WELCOME

Welcome... ....To our September Issue, a dining out special. Brace yourself for the pictures you are about to see: food, food and even more sumptuous food. Yes... this month I have eaten myself all around Almancil, I just could not help myself!

We have a fantastic selection of restaurants for you to read about. Not just the food, but the people behind the scenes, their stories and the view from their side of the table. Firstly we joined Monica, Luis and Joao at Monica’s Restaurant in Vale do Lobo for their monthly Wine & Supper Club where we had an amazing night and learned so much from the Wine Representative. Our team also met-up with Ricardo, Celia and Johnny at ‘Wild Fire’, the latest restaurant from the Parrilla Group. A very different concept in the food choices we make, the way they are cooked and not to mention the ethical mission statement of the ‘Never Ever' policy. We were then introduced to the Lennon family in Almancil who own and run Lennon’s Bar & Grill, what a treat to meet the whole family! After tasting dish after dish I could only just fit through the door when it came time to leave. If all that was not enough, Lee from BBQ’s Algarve gave us a tour of his specialist shop in Almancil. Lee is an expert in the field of outdoor cooking and offers a bespoke service using only the top names in Barbeques for quality and value. As always there are News, Health, Finance and Sports articles for you to read. I will leave you to enjoy them while I have a lay down. he first concert in the Loulé Summer series was held last night at the Duarte Pacheco monument venue where the internationally acclaimed fado singer Mariza electrified the audience. Against a backdrop of a lightning storm sweeping across Faro in the near distance, Mariza’s vocal range was put to the test by a series of Fado songs, traditional and modern, including a duet with Nuno Guerreiro who happened to be in the front row of the audience and was invited on stage. The packed Loulé audience of Portuguese and an encouraging number of foreigners, had no shyness in joining in as the singer performed for over two hours. This was the only Algarve concert on Mariza’s current tour schedule which sees her heading next to Cascais for August 26th and then on to London, followed by a US tour to Boston, New York, New Jersey, Amherst, New Bedford, Fairfield and San Francisco at the end of October. Another artist invited onto the stage was soul singer Luís Caeiro who joined the fadista in a duet, to the delight of the audience. The Loulé Summer series of August concerts continues with a free concert in Quarteira this coming Saturday 20th with the Orquestra do Algarve and the fado singer Katia Guerreiro.

ALGARVE: LOWEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN PORTUGAL

F

or the first time since records began, the Algarve was the region that registered the lowest unemployment rate (8.1%) in Portugal. The data concerns the second quarter of 2016 and shows the Algarve leading Portugal’s employment recovery. It is even more impressive if you consider that in the first half of 2013 the region registered a significant 20.1% unemployment rate – more than double what it is now.

uring the month of July, 3,553 people have been treated in 32 temporary health centers at the Algarve’s most popular beaches. The units, set up by the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve in collaboration with the Portuguese Red Cross, are part of the summer plan to reduce the pressure on hospitals by treating minor injuries on site. Of the total consultations carried out, 1,292 were due to fish, spider and insect bites, 477 for blood pressure problems, 128 to administer injections and 116 to perform blood glucose tests. Only 43 people needed to be referred onwards to hospital or other health facilities. Of the total number of patients, 74% were not resident in the Algarve region - of these, 78.7% were from other regions of Portugal and 21.2% were foreigner holidaymakers. The remaining 26% were Algarve residents. The beach health units with the highest number of patients so far have been those in Monte Gordo, Manta Rota, Armação de Pera, Praia dos Tomates and Armona Island.

HEALTH

Aloe Vera Aloe vera is a popular medicinal plant that has been used for thousands of years, best known for treating skin injuries, but also has other health benefits.

loe vera is a thick, shortstemmed plant that stores water in its leaves. It is widely used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries, and has an estimated annual market value of $13 billion globally. Aloe vera is well recognized by its thick, pointed and fleshy green leaves, which can grow to about 12-19 inches (30-50 cm) in length. Each leaf is full of a slimy tissue that stores water, which makes the leaves thick. This slimy, water-filled tissue is the “gel we associate with Aloe vera products. The gel contains most of the bioactive compounds in the plant, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and ANTIOXIDANTS. Antioxidants are important for health. Aloe vera gel contains powerful antioxidants, which belong to a large family of substances known as polyphenols. These polyphenols, along with several other compounds in Aloe vera, can help inhibit the growth of certain bacteria that can cause infections in humans. Bottom Line: Aloe vera contains various powerful antioxidant compounds. Some of these compounds can help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. HEALING OF BURNS Aloe vera is most commonly used as a topical medication, rubbed onto the skin rather than eaten.

