I hope you had a lovely summer, welcome back if you've spent the hotter weeks, visiting friends and family in the UK. The old routine is making a welcome comeback, school runs and homework, early nights and peaceful days. September is lovely time to spend here in the Algarve, the weather cools down, the streets are less crowded and so are the parking bays. We have featured Tavira's Madhatters bar this month, one of our favourite hangouts, we have some fabulous International Tapas from Mesa do Chefe, an article about Andre and Gordon, and their 2nd Adolescence, as well as all our usual features. Our focus is on the charming village of Cacelha Velha and the beautiful Manta Rota beach. We have a new home feature, this month courtesy of Frontera Furniture shop, and much much more. We hope you enjoy this issue. Bassett

Last month a 25 year old woman was saved from drowning in the sea at monte Gordo. life-guards were alerted to the situation by other swimmers who had managed to pull the woman onto the beach. the nicaraguan born woman was swimming in an unsupervised area when it appears she experienced difficulty in fairly rough conditions and swallowed water. she was taken to hospital in Faro where she was expected to recover from the ordeal.

The Gnr detained four people in the algarve in august on suspicion of drug offences; three during a border inspection at the castro marim/ayamonte crossing and another whom they observed watering a cannabis crop. the three detained at the border had in their posession a total of 280 individual doses of hashish, claim the Gnr. this is in additon to wednesdy's arrests of a suspected trafficer in budens. the man found watering his plants was already under military surveillance and the Gnr counted 72 plants, sufficient for more than 400 individual doses. last month Portimao Gnr arrested two people for the same crime in monchique where 50 plants were used in evidence.

When my father suggested i open a sports bar here i jumped at the opportunity.” danielle had previously trained as a beautician and still keeps her hand in by providing a service for family & friends. “i enjoy meeting so many different people from the four corners of the globe with their stories, jokes and even songs! We have some great mad hatter nights and many visitors have become friends. i have no desire to return to the uK and my partner nick and i are very excited as we are expecting to hear the patter of tiny feet early in the new Year. can you think of a better place to bring up children? i really enjoy walking through the quaint streets and gardens where the Portuguese families are enjoying the ambience of a late evening meal whilst the children play in a safe & loving environment.” the air-conditioned bar offers a wide range of cooked meals including the famous mad hatters mega breakfast. Open from 10.00am throughout the day until 2.00am (3.00am on Friday & saturday) meals are always available and a great favourite is the Grimsby battered cod with chips and mushy peas. Opening during the weekend of september 11th & 12th, the beach exhibition takes its inspiration from the rugged beauty of the algarve’s west coast. curated by interior decorator, tom compton, he has selected the display of paintings, ceramics, furnishings, lighting and sculptures. his motivation has been to capture the beauty of this unspoiled coastal wilderness with its dramatic cliffs, deep ravines, vast beaches and seasonal watercourses. dramatically conveying visions of the atlantic Ocean, he has selected paintings by elizabeth skingley, which are a highlight of the show. maritime flora and fauna are represented by Portuguese marble and soapstone sculptures, mounted on large beach pebbles. impressive collages and mirror frames have been moulded from plaster and shells, and table and ovenware decorated with maritime themes come from the celebrated Jersey Pottery. also in the show are unconventional lampshades made from wide-brimmed sun hats, created by Jean Jacques dussusasios at his studio in Porte de cliché, Paris.equally striking are the many-faceted light fittings designed by tom. he has selected driftwood smoothed by the motion of the sea, multicoloured and multi-textured pebbles and shells, then arranged them together into three-dimensional forms.

A new exhibition at Galeria Corte-Real in Paderne gives people living in the eastern Algarve an opportunity to sample the ambience of west coast beaches without going all the way there!

