Welcome... ...to your July issue of the Simply Algarve magazine. With summer well underway we bring you some great stories to sit in the shade and cool off with. Susi kicks us off (Footall in mind!) with a list of events not to be missed this month, with something for everyone you definitely don’t have an excuse to be bored. Following that, we meet the Algarve Wine Society who give us their recommendations for their favourite summer rosés, whites and, of course, tintos! Next up is Ernesto Mies, an artist whose stunning paintings of the sandbar islands are on show at the Corte Real Gallery in Paderne. Later on, we catch up with Sunseeker in the Vilamoura Marina who have exciting news about their new partnership with Finnish boat company Axopar, and Paula at DareU to check out her new clothes range and treatments. And Susi meets with Annie Moore, who has created the perfect get-away retreat in the hills for those who want to come away relaxed and refreshed. All of this along with our monthly finance, property, sport and news updates. BOOST IN SECURITY FORCES TO KEEP ‘ALGARVE SAFE’ THIS SUMMER

he ‘Algarve Seguro’ has been launched by the Minister of Internal Administration who has committed 600 security personnel to the region this summer. Eduardo Cabrita announced the numbers from the police and security forces that will spend the summer in the Algarve almost 600 of them. The programme’s aim is to deter crime, increase traffic surveillance and show a big police presence at the airport, beaches, leisure venues and bus and rail terminals. The Public Security Police is supplying 33 teams from the Intervention Corps of the Special Police Unit, a total of 390 personnel divided between Portimão and Tavira, and four teams from the Prevention and Immediate Reaction force, two in Faro and two in Portimão despite an obvious need predicted for Albufeira. To ensure greater police visibility in areas frequented by tourists, the PSP will focus their patrolling on Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão, Lagos and Faro Airport. The GNR will have around 200 personnel on permanent standby, supported by 19 vehicles and with four teams on horseback. The GNR also is to field 570 personnel to control the main summer events in the Algarve. Existing partnerships with security forces from Spain and France will continue, with Gendarmes and Guardia Civil in evidence this summer.

agoa council, having defined and approved an ‘urban rehabilitation area’ in the city at the end of February, now has approved several further areas in the municipality to safeguard local heritage. Carvoeiro, Estômbar, Ferragudo, Mexilhoeira da Carregação, Calvário, Parchal and Porches now have designated urban rehabilitation areas. According Lagoa Mayor, Francisco Martins, “this measure, applied in the main urban clusters of the county, reveals the need for the municipality to gather together a set of interventions and investments to ensure the safeguard of the built heritage and the sustainable development of the municipality.” Lagoa Council stated also that there are “a set of tax benefits” associated with each of the areas, which the owners of the buildings can access if they choose to renovate their property. Lagoa is noted for its bright red tarmac in the historic area near the old market and for the approval of a new supermarket on the Alagoas Brancas freshwater wetlands that gave the city its name.

The Aliens and Borders Service (SEF) increased it’s number of inspectors by 32% on June 1st, to improve the tourist flow through the airport. “This is a very significant reinforcement for the summer,” said Eduardo Cabrita at the launch event in Faro, adding that, “Our commitment to the Algarve is a commitment for the whole year. We want the Algarve to be a decisive component of what is today the image of Portugal, a country with high security indicators.” The Minister of Internal Affairs stated that “no one invests in a destination associated with insecurity. If 2017 was a good tourist year in the region, the image of security contributed to that success.”

NEW FILM TO HIGHLIGHT PLIGHT OF RIA FORMOSA SEAHORSES Diver, biologist, conservationist and film maker, João Rodrigues, is creating a film dedicated to highlighting the desperate plight of the Algarve’s Ria Formosa seahorse population. Cavalos de Guerra (War Horses) is the title of a film and a book that points out that in 2001, there were an estimated two million seahorses in the Ria Formosa lagoon, now there are around 100,000, the decline due primarily to their illegal capture and onward sale to the Asian market. The pollution in the Ria Formosa does not help their chances of a productive life with sewage outflows fouling the pristine environment needed for seahorses’ successful breeding. Fernandes started out with the idea of putting together a book but to this he has added the idea of the half hour film that outlines the problem and which determines that the seahorses must be saved. Talking to Sul Informação, Fernandes said that there was a need “to sensitise the community” so he collaborated with the National Geographic magazine to make Rei Formoso da Ria, (King of the Ria Formosa). “What is happening to the seahorses in the lagoon is brutal and has to be stopped,” says the biologist. After an exhibition, Águas Vivas, at the Forum Algarve, an invitation by the Secretary of State for Fisheries, José Apolinário, was made to make a photographic book on seahorses. This book will be out in November, as will the film.