It has long been known as a treatment for sores, particularly burns, including sunburns. In fact, the FDA first approved Aloe vera ointment as an over-the-counter medication for skin burns back in 1959. Studies suggest that it is an effective topical treatment for first- and seconddegree burns. A review of 4 experimental studies found that Aloe vera could reduce the healing time of burns by around 9 days compared to conventional medication. The evidence for Aloe vera helping to heal other types of wounds is inconclusive. Bottom Line: Applying Aloe vera to burn wounds appears to accelerate the healing process. The evidence is inconclusive for other wound types. DENTAL PLAQUE. Tooth decay and diseases of the gum are very common health problems. One of the best ways to prevent this from happening is to reduce the build up of plaque (bacterial biofilms) on the teeth. In a mouth rinse study of 300 healthy people, 100% pure Aloe vera juice was compared to the standard mouthwash ingredient chlorhexidine. After 4 days of use, the Aloe vera mouth rinse was found to be just as effective as chlorhexidine in reducing dental plaque. Another study found similar benefits of Aloe vera mouth rinse when used over

a 15 to 30 day period. Aloe vera does this by killing the plaqueproducing bacterium Streptococcus mutans in the mouth, as well as the yeast Candida albicans. Bottom Line: When used as a mouth rinse, pure Aloe vera juice is just as effective at reducing dental plaque buildup as regular mouthwash. MOUTH ULCERS. Many people have experienced mouth ulcers, or canker sores, at some point in their lives. They usually form underneath the lip, inside the mouth, and last for about 7-10 days. Studies have convincingly shown that Aloe vera treatment can accelerate the healing of mouth ulcers. In a 7-day study of 180 people with recurrent mouth ulcers, an Aloe vera patch applied to the area was effective in reducing the size of the ulcers. However, it did not out perform the conventional ulcer treatment, which is corticosteroids. In another study, Aloe vera gel not only accelerated the healing of mouth ulcers, it also reduced the pain associated with them. Bottom Line: Application of Aloe vera, either as a patch or gel, has been shown to aid in the recovery of mouth ulcers. Read more about Aloe vera here: www.authoritynutrition.com

A new restaurant concept from the Perrilla group is heating up Vila Sol

We visited the team Headed up by Ricardo and Jonnie at Wild Fire Restaurant the 1st bespoke smokehouse and grill in the Algarve. Wildfire is the latest addition to the successful Parrilla Group of unique and distinctive restaurants in the area. Do not be mislead, this is not just for meat lovers. The menu ranges from fresh meats, fish, with vegetarian and gluten free options. There is a wonderful menu of healthy options for children. The Wine List gathers inspiration from Portugal, France, and South American giving you the opportunity to take advantage of Wildfire’s own Premier Selections including organic and vegan wines. Their bar offers an array of drinks and cocktails including their ‘Signature Cocktails’, definitely not to be missed! Dining at Wild Fire is not just food for the excited palate - it is food for the soul. The Parrilla Group was founded from a

10

dream to bring an eating concept to life. The concept that food can be sourced and served that is 100% natural, fresh, free range, GMO Free and has no MSG flavour enhancers. In this day and age we demand more from our food and Wild Fire can certainly deliver this promise. Upon entering you will see their ‘Never Ever Policy’ displayed with great pride to ensure that whatever your choice, you can rest assured knowing that it will be an ethical one! In order to achieve this, the meat on the menu is brought in from Uruguay. The beef is raised from naturally grass-fed free roaming stock, which is both non GMO antibiotic and hormone free. The Company have a farm in Quelfes which will produce fruit and vegetable all grown organically. Even some of the cheese that is on offer in the restaurant is produced locally and made within strict guidelines.

All the beef is smoked in house either by Cold Smoking this includes the raw smoke infused steaks, salmon, cheese, milk and cream. Even the water used during the process is then used in the making of the bread. The Hot smoking is low and slow for the meats, creating the intense aromatic flavours. The grilling processes are traditional to ensure the unique Wild Fire trademark flavours cooked over organic holly oak. The restaurant itself, through intensive planning and designing was converted from a supermarket in October, 2015 into an impressive Open plan Dining area which enables the flow of a busy restaurant to seem effortless giving the space for both family and more intimate gatherings. During the winter months glass sliding walls close off the outside for that cosier feel. However, it is the ‘wall of fire’ that brings a dramatic flair to complete the evening. The decor follows the ethos of the

www.simply-algarve.com

Parrilla Group by its organic wholesome and natural feel from the artwork, mood lighting to the choice of dining furniture. The outside areas allow you to dine in comfort, or for a more relaxed feel, just enjoy a cocktail while the sun goes down at the bar. For Wildfire’s junior diners, there is an area specially designed for them. This includes a Kids Club with soft flooring and a trained member of staff to arrange a little face painting, or the producing of a little art work. Bluetooth headsets are issued for the children to view the cinema screen. Around the walls their artwork can be seen and of course Wild Fire’s Mascot ‘Sunny’ makes their Kids Club area a fun place to be. The team at Wild Fire is an international one lead by the manager Ricardo Cruz with a high experience in hotel and restaurant openings around the world. His eye for detail

11

and personal service make dining at Wild Fire a wonderful experience. The kitchen is headed by Executive Chef for the Parrilla Group Johnny Pratt, who has gained his international reputation by working in Switzerland, New York, Dubai, Caribbean, Ireland and Portugal. The staff are fully trained and involved in an intensive induction programme. The Company’s ethos aims to encourage development within its ranks and enables the team to work across all four of their enterprises creating a year round team. Celia Meira is head of Sales and Marketing originally from Paris. Celia brings years of experience developing all the design and creative processes within the Company, which give particular ‘signature notes’ that are ‘Parrilla’. Customer Service is high

