WELCOME

Welcome...

...to your August issue. This month we take you to our favourite Gelato parlour in Vilamoura; Amorino, where they serve not only the tastiest ‘gelato’, but it has to be the best looking too! Being in the height of summer, a visit to Lewis Andrews is a must to check out the latest in swimwear with their 2017 collection. Last month the Simply Algarve team were generously invited aboard the luxury Yacht ‘So Para ti’ Just Charters. We were taken to along the beautiful Algarve coastline to Olhos de Agua where we chatted to the crew about their home town. A wonderful morning not to be forgotten which was followed by a mini cruise around Vilamoura marina in the new luxurious water taxi. Finally we visited the Aquashow water park where we spoke to sales manager Juri who told us about the history of the park and also the very exciting future. All this along with up to the minute Finance, Currency, Property and Sports news, plus gardening and of course ‘Food made Simple’ by Chef Marco Aleixo. We hope you enjoy this issue, and as ever are keen to hear your comments and suggestions. Simply email design@simplyalgarvemag.com Richard Bassett, Publisher

LOULÉ’S FAMOUS CALCINHA CAFÉ HAS REOPENED

afé Calcinha, near the market in Loulé, reopened on Friday, June 14th having undergone extensive renovation work. Calcinha opened in 1929 and soon became a Loulé favourite, made famous by the poet António Aleixo where he composed and recited much of his work. The building was purchased by the Municipality of Loulé for €180,000, in a process that began in 2012 when the site was declared a “Property of Municipal Interest.” Much of this ‘interest’ was from the current

mayor, Vitor Aleixo who is the poet’s grandson. The €120,000 refurbishment cost struck many as an expensive vanity project as private, rather than ratepayers’ money could have been used. Café Calcinha has been a much-loved cultural landmark for locals and visitors and had remained largely untouched over the decades. It also was largely unmaintained and the council’s expenditure has given the building a new life and new facilities, while sensibly using the original tables and chairs. Tiago Soares, Bruno Inácio and João

Apolónia are now managing the business, “We want the Calcinha to be a privileged space. A meeting point. During the year we are going to host cultural events.” Bruno Inácio is a former president of the Parish of Querença, João Apolónia was the manager of a bar in Loulé, and Tiago Soares has owned shops in Quarteira and Vilamoura. The menu is much improved with meals as well as snacks, pastries and craft beers all being added until September when the full range will be available.

PORTUGAL SIGNS SHIPPING DEAL WITH MOZAMBIQUE

n a bid to boost investment and strengthen bilateral relations, Portugal and Mozambique have signed a memorandum of understanding on maritime and port transport. Portugal’s Minster of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, joined the Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Mozambique, Carlos Fortes Mesquita, in a signing ceremony in Oporto at which she said training will be increased and technology will be shared, such as the coastal maritime traffic system used by Portugal. Minister Mesquita said that Mozambique “has an extremely strategic geographical position” in transport and logistics, particularly with its links to Zimbabwe, Malawi and the Republic of Zambia, Republic of Congo and South Africa’s northeast. Mesquita said that Mozambique is developing both socially and economically and needs to link with other countries, especially as its oil and gas projects will lead to Mozambique becoming one of the major exporters of gas, diesel and fertilizers. Both ministers said that existing bilateral relations are improved by shared traditions and Portugal and Mozambique’s “shared history” – referring to the arrival of Portuguese traders in the late C15th, centuries of colonisation and independence in 1975. The meeting in the port of Leixões included a visit to the Ship Coordination Centre, port terminals and logistics platform, and the new Cruise Terminal, inaugurated in July 2015.

couple of years ago my better half, a few friends and I wanted to do something different. We wanted to be adventurous, do something that none of us had done before and create another lifetime memory. We read about this experience where you can cross a countries’ border by Zip-line. Once we found out it was in Alcoutim, only one hour drive away from central Algarve, the decision was made. We all packed a picnic bag, jumped in the car and headed towards the motorway. As soon as you start driving into the small, picturesque village of Alcoutim, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking as you are driving parallel the Guadiana river (which is a large area between the Portuguese/Spanish boarder, fact of the day). You can also take a short boat ride over the river to go onto the Spanish side, Sanlúcar de Guadiana for those of you who would love to enjoy the scenery a little more. Once you arrive at the destination, you are greated by a a very friendly team who explain the entire security measures taken, harness you with all the necessary

ENERGY

TESLA: changing the world again!

