LOULÉ’S MED FEST ON THE MAP AS AWARDS PILE UP

Sources: www.algarvedailynews.com

L

oulé’s annual Med Fest has won the award for the Best Medium Sized Festival in the Iberian Peninsula at the 2nd edition of the Iberian Festival Awards at a ceremony in Barcelona. This award category is for festivals that receive an audience of between 1,500 and 10,000 people per day, with growth potential, and are considered creative festivals. Med Fest was also nominated by the jury as a finalist in the categories of Best Touristic Promotion and Best Cultural Programme and Contribution to Sustainability. The categories were voted on by the public with Med Fest also a finalist for Best Line-Up and Best Performance in Portugal. For the council, “this award reflects the importance of the international appeal

that the Med Fest has achieved and recognises the work carried out by the Med Fest events office and the production technicians, media Partners and especially the public,” said mayor, Vítor Aleixo. The Iberian Festival Awards aim to reward and recognise those who contribute to the success of events at organisational, production, logistics, and branding levels. The Historic Zone of Loulé will host the Med Fest 2017 on June 29 and 30, July 1 and 2 with 500 hours of music at 42 concerts on 6 stages over 4 nights. The city center will be transformed into a giant Mediterranean bazaar with food, activities and a celebration of World Music with artists from Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America joining European musicians to fill the programme.

L

oulé council has awarded a road project to link the EN396 to Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago in Almancil. The 2.2 kilometre section between the EM 5272 (Almancil – Quarteira) and the VNC 522 (Vale do Lobo - Quinta do Lago) will naturally include a new roundabout with the budget of €2.2 million. The work is planned to take a year with the council justifying the spend on tourism as the route is within one of the main tourism areas of the Algarve. The new road will “make it possible to improve the image for the many tourists who pass here throughout the year.”

FARO’S BUSINESSES ISSUED WITH OPENING AND CLOSING TIMES

F

aro’s shops, bars and eateries are to have their hours set by the council in a move that ends the rights of owners to set their own opening and closing times. The council approved a regulation document on March 6th which is set to be enacted, ending the liberal regime set up at the end of 2005, according to Sul Informação. Shops can open between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., cafes, restaurants and snack bars from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., bars with an area for dancing, of not less than 100 m2, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. with nightclubs opening from 10:00 p.m. and closing by 6:00 a.m. Hospitals, pharmacies, medical and veterinary clinics, tourist enterprises and local accommodation, homes, funeral agencies, car parks, fuel stations, establishments located in transportation terminals, convenience stores and bakeries, can be open 24-hours a day. The council also is insisting on noise suppression systems and

6

measuring equipment for outlets open after midnight. An approved noise suppression unit must be installed by Jan 2018. The council says it consulted widely with the police, unions, security forces, employers’ associations, consumer associations, parish councils and the general public being included in the fact-finding stages. Rogério Bacalhau, the Faro mayor, says “this is a decisive contribution to harmonise economic activity with the sleep that people need so as to increase the quality of life of those who live in areas with the highest concentration of night life.” The new regulations, claim the mayor, will “guarantee better conditions for all the professionals who have establishments in our city, providing greater security and attractiveness for all those who wish to visit and have fun in our city,” added the mayor. The proposal that has been passed was the same one that was rejected in June last year.

ART

INK ART

Meet Artist Andrea Rozario who came about this fascinating art form from her love of jewellery making.

A

ndrea Rozario from Essex, spent many years in the financial sector, and studied at the Birmingham School of Jewellery where she was inspired by Les Curtis, her professor and mentor. Her passion and expertise for making beautiful pieces of jewellery using Lampwork and Electroforming, together with her curiosity and enthusiasm has progressed into creating unique pieces of modern art works. Andrea now spends her time in the Algarve to concentrate fully on her specialised form of work.

8

Lampworking is the ancient art of a type of glasswork where a torch or lamp is primarily used to melt the glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements. Lampworking is now used to create artwork, including beads, figurines, marbles and small vessels. It is also used to create scientific instruments as well as glass models of animals and botanical subjects. Andrea uses the Lampworking combined with a process called Electroforming. This concept is the

Electroforming Art work

same as electroplating but on non metalic objects like glass. The beads are placed into an acid bath where copper annodes are attracted to the cathode (usually a silver layer painted on to the glass.). The coating “grows” as the current runs through the acid bath creating a connection with the cathode - ie the bead. the final result is either silver or gold plated. Using these two processes Andrea creates the beautiful pieces of Jewellery you see in the following pictures. Andrea’s art work is created using a mixture of alchohol ink and resin. The inks are used with specialist paper or tiles so that they are not absorbed. The various inks will both attract and repel, used in conjunction with pure alchohol and a number of different techniques to create what you see in the artwork. This is then coated in resin to create a high gloss 3-D effect which is extremely durable and resistent to UV light. Corte-Real gallery in Paderne is proud to display Andrea’s fine art and will be receiving new artwork in early April. er work is individual offering pieces of various colours and design and achieves an almost moving picture. BUSINESS PEOPLE

An evergreen investment

From greens to box-type hedges, we check out Grasshopper greens latest synthetic grass products.

