ith the exception of the Lagoa and Vila Real de Santo António council areas, the Algarve is at high, very high or maximum

fire risk. The classifications issued by the Portuguese weather service (IPMA) reports that the Loulé and São Brás de Alportel areas are at the ‘red alert’ maximum risk level at time of writting. At the orange level, ‘very high risk of fire,’ are Aljezur, Monchique, Silves, Tavira, Alcoutim and Castro Marim, while others are on high risk, except Lagoa and Vila Real de Santo António which are on ‘yellow alert’. The risks remain very real across most of the region with all those involved in the prevention and fighting of fires, on maximum alert. Further classifications will be released but with no rain forecast, little change is expected. Up to the minute details are always available on fogos.pt.

GUADIANA PROJECT RECEIVES CROSS-BORDER FUNDING

he Energy Services Regulatory Authority has proposed a reduction in electricity prices starting on January 1st, 2018. The 0.2 percent reduction will be the first time prices have gone down in 18 years but the impact will be almost unnoticeable for domestic consumers - for example, an invoice of €45.70 will drop by just nine cents. This reduction will have an effect which is “not very noticeable for consumers,” admits the ERSE. The formal regulatory gobbledygook reads, “The variation between 2017 and 2018 of the tariffs for the sale to final customers in Low Voltage Normal (BTN) of the final providers proposed to the Tariff Board is a reduction of 0.2 percent.” We must travel back in time to the year 2000 to find a price drop for electricity in Portugal so this news is welcome but not earth-shattering. In a statement, the Secretary of State for Energy, Jorge Seguro Sanches, pointed out that “this is the second consecutive time that national consumers will benefit

from this legislative package in order to control electricity costs.” Sanches highlighted “the set of legislative measures approved by the Government to enhance the transparency, rigour and competitiveness of electricity prices,” referring to an end to the EDP scam of charging its customers for the annual ‘Extraordinary Contribution from the Energy Sector,’ which has cost consumers an extra €500 million in the past ten years. “This rate change for 2018 results from the combination of several factors with impacts in opposite directions,” notes the ERSE, pointing to “debt service, fuel cost evolution, transfers from the Systemic Sustainability Fund of the Energy Sector, and the review of the level of efficiency required by regulation and costeffective legislative measures.” The discount for poorer customers on the social tariff will stay at 33.8 percent and “will have a reduction in the monthly electricity bill in the amount of 5 cents on an average monthly invoice of €20.40,” the ERSE concludes.

Autumn’s beautiful roasted chestnuts!

fter a hectic nevertheless successful summer, the Algarve is finally starting to wind down with Autumn’s arrival (Or shall we say... Summer 2.0) How do you know Autumn has arrived in Portugal? Definitely not by the weather! But instead, you start seeing food carts everywhere, followed by the mouthwatering smell of freshly roasted chestnuts, yum! Not only do they taste delicious but are an easy snack to cook at home with the family. All you need is chestnuts & salt, that is it! Start with preheating your oven to 200 Celsius. Wipe the chestnuts down with a damp cloth and set them on a cutting board, flat side down. With a small and sharp knife (carefully!) cut an X in each chestnut. The X allows for the steam to escape. Do not skip this step as the nuts might actually explode, and no one wants to clean that mess up. Put the chestnuts in a baking trey, X facing up and add some sea salt. Throw them into the oven for 20 - 30min (I personally like to add some more salt once the chestnuts start to open up).

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

Now the challenging part is figuring out when they are completely cooked. With over or undercooked chestnuts, peeling the inner skin is quite annoying. Ideally they should be pealed when they are still warm (not hot) however if they are cooked to perfection, the skin should come off easily. And that is it, super simple and rewarding. A healthier option for movie nights. See you next month, Sam Will you try this recipe? If so let me know how it went under, contact@blue-sky-villas.com

Dining Authentic and traditional Portuguese flavors: Peas with Eggs, from Chef Osvalde Stange Silva, Restaurant Louro at the Conrad Algarve.

