DIGITAL MARKETING CONFERENCE IN VILAMOURA - AN ALGARVE FIRST
wo local movers and shakers, both marketing professionals, have set up the Algarve’s first Digital Marketing Conference. SHARE Algarve is supported by Vilamoura World and will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Vilamoura on February 4th. The objective is the sharing of knowledge between professionals and the Algarve’s business community while promoting debate on the evolution and future of Marketing. The agenda covers recent developments as well as news of the main digital platforms. Speakers include Ana Mendes, an expert on Facebook, Pedro
Caramez a LinkedIn expert and Google trainer, Marco Gouveia. The programme includes panel discussions where participants can have their questions answered by experts. The organisers intend to contribute to the development of the region’s businesses. Delegates, many from the hospitality industry, will ensure the conference is engaging and topical. Scott Bennett, the head of marketing at Vilamoura World, will be welcoming delegates to the conference and commented, "This meeting will bring together some of the best digital marketing professionals,” and he hopes this will be the first of many such events.

UNEMPLOYMENT IN PORTUGAL CONTINUES TO DECREASE
P
ortugal’s unemployment rate was down to 10.5 percent at the end of November 2016, according to a provisional figure from the national Statistics Institute (INE). The November figure for 2015 was 12.3 percent when the socialist government took over from the right-of-centre Passos Coelho coalition. The unemployment rate for
October 2016, now has been confirmed at 10.6 percent, down from the estimate of 10.8 percent. The number of people registered as out of work last November was 535,300. Unemployment among young people was 28.4 percent, slightly higher than in October last year, up 0.6 percent. For the adult population, the rate was 9.1 percent, down 0.2 percent.
FARO AIRPORT EXPANSION TO BE COMPLETED THIS JULY
C
ivil engineering work at Faro airport will be completed early this summer, according to the Minister of Planning and Infrastructure, Pedro Marques, although the work is privately funded. The €35 million current expansion and refurbishment works will enable Faro Airport to cater for the expected increase in passenger traffic. In 2016, Aeroportos de Portugal (ANA) announced that 7.6 million passengers had passed through the Algarve’s only airport, a new record, after a growth of 18.5%. Numbers in 2016 were up 18.7% on the year before and the trend continues. The completed work will allow an increase of the terminal's capacity to board and disembark 2,400 to 3,000 people per hour. The airport will have grown from 81,200 m2 to 93,120 m2, with a modernised security and retail area. The number of aircraft landing and taking off can be increased from 24 per day to 30 with parking facilities for 37 aircraft, up from the current 30. The new security area is opening next week with six additional security check points, to be followed in the first quarter of this year by the first new check-in area at the north side of the terminal. The remaining areas will be progressively opened, with completion scheduled for July this year. According to ANA, owned by the French infrastructure group, Vinci, its investment in Faro Airport will come to €78 million from between 2009 and 2017.

ilamoura Marina hosts the 39th Carnival Sailing Regatta, a sailing event that will color the waters of Vilamoura with hundreds of candles during the days 9th to 11th of February. The tournament, organized by the International Club of Vilamoura Marina, is a classic on the Portuguese sailing calendar.

ollowing the success of God Save Our Leaking Roof two years ago, The Algarveans Experimental Theatre group are now well into rehearsing a sequel. With a theme of flying on budget airlines, the 2017 Revue - Flights of Fancy, is a hilarious take on what we have no doubt all readers have experienced, comprised of 16 short, humorous sketches with musical interludes. David Butler-Cole, a longtime member of the group, conceived the revue and is also directing the cast of fifteen. The show will run at the Mascarenhas Gregório theatre in Silves for three evening performances, March 2 – 4 starting at 8pm. The following week there will be two more performances at the Auditorium in Vale de Lobo, March 10 and 11 at 8pm and 5pm respectively. he art of the ‘Cut-throat Razor’, the age-old tool of the traditional Barber is one that Alex and his business partner Dylan have perfected! We joined Alex and Dylan at ‘Alex’s Barbershop’ in Loule to see for ourselves how this very traditional method of Gentlemen’s Grooming is very much alive in a great untraditional setting! Alex’s Barbershop offers all its clients, across all generations, a great place to either design or redesign their hair or beard with all the classic cuts, together with modern twists that reflects the demand of the ‘younger gentleman about town’. The beard and moustache fashions of today demand both precision and stylish cutting, most of which have taken their inspiration from the old classics. Alex and Dylan’s repertoire give a very personal and individual look for even their most disconcerning of clients

