Dear Sally Thank you for your question regarding your pelargoniums and I hope I can be of assistance. There are numerous diseases that can affect pelargoniums, but a few are more common than others. So I will give you a few options and treatments which hopefully will cure or help with your problem. From your description of the yellowing and mottling of the leaves my first thought was Pelargonium virus which is probably the worst case scenario as there is no chemical control available, but good hygiene can prevent the spread. Many viruses can be spread on knives or when handling. Disinfect knives and secateurs between each cut when propagating, by flaming or washing in a strong detergent solution. Destroy and avoid propagating from plants showing virus-like symptoms and wash your hands after touching any suspect plants. Endeavour to buy virus-free plants. Another option is red spider mite and this can be identified and dealt with very easily. To identify the culprits you will need to inspect the underside of the leaves and with a good eye or a hand lens you should be able to see the mites and their spherical eggs. To control this you can spray the plants with befenthrin, vegetable oils or fatty acids, although it will require several applications to break the red spider mite’s life cycle. My last thought, and which probably is the cause, is just potassium deficiency which can be dealt with easily by applying sulphate of potash in spring and autumn.

Sarah Gonçalves Algarve Manta Properties Dear East Algarve Magazine I wonder if you can provide some clear information on what to do in the current swine flu or gripe situation. Numbers of cases are expected to rise I believe in the Autumn but I have been told that the emergency number supplied doesn’t give an option to speak to someone in English. Any advice would be useful as I have two under 5’s. My Portuguese is very basic and I would like to be prepared. Many thanks Cathy, Moncarapacho

I hope this helps with your problem and I would suggest you try the latter 2 options first because the pelargonium virus is a more terminal problem and would require you to renew your plants Dear East Algarve Magazine, Once again, I enjoyed the last issue, the consistant quality of articles and information never disapoints. We found the beaches article particularly useful as we have not lived here very long and needed some advice on where we could take friends with young children and enjoy the beach in safety. Thank you for providing a much needed source of information. Debbie from Sao Bras. Dear East Algarve Magazine, I just want to transmit my satisfaction with the Bowen Technique featured in your August issue. I have suffered for a long time with my back and neck and before I got too busy with work this Summer, following up on a recommendation I went to see Gareth Bullock. I was a little unsure it would work as the movements are very gentle and I was so relaxed I nearly fell asleep. I had just two treatments and feel fantastic, the pain in my neck disappeared and my back is better. I will see how I feel in September and maybe go for a top up treatment. So to anyone who is suffering, ‘Don’t suffer any more, it is well worth it’.

If we can all do a little bit in our areas and get together supporting each other to raise money by holding events of any kind to have abandoned animals sterilised we can make a difference. This month we introduce Stephen Freeman, a professional painter and decorator living on São Brás Stephen Freeman has been a professional painter and decorator for just over 22 years. He has lived in the Algarve for 3 years now, with his wife and two young children. Ste phen covers the whole of the Al garve region, painting interiors and exteriors. Last year he took on his biggest project so far, painting the exteriors of 22 town houses in Alvor, but is also very flexible in the work he takes on. One question he is of ten asked is do you work in the hot test part of the year? His answer is yes, at least until the bills stop com ing and the kids stop growing! We asked Stephen for some paint ing advice and here’s what he said. From a professional painter’s point of view, exterior painting is the most important home maintenance proj ect that can be done. Paint can sometimes be the only protection from the weather and water pen etration. Often the difference be tween a good exterior paint job and a bad one comes down to trying to save money on materials or labour (hiring a professional). Spending a little more money can save you many thousands later. It’s amazing that this thin film of prim er and paint lasts as long as it does. Exterior house paint must stand up to the most extreme conditions that man and nature can dish out. Added to this, all buildings, includ ing your home, are constantly mov ing around and breathing.Following the best exterior house painting tips and using the best quality materi als can add years to the life of your Usinghome. top quality painting products, knowledge and practical experience will result in lower maintenance and less repairs in the future. And it gets better! You may find that there will be an increase in the value of your home, a win – win situation. Getting your home painted can be frustrating enough without dealing with issues of poor quality. If done correctly a quality exterior paint job can maintain its beauty and durabil ity for many years to come and inte riors even longer. James Polley speaks to the founder of restaurant Luis dos Frangos