FOOD & DRINK

EASY SUMMER DRINKING

Portuguese wines have a long history and offer real diversity. But when you are faced with the vast choice on offer, it helps to have personal recommendations. We asked the Algarve Wine Society for their favourites

E

very year, the Algarve Wine Society is introduced to a huge number of wines by makers from across the Iberian Peninsula – everything from entry-level, readily-available supermarket wine to superb, top-of-the-market individuallynumbered bottles of wine, lovingly created from handpicked grapes. With many a long, hot summer evening ahead and barbeques galore on the agenda, the wine choice has to be cool, light and fruity… say Society members. IN THE PINK Rosé is the perfect summer wine and Portugese rosé can hold its own anywhere on the world stage. It has come a long way in recent years, and today is as good if not better than many French, Italian and Californian rosés. These, recommended by members, are worth trying and will definitely be enjoyed:

10

BARRANCO LONGO ROSÉ – delicate lush dry rosés are in vogue at the moment but Barranco Longo Rosé 2017 is not one of those. For a start, it has a rich strawberry colour, contributing to the impression left by the bouquet and first taste, which is loaded with red fruit. Lingering longer (and why not?) notes of melon sweetness come through. This wine is a little off-dry; its greatest virtues are its versatility and easy drinking style. Good as an aperitif or barbecue accompaniment, it continues to deliver, even when no longer fridge temperature. Without question, this is an allround pleaser.” €6.99, Apolonia Recommended by Alison West BARRANCO LONGO OAKED ROSÉ comes elegantly presented with a delicate blush, perfectly tinted for

summer drinking. With 12% alcohol, it is fresh and not too sweet; the light smoky, oaky background balanced by a fruity finish. An ideal treat for a summer choice. Around €9, Apolonia Recommended by Anne Green, past President AL RIA ROSÉ This Vinho Regional Algarve is produced by Casa Santa Lima from the best parcels of Touriga Nacional and Syrah grapes, newly-planted in the Tavira area. An intense and shiny pink colour, and with an aroma of strawberries and blackberries, it is intense on the palate with a fresh, balanced persistency. An excellent choice to pair with salads, seafood, grilled meat and oriental dishes, or to simply enjoy as an aperitif. 12% alcohol. Around €2.99, Intermarché, €2.50 Jumbo Recommended by Gaynor Stapleton

President - Algarve Wine Society CABRITA ROSÉ A newcomer on the block and another from the Algarve. Fabulously clear and clean to the eye, this wine is created from an unusual blend of a rare grape, Negra Mole, and the less rare Touriga Nacional. Strawberries, pomegranate and a hint of raspberry are part of the personality. Made by Quinta da Vinha near Silves. 12.5% alcohol . Around €4.99, Apolonia Recommended by Gaynor Stapleton WHITE KNIGHTS White wines need to be chilled but not over chilled to the point of affecting the aroma and taste. Temperatures of around 10∞C are ideal. point of affecting the aroma and taste. Temperatures of around 10C are ideal.

FOOD AND DRINK

HELWIGUS An excellent citrusy vino branco is produced right here in the Central Algarve. This heavenly blend of Arinto and Tamarez is lovingly produced by Helwig Elhers Single Vineyard on a pretty hillside midway between Sta Barbara de Nexe and the small village of Agostos. The 2017 Branco is fresh and fruity, derived from good ripe grapes, and perfect as an aperitif and with salads and seafood. 12.4% alcohol. Available from the vineyard by appointment (289 999 100) €35 per case of six Recommended by Michael Berger

RIESLING – Quinta de SantÁna is a small English/German owned vineyard near Mafra in the wine region of Lisboa. It produces an excellent, and unusual, ‘Atlantic’ Riesling (2015). Overtones of lemon, herbs, pear and grapefruit make it perfect for summer drinking. 12.5% alcohol. Forprice contact quintadesantana.com Recommended by Gaynor Stapleton

PASSA BRANCO 2016 comes from the Douro and is made by the excellent wine maker Jorge Serodio Borge, oenologist for Quinta do Passadouro near Pinhao. A blend of Rabigato and Codega do Larinho, it is fresh and intense. 12.5% alcohol. €6.99, Apolonia Recommended by Gaynor Stapleton

PLANSEL SELECTA 2016 composed of 60% Gouveio, 30% Arinto and 10% Viosinho grapes, comes from the eminent Quinta da Plansel owned by the ‘King’ of vine growing, HansJorge Bohm, and is crafted by his daughter, Dorina Lindemann and her team in Montemor-o-Novo. It is a lovely light citrus colour with aromas of ripened fruits, white peach, citrus and pineapple. Eclectic on the palate and with a good finish, a favourite white wine for summer drinking. 13% alcohol. Around €5, Intermarche Recommended by David Hart

12

IN CULTO – the relatively small Casa Agricola Pinto Barbosa at Vila Nova de Foz Coa in the upper Douro Valley produces this white wine. It is made entirely from the Rabigato grape, exclusive to the region. The wine is fruity, fresh and dry and goes very well with fish. Drink it young. The taste is surprisingly long and the initial dryness gives way to a hint of apricots. In Culto is well worth seeking out on a restaurant wine list, wine shops and supermarkets with cellars. The price is remarkable for such a distinctive wine. 13.5% alcohol. €5-€6. For details of availability, email capintobarbosa@gmail.com Recommended by Clive Viney

ENCRUZADO, from the top-class Quinta das Marias winery in the Dao, is a very special and a seriously good wine, perfect to serve when you wish to impress. The Knights of the Templar brought this grape to Portugal and Peter Eckert (Quinta Das Marias) cultivated it and made a wonderful wine. 14% alcohol. €11, Apolonia Recommended by Ewald Rottland