looking for that perfectly groomed image. Alex’s Barbershop was opened in Loule one year ago, gaining popularity and cutting its way to a success ever since. The dream for Alex did however start out when faced with leaving school; his main priority was that he needed a career. Alex always had a very individual personal sense of style, which at that time made it very difficult to find a hairstylist who could keep his then ‘psycho quiff’ haircut in perfect shape. Put the two together and a dream was born! The answer was there for all to see – the art of hairdressing was calling. Unfortunately, what Alex had in mind was not a traditional path and training in Barbershop techniques in London would have lead him down a very expensive route as this training was not possible here in Portugal. Therefore, Alex took the accepted route of hairdresser training and then,

once qualified, took ‘the road less travelled’ and followed in his Dutch Barbershop idols footsteps ‘The Schorem Brothers’ and let his creative talents loose! Alex researched all he could in the art of ‘Barbershop’ - the tools, the techniques, the cuts, learning trade secrets along the way – The art of Gentlemen's Grooming was coming to Loule. Alex would be the first and the best! Alex began by opening a small shop at home, just for family and Friends, to showcase his skills and bring into play his creative flare. This very quickly began to grow, showing Alex that the time and decision to take the next step forward had at long last arrived. One of Alex’s school friends, Dylan made the decision to join him and together they began to design the Barbershop. For Alex and Dylan the interior of the Barbershop had to have the right feel and reflect their twist on the modern Barbershop. Alex has a passion for collecting and restoring old motorcycles and cars which gave him the perfect opportunity to incorporate this into the design of the Barbershop. It started with the restoration of an original Barbershop chair from Lisbon, which Alex brought back to its former glory with black leather upholstery and black two-tone painted metalwork. A much beloved 1950’s Voltswagen Beetle engine was stripped and now sports its original windscreen together with the original tax and inspection tags to form a coffee table. Not to mention an array of Motorcycle, Car and classic Barbershop

Magazines perfectly placed around the shop. A Large black leather settee gives clients a chance to wait in comfort. A 1950’s style fridge chills beers for those hotter days and for regulars who need refreshment after a long days Work, or just chatting with the boys while they wait or plot their next new look. Reclaimed wood fashioned into reception desk and cutting areas give a solid feel to the whole shop; skateboards make great shelves for all the usual grooming lotions and potions. Lots of barbershop and old car memorabilia adorn the walls. Original shaving product packaging, tortoiseshell combs, badger-hair brushes, cut-throat razors and clippers are on display in cabinets, showing that this is one art where the tools have changed very little over the years. The shop creates a sense of time lost from the 50’s ‘American Roadster’ theme to modern day; a reflection of all that is Alex’s passion which creates a real feel of being part of their world. In fact, there is a guitar that hangs on the wall from the days when both Alex and Dylan were in a band ‘The Cliffhangers’. Their claim to fame was that they did play one concert to an audience of 500 strong. But, for now the guitar hangs on the wall. The list of types of shaves ranges from cut-throat razor, scissors

or barbershop clipper or a combination. If you chose the full barbershop shave experience there is a pre-shave shampoo, traditional shaving foam applied with badger hair shaving brushes, hot towels placed on the skin to allow skin to absorb and adjust before the luxury that is the professional ‘barbershop shave’, finished with the grooming products of your choice. Alex and Dylan are invited to show their skills at Motorcycle Fairs, American Car and Motor shows along the Algarve. In Loule they have become a part of people’s lives from first shaves to their first haircuts and their first beards and from their youngest client 2 years of age to their oldest who is 80 years young. As with all entrepreneurs, Alex has plans for the coming year; his girlfriend Catia will work alongside Alex and Dylan to provide a chance for gentleman grooming to take a step further by providing facials and treatment to enhance the ‘Alex Barbershop Experience’. Alex and Dylan will always tell you that, “whenever you need to impress, a shave and haircut is where it starts. Infrared heating Can you spot the enviromentally friendly, instant heating?
W
e are so used to the great climate in Algarve that we soon forget the winters can spoil our fun very quickly. Actually, it is not the cold that makes life hard when winter arrives, it is the humidity! Algarve experiences up to 80-90 percent humidity during the nights in winter; everything gets wet, including our homes. It will take some time, but the humidity only goes inwards and, after a few months, we notice the damp and mould arriving inside our homes around January. Not only uncomfortable but very unhealthy! Poor insulation, temperature differences between rooms and humidity are all reasons for when the colder season starts we all see our electricity bill rise again. Electric heating is a very expensive luxury nowadays, especially in Portugal! Conventional heating only heats the air, which rises up. It also quickly cools down again as soon as we stop heating it making it a small fortune to keep it at a comfortable temperature. A great alternative for these expensive ways of making your life more comfortable: Infrared Heating. There are 2 lines: a basic line with Ceramic Infrared panels and Herschel, the High end line of Infrared Heating Panels. The High End Herschel line have Glass panels, Metal panels, Ceiling panels and