earlier this year tom was commissioned to create a beach bar by the boutique hotel, vila Joya in Galé (see photographs). like the exhibition he aimed to fashion a relaxed style using natural materials – many of them collected from the beach – including mobiles, shell sculptures and rough-hewn chandeliers. Working in tandem with Joy, the hotel’s owner, they have created a laid back scene to contrast with vila Joya’s two star michelin restaurant. being in the algarve is a marked change from tom’s previous life within the corporate world. he has worked as decorator and designer for liberty in london, hermes in london and Paris, conran habitat in the uK and usa, and as Global-visual director for lacoste and bally international. he can be contacted on the gallery phone number for decorative advice and a customised service. the beach exhibition continues until October 15th. it is preceded by the Women’s collective of contemporary art, which ends on september 10th. Our summer holiday started with our lovely West highland terrier ‘charlie’ being run over on our very quiet track. his injuries were serious and very sadly he did not make it. so when it came to writing for this month i thought, should my article be on grief, depression, guilt or the importance of animals to humans, or something more positive like what to look for in the next dog? being a rather clean and tidy person, i thought about dogs that did not shed hair or cause allergies. is this possible? so this one is for our lovely dog charlie, thank you. What causes pet allergies? all pets with fur give off tiny molecules called allergens. all dogs give off allergens in their skin, saliva, and urine. no matter how long or short their hair, or what type of breed, no dog is truly hypoallergenic. Hair Length not the issue skin dander attaches to pet hair, and it's the shed hair that's thought to transfer pet allergens to humans. but the amount of hair isn't the issue. dogs with long hair aren't more likely to cause allergy than dogs with short hair. but some dogs, such as the Portuguese water dog shed their hair less than others do. also, some people are more sensitive to allergens than others. Which dogs shed the least dander? the Kennel club lists several breeds that have "non-shedding coats." they shed a bit, but unlike many other dogs, they don't shed an undercoat and tend to give off less dander. the bedlington terrier, bichon frise, chinese crested, irish water spaniel, Kerry blue terrier, maltese, Poodle, Portuguese water dog, schnauzer, soft-coated Wheaten terrier, and

Xoloitzcuintli (mexican hairless dog). Designer Dogs some specific mixes, called designer dogs, are very popular and are now bred among themselves as separate breeds. the labrador/poodle mix (is that a loodle?) is said to be a lowdander dog, although the Kennel club warns that there's no guarantee these dogs will have poodle-like coats. Low-dander dogs not low allergy? are the aKc's low-dander dogs really the least allergenic? maybe not. One study of 288 dogs of eight different breeds showed that only labrador retrievers gave off significantly less allergen than other breeds. among the most allergenic dogs: Poodles, which are on the low-dander list and Yorkshire terriers. individuals vs. breeds bottom line: When it comes to being allergenic, a dog's individual characteristics matter more than its breed or its sex. dogs with dandruff give off more allergens. breeds more likely to suffer hereditary dandruff problems include cocker spaniels, springer spaniels, basset hounds, West highland white terriers, dachshunds, labrador and golden retrievers and German shepherds. Dust mites in Dog Domains if you're sneezing, it may not be the dog. dust mites -- a major allergen source -- thrive in places where your dog spends the most time. a recent study suggests replacing dog beds that are over a year old. no Hypoallergenic Dogs -- or Cats cat saliva carries potent allergens. as with dogs, hair length isn't the issue. some cat breeds -- siberian and russian blue cats -- are reputed to be less allergenic. but there's no such thing as a cat that can't cause

W hen Gordon railton met andré Walton at an open mic night at the Quinta da Fonte do bispo, they hit it off immediately. Gordon has been playing keyboards professionally since his twenties (yes, they really did have keyboards back then – sorry Gordon) but his ambition had always been to move into the jazz arena. despite an enviable track record (he toured with Joe cocker amongst others) jazz was never something that he had a chance to play. andré first studied and played jazz while at the university of nevada in reno. he played with several of the university’s jazz groups before he moved to las vegas to play there. “Playing the casino circuit is good bread and butter stuff but i much prefer the kind of gigs we get in the algarve” he told us. When 2nd adolescence play as a trio (when they are also known as chips salsa & Jazz) Gordon and andre play with one of three percus sionists. dhiren van den bergh plays latin drums, bongos and congas, and was their rhythm section for the first 6 months before traveling to thailand. the band calls on his skills whenever a latin sound is needed. many of the wedding and party gigs that the band is offered call for a tra ditional drum kit and that is where michel steps in. With seven dogs, seven cats and two donkeys he and his wife are kept pretty busy but mi chel’s passion for music drives him to play with chips, salsa and Jazz along with two other bands. 2nd adolescence plays melodies we all recognize but they inevitably add their own twist; their haunting rendi tion of caravan, or the excitement of manha de carnival (black Orpheus) or misty will stay with you for days after you’ve heard them. although they have been in exis tence for less than a year they are getting busy. “Our bookings lead to other bookings because we have fun. the fun that we have and our love of playing jazz is infectious. Our audiences leave with a swing to their walk and a smile on their face”, Gor don tells us. although Gordon is retired from his professional photography business he runs a very active photo club at the sao bras museum. the club runs trips to interesting and photo genic places regularly and has a per manent exhibition in the museum’s old gallery from the autumn. andré is an entrepreneur at heart. When the day came and he was made an ‘offer he couldn’t refuse’ for his small group of european and american businesses he moved on to do consultancy work for small companies wishing to expand their businesses either by new product development or by establishing a presence in the us. One thing lead to another and he ‘went back to school’ to gain a Phd in social Psy chology (he tells me that social psy chologists are that ones who taught psychologists how to party!). his area of research and his passion is creativity and his recently-released book “embracing the new era” (available from amazon) address es what skills we need in the new era ….. the era of creativity! andré teaches management classes for an mba degree in Justice management at the university of nevada via the internet from his home on the side of a remote hill here in the algarve, he is also the visiting Professor of cre ativity and entrepreneurship for the university of Wales newport busi ness school. 2nd adolescence can be contacted at 281 971705 or 917045202 Adolescence