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

SEEING RED Red wines for summer, serious drinking but suitable for ‘quaffing’ without food, are more difficult and need to be young, fresh and fruity. They can even be served very slightly chilled. AS PIAS 2016 is a fresh red, readily-available wine produced by the very good Sociedade Agricola in the village of Pias in the lower Alentejo, known in the old days as As Pias; the wine was named as a tribute to its inhabitants. A blend of Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Franca grapes, it is soft, fresh, fruity and highly affordable. 14% alcohol. €2.99, Continente Recommended by Gaynor Stapleton The same winery also sells a three-litre boxed wine called Margaca, which is very drinkable and popular for parties. Around €7 per box

om fr s n 5 Mi lé Lou

TINTO ARAGONEZ 2014 from Helwigus is another excellent fruity, summer wine. It is both light and fruity, and, when slightly cool (chill for 20 minutes before drinking), is perfect for all occasions and outstanding with a BBQ. Available from the vineyard by appointment (289 999 100) Around €45 per case of six Recommended by Michael Berger The Algarve Wine Society has 250 members representing more than ten nationalities. It is a non-profit-making Society, run by its members, and organises up to nine or ten events a year ranging from wine tastings to dinners, lunches and trips. This year the Society enjoyed a short trip to the Merida area of Spain and a three-day visit to Porto planned for October. Islands of the lagoon

Ernesto Mies lives in Seville but frequently travels to the Algarve’s Ria Formosa where he creates stunning paintings of the sandbar islands. Dotted with colourful fishing shacks and boats, his large, bold images are on display at Galeria Côrte-Real in Paderne as Carolyn Kain discovered

S

pain’s Costa de la Luz is closer to Seville but it has no similar coastal formations for the artist to visit. The Ria Formosa’s lagoon is unusual as it is protected from Atlantic waves by a line of natural sand-made islands. The shimmering water is a tranquil hideaway that appeals to Ernesto’s desire for calm. The islands shrink and grow as the tide moves in and out; three of them are inhabited – ‘Islas’ de Tavira, Armona and Culatra. Notably on Culatra there are small communities of fishermen living with their families and, on Armona, a cluster of ad-hoc holiday homes. Other much smaller islands are occupied by a few wooden shacks. Romantically infatuated by the idea of such solitude, these places are often the subject of Ernesto’s intriguing paintings. The owners of Galeria Côrte-Real recognise the attraction and have chosen a collection of Ernesto’s most vibrant paintings. Pedro Côrte-Real explains: “The ramshackle huts that he often features are not permanent dwellings but make an ideal base for storing fishing tackle and collecting large quantities of clams, ‘conquilhas’.” These shellfish can be found where the waves wash the sand around. As the tidal levels change the clams use the action to move themselves up and down the beach, quickly burrowing into a new place before they are swept away. This is the so-called ‘dance of the conquilhas’ Most easily found at low tide, the fisher-folk arrive by

14

boat onto the sandy islands equipped with buckets and shovels. They head for the shoreline where they scan the sand for air holes and tell-tale signs of tiny bubbles. The shiny twinkle of a shell or a small hard surface beneath bare feet gives the position of the ‘conquilha’ away. For more than 12,000 years, a continuous supply of ‘conquilhas’ have sustained the inhabitants of the Algarve. In the earliest years, primitive tools made of stone or bone probably assisted human efforts but, basically, the methods have not changed. The simplicity of collecting shellfish appeals to Ernesto. “Nowadays I yearn to get away from sophistication and complication,” he says. “This is reflected in my paintings, producing compositions that are clean and linear.” Classically trained, his career has spanned four decades and throughout that time his style has undergone several transitions. Many art collectors in the Algarve have fallen in love with his most recent work. For visitors to the Algarve the paintings are sometimes an introduction to the islands of the Ria Formosa. Anyone who has been there can immediately see that Ernesto has captured their bright hues and unspoiled atmosphere. ‘Galeria Côrte-Real’ is signposted from Boliqueime, Ferreiras and Paderne. Tales from an expat in Portugal Who coined the phrase “Where there’s pain, there’s gain?” And had they faced the tattooist’s needle?..

"Now I’ve really nothing against tattoos, but why do I have to have one in my face when I am sitting quietly having a bica."

I

t was a little late in coming this year, but summer has now well and truly arrived. I know this, not because it’s July and the sun is shining, or that we are eating al-fresco, or that the mercury is high and the once-green hedgerows have taken on the appearance of wilted raffia. No, I know it is summer because of the square acreage of heavily-inked, semi-naked bodies invading my space. Now I’ve nothing against tattoos, but why do I have to have one in my face when I am sitting quietly having a bica, or queuing at the supermarket cash till? Regardless of all else, there is a compulsion to read them; do I really want the overweight, shaven-headed man-mountain in front to see me taking onboard that he is a member of the Scottish Nationalist Party who enjoys giving the English a good kicking? Or, worse, peering down the décolletage of a pneumatic blonde to find the end of the sentence detailing what she did with Colin? The word tattoo comes from the Polynesian tatau meaning ‘to prick the skin’ and, in the mid- to late-19th century, pricking was taken up with enthusiasm within the circles of the European nobility, the English aristocracy, the military and, of course, the lower orders of the Navy. Both Edward VII and one of his mistresses, Lady Randolph Churchill, were inked – as was her son Winston who became Prime Minister. So, too, was Edward’s son, King George V, showing that this practice was popular at both ends of the socio-economic scale but negligibly, if at all, within the middle classes of the times. But times – and attitudes – have changed. UK 2016 figures show that 20% of all adults have at least one tattoo and, within the 30-39 age group, no less than 37% have succumbed, creating a market worth an astonishing £80 million.* Bear in mind that these figures are two years old and, if you follow popular culture, inking is now everywhere – even on the oldies. David Dimbleby got his scorpion at the age of 75, Dame Judy Dench’s 81st birthday present from her daughter was Carpe Diem inscribed on her wrist, and Felicity Kendal’s first tattoo was done when she was 62. Samantha Cameron, wife of David, has a dolphin on her ankle and Dame Helen