even Mirrors! Infrared heating panels heat the Fabric of the room and all objects including yourself, which in turn radiate back and hold the temperature much longer. The results are stunning! All that Jazz! An evening with the Jazz Blube do Museu, S. Bras de Alportel founded by Eveline and Govert Sakkers
I
spent an amazing afternoon with Dutch Founder Members of The Jazz Clube do Museu, São Brás de Alportel, Eveline and Govert Sakkers. From their Home, just outside São Brás de Alportel, the traditional Dutch coffee flowed, together with as many Stroopwafels as I could eat, as the tale unfolded of their love of jazz and how they founded The Jazz Club, just over 10 years ago. Eveline and Govert have been married for 37 years and they would definitely say that music is both their passion and their greatest joy. Both musicians, Eveline a saxophonist and Govert, a bass guitarist, have performed at the Club in the early years, but now leave the stage to their many international professional and amateur guest performers. Strangely, It was thanks to a very good friend who himself, an accomplished musician, decided to take matters into his own hands by renting a saxophone for 3 months for Eveline and offering her lessons. In turn, Govert decided that it was time to delve into his passion for bass guitar and also had lessons. They joined forces, encouraged and supported each other in their musical quests, which of course, have now become their 26 year long ‘saxophone and bass guitar affair’. In their early music days together they attended concerts in bars and jazz clubs in The Hague in Holland. Jazz being very popular in Holland and very much a Sunday afternoon event for Eveline and Govert, it seemed a natural step to take once the opportunity arrived, to re-create that same experience for their fellow ‘jazz followers’ here in the Algarve. However, this took time, as their search for live performances of Jazz was a difficult one, leading them across the Algarve, the nearest venue being Vilamoura, Olhao and Faro, but none seemed to be on a regular basis. They became very frustrated with their search until they had 2 major turning

points, firstly, a meeting at a party with a teacher of music from the Associação Filarmonica de Faro and secondly, their introduction to ‘music guru’, Sr. Zé Eduardo, who held several workshops in Spain and Tavira, which Eveline and Govert attended. These workshops enabled Eveline and Govert to meet fellow musicians and gave them the final push to take the next very obvious step for them – Open their own Jazz Club! The old 19th Century palace, which is now the Museum at São Brás was the perfect venue to hold their events. They approached the Director of the Museum Sr. Emanuel Sancho and through the ‘Friends of the Museum Association’, who have brought 30 various international active groups of to the Museum, gained their full support for the Jazz Club’s monthly gatherings and special events. Since opening their doors 10 years ago, they have organised 120 concerts and their search for artists has brought musicians and vocalists from Spain, Cuba, Venezuela, Switzerland, Holland, Brazil, Germany, England, Italy, Sweden and of course Portugal. Govert is the official photographer for the club and has an amazing collection of their visiting artists. Over the years various artists have brought their personal touch to the Jazz Club, one of which is a painting the ‘Jazz Clubs Panel’ that hangs as a backdrop on stage by Designer/Architect Sr. Miguel Mendoza. Another exciting addition was a painting

that was created during an outdoor concert by the artist Sr. Alfredo Coelho, who painted the image of Eveline and Govert ‘in full Jazz swing’ upside down so that it was impossible to see the subjects until it was finished. Eveline and Govert work hard to ensure that the Club offers something a little different - Jazz for all tastes from Traditional, Main Stream, Bebop, Funk, Latin and Blues, making this a blend and combination of all styles and schools of Jazz. Their artists’ range from duo’s to big bands. During the summer the concerts are held outside in the courtyard, which offers and amazing evening. Last summer, was the 10th year celebration of the Jazz Club which attracted 500 visitors. This year, a ‘Blues Festival’ is planned on 8th July which is promising to be a major event. The day will begin with Jazz being played in various bars in Sao Bras and then in the evening the final concert will be in the beautiful courtyard of the Museum. There will be 3 bands and a DJ. This will definitely be a day not to be missed! The Club offers great evenings in a relaxed atmosphere for regulars and newcomers alike to enjoy Jazz with friends. Everyone is made welcome! Each month on the 3rd Sunday you will find a concert in the Museum, except for August and December when they close. Tickets are available on the night, but it is advisable to arrive early to make sure you get the best seats in the house or courtyard! See you there!