Page www.eastalgarvemag.com Focus on Cacela

The small beautiful village cacela velha is situated in the westernmost point of ria Formosa natural Park, in the exact spot where the “ria” ends, in the middle of the dunes, on the way to manta rota beach. this village rises over the top of a hill, offering a view over the coastline. it has preserved its traditional features, and it also remained untouched by mass tourism. nevertheless, its typical restaurants enjoy a lot of recognition among visitors, who take great delight in regional specialities. this rather ancient village stands out for its emblematic popular architecture: white houses with blue frames around the doors and windows. the historical centre was classified as a national trust building. next to the fortress you will find a viewpoint that provides a breathtaking panorama over the “ria” and the sea. the tiny village is quite picturesque and seems not to have been spoiled by the ravages of tourism. the calcada streets that lead through the tiny settlement, perched above the sea and sandbars speak of an age gone

by. the igreja (church), the fortress walls and the traditional style of the houses give the visitor a flavour or what life looked like in algarve quite some time back. From outside the church, steps lead down to a sandy waterfront walk, fringed by cacti and greenery. at low tide, tiny crabs scuttle about whenever there are no human footfalls to be felt. across the narrow waterway can be seen the sandbar cbeach.acela velha has a small ‘footprint’ as a settlement, which inevitably CaCeLa VeLHa

leads to some quaint juxtapositions, such as the small domicile attached to the cemetery wall. there are restaurant/bar establishments for your delectation, both near the generous parking facility that graces the approach to cacela velha, and both offering reasonably-priced refreshments in a lovely setting, with indoor and outdoor seating on offer. as well as functioning as a working fishing village, cacela velha has played its part in algarve’s chequered history. You can still see the fort, which stood guard on the coast to warn of any invading forces. the edifice is now the headquarters for the local brigade of the Gnr (national Guard), and was built on the remains of the original fort, which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake that devastated quite a lot of Portugal and the algarve. Just along the coast road you'll find the beautiful manta rota beach, with bustling cafes and promenade at this time of year. For many years, manta rota beach was just a small fishermen’s village. however, this beach is in present day a very famous beach, due to its tepid peaceful waters. it is one of europe’s longest beaches, placed in the borderline between the open sea, the dunes and the barrier islands of ria Formosa. there is ample parking, showers, wcs, restaurants, disabled access, childrens playground, night time music entertainment, and a fabulous calm atmosphere, quite unlike any other beach in the east. although it can be very busy in July and august, september is a lovely time to visit. A s mentioned last year, if you are a homeowner interested in optimizing your rental income you should take time to analyse if you are still on track to achieve your goal. as a villa manager, i prefer to do this during september of each year. this gives me ample time to make adjustments if and when needed, to implement them before October and be ready for next year. the past 12 months have been different from previous years due to economic headwinds in europe, which resulted in more people than usual spending holidays in their home country, an increase in last minute bookings (not necessarily at a discount) and a shift in the overall nationalities of our guests from 65% uK / ireland, 33% mainland europe and 2% rest of the World to respectively 50%/48%/2%. due to our marketing mix we have been able to achieve more or less the same occupancy rates as the year before for the majority of houses and for a good number of properties we achieved higher occupancy rates. multi channel marketing is a combination of traditional means of advertising in daily news papers and holiday magazines, internet marketing such as having your own website and holiday rental portals and making use of the network of contacts of a well established villa management agency. depending on the type of property you own some channels work better than others. the right mix will make it work for you, but none of them by