G

rasshopper Greens was established in 2005 to introduce top-quality synthetic putting greens to the Algarve golf market. Deceptively realistic, these closely replicate the playing characteristics of natural greens to offer a constant-use practice facility. In 2014 the company was contracted to install the prestigious Pro Putting Garden, a 27-hole mini-golf visitor attraction in Lagos, aimed at novices and seasoned golfers alike. Yet the golf market is just one area of specialism nowadays, as Grasshopper Greens offers a wide range of synthetic grass products for specific surfaces - tennis courts, soccer pitches and croquet lawns. The business has also broadened to meet demand for a range of domestic applications: lawns, patios, roof terraces, verandas, pool surrounds, even safe play areas for kids. Their most recent innovation is high-quality artificial hedge - either a box-type hedge or a tealeaf-style bush – which provides an immaculate, no-maintenance leafy border for any garden or patio. Company director Martin Edwards explains: “In the Algarve environment, where lawns aren’t naturally sustainable, where water conservation is a growing issue and water bills are rising steeply, many homeowners are looking at the long-term

12

savings offered by synthetic lawns. Our lawns bring a realistic, lush and beautifully manicured aspect to all kinds of outdoor areas, requiring minimal maintenance - and no watering!” Grasshopper Greens uses the finest-quality products from Dutch and German manufacturers, offering the most advanced fibre technology. Martin underlines this necessity: “All too often I’ve seen the problems that occur with cheap products on the market, usually from the Far East. I completely avoid these, and the products I offer, carry an 8-year warranty plus a 5-year installation guarantee.” The company prides itself in being the longest-established, and one of the only specialist synthetic grass companies in Portugal with a professionally-trained team of installers, now with over 10 years’ experience. They offer a complete design & installation service or can also sell synthetic lawn direct ‘off-the-roll’. Martin concludes: “Grasshopper Greens takes absolute pride in delivering a first-class service: the best products, the highest quality workmanship – and an evergreen investment!” Contact Martin and the team on (+351) 910 365 071 or (+351) 289 093 387 or visit their website: www.grasshoppergreens.com

Mark lauterslager, partner of the Sustainable superstore advises us on making the most of mood lighting.

Choose the correct lighting!

M

ark Lauterslager founded Sulsolar in 2009, focusing on solar lights and LED lighting solutions. Today his business stands for service, high quality, competitive and fair pricing. Before they install their LED’s they often test several types of lights so the client can see the end result and not end up with the wrong lighting. Choosing the tone and colour of your lighting can make or break the ambience you want to create. Therefore choosing the right light for the right space is of great importance. Sulsolar is invested in offering the right lighting solution for private homes, shops, restaurants and hotels. They try to achieve creating the right atmosphere every time and everywhere. They offer their services in Portuguese, Dutch, English and German. LED lighting is different from other light sources, such as incandescent and CFL in several ways. The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing lighting technologies. Quality LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting. LED is a highly energy efficient lighting technology, and

14

will fundamentally change the future of lighting in the world. Widespread use of LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings in the world. What are the advantages of using LED lights? First and foremost, LED lights are energy efficient. If you compare them to traditional lights, you can have a reduction in energy consumption of between 75 to 90 percent. This is because fluorescent and incandescent lights convert 95 percent of their energy into heat and only 5 percent into light whereas LED lights convert 95 percent of energy into light and only 5 percent into heat! This means that LED’s need less wattage and produce less heat. When your lights give off less heat, you will not need to use your air-conditioning units as much, resulting in an even greater reduction of your energy consumption. Using LED lights, you can save a considerable amount on your electricity bill because they use much less power than traditional lighting. For example, a 5W LED light gives the same level of light as a halogen light of 50W. Furthermore, using LED lights will help the environment by reducing the demand on power plants and decreasing CO2 emissions.