Honoured by British Prime Minister! Andy Mohoney, creator of Centre Algarve is presented with the points of light award by British Prime Minister Theresa May
A
ndy Mahoney has been honoured by British Prime Minister Theresa May for creating Europe's first specialist special needs holiday centre at Moncarapacho. Points of Light are outstanding individual volunteers – people who are making a change in the community. Every week day the Prime Minister recognises an inspirational volunteer with the Daily Point of Light award. First established by President George Bush several thousand US Points of Light have been recognised in the USA. UK Points of Light was developed in partnership with the US programme and launched in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street in April 2014. Andy was given the Points of Light award after embarking on a personal crusade some eight years ago, to help those with special needs experience opportunities previously denied to them due to the lack of adequate facilities. In a personal letter, the Prime Minister congratulated Mr Mahoney on his achievements. from his company, Andy established the 24x7 Special Needs Holiday Trust Charity which now oversees the development of this exciting project. A great deal of thought and planning has gone into the project which features sensory gardens, tranquil areas, a small zoo including meerkats and aviaries where children can feed the birds, education areas, soft play area, outdoor play area, raised planting areas, picnic spots, swimming pool with hoists, shallow pool for young children and specialist disabled bedrooms with adjoining hygiene rooms and ceiling hoists. Belinda Willis, who manages the centre with her management team, has welcomed volunteers from all corners of the globe including Bulgaria, Germany, Australia, Romania, Ukraine, Netherlands, USA, Ireland and the UK. It is these unsung heroes who Andy has enthused to help make the dream come true. Sleep.. Are you getting enough?

he term sleep disorder may suggest someone tossing and turning all night, but lying awake for hours with insomnia is just one example of many conditions that affect how you sleep and function during the day. In fact, you can have a sleep disorder and not even know it. There's no normal number of hours that quantifies a good sleep. Most adults need seven to nine hours a night; others manage just fine with six. It's even possible to get too much sleep, because spending excess time in bed can be a sign of another health problem, such as depression or chronic fatigue syndrome. Finding your own ideal sleep/wake cycle is key to healthy sleep, says Carol Ash, medical director of the Sleep for Life center in Hillsborough, N.J. In a British study, scientists also found that people who are consistently sleep deprived (defined as sleeping five hours or less a night) are at greater risk for

high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems. Insufficient sleep also raises your risk for obesity, diabetes, depression, alcoholism, and automobile accidents. Plus, a 2007 University of California–Berkeley study confirmed the obvious: Sleep deprivation directly affects areas of the brain that deal with mood and concentration. Doctors need to look at both the quantity and the quality of sleep to detect a problem. When it comes to sleep quality, problems aren't always obvious to patients. An insomniac who lies awake at night can easily tell that something is wrong, for example, but someone with sleep apnea might have no idea there's a problem. The most telling sign of a disorder is how you feel during the day. If you generally wake up alert and refreshed, you're a healthy sleeper. Caring for you pet after an encounter with a processionary caterpillar
T
he Pine processionary caterpillar, *Thaumetopoea pityocampa* is a moth whose larvae inhabit and feed on pine trees all over the World, but mostly in the Mediterranean region. They are very common in the Algarve, and because the moths are attracted to the sillouete of the pine trees, they are likely to inhabit single pines and those at the border of the forest line. This means they are just as likely to be encountered in a single pine tree in a back yard, as in a pine forest. After hatching, pine caterpillars have poisonous hairs from stages L3 through L5, but most of the time they live in the trees, posing little threat to humans and animals. However, from January to April, the L5 larvae descend from the trees to bury themselves in the ground and complete their lifecycle.

They climb down the trees in processionlike lines, which no other caterpillar in the region does, and it is during this time that most accidental encounters with humans and dogs take place. Contact with the pine processionary caterpillar (lepidopterism) produces a strong inflammatory response on skin and on the mucous membranes of the mouth and eyes. The resulting inflammatory reaction can quickly lead to increases in body temperature, rapid breathing, respiratory distress, swelling of the face and head, profuse salivation and tissue necrosis, with life threatening consequences. Contact with the pine processionary is one of the most urgent conditions a pet owner can face in our region. The most immediate signs are excessive drooling, discomfort or pain in the mouth and tongue, swelling of the face and
head, and changes in breathing. If you recognize these signs, your pet needs immediate medical attention. While you reach a vet, the best way to help your friend is to repeatedly rinse the affected areas with clean water (with special attention to mouth and eyes). The poisonous hairs are dangerous to humans too, so try to avoid contact with your bare skin, mouth or eyes. As soon as you get to your vet, your pet will be provided emergency care in order to increase chances of survival and reduce the likelihood of irreversible damage to the affected areas. Photography walks Interested in learning more about all those buttons on your camera? Then this is the activity for you!
F
or some time now Dave Sheldrake has wanted to organise an informal group to help people to become a better photographer. The idea is not to offer formal teaching, but to create events advertised via a Facebook Group page where people can meet up at different locations across the Algarve and then walk and talk and take photographs. During these walks Dave will offer his help and share some of his favourite places across the Algarve along the way. Having been a professional photographer based in the Algarve for over five years now, it's a dream come true for Dave. The first of his Algarve Photography Walks took place on the 17th of January. The setting was the beautiful Sítio das Fontes near Estombar, Lagoa - And what a fabulous day it was – brilliant blue skies and warm sunshine greeted them at the Fontes. The group members were all keen to get
going and make new friends – 'it was a lovely relaxed and friendly group that gathered round to find out what was in store for the afternoon' - A comment from Alyson Sheldrake in her blog post after the walk. The walks are designed to last two hours, and will be a combination of quick demonstrations with lots of opportunities to try things out and get advice and help along the way. The group were quickly off exploring the beautiful landscape and river walk together – they were also enjoying the chance to come ‘off auto’ and discover what all the buttons and settings on their cameras are for… There was a lovely mix of abilities and cameras across the group. The idea is simply to encourage everyone and get them enjoying their photography – whatever their ability or experience and regardless of what type of camera they have.

