted. FANS Fans provide reliable air movement for cooling people and supplementing breezes during still periods. At 50 percent relative humidity, air movement of 0.5m/s creates maximum cooling effect; faster speeds can be unsettling. Air can speed up to 1.0m/s and be useful in higher relative humidity, but prolonged air speeds above 1.0m/s cause discomfort. Standard ceiling fans can create a comfortable environment when temperature and relative humidity levels are within acceptable ranges. In a lightweight building in a warm temperate climate, the installation of fans in bedrooms and all living areas (including kitchens and undercover outdoor areas) significantly reduces cooling energy use. AIR CONDITIONING Refrigerated air conditioning lowers both air temperature and humidity and provides thermal comfort during
www.simply-algarve.com
periods of high temperature and humidity. However, it is expensive to install, operate and maintain and has a high economic and environmental cost because it consumes significant amounts of electricity unless high efficiency equipment is used in a very high performance building envelope. As it also requires the home to be sealed off from the outside environment, occupants are often unaware of improvements in the weather. Air conditioning is commonly used to create comfortable sleeping conditions. The number of operating hours required to achieve thermal comfort can be substantially reduced or eliminated by careful design of new homes, as well as alterations and additions to existing homes. Running a refrigerated air conditioner in a closed room for about an hour before bed often lowers humidity levels to the point where air movement from ceiling fans can provide sufficient evaporative cooling to achieve and maintain sleeping comfort. Some air conditioning units simply operate as fans when outdoor ambient temperature drops below the thermostat setting, so they can replace a ceiling fan. Efficient air conditioning requires more than simply installing an efficient air conditioner. Hybrid cooling

solutions require a decision early in the design stages about whether air conditioning is to be used and how many rooms require it. Come and talk to us ideally in your planning phase. Further passive ways of short term cooling: If you are not mechanically prepared for a heat wave, as it is occurring right now in England, try the following quick interventions: Place your bedlinen in the freezer and take it out 20 min before you go to bed. The linen will be comfortable, cool and helps us to fall asleep. During the night place a frozen cooling pad from your freezer under your pillow and wet a big towel and hang it in front of your tilted window. The hot outdoor air will cool down by passing through the wet towel and reduce the temperatures in your room. This works best if you do this on two onsite windows (cross ventilation) get heavy curtains or blinds to keep the heat out from your room chose light materials for your bedlinen and cool colours although our eyes are shut, our body reacts to different colours. Red for example raises your blood pressure and blue lowers it. For more information contact Arch. Anabela Macieira @ : geral@core-architects.com

here are statues of the incomparable Sir Bobby Robson at Ipswich FC, Newcastle United and in the museum at FC Porto but none can compare with the iconic statue unveiled at the Pestana Vila Sol Golf Course in Vilamoura last month. As Lady Elsie remarked, “I’m sure you will agree there was only one Bobby Robson. To me he was my husband, my friend and the father of our boys, a man who cared passionately about football ‘the beautiful game’.” As part of the thirteenth annual Sir Bobby Robson Golf Classic many footballers, past and present, gathered to pay tribute to an inspirational man who Sir Alex Ferguson once said, “There is not a person I would put an inch above Bobby Robson in all my years working in England. He was a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man whose

Sir Bobby and Lady Elsie fell in love with Portugal where Bobby managed Sporting Lisbon before achieving legendary success at FC Porto when he won the Primeira Liga and Portugal Cup in the mid 1990s. the unveiling, spoke eloquently about the effect Bobby Robson had on his life. José Mourinho and Villas-Boas started their managerial careers under the watchful eye of the great man at FC Porto. As the sun went down and cast its last rays over the status they accentuated the relaxed image of Bobby, as he used to be at Vila Sol, after his game of golf sitting and watching other players as they finished their rounds. No more fitting tribute could there be to a dignified, passionate and humanitarian gentleman. CHRIS WRIGHT

THE ALGARVE, what dreams are
T
he Algarve continues to be one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world Every year in summer the beaches are packed, with a peak in August, but walk a few miles in both direction and you almost have the beach to yourself. This year the total visitors to the Algarve is expected to reach an all time high, due to the
continuous popularity of the destination as well as the influx of hundreds of thousands of ´newcomers´ from other holiday destinations in countries that are currently facing turmoil. It is no surprise then that holidaymakers leave wishing to return, some on a permanent basis. Property prices are rising but still very attractive, having corrected 40 percent from their peak in 2008. In August of