16

Mirren, at 70, has hinted that she may well consider having a second tattoo. Whereas I am not a fan of the heavy aggressive inyour-face, over-the-shoulder-blade, fire-breathing dragon designs, nor the full ‘sleeves’ or multi-coloured whorls, a beautifully-drawn, fine-lined motif or a few well-chosen words in cursive script can, for me, be a thing of beauty and add to the individuality and personality of the owner. Hmmm, interesting, researching and writing this piece is getting to me, I’m now pondering whether I should indulge myself and get a tat. I never rebelled when I was young; straight and narrow, that was me, inhaled once – never again, a right little tight-a***d conformist. Perhaps it’s time, my time, to get out there, live a little, hit the streets, be cool, a septuagenarian with cred. Yo Man! To find out more I took myself off to the local tattoo parlour where, according to my man with the needle, there are three distinct types of customers: the “that is what I want and this is where I want it”; the “I don’t know what I want but I want it here”; and the “I know I want one but I don’t know what to have or where to put it”. I fall firmly within the last group. While the tattooist examined his canvas by prodding, stretching and tweaking various parts of my body, desperately hunting for some nonsag skin, I contemplated the ‘where’ aspect, for placement of a tat is all important, especially if I want to rank high on the cred-meter. No problem I’m sure, but only if I go to town and have the full monty… nah-mean, I’ve gotta be cool man but not in a wimpy way… not if I want the bros’ to say: “wassup man, gimmee some skin” as they high-five me. No, I’ll have to show my bottle and be inked even where there’s bone or nerve endings – hands, ribs, inner arm, anywhere that will produce pain. That will tell them I’m hard, but will it be sufficient to gain mega cred? The see-through hair will have to go, as will the Sebego boat shoes and pastel linen shirts. I’ll have to learn to talk the talk and walk the walk. Will my knees be strong enough to make my moves to Mariah? Will my lungs allow me to inhale more than once? Will I have to buy Calvin Klein underpants, have the logo on show and walk around stripped to the waist? But, most importantly, when it’s done, will I want to sit next to me? *sources: UK Daily Telegraph; British Institute of Dermatology

Sam’s top things to do while staying in your villa on Holiday...

sually I try to write about different experiences and hidden places you can visit and try for yourself. This time I will be talking about experiences you can try at home, for those who do not want to leave their villa during the holiday (me!). One of the reasons I love my job is I get to try all these luxury at-home services before offering them to my clients. Starting with the most popular service, at home massages, we have been working with Natalie (the massage therapist) for three years in a row now, and she is absolutely amazing...you will literally melt with her amazing hands. My favourite part? Natalie will

go to your holiday property, set up everything and give you one of the best massages (if not THE best) in your life for only €60 an hour. I simply cannot recommend her enough. And for the ladies, we work with a great company that does beauty treatments at home, including pedicures, facials and blow drys. Now this one, I have to be honest, I have not personally tried, but the feedback we have received has always been extremely positive. So if you want to spoil yourself for a day you know who to contact. Now if you are on holidays, sometimes you don’t feel like cooking (after all parents do deserve a holiday!) we offer the most amazing in-house catering, from a mouthwatering brunch with mimosas, a ready-pack

with BBQ meat and sides delivered to your door step to a fine dinning cook for you and your better half. You simply cannot go wrong with this one. For the active people who want to keep fit during their holiday, we can organise a world-class yoga teacher, personal trainer or even a swim instructor for you and your kids. Now doesn’t this sound like a truly relaxing and unforgettable holiday? You will no longer need another week off work to get over your vacation! Want to know more about our inhouse services? Or book any of these? Simply contact me via contact@bluesky-villas.com and I will deal with the rest. contact@blue-sky-villas.com

Consequences of a long winter

T

he lack of sun in the Algarve this year combined with the low temperatures has made it one of the most prolonged winters in recent memory. With the days already beginning to shorten, one cannot help wondering if summer this year will happen at all. However the poor weather has not had a negative effect on property purchases in the first half of this year. Irrespective of which data analyst you consult, all agree that property sales and property prices throughout Portugal are up. With increased investments from non-Portuguese buyers (with help from the controversial golden visa