Page 19 its self is the holy Grail. if you have been relying only on one source for your bookings, the chances are the number of weeks booked this year is lower than the year before. some homeowners are reluctant to set an annual budget for the marketing of their home even though it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. a budget of euro 400 to 600 will be more than enough. not investing in the marketing of your home is a bit odd. having spent a lot of money to buy your place in the sun, then fit it out with many desirable features and furnish it to a very high standard in keeping with its luxury surroundings, you basically have gone out of your way to make your property attractive to renters. except you are not telling ithem!fyou are marketing but are not getting the results you expected, there may be other reasons. either there is something wrong with the marketing mix or the pricing of your property. sometimes simply changing the photos will do the trick. it is best to address this issue as soon a possible because a week of lost rental income will be lost forever, unlike the inventory in a bookstore which you can always sell or discount the very next day. to find out how happy homes algarve can help you and your home reach a wide target audience, call 281 320 281. CarobThewww.eastalgarvemag.com

All you ever needed to know about the Carob tree, from our gardening expert Mark O'Shaughnessy The carob tree has been grown since antiquity in most countries of the mediterranean basin, usually in mild and dry places with poor soils. its value was recognized by the ancient Greeks, who brought it from its native middle east to Greece and italy, and by the arabs, who disseminated it along the north african coast and north into spain and Portugal. it was spread in recent times to other mediterranean-like regions such as california, arizona, mexico, chile and argentina by spaniards, to parts of australia by mediterranean emigrants and to south africa and india by the english. the carob tree is an important component of the mediterranean vegetation and its cultivation in marginal and prevailing calcareous soils of the mediterranean region is important environmentally and economically. traditionally, grafted carob trees have been inter planted with olives, grapes, almonds and barley in low intensity farming systems in most producing countries. carob pods with their sugary pulp are a staple in the diet of farm animals and are eaten by children as snacks or by people in times of famine. however, currently the main interest is seed production for gum extraction. Kibbled pods have been shipped from producing countries to all over europe. because of low orchard management requirements the carob tree is suitable for parttime farming and shows potential for

planting in semi-arid mediterranean or subtropical regions. the trees are also useful as ornamentals and for landscaping, windbreaks and afforestation. cattle can browse on leaves and the wood is suitable for Worldfuel. production is estimated at about 310 000 t/year produced from some 200 000 ha with very variable yields depending on cultivar, region and farming practice. spain is the leading carob producer, producing on average 135 000 t/year (maPa 1994), followed by italy, Portugal, morocco, Greece, cyprus, turkey, algeria and some other countries. the scientific name of carob tree (ceratonia siliqua l.) derives from Greek keras, horn, and latin siliqua, alluding to the hardness and shape of the pod. the common name originates from the hebrew kharuv, from which are derived the arabic kharrub and later algarrobo or garrofero in spanish, carrubo in italian, caroubier in French, Karubenbaum in German, alfarrobeira in Portuguese, charaoupi in Greek, charnup in turkish, and garrofer or garrover in catalan. the carob is also known as st. John’s bread or locust bean in reference to the presumed use of its ‘locusts’ as food by st. John the baptist and, from that derives Johannisbrotbaum in German. Jewellers used its uniform seeds as a unit of weight (200 mg), the carat. the carob tree grows as a sclerophyllous evergreen shrub or tree up to 10 m high, with a broad semispherical crown and a thick trunk with brown rough bark and sturdy branches. leaves are 10-20 cm long, alternate, pinnate, with or without a terminal leaflet. leaflets are 3-7 cm long, ovate to elliptic, in 4-10 normally opposite pairs, coriaceous, dark green and shiny above, pale green beneath and finely veined with margins slightly ondulate, and tiny stipules. the leaves are sclerophyllous and have a very thick single-layered upper epidermis, the cells of which contain phenolic compounds in the large vacuoles, and stomata are present only in the lower epidermis and arranged in clusters. carob does not shed its leaves in the autumn but only in July every second year, and it only partially renews leaves in spring (april and may). the original distribution of c. siliqua is not clear as it has undergone extensive cultivation since ancient times. it is suggested that its range in the wild included turkey, cyprus, syria, lebanon, israel, southern Jordan, egypt, arabia, tunisia and libya and that it moved westward at an early stage. carob is believed to have been spread by the Greeks to Greece and italy and then by the arabs along the coast of northern africa into the south and east of spain, from where it migrated to the south of Portugal and the southeast of France. its wild occurrence in the western mediterranean is doubtful. spontaneous carobs occur in