12

on that list and this is reflected in a personalised ‘Customer Profile’ which works across the whole group. This records your personal preferences, favourite wines and any special requests that you may have whilst dining in any of their restaurant. The staff and family atmosphere make sure that you enjoy your time spent with them. All the team agree that to see guests enjoying their food and the many reviews they have thanking the staff for their time spent in the restaurant makes all the hard work worthwhile. As all great family teams plan for the future. We definitely got the feeling that new things are in store for us from the Parrilla Group. So let us see what comes next! REBUILDING The classifications of land and terms for rebuilding ruins in the countryside

T

he Algarve and the Alentejo are one the most beautiful quiet and unspoiled areas in Portugal. If you intend on settling here or even building your home in the peaceful countryside, it is important to know about the various existing different classifications of countryside plots in Portugal and the consequences for your building project. The two most common areas are called RAN and REN classified areas and here is what you need to know about them:: - The National Agricultural Reserve (RAN) plot is a plot that due to their characteristics, such as location and quality of soil, are predominantly classified to be used as farmland as they have a greater aptitude for this purpose. The RAN legislation establishes a set of constraints to the use of the plot and its aim is to preserve the soil.

16

- For a non-agricultural use of a RAN classified plot, the authorities have to be consulted and its approval has to be requested. This approval is comparable to a regular building application. If the RAN plot is the one you fall in love with there are several ways to get building permission: - As in RAN areas the preservation, reconstruction, alteration and extension of existing buildings is permitted, you have a chance to build your dream home, providing there is at least a ruin on this plot. This ruin should be recognisable as a building and not just be a pile of stones. Ideally your ruin should even show parts of a former roof. If that is the case you can suggest a reconstruction intervention, but be aware the intervention must ensure: - The building has to be integrated into the natural scope of land and countryside -The total build, including any eventual

planned extension, must not exceed 300 m2 of building area. Please note that an eventual swimming pool will also be part of the 300m2 this building area is for residential purposes only the pre-existing building (ruin) should be kept in its original constraint, meaning that volume wise the house shouldn't change and the number of previous existing floors can't be increased The original architectural appearance of the ruin should be preserved The new project should provide appropriate up-to-date habitation conditions and follow the building regulations: - a 2 storey building/ruin, can not become a 3 storey building but a basement under the new extended build area is a possibility. - The National Ecological Reserve (REN) is designed as a framework structure

following constrains: The overall build area, including your swimming pool may not exceed 250m2 You are only allowed to build, preserve, extend 50% of the clearly to identify ruin For example: if you buy a plot with a ruin 0f 200m2 you can refurbish the 200m2 and extend by 50% wich would be 100m2. However, as the maximum build tea is 250m2, the maximal extension permitted would be plus 50m2, instead of 100m2. It is not permitted to later the number of the existing stories - a 2 story biding/ruin, can not become a 3 story building Never the less an approval of a building project on REN or RAN is always very work intense and time consuming. Please consult your architect or your solicitor before you purchase your dream plot in order to understand if your dream house can be built on it.

and protection of productive agricultural and urban areas in order to safeguard the proper management of the territory and promote the conservation of nature and biodiversity, essential components of the biophysical support of our country. When plots are integrated into REN areas, the use in general is prohibited, unless the intended use is compatible with the objectives of ecological and environmental protection and prevention. As in RAN, in order to be able to build your home on a REN plot, the parcels must also contain a ruin. Thus the existing building must be licensed or hold a licence issued by the relevant Chamber to prove the date of construction. In order get approval from the building authorities, the CCDR (Coordination Committee of Regional Development) needs to inspect the viability of each project. This inspection occurs under very strict guidelines. Regarding the design of your house you are restricted to the

PEOPLE

Lennon s

The friendly family run restaurant and bar, where everyone knows your name.

Y

ou will definitely find a warm Irish welcome from the Lennon’s Family who own and run Lennon’s Irish Bar and Grill in Almancil. They have over the last 4 and half years established themselves in the area, becoming a local watering hole for visitors and residents alike. Fran, his wife Leona, together with their 3 children Aedammair, Aaron and Fionn, make this a real family business. Aaron is the Manager of the bar, while Aedammair and Fionn take part in the general running of the Pub and Grill. However, life for the Lennon’s has not always been in Portugal. In fact Fran was involved with the training of race horses in Ireland for many years. Fran and Leona actually met in Dublin, where they were both Ski Instructors. Life on the slopes, eventually lead to marriage and they started to plan for their new life together. They had visited America many times,