O

svalde Silva brings the start of a new series in the magazine titles “Devine Dining”. Every month we will have a dish of the highest quallity available for you to enjoy somewhere here in the Algarve. Osvalde was born in 1976, in the German city of Dusseldorf, returning to Portugal with his family by the end of the 80’s, where he found his passion for cooking. Graduating from the Hospitality School of the Algarve, Osvalde started his career as a Chef at Vila Vita Parc, where he remained for 5 years. After this experience, he was invited to join the Michelin-starred, Ermitage restaurant, near Vale do Lobo, as Sous-Chef. After several experiences in 5 star hotels throughout the Algarve, Osvalde was then invited to join the kitchen of Convento do Espinheiro, in Évora, as Sous-Chef a position that he immediately accepted, being subsequently promoted to Head Chef. In 2013, Osvalde joined the chain Starwood as Head Chef of Sheraton Algarve & Pine Cliffs Resort. Osvalde is now Conrad Algarve’s Executive Chef, overseeing all the outlets of the resort (excluding Gusto By Heinz Beck).. The concept is traditional Portuguese cuisine, using the unique characteristics that the specific climate, geography and geology have on the region’s produce. At Louro you can gain a privileged taste of the heritage and tradition of Portuguese cuisine. Almancil – Praça Sá Carneiro, 10 Quinta do Lago – Quinta Shopping, Loja 33 www.edjoia.com

Energy sufficient in multiple ways

Sustainable Superstore partner Drymat systems Portugal explain how you can save money on bills and repairs from damp damage to your home.

O

ne of the worlds famous museums is the Heremitage Museum in St. Petersburg Russia ,admired by millions of visitors each year it needs lots of attention to keep the museum, its beautiful paintings and its structure up to date. Although from the outside it looks perfect, for over more then 200 years the museum suffered from a severe rising damp problem resulting in the need of replastering and repainting most of the walls each year, which doesn’t solve the problem. Also, because of all that humidity in the museum, the old paintings needed a lot of attention and treatment throughout the year to avoid the devastating effect humidity has on them. Around 18 years ago a German electrical engineer and 3 professors finished a 10 year long study and experimental fase, resulting in the development of a unit which is built specificly to eliminate rising damp in old and even new buildings. The unit gives magnetic pulses which change the polarity of the water molecules in the walls and floors, so that together with the negative loaded earth the water molecules are pushed down slowly until they sit underneath the foundation of the houses. Between 1 and 2,5 years this is achieved and while the unit keeps on giving the magnetic pulses the water molecules stay underneath the foundation and never come up again. So after a very satisfied test installment in the Heremitage (see picture) 191 units

10

are installed now, humidity is gone, no more dehumidifiers needed, no more yearly repairs on paint and plaster and all paintings now stay in a good shape because humidity (which is gone now) does not effect them anymore. A side effect of the installed unit (the size is only 20 cm x 20 cm and for houses up to 250 m2 usualy 1 unit is suficient) is that it not only eliminates the existing rising damp but it also will prevent rising damp occurring in the future, this is why especially in the Algarve, where many old and new houses suffer from rising damp, we are being asked more and more to install the system in houses just being built to avoid humidity problems in the future. HOW THE UNIT BECOMES A MONEY SAVER ● After the floors and the walls are dry, heating your house will save you 25 percent to 65 percent on your heating costs (dry walls and floors need much less energy to heat up) ● Many people try to tackle the rising damp by using dehumidifiers. They are in fact counter productive as they extract humidity from the air as well as from the walls and the floors causing both to get a bit dryer but only for them to suck up more humidity from the wet earth underneath the house, a vicious circle. Dehumidifiers are big energie consumers and only increase the rising damp problem. With the unit fabricated in Germany, installed dehumidifiers become totally unnecessary. ● Instead of sometimes yearly repairs

on the plaster and paint, after the house is dry , it is only needed once and then the house will stay dry for at least the next 35 years , so a new layer of paint every 15 years will be sufficient. OTHER BENEFITS The unit itself does not need any maintenace and represents a €10 yearly energy cost. There is a 20 year guarantee on the unit, however, proved by tests we know it will work at least 35 years (after this test in a time accelerating machine the unit still worked 100 percent). Also we have a moneyback guarantee if 3 years after installation humidity levels on the groundfloor exceeds the 3 percent level or the basement exceeds the 6,5 percent level. Many references are available from people who installed the system years ago, free control measurements are taken on a regular basis and people who want to find out more about the system can contact us for a free humidity survey. Last but not least, living in a house without all that hunidity is much better for our health and will avoid humidity related illnesses in the future. PURPLE CARROTS VILAMOURA PIRI-PIRI CHICKEN There’s much speculation as to the origin of piri-piri, the small bird’s eye chilli pepper, now endemic to much of sub-Saharan Africa. Here lies the clue, as piri-piri is indeed an African word, from the Swahili meaning pepper-pepper. Although the chilli pepper originates in South America, it was the Portuguese that then took You will need:

• 1 free-range chicken, cut into 8 or 10 pieces • 4 chouriço sausages, Purple cut into thin strips, julienne style. • 120 g green olives • 250 g cherry tomatoes • 9 sprigs oregano, cut in half. • 2 lemons, thinly sliced • ½ teaspoon of chilli flakes or dried piri-piri flakes • olive oil • sea salt • black pepper

it to Africa and subsequently to India. The famed piri-piri sauce is used to great effect on grilled chicken, with the birds generously basted with it as they are barbecued. The subtle flavours of this Portuguese signature dish are hard to beat, but here’s an easy-to-prepare variation of the classic.

P

reheat the oven to 200ºC. Line a large baking tray with greaseproof paper. Mix all the ingredients by hand on the tray and then roast for 30 to 35 minutes until the chicken is cooked and the chouriço is crispy. Remove the lemon slices and serve.

House2House Meet the people who give quality furniture a new lease of life.

A

nyone who has owned property in or around Loulé over the last 10 years must have heard of House2House. The two large showrooms you see now however, started from very different ideas just over 15 years ago! Roger and Judith toyed with the idea of moving from the UK In 2002, placing an advert in a paper here in the Algarve, stating their past experience and that they were interested in any business opportunities. Roger had just retired early from being an IT director and Judith was still active in Marketing. They quickly received many replies from a variety of people with opportunities ranging from businesses for sale to positions in other businesses, one of the offers came from the owner of a shop called Zonda, a business selling BBQs here in the Algarve. The owner happened to live only 10 minutes away from them in the UK, so they met and talked about the idea of resurrecting the business. Naturally Roger and Judith wanted to see the space and find a place to live so their newly found friend offered to let them stay at his villa in Vilamoura. After deciding to take over Zonda they moved to Loulé and started their new life. Within a few years of good business with Zonda, Judith had the idea of buying furniture from people selling their houses. Judith says “in the middle of the night it just clicked! I realized that there was nowhere for people to sell their furniture so it usually just went to the gardener or pool man”. Initially renting a small hidden space and only opening once a week for people to view what was new, they quickly realized that this was not nearly enough and so found a small space available and moved

16

the stock in, hiring their first employee, Louise, who has now been with them ever since. In 2005, House2House took flight. Initially running alongside Zonda, the business kept growing and so naturally, they took over the space next door and knocked a hole through the wall. The initial idea of buying house clearance furniture was to sell to villa management companies as most of the furniture was like new but they realised quickly that their customer base was more towards people looking for that particular oddity or “different” style. The more the reputation of great service and great products grew, the more demand for quirky new peices grew and as if it was written in the stars, the opportunity to take over half of the neighbouring building arose, and so they did. Adding more staff and selling more than ever the couple decided in 2014 that it was time to part ways from Zonda and make House2House their only focus. Now, House2House occupies two buildings filled with wonderful furniture and objects from all over the world and Roger and Judith feel now is the time to take steps towards finally retiring after originally trying to 15 years ago! “After a recent passing in the family we realised that we still want to travel the world and experience things we’ve never seen. We love House2House, everyday is a new experience with new wonderful items coming and then going. However we are lucky enough to have a great team that perfectly emulates how we approach the business: not only a great selection of what to buy but time for your clients, getting to know them and what they have bought previously, bringing that next level of service.” Judith explains. The team is

You will find them there from 10am - 5pm every weekday moving things around to make way for new arrivals and of course helping any customers in need. But what about the not so extravagant things? Well, House2House are also very involved in charity, often donating things and raising money for causes here in the Algarve. One great way they have of generating money for Charity is a Charity library, where you can donate a book and check out another, read that then bring it back for just 50 cents per book. The team have raised numerous amounts for Charity in the past and are very keen on doing so in the future so when you next pass by please do see if anything from their Library interests you and if not, put a Euro in the box anyway! ALGARVE

Yes I do!