There is no charge for the walk – Dave will be asking people to make a donation (if they can) at the end of each walk and all of the money collected will be donated to charity. As someone said on the walk as they assisted Dave with helping someone with their Nikon camera – “It’s lovely to be able to help people” Another aim is that each walk will cover different aspects of photography in a relaxed way. The group are also encouraged to post up their photos and work onto the Facebook Group’s page after each walk – Dave will also be sharing his work and tips on the site too. hen it comes to the desirability of property, it is all about location, location, location. But for property prices in general, liquidity, liquidity, liquidity is just as important. This does not refer to how easy it is to trade in and out of property, but liquidity in the financial system. Money supply can either stimulate or slow down
demand. A rising tide lifts all boats. The abundance of cheap and easy money from a loose monetary policy has benefited economic growth and employment. It also inflates prices of financial assets and could potentially lead to another economic bubble. With ultra low interest rates investors in search of a higher yield are accumulating riskier asset classes such as junk bonds and other exotic investments.

The property market is also benefiting from this. Yields in real estate are out stripping other assets such as bonds, giving a boost to the industry. Not only does a buy to let property generate a higher annual return but it can also be of use for family holidays. Over time there can be upside potential from price appreciation, which is something a saving account doesn’t offer. Over the years the ECB has been very accommodative and the outlook is that this will remain the same in 2017 and possibly beyond until the ECB sees signs that the economic recovery is on a more solid footing with core inflation near their 2 percent target. With the financial system being flush with liquidity, it is normal that some of the money finds its way into financial assets. The recovery in house prices in Portugal is just one example. However, with property prices some 30 percent below the previous peak the market is far from being overheated. The changes made a few years ago to local lodging legislation have made investment in real estate even more attractive. This legislation requires owners who rent out their property on a short term basis to holidaymakers to register at the local tax department as a business activity. The advantage of this so called ‘simplified regime’ is 85 percent of rental income was automatically considered as an expense

and therefore exempt from income tax. In other words, you were only taxed on 15 percent of your invoiced rental income. There is a flat tax rate of 25 percent, which resulted in a final rate of 3.75 percent of total rental income. However, it is estimated that only 20 percent of dwellings available for short term holiday letting are currently officially registered (Alojamento Local) and taxed. Instead of enforcing owners to comply
with the law the current government thought it is far easier to increase tax revenues by simply decreasing the part that is considered as an expense and therefore exempt from income tax from 85 percent to 65 percent. In other words, rental income in 2017 is taxed over 35 percent of your short term rental income at a rate of 25 percent, which results in a final rate of 8.75 percent of total rental income. By the year 2025 around two-thirds of the world's population will be concentrated in urban areas. A 50 percent rise in primary energy demand is predicted as a result of this, also a further rise in carbon emissions. For the cities of tomorrow, it means that a whole host of different aspects have to be taken into account, at the planning, construction and operation stages. Advancing digitalisation can be solution for this cities. Naturally Delicious and Easy to Prepare By Marco Aleixo
O
ur region's cuisine undoubtedly has a rich and varied heritage that deserves to be preserved and perfected. When we speak of something being genuine, it is good to remember that Portugal and the Algarve in particular have the oldest political frontiers in all of Europe. Our regional cuisine is something we should be proud of as it is genuine, varied, rich and healthy. The Algarvian cuisine is a combination of flavours from a generous sea with the aromas and colours of land produce, which come both from the barrocal (the central area between the Serra to the north and the Coast in the south) and the mountain areas, to produce a variety and richness of flavours which are very particular to Algarvian cuisine. When we drive up through the "barrocal" towards the mountains, we come across a change in cooking habits, which is a result of the widely developed agriculture in the area. Here we find a predominance of farm produce and meat represented in dishes such as chickpea and cabbage, lamb or kid stew, fried chicken, xarém (polenta) and Algarvian fava beans stew. Fava bean stew is a popular local dish during the cool, wet winters of the Algarve, it is warm and filling. I have added my own twist to this traditional recipe with some special ingredients and so I can call it Fava Bean Stew Marco Style.