L uis Manuel Correia better known as ‘Chicken Luis’ was born in Silves in Algarve. He moved at an early age to France, and worked as a cook for 7 years, grilling meat and chicken. In 1976, he returned from France to São Brás de Alportel, and earned a living delivering building materials. The experience that he gained cook ing in France insprired him to set up a similar venture in Portugal. In 1978, he rented a small premises, and set about making a BBQ from an 200 gallon oil drum and grilling the chickens outside the restaurant on the pavement. In early 1979, Luis dos Frangos was born. Luis told us how he grilled day in, day out, for 17 years. Passing friends used to buy him drinks which were lined up on a bench to keep him going! His wife, Rosa Maria Neves D.Correia, worked in the restaurant with only 1 helper in the whole 17 years. All the chickens that were cooked in those 17 years were turned by hand, now of course, they are turned by ro tisserie. Luis remembers how he was sold an electric grill by a salesman after being told how much quicker it would be. However, all of his clients told him to go back to the traditional ‘Carvão’ (charcoal) as the taste was so much better. He listened and did just that, and still uses charcoal to day, which is the secret of the authen tic flavour. Valerio, is now their ‘Chef’ and can be seen from the pave ment cooking his many hundreds of chickens daily. Demand is high and the 120 seater restaurant turns over 3 times on a Sunday lunch! In 1981, Luis moved to the premises, which is the current location of Luis dos Frangos. He reminisced about how he had the permission to build 2 stories, but at that time he was unable to afford the whole project. He said he spent a fortune on cor rugated iron sheets and used them as a flat roof, in order to keep the frequent leaks in the restaurant at bay. As time went on, he was able to complete the whole 2 floors with help from friends and now has apart ments above the restaurant which family members live in. To this day, each potato is peeled by hand, and always will be, he explained. It is essential to keep traditions and flavours as they are, in order to uphold the restaurant’s reputation. Luis dos Frangos is a family run business with many members of the family involved in all aspects of the day to day running of the business, with Senhor Luis still very hands on and Rosa, still doing all the shopping for the Lookingrestaurant.tothefuture, Luis’s plans are to extend the restaurant into the premises next door. This gains extra storage and approximately another 20 seats in the restaurant. There will also be disabled toilets. These works will be completed by the end of Sep tember. In the renovations, the 30 year old floor also stands to gain a Provingfacelift. his reputation, Luis still has clients from 30 years ago, some of which were eating in the restaurant as the interview was conducted.

A ugust 7th, 2009 saw one of the biggest fires in the history of São Brás. A phone call was re ceived at 3:05pm, reporting a forest fire. Initially, 73 firefighters from the Algarve region rushed to the scene, however it quickly became apparent that reinforcements were required. Within hours, help came from Lisbon (2 stations), Beja, Evora and Santarém. At the height of the fire there were up to 350 firefighters try ing to control the raging inferno. Three helicopters were used to collect water from pools and baragems in the area, plus two Canada Air planes based in Spain were draughted in, and collected sea water from the coast at Olhão. Also called to the scene were an estimated 65-75 fire engines and two bulldozers. An emergency hospital was set up in Porto Carvalhoso on a football pitch. The fire spread from it’s origin, Barranco da Figueira through Alcaria Fria, Casas Novas, Umbria, Corte das Noivas and finally Alcorvel.

The East Algarve Magazine would like to thank all fire fighters involved on behalf of all our readers.

The São Brás Bombeiros reported that about 1200 hect ares of land were burnt, a distance of 10-15km (as the crow flies). The only reported damage has been a few farmers’ out-buildings, quite remarkable!

The São Brás Bombeiros advise readers to clear an area of 50m around your home of large trees. Newly planted trees should be placed 4-5 meters apart to prevent fire spreading.

The leader of the choir had moved away and so they didn’t have anyone to direct them. They missed their singing and wanted to continue together, so one of them - knowing that her art teacher also sang in a choir - asked her if she knew anyone who could help them. The art teach er was renowned local artist Jane Page and she sings in the ‘Coro dos Amigos do Museu’ in Sao Bras. Jane had an idea that I might be up for the challenge as I already helped with the vocal warm up at her choir and had shown myself to be quite happy bossing people about, so she put us in touch with each other. The title of this article may sound like rather a grandiose claim, but as far as I can see, the Portuguese haven’t yet discovered Barbershop. I moved over here in 2006 and missing my barbershop chorus (Amersham A Cappella) and quartet fix I looked around to find the nearest chorus (Barbershoppers are not collectively known as ‘choirs’ they are called ‘Choruses’) to join. It appeared there was no such animal, so I joined the ‘Coro dos Amigos.’ I met the ex-Gospel ladies one week in late 2007. I asked them what parts they sang and they all said ‘Sopra no’! However, after voice testing it transpired that actually, by a miracle, we had the full quartet of voices we needed, and so ‘Bella A Cappella’ was Barbershopborn. singing originated in the USA when men waiting in line for a haircut would sing together, making harmony by ear rather than reading sheet music. Since those days it has grown into a huge and widespread hobby reaching a very high standard.