2015 buyers from the United Kingdom could benefit from a double whammy, as Sterling versus the Euro was trading at an 8 year high. What a difference a year can make. With Brexit, Sterling weakened against all major currencies. However, the GBP/EURO cross rate does not look that dramatic if you put it in perspective, i.e. if you look at the 10 year chart you can see it is trading more or less in the middle of the trading range over this period. Making a permanent move to Portugal has become even more attractive with the successful introduction of programs such as the Golden Visa and the NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) to attract foreign buyers of property. No wonder then that there are many buyers around looking to secure their Algarve dream property! The NHR program is especially of interest to pensioners and the self employed with a scientific, technical or artistic nature, which basically end up paying zero tax on income, changing them from ‘not happy residents’ in their country of origin into very happy Portuguese residents indeed. Depending on the country of origin, tax on pensions can be as high as 60 percent of income. For example, a foreigner with a pension of Euro 3500 per month (after 50 percent tax) all of a sudden ends up receiving Euro 7000 per month once the NHR status in Portugal has been obtained. Once your have obtained the NHR status, the tax

The former enjoyed an increase in transaction volume. The latter managed to sell their property, which in many cases had been on the market for several years. Buyers who opt for the NHR program tend to have a preference for properties in the
East and West Algarve whereas buyers under the Golden Visa program tend to focus more on the Central Algarve and greater Lisbon area. The idea of Portugal as Europe’s newest tax haven is gaining traction, judged by the growing number of buyers from Scandinavia, France and Belgium. More and more people seem to think Portugal is a fiscal paradise. In addition, recent law changes for Local

Lodging include a lower tax rate of less than 4 percent of rental income, which makes a buy to let property all the more attractive as it offers the best of both worlds, namely your own home away from home and rental income. If you consider purchasing a property in the Algarve, timing may be of the essence. Property prices are still attractive and the Euro is relatively weak versus other currencies. NATURE
An introduction to
I
was new to the bird watching scene, and not the obsessive sort, so I attempted to join my casual hobbies and pastimes with a rewarding new project. Now, six months on, I would like to share the pleasure I have found in my new hobby. ...Time on your hands, looking for a hobby, enjoy outdoor life and nature, like a challenge, enjoy that special moment when luck deals a wonderful result.... Well, I suppose that summed me up at the time I decided to combine enjoyment of photography with the above. Being fortunate in having a base in the Rio Formosa Natural Park and getting fit after an illness I was taking frequent walks around the area and found myself taking a greater interest in the bird life in the Park. Using binoculars first but keen on photography, I started taking
pictures, initially with a small digital camera. Luck and patience worked and some images were, I thought, quite acceptable. Enthused, I upgraded the camera and lens, and found out quite soon that of course you do get what you pay for, but more than adequate equipment can be reasonably purchased. One of the pleasures on the walks has been watching the flamingos on the saltinas. Timid but beautiful birds, and very photogenic! Soon I was building up a library of pictures for my own enjoyment and it quickly became apparent that careful filing was important, with sub categories (in my case for flamingos: Standing, Swimming, flying, and a recent category "Ringed" *but more of that later.) Now using both the small and better camera, I was quickly finding out the difficulties of light,

A begginers look into bird watching and photography
Bird photography movement, depth of field and range, not to mention the total lack of sympathy of the subject when attempting to "capture" them! Challenges to be met! Spending some time on the salt flats also gave many opportunities to expand the selection to the many other birds, both migratory and resident. It was now essential to get hold of good reference material and I turned to: • Algarve Wildlife Ray Tipper ISBN 9780956054418 • Algarve Birds Dr Manfred Temme ISBN 9789729759031 • Collins Pocket Guide , Birds of Britain and Europe. ISBN 0002198940 • Finding Birds in South Portugal Dave Gosney ISBN 9781907316401
www.simply-algarve.com
Now expanding my interest, the images of Storks, Spoonbills, Gulls, Waders, and almost anything that moved (which created an identity crisis), built up in the files. Time to try to be a little more selective, and my interest was moving towards behavioral images, showing birds "working", (hunting, fishing, displaying etc.). I have read that many rarities have been discovered in recent years, including Reef Egret, Lesser Flamingo, Marbled Duck, Long-tailed Duck, White-headed Duck, Red-knobbed Coot, Marsh Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Wilson’s Phalarope, Pectoral Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs, Royal Tern, Forster’s Tern and White-winged Tern. Here my shortcomings on obsession kick in, and I find little interest in collecting species, and just takes what comes!