It is reckoned that between 1,000 and 1,500 couples will choose to tie the knot in the Algarve in the next year, opting for sun, sand and celebrations away from home. Whether they want a beach bonanza or an uber chic party in a lavish villa or luxury hotel, local planners have plenty to offer. Susi Rogol Goodkind reports

Algarve Events / Married Morenos

rilliant blue skies, a fabulous venue, and pretty much a guarantee of sunshine are high on the list of ‘wants’ for those planning their Big Day. Planning up to a year ahead and investigating every option, the Algarve rates way up there on the choice scale. Over the years, top planners like Hitched Portugal, based in Almancil, have seen it all – and arranged it all – for thousands of soon-to-be-weds, from the legalities to the formalites, the food, the flowers, the favours and, of course, the photographers and videographers, the bands, the DJs, the cars and, for one particular bride, the horse on which she arrived at the ceremony. Destination weddings are big business, and the demand is growing every season. Of course, you do get more for your money in the Algarve but, to many, the appeal of doing it their way and creating something truly memorable is an over-riding influencer, whether the guest list is for hundreds, or made up of a small, intimate group of close friends and family. According to the Hitched Portugal team, whose founder has been living in the Algarve for some 14 years and married here in 2008 (yes, their friends still talk about it), careful, structured planning is vital if the event is to be stylish, stress-free and exceed all expectations. “We work

with the best suppliers and services so we can deliver a couple’s personal dream,” she says. Many dreams are set in multi-million-euro jetset villas, privately-owned, designer-decorated and able to offer a backdrop of Hollywood-style glamour. “More and more couples want that look,” says Taelor Antunes of planners Algarve Events. “But finding owners who are happy to rent their homes is not easy.” Hitched Portugal agrees: “There is definitely an increased demand for villa weddings and a security deposit which safeguards against any damages is charged by everyone. The Hitched consultants like to ensure that the interior of a villa is closed off where possible during a wedding to avoid having guests inside the house.” And what about the frocks? Brides and grooms almost always bring their chosen outfits with them. More big-name manufacturers and designers are now producing destination collections that are lighter in weight than their more formal sisters and travel well, and with boho bridalwear trending right now there are plenty of options in every price range. The hot names on the circuit, from the US and Israel, are keen to expose a fair bit of flesh, with daringly deep backs, see-through skirts slashed up to the waist to show off lacy hots pants, and illusion panels that give a barely-there look. Lace motifs on nude netting create tattoo effect for which a suntan is an added bonus.

What about male-order? Many a groom heading for the beach will fancy himself in white or cream, barefooted and dead casual but, according to Torre, the Portuguese menswear supplier, formal chic is scoring serious points. Blue and grey – or a mixture of both – top the popularity polls, but it is the cut that is all-important. Think narrow… short, onebutton cut-away jackets with skinny lapels and drainpipe sleeves, statement waistcoats and tightly-tailored trousers. The look could be hot in more ways than one (especially when the temperature hit the high 20s) but the wedding pix will look mega cool!

This years effects on the property market

T

An update from property expert Paul Greenhalgh, Yellow Homes

he last few weeks we have has seen some rather unfortunate news hitting the headlines. The collapse of Monarch, an ever present airline at Faro airport for many years, will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the Algarve. Hopefully the routes lost by the companies collapse will be replaced quickly and efficiently causing minimal disruption to air passengers using the

airport. Indeed as this article goes to press it is being reported that Faro airport welcomed 3.5 million passengers this summer up 14.1 percent on summer 2016. In addition to travel problems and as reported in the financial press, part of Vilamoura has been put up for sale by the American fund Lone Star. If true this will come as a major disappointment to those promised the massive â‚Ź1 billion development project which would