Sustainable superstore explain the new advancements from Tesla, giving your home a whole new world of power and efficiency.

A

fter the latest development of TESLA’s POWERWALL battery there now is a new kid on the block! Meet TESLA Powerwall 2, a brilliant battery device with more then double the capacity of its predecessor and with its own built in inverter it makes everything look even better. Kenneth Grondijs of SHS Solar Solutions is the exclusive authorized reseller of TESLA Powerwall for Algarve and is very proud to announce the very first 3 units in Europe were sold and installed here in Algarve! Portugal is still in the race with Spain and other European countries to get Mr. Elon Musk to build his Giga-factory in our back garden. Since this plant, like the Nevada Giga Factory, will run completely on its own produced solar energy, the Algarve would be the perfect place for it with 300 days of sunshine. So who is this genius? Elon Musk once sold his own brain child ‘Paypal’ for several billion dollars. Although many of us might then want to enjoy the pool and beach, Mr. Musk meanwhile couldn’t sit still and founded the world famous electric car TESLA Motors, also has a Space company ‘SpaceX’ and owns his own Solar company SolarCity. He even managed to let his space rocket land back on earth in 1 piece and if that was not enough, he did it again on a platform in the middle of the ocean! TESLA POWERWALL 2

14

The State-of-the-art Lithium-Ion battery offers not only 10 years of warranty but also unlimited charging cycles. In the Algarve this could easily mean 13-14 years or more! No other Lithion manufacturer can give the same price nor this great warranty. Average DOD (Dept of Discharge) of Lead Acid or Lead Crystal batteries are around 55 percent, where the Lithium batteries have a DOD of 80 percent or more! The TESLA Powerwall 2 can be wall or floor mounted and with its built in inverter it looks fantastic to offer 13,5Kw storage and is expandable up to 9 units, this will get you free power throughout the night. TESLA ROOF AND WALL SOLAR TILES SolarCity will start producing Roof and Wall Solar Tiles. This offers clients the ability to integrate Photo Voltaic on their (new to build) roofs, or at a façade/wall. This does not only look fantastic, it also lets your home constantly produce power. There will be 4 models available: - conventional tile and 3 types of shingles. Kenneth Grondijs is founder and partner of the Sustainable Superstore in Almancil, owner of SHS Solar Solutions and exclusive authorized reseller of TESLA Powerwall for the Algarve. He has been involved in sustainable energy since 2009 in the Algarve, offering advice on various energy saving concepts. Tel: 932 650 496 Email info@shs-tesla.com Web: www.shs-tesla.com

ith the heat of summer at its peak you can not avoid ice cream, whether its a Sorbet or Sundae they are definitely needed to keep cool. It was on our very own search for ice cream around the Vilamoura Marina that we came across Amorino with their very special and eye catching Amorino Roses. G

elato, from the Italian word gelato meaning “frozen is Italian ice cream. Gelato is made with a base of milk, cream, and sugar, and flavored with fruit and nut purees and other flavourings. It is generally lower in fat, but higher in sugar than other styles of ice cream. Gelato typically contains less air and more flavoring than other kinds of frozen desserts, giving it a density and richness that distinguishes it from other ice creams.

What dreams are made of!

T

An update from property expert Robert Bjiker, Yellow Homes

he Algarve is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Every year in summer the beaches are packed with a peak in August, but walk a few miles in both direction and you almost have the beach to yourself. This year the total visitors to the Algarve is expected to exceed the all time high of 2016, due to the continuous popularity of the destination as well as the influx of

hundred of thousands ´new comers´ from other holiday destinations in countries that are currently facing turmoil. It is no surprise then that holidaymakers leave wishing to return, some on a permanent basis. Property prices are rising and are well off the lows recorded during the crisis. During this period the price correction from peak (2008) to trough was 40 percent. Attractive property prices combined with tax incentives in addition to endless