Property expert Paul Greenhalgh advice on the current property market

and NHR schemes) the demand for property on the Algarve is at heights not seen for 25 years. Moreover the average price of property has now surpassed the highs of 2007. The problem being faced now is a real shortage of new listings being brought to the market. According to the INE, the number of licensed buildings and completed apartments on offer is less than half that of 2008 and whilst the council planning departments continue to take an infuriating amount of time to process building applications, it is difficult to see this improving anytime soon. Of course this is a scenario that is influencing price increases, not just in

the Algarve, but throughout Portugal. There is a question we are asked frequently ….. “Is it the right time to buy a property?” Well the indications say yes. Property sales in Portugal are showing no signs of slowing down and with the rating agency Fitch predicting prices in Portugal will continue to grow in 2018 and 2019, confidence should remain high. Portugal has continued to perform better than the economic forecasters predicted with tourism and exports leading the way with impressive figures year on year. Portuguese banks are once again more willing to offer mortgage loans for the purchase of property and with the low interest rates still being offered, it could be the perfect time to seek a mortgage. It is important to note that even though there has been an increase in purchases and property prices, there is very low exposure to risk because this increase is not being excessively financed by banking credit comparing to the time leading up to the crisis. Buying a new house or a holiday home in the Algarve is still a great possibility, but it is important for the market that buyers do not pay overinflated prices on property. The Algarve is still one of the cheapest places in Southern Europe to buy property and outside of the major resorts, property is still affordable. As a buyer, always seek the advice and expertise of a local and longestablished real estate agent, otherwise you could be the one that pays well

Where better to reach out to an ever-growing audience of boating enthusiasts? In the northern half of the country, Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers access to the River Douro and valley, 125 miles inland. Further south, the Rio Tejo (Lisbon, Cascais and Estoril) gives access to beautiful bays, magnificent bridges and dramatic scenery, while heading down the country, the Sado Estuary can be likened to

And finally, dotted all over the country, there are fascinating and majestic lakes, including Castelo de Bode, Rio Caldo and Alqueva, surrounded by charming traditional villages and with fully-served marinas. It is hardly surprising, with the breadth of opportunity available to those with a passion for water travel, that

Portugal has hit the boating big time. “It’s not all about the need to own a significantly large yacht here,” says Steve Handy, the dealer for Axopar in Portugal. The 24ft Axopar, the hugely-successful Axopar 28ft and the largest, the Axopar 37ft range, make sense for a lot of boat owners on a number of different levels. “With sheltered channels, inland lakes, estuaries and rivers that gently meander through stunning, ancient valleys and

are used to captaining larger boats; it’s an opportunity, perhaps, that will remind them of the fun and excitement that can be had from getting back behind the wheel of a smaller, more nimble craft – one that’s closer to the water, yet still turns heads for its proven dynamic ability and cool-looking, contemporary style.” “Having witnessed the stratospheric growth of Axopar in recent years, we know it is perfect for this region,” says Steve. “The unique deck design features, exhilarating

Time to make a currency transfer? Stack the odds in your favour Keep up to date with our currency expert Chantelle, Client Account Executive at Currencies Direct

"With Brexit still on the horizon and markets eying a possible rate hike from the Bank of England later in the year, there stands to be some significant shifts in EUR/GBP over the coming months."

S

o far 2018 has seen the EUR/GBP exchange rate fairly range bound, with 2017’s wild Sterling swings appearing to be a thing of the past. However, with Brexit still on the horizon and markets eying a possible rate hike from the Bank of England later in the year, there stands to be some significant shifts in EUR/GBP over the coming months. This could greatly impact the value of any transfers you make, so what options do you have to help protect you from further exchange rate chaos? Spot transfer A spot transfer is a currency transfer made immediately using the current market rate. This option is ideal for quickly taking advantage of any favourable shifts in the market, or for those times when a timely transfer is crucial.

a more favourable exchange rate then you may wish to consider a limit order, which will automatically transfer your funds as soon as your target rate is hit. Complementing this, is the stop-loss order, which allows you to set a worst-case exchange rate for your currency transfer. The two order types can even be combined to create a target range for your transfer, giving you greater control over your money. For more information and further details of how they can help you make the most of your transfers, please contact Chantelle at the Almancil office of Currencies Direct on +351 289 395 739 or alternatively visit their website on www.currenciesdirect.com/portugal and register to get regular updates on the currency markets, (please mention Simply Algarve magazine as how you heard about them).

Forward contract Sometimes you may find that a shift in the EUR/GBP exchange rate leaves it in an extremely favourable position, but you aren’t quite ready to make a transfer - an outcome which often occurs during the time-consuming process of purchasing or selling a foreign property. However, a forward contract allows you to freeze an exchange rate for up to a year, granting you the peace of mind that your transfer will be protected from any negative shifts in the markets before you’re ready to move your money. Market orders Markets orders offer expats the ideal way to target a specific exchange rate without fear of being left high and dry should EUR/GBP swing in an unfavourable direction. If you’re in no hurry with your transfer and are willing to wait for the possibility of

Finance

How do you submit a claim for errors in your personal income tax?