have represented one of the largest real estate developments in Portugal and provided strong backing for the Portuguese economy and the Algarve region as a whole. But what impact has the year had on the Algarve property market? As we approach the end of 2017, it is around about November time that most long established Algarve based real estate agents can start to get a clearer picture and give an accurate assessment of just how successful the year has been. We are delighted to report that with 2 months of the year still to go, 2017 has already proven to be the best year since the crash of 2008. Not only have we had a large increase in the quantity of properties and plots sold but the values invested are also up on previous years. In the Central Algarve, we are finding that detached properties are still by far the most favoured choice of property type investors are looking for making up just over 70 percent of our sales this year. Investment in apartments and townhouses are roughly equal and with a similar number being sold every year for the last 4 years. One area demonstrating huge improvements is the investment being made into building plots. In previous years existing villas, outside of the touristic resorts, could be bought for less money than it would be if one was to buy a plot and build a new property. For that reason

Design@simplyalgarvemag.com www.simplyalgarvemag.com the sale of plots virtually stopped and the construction industry in the Algarve suffered badly. However, for the last few years these lower value properties have been sold, dramatically closing the price gap on buying a plot and building and making the decision to build a brand new property more appealing than any time in the previous 9 years. In spite of a weak Sterling the British are still leading the way in the

Tales from an expat in Portugal LEARNING NEW WAYS Anthony Martin has discovered that there is more to life as an expat than he ever imagined possible. www.simplyalgarvemag.com

o, if you don’t play golf, what do you do all day?” That’s it – the killer question that we (well this) retired ex-pats dread. For what do I do all day? I know I’m busy-ish but it’s impossible to list anything out and my days certainly lack structure. But then I’m a hillbilly living within a hotch-potch of other hillbillies, a collection of mainly retirees from nine different countries in a rural village where shiny new X90s park alongside rusting 2CVs. This is the place to where I decided to escape to from the big city life and it is so wondrously, deliciously, different from the life before. The life before would see me leaving my home each morning and getting into my car to travel into the center of London. The first mile would take 25 minutes but I was used to it; this was normal… one of the prices to pay for living in a busy, buzzy city where everything is done in double time. Sitting in traffic gave me time to think, to ponder on the ways of the world - I could also finish my slice of toast and marmalade. However, here in the Algarve, in 25 minutes I can travel 40 miles, the downside being that there is no pondering time. No time to ruminate on why there is a car parked on its roof in the middle of an unfinished roundabout. No time to dwell on that wellknown fact in the advertising industry that sex sells (which has never been proven so obvious than when taking a drive on the EN125 westwards from Fonte Boliqueime, where the only ladies who have sold out of oranges are those sitting on white plastic chairs, blowing kisses at passing cars and wearing micro skirts, fishnets and stilettoes). In the before life we were thoroughly spoilt. Flick a light switch and there was light, flush a loo and… well, it worked. For these things to happen here we are in the hands of that unpredictable, uncaring, self-designated deity EDP. There presumably is a reason that they decide to cut the power to my area when the house is full of family. Surely this reason is not just to give me the pleasure of

designating my son-in-law as chief bucket carrier of pool water? Buckets to be placed by the side of each loo and refilled as necessary. With eight people in the house, four loos and the pool two terraces down, my enjoyment is beyond bounds as I hear him, at night, trudging up the stairs balancing two buckets. In the before life, when a tap sprung a leak I would phone a plumber who would inform me that he would be around within the hour. The cost would be £50 for the call-out which included the first half hour, and £25 for each subsequent hour. That was it, if you didn’t have any experience of plumbing there was no other option. In this life however, plumbing matters are totally different. Leaking tap? I phone Rui. He will be around tomorrow morning at ten. Rui is charming, Rui is amusing and Rui is much, much cheaper. The reason he is cheaper is because Rui doesn’t turn up. Yes, he will charm you, yes, he will amuse you, but he has also mastered the art of telling you what you want to hear and then doing the opposite. And Rui, being southern European, will place his palms up, tilt his head to one side, smile and shrug his shoulders. It is then I realise that I like this life and fix the bloody tap myself. The same goes for re-wiring the fuse box, digging trenches for irrigation and regrouting the pool. But then in the last few years I’ve learnt these new skills as have most hillbilly ex-pats. Who of us from the big cities knew anything about sceptic tanks, boreholes, irrigation or three-phase electricity. Of painting freshly picked figs with olive oil and drying them in the sun, or of the right time to gather carobs, or harvest your olives and take them to be pressed. There are these and so many other ‘country matters’ to learn, and enjoy. So, in answer to the question what do I do all day… well I…. nah, a townie wouldn’t understand.