sunshine, beautiful blue flag beaches, good food and the friendly Portuguese people make for a magical potion which makes people wanting to come back for more. This is also notable in the rental market. The traditional summer season has expanded from the normal July/August period to now include the months of May/June and September/ October. Moreover, demand for long stays during the winter months also saw a dramatic increase over the past three years which makes the Algarve a lively place all year round; much to the benefit for local businesses, some who are still recovering from the crisis. Regardless of currency movements, there continues to be good demand from buyers from the United Kingdom for quality properties and even stronger demand from Scandinavians, French and Italians. Making a permanent move to Portugal has become even more attractive with the successful introduction of programs such as the Golden Visa and the NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) to attract foreign buyers of property. No wonder then that there are many buyers around looking to secure their Algarve dream property! Especially the NHR program is of interest to pensioners and the self employed with a scientific, technical or artistic nature, which basically end up paying zero tax on income changing them from ‘not happy residents’ in their country of origin into very happy Portuguese residents

Depending on the country of origin, tax on pensions can be as high as 60 percent of income. For example, a foreigner with a pension of Euro 3500 per month (after 50 percent tax) all of a sudden ends up receiving Euro 7000 per month once the NHR status in Portugal has been obtained. Once your have obtained the NHR status, the tax holiday is valid for 10 years. The success of the Golden Visa and NHR programs has also not gone unnoticed

by real estate agencies and vendors. The former enjoyed an increase in transaction volume. The latter managed to sell their property, which in many cases had been on the market for several years. Buyers who opt for the NHR program tend to have a preference for properties in the East and West Algarve whereas buyers under the Golden Visa program tend to focus more on the Central Algarve and greater Lisbon area. tax haven is gaining traction, judged by the growing number of buyers from Scandinavia, France and Belgium. More and more people seem to think Portugal is a fiscal paradise. In addition, recent law changes for Local Lodging include a lower tax rate of 8.75 percent of rental income over 2017, which makes a buy to let property all the more attractive as it offers the best of both worlds, namely your own home away from home and rental income. If you consider purchasing a property in the Algarve, timing may be of the essence. There are still attractively priced good quality properties on the market and the Euro is relatively weak versus other currencies. Aquashow past, present

& the future Learn about the history of Aquashow and hear about some exciting plans for the future!

A

s I’m sure you all know and are experiencing it at the moment, the Summers in the Algarve are intensely hot and whether you are a resident or tourist a stop at Aquashow is a must, so we decided to bring you the story behind the family

fun park. We met Juri Tietzen, Aquashow’s sales manager who has been a part of the team from the start who told us the story of how Celestino Santos acquired and built the establishment up to the what it is now. Mr Celestino is originally from Coimbra (Between Lisbon and Porto), however, his first route of business was in France where he was involved in the construction on apartments, after some time he decided to return to Coimbra where he continued with some other projects. In the 80’s Celestino relocated to the Algarve withe the intent of constructing Villas and Apartments in the Vilamoura/Quarteira area and eventually progressed to managing peoples Villas as well. Being the eagle-eyed businessman he was, Celestino

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

was always looking for new projects and subsequently came across a public auction for various plots or land and Aquashow. Initially he was only interested in the plots which were located around the pre-existing park (Which are now occupied by the Aquashow hotel and the new rides and slides.) but before going ahead with the apartments he planned on constructing, he decided to take a look at the waterpark which he had acquired. The Park was in a terrible condition and had deteriorated after being repossessed by the bank, as the previous owner had gone bankrupt. At this point the park consisted of the wave pool, a few simple slides an adult pool and a kids pool. After considering his options, Mr. Celestino decided he would invest some money into the park. He bought the park in 1999 and decided to keep it closed through the year 2000 to smarten the park up a bit and build a new slide, the now well known speed foams slide (a 5 laned wavey slide). With the renovations done and the new

39

PLACES

attraction, he opened the park on the 15th of June 2001 with a 3 month provisional license and experienced huge success throughout that Summer. Every year after that a new attraction was added. In 2002 the Parrot show, 2003 the white fall slide (the big V), 2004 the snake slide, etc‌ 2005 was a very important year for Aquashow as it brought the first and only water coaster in Portugal and of course was very successful. More recently we saw the arrival of the tallest waterslides in Europe, standing at a staggering 32 metres giving the biggest adrenaline rush available from any freefall slide and this year we have the new River slide, designed for the whole group to ride and enjoy together. The future of the waterpark is very exciting with plans in motion to have a whole new indoor waterpark section with a slide that even exits the park and hovers over the car park! In all, the waterpark is a great place to enjoy a day in the sun whether it’s you and your family or friends or even just a relaxing day all to yourself! FOOD