The old image of four men in straw boaters and waistcoats is way out of date. Now there are also ladies’ and youth choruses, many of whom compete internationally each year to win the coveted ‘Gold Medal’. Barbershop singing is a style of mu sic normally sung by either women or men. Choruses tend to be single sex not mixed as in choirs. The chords in the music are close together so do not require the bass and soprano to be so far apart in range. Due to its male origins, we tradition ally name the voice parts in women’s barbershop the same as the men, so instead of ‘Soprano’, the highest voice is ‘Tenor’, then the ‘Lead’ sings the melody line, the ‘Baritone’ sings the next lowest part and the ‘Bass’ sings the bottom notes. The organisation in the UK for ladies’ barbershop is LABBS (The Ladies’ Association of British Barbershop Singers). You can look them up on the internet under www.labbs.org.uk the men’s organisation (BABS – Brit ish Association of Barbershop Sing ers) can be found at www.singbar bershop.com I hope one day that barbershop will catch on here and there will be a ‘PABS’. In the mean time, Bella A Cappella is looking to swell its ranks. We are a very friendly group who love to have fun. We currently have 12 to 14 ladies and have plenty more room for new members. The only cri teria for joining is that you must be able to sing reasonably in tune and speak and understand English as the music is all in English. Although it’s helpful, you don’t have to be able to read music as we have learning cd’s for all of our songs with the indi vidual parts on them. We meet every Tuesday evening in Moncarapacho at 6.30pm, except for a short break in the Summer between July and September. Our Autumn rehearsals will start on 8th September and we would be very pleased to see new faces. Please contact Sylvy on 914 848 108 or Sylvy.wilks@gmail.comemail:

Reflexology is a non invasive treatment on your feet and hands that encourages self healing, relaxation, balance and well being. See what you think of the interview, and, if you feel this could be for you, call Gill and organise a Home treat ment. What is your name? Gill Bray. What do you practice? Reflexology. In one sentence, what is Reflexol ogy? Reflexology works by applying pressure on specific reflex points on the feet/hands, as each of the 7,200 plus reflex points correspond to a part of the body, thereby stimulat ing these reflexes and bringing the body back into balance to create a state of well being. How long have you lived here? 2 Years. What 5 things does Reflexology treat well? 1. Expels body toxins 2. Releases stress and tension 3. Preventative body maintenance 4. Aids recovery from injury 5. Eases pain and discomfort How long was the training for Reflexology? 3 Years. What is your health tip of the day? Eat sensibly. What’s the last thing you ate? A chicken sandwich. What’s around the corner? The supermarket, no, an exciting future! Do you practice what you preach? Yes. Which celebrity would you like to treat? Patrick Swayze. Where did you last go on holiday? The UK. Rugby or football? Definitely rugby! Do you order from the cosmos or amazon.co.uk? Amazon. What’s the best result you have had from one of your treatments? Constipation relief to a lady who had been suffering for 3 weeks. Does it hurt? Not the constipation, I’m sure that did, but reflexology? No, and generally even people who have ticklish feet find the treatment pleasurable. Where can I have a treatment with you? I do home visits anywhere in the Central/Eastern Algarve. I also have treatments rooms in Quinta Fonte do Bispo, Albufeira and Carvoeira. What is your telephone number? TLM.916 582 689. A reflexology treatment with Gill would last up to one hour and would cost €35.00 to €40.00 including a full consultation. Try it, reflexology really is a wonderful treatment to ex perience. If you have had any good or bad experiences with treatments like this, do write in and share your Iviews.hope you like this article and make sure you get a copy of next months issue where I will be meeting with a Spiritual Healer.

This month our Health expert Gareth Bullock had great pleasure in meeting and interviewing Gill Bray who practices Reflexology across the Algarve.

Breakfast: Always a cup of coffee and a biscuit Mid morning: Drink – juice, coffee or pop Lunch: Small bap with either ham and cheese, chicken and salad or tuna mayonnaise, Sometimes just a drink Mid Afternoon: Drink Evening Meal: Pork steaks/ Fish or chicken, Veg etables, Small portion of boiled po tato or rice, Fruit or occasionally icecream Supper: A biscuit In order to achieve a good result the calories need to increase, particular ly in the morning, in order to stimu late an increase in metabolic rate. It is also far better to include the things you enjoy in your everyday diet rath er than one massive binge. Although something sweet is eaten after eve ning meal fruit never quite makes the grade if you love chocolate. This type of pattern leads to the diet/ binge syndrome. Restricting calories too much so reducing metabolic rate, then when the binge cycle starts the weight goes on twice as fast.

•If you have a bad spell and binge, don’t say to yourself ‘I’ve ruined it now I might as well carry on’. Just get back to the normal eating pattern and you will find it has little effect on your weight.