Did you know that LED lights have no toxic elements? Most of us still use fluorescent and halogen lights. These contain toxic chemicals like mercury. When you break these lights, mercury gasses are released and you may inhale their toxic fumes. When you dispose of these lights you also contaminate the environment. LED lights, on the other hand, contain no toxic elements. Changing your lights to LED’s will help protect your home and the environment as well as your own health. By using LED lights, you’ll need fewer lights? LED lights have a better quality and way of distribution the light as they focus the light in one direction. Traditional lights waste energy by emitting light in all directions. They often illuminate areas that require no light at all, such as ceilings. To achieve the same level of brightness you need less LED lights, compared to fluorescent and incandescent lights. Once again this will reduce your electricity consumption and benefit your budget. Why the big price differences in LED lights? Choosing a good quality LED, guarantees you that these LEDs keep their colour over many years and only lose about 10 percent of their strength over their life span. A good quality LED light has a life span of up to 50.000 hours. Which is a lot longer than other types of lighting and means you will not need to replace your lights frequently. This also benefits the environment as fewer light replacements mean fewer resources are needed for manufacturing, packaging and transport. The heat produced is absorbed into a heat sink. A good quality LED therefore has an aluminium body or big aluminium back part on the unit, to redirect the heat of its electronic parts. Today you can get any light in LED, in all possible tonalities. To know which tonality you want look for the lights “kelvin” (k). The lower the kelvin value the warmer the light output. Using specific tonalities you can create the atmosphere you are looking for. Mark works with suppliers from all over the world, such as the Netherlands (Calex), Italy (Flexa), Poland (Niviss), UK (Orluna) and Israel (Bulbing). From a single bulb to a complete lighting project, whether inside or outside, there is always a solution to get the right light for the right space. www.sulsolar.com info@sulsolar.com +351 915 005 511 Partner of the sustainable Superstore

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY LUNCHEON Simply Algarve Editor Denise Grundy joing the Rotary International at the Conrad Algarve for International Womens day.

M

arch 8th was International Women’s Day; in celebration of this world recognised event the International Rotary Club in Almancil hosted a luncheon for the woman of Central Algarve at The Conrad Hotel. As editor of the Simply Algarve Magazine I was delighted to be invited to be their guest speaker. I would therefore like to thank the International Rotary Club of Almancil for their kind invitation and of course the Conrad Hotel for their amazing luncheon and in particular their newly appointed General Manager, Katharina Schlaipfer, who was a fellow guest at the luncheon providing all the ladies with a long-stemmed red rose as a memento of this special day. I had the opportunity to meet many inspiring women, both Rotarians and guests who had wonderful stories to tell, having

worked hard to accomplish their amazing achievements, some of which will feature in our future issues of our magazine. I found it to a wonderful opportunity to give an insight as to how our magazine is researched and put together every month. How Jake, our Art Director and myself work as a team to breathe life into our magazine each month. The written word is a powerful tool and when combined with equally powerful images our senses can be guided in so many directions. It is said that “the pen is mightier than the sword”, and I do believe this to be true. It is equally stated that “one picture is worth one thousand words”. PET HEALTH

Advice on finding your new best friend! Monthly advice from local Vet Dr. Jose Carlos Campos

C

hoosing a pet is no small task. Hundreds of different species and breeds offer many options, but you often only know what each animal needs after you live with it for a while. Nevertheless, there are some things to consider, in order to increase the odds of choosing the right life-companion, whether it is a tarantula, a rabbit or a dog: Ask yourself if this is the right pet for your home and routines. Do you have enough space, and can your home endure the inevitable wear-and-tear? Do you have enough time to provide the necessary care and company? Think about the habits and routines of your family, especially children, and try to imagine how the new pet will fit in. Make sure that you can provide a safe and escape-proof environment for your pet. Pets that are free to roam are exposed to many unnecessary risks like poisoning, animal attacks or being run over. Gather information about your future pet’s activity level, and assess how it matches your daily routines. Very active pets can develop welfare and behavioral problems if they aren’t provided opportunities to exercise. IS IT A DOG? So, you went through the previous steps and decided the right pet for you is a dog. Now you only need to choose your new best friend’s source, breed, age and sex. The first option you need to consider is whether to buy or adopt.

1

2

3 4

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

Fortunately, the number of adopted dogs largely exceeds the number of bought dogs seen at our practice. Nonetheless, being sold doesn’t make a puppy bad, and he will love you just as much. When making this decision, you need to carefully consider the pros and cons of each option. BUYING A DOG The main advantage of buying a purebred dog is predictability. By choosing a certain breed, as well as the sex and age, you can have a fairly good idea of what to expect as your pet grows up. The disadvantages are cost and, in certain breeds, genetically inherited diseases. Finally, some of the most exuberant breeds have anatomical traits like long coats, wrinkled skins, short snouts or droopy eyes, that require expensive veterinary care and frequent husbandry. If you choose this option, we recommend you to gather information on your puppy’s parents and grandparents, especially regarding the existence of inherited diseases most common to that breed. In some breeds, medical exams to screen for these diseases are required in order to allow breeding. ADOPTING A DOG Adopting a dog will give you the satisfaction of knowing you helped an animal in need, and most often your pet will pay you back tenfold with tail wags and play-fights for the rest of his life. In the past, adopting a dog carried some unpredictability in terms of temperament, parasites and infectious disease. Fortunately, nowadays most