Naturally Delicious and Easy to Prepare By Marco Aleixo

T

he gastronomic uses and habits of a region are strongly connected with its geographical localization, weather, culture and unavoidably, its history. On a journey along the coast, every restaurant offers you a wide range of fresh fish and shellfish; some of the most common are sardines, sea bass, tuna, hake, clams, cockles, spiny lobsters, dogfish, monkfish, horse mackerel etc… Traditional regional dishes include charcoal grilled sardines, several types of fish stewed with layers and potatoes, onions, tomatoes and peppers, Cataplanas (clams, spiced sausage, tomatoes cooked in a sealed, clam shaped, cooper pan), tuna steaks, cuttlefish dish, octopus salad. I am going to put my own twist on some sea bass to make a simple and easy dish you can make that would suit any tipical restaurant here in the Algarve.

Food made simple Ingredients (Serves 1) • One and a half onions • Two table spoons of Olive oil • 200 - 220g of boneless Sea Bass fillets • Zest and juice from an Orange • One tea spoon of Tarragon • Boiled or fresh vegetables • Five table spoons of cream • Roasted almonds for plating

Preparation Fish: Put one tablespoon of olive oil in a sauté pan and when the olive oil is hot sauté the fish with the skin down first for about 45 seconds, then turn the fish and cook for 20 seconds more. Add some boiled vegetables or plate with a fresh salad and serve with the citrus sauce. Citrus cream sauce: Cut the onions into half moons and fry in 1 table spoon of olive oil, when the onions start to get light brown add the orange juice and the cream with the tarragon and the orange zest then stir.

Politics to drive the currency markets Keep up to date with our currency expert Chantelle, Client Account Executive.

‘Over the last few weeks the Bank of England (BoE) has taken the spotlight.’

P

olitical uncertainty was the main driver of currency movement in June, but over the last few weeks the Bank of England (BoE) has taken the spotlight. Conflicting commentary from various BoE officials has alternately raised and lowered Bo interest rate hike expectations, inspiring pound movement in the process. Mixed UK data didn’t exactly help the pound either, with a surprising drop in the UK unemployment rate to a 42-year low of 4.5 percent being countered by the news that average earnings are still running well below the current rate of inflation. The euro has also been fluctuating in the face of central bank uncertainty, but to a much lesser extent than the pound, and the common currency has been deriving support from a recent bout of weakness in the US dollar. For the pound to climb against the euro, the vote on whether borrowing costs should be increased needs to be split and

the minutes need to indicate that the central bank is moving closer to tightening stimulus. If hopes for a near-term rate hike are dashed we can expect Sterling to tumble. That being said, the EUR/GBP gains may be limited if the European Central Bank (ECB) equally hints that it’s willing to leave policy where it is for the foreseeable future. With Brexit negotiations now well underway, any developments in the discussions are liable to inspire pound volatility. Submitting a claim for errors in your IRS Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters.

If you are going to issue a complaint, do not forget that you must do so within the legal deadlines. In the case of complaints related to the settlement of the IRS, taxpayers may do it within 150 days of notification of the settlement.

46

I

f you have received the settlement of your IRS and detected any errors made by the Tax Authorities on their calculations, find out what your rights are and how to issue a formal complaint. The submission of IRS tax returns, relating to income in 2016 was done in the months of April and May, irrespective of the income category. This was one of the alterations brought to us in 2017, as in previous years the deadlines were dependant on the income category. The tax settlement notes should have been received by all tax payers during the months of June and July, however some of the tax payers have not yet received them, due to a delay in the tax system which happened last year with a small part of the declarations. If you have received the settlement note and realized that there was an error on the calculation of the final accounts, or if the amount is much different to what you have forecasted, you may file a complaint to the Tax Authorities. But beware: before you decide to submit a claim is important to check if you have reason to do it. For instance, when it concerns errors in widthholding taxes, in the case where the entities to whom the taxpayer worked did not declare those amounts. If the taxpayer has proof of the actual values of widthheld taxes that were held last year, he must submit a complaint and attach the documents that prove the merits of that complaint. It’s also important to pay attention to your post box, as in some cases the tax authorities demand that you confirm some of the declared expenses at the tax office or through the portal. This happens mostly in the case of IRS declarations which include the sale of properties or long-term rentals. If for any reason you do not confirm these expenses, they can be erased from your declaration and a new tax bill is sent to your address. Do not forget the legal deadlines If you are going to issue a complaint, do not forget that you must do so within the legal deadlines. In the case of complaints related to the settlement of the IRS, taxpayers may do it within 150 days of notification of the settlement. An important point: the rules indicate that taxpayers may not have both an internal appeal and ask for judicial review on the same fact. “It cannot be made a complaint, when it has been lodged judicial review on the same basis”. This means that first the taxpayers must issue a complaint with the Tax Authorities and wait for the decision. If it is unfavourable to the taxpayer and the taxpayer is still not convinced, then he can advance to the hierarchial appeal and/or request a judicial review.