•Eat at a steady pace so that your brain has time to recognise that your stomach is full.

GENERAL RULES FOR A HEALTHY DIET

This month Margaret Hooley tells us how to change an eating pattern, and how this can be done without too much pain.

São Brás de Alportel is a mix of old and new, with typical, low white Algarvean houses amongst the slightly dusty, grander merchant houses whose opulence harks back to São Brás de Alportel’s prosperity, in the years when the cork industry was booming. The ring of hills around the town look out on the sea and the mountains. The friendly local population of about 11 thousand enjoys a tranquil, unhurried lifestyle. Such are the simple charms of São Brás de Alportel, a typical Al garve town. The area near the church is the older part of town. It is very pretty and the view from outside the church of the surrounding countryside is lovely. There are the Gardens of Verbena, which, although a bit run down, still show the potential of the grand mu sic stand and the garden with a Ro man theme overlooking the open air swimming pool. The current church was rebuilt after 1755 on the site of, probably, a 15th century church and extended somewhat in the 19th cen tury. There are also some interesting details in this small area, a statue of an old man sitting on a bench and num bered tiles and letters of the alphabet set into the cobbles leading through one of the streets. The high and low points of the town’s changing fortunes are written in the stones of its streets and squares; in the architectural de tails of the once grand houses, the ba roque mortar decoration of the Passo da Paixão near the Episcopal Palace and the pretty flower pots in the win dows add colour and interest to their Asstory.you move further away from the church the streets widen and modern apartments take the place of the older white washed houses. There are lots of shops and supermarkets, banks, restaurants, cafes - everything you need in fact! A little further away again and streets of new villas and low rise apartments edge the town. The location of São Brás is ideal. Faro, Olhão, Estoi. Moncarapacho, Tavira, Loulé are all within 20 minutes drive. You are also ideally positioned for walking in the Barrocal region. This region consists of the plains, which lie between the Atlantic Ocean and the hills to the north. It is a barren region mainly populated by traditional farm ers living in their small, isolated ham lets. Some of the best walks in the Al São Brás Lido Main Church

São Brás de Alportel Pousada was the first Pousada to be built in the Algarve, in 1942, and the second in Portugal. It is perfect place to savour the area, avoiding the more crowded coastal resorts. As for gastronomy the restau rant has many specialty dishes which you can enjoy together with excellent Portuguese wines. There are a couple of Festivals not to be missed. The first is at Easter, the “Festa das Tochas Floridas” —Flow er Torches Festival—beginning with 10:30 Easter Mass at Igreja de Matriz. After church, the local people will pro cess through flower carpeted streets, holding up “torches” and chanting. “The leader cries ‘Christ is risen’ and the procession responds with three cries of “Alleluia!” Similar festivals were celebrated in many Algarvian towns in the 18th and 19th centuries” but only the São Brás Torch Flower Festival re mains—maybe because this town has an important secular event to remem ber, for which flower torches serve es pecially Accordingwell.to local history, it was up this road that the marauding seamen of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh proceeded after sacking Faro in 1596 - having already sacked Cadiz in Spain. Bent on more pillage in the hill towns, it was the men of São Brás, armed only with clubs and branches, who defended the town and sent the invaders back to their ships. The São Brás men returned home with their clubs and branches decorated with flowers to celebrate their victory.”

The route starts in the Saõ Brás Museum. A short distance up the hill from the pretty village of Alportel, on the right hand side, is the entrance to Fonte Férrea picnic area. It is a beautiful val ley of pines, eucalpytus and oleanders and a series of pools of crystal clear spring water. It is worth continuing the drive for the views, as you wind around the hillsides of cork and pine trees you will end up in the hamlet of Cova da Muda.

HISTORY São Brás de Alportel, was a settlement in Roman times and later inhabited by the Moors. It was the birthplace of Moorish poet Ibne Ammar in the 12th century, São Brás de Alportel was by the 16th century a small village with a Hermitage. From the 17th century on wards the Episcopal Palace was the summer residence used as a place of refuge from the summer heat for the bishops of the Algarve. In the 19th century it became the crossroads of the routes linking Loulé to Tavira and Faro to Almodôver. At the beginning of the 20th century São Brás de Al portel was the biggest cork producing centre in Portugal and the world. Its increasing population and economic importance led to the creation of the municipality in 1914. São Brás is now more reliant on tourism and crafts.