charities and shelters train and sterilize their doggies and test/treat them for diseases and parasites before putting them up for adoption, making adoption a safe, socially responsible and costefficient option. If you think about it, adopting a calm grown-up dog may be a smart option for older people, or those who have a busy routine and wish to bypass the energy and destructiveness of a growing pup. If your having trouble finding a shelter that offers dogs for adoption, your vet can surely help you get in touch with the right people. VETERINARY CARE, WHAT TO EXPECT New pets need to start there health care routines to keep them (and their families) safe. Health care for your new dog in the Algarve will be individually tailored by your vet, and in the first year will usually include: - New pup first consult / adopted first consult - Vaccinations, microchip and worming - Tick, flea, mosquito and sand-fly prevention Leishmaniosis and heartworm prevention - sterilization (for non-breeding pets) After the first year things will settle down and, if all is well, you can expect to see your vet 1 to 3 times per year. Don’t miss our next article where we will share some tips for people who didn’t choose man’s best friend! If you would like to contact Dr. Jose Carlos Campos then call 289 422 286.

CURRENCY SWINGS F oreign exchange rates can be volatile and unpredictable. A strong Euro can be a headache for buyers but to vendors who are returning to their country of origin and need to exchange the proceeds from the sale to purchase a house back home it is a benefit. This has been particularly true for a person from the U.K. Sterling has weakened ever since Brexit was voted for. The UK prime minister Theresa May has announced that on the 29th of March of 2017 she will launch the formal negotiations for the UK´s exit as an EU member. One can expect Sterling to be volatile during the two year divorce period as tension during the negotiations will be reflected

in the exchange rate. The weakness in Sterling and uncertainty about Brexit lead some UK buyers to postpone their purchase. To put your dream of owning a property in the Algarve on hold just because of the exchange rate may proof to be a costly decision. Property prices have been rising over the past two years and are expecting to go up by 5 percent this year. What you may gain from an appreciating currency you may loose on property price appreciation. The one thing that is lost forever is time. There are other ways of making your dream come true. Here is one that could work for you if you consider renting out your property for part of

the year. By taking a Euro mortgage to part finance your purchase you do not need to speculate on the direction of the exchange rate. The rental income should cover your monthly mortgage repayments including interest. In other words, you match your liability (mortgage) with your income from the property. As both mortgage repayment and income are in Euros there is no currency risk. If you keep the borrowed amount below 50 percent of the purchase price of the property, banks will give you a better mortgage rate. Interest rates are still at historic lows and it is possible to obtain a 5 year fixed mortgage rate at 1.52 percent subject to status. Banks offer this rate to their best clients but it needs to be mentioned that a more realistic rate is around 1.75 percent. Another benefit of this strategy is that if Sterling strengthens over time, you can consider paying of your mortgage at once. Banks apply an early redemption charge which is 2 percent over the value in case of a fixed rate mortgage and 0.5 percent over a floating rate mortgage. After the 5 year fixed rate period, you can have a floating rate (with a lower early redemption charge). To put the exchange rate of Sterling in perspective you can look up the 10 year chart. In 2008 Sterling was trading versus the Euro almost at parity (0.9784 / 1.022). In April 2015 the cross rate was 0.72 / 1.38, an increase of 34 percent. At the time of writing the cross rate is 0.8653 / 1.156. A strong or weak currency can be both a blessing and a curse; it just depends on your circumstance. As a British vendor/buyer sooner or later you need to take the prevailing FX rate into consideration when accepting

your requirements. If the proceeds are not needed for reinvestment, there is another option if you do not like the current exchange rate. Simply keep the Euros in your bank account either in Portugal or back home (just ask your bank to open a Euro account for you). Currency markets can be volatile. Once you have reached agreement about the transaction price, signed the promissory contract and have received the down payment it is important to secure the exchange rate. Not securing your exchange rate leaves you open to speculation, which is nice if a currency moves in your favour but when it moves in the other direction it is usually a disaster. FOOD