20

but the sight of the beautiful mountains overlooking Lake Tahoe seemed the perfect place for their Bar & Restaurant. During the next 12 years they established a successful bar & restaurant business also catering for countless weddings and private functions. Family life in Ireland beckoned once more and the Lennon’s returned to Ireland to be with family and made a decision to come to Portugal bringing with them Nana Bridie, who enjoyed life here in Portugal being surrounded by her family. At her 90th Birthday Party family came from far and wide including family from Australia, which gave everyone a day to remember! Sadly Nana Bridie passed away, but is still very much a part of their memories and lives here in Portugal. The Lennon’s understand family life and how precious time is spent together therefore, families come back year after year with their ever expanding members to visit and to celebrate

www.simply-algarve.com

their own family events and gatherings. Fran and Leona are always there to catch-up and to make sure everyone feels welcome. Being part of the community of Almancil is important for the Lennon family, they have helped local charities by holding Charity Nights for Goldra Dog Sanctuary, ‘The Center Algarve’ and various events through the Rotary Club to raise money where it is needed. Fran and Leona have always felt supported and welcomed by the local people, which for them makes this a ‘home from home’. As you can imagine, bringing a little of the own tradition to the community St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations are not to be missed at Lennon’s. Allowing a little of the ‘Irish spirit’, to be enjoyed by all. In last few years their menu has grown with demand offering a real tried and tested great family menu. Their Menu ranges

www.simply-algarve.com

from Grass-fed Uraguian Rib-eye Steaks, Baby Back Ribs as well as Irish Black Angus Beef Burgers to satisfy the hungriest of appetites. Not forgetting the Juicy Black Tiger Prawns, traditional Fish and Chips, and their special starter of tasty Buffalo Chicken Wings, whose recipe was brought back all the way from America! Children of course have their own menu, which is always special. They serve a fantastic traditional Sunday Roast Lunch for those who just cannot survive without it. If you prefer you can join them on Sunday evening for their Sunday BBQ cooked and served on the terrace from 7 p.m. is a great place to bring the whole family, offering value for money, as an ‘all you can eat’ price of 15 Euros. Of course a visit to Lennon’s would not be complete without an authentic ice cold draught drawn ‘Guinness’, which we all know is an art form to serve - drawn to perfection! This of

21

course I had to try, just for the magazine, you understand. This is by no means the only great Irish traditional attraction, Irish Whiskey is also a firm favourite! Christmas Lunch and New Years Eve are great traditional events at the restaurant and seem to always be filled with guests who have become friends. If you are thinking of joining them please make sure you book early. Why don’t you drop by and chat to Fran, Leona and Aaron

they have so many tales to tell, too many to tell here! Lennon’s opens everyday from 5 p.m. and from noon on Saturday and Sunday. Sealed into tins of brine or olive oil, it was during the first half of the 20th century that cans were given attractive packaging. During this period - when arte-deco was flourishing - skilled artists and designers were employed to draw attention to and illustrate the fine quality of the produce. The original designs - commissioned by Galeria Côrte-Real in Paderne - have been reproduced by printer, Peter Trew onto ceramic tile using modern techniques. The traditional designs have been turned into decorative art glowing with the original deep and rich colours, incorporating a battery

powered clock. These unique plaques are an original way to add interest to a Portuguese kitchen, or other less obvious places in the home. They are a reminder of the time when the Algarve shore was regularly visited by great shoals of sardines. Factories in

Olhão and Portimão became increasingly innovative creating sardine paste and accompaniments such as tomato sauces and oils flavoured with chillies. Sardines are still fished off the Portuguese coast but in strictly approved numbers. The industry has received the coveted ‘Blue Award’ presented by the Council of Marine Stewardship. Since sardines are far fewer in the Algarve only one canning factory remains but fortunately supplies are enough so that sardinhas assados grilled sardines – continue to be available in many beachside restaurants. As well as ceramic plaques the gallery also sells tins of sardines, tuna and olive oil stylishly packaged as they would have been more than a century ago. -Caroline Kain

is that there are numerous accesses to the magnificent golden beaches with nearly all having parking facilities immediately adjacent to the beaches. In autumn 2015 American equity firm Lone Star Funds announced a massive €1 billion development project representing one of the largest real estate developments in Portugal and providing strong backing for the Portuguese economy and the Algarve region. The new plan has promised around 700,000 square metres of development to the west of Vilamoura Marina, and the building of some 5,000 residential and holiday properties. The plan for Vilamoura will see the resort greatly improved with the marina increasing space for up to 1,000 vessels including giant super yachts turning it into one of the leading holiday destinations in Europe. The first announced construction project is now well underway with phase 2 of the L´Orangerie Development in full swing. Lone Star Funds development has started to drive thousands of direct and indirect jobs in construction, services, retail, etc.. and will continue to do so over the coming five to seven years. Although we are seeing a healthy revival in property sales in Vilamoura, the surrounding areas in the immediate vicinity are continuing to enjoy their fair share of property sales success. The areas such as Boliqueime, Alfontes, Tenoca, Benfarras and Vale Judeu offer a much more laid back approach to living that has great appeal for many

Calling all home owners! Are you interested in selling your property and in need of good advice? Here is our easy, step by step guide....