Forms of spontaneous carobs are particularly common at low altitudes along the spanish mediterranean coast, southwest spain, southern Portugal, the balearic islands, southeast France, the shores of southern italy including sicily, the adriatic coast of croatia, the aegean region in Greece and turkey, along the northern and southern ranges of the isle of cyprus, in the islands of malta, in the maritime belt of lebanon and israel, the north and south of morocco and the coastline in tunisia. the carob is one of the most useful native mediterranean trees. in producing countries, carob pods have traditionally been used as animal and human food and currently the main use is the seed for gum extraction. carob pods provide fodder for ruminants and nonruminants. in the wild, carob shelter, foliage and beans attract browsing animals. the pods contain indigestible and valuable seeds. carob timber is hard and close-grained, and has been used to make also was traditionally used to make slow-burning charcoal. ceratonia oreothauma is extensively used for goat fodder in its native ranges. the pulp can be ground into a fine powder for use in human nutrition. carob powder consists of 46% sugar, 7% protein and small amounts of numerous minerals and vitamins and is thus quite nutritious. after oven-drying, the powder can be added to cakes, bread, sweets, ice creams or drinks as a flavouring. carob powder ‘cocoa’ has advantages over chocolate in that has fewer calories and neither caffeine nor theobromine. its flavour is not as rich as dark chocolate but resembles milk chocolate. Owing to the high sugar content of the pod and its relatively low cost, carob pulp was among the first horticultural crops used for the production of industrial alcohol by fermentation in several mediterranean countries. in some countries, e.g. egypt, carob syrup is a popular drink obtained by extracting carob kibbles with water. arvesting is the major cost in carob production owing to the expensive and scarce labour in most developed countries. manual harvesting of the pods represents 30-35% of the total production cost for an orchard. this cost can be divided between knocking (or shaking) and collecting operations. Knocking is a traditional operation performed with thin long poles to knock down ripe pods. manual or mechanical harvesting by trunk shakers and manpower shakers is affected by size and growth habit of the trees, pod distribution in the branches and pod abscission. collecting operations depend on yield, size and shape of pod, and orchard density. the main aim for new carob orchard establishment should be mechanical harvesting. some agronomical features of the tree are important to improve mechanical harvesting of icarob.nPortugal the future of the carob production is being protected by an interesting initiative to promote carob growing with the establishment of the associaçao interprofissional para o desenvolvimento da Produçao e valorizaçao da alfarrova (aida) in 1985 in the algarve, Portugal. this independent association brings together efforts of interested people and institutions involved in carob production, processing and marketing.

Environment more than 90 percent of u s. eggs come from caged hens. these birds have a space smaller than the size of a sheet of paper to move around, and live in filthy conditions. aside from animal welfare concerns, that’s bad for our health, too, Penn sylvania state university shows, because researchers recently found eggs raised on pasture are much more nutritious than eggs from their caged counterparts.

6 things food industry execs aren’t telling you: Penn state’s study, published re cently in the journal renewable ag riculture and Food systems found that pastured hens—ones kept out side on different pastures where they can exhibit natural behavior and for age for bugs and grasses—boasted higher vitamin and omega-3 fatty acid levels when compared to their commercially fed, battery-cage-kept counterparts. eggs from pastured hens contained twice as much vita min e and 2.5 times more total ome ga-3 fatty acids as the eggs from caged birds contained. 12 reasons to buy only organic What it means: there are dozens of claims that manufacturers can make on egg cartons. some of them are mean ingful, but others are just ways to trick consumers into thinking they’re buying eggs from happy chickens. (remember, 90 percent of chicken eggs produced in this country come from the worst type of production system—battery cages.) in an ideal situation, you would pur chase your eggs from a local farmer in your area who raises chickens on pasture with plenty of space per bird, and uses moveable, open-air chicken houses, sometimes called chicken tractors, to protect the birds from predators. (You can look for this type of farmer on localharvest. org.) Of course, you could also raise backyard chickens, if you have what it takes. eliminating cruel chicken cages is a matter of human health as well as animal welfare. the farther you take chickens away from their natural behaviors, the worse the quality of their eggs or meat. “When you put four or five chickens in tiny cages, they can’t engage in normal chicken behavior—peck ing in the dirt, dusting. if they’re in a cage, they can’t do any of these things,” explains chicken expert Gail damerow, author of the classic sto rey’s Guide to raising chickens (sto rey, 2010). (she hasn’t purchased a store-bought egg since 1982.) “the pressure of the wire cages against their feet causes infections, their 1989

Worried about bad eggs? How to sell the healthiest ones What ‘free-range,’ ‘cage-free,’ ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ truly mean. Are they really safer? In the wake of the nationwide recall of eggs for contamination with salmonella, many consumers may be wondering what types of eggs are healthiest and safest to buy?