Naturally Delicious and Easy to Prepare By Marco Aleixo

S

Food made simple

alt cod has a unique status in Portuguese cuisine, as it is both a very common food, and a symbol of the Portuguese national identity. This essay proceeds to a genealogical reconstruction of the various reasons and processes that led to this situation, trying to show that dynamics of religious, economic, political and ideological nature combine with a long socialization and incorporation, which translated into a specific taste for this type of food among the Portuguese. Salted and dry cod is very important in current food in Portugal, as the Portuguese are the world’s first consumer. Before World War II, the average annual consumption was 7 kg per capita; In fact, cod is even the most consumed fish in Portugal! It is common to say that there are 1001 ways to cook cod, Well, one study, which covered 4,000 portuguese families, showed other things. For example, what cod recipes are preferred by the Portuguese. Want to try and guess? The test proved that the most popular recipe (23.4 percent), from the existing 1,000 (or close, according to current voice), goes to Bacalhau à Brás, the variant with potato chips and egg. As for the history of “Bacalhau à Braz”, it is said that Braz was the name of a tavern keeper from Bairro Alto (Lisbon) who had the brilliant idea of mixing shredded cod with chips and scrambled eggs. More than soups and grilled fish - also passionate at the table -, Cristiano Ronaldo is an unconditional fan of one of the most famous dishes of Portuguese gastronomy, Bacalhau à Brás. In this recipe I created a variant with fried ham and a cold salad of purple cabbage with cinnamon, honey, raisins and balsamic vinegar. In addition, the cod is also accompanied by a fresh salad of lettuce and tomato. I also used potato straw package to be more practical to your cooking. I recommend for the Portuguese cod wines, whites of the Alvarinho grape.

38

Ingredients:

• 500 grs soaked cod fish (can be frozen, in which case thaw the fish) • 200 g of French fried Straw Snack Day chips batata palha • 1 onion • 3 cloves garlic • 1 Tablespoon of olive oil • 5 eggs • 1 Tablespoon of cream to be add body to the eggs • Salt to taste • Pepper to taste • Nutmeg a pinch • 1 full hand of fresh parsley • 2 smoked ham slices • Black Olives

Preparation: Approx. 30 minutes • Boil the pre-soaked codfish. Peel the onion and garlic cloves. • Cut the onion into thin half moons and chop the garlic cloves. • Heat the olive oil in a saute or frying pan, add the chopped garlic cloves and let warm . • Add the onion and cook until tender and light brown in colour. • Add the cod, mix and cook for five minutes. • Add the french fries and combine. • Add a pinch of nutmeg. • In a saute or frying pan fry the smoked ham and reserve. • Beat the eggs with the cream and add a pinch of salt and pepper, add them to the cod mixture and stir until the eggs are cooked. Remove and serve sprinkled with chopped parsley and black olives. • Plate with the smoked ham on the top. • Serve with a fresh lettuce and tomato salad and also with a red cabbage, raisins, cinnamon, honey and balsamic vinegar cold salad. The cabbage dish is optional but it helps to cut the salty taste of the cod and smoked ham.

Politics to drive the currency markets ‘Brexit is for sure the biggest challenge facing the UK in a long time’

I

Keep up to date with our currency expert Chantelle, Client Account Executive.

t’s been over nine months since the UK referendum on Europe took place, and Brexit is about to get real, so markets are trying to figure out what this means for the UK. Theresa May is entering divorce proceedings with the EU in a position of strength that was unimaginable in the chaotic aftermath of the referendum, but there has been no constitutional crisis and the economy has been resilient (buoyant growth, falling unemployment…). As the first quarter of 2017 comes to an end, the recent slight deterioration in data (inflation, Sterling devaluation…) and the prospect of slower growth post Brexit might really mean that uncertainty is starting to have a real impact. There are no more talks of a hard or soft Brexit in the news but businesses are starting to adjust to the prospect of new barriers to trade with the EU. Concerns are adding up as the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has now confirmed she will be calling for a new Scottish independence referendum and potential hard borders with Northern Ireland, the only part of the UK sharing a border with the

UE, could be economically damaging and destabilize the region. Brexit is for sure the biggest challenge facing the UK in a long time. Mrs May will have to raise to the challenge and show that she has the political clout to strike the deal the UK needs in a post Brexit world or if she is really willing to take the risk of putting the national interest at risk by failing to prepare for the real possibility that the two years of Brexit negotiation might seriously end with no deal in place. With the recent announcement of the triggering of Article 50 set for the 29th of March the expectation is of greater volatility in the currency markets. This means more than ever that there is a real need for a specialist FX company, such as award winning Currencies Direct, to guide clients through the turbulent times ahead. IRS Tax Return 2016: frequently asked questions Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters. It’s important to be aware that the fines for noncompliance with the dates, can be very high. Fines can go from 37.50€ to 112,50€ for a delay of 30 days.