FORMER EPISCOPAL PALACE Built in the 17th/18th centuries for the bishops of the Algarve as a place of refuge from the summer heat, this building underwent several modifica tions in the 19th and 20th centuries which have altered its structure. What remains of the original palace today is part of the main building and, almost opposite it, a baroque vaulted fountain with eight spouts.

info@eastalgarvemag.comPage 18 Focus on...Sã o Brá s with a strong sense of pride from par ticipants and their families, watching from the sidelines, is as you would expect, very Algarvian. The second is the Festival of the Mountains (Feira da Serra), which takes place each year at the end of July, with food and drink, music, dancing and displays of local crafts and horsemanship. This gets bigger and better every year and is very well supported by locals. There are a couple of markets to visit; the flea market on the 3rd Sunday of the month and a local weekly market in the street around the Mercado each Saturday.

ANTÓNIO BENTES CULTURAL CENTRE (SÃO BRÁS MUSUEM) Towards the end of the 19th century a wealthy cork merchant built an im pressive mansion in S. Brás de Alpor tel. The mansion is a good example of bourgeois architecture at the end of the 19th century. The architectural style and the decorative elements demonstrate exotic elements from foreign cultures, with its interior doors, and beautifully carved wood ceilings.

MAIN CHURCH Built on the site of a church that proba bly dates back to the 15th century, the current structure was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. It was extended considerably in the 19th century. The interior is rather lacking in architec tural interest. The chapel of Senhor dos Passos contains gilded carvings in the taste of the second half of the 18th century and there are paintings from the 17th century depicting saints. Among the statues to be seen, those of the arcanjo São Miguel (Archangel Michael), São Libório (St. Liborius) and Santa Eufemia (St. Euphemia), dating from the 18th century are worth men tioning. The statues in the sacristy are from the same period. In the baptis tery there is a neoclassical retable in marble. The churchyard is a good vantage point to admire the surround ing countryside and the sea.

Following his death his granddaughter Lucília Dias Sancho, moved into the house with her husband, António Bentes. When António Bentes died, the building was donated to the Santa Casa da Mi sericórdia of São Brás de Alportel. In addition to an exhibition of the typi cal Algarvean costume worn in the 19th/20th centuries, there is also a collection of popular religious sculp ture. The old farm buildings contain traditional vehicles once used in the Algarve, ranging from carriages and buggies that were used by the rich as transport, to mule carts and ox drawn wagons, used by farmers and farm labourers. The museum also includes an exhibition of agricultural imple ments and tack and an area dedicat ed to cork and the cork industry. This is well worth a visit and guided tours are available. A wide range of cultural activities are regularly held in the out buildings. This bring this magnificent building to life, and offers the oppor tunity to enjoy the surroundings. More details from www.museu-sbras.com.

São Brás certainly seems to have sur vived it’s changing fortunes and has recovered from the loss of its cork industry, to become an increasingly popular place to live. With its lovely countryside position at the foot of the hills and proximity to Faro it is easy to see why.

Andrew Derrick is the Financial Director of Alta Rede Lda, an internet services company based in Castro Marim.

How the web was woven. Andrew Derrick from Altarede Lda tells us how, and who helped create the Web. Many people think that the Internet and the World Wide Web are the same thing, but they are not! The internet is a system of computer networks physically linked by copper wires, fibre optics, cables and other connections, and it has been around for a lot longer than the World Wide Web. Unlike the Internet’s ‘physical’ network of computers and cables, the Web is a ‘virtual’ space of information. You can’t see it or touch it. The Web only works because the Internet allows computers on the network to communicate with each other. So without the Internet, the Web couldn’t exist. The World Wide Web was just one of many ways of passing information over the internet – others included emails and bulletin boards. Tim Berners Lee developed The Web at the end of the 1980 ́s while working for CERN in Switzerland. He wanted a way for different information on computers to be linked and stored –rather as the human brain stores and links information. He came up with the idea of “hypertext” that allows you to read different texts and web pages which are linked. It let people use a mouse to click on a link, which would take them to the next chunk of information. You have used these links every time you have clicked on a hyperlink on a web page which has taken you to another page on the Web! Tim was very keen to share his new technology with as many people as possible – The Web is like the telephone; if there is only one person using it, it is not much use! He sent out the software and information to every scientist he knew who was involved in the development of the internet and got them to use his Web system. The address of the first ever website was “info.cern.ch” and was introduced in February 1991. It is astonishing to think that the World Wide Web was created only 18 years Anotherago! problem for the scientists was that every computer that’s directly connected to the Internet had to have its own unique address made up of a 32-digit number. That is because computers deal in numbers not letters. Because human beings, unlike computers, find it hard to remember long sequences of numbers, the Domain Name System was developed, which effectively converted numbers into memorable addresses such as “Google.com” or “Sapo.pt”. So now, computers could have memorable Internet addresses made up of words like ‘.com’ and ‘.gov’, which are much easier to Andremember.sothe Web was born! In its short life, it has revolutionized ours! Even now, our children cannot conceive of life before The Web existed! The rest, as they say, is history.