• “Cage-Free” “cage-free is cer tainly not like Old mcdonald’s farm,” explains Paul shapiro, spokesper son for the humane society of the united states. but it’s a lot better than battery cages, where most eggs are produced. “cage-free” means that animals are not kept in cages, but generally they are kept inside in an enclosed building. While this is less than ideal, at least this setup gives animals a chance to spread their wings and lay eggs in nest boxes, which is closer to their natural behavior. cage-free does not imply antibiotics were not used on •hens.“Free-Range” or “Free-roaming” usually these types of operations allow chickens outside of cages in barns or warehouses, but they aren’t required to provide the animals any specific amount of time outside—or even exposure to sunlight indoors. there’s no third-party inspection re quired for free-range claims, and the chickens can be debeaked or forced into molting through starvation, ac cording to the humane society of the united states.

• “natural” this means that the finished product hasn’t undergone certain unnatural processes; in this case, that product is the egg. how ever, just because eggs are labeled natural doesn’t mean a hen wasn’t pumped up with antibiotics or other unnatural substances. and it cer tainly doesn’t mean the chickens were raised in clean, humane condi tions. For all intents and purposes, natural means nothing.

feathers rub off on the side of the cages. basically, they’re just totally frustrated. they’ve got nothing to do. they can’t run around and eat flies and take dust baths. they just sit and lay eggs—what kind of life is that?” One result of all that stress and cruelty is that confined birds’ eggs contain less nutrition than eggs from hens with room to roam. Why organic eggs are worth the cost and what the labels on the egg carton really mean:

• “Organic” a usda-certified or ganic label means the eggs came from hens that were not enclosed in battery cages, and that must be of fered access to the outdoors. how ever, this doesn’t guarantee that the animals ever go outside. Organic eggs come from hens that were fed certified-organic feed, free of antibi otics, pesticides, and other animal products. Forced molting and de beaking are permitted in certifiedorganic production. annual inspec tions are required.

Back before people had stricter safety regulations and better methods of measuring the levels of toxic gas in mines, miners took canaries with them into mines because the birds were very sensitive to the pockets of poisonous gases they encountered while mining. if the canary died, there was toxic gas present, and the miners were able to escape from the area before they succumbed to the gas. therefore, the expression "miner's canary" refers to the demise of something that serves as a warning of potential danger to others. For many years now a cartel (illegal consortium) of bullion banks have been suppressing the price of Gold by various illegal means such as naked shorting of stocks and selling leased Gold into the market. they do this to conceal the fact that Fiat currencies, in particular the u s dollar, are losing value very rapidly. if the price of Gold should rise suddenly and spectacularly, it would indicate to buyers of u.s. debt that the currency was depreciating, and this depreciation must be considered in their investment analysis. this is why Gold is called the “canary in the coal mine”; the price of Gold will soar when the u s dollar finally succumbs to the inevitable collapse, due to the unregulated running of the printing presses. What i would like you to remember is that newspapers and tv pundits do their share in capping the price of Gold with their inane arguments such as “Gold is a poor investment because it pays no interest”. What a wonderful insight! Gold has tripled in value in seven years and paper money, though it may pay 1 or 2% interest, is losing value through Withinflation.those thoughts in mind, i would like you to think about what you currently hear these same pundits preaching – the death of the euro! With all the currencies in the world to chose from, many if not most of them struggling, they are trashing the euro. could there be an ulterior motive? could the euro be the new canary, the canary in the Gold mine! if the euro were to rise suddenly and spectacularly, it would be an indication that the World’s reserve currency, the u s dollar was about to lose its crown. to protect this supremacy, the u s Government has enlisted the help of a few unscrupulous banks to short and talk down the euro, to give these same entities time to extricate themselves from their u.s dollar holdings, before the final collapse. simply remember, the euro is 15% backed by Gold. countries without a significant Gold holding will find it impossible to back a new currency when their own currency fails. Gold’s impending rise will send the euro into orbit as the other fiat currencies crumble. a final note: Portugal has one of the highest proportions of Gold in its central bank reserves; this fact should help us all sleep better in the coming financial storm. Richard Bassett Snr.

The Canaries are about to sing a duet!

1Children. children are the golfers of the future, and we must encourage them as much as possible. many golf clubs have specially reduced fees for juniors. eight years of age is a good time to start. children imitate well and soon develop the rhythm of the swing. a two-handed grip is best until they are 13-14 years old, then, with more strength in their hands, they can change to the overlapping or interlocking grip. i recommend that children would enjoy pulling their parents trolley's, as they can learn a great deal about the rules of the game and which clubs to use, also they learn to be courteous on the course. never try to tell them all the rules of golf, otherwise you may turn them against the game. Just tell them a few essentials, the others they will gradually acquire, watch as many good players as you can.

T his months article, a little information regarding Junior Golf, ladies, Over 60's and Professional Golf.