Glooby Ibis For the beginners there are excellent tour guides in the Algarve, and Tavira in particular has some of the most qualified and experienced guides to be found anywhere. They a reasonably priced and are a wonderful help to both beginners and experienced people. The help and encouragement that I have had from experts Ray Tipper (.***.) and Peter Dedicoat (www.algarvebirders.com) has been superb. So, what to do with the ever growing library of images on the computer? Please do not think that there is an easy sell, on-line or elsewhere, get lucky and maybe you may be able to sell unique pictures, but generally I find that just sharing my interest is rewarding enough. Share the images, spread the interest and the understanding of the wonders that are around us leads to better protection of the whole general ecology. I have derived enormous pleasure from watching the bird life around me in the Algarve, New experiences, new friends, and above all relaxation when out and about. I know that its not for everyone but if you're interested, give it a try!

Managing your international payments Premier FX’s Account Manager Cathryn Evans keeps us up to date with the latest currency news.
So after Brexit, where are things headed now?
T
hings were put in to motion quicker than predicted in the UK and we saw a new Prime Minister in July rather than October. Speculation of how things may pan out, not just in the UK but also within the European Union itself is rife, and one thing the financial markets do not like is uncertainty. This is what leads to volatility between the major currencies. So where are things headed now? As Teresa May took up her position as PM in the UK, along with appointing a new cabinet, we saw an injection of some certainty back to the GBP but still not at levels we saw prior to the referendum. We saw the GBP/EURO around the 1.20 mark but the GBP/USD hit a 31 year low. The Bank of England gave some hope with not cutting interest rates until some stability is back in the UK, but this doesn’t mean it won’t happen at some point. If it does we could see the GBP weaken again as markets take their funds and put them into higher returning currencies. On the other hand in the Eurozone we have the Italian banks struggling and the European Central Bank will likely have to do something and this could
cause the Euro to weaken if the problem isn’t dealt with swiftly. As we get further economic and political announcements, in the UK, USA and the Eurozone we will see a lot of volatility. It is extremely unlikely we will see the levels we had prior to ‘Brexit’ for sometime, and until then we will have to expect a bumpy ride. There is an upside for many people though. The weakness in Sterling is good news for those wishing to buy goods and services in the UK – great for those buying property or those transferring funds back - and of course for businesses importing products from “Poundland”! This has been a welcome break from the highs the GBP was enjoying. How to submit a claim for errors in personal income tax (IRS). Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters If you have received the settlement of your IRS and detected any errors made by the Tax Authorities on their calculations, find out what are your rights and how to issue a formal complaint.
42
T
he last submission of IRS tax returns, relating to income in 2015 has raised many doubts among taxpayers. The fact that it was the first time tax returns were filed, after the entry into force of several new IRS laws, forced taxpayers to adopt new procedures in relation to its IRS. On the other hand, the computer system of the Tax Authorities has been changed to accommodate the implementation of the new rules and has undergone several improvements and updates during the period of submission of the tax return. This resulted in delays in the settlement and processing of reimbursements to many taxpayers (but, despite the delays from the previous years, the repayments are still ongoing within the legal deadlines) and also difference between the simulations made at the time of the submission and the IRS bills. If you have received the settlement note and realized that there was an error on the calculation of the final accounts, you may file a complaint to the Tax Authorities. But beware: before you decide to submit a claim it is important to check if you have reason to do it. For instance, when it relates, for example to errors in withholding taxes, in the case where the entities to whom the taxpayer worked did not declare those amounts. If the taxpayer has with him a proof of the actual values of withholding taxes that were held last year, he must submit a complaint and attach the documents that prove the merits of that complaint. Do not forget the legal deadlines. If you are going to issue a complaint, do not forget that you must do so within the legal deadlines. In the case of complaints related to the settlement of the IRS, taxpayers may do it within 150 days of notification of the settlement. An important point: the rules indicate that taxpayers may not have both an internal appeal and ask for judicial review on the same fact. & It cannot be made a complaint, when it has been lodged judicial review on the same basis & This means that first the taxpayers must issue a complaint with the Tax Authorities and wait for the decision. If it is unfavourable to the taxpayer and the taxpayer is still not convinced, then he can advance to the hierarchical appeal and/or request a judicial review. Tracking the evolution of the claim? After presenting the administrative claim you can track the status and progress of your complaint at the Tax Portal. The system will tell you the process number, the date and details of the tax in question, the tax office where the complaint has been filed and the process situation on a given date. Here the various stages through which the internal appeal process can pass, according to
the information contained in the Tax Web Portal. Initiation: The process was initiated in the Finances Computer System Portal Instruction: finance services are to process the file containing the information required for the decision. Waiting for distribution: The process has not yet been distributed to technical for consideration. Assessment: The process has already been distributed to the technician who is preparing the decision. Referred to the Finance Director: The case was referred to the regional peripheral organ of tax administration, the competent authority for the decision. For Preliminary Hearing: the draft decision has been prepared, pending the exercise of the right to a prior hearing of the complainant. Await Decision: A prior hearing has been exercised and the new elements raised at that hearing will be taken into account in the decision to be taken. Termination by Upheld: The process was terminated, and the claim of the complainant was upheld. Partial Deferral: The process was terminated, and the claim of the complainant deserved partial success. Rejection by Extinction: The process was terminated, since the claim of the complainant deserved appointment. Filing for Extinction: The process was terminated by objection of inadmissibility or because the person concerned, upon written request, gave the procedure. Termination for transfer to another service of Finance: The process was terminated because the tax office which was established was not competent for the decision. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your personal situation, whether this is related to IRS or any other tax advice.