F

irst of all - Don’t Panic! Study your house documents and make sure you have everything you need. This can be a little daunting, especially with everything in a foreign language! If you don’t understand Portuguese, you can speak to your lawyer or architect or someone you know who speaks good Portuguese. Or come to us and we can help and support you. In order to sell your property you do need the following documents:: Certidão Permanente (company owned) or Registo Predial (privately owned)/Property Registration Certificate – Obtained from the Conservatória do Registo Predial /Land Registry Department. Caderneta Predial – Property Tax Document – Obtained from Finanças/Finance Department. Alvará/Licença de Utilização ou Construção or Document if Pre 1951 – Habitation licence or building permission – Obtained from the Câmara Municipal/Local Town Hall Certificação Energética/Energy Certificate – Qualified Portuguese company - Obtained via http://www.adene.pt/sce/micro/peritos-qualificados Ficha Técnica (If construction is after March 2004) – Obtained from the Câmara Municipal. Fiscal Number (personal tax number), Identity Card or Passport. Floor plans (can be obtained from your architect, the Câmara Municipal, or drawn up by an architect). If changes have been made or are going to be made, they must be approved by the Câmara Municipal and be up-to-date). Make a copy of all important house documents for your Real Estate Agent, never give any originals to anybody - unless it is your lawyer. The agents need a completed and signed contract by law, and these must have all of the relevant documents to be filled in on the contract. Get a professional valuation of your property - we can help to find the right price for your property in the market because we have years of experience. Search for the right real estate agency with a good reputation – one who has been in business for a long time and is proven to be successful. Do not use more than 3 real estate agents at a time because your property will be shown on the internet and real estate portals with similar photos and descriptions. This looks desperate and is not good for your sale. Take advantage of agents who offer special services and excellent

marketing for the sale of your property. Get your house ready to sell - that means it has to look attractive, clean, painted and nice. It is always better to have the house furnished. An empty house does not look inviting and the clients need something to get the ideas flowing, but by the same token, a cluttered house can also be offputting. You may love your nic-nacs and think your collection of antique bedpans looks great but take our advice - tuck them out of the way for any photo shoots! Pretend you are a client - then it will make things much easier for the sale. Have floor plans and a location plans ready for the agent and clients. There are so many properties for sale on the market, you need to get ahead of the competition and make sure that your property looks the best! Communicate with your agent - inform him about offers from other agents and keeping him up-to-date with the current situation, especially if your property is rented. Agents need to know when there are changeover days, in order for them to actually gain access to show your property. Honesty and good communication are the basis for a perfect relationship between owner and agent. The agent is spending time and money for your property via adverts, portals, press releases, articles, plus legwork and fuel. Always give, all important information regarding the sale of your property. When you have signed a Promissory Contract, take the property off the market and inform your agents. Please be aware: Only a signed Promissory Contract filled in by a lawyer is a binding document, nothing else. Good luck! The Togofor Homes team look forward to meeting you. Introducing

Cryotherapy at ‘Presty’

Freezing the fat cells away, allowing you to slim and reshape your body!

A

s promised we are here once again with the Team from ‘Presty’. This month we are featuring one of the cutting edge machines which Sophie has brought here to the Algarve. You will not find this therapy offered anywhere else in the Algarve! To introduce you to the ‘Cyro 21’ Machine here is a little information to help give you an insight as to how this technology works. The equipment is called Cyro 21. The suffix ‘Cyro’ derives from the greek ‘kryos’ meaning ice cold. The equipment is a system of cryotherapy working at temperatures between 15 degrees C to -10 degrees C. This creates the surface temperature of the skin to lower enabling through the process of apoptosis to permanently destroy fat cells by freezing. This is a painless and non-invasive treatment. As you can imagine this enables the reshaping of the body through a natural process. However, this machine has many other applications for both body and face. For the body, slimming and reshaping, skin firming, elimination of localized cellulite, lymphatic drainage and improving blood circulation. For the Face, tissue firming, skin rejuvenation, double chin reduction, bags and shadows, smoothing and skin brightness. To actually experience this yourself call into ‘Presty’ and chat to Sophie and her staff. They can answer any questions you may have and show you the before and after photos. Come see for yourself, they really are amazing! Call Sophie now at: (+351) 289 391 203

e were invited back to join Luis, Monica, Joao and their guests at their restaurant in Vale Do Lobo for the last gathering of their Wine and Supper Club, for this season. The evening gave us the chance to enjoy the carefully selected wines by Sra. Patricia from the Quinta do Encontro Vineyards together with the perfectly planned menu from the Head chef of Monica’s, Sr. Joao. The evening began as the sun was setting with an impressive Cold Sea table, served outside while the guests mingled. The table comprising of crab mouse, muscles, razor clams, stuffed crab, prawns with a classic sauce and fresh Portuguese oysters. Upon arrival sparkling Espumante was served with a little added fruit to bring out the summer theme. Once everyone was seated Sra. Patricia, gave a brief history of the vineyard followed by a description of each of the selected

wines for each course as they were served. There was an amazing array of dishes flowing from the kitchen. A starter of Avocado, Prawn, Salmon and Caviar was served followed by a Mini Seafood Cataplana Soup. For the main course we were treated to Rosemary Fish Skewers with a Herb Risotto and Truffle Sauce. The dessert of the evening was Profiteroles, Creme Patissiere with Chocolate Sauce. Each of the dishes has a little twist that is definitely the signature of Sr. Joao. After such an amazing evening I was hoping to find a quiet moment to talk to the man behind those kitchen doors. Sr. Joao’s kitchen is a team that is run calmly and smoothly with clear communication. It is a supportive environment and everybody works together. The kitchen is just an extension of the family. No ‘Gordon Ramsay style’ shouting in the kitchen at Monica’s!