Are you making the most of your holiday rental property? Property expert Robert Bijker highlights the benifits of good advertising. As a homeowner interested in optimizing your rental income, you should take time to analyse if you are still on track to achieve your goal. As a villa manager, I prefer to do this during September of each year. This gives me ample time to make adjustments if and when needed, to implement them before October and be ready for next year. It may be difficult for a homeowner to tell the difference between doing fine and doing great as you don’t have the insight we have. Some owners are reluctant to set an annual budget for the marketing of their home even though it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. A budget of Euro 500 to 650 will be more than enough. Not investing in the marketing of your home is a bit odd. Having spent a lot of money to buy your place in the sun, then fitting it out with many desirable features and furnishing it to a very high standard in keeping with its luxury surroundings, you basically have gone out of your way to make your property attractive to renters. Except you are not telling them!

It is best to address this issue as soon a possible because a week of lost rental income will be lost forever, unlike the inventory in a bookstore which you can always sell or discount the very next day. Multichannel marketing is a combination of traditional means of advertising in daily newspapers and holiday magazines, internet marketing, such as having your own website and holiday rental portals, and making use of the network of contacts of a well established villa management agency. Depending on the type of property you have, some channels work better than others.

PHYSICAL GOLD Bars and Coins Demand for Gold coins and bars has pushed coin premiums to high levels. On a weight-for-weight basis, premiums on bars are generally lower than for coins, and this makes bars the more attractive proposition for Bullioninvestors.coins are legal tender in the country of issue. The market value of bullion coins is determined by the value of their fine gold content, plus a premium that varies between dealers. Don’t confuse bullion coins with commemorative or numismatic (collectors’) coins, whose value depends on their rarity, design and finish rather than just their fine gold Smallcontent.gold bars can be bought in a variety of sizes and weights up to 1kg. Like bullion coins, they contain a minimum 99.5pc gold. Bars are likely to carry less of a premium than coins (www.goldbarsworldwide.com has detailed descriptions of types and producers).

Jewellery Buying gold jewellery for investment purposes is common in the Middle East and much of Asia. Jewellery used primarily for investment purposes is usually fairly plain and of high caratage (21-24 carat). Allocated gold account Another way to own bars or coins. A vault holds gold on your behalf, with specific bars belonging to you – your bars or coins are numbered and identified by hallmark, weight and fineness. Effectively like keeping

Other unit and investment trusts Some funds specialise in goldrelated assets; the most famous is BlackRock’s Gold & General. They have wide discretion over the underlying assets they buy so correlation to the gold price is variable.

NON-PHYSICAL GOLD Unallocated gold account As with allocated accounts, you own a set quantity of gold stored at a custodian’s vault. The difference is that you don’t own specific bars – it is like the difference between having cash in a bank’s safety deposit box and having money in a bank account. The custodian can lend “your” gold so you do not normally pay for storage or insurance. You can ask for physical delivery if you wish. Stocks and Shares

Eastalgarve_Issue9.indd 27 31/8/09 17:33:10

A lot of mining companies produce gold as a byproduct of their main mining ventures, but there are a select few that mine for gold as a main venture. Buying shares is fairly simple, even if you don’t have a broker, your bank may have a department that can purchase them for you. In a bull market, gold stock prices are leveraged to the spot price of gold by as much as 300% due to the fact that shares are usually valued by the quantity of gold in the ground – proven resources - that they own. Exchange-traded funds These are securities traded on the stock market whose price closely reflects that of physical gold. You buy and sell them just as you would a share. There is concern in some areas that these funds do not carry physical Gold as they purport to do; they may hold paper equivalents which are also known as derivatives or paper gold. The main problem would be if the US$ (the reserve currency of the world) were to collapse, these derivatives could not deliver physical gold and would have to be paid out in rapidly depreciating fiat dollars – just the event that gold is insuring you against. Find an ETF that is reglarly audited by a reputable company to verify that it holds the Gold reported in its accounts.