42

T

he IRS delivery time began on the 1st of April and will run until the end of May. So now it’s that time of the year, when we need to clarify some of the questions you may have concerning this important task. In which form can I submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? The submission of the IRS for 2016 can be done in paper at the local tax office, through post, or via the tax portal. However the most advisable way is to give this job to your accountant or tax adviser. He will make simulations before filling the forms, analyze and compare your tax return, before submitting it, making sure you are paying the legal minimum. When do I need to submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? This year all IRS tax returns independently of the type of income earned and way of delivery, need to be submitted from the 1st of April until the 31st of May. Who needs to fill an IRS tax return in Portugal? Only those that have earned salaries or pensions, from Portuguese source lower than 8.500€ per year, and when there wasn’t any tax deducted on source, may be exempt and or in case the alimony income was less than 4.104€. Please note that this only applies for individual declarations, if the option is for a joint tax return there are no exceptions. Do I fill a joint return with my partner or a single one each? You may choose to do it either way, so it’s important to ask your accountant to simulate the two scenarios and see what is more advantageous to you. What happens if I forget to file a return or do it incorrectly? It’s important to be aware that the fines for noncompliance with the dates, can be very high. Fines can go from 37.50€ to 112,50€ for a delay of 30 days. However depending on the type of miss conduct, mainly fraud, fines go from 375€ to 22.500€. I’m non-resident, do I need to submit a return? First of all, are you sure that you are nonresident? Do you have a fiscal representative? If not, where do you receive your IMI council tax bills? If you receive them at your property in Portugal, then most likely you are resident for tax purposes in Portugal. If you are non-resident, then you will only submit a IRS return in Portugal, if you have income from Portuguese source. When do I need to pay my IRS? After you submit your tax return the tax authorities will validate your declaration and you will receive a tax bill in the post, giving you 30

days to pay. Please note that if you intend to be away during the warmer months and don’t have a fiscal representative to receive your bills, you will incur monthly interest charges and penalties, if paying out of date. SOME SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE YOUR IRS THIS YEAR A STRESS-FREE TASK We strongly advise our customers to prepare everything with time, in order to complete this process smoothly: PASSWORD: Make sure you and your partner have a password to access the Tax Portal. If you do not have one, request a new one immediately; COPY OF ID AND NIF: For you, your partner and any dependents you may have; DECLARATIONS OF INCOME: Gather the statements of income and withholding taxes; BANK ACCOUNT: Your IBAN will be necessary to include on your IRS return and will make any tax refund much quicker. CGT: If you have sold a property in 2016, make copies of the deeds (for purchase and for sale) and gather invoices for the real estate commission and home improvements. These can be deducted against any capital gain tax. Remember if you have a resident status but your income was earned abroad, you have to deliver along with the tax return the ‘J’ Annex which discriminates the values received abroad. There are taxation agreements in place between Portugal and several countries to avoid double taxation, so the impact this will have on your IRS will depend on several factors. If you are registered as a non-habitual resident, don’t forget you will need to fill in the Annex L and also include the IBAN information on all your bank accounts abroad. And remember, we can assist you with all this bureaucracy, please feel free to book an appointment with us and avoid any late submission fines.

Plant Grafting

Grafting... Not just hard work but the term used to describe joining plants together thus creating a new variety.

G

rafting describes any of a number of techniques in which a section of a stem with leaf buds is inserted into the stock of a tree. The upper part of the graft (the scion) becomes the top of the plant, the lower portion (the understock) becomes the root system or part of the trunk. Although grafting usually refers to joining not only two plants, it may be a combination of several. A third plant added between two others becomes the trunk or a portion of it. This is called an interstem. Why Graft? Some cultivars (varieties) of plants do not come true from seeds. The seed from a Golden Delicious apple will produce an apple tree, but it will not produce a Golden Delicious apple tree. In other words, fruit trees cannot be reproduced “true to the original cultivar from seed. They can only be reproduced by grafting. Grafting (top working), is a way to change a large tree from old to a new variety. It is also a method of using a root system better adapted to soil or climate than that produced naturally by an ungrafted plant. By using special

44

understocks or interstems, grafting is a way to produce dwarf plants. What can be Grafted? Most varieties of a particular fruit species are interchangeable and can be grafted. Because of differences in vigor, some are better able to support others as understocks. Plants of the same genus and species can usually be grafted even though they are a different variety. Plants with the same genus but of a different species may often be grafted. But the result may be weak, short-lived, or they may not unite at all. Plants of different genera are less successfully grafted although there are some cases where this is possible. Plants of different families cannot be grafted successfully. What Trees Can Be Grafted? Young, vigorous fruit trees up to 5 years old are best for top working. Older apple and pear trees of almost any age can be top worked but the operation is more severe and those over 10 years old must be worked at a higher point. Young trees should have 1 to 2 feet of branch between the trunk and the