PLACES

T

he old, charming town of Olhão is an up and coming part of the Algarve with growing popularity among tourists and why not? It is a perfect example of a Portuguese town, small avenidas and corner shops everywhere, a market with freshly caught fish and of course, lots of sunshine. Walking around Olhão there are two things you can’t go a minute without seeing, wonderful tile fronted buildings and graffiti. Now, it might not seem a logistical masterpiece but somehow, it works. Making this small town very unique is how they have seemed to embrace street art and make it their own, with the council actually allowing and encouraging street artists such as the famous SEN (Daria Silva) to paint wonderful murals on walls throughout the town. Along with the graffiti are the statues respresenting legends that have been told throughout generations. You can find them dotted around the town alongside plaques explaining the

stories behind them. Whilst walking around you will find many cafes, shops and restaurants for example the Brazilian rodízio just next to the police station, the traditional Portuguese fish restaurante Bom Peixe alongside many others but if you wish to buy some fresh ingredients to cook with, the two market buildings which sit side by side along the water front, offer a huge variety of freshly caught fish and seafood straight from the port, and a colourful range of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables. What about a break from the main town? The clear waters around the islands off Olhão are home to many species of fish and are excellent for snorkelling and diving, alternatively, there are regular ferries to and from the islands and several companies running a variety of boat trips around the islands and along the Ria Formosa. The future of Olhão looks bright as the council has recognized its growing popularity and have plans to rejuvenate the

harbour and coast line having revealed plans earlier this year. With a more modern and spacious look, they hope to start work at the end of the year. In all, OlhĂŁo is a great place to spend a day for anyone who loves to take in Portuguese culture and considering it is just a 10 minute train journey from Faro, you really have no excuse to miss out on a visit.

GBP/EUR drops despite Catalonian crisis, BoE in focus

Keep up to date with our currency expert Chantelle, Client Account Executive at Currencies Direct. ‘After hitting a nine-week high of €1.1427 on the 27th September, the GBP/EUR exchange rate took a tumble in October.’

A

fter hitting a nine-week high of €1.1427 on the 27th September, the GBP/ EUR exchange rate took a tumble in October with a low point of €1.1084 (at the time of this article going to print). On the other hand, EUR/GBP was in the region of £0.8966, with EUR/USD trending around US$1.1844 – right in the middle of the month’s trading range. WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING? A disappointing run of UK PMIs and more signs of Tory infighting combined to keep the pound steadily on the decline in October. Brexit negotiations continued to stall and Theresa May even went as far as telling Parliament that the UK should be prepared for a ‘no deal’ Brexit as a contingency. Bets of whether or not the Bank of England (BoE) will increase interest rates in November have also been fluctuating. The euro has had plenty to contend with as well. Catalonia voted overwhelmingly for independence during its referendum, and Spain imposed direct rule on the region when the Catalan leader refused to back down. The uncertainty surrounding the Eurozone’s second largest economy has kept the euro under pressure.

Currency savings are best enjoyed poolside. Sit back and beat the banks from the comfort of your sun lounger.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LOOK OUT FOR? Catalonia will continue to be a focus for the euro, with any negative developments liable to send the euro lower. The European Central Bank’s 27th October monetary policy meeting was a key event and if tapering to quantitative easing actually takes place then the euro could rise. The US FOMC meets again at the beginning of November. Markets are expecting no changes, but the meeting will be important nonetheless, as it will show whether or not a December rate hike is still likely. The Bank of England (BoE) isn’t due to gather until this month, but speculation on whether or not the central bank will make any adjustment to borrowing costs is likely to be a main driver of GBP movement in the weeks ahead. Starting a business in Portugal: Step by step Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters. ‘Portugal figures at number 25 in the ‘Ease of doing business’ ranking. This report evaluated 190 developed countries based on the ease of starting a company.’