Food made simple Ingredients: • 800 grams of fava beans • 150 grs of black chorizo (black pudding) • 150 grs of red chorizo • 150 grs of Farinheira sausage (ask at your local market or supermarket) • 3 onions • 2 garlic cloves • 3 Tablespoons of tomato sauce • 1 dl of olive oil 1dl is 1litre :10 – 1litre is 10 dls • 150 grs of fresh bacon • 1 handful fresh coriander • 1 pinch of fresh mint • 1 pinch of orange zest for the plate • 1 pinch of garlic sprouts for the plate • 1 pinch of tosted almonds
Preparation: Shell the beans. Wash in cold water and drain off the water. Put the beans in a pot and add enough water to cover the beans and boil for about 8 minutes. Drain the beans and reserving a little of the water from the pot, reserve the beans in a bowl. Peel garlic cloves and chop finely. Cut the black and red chorizo into wheels and the bacon into small slices. Wash and dry the pot and return to the stove. Pour in olive oil and let warm on medium heat, add the chorizo and bacon. Add the sliced onions and garlic and let it brown without burning. Then, add the beans and a little of the reserved bean water. Add the tomato sauce, the farinheira sausage and the bacon. Cover and cook on low for 10 to 15 minutes. To finish Sprinkle with coriander and fresh mint. Plate with the orange zest and the garlic sprouts in a soup plate.

Fava beans can also work as a complement for fried pork or fried fish.' Executive Chef Marco Aleixo heads the kitchen team at Vaults Restaurant in Almancil. He is a certified chef from the Hotel and Tourism School in Faro and has over 15 years kitchen experience in the Algarve. He is co-founder of the Algarve Cuisine Academy which offers cooking demonstrations and lessons to the public. Fiery start to the year as leaders’ speeches get markets’ attention Keep up to date with our currency expert, Client Account Executive Chantelle Frater

t has been a fiery start to 2017, with the markets having to decipher the outcome of speeches given by some of the world’s most powerful political figures, Theresa May and Donald Trump. As a result, Sterling has been the biggest mover; after hitting worrying lows early in the New Year, it has rebounded on the back of British PM Theresa May warning European leaders that the UK is prepared to crash out of the EU if she cannot negotiate a reasonable exit deal. Although May mentioned that the UK could be the EU’s “best friend” if the article 50 divorce talks went well, she also said she was prepared to walk away, which sent alarm bells ringing around the Eurozone. It appears that the PM’s plan is built around 12 principles for a clean Brexit and included a call for the UK to leave the single market and to avoid the EU’s immigration rules and being subject to the European court of justice. Whilst all eyes of late have been on the Brexit plan, there is expected to be a shift in the market
to political risks within the Eurozone as the French, German and Dutch elections take place over the course of this year. The political unrest across the Eurozone and rise of the anti-populist parties could be a determining factor into potential Euro weakness. Six things you should know about the New Additional IMI Tax Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters.

T
he start of 2017 brought with it a new property tax, which is called additional IMI Tax. This new tax replaces the Stamp Duty Tax, which was in force until 2016 and was based on the tax value of each property for housing Above EUR 1 million. The main difference between this new tax and the previous one, is that the taxation will focus on the owner (and the value of his assets) instead of the individual value of each property. In other words, in the past you were only taxed if you owned a property that was worth over 1 million Euros, now it is the combined value of all the properties and your assets - also the amount is lower (starts at 600.000€). What is the additional to IMI? It is a tax that is levied on the sum of the assets of residential real estate, owned by individuals and companies, with a value of more than 600,000 euros, and which is added to the IMI. Please note that the value considered for tax purposes, is the value registered at the tax office, which in most cases is lower than the market value or the purchase price. Real estate classified as; commercial, industrial or service; is excluded from this tax. Who pays for what? Individuals will be subject to the AIMI whenever the sum of the Property Tax Value of all their properties exceeds 600,000 euros, regardless of the individual value of each. Thus, the AIMI rate to be applied will be as follows: � exempt up to 600 thousand euros � 0.7 percent on the value exceeding 600,000 euros, up to 1,000,000 euros; � 1 percent on the value exceeding 1,000,000 euros; If taxpayers are married or living together, they may opt for joint taxation. In this situation, the AIMI rates to be paid are the following: � Exempt until 1.2 million euros � 0.7 percent on the value exceeding 1.2M up to 2 million euros � 1 percent on the aggregate equity value that exceeds the 2,000,000 euros PRACTICAL EXAMPLES: A: If a taxpayer has five properties with a total tax value of 800.000 euros. The value clears up as follows: (800 thousand euros – 600 thousand euros) x 0.7 percent = 1.400 euros B: If the taxpayer has five properties with a total tax value of 1.3M euros, the valueclears up as follows: (1 M euros – 600 thousand Euros) x 0.7 percent = 2.800 euros plus (1.3M euros – 1M euros) x 1 percent = 3.000 euros Total AIMI to pay, 5.800€ Companies will also be subject to the payment of the AIMI on the entire Tax Value of the