2golf for Ladies. not being physically as strong as men, ladies need to do plenty of exercise to strengthen hands and fingers, and they can also take a little longer swing going back as long as the last two fingers of the left hand are holding on firmly. most ladies i feel, have more sense of rhythm than men. it's important to make sure your clubs are not too heavy.

•Course record holder at Benamor, 65 (6 under par), although has scored 60 strokes on 3 occasions (Not counted as a course record as they were not scored in a professional competition)

3golf for over 60's. When you come to your later years, you must remember not to worry if you cannot hit as far as you did years ago. Just concentrate on your short game and putting, and your cards will still show a good score. it might be advisable to have a little more whip in your shafts and clubs slightly lighter to help with club-head speed. use plenty of wrist work in your swing to compensate for lack of pivot and shoulder movement. 4Professional golf. it probably looks to you as if Professionals always swing very fast. but you must remember that the tournament Pro is always playing golf and has trained his muscles, hands and fingers. he can swing fast and still keep his rhythm. club Professionals, like myself, do not play a great deal. but we spend most of our time teaching and always have a club in our hands. Our work on such jobs as replacing grips, and doing other repairs, helps to strengthen our hands and fingers iconsiderably.fyouaimat becoming a Pro, you must play as much as you possibly can. read all you can about golfin fact, you must dream about golf. there is only one way to get to the top and that is by practising at every opportunity. Of course, you must know what you are about, so make sure that all your practice is based on the principle of a sound swing. Play on as many different courses as you possibly can to help with judging distances. if you realise that you will never be a champion, then concentrate on your teaching. You cannot do both. if you are teaching all day, your own golf is bound to suffer-but there is great satisfaction in helping other people to play well. a good club-pro is always courteous and obliging. enjoy your golf. A club with a fascinating history and a bright future by Chris Wright.

After a summer of change with a new manager, new backroom staff & twelve new signings there was a sense of excitement as the crowd of nearly 6000 packed into the José arcanjo stadium, Olhão to witness Olhanense’s first game of the season against v.Guimarães. seven new faces made their debut under daúto Faquirá and the game was only ten minutes old when a flowing Olhanense move, involving six players, resulted in nuno Piloto’s shot narrowly going wide. the home side was playing some attractive football whilst the visitors were missing ricardo & douglas (suspended) and moreno, transferred to leicester city in the summer. Paulo sérgio, Jorge Gonçlaves and the 24 year old vinícius (ex. rio ave) were the pick of the home side. the one area where Olhanense struggled was in goal where the nervous moretto failed to gather several high balls. the opposite was true of the visitors keeper nilson who made three world class saves to deny Olhanense victory. a fifty metres cross field pass picked out Jorge Gonçlaves who was only denied a deserved goal by the brilliance of nilson. the final score of 0-0 did not reflect Olhanense’s superiority and the visitors will have been happy to escape with a point. Four days later the team travelled 600kms north to coimbra to take on academica who had sensationally beaten benfica 2-1 in lisbon on the opening day of the season. Former Olhanense manager Jorge costa was in buoyant mood but the estudantes were in for a shock of their own as their late lead was cancelled out by a stoppage time penalty to give Olhanense a share of the spoils. a very quiet first-half produced one scoring opportunity when academica’s diogo valente's 15th minute free-kick took a deflection and struck the post. in the second-half it was a more assured Olhanense performance with former belenenses striker Yontcha making a significant difference. he came close to scoring in the 85th minute but his shot rattled the crossbar. Just when it seemed there would be another stalemate diogo Gomes popped up to head home Junior Paraiba's cross in the 90th minute. but the visitors hit back and deep into stoppage time eder handled in the box and up stepped Yontcha to convert the spot mood as they set off on their long trek home. With midfielders delson and the exciting young prospect lulinha having received FiFa international clearance, manager daú to Faquirá is assembling a team capable of maintaining a strong presence in the top flight. Olhanense’s playing budget of €1.4m, the lowest in the league, is dwarfed by that of benfica €40m, Fc Porto €40m & sporting €25. incidentally, chelsea had a bill of £167m in 2008/9 whilst manchester united (£123m) recently paid €8.8m for the unknown v.Guimaraes striker sbébé!eptember is an exciting month with away games at sporting & Fc Porto. sandwiched in between is a home again against newly promoted local rivals Portimonense (Portimão) on the weekend of 18th/19th september. the british expat group now numbers some 200 and if you would like more information please contact: Chris Wright 916 504 neilandem@sapo.ptorChristopher.wright@hotmail.co.uk903emilyRichardson939486870