Tracking your claim? After presenting the administrative claim you can track the status and progress of your complaint at the Tax Portal. The system will tell you the process number, the date and details of the tax in question, the tax office where the complaint has been filed and the process situation on a given date. Here are the various stages through which the internal appeal process can pass, according to the information contained in the Tax Web Portal. Initiation: The process was initiated in the service of finance Instruction: finance services are to instruct the file containing the information required for the decision. Waiting for distribution: The process has not yet been distributed to technical for consideration. Assessment: The process has already been distributed to the technician who is preparing the decision. Referred to the Finance Director: The case was referred to the regional peripheral organ of tax administration, the competent authority for the decision. Preliminary Hearing: The draft decision has been prepared, pending the exercise of the right to a prior hearing of the complainant. Await Decision: The prior hearing has been exercised and the new elements raised at that hearing will be taken into account and the decision to be taken. Termination by Upheld: The process was terminated, and the claim of the complainant deserved appointment. Partial Deferral of Extinction: The process was terminated, and the claim of the complainant deserved partial success. Rejection by Extinction: The process was terminated, since the claim of the complainant deserved appointment. Filing for Extinction: The process was terminated by objection of inadmissibility or because the person concerned, upon written request, abandoned the procedure. Termination for transfer to another service of Finance: The process was terminated because the tax office which was established was not competent for the decision.

The Tom Who would believe that it was the tax man who answered the age old question! Fruit or Vegetable?

A

n interesting aspect of tomato history is the classic debate: Is the Tomato a Fruit or Vegetable? I guess that depends on whom you are asking. By definition, a fruit is the edible plant structure of a mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually eaten raw; some are sweet like apples, but the ones that are not sweet such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. are commonly called vegetables. Botanists claim that a fruit is any fleshy material that covers a seed or seeds where as a horticulturists point of view would pose that the tomato is a vegetable plant. Until the late 1800’s the tomato was classified as a fruit to avoid taxation, but this was changed after a Supreme Court ruling that the tomato is a vegetable and should be taxed accordingly. When it is all said and done, the history of the tomato has classified as a poisonous beautiful plant, a tax-avoiding fruit, and a taxable vegetable. Nonetheless, the tomato is the most popular vegetable in America and enjoyed by millions all over the world. Tomatoes belong to the genus Lycopersicon (Solanaceae family). Evidence supports the theory the first domesticated tomato was a little yellow fruit, ancestor of L. cerasiforme,

48

grown by the Aztecs of Central America who called it ‘xitomatl’ (pronounced zee-toe-má-tel), meaning plump thing with a navel, and later called tomati by other Central American tribes. Aztec writings mention tomatoes were prepared with peppers and salt, likely to be the original salsa recipe. The tomato’s actual origin is thought to be Peru in South America where it grew wild (like a weed) several thousands of years before making its way north to Central America. Presently, eight species still grow wild in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Some believe Spanish explorer Cortez may have been the first to transfer the small yellow tomato to Europe after he captured the Aztec city of Tenochtítlan in 1521, now Mexico City. Yet others believe Christopher Columbus, an Italian working for the Spanish monarchy, discovered the tomato earlier in 1493. The earliest discussion of the tomato in European literature appeared in an herbal written in 1544 by Pietro Andrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist, who named it pomi d’oro, golden apple. However, Mattioli’s review was a bit of bad press for the tomato as he and other distinguished authors continued to review the tomato as unhealthy or inedible because of its link to other members of the Solanaceae, notably deadly nightshade