SCAMMING IS ENDEMIC IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE: Scammers make a living by exploiting trust. They lure us with candy and promises; they compel us with the intimidation of authority. A televangelist dangles the celestial carrot of everlasting life (and the threat of the less appealing option) as he collects donations from his destitute flock. Evil imams promise a green and orgiastic paradise to youthful suicide bombers. (Word of advice: Never fall for any deal that requires your death as a prerequisite to benefits. That includes life insurance.) A stock analyst issues a “buy” recommendation for a company he trashes in private, and we take the bait. (“Suckers!,” he gloats. “They’ll boost the share price so I can bail my best clients out of this dog before it collapses). Assorted hucksters know that fear and greed are the world’s biggest motivators, and they play them to the hilt. And politicians will always be politicians. The scammers are in the business of selling us hope, it turns out to be a sham. They’ve lied to us; that’s their crime. We’ve bought the lie; that’s our folly. We trusted them, and we were hoodwinked. If you find yourself scammed once again, accept your misfortune cheerfully and don’t reproach yourself for being gullible. Because in my heart of hearts, I believe it’s better to believe than to live in perpetual suspicion. Bayan

H eat pumps are usually associated with pool heating in the Algarve, but nowadays there is growing demand to use them for domestic hot water, conventional radiators and underfloor heating.

To dispel any final doubts, Penguin supplied the following table, showing the noise levels of Mitsubishi’s Ecodan heat pump, as well as interior and exterior air-con units, in relation to other everyday sounds

Environment Eastalgarve_Issue9.indd 29 31/8/09 17:33:32

The twin pressures of environmental awareness and a tight economy are stimulating use of low-carbon technology, particularly heat pumps, for heating domestic homes. At a recent exhibition at the NEC in England, Mitsubishi Electric reported a huge surge in interest for their Heat pumps bring outstanding energy savings – but aren’t they noisy? Specialists Penguin silence the doubts...

The Ecodan air source heat pump system consists of an external box fitted to your outside wall, much like an air-con unit Indeed its principle of operation is much the same as air conditioning or refrigerationbut switched in reverse. In this way it extracts low-grade heat from the outdoor ambient air and concentrates or ‘upgrades’ it to supply a home with domestic hot water and heating. So effective is this process that its CoP rating (Coefficient of Performance) is between 3-4, in other words for every 1kW of electricity fed into the system, you will get at least 3kW of heating energy. A heat pump therefore operates at a significantly lower cost than a gas bolier. Remarkably, the system can work all year-round even if the outdoor temperature should drop to minus 15ºC – anyway an impossibility in the Algarve’s climate. Heat pumps - or more correctly ‘heat exchangers’ - run on electricity and emit absolutely no exhausts that pollute the air. For most homes they can help reduce running costs and offer reliable, sustainable heating and hot water all year-round. But aren’t they noisy? Some people express concern that such systems may present a nuisance noise, especially around the calm of a swimming pool. David Thirlwell, Chief Engineer at Penguin, puts it into perspective: “Of course any machine with a fan makes a sound, but no more than most exterior aircon units, which most people find perfectly acceptable. For pool areas, solar heating offers a totally silent solution, although a heat pump is more effective and much simpler to install. But whether for domestic water or pool heating, most homes will have an area where a heat pump can be located without being in any way obtrusive ”

FUSETA Hydrangea macrophylla is a species of Hydrangea native to Japan. Common names include Bigleaf Hydrangea, French Hydrangea, Lacecap Hydrangea, Mophead Hydrangea, Penny Mac and Hortensia. It is widely cultivated in many parts of the world in many climates. This plant has a strong conection to my gardening history as it has always been the plant I associated with my interest in gardening and was my nan’s favourite who was a big influence in my love of gardening. It is a plant that we can readily grow in the Algarve, and one we should certainly find space for in our garden, or even in a pot, if you are short of space.

Having been introduced to the Azores Islands of Portugal, they are now very common there, particularly on Faial Island, which is known as the “blue island” due to the vast number of hydrangeas present on the island, and on Flores Island. There are two flower arrangements in hydrangeas. Mophead flowers are large round flowerheads resembling pom-poms or, as the name implies, the head of a mop. In contrast, lacecap flowers bear round, flat flowerheads with a center core of subdued, fertile flowers surrounded by outer rings of showy, sterile Hydrangeaflowers flowers are produced from early spring to late autumn; they grow in flowerheads (corymbs or panicles) at the ends of the stems. In many species, the flowerheads contain two types of flowers, small fertile flowers in the middle of the flowerhead, and large, sterile bractlike flowers in a ring around the edge of each flowerhead. Other species have all the flowers fertile and of the same size. In most species the flowers are white, but in some species (notably H. macrophylla), can be blue, red, pink, light purple, or dark purple. In these species the exact colour often mirrors the pH of the soil; acidic soils produce blue flowers, neutral soils produce very pale cream petals, and alkaline soils results in pink or purple. This is the caused by a color change of the flower pigments

MopheadsPRUNING Dead flowerheads of mophead hydrangeas can be removed after flowering, but it is better to leave them on the plant over winter as they will provide some frost protection for the rather tender growth buds below them. Instead, remove the dead flowerheads in early spring, cutting back to the first strong, healthy pair of buds lower down the stem. If there is any frost damage in spring, prune back damaged shoots to just above the first undamaged pair of buds on live, healthy wood. Also remove any weak, straggly stems. Lacecaps are hardier and need less pruning, though faded flowerheads

