News São Brás mayor demands “urgent EN2 renovation”

ince the beginning of the 2015, the Algarve has been referenced in 46,697 articles published in online news media around the world. The study results from a global monitoring system run by Cision which reports that the Algarve, the holiday destination of choice for many thousands of foreigners every year, has reached a worldwide audience by the use of the worldwide web. The US company Live and Invest Overseas helped out with its report on the Algarve region as "the best place to retire in Europe." This single article reached 116 countries. Among the most receptive media in different countries, Germany came out top with 14,548 references in articles and news items. The US was second with 9,147 references.

Not far behind was the Algarve’s traditional supporters club in the United Kingdom with 4,638 references. In African countries, Angola led the field and in Asia the volume of information online in Vietnam, India, China, South Korea, Singapore and even Afghanistan surprised researchers. Cision analyses over 85,000 daily online information sites worldwide and the spread of Algarve related news and articles is a vindication of the plan by the Portuguese Tourist Authority (Turismo de Portugal) to apportion more of its annual budget on online promotion rather than the expensive and not cost-effective sponsorship programmes that have defined past activity.

ão Brás de Alportel mayor Vítor Guerreiro has renewed his appeal to Portugal’s infrastructure authority (IP) to carry out “urgent renovations” on the EN2, linking the town to Faro and the A22 motorway. This is the second time Guerreiro has come out fighting. Last year he put the same issue to a meeting between Algarve borough councils and Estradas de Portugal road authority. Problems centre on the need for what Guerreiro calls “essential roadworks” to ensure driver and pedestrian safety, and promote the town within the region. Improvements involve work to “dangerous corners”, and making areas like Sítio dos Machados safer for pedestrians. A council statement highlights the need for a roundabout at Coiro da Burra, saying improved accesses will not only help the development of the area’s local businesses, they could also save lives. The statement stresses that the improvements – particularly the link to the A22 motorway – used to be included in renovation plans for the EN125.

ary Malcolm, well known and repected golf professional passed away on 7th of August aged 52 after a short illness. Gary worked here in the Eastern Algarve as well as Switzerland and Germany and will be a sad loss to the golfing community of this area. In his honour a shotgun golf competition sponsored by the Hair Studio and Danny Maverick entertainments has been organised for Thurs 5th November at Benamor Golf, tee off 8.30am. The day will include a round of golf, followed by a meal and prize giving and rounded off with music and dancing. Inflamation What Is Inflammation In Your Body and How Can You Eliminate It Naturally?

O

ne of the most common negative symptoms experienced by people I work with, but also by many other people who suffer from various diseases is inflammation. This can show up under various forms and most of the time directly involves a dysfunctional digestive system. WHERE DOES INFLAMMATION COME FROM? Inflammation is the way the body initiates self-healing. Out of control, it can result in an excessive free radical activity and tissue damage. There are numerous mechanisms in the body that cause inflammation. The immune response is one of the main mechanisms to initiate inflammatory processes. Citokines are one of the most known molecules involved in the immune response, responsible for cellular apoptosis and inflammatory cascades. A high level of citokines is associated with insulin resistance, diabetes and many other health problems. INSULIN, CHOLESTEROL, C-REACTIVE PROTEIN One of the main markers generating inflammation is hyperinsulinism. In medical literature this is a main factor associated with cardiovascular diseases. A high level of insulin (above 5), determines high levels of pro-inflammatory mediators and is also associated with a high level of C reactive protein, a main marker for inflammation. Studies show the high level of C reactive protein can be determined up to 73% by trans fats consumption found in processed foods. Cholesterol has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and a critical importance in regulating inflammation and free radical activity. A low level of cholesterol is associated with many auto-immune inflammatory conditions. As with a high cholesterol level, C reactive protein is a response to inflammation, not the cause of it. Causes are multiple and they are

mainly generated by nutritional deficiencies, glucose metabolism malfunction, hyperinsulinism, toxicity and the body’s response to stress. A level higher than 3 for this marker indicates a higher inflammation level. Analyzing C reactive protein in association with homocysteine and insulin levels is essential to properly monitor inflammation in the body. INTESTINAL DYSBIOSIS Research shows that inflammation often involves digestive function. Autoimmune diseases for example, mostly always involve intestinal dysbiosis, which are often not considered in allopathic, conventional treatments. That’s why it’s essential focus on re-establishing the digestive function and immunity, to normalize the inflammatory response. Reactive foods, pathogen infections, heavy metal toxicity also cause mucosal barrier damage and inflammation. NATURAL ALTERNATIVES TO ELIMINATE INFLAMMATION LONG TERM To maintain normal biological functions, first follow a clean, organic diet which fits your unique metabolism. A wrong diet, even if “organic”, can quickly become a main stressor for the body. It is also essential to eliminate inflammatory foods (fried, sugar, processed, the above mentioned vegetable oils, reactive foods like gluten and dairy, additives and other toxic, industrial substances, etc.) Proteolytic enzymes like bromelaine, pancreatin, serrapeptase contain powerful anti-inflammatory effects. The pioneer of fizzy drinks, Jacob Schweppe discovered a process of carbonating water as early as 1783. The company’s profile expanded in the 1920’s when William Barribal, an art deco designer of high repute, became involved in producing images to market the Schweppes brand.