GARDENS
Grow your own insect repellent
Urban legend or truth? Are there really plants that repel insects that can be planted in your garden or around the patio to prevent mosquitoes from hanging around where you wish they didn't?
U
nfortunately, the answer is no. Simply planting juniper shrubs, rosemary, or citronella grass or any other plant at the back door won't stop mosquitoes from buzzing around the patio during the dinner hour. What will keep insects like mosquitoes and gnats away are the essential oils contained in the plant's leaves, which are obtained by crushing the leaves. There are a variety of both wild and cultivated plants that repel mosquitoes. Almost anywhere you go, it is reasonable to find several plant species that you can use to ward off these pesky critters. Plant-based mosquito repellents are especially useful for people who spend a great deal of time outdoors. It is important to note that it is compounds found within the plants that do the repelling. These compounds need to be released from the plant to unlock the mosquito-repelling qualities. Depending on the species of plant, they can be released by, either crushing, drying, or infusing the plant into an oil or alcohol base that can be applied to skin, clothing, or living spaces. Others are best used as a smudge, which releases the compounds in a smoke. Just standing near living plants that repel mosquitoes
44
is often not effective. Below are separate lists of wild and cultivated plants that are known to repel mosquitoes: CULTIVATED PLANTS THAT REPEL MOSQUITOES: Citronella Grass (Cymbopogon nardus) is the most popular cultivated plant used for repelling mosquitoes. Its oil, citronella oil, is the primary ingredient in most natural insect repellents sold in stores. Products applied to the skin are most effective. It grows in tropical regions. Pelargonium citrosum also known as the Mosquito Plant is a genetically engineered geranium hybrid with a unique characteristic: it repels mosquitoes! It is easily grown as a potted patio plant, and easily enjoyed for its attractive foliage and sweet lemony scent, as well as for its mosquito repelling powers. It produces a leafy, attractive, foot-tall plant during its first season. The Mosquito Plant was created by a Dutch botanist, who genetically
incorporated traits of the Chinese citronella grass into a scented African geranium. The resulting cultivar still had the growth and habit of the geranium, and its sweet lemony citronella scent. Citronella is the substance in citronella candles, which have long been used to deter mosquitoes. It doesn't harm them, but they don't like citronella and avoid it. It is most effective as a repellent if you crush a few leaves and rub them on your skin. This releases the citronella and a sweet perfume. Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a common garden plant that can be used to repel mosquitoes. The crushed plant can be applied directly to the skin or the
www.simply-algarve.com
dried plant can be infused in an oil, such as olive oil. ADDITIONAL CULTIVATED PLANTS THAT REPEL MOSQUITOES: Peppermint (Mentha piperita) Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) Marigolds (Tagetes spp.) Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) Garlic (Allium sativum) Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) The basic recipe is as follows: Take 2 cups of catnip leaves or 1 cup of rosemary leaves, stems removed and crush in a mortar and pestle. Alternatively you can use a rolling pin to crush the leaves. Place the leaves in a clean jar. Fill the jar with 3/4 cup of rice vinegar or vodka, or if you use oil, 3/4 cup of jojoba or almond oil. Let the mixture sit for a couple of weeks, gently stirring at least once a day. Strain mixture into another clean jar and your homemade bug spray is ready to make its debut! WILD PLANTS THAT REPEL MOSQUITOES Vanilla Leaf (Achlys triphylla) is a plant native to the northwest and Japan. Indigenous peoples were known to hang bundles of the dried plants in and around their dwellings to keep mosquitoes and flies away. The plant can be rubbed on the skin fresh or dried to deter mosquitoes. Sagebrush, Wormwood, and Mugwort (Artemisia spp.) are in the same genus (plant grouping). All of these species can be used as an aromatic smudge that is known to be a very effective mosquito repellent. The crushed leaves can also be applied directly to the skin. These species grow in the drier habitats of the west, including the plains, deserts, and mountainous regions. Pineapple weed (Matricaria matricarioides) is a common weedy
species that grows all over North America. It can be found growing in lawns, edges of roads, and other disturbed areas. The aromatic crushed plant can be applied to the skin to help repel mosquitoes. ADDITIONAL WILD PLANTS KNOWN TO REPEL MOSQUITOES: Nodding onion (Allium cernuum) Wild bergamot (Mondarda fistulosa) Snowbrush (Ceonothus velutinus) Sweetfern (Comptonia peregrina) Cedars (Thuja spp.) It’s important to note that insect repellents applied to the skin generally only last one to two hours. Frequent re-application is necessary. Also, when utilizing wild plants, internally or externally, always be sure to correctly identify the plant you are going to use. It is best to utilize field guides and work with someone who knows the plant well to avoid accidentally using a poisonous look-alike. ADDITIONAL TIPS ON REPELLING MOSQUITOES: In addition to using mosquito repelling plants, you may want to consider some other factors that can help keep mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes find their prey by following carbon dioxide and other components that animals breathe out. Many outdoors-people have noticed that mosquitoes have a greater attraction to people that have been eating processed, sugary foods, and less attracted to people eating more of a natural diet such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The processed food diet may make your odour and blood chemistry more attractive to mosquitoes. You can choose to eat less processed foods and sugars during the mosquito season. Additionally, diets high in garlic and onions have been noted to help reduce the attraction of mosquitoes. And finally we must remember that
although m a n y people swear by these natural remedies to keep insects away, they are not always guaranteed to work and in many occasion have now scientific facts to back up the claims made. I can only suggest that you try them for yourselves and see if you like many others find a more natural cure to the irritating seasons that we endure living in our warmer climate. Mark O'shaughnessy