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

ato story (Atropus belladonna) as it resembled the leaves of the tomato plant. Deadly nightshade, a poisonous plant, was used as a hallucinogenic drug and a beauty aid in parts of Europe. Its name “belladonna” (meaning beautiful woman) referred to ladies in medieval courts who applied drops of nightshade extract to their eyes to dilate the pupils, a look considered fashionable at the time. The hallucinogenic nightshade induced visions and a feeling of flying, forever associating it with witchcraft. Old German folklore reveals witches used nightshade to conjure up werewolves. Interestingly, the German name for tomato translates to wolf peach. And in the 18th century, Carl Linnaeus, noting German legend, named the tomato Lycopersicon esculentum meaning edible wolf peach. Although the tomato circulated widely throughout Europe (as an ornamental plant from the New World), suspicion continued and its use in European cuisine evolved slowly over a period two hundred years. The yellow cerasiforme (original stock) that crossed the Atlantic into Europe with Spanish explorers continued to be hybridized into red and orange cultivars by 1623 and extensive hybridization continued in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. The first cookbook to mention tomatoes was published in Naples Italy in 1692. By 1752

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

English cooks used tomatoes in the flavoring of soups, and in 1758 a tomato recipe appeared in The Art of Cookery by Hannah Glass. Still, the tomato remained under suspicion when it returned to North America with colonists in the mid 1700s. Thomas Jefferson served tomatoes and French fries at his table in the 1780s. In 1820, Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson announced that at noon on September 26, he would eat a bushel of tomatoes in front of the Boston courthouse. Spectators turned out to watch the poor man die, yet they were shocked when he lived. By 1858 a seed merchant named Buist wrote this about the tomato, “There is no vegetable on the catalog that has obtained such popularity in so short a period.“ In 1863, 23 cultivars were listed in the catalog – among them an heirloom tomato named ‘Trophy,’ the first modern-looking, large red, smooth-skinned variety. By 1880 nearly two hundred cultivars had been named, although a study at Michigan Agricultural College in the late 1880s concluded of 171 cultivars only 61 were truly from different lines. Names of heirloom tomatoes have continued to reflect their own history: ‘Polish’ is said to have been smuggled into the US on the back of a postage stamp in the late 1800s; ‘First Pick’

49

was grown by generations of the Baptiste family in Reims, France; ‘Besser’ came from Freiburg Germany; ‘Amish Paste’ has been cultivated in Pennsylvania since 1870; ‘Jeff Davis’ a cultivar from Alabama honored the Confederacy; and ‘Ace’ was introduced by the Campbell Soup Company in 1953, to name only a few. GROWING TOMATOES The basics of growing tomatoes are relatively simple. Tomatoes like warmth, sun, and plenty of water. They can be grown in the ground and take well to containers, so they can be grown just about anywhere. It may look like work, but once you pop the first ripe fruit into your mouth you’ll be hooked. CULTIVATION Most varieties will just sit there well after the last frost if the night temperature is less than 55 degrees. The more sun they get the more robust the plant, the more they’ll flower, and of course those flowers are the source of the fruit. Water well and deeply. Aim for uniformly moist, but not soggy, soil. It makes all the difference in how well your plants will do. The following may help you with your plants: Tomatoes also like raised beds. The warmer soil is conducive to better growth. Unless there is a reason to not use them, they are definitely the way to go. For indeterminant varieties, build a trellis structure or use a tall bamboo teepee to which you can tie the growing vines. Tomato cages may not be big enough. Bushy varieties do fine with tomato cages. Transplant about two weeks after the last frost date if at all possible. The earlier you can get your plants moved into the garden the better, however, cool or damp weather is not the tomato’s friend. Keep soil moist and avoid letting it dry out. Uneven watering can cause a host of problems including blossom end rot.