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

GARDENS

graft. Otherwise the good crotch formation of the understock will be lost by the trunk expanding past the union. Trees up to 5 years old can be grafted at one time. On older trees about half--the upper and center part only--should be worked at one time. The remainder should be worked a year later. How to Collect and Store Scions Scion wood may be collected during the winter. It should have a diameter of 6mm to 10mm. If the scions are left on the tree until spring, there is some danger that the buds will start to grow or be injured during winter. Store in a cold, moist place at temperatures close to 34 degrees F. At home, a few scions could be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator with moist paper towels. Do not store in a freezer. When to Graft It is best to graft in the spring, from the time the buds of understock trees are beginning to open, until blossom time. The usual time is April or early May. What is budding? Budding is a method of grafting in which the scion (upper

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

portion of the graft) is a single bud rather than a piece of stem or twig. It is the most commonly used method for fruit tree production in the nursery, but can also be used for top working plum, cherry, apricots, and peach as well as young apple and pear trees. (Cherry, plum, and apricot are not easily cleft grafted or whip grafted.) Why propagate by budding? Budding, particularly “T” budding, is faster than any other grafting technique. Even for the beginner, the percentage of successful unions is usually greater than with other forms of grafting. Budding is also well adapted to plant shoots from 6mm to 25mm in diameter. In larger branches, buds may be inserted in vigorously growing twigs near the upper part of the plant. Besides ease and success, a stronger union is formed than those made with other grafting techniques. Because only a single bud is inserted, you can produce a number of new plants even when scion wood of a new variety is scarce. When is the time to bud? “T” budding can be done almost any time that the bark of

45

GARDENS

the stock slips (easily separates from the wood) and buds are fully developed. Most budding is done from July 15 to August 15. Buds set at this time normally remain dormant until the following spring. In cold climates, bud growth in fall is undesirable because young shoots are subject to winter injury. Spring budding (in May) is possible, but is less desirable than fall budding. What Tools and Materials are Needed? Knife. A good quality knife, able to hold a sharp edge, is the key to good grafting. Although special grafting and budding knives are desirable, you can use almost any good pocket knife. Keep material to sharpen the knife handy. Grafting tape. This is a special tape with a cloth backing that decomposes before girdling can occur. Tapes may be used for binding grafts where there is not enough natural pressure. Rubber Electrician’s tape is an excellent material that will bind and protect graft unions. Plastic electrical and masking tapes are also used. Plastic tape can be a problem because it lasts to long and may constrict the growth of the graft. If used, choose a brand that is elastic and will stick well to itself. Do not stretch this tape too tightly

or it may crack or weather. Masking tape is suitable where little pressure is required, as in the whip graft. Asphalt water emulsion. Is widely used as a protective coating on graft unions. It is of pasty consistency and can be applied with a brush. It is preferable, however, to smear it on thicker with a small paddle. Budding strips. Budding strips are elastic bands. They look like a wide rubber band that has been cut open. Grafting tool. Specially designed tools have been developed for grafting. The most common one is used for cleft grafting. It has a blade used to split the stub and a wedge to hold the split open while the scions are inserted If this tool is unavailable, use a heavy knife and a fairly wide wedge at least 2 inches long for cleft grafting. Use a mallet or hammer to pound the grafting tool or heavy knife into the stub. Split the stub and insert the wedge to open the split. REASONS FOR GRAFT FAILURE 1 Stock and scion were not compatible. 2 The cambiums were not meeting properly. 3 Scions were upside down. 4 Grafting was done at the wrong time. 5 Understock or scion were not healthy. 6 Scions were dried out or injured by cold. 7 Scions were not dormant. 8 The graft was not properly covered. 9 The scion was displaced by storm, birds, or other means. 10 The graft was shaded too much by other growth. 11 The graft was attacked by insects or disease. 12 The graft union was girdled because tape was not cut or released in time In next months issue we will be looking more closely at these methods and giving detailed instructions for you to carry out your own grafts. The amazing Space Grill. How Ryan Martin designed “the best BBQ in the world”.