Flowering problems

Lacecaps

A common problem for gardeners is blue-flowered plants turning pink. The trace element aluminium is responsible for the blue colour and while this is available to plants in acid soils, it is not in neutral or alkaline areas. Some cultivars will change from pink to blue using a proprietary hydrangea-bluing preparation, but only if you have no chalk or lime in your soil. If you have slightly alkaline soil, you can boost the pink colour by applying ground limestone or chalk at 75-100g per sq m (2oz per sq yd) during winter. White-flowered cultivars remain white whatever you Thedo. main cause of non-flowering, especially in mophead hydrangeas, is pruning too hard. In early spring simply cut off old flowerheads to the first pair of fat buds. HydrangeasPests are prone to attack by several pests, most commonly red spider mite, capsid bug, aphids and vine weevil. Hydrangea scale and glasshouse red spider mite may also be an occasional problem.

Other hydrangeas H. paniculata can be left unpruned or cut back annually in late winter to a low framework to obtain larger, but fewer, panicles of flowers. The climbing hydrangea (H. anomala subsp. petiolaris) should have overlong shoots cut back immediately after flowering. I hope you find this article something that might entice you into using Hydrangeas in your garden whatever the size as they truly are a plant that can add structure and beauty to your garden, and now with the chance of purchasing in some garden centres in Portugal. COUNTR in the presence of aluminium ions which can be taken up into hyperaccumulating plants. Hydrangeas are actually quite specific in there cultural requirements and need some care if they are to give of their best Hydrangeas are popular garden plants, be they traditional mophead cultivars (hortensias) (Above left), dainty lacecaps, selections of H. serrata (Above right) or other species. All thrive in moist, well-drained, fertile soil in partial shade. Hot, dry conditions encourage problems such as powdery mildew and red spider mite, while wet, humid environments promote botrytis on foliage, as well as root and stem rots. Shallow chalky soils or light, acid sandy soils may cause yellowing leaves. To alleviate this, apply Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) as a foliar spray at a rate of 200g per 11-litres (7oz per gallon).

Manager Jorge Costa has strengthened his team with Nigerian Greg Nwokolo, signed a two year contract, whilst the defence has been bolstered by the addition of 25 year old Éder Baiano from FC Guarani, Brazil on a one year deal. The manager is casting his eye over Oscar Guerrero, a 24 year old Colombian attacking midfield player, currently with Desportivo Armenio, Argentina. Olhanense had four players represent Portugal in the 21 victory over N.Ireland in an Under 21 international recently. New coach Oceano Cruz included goalkeeper Hugo Ventura, and outfield players Castro, Tengarrinha & Ukra in his 19 man squad as they prepare for their European Championship campaign. Portugal play England away on the 13th November. Also on international duty was defender Stéphane who represents the West Africa country of Burkina Faso. 16th August 2009 was the day many supporters thought they would never see but Olhanense’s first campaign in the top flight of Portuguese football got underway after an absence of 34 years. Five coaches and numerous cars left the Algarve early on the Sunday morning for the 600 mile round trip to Figueira da Foz on Portugal’s north west coast.

The latest list published recently is headed by Brazil, with 1,642 points closely followed by Spain, the Netherlands and Germany. England are down in 7th whilst Portugal, with 881 points, languish in 17th place, five places below the United States.

Former Sporting star Miguel Garcia, sidelined for the past two seasons through injury, is a quality player who gives the team width whilst Castro, Rui Baião and Ukra were industrious in Withmidfield.injuries, suspensions and international clearance awaited on Greg Nwokolo & Gomis, the manager had few attacking options. To add to his woes Guga was injured after just 18 minutes to be replaced by Messi. Youngsters Zequinha & Rabiola had few opportunities in attack and were replaced by Fabio & Rodrigo midway through the second half. Olhanense had more of the possession and might have snatched the points when Castro’s long range effort whistled past the post. With seven of the eight games finishing level, including Porto, Benfica & Sporting, the Algarveans will be pleased with this 0-0 result MAJOR NEW SPONSOR The Algarve Tourist Board are sponsoring the club to the tune of €100,000 with the word ALGARVE emblazoned on the front and back of the smart new kit which was worn for the first time at Naval.

It was fitting that the first two goals on this show piece occasion should be scored by Portuguese players. Nani (Man.Utd) after 10 minutes with Ricardo Cavalho equalising for Chelsea early in the second half. The game finished 2-2 with Chelsea winning the penalty shoot out 4-1.