I

Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters

f you have received the settlement of your IRS and detected any errors made by the Tax Authorities on their calculations, find out what your rights are and how to issue a formal complaint. The submission of IRS tax returns relating to income in 2017 was done in the months of April and May, this year. The tax settlement notes should be received by all tax payers during June and July, but some of tax payers may receive them later, especially in the case of Non-Habitual Residents. If you have received the settlement note and realised that there was an error on the calculation of the final accounts, or if the amount is much different to what you have forecasted, you may file a complaint to the Tax Authorities. But beware: before you decide to submit a claim, is important to check that you have reason to do it. When it concerns errors in withholding taxes, for example in the case where the entities to whom the taxpayer worked did not declare those amounts. If the taxpayer has with him a proof of the actual values of withholding taxes that were held last year, he must submit a complaint and attach the documents that prove the merits of that complaint. It’s also important to pay attention to your post box, as in some cases the tax authorities demand that you confirm at the tax office or through the portal, some of the expenses declared. This happens mostly in the case of IRS declarations which include the sale of properties or longterm rentals. If for any reason you do not confirm these expenses, they can be erased from your declaration and a new tax bill is sent to your address. Do not forget the legal deadlines If you are going to issue a complaint, do not forget that you must do so within the legal deadlines. In the case of complaints related to the settlement of the IRS, taxpayers may do it within 150 days of notification of the settlement, or up to 120 days after the payment date. An important point: the rules indicate that taxpayers may not have both an internal appeal and ask for judicial review on the same fact. “It cannot be made a complaint when a judicial review has been lodged on the same basis”. This means that first the taxpayers must issue a complaint with the Tax Authorities and wait for the decision. If it is unfavourable and the taxpayer is still not convinced, then he can advance to the hierarchical appeal and/or request a

38

judicial review. Tracking the evolution of the claim? After presenting the administrative claim, you can track the status and progress of your complaint at the Tax Portal. The system will tell you the process number, the date and details of the tax in question, the tax office where the complaint has been filed and the process situation on a given date. Here are the various stages through which the internal appeal process can pass, according to the information contained in the Tax Web Portal. 1 Initiation: The process was initiated in the service of finance. 2 Instruction: finance services are to instruct the file containing the information required for the decision. 3 Waiting for distribution: The process has not yet been distributed to technical for consideration. 4 Assessment: The process has already been distributed to the technician who is preparing the decision. 5 Referred to the Finance Director: The case was referred to the regional peripheral organ of tax administration, the competent authority for the decision. 6 For Preliminary Hearing: the draft has been prepared pending the exercise of the right to a prior hearing of the complainant. 7 Wait Decision: It has been exercised prior hearing and the new elements raised at that hearing will be taken into account in the decision to be taken. 8 Termination by Upheld: The process was terminated, and the claim of the complainant deserved appointment. 9 Partial Deferral of Extinction: The process was terminated, and the claim of the complainant deserved partial success. 10 Rejection by Extinction: The process was terminated, since the claim of the complainant deserved appointment. 11 Filing for Extinction: The process was terminated by objection of inadmissibility or because the person concerned, upon written request, gave the procedure. 12 Termination for transfer to another service of Finance: The process was terminated because the tax office which was established was not competent for the decision. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your personal situation, whether this is related to IRS or any other tax advice. Our details are opposite.

Fashion

DELICIOUSLY DARING When an established lawyer with a pedigree of professional excellence decides to go into business, you know everything will be perfect, down to the last little detail

T

he formula for a high-fashion boutique that offers a great selection of beauty therapies alongside those must-have dresses is complex. A fine eye, a highly-tuned awareness of trends, an understanding of customer needs and wants, and a real sense of business (and well as a sense of humour!) are essential to the equation. All too often, hopefuls hop on the retail bandwagon without really understanding the possible pitfalls that can come along – often out of the blue – and play havoc with the cash flow. Being a lawyer, Lisbonite Paula Esteve recognised more than most of the need to keep a business tightly controlled and strategically managed, so when she decided to start a new chapter in her life, she was already equipped with the basics that pave the way to success. “I have always loved fashion,” she says, “especially when its personality is that intriguing combination of elegance and sensuality. I also adored anything beauty-related, so it made sense, when I decided to change my life’s work, that I brought together those two passions.”

40

Paula first came to the Algarve to help her father who owned two hotels in Albufeira. Later, having turned his company round, instead of returning to the capital, she looked for premises within the golden triangle, drew up her business plan, and got started. Dare U in Almancil is the result of her research into the local market, her knowledge of business, and her find of the ideal location. It is a charming building, originally a restaurant, with individual spaces and a wonderful sense of privacy. There are gardens that are almost secret, ceilings that slope, and windows that let in the light to show off rails of gorgeous clothes.. Not for the timid are Paula’s handpicked – and often hand-made – dresses and accessories that fall very much into the ‘going out’ category. Forget comfy trousers and cool kaftans; her style is glamorous and sexy, red carpet rather than golden beach, designed to emphasize curves. Skirts are short and sleek, tops sculpted close to the body. Colours go from the brights – yellows, pinks and green, to inky blacks and brilliant reds. This is what special-occasion

dressing is all about – statement-making, contemporary and confident. And there is poolwear, but not as you know it. Dare U’s choice is pure wow-factor, strictly for the very adventurous. Beauty and the feast But key to the Dare U success story is what Paula and her team can do to get clients looking and feeling gorgeous and with a healthy glow before they even start thinking about additions to their wardrobe. And bridesto-be, here in the sunshine to celebrate their big day, are catered for with special hair and beauty packages that are often also a gift to bridesmaids. So what is on the menu? You name the most modern and proven-successful treatments, and Dare U will provide them. There are the essential manicures and pedicures that a girl cannot go without, full hairdressing services, including extensions and wigs, and every conceivable treatment for the face and body, including Botox and fillers. There is laser waxing, jet bronzing, eyelash extensions and microblading and Thai massages that will leave you feeling amazing. You could, in fact, spend every day in Dare U and enjoy every minute. And while you are luxuriating in the beauty rooms, or trying on a decadent little party dress, the man in your life can have the best hair cut ever in the barbershop room. People Experiences