44

A

nyone can start a business in Portugal, irrespective of the nationality or residency, providing you have a good idea and the capital required to make it work. Getting the proper tax advice will help you identify tax breaks that you are eligible for, and it also makes going through the bureaucratic process much simpler. Although many expats do feel that the process is bureaucratic and confusing we will try to help you navigate the system. Here are five things you should know when starting your business in Portugal. BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IN PORTUGAL According to the World Bank’s Doing Business 2017 report, Portugal figures at number 25 in the ‘Ease of doing business’ ranking. This report evaluated 190 developed countries based on the ease of starting a company, funding it and carrying on business. The report maintains that it is quicker and easier to start a business in Portugal as compared to neighboring countries like Spain, but obtaining business credit continues to be a tough task. Step 1: choose a name for your company Any proposed name can be checked against a computer database. If the name has not already been taken that name can be registered via a Validation Certificate (Certificado de Admissibilidade) issued by the National Registry of Companies. This certificate can be issued in a week and it’s normally valid for 3 months. Step 2: the business structure You can structure your business in many ways, these are the most common. You can decide to be the sole proprietorship, so using a Sole Shareholder Private Limited Liability Company (Sociedade Unipessoal por Quotas). If you choose to run the business with other individuals, other options available are Private Limited Liability Company (Sociedade por Quotas) or Public Limited Liability Company (Sociedade Anónima). Step 3: setting up the company With the name and structure chosen, it’s time to sign the deed of incorporation at a notary. This can be done electronically and allows the creation of a company almost immediately. The company will be given a tax number (NIF) and a social security number. The deeds will also include: the identification of the partners/shareholders; Name and type of company (Limitada, etc); Activities of the company; Head office of the company; Share capital of the company; Each shareholders/partners capital share in the company; All assets that form the share capital in kind and cash Step 4: starting the activity Once you sign the deeds, you need a bank account for the company. Only with the IBAN

information, your accountant can register the activity of your new business at the tax office. AFTER REGISTRATION Once the company is registered your accountant will normally take care of the following additional tasks: - Register the directors and employees with the Social Security - Create the Shareholders Meeting Book (Company Minutes) which all pages need to be signed by the shareholders - Make the initial minutes, indicating the salary of the director and other relevant business information Companies have also an obligation to ensure health, hygiene and safety at work for employees. This needs to be certified by an independent company. Don’t forget to take out compulsory employees; accident insurance at a private insurer. This covers all salaried workers and managers. Last but not least, you need to have an official complaints book, which will hopefully never be used by your clients. TAXATION There are different taxes paid by companies in Portugal, here are the most common. Corporate tax is 17 percent for first 15,000€ of profit and 21 percent thereafter. Social Security is 23.75 percent of the gross salaries. Municipal business tax can be up to 1.5 percent and are determined by each municipality, as a matter of interest companies with head office in Tavira are exempt.

Please feel free to visit us for a friendly chat and ask us how we can help you to turn your business idea into reality.

FENG SHUI; YOUR GARDEN TODAY Feng Shui offers the chance to recognise all that Nature provides, and the ability to create order and balance within our environment

F

eng Shui”; a name that echoes to us from the Imperial Courts of China, where this practise evolved over five thousand years ago, and where it has grown and adapted with the changing needs of humanity. We in the West have only just begun to understand the far reaching possibilities of this ancient process during the last two decades, a period which coincides with our increasing attention to the natural world, and to the nature of our relationship with our environment. Feng Shui is a science based on close observation of the earth’s natural cycles, and, especially, on the recognition of a constant flow of the essential energy (élan vital, life-force) which is present in all nature, fuelling all life, and which, if we choose to, we can work with consciously. This science offers the chance to recognise all that Nature provides, and the ability to create order and balance within our environment by enabling the flow of Positive Energy, thus allowing this flow to outweigh the Negative - which will always exist in the eternal balance of Life. It is also a practice applicable on all scales, from large planning projects to the individual garden, which is our special point of interest in this