50

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

If you intend to fertilize, use a 5-10-5 fertilizer and be sparing. Over fertilization is worse than no fertilization at all. Pinch off suckers that form at the joint between the stem and branch. No point in wasting valuable plant energy on pointless growth. SOIL Tomatoes are pretty tough and will grow in just about any type of soil. However, the richer the soil the more likely you will be able to raise beautiful tomatoes organically. Washed dairy compost is nutrient rich and won’t burn young plants. It holds water well too, which is vital for tomato growth and happiness. Mulch to retain moisture with straw. Some folks like to add moisture granules to their soil and pots to retain

moisture...especially when they might miss a day or two of watering. DISEASE AND PREVENTION Some tomato varieties are more susceptible to fungus, bacteria, and nematodes than others. And such vulnerability is usually compounded by your growing zone and soil type. Commercial varieties usually indicate on the tag, with a designation like VFN for example, if they are resistant to such systemic diseases as verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, or nematodes. If your tomato plants get sick and die quickly, the chances are good you have some type of systemic disease. If they lose all their leaves or leaves get curled, yellow, or just drop, it’s more likely to be one of the many foliage

diseases. Only a professional can diagnose the problem for sure. You may be able to diagnose the problem by contacting your county extension service or through a reliable nursery. As with most things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Buy disease-resistant plants if you can. Heirlooms may not indicate any disease resistance, but that most likely means they haven’t been lab tested for pathogens. Check some of the gardening message boards on the Web for tomato gardeners in your region; you may be able to determine which varieties are more resistant to prevalent diseases or problems in your area. Experience is also a good teacher, which is another reason for growing several different types of tomatoes. You can prevent foliage disease by keeping the leaves dry, which means watering at the base of the plants, not overhead. Also, a southeastern exposure is ideal because it is both warm without being hot, and the early morning sun dries dew so leaves don’t remain damp for long. Also, but no less important, don’t water your tomato plants at night unless you are using a drip irrigation system. Space plants so they are well ventilated and not too crowded. -Mark O’Shaughnessy,

WITCHCRAFT AND THE EAGLES

I

t was in Porto that Harry Potter author J K Rowling let her imagination off the leash during two years spent teaching English in the northern city and spending her free time writing early drafts of the seven-volume global blockbuster that made her a literary household name. The owls that delivered letters to Harry Potter in Privet Drive are legendary but now comes something even more bizarre involving Águias (Eagles) and Dragões (Dragons)! Francisco J. Marques, communications director for FC Porto, seems to have stirred up a hornets nest. Firstly he provided emails purporting that Benfica was colluding with ex-referee Adão Mendes and Benfica TV director Pedro Guerra to disclose ‘which referees the club could trust’. That was just the beginning. Francisco J. Marques then allegedly accused The Eagles of using ’witchcraft’ to help them win the Liga, paying out large sums of money to a ‘witch doctor’ from Bissau Guinea to help them come out on top during matches. The witchcraft accusations are just one of a handful of allegations being flung at Benfica by Porto, including the referee collusion and monitoring of UEFA vice-president and ex-FPF president Fernando Gomes’ phone. No word yet as to how Benfica plans to respond to the allegations and there has been no word whether or not the newest revelations will also fall under the ongoing corruption investigations. For those Benfica fans who still believe in the Curse of Béla Guttmann then the latest revelations might be of concern. Interested in learning more about the Curse of Béla Guttmann? Then read: ‘The Greatest Comeback: From Genocide to Football Glory’ - The Story of Béla Guttmann by David Bolchover; published earlier this year.

helsea legend John Terry has spent many happy hours on the golf courses of the Algarve. Last year KAY CC Portugal, a consortium created as a partnership between John Terry’s agent Keith Cousins and the Dom Pedro Hotels Group, paid just under €70m for Oceânico Golf, which owns Oceânico Old Course, Oceânico P i n h a l , Oceânico L a g u n a , Oceânico Millennium and Oceânico Victoria. But it was on the prestigious Monte Rei Golf Course, overlooking the Guadiana River, in mid June that John Terry enjoyed a chance meeting with Villa boss Steve Bruce and subsequently

agreed to join Aston Villa. Terry was Chelsea’s most successful captain, having led them to five Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Europa League and one UEFA Champions League title since 2004. He is one of five players to have made over 500 appearances for Chelsea and is also the club’s alltime highest s c o r i n g defender. In 2007, he became the first captain to lift the FA Cup at the new Wembley Stadium in Chelsea’s 1–0 win over Manchester United, and also the first player to score an international goal there, scoring a header in England’s 1–1 draw with Brazil.