supper club Sr. Joao told of his first love – Cakes. His mother worked in a bakery where Joao could be found as a child baking cakes with his mother after school and during holidays. As the years moved on Joao worked his way up the in the catering industry working here in Portugal and England with his brother Luis and Monica continuing his passion and flair for creating new and exciting award winning dishes. At home, his wife understand the demands of a busy kitchen, as she also is involved in the catering industry. Joao’s has two boys who both enjoy cooking however, it is his younger son aged 4 who seems to spend more time in the kitchen, as his elder brother's passion lies firmly in his football. Joao is also proud of his step-daughter who is studying in Loule and working in a local restaurant. FOOD

Naturally Delicious and Easy to Prepare By Marco Aleixo

Food made simple E

arly in the 90´s I worked in the holiday villa rental business and had begun to edit and publish the annual culinary guide to the Algarve 'Guia Gastronomico do Algarve". As part of my job I was privileged to visit many of the trade tourism show in Europe, including Internationale Tourismus-BÜrse Berlin, the World Travel Market in London, the International Tourist Exchange in Milan and the International Tourism Trade Fair in Madrid. I saw a lot of show cooking demonstrations at the booths of the various countries represented at the shows. One particular demonstration I remember well was the preparation of gravlax at a Scandinavian booth. They were promoting Scandinavian salmon and had prepared and presented it like little dishes of tapas. In all the years since I never forgot that fantastic salmon, sliced thinly, with an amazing taste, presented on toast with cucumber and arugula. Later, when I completed my cuisine diploma I created an Algarvean version of this wonderful dish using our wonderful salmon, fresh citrus fruits and fig brandy. I hope you enjoy it. This simple recipe will serve from 2 to 6 as a main course, with salad, depending on the size of your salmon fillet. I recommend a chilled green or white wine. Once again, there is no cooking involved, so you can relax and let the marinade do the work for you.

FINANCE

Managing your international payments Premier FX’s Account Manager Cathryn Evans keeps us up to date with the latest currency news.

Why do things like cutting interest rates and forthcoming elections cause exchange rate fluctuations?

A

s we move into Autumn we are seeing no respite for the GBP/EUR. The GBP is still struggling after the fallout of ‘Brexit’, casting a shadow over the market, and seeing the Bank of England cut interest rates. For those buying Euro’s it may take some time for levels to get back to 1.20’s; the winners are those purchasing sterling at this time. The GBP/USD is low, but this may change in the run up to the US presidential election. The dollar may weaken as markets pull out due to uncertainty. So why would cutting interest rates and forthcoming elections cause exchange rate fluctuations? Basically, the big banks and investors move their money to a stronger currency; a strong currency is where there is no political or financial unrest at that time. The Bank of England cutting its rates has made investors uncertain about the GBP and have been buying other currencies. Elections cause currency fluctuation due to political uncertainty in a country. Investors and banks tend to follow opinion and exit polls at election time – depending on which political outcome they see as a more secure option for the country. So this can strengthen or

weaken a currency. With so much uncertainty across the political world, we are not going to see a stable market for some time. For those wanting to buy sterling, the levels we are seeing could be good opportunities. Whether you have business transactions, property purchases/sales, car purchases, wages, topping up your bank account, pensions or an overseas wedding to plan we can help you take the uncertainty out of the currency fluctuations. We can look at fixing rates for you for a period of time. We will talk through your needs and come up with the best option to help save you money and give you the security of knowing what ever the market does you have something in place. Things you should know about capital gains tax. Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters You can’t hide from the tax department! Find out what tax you will have to pay and how to reduce this liability.

A

capital gain occurs when you sell something for more than you spent to acquire it. This happens a lot with investments, but it applies to personal property too. Are you planning to sell your home? Find out what tax you will have to pay and how to reduce this liability. You can’t hide from the tax department Any property transaction performed in Portugal must be reported to the Tax Authorities by the notary that executes the deed. This means that when you declare the sale on your tax return, the tax authorities already know of it, so if you fail to include this on your declaration, the taxman will be after you. It’s mandatory to file a tax return every time you sell a Portuguese property Irrespective of your tax domicile, if you sold a property located in Portugal, this means that you need to declare it in your tax return in Portugal. Regardless if there was a gain or not, it’s mandatory to make this declaration, which happens normally in May of the year following to the sale. Declaring the sale doesn’t mean you need to pay tax You only pay tax, if you had a gain on the transaction. So if you sell something for more than the purchase price, then the difference is a capital gain and that is reported on your taxes. Please note that the value you paid for the property needs to be adjusted, according to the inflation coefficient, applicable to the year of purchase. This means that the purchase value will increase for the capital gains calculation. Also, some expenses will be included in the tax return and deducted from any gain obtained. In which cases your sale is tax exempt It is possible to be exempt from tax in certain situations. For example if the property was acquired prior to 1989, it’s not liable to any CGT. Nevertheless, taxpayers will still have to declare these operations. But this is not the only tax exemption on capital gains from the sale of a property. The law provides, for example, that if you use the full amount of the sale of a property to buy another home (only applicable to tax residents and only in the sale of their primary residence), to build a home or purchase of land intended for the construction, you don’t pay tax on capital gains. Please note that this reinvestment of the gains, needs to happen within 36 months and can be done in any EU country.