PORTugaL COaCH banneD the Portuguese Football Federation has suspended national coach carlos Queiroz for one month after a disciplinary committee found him guilty of misconduct. he was accused of insulting an anti-doping team sent to test the Portugal squad ahead of the World cup, and that his aggressive behaviour was disruptive to their work. Queiroz will not be available for the eouropean championship qualifiers against cyprus on sept. 3 and norway four days later. Queriroz fought the charges and sir alex Ferguson testified on Queiroz's behalf as a character witness. Queiroz complained that he was being subjected to a "public lynching" as details of the inquiry, into the incident back in may, were leaked to the media. Officials sent to carry out routine tests on Portugal players said Queiroz harassed and intimidated them and used foul language, according to media reports.

even in the world of super rich football an amazing story. manchester united manager, sir alex Ferguson, was in Portugal as a character witness for underfire national team coach carlos Queiroz, Ferguson took the opportunity to tie up a €8.8 deal for bébé, who had spent just five weeks with vitoria de Guimaraes. bébé played football in a homeless team during a brief spell on the streets before his potential was spotted by third division team estrela de amadora (lisbon), where he first came to prominence. now he will get the chance to feature for one of the world's most famous clubs, which Ferguson admitted is a meteoric rise by anyone's assessment. "it is a fairytale when you read about his background," said Ferguson. so how did he become a footballer? he learned to play on the streets but was spotted playing for the loures junior team by e.amadora & came through the ranks there. so, united got him from e amadora? no. When they failed to pay him five weeks ago, he joined v.Guimaraes on a free transfer. they snapped him up and stuck him on a five year contract with a €9million release clause. united took a gamble for a player who has appeared only in the 3rd division and a handful of friendlies for Guimaraes. What are his strengths? he is said to be fast with raw ability & a sweet right foot. at 6ft 2in, he's good in the air as well. united have eight senior strikers now. Will he play this season? Well, because he's under 21 he will not cost united a slot in their 25-man Premier league squad. now here’s a poser? Will nani be asked to look after bé bé ?

cornish hamlet of doublebois, terry and Jack find they have swapped the newly built streets of suburban london for the adventure of the countryside. the woods and river become their playground, rabbitcatching and night-fishing their new pastimes. but it is the railway, above all, which delights them. Picked at random from the group of evacuees by a middle-aged couple, the brothers discover that the main london to Penzance line runs through a cutting right below the tiny terraced vottage where they are to live, the goods yard and sidings lie a couple of hundred yards down the line: to Jack and terry, sons of a railwayman, no. 7 the railway cottages seems the perfect new home. it is the richest of childhoods, full of colour, humour and the unselfish love that uncle Jack, an irreverent Welsh ex-miner, and his generous wife auntie rose, offer without reserve to the two young strangers. and despite fierce rivalry between local kids and the ‘vackies’, village life seems wonderful to the boys. that is, until the bombing of nearby Plymouth and dreadful news from the battlefield shatter the peace of doublebois, reminders of the brutal reality of a war which at times had seemed so far away. their mother, worried about their fate, instructed them in a secret code: on the postcard she gave them to send home, one kiss was to signal that their new home was horrible and she would come and get them, two if it was all right and three if it was nice. Within hours of going to live with “auntie rose” and “uncle Jack”, the two boys, aged seven and 11, sent their card covered in kisses. Warm-hearted and moving, Kisses on a Postcard is a vivid and intimate portrait of a neglected part of our wartime history; a compelling and uplifting memoir of growing up in an extraordinary time. be warned though, have a box of tissues at the ready. the book is available via amazon, Play or better still, speak to elizabeth at a lura dos livros in tavira and she'll happily save you a hcopy.appy reading.

Kisses on a Postcard is an autobiographical book about Frisby's years as an evacuee, sent to Cornwall with his older brother Jack in 1940.

This months book, Kisses on a Postcard, was highly recommended to me by a friend. she thought it would interest me as the story begins in Welling, the town close to where we lived in the uK, and the children are of similar ages to my children. i have since read numerous reviews of the book, all of which could not praise it highly enough. Originally a radio play, then a musical, it is the true story of Jack and terry and a cornish village during the second World War. terence Frisby, is also the author of the play there’s a Girl in my soup (london’s longest-running icomedy).tisJune 13th, 1940. terry, aged seven, and his elder brother Jack, eleven, stand in a crowd of children on the narrow platform at Welling station. Wearing labels, carrying gas masks and small suitcases, they are evacuees, or ‘vackies’, awaiting the steam engine which will pull them across the country towards their unknown destination – and new lives When they reach the tiny Lura dos Livros Lura dos Livros