46

article. A garden designed according to Feng Shui principles will always allow us to create a “comfortable seat” for a home, by consciously shaping all areas to enable the free-flow of positive energy. This is especially important in all places of frequent daily use, e.g. herb gardens, paths, gates, driveways and swimming pool areas. The same principles apply to the positioning of built structures like pergolas, childrens’ play areas, and barbeques, consciously siting them to encourage an unobstructed energy flow. Plants are also placed with the same consideration, and the choice of plants, their height, density, colour, and intrinsic nature are all chosen carefully according to the same basic belief, creating a total, harmonious organism. We all want a constant flow of positive energy between ourselves and the outer world. Respecting the climate, the soil, and the plants that suit your area, you acknowledge your garden as a living entity with its own personality and expression, and, especially, its own powerful unobstructed Life Force. To do this is to open your garden gate to a world of possibilities. credit: www.cape-gardens.com

SPORTS NEWS PORTUGAL AT ALGARVE STADIUM

P

ortugal, who last month qualified for the World Cup Finals in Russia next year, will play the USA at the Algarve Stadium, Faro on Tuesday 14th November. The USA were beaten by Trinidad & Tobago and in the process failed to qualify for the World Cup final stages for the first time since 1986. In 2002 they reached the quarter-finals after beating Portugal 3-2 in the group stage.

Brought to you by Chris Wright. SOCIAL INTEGRATION

T

he Benfica Foundation, a social partner involving all sectors of the community, welcomed Walking Footballers to the Estadío de Luz in Lisbon for a festival of walking football. And what a day it was! As well as a series of games involving teams from Benfica, Olhão, Tavira and Vilamoura the fifty strong group from the Algarve enjoyed wonderful hospitality from the Primeira Liga champions. A tour of the museum and stadium including a meeting with two of the famous eagles, who fly before every home game, was followed by lunch in the corporate dining rooms. The Benfica Foundation has done much good work with those from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially young people, and this progression into working with older age groups is paying dividends.

FUN IN THE SUN

F

un, fitness and friendship are the bywords of Walking Football and over 200 players, officials and friends converged on Vilamoura for the third annual Algarve Walking Football Cup. Scotland was represented by Carnoustie Panmure, Heart of Midlothian, Tullibody and Tweedvale whilst from south of the border Derby County, Mansfield, Canterbury, Chesterton (Staffs), Stamerton (Lincs) and West Lancashire completed the overseas contingent. East Algarve WF entered teams from Olhão and Tavira with BrownsWF completing an impressive line-up. The final between BrownsWF and Olhão ‘A’ lived up to its billing with BrownsWF taking a first-half lead from the penalty spot. Both keepers, Alan Brown (BrownsWF) and Peter Diprose (Olhão) made vital saves and with the clock running down it looked as if the competition hosts would be lifting the trophy for the first time. But the champions snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a brace of goals from Brian Kilcline and Andy Smith in the final two minutes. Derby County took third place with Olhão ‘B’ in fourth. www. walkingfootballalgarve.com

PORTIMONENSE STRUGGLE

he newcomers to the Primeira Liga are finding it tough in the top flight but the standard of football augers well for better times ahead. A tough game away at non-league Moura AC, in the 3rd round of the Portugal Cup, ended goal less after extra-time with the Portimão team winning the penalty shootout 7-6. The next league game at the Municipal Stadium is scheduled for the weekend of 25th/26th November against fellow strugglers CD Tondela.

PRIMEIRA LIGA SCALP FOR FARENSE

N

on-league SC Farense had a shock 1-0 victory over Estoril Praia in the 3rd round of the Portugal Cup. Estoril, of the Primeira Liga, were favourites but were reduced to ten men midway through the first-half. In the second period former Benfica and Portugal international Jorge Ribeiro stepped up to hammer home the winning goal from the penalty spot to send the Faro side through to the last thirty-two. Benfica attracted a crowd of 8,116 to the Algarve Stadium where the cup holders and league champions had a lucky escape with a 1-0 win over SC Olhanense thanks to a Gabriel Barbosa after just four minutes. If Leleco had put the ball into the net, when teed up by Sporting Lisbon loanee Jefferson Encada, just after the interval it could have been a different story. A formidable local derby between archrivals Farense and Olhanense, there is just eight kilometres between the two grounds, is scheduled to take place at the São Luís Stadium, (behind Faro Hospital) on the 12th November.