the costs incurred with the purchase operation and sale of the property (eg IMT and registers on the purchase, real estate commission on the sale, etc). Taxpayers can also deduct costs incurred in property over the past five years, such as property refurbishments or other money spent to increase the value of the asset, including the cost of the energy certification. Residents vs Non-residents individual ownership If you are non-resident for tax purposes, the tax applicable to your capital gain, will be 28%. If however you are resident, the tax will be levied only on 50% of the gain and you will be taxed according to the tax bracket applicable to your overall income. However, if you are resident and this is your primary residence, gains can be rolled over if you buy another main residence. How does the reinvestment work? If you are resident and this is your primary residence, you can reinvest the proceedings of the sale on another purchase within the EU. This needs to be done on a purchase made between 24 months prior and 36 months after the sale. If the reinvestment in the new property is lower than the total sale, than the tax will be calculated pro-rata. Please note that if you declare on your tax return that you wish to reinvest the proceeding of the sale and then fail to do so, or reinvest a lower amount, the tax will be re-assessed and you will pay interest. Even if they do not plan to sell your home for now, it is important that you keep all supporting charges and make sure this invoices include your name and fiscal number and very important: the correct address of the property. The repayment of mortgage loans, incurred to purchase the property, will also be taken into consideration, when calculating the tax return. It’s important that you plan ahead, as you can’t afford any tax surprises. Please feel free to visit us for a friendly chat and ask us for a capital gain tax simulation on your property. If you fear that you may be liable for a big capital gain tax bill, then let’s study your case, we may encounter a way of substantially reduce this tax burden.

GARDENS

The red palm-tree Weevil

A pest that is causing devastation to palms across the world.

T

his month’s article has come about because of the recent spate of questions I have been asked about some very sorry looking palm trees in people's gardens, so I felt it would be good to inform you about the cause of many of these sick palm trees and give you a brief life history of the palm weevil because it has already devastated many palms in other countries and is showing more signs of doing the same to us. THE LIFE CYCLE All stages (egg, larva, pupa and adult) are spent inside the palm itself and the life cycle cannot be completed elsewhere. The females deposit about 300 eggs in separate holes or injuries on the palm. Eggs hatch in 2 to 5 days into legless grubs which bore into the interior of the palms, moving by peristaltic muscular contractions of the body and feed on the soft succulent tissues, discarding all fibrous material. The larval period varies from 1 to 3 months. The grubs pupate in elongate oval, cylindrical cocoons made out of fibrous strands. At the end of the pupation period which lasts 14 to 21 days, the adult weevils emerge. Thus the life cycle is about 4 months. EGGS The eggs are creamy white in colour, long and oval in shape. The average size of an egg is 2.6 mm long and 1.1 mm wide. LARVA The full grown larva is conical in shape and is a legless fleshy grub. It appears yellowish brown, while the newly hatched larva is yellowish white in colour, with a brown head.

44

The length of the full grown larva is 50 mm and the width is 20 mm. The head is brown in colour and bent downwards. Mouth parts are well developed and strongly chitinized, which enable the grub to burrow into the trunk. However, the grub requires a moist environment. COCOON When about to pupate the larva constructs a cocoon of fibres from palm. The cocoon is oval in shape, with an average length of 60 mm and a width of 30 mm. PUPA The pupa is at first cream coloured but later turns brown. The head is bent ventrally, the rostrum reaching the tibiae of the first pair of legs. The antennae and eyes are quite prominent. The elytra and wings are brought down ventrally, passing underneath the femora and tibiae of the second pair of legs, overlapping the third pair of legs and meeting in the middle of the abdomen. The average length of the pupa is 35 mm and the width is 15 mm. ADULT The adult weevil is a reddish brown cylinder with a long prominent curved snout. It varies considerably in size and is about 35 mm in length and 12 mm in width. The head and rostrum comprise about one third of the total length. The mouth parts are elongated in the form of a slender snout or rostrum, which bears a small pair of biting jaws at the end

www.simply-algarve.com

and a pair of antennae near the base. The rostrum is reddish brown dorsally, and ventrally it is dark brown. In the male the dorsal apical half of the snout is covered with a pad of short brownish hairs; the snout of the female is bare, more slender, curved and a little longer. The antennae consist of the scape and funicle. The eyes are black and separated on both sides of the base of the rostrum. The pronotum is reddish brown in colour and has a few black spots. These black spots are variable in shape, size and number. The elytra are dark red, strongly ribbed longitudinally, and do not cover the abdomen completely. The wings are brown in colour and the weevils are capable of strong flight. The male weevil has a tuft of soft reddish brown hairs along the dorsal aspect of the snout; it is absent in the female. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF DETECTION Early detection of infestation of the Red Palm Weevil is difficult as the larvae that damage the palm live inside the stems and base of leaves. Unfortunately, symptoms of infestation are not visible until it is often too serious

www.simply-algarve.com

for treatment. Signs of infestation include: leaves of the adult palm crown wilt and die; holes in the leaf bases; chewed fibre at the base of stem or edge of leaves. Apparently, by the time these external symptoms are observed the damage is usually sufficient to kill the tree and if you place your ear against the palm you can hear the lavae munching away! CONTROL PROCESSES Field sanitation and cultural practices are one of the important components to prevent weevil infestation. 1 Clean the crown of palms periodically to prevent decaying of organic debris in leaf axils. 2 Avoid cuts and injuries. 3 When green leaves are cut, cut them 120 cm away from the base. 4 Cutting of steps in palms for easy climbing is to be avoided, as this provides sites for egg laying by weevils. 5 As palms affected by leaf rot and bud rot diseases are more prone to weevil infestation, they are to be treated with suitable fungicides; after that, application of any insecticide to prevent egg laying by weevils is essential.