residential buildings owned, or where they have the usufruct. This leaves a large part of the real estate assets of companies exempt. The AIMI will also apply to properties belonging to undivided inheritance, in cases where the heirs have not yet shared assets. What are the advantages of joint taxation? As mentioned above, taxpayers who are married or living together, may opt for joint taxation of the IMI surcharge. In this way, they will only be subject to the payment of this tax when the total of the patrimonial value taxed exceeds 1,200,000 euros. In some cases, this could be the difference between paying or not paying this tax. Please see the following example: a person with a property portfolio worth 800,000 euros, will pay 1,400 euros of AIMI. However, if the holder of the house is married and opt for joint taxation, it will not pay this tax as it will be exempt up to the amount of 1.2M euros. When do I decide for joint or single taxation? If you are the single owner or the properties, but are married and or living together with your partner, you may opt for the joint taxation. This option needs to be fulfilled at the tax portal, between the 1 st of April and the 31 st of May. Please note that it’s important that you verify if the asset is registered in joint names at the tax office. In the past, it was frequent that the assets where only registered in one name, despite they were owned by both. Hence this communication is more important, as it could be the difference between paying or not the AIMI tax. When will you have to pay it? This tax will be paid each year in one single instalment in September. The tax will be based on the property tax values of the buildings and their owners, on the first day of the year. So, this means that if you owned the property in 1 st anuary, you will still have to pay this tax, even if you already sold it since then. Is it possible to deduct this tax from the IRS? Yes, if you receive rental income the AIMI tax will be deducted on your IRS. This will be considered to landlords who are taxed by category F, and choose to be covered, or who are taxed by category B. It should also be noted that this deduction is not included in the overall deduction limit. Your guide to growing Lemon, Limes and trees a-like.
Citrus trees A
lmonds Oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines and kumquats can be grown in almost any frost-free environment. Though these trees are often grown for their ornamental value, many varieties can be grown for their delicious fruit. These trees are ideal for growing in sheltered containers in cooler climates and it is very possible in our warmer climate for these trees to present flowers and fruit any time of the year due to a four to six week growth cycles. GROWING FROM SEED Choose what kind of citrus fruit you would like to grow. This may be a simple choice if you have a favorite but you may want to consider planting a variety of citrus to see what grows best in your climate. Tangerines, mandarins and satsumas are more cold-tolerant than sweet oranges and are also more tolerant of drought. Kumquats make good container plants but any citrus can be grown virtually anywhere. Seeds can be ordered or you can use them

from fruit already fallen or purchased for food. Start the seedlings by planting them in small or medium growing pots that are well drained in the bottoms. Fill the pots with rich soil that has a good amount of humus content and also add a handful of clean sand to each pot. Water the loosely packed soil before planting your seeds. Plant your seeds at least 1-inch below the surface of the soil. You can plant up to five or six seeds per 10-inch pot if you like. These will need to be transplanted into singular pots later. Make sure that the temperature is not below 40 degrees for the seedlings. Place them in a sunny part of a garden or on a sunny window sill if it is still cold outside. Citruses prefer a temperature of at least 50 degrees or higher. Keep the soil moist while seeds are germinating with a water-filled spray bottle. They should sprout within 3 to 4 weeks. Let them grow for at least 6 months before transplanting them into the ground or into bigger pots if you wish to