H

ow many times have you got to the end of a summer with a dirty, grease covered BBQ grill that you don’t even want to touch? The answer is probably too many! ‘Space grill’ founder Ryan Martin was tired of that exact problem and decided to change the BBQ world forever. He set about designing the most practical BBQ ever invented to suit every type of living areas from small rental apartments to Luxury homes. His first step was to make the unit visually appealing and “out-of-sight” when it wasn’t in use, easy right?… Maybe not. Making the BBQ fold down without leaving a greasy mess of last Sundays left over juice all over the floor was not an easy task but this is probably the most unique part of Space Grill, the auto-swing drip tray moves intuitively with the BBQ, so that as you fold it down the drip tray catches any mess! Design dilemma number two was making the unit not just

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

easy to use but something you enjoy using. The first thing people do when using their BBQ is decide which part of the grill plate they are going to use, then continue by lighting the ignition and turning on all the burners until they know which element they are going to use. Realising the potential waste and hazards this could cause, Ryan added individual ignitions to each of the burners on the Space Grill meaning you only have to light the element you intend on using. Ryan grew up forever moving from apartment to apartment from which he took the inspiration to make the space grill fit everywhere from the biggest roof terraces to the smallest of balconies, all whilst keeping the great looks and high quality materials you expect from big BBQs. and giving you “the best BBQ in the world”. GOLF

Controlling the ball flight and distances This months tip from Stuart Martin, Golf Operations Manager and Head PGA Professional, Monte Rei

M

any golfers only think about hitting a full shot with every club rather than thinking about the conditions they are surrounded by. These simple drills can help you achieve different ball flight trajectories along with better control of the golf ball dispersion. As well as analyzing the trajectories and distances it is also very important to analyze how the ball reacts when it lands on the green. Does it have a full run and release? Does it grab then release? Or does it grab and spin? This analyzation will give you key information into how you approach different shots in different on-course situations. You can achieve distance control by varying the length of the

48

follow-through. Start by practicing hitting seven-iron shots with three followthroughs: 1) halfway (shaft parallel to ground) 2) two thirds (shaft points up) 3) and full finish. The goal is to learn your distances and trajectories with the different swings. Do this with all clubs from 5 iron to lob wedge and document the distances, trajectories and ball reaction on landing. Monte Rei are proud to be the first stockists and fitters of PXG golf clubs in Portugal, look out for a full report next month.

EUSÉBIO AND THE CURSE OF BÉLA GUTTMANN

T

Brought to you by Chris Wright.

here are thousand of Benfica supporters in the Algarve as the eleven Casa do Benfica Cafés, stretching from VRSA in the west to Lagos in the east, will testify. And it was in Lagos, nearly 60 years ago, that Benfica hid a shy 18 year-old young footballer for fear that he would be kidnapped by archrivals Sporting Lisbon. As a youngster Eusébio da Silva Ferreira played for Sporting Lourenço Marques, a subsidiary of Sporting Lisbon, in his home country of Mozambique which was then a colonial possession of Portugal. Benfica discovered Eusébio due to the efforts of Brazilian former player José Carlos Bauer, who recommended him to Benfica manager Béla Guttmann. The move was controversial as the two big Lisbon archrivals disputed the legality of the transfer. According to Eusébio: "Benfica wanted to pay me to sign for them while Sporting wanted me as a junior player for experience with no monetary reward. Benfica spoke to my mum and brother, and offered €1,000 for three years. My brother asked for double and they paid

it.” On the 17th December 1960, Eusébio arrived in Lisbon and was sent to Lagos as Benfica fearing he would be spirited away by Sporting. During his twelve days in a Lagos hotel, away from the furore going on in the capital, he went under the pseudonym of Ruth Malosso. The ‘onoff’ transfer was resolved and Eusébio made his official debut for the Eagles on the 1st June 1961, against V.Setúbal, in the third round of the Portugal Cup. The game was controversially scheduled for the day after Benfica’s European Cup final victory against Barcelona in Berne, Switzerland and the Portuguese Football Federation refused to postpone it, so the club played their reserve team. Eusébio scored a goal and missed a penalty; the first of only five he missed throughout his career. Two weeks later, Benfica played the final of an invitational Tournoi de Paris against Pelé's Santos. At the start of the second-half, with Benfica losing 4-0, Béla Guttmann decided to introduce the unknown Eusébio who proceeded to scored a spectacular hat-trick inside seventeen minutes, resulting in his photo appearing next day on the cover of

the famed French sporting newspaper, L'Équipe. When Béla Guttmann had taken over at Benfica he had sacked twenty of the senior players and promoted youth team players including young Eusébio. In 1961 and 1962 Bela Guttman’s Benfica won the European Cup firstly beating Barcelona 3-2 and then the all conquering Real Madrid 5-3 including the illustrious Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano. Guttmann asked for a pay rise but his request was rejected by the Benfica directors and he stormed out of the club. He left them with a parting shot, “Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever win another European Cup” and since 1962 Benfica have been in seven European finals 1963, 1965, 1968, 1983, 1988, 1990, 2013.…….and lost them all! For Benfica fans the curse is very real, every time the team plays close to Guttmann’s grave in Vienna they take flowers and ask for the curse to be lifted. Before the European Cup final against Milan in Vienna in 1990 Eusébio himself went and prayed to Béla Guttmann but Benfica still lost 1-0.