45

6 Destroy all dead palms harbouring the pest by cutting and burning. MECHANICAL CONTROL Dead palms or palms beyond recovery are to be split open, exposing the different stages of the pest present inside and the debris, including the out logs and crowns, are to be burned. Trapping the Weevils: Trapping the weevils and destroying them is another method by which weevil populations can be brought down. BIOLOGICAL CONTROL: No effective biological agent, which can be employed for the biological control of the pest has been found. CHEMICAL CONTROL : Preventive. The wounds produced on palms due to cultural practices and other wounds are favourite sites of oviposition by the female weevils. Treatment of such wounds and soaking of palms with insecticides can be an effective way to prevent RPW entry to palms through wounds. Curative. Once infestation is detected in a palm, curative

control has to be applied. If the infestation is in the crown, remove the affected and damaged portions and apply insecticide suspension. In case of infestation in the trunk, the infested part should be cleaned and plugged with a mixture of mud and insecticide.  The only effective control is to cut down all infested palms and destroy them at an early stage so the nests of larvae cannot hatch and repopulate an area. The trunk of the palm needs to be split open and all stages destroyed. Burning the head does not kill the stages in the middle of the trunk. Thus, the whole trunk should be chopped and burned. All these methods of control and eradication are best left to experts and for that reason should you have any palms that look like they are showing signs of infection then I would recommend contacting someone like the Palm Doctor at www.palmdoc.eu who can advise and deal with your problem safely and quickly preventing any further cross contamination. GOLF

Uneven lies – Uphill Lie From Monte Rei Golf and Country Club.

D

uring a round of golf you will no doubt be required to play a variety of shots from a variety of slopes with the ball occasionally finishing on an uphill or downhill slope making shot selection and execution difficult. By understanding how these uneven lies are likely to affect the flight of the ball will enable you to make the necessary adjustments in aim and club selection to produce the most accurate results. The most common tendencies from an uphill lie are pulling, chunking and underclubbing primarily due the forces of gravity attracting the player toward

48

the low ground. To compensate for the effects of an uphill lie, these tips will help you play the shot consistently and with better results. Take a stronger lofted club than you would from an even lie because the angle of the slope tilts the clubface back, adding loft and therefore reducing the distance the ball will travel. Choke down on the grip for more control. Position the ball in the centre of your stance. Try to recreate the angle of your shoulders at address when playing from a flat lie. If your shoulders are too

level, you'll stick the clubhead steeply into the ground at impact. Aim to the right an amount sufficient to compensate for the slope as the release is earlier due to reduced rotation of the body caused by the slope. Don't swing too hard: Go at 70 or 80 percent to keep your balance. WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS AT ALGARVE STADIUM

F

ootball fans in the Algarve can look forward to giving a warm welcome to the EURO 2016 Champions, Portugal, when they play their World Cup qualifier against Latvia on Sunday 13th November at the Algarve Stadium, Faro. Before then Portugal will have played Switzerland in Basel on the 6th September and entertained little Andorra, at home, in Aveiro on the 7th October. Other teams in Portugal’s group are the Faroe Islands and Hungary. Gibraltar, the newest member of FIFA, will once again play their home games at the Algarve Stadium. Greece are their first visitors on Tuesday 6th September kick-off 7.45pm with Belgium due on the 10th October. The Algarve Stadium will also host the League Cup (Taça da Liga) semi-finals and finals over five days at the end of January 2017. Current champions Benfica have won the trophy in six of the last seven seasons and the last time the final was played at Estádio Algarve, in 2010, they beat FC Porto 3-0. Unfortunately any chance that SC Portimonense and SC Olhanense had of progressing in the competition evaporated when they lost their first round ties.

SC FARENSE APPEAL REJECTED

arense, who were relegated from the Segunda Liga at the end of last season, have issued a strongly worded Press Release criticising the football authorities for not taking action regarding the arrest of officials on the final weekend of last season. The statement includes the following: “It is recalled that on that final day, the Judicial Police arrested sports officials and players, on a complaint by the Portuguese Football Federation, suspected of corruption and matchfixing sports results. Among the suspects were the President and Sports Director of Leixões SAD, however since then there has been a ‘deafening’ silence.” An appeal by SC Farense was rejected but the club may still take their case to the civil courts.

In golf croquet, a hoop is won by the first ball to go through each hoop. Unlike association croquet, there are no additional turns for hitting other balls. The winner of the game is the player/team who wins the most hoops. The Doubles event takes places on the 7th/8th September with the Open Championship being contested over the weekend of the 9th to 11th September.