The power of the ingredients lies in the way they are put together. It is in the combination that we find the
value of regional cuisine, these special combinations of simple ingredients lie at the core of what is Algarvean. The significance of the ingredients derives not simply from their taste but from the ethnic value they hold within a specific community. Regional cuisine is not composed of a strict list of ingredients and instructions but is formed and performed by cultural, ethnic and familial attachment to a specifically recognizable dish and forms a distinct part of the Algarvean identity.
'This low cost, easy to prepare, recipe makes a wonderful summer starter for supper with friends, or even as a main course, just double the portions. It works well with either rosé or white wine, and there is no cooking involved, so you can relax and stay cool on a hot day. What could be more perfect?'. CHEF´S HINTS: Tinned fillets of horse mackerel can be quite versatile. For a change add a pinch of ginger to the vegetables before refrigerating or put a little cinnamon in the apple jam. You can also change the vegetables, like using whatever is fresh and colourful in the markets, just mix them together with a few drops of olive oil and the orange and lemon juice. For an alternative main course, toast a few slices of brioche bread, put the apple jam on the bread. Place the mackerel and vegetables on the toast and top with onion slices, a few drops of olive oil and a few drops of orange and lemon juice and refrigerate.

PORTUGAL CHAMPIONS!
he Algarve joined the rest of the country in celebrating Portugal’s historic victory in the EURO Championships. A fantastic extra-time goal by former Swansea City striker Éder secured victory over hosts France. To lift the trophy Portugal had to overcome the weight of history. They had lost on each of the three previous occasions they had met France in competitive matches, and the last ten against their nemesis if you include friendlies. In addition on the five occasions Portugal have faced the host country at World Cup or EURO Championship finals, in 1966 (England), 1984 (France), 2002 (South Korea), 2006 (Germany) and 2008 (Switzerland), they lost all five matches. It was an injury, early in the game, that could have spelt disaster for the Portugal team of old. Cristiano Ronaldo was knocked off the ball by West Ham United star Dimitri Payet, a rough but fair challenge that left their captain clutching his left knee in pain. But this Portugal team buckled down and improved their game plan as time progressed. They finally got their just rewards, to lift their first major championship trophy after losing in the final on home soil, to Greece in 2004.

P
rimeira Liga champions Benfica produced some classy moments in a quality display to beat Derby County 4-0 and in the process win the pre-season Algarve Cup. The Eagles produced some breathtaking football and there were moments of individual brilliance that had fans blinking in disbelief. Admittedly the Rams were without Richard Keogh, Jeff Hendrick, Cyrus Christie (Republic of Ireland) and Chris Baird (N.Ireland) who had played for their respective countries in France. Nelson Semedo, Rui Fonte, Andre Almeida and Salvio found the back of the net for Benfica. Tom Ince, son of former Manchester United and England international Paul Ince, went close for Derby. The three game tournament also featured another Primeira Liga side Vitoria Setúbal who finished second and Derby County third.