keep them indoors. Water them but do not let the roots sit in standing water. Orange trees can grow from 8 to 25 feet in height depending on the variety and growing conditions. Once trees are established, they grow best in the ground or in large tubs. Prune mature trees as lightly as possible. Citrus do not need heavy pruning. Most of the time they are pruned for shape and looks more than anything. BUYING YOUR CITRUS TREE Citrus trees are the misunderstood trees of landscaping. Citrus trees aren't really trees, they're shrubs. Reaching a height of 25 feet, they may be the ideal plants for your yard. But there are tricks to purchasing a good citrus tree. Buy field-grown citrus trees whenever possible, identifiable by its burlap-wrapped rootball. Such trees are more costly, but healthier. Consider container citrus trees that are not overgrown. This puts the health of the plant into question. Purchase small citrus trees that take to the ground faster. A big tree takes as long as a small tree to produce fruit. Look for consistently dark-colored leaves. The uniform color is an indication of a healthy, disease-free plant. Ensure that the graft union is approximately 2 inches above the ground. Many citrus trees are grafted. A graft union is a dog-legged bend in the trunk. If the bend is too close to or below the soil it can rot or grow fungus. Investigate the trunk for mars. Marring leaves a citrus tree trunk damaged and might indicate a weak or injured tree. You want to buy the healthiest citrus tree possible. Assess the variety of citrus trees available before you buy. Citrus trees are available in many varieties of orange, mandarin, tangerine, tangelo, kumquat, lemon, lime, grapefruit and other exotics. You can find dwarf citrus trees to buy that are great for container gardening as well.

Find out if the variety desired is available in your area. Some plants are restricted to control disease. HERE'S HOW TO PLANT A CITRUS TREE SO YOU CAN GROW YOUR OWN FRESH FRUIT. � Select a sunny spot with well-drained soil. � Dig a hole slightly less deep (about an inch) than the depth of the root ball and twice as wide. � Make the bottom flat and the sides rough, not smooth. � Remove the tree from the container by setting it on its side and gently pulling on the lower trunk. If the root ball doesn't slide out easily, cut the pot off with shears. � Set the tree in the bottom of the hole, making sure the top of the root ball sits slightly above the surrounding soil level. � Fill in around the root ball with the original soil, tamping gently as you fill in. If your soil is mostly sand or clay, amend it by blending in organic matter such as compost (add about a third by volume) before filling the hole. � Build a 4- to 6-inch-high soil berm around the tree. This is your watering basin, and it should be just a bit wider than the hole. � Fill the basin with water and let it drain. Repeat the process at least twice. CITRUS TREE PROBLEMS Citrus trees planted in the home landscape need observation to detect sucker growth and diseases. Sweet-flavored citrus is grafted to a hardy sour-orange rootstock, which produces stems known as suckers. Suckers originate from below the graft of the tree and grow tall, straight and may have thorns. Suckers are best pruned when they are small in diameter to lessen disease and shock to the tree when removed. Cut sucker branches close to the main trunk. Citrus trees have an attractive shape, fragrant blossoms and delicious edible fruit. With the proper care, a citrus tree can be

a sweet and/or sour addition to many lawns. Citrus trees like abundant sunlight. When too little sunlight is provided, a citrus tree will not fully develop, bloom or produce fruit. Citrus trees do not tolerate cold. Even a moderate freeze may kill a citrus tree. Citrus trees require deep soil with good drainage both on the surface and underground. If they do not have adequate drainage, the standing water can damage the trees. Also, citrus trees will not survive in salty soil. Citrus canker is a very contagious citrus bacteria that can cause leaf loss, damaged fruit, fruit drop and dieback. It is spread through the air or by insects, birds or humans. Yellow halo lesions or scabs will appear on the leaves, fruit, bark and trunk.
Melanose is a fungal infection that does not affect the fruit of a citrus tree, but it does make the fruit rind scabbed-like and unsightly. It does not affect grapefruit trees. Citrus trees can be damaged by insects, including aphids, citrus whitefly, orange dog caterpillars, citrus thrips, citrus bud mites, citrus red mites and snails. Many infestations can be avoided, however, by treating trees with the appropriate sprays and proper sanitation program. Don’t let any of these problems put you off planting and growing citrus tree in your garden, because the benefits of having fresh fruit to hand which taste so much better than fruit you often buy and you will always have that slice of lemon for your G&T. hat is a good g r i p ? Overlap o r interlock, strong or weak, tightly or lightly. A good grip is the one which lets you hit the most good shots! Ben Hogan believed “Good golf begins with a good grip” and a faulty grip is one of the most common causes of bad golf teaching professionals see in amateurs. A neutral grip as seen

in the inset picture with the 'V' formed by the index finger and thumb pointing towards the right shoulder is a good starting point for beginners. Grip is the predominant influence in clubface aim at impact and could be one of the reasons for the ball to curve left or right of the target. When you have found the grip which allows you to hit the most good shots then doing this consistently is the
next step. Incorporating a grip routine before you hit each shot will ensure it is the same way with each swing. One of the easiest grip routine to follow is: Get in an athletic golf posture. Hold the club out in front of you at 90° to the ground with the clubface square to the target. Now put your hands on the club ensuring when you set the club down on the ground