Y

Everyone deserves time out to relax, refresh, assess, enjoy and discover a personal sense of well-being. A new retreat, the vision of Annie Moore, that combines yoga, meditation, relaxation arts and crafts has opened in the hills of Betunes offering life- and attitude-changing experiences

oga teacher Annie Moore, above, and her interior designer husband, Terry, fell in love with the Algarve when they first visited 30 years ago. In 2002, after countless family holidays here and with the children thinking the Algarve was their second home, the couple began their search for land in the hills, with amazing views and just 20 minutes from the sea. It took years to find exactly what they wanted – a plot that met everything on their wish list, including a small ruin. Sheer perseverance paid off. They

46

applied for planning permission to build their dream house and, two years later, Casa Vida was the result. Inspired by the garden created by the late film director Derek Jarman on the shingle shore near Dungeness, they used rocks, sleepers and shingle, cactus, grasses and olive trees to landscape the area, and built a house that is the perfect mix of traditional craftsmanship and design, with contemporary cool. At the time, Annie had little thought of bringing her professional interests with her to the Algarve. Her practice

of yoga had always been a part of her life, with daily rituals of meditation, breath work, postures, relaxation, visualisation and healthy nutrition. She had given up a highly-successful career as a shoe designer to follow, and then share, her passion for wellness. When her daughter fell ill with ME at the age of 11, Annie met a natural therapist who put her child on the road to recovery, drawing Annie to alternative therapies. She began training in holistic therapeutic massage and aromatherapy. “Mixing oils and potions became a way of life,” she says, “and I became known as the ‘natural-remedy mum’.” Later on, when the children went off to university, Annie opened a health and wellness spa, Vidatherapy, in South West London, to both service her existing clients and at the same time to offer a greater variety of treatments along with a number of other therapists. The business soon built a reputation as the place to go for wellbeing – offering a huge variety of therapeutic massage treatments, Reiki healing, osteopathy, acupuncture, pregnancy and fertility treatments and more.

A new way of life In 2016, Annie sold the business, to follow a particular passion, taking a yoga teacher training course in Ibiza. The vision then, running teaching classes in Surrey, was to teach yoga to family and friends who came to stay in the Moore’s second home, in the Algarve. The enthusiasm and encouragement that came from those visitors to the sun, confirmed that there was the potential to create a beautiful, peaceful retreat space in amazing natural surroundings with 360-degree views. And so the Casa Vida Yoga Retreat was born. The beautiful space at the end of the garden overlooking the valley with views to the sea, was a natural home for a yoga deck, shielded from the sun by a vast shade, and a treatment pergola, tented with muslin hangings that float in the breeze. “We offer a day retreat hideaway experience for anyone living or visiting the Algarve,” explains Annie. “No previous yoga or meditation experience is required. We are appealing to like-minded beings who are looking to explore and investigate other aspects of themselves.

Experiences

A typical retreat day at Casa Vida starts at 8.30am with guided meditation and journaling thoughts, followed by a 90-minute session of Integral yoga flow. There’s a snack break at 11am – healthy and hugely delicious home-made green matcha, coconut and lime energy balls or cacao and tahini bliss balls with buckwheat breakfast bars or oaty and maple flapjacks. Then it is time for relaxation round the pool or the option of massage treatments. Lunch from the yoga retreat kitchen includes homemade savoury feta cheese cake with pickles and fig jam, a green salad of avocado, peppers, cucumber, pumpkin and pine nuts with mint and yoghurt dressing and a salad of tomatoes, mozzarella, black olives, basil and poppy seeds with a sumac and balsamic dressing. The afternoon programme includes creative workshops, exploring drawing, collage or mala bead jewellery making, and a serving of fresh mint tea with home-made cake, and finishes with Integral yoga and yoga Nidra relaxation, chanting and singing bowls. float home feeling refreshed, relaxed and renewed. A day like no other To many, the creative workshops that are an integral element of the Retreat offering, provide yet another avenue for self-expression, teaching guests to use colour freely and without inhibition, for example by drawing without looking at the paper. “We guide our guests to work with colours, marks and shapes in ways that gently coax them to produce beautiful images as part of a creative process that represents what they are feeling and experiencing,” says Annie. “The work is compiled in a personal journal, which they use throughout the day to also record their thoughts. The journal becomes an important record of their experience, to be treasured and referenced after leaving the Retreat.” Casa Vida Retreat classes and day courses run from June to September. The Retreat is open to small groups with a maximum of six people, and to individuals. The day

cost is €75. Accommodation is not available as part of the programme but, of course, the majority of visitors will be local residents or holiday-makers anyway. It is Annie’s firm belief that there is real benefit to be gained from taking quality time out to invest in yourself. “Having the opportunity to become immersed in a healing journey of self-discovery can impact mind, body and soul in a way that perhaps most of us do not normally have the time to investigate,” she explains. “Our skills and experience as teachers and mentors give us the tools to guide and nurture individuals towards a space where they can tune into their senses and connect with their spiritual side. Anyone wishing to overcome stress, anxiety, depression and the challenges of the real world will benefit from our Retreat. We can facilitate the mindset of reaching out to ‘follow your dreams’. With regular practice, you can learn how to calm your thoughts, focus your mind and live in the present moment. This can have a powerful effect on individuals and transform lives.

“Our intention has always been for the Retreat to evolve naturally into a destination where guests can escape from their everyday pressure and learn new skills in a loving and joyful environment with like-minded souls. We would like to feel that by helping them to unleash their fears of the unknown they can continue on their life’s journey feeling happier, peaceful and more balanced within themselves.” Sounds good? Without question. Does it really work? Yes, it does. Ask anyone who has taken a day out of their schedule in a quest for change. And it makes you think… and re-evaluate. Even a confirmed set-in-their-ways workaholic has much to gain from an improved sense of well-being. I am making my booking now.

IBERIAN VICTORS!

he Bowls Algarve team returned victorious from their three days of competition bowls in southern Spain. As guests of La Posada Bowls Club, Alameda near Antequera the fourteen strong party were on top form as they won the coveted trophy which returned to Portugal for the first time since its inception. Tour organiser Frances Reynolds and team captain George Hamblin were elated with their success; a true team effort. The group also enjoyed a friendly session against the Saydo Bowls Club near Mollina. The Bowls Algarve team consisted of players from various clubs including the Balaia Bowls Club, Albufeira.

F SPORTING SAGA CONTINUES

T

he turmoil in the ‘green half’ of Lisbon continues unabated following the attack by a masked gang of the club’s own supporters when the team failed to qualify for the Champions League. Nine players have rescinded their contracts including Portugal internationals William Carvalho, Gelson Martins, Bruno Fernandes and Rui Patricio. Together with highly rated Dutch striker Das Bost they filed notice with the Portuguese Securities Market Commission that they were breaking their contracts claiming ‘just cause’. In addition, manager Jorge Jesus has left and signed with Saudi club Al-Hilal. Meanwhile beleaguered Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho has insisted: “There is only one reason and it’s not down to what happened at the training complex or the nightmares. It’s money.” A club statement added: “The board of directors considers the contractual terminations presented by the players to be illegal, due to the lack of a fair cause, so it will seek to hold those players and the clubs with which they sign a contract of employment for the damages and losses suffered, with the expectation of being accordingly, duly reimbursed.” Portugal’s international keeper Rui Patricio, who earlier this summer would have cost €20m, has signed on a ‘freetransfer’ four-year deal with newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers. There is no doubt that there will be more twists-andturns before the new season gets underway in August.

A DAY TO REMEMBER FOR CRISTIANO RONALDO

riday 15 June was a memorable day for the world’s greatest footballer. Firstly the Spanish authorities announced that he had been fined €18.8m and given a suspended two-year jail sentence for tax avoidance. Later in the day, the muchmaligned bust of Cristiano Ronaldo at Madeira Airport was replaced by one that presents a greater likeness to the island-born superstar and then, to cap-it-all, the maestro scored a hat-trick including a stunning freekick in the 3-3 draw with Spain in their opening World Cup game in Russia. Even before kick-off Ronaldo appeared to be savouring the occasion. Two of the more than a thousand children who served as player escorts for the World Cup were lucky enough to be standing in front of him while the National Anthems played. They looked adoringly up at the soccer superstar and were beyond delighted when he looked back down at them and smiled. Their reactions were absolutely priceless. As the Iberian duel approached its final moments, referee Gianluca Rocchi awarded Portugal a free-kick 22.23 metres from goal. With exactly 87 minutes and two seconds on the clock Ronaldo had the chance to score his, and the World Cup’s 51st hat-trick. Rolling up his shorts, totally focused and with the look of a man who knew exactly where his shot would end up, he hit the ball with pinpoint accuracy at an unbelievable 97.4kms per hour and just 0.82 seconds later the ball had gone around the wall, past a stricken David De Gea and into the back of the net.

Golf

Can a Golf Course be TOO tough? Richard Hudson and Eddie Charnock, Algarve Golf Guru, PGA Professionals ask the question on everyones mind after a controversial US Open!

T

he US Open is often the toughest Major of the year in terms of course setup with quick greens, strong winds and long rough making players struggle. Everything this year got too much for one top player, Phil Mickleson, seen in the picture above, running and then striking a moving ball on the green. (We must point out this was on Saturday when the golf course was tough and tricked up beyond fair!) For one major of the year at least, it is good to see that accuracy, not just power and putting, comes to the fore. Thinking your way around the golf course, club selection and choice of shot is as important – if not more important – than hitting the ball. How many golfers have you played with who appear not to play very well but come in with a great score? This is usually down to course management,

rather than a matter of luck! In the Algarve, home to some of the best golf courses in Europe, how much do you enjoy the challenges when playing the tougher courses – Laranjal, Quinta North and South with their big quick greens;Vila Sol with those narrow tree-lined fairways and small greens; and Monte Rei just simply tough all round, to name just a few. When you leave these courses you look forward to returning to face the challenge again and again, so maybe this answers the questions raised about the US Open. If you would like to contact Richard or Eddie to book an oncourse playing lesson on one of Algarve’s toughest, Vila Sol, to sort out your course management skills or any other golfing needs visit www.algarvegolfguru.com or email sales@algarvegolfguru. com and mention Simply Algarve as a point of referral.