His work, including classic railway posters for the London & North Eastern Line, his cigarette and playing cards, are now collectors’ pieces. Since the original Schweppes tiled panels cannot be chiseled from the wall a photograph is the best record that can be made. F ERRY P O I N T This month sees the launch of a brand new Tapas menu at Ferry Point bar in Tavira, a new collaboration with A Taste of Tavira.

e introduced Ray and Liz in April this year as they started their new venture 'A Taste of Tavira', when we were lucky enough to taste their wonderful food (although disguised as a photoshoot). One evening at Ferry Point bar we were chatting to Liz and Ray who mentioned that they'd like to expand into a Tapas style restaurant. We at the time were looking for a cook to serve light meals during lunch times and early evenings. As you can imagine it wasn't long before great minds thought alike and the idea of 'A taste of Tavira at Ferry Point' was born. For as long as he can remember

f you are a homeowner interested in optimizing your rental income you should take time to analyse whether or not you are still on track to achieve your goal. Many of you know, as a villa manager I prefer to do this during September of each year. This gives me ample time to make adjustments if and when needed and to implement them before October and be ready for next year. If you have your property advertised on holiday letting portals you have probably noticed a decline in conversion rates due to a lower quality of inquiries. Various rental portals have started to offer you the choice between a one off payment to list your property for a specific period of time, or a commission based free listing without time limit. The latter option works well for the portals as in a crowded online market place they try to change the relationship between renter and owner to one between renter and portal. Moreover, they also simply make more money by receiving a commission from each booking versus a one off payment for advertising. Renters are persuaded to book via the portal based on the promise of online security. However, the additional cost of securing a booking must be paid by someone; either the homeowner receives less or passes the cost on to the renter by increasing the rent. Time will tell if this strategy will work for the portals as with the internet it is very easy to compare prices of the same property or similar properties. In the meantime, homeowners need to navigate carefully not to loose out. With the right strategy you do not have to!

For us as a property management company with many listings on various platforms it is much easier to identify what works and what doesn’t work. For an individual homeowner this is more difficult to find out, but not impossible. You just need more time and resources. To attract interest from renters for your property, advertising works well, but you have to be careful not to overspend. Having a good marketing mix and active management of ‘early deal’ and ‘last minute’ discount scheme can make the difference between doing fine or doing great in difficult times. Multi channel marketing is a combination of traditional means of advertising in daily news papers and holiday magazines, internet marketing such as having your own website and holiday rental portals and making use of the network of contacts of a well established villa management agency. The right mix can make it work for you, but none

of them by its self is the Holy Grail. If you have been relying only on one source for your bookings, there is a good chance that you have fewer bookings than hoped for. Some homeowners are reluctant to set an annual budget for the marketing of their home even though it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A budget of Euro 400 / 600 will be more than enough; in most cases this is less than a week of rent in high season. Not investing in the marketing of your home is a bit odd. Having spent a lot of money to buy your place in the sun, then fit it out with many desirable features and furnish it to a very high standard in keeping with its luxury surroundings, you basically have gone out of your way to make your property attractive to renters. Except you are not telling them! If you are marketing but are not getting the results you expected, there may be other reasons. Either there is something wrong with the

marketing mix or the pricing of your property. Sometimes simply changing the photos will do the trick. It is best to address this issue as soon a possible because a week of lost rental income will be lost forever, unlike the inventory in a bookstore which you can always sell or discount the very next day. have always enjoyed a glass or two of a good wine, and with a little time and effort you can produce the varieties of grape that matches the wines you enjoy. And within few years you can be producing your own wines, and even if you don’t want to make your own wines you can always take the grapes to a local council producer and they will be happy to take your grapes and return you some wine. This is very dependent on the number of grapes you produce, so if you only produce a few then you will need to brew your own. CHOOSE A TYPE OF GRAPE. As with any plant, certain types of grapes grow better in different areas

and offer up different flavours and appearances. There are three general types of grapes: American, European, and Muscatine grapes. American grapes grow best in warm, sunny climates like that of central California. European grapes are common in Europe and Northern parts of the US, and Muscatine grapes are commonly found in the Southern US. • Within each general type of grapevine, there are multiple species to choose from which each offer up their own flavour, colour, texture, and size. Visit a local nursery or market to find one that fits your needs and environment. • Select plants that look healthy and

strong, and are 1 year old. When possible, get them certified virus-free to ensure that their healthy growth is continued. • Look for plants that have an even root distribution, and whose canes are symmetrical. PREPARE YOUR OWN GRAPEVINE CUTTINGS. If you or a friend has another grapevine you’d like to plant from, you can take a cutting and plant it in a new location. To use your own cuttings: Cut the sections directly from the vine or from brush that has recently been pruned off. Make sure the cutting is 3 nodes long (the nodes will look like bumps). At the bottom of the cutting, make the cut at an angle.

This cut should be at 45 degrees and 1/4 to 1-inch above the node. • When taking cuttings, plant as many as possible - in as many locations as possible - to have a higher chance of success. Surplus plants can be given away. SELECT A SUITABLE LOCATION. Grapevines are long term plants that can live between 50 to 100 years. Therefore, make sure that the location you select is a permanent one that will offer up plenty of room for future grapevines. Grapevines thrive in sloped and hilly areas that offer up plenty of drainage and sunlight. When possible, plant your grapevines on a downward slope on a south-facing

hill, in an area clear of other trees and large plants. • In cold areas be sure to plant the grapevines in a sunny area, preferably facing south. A southern facing location may prevent frost nipping the vines. PREPARE THE SOIL. Grapevines are a bit picky about their soil conditions, so make sure they are just right before planting. Use soil that slightly rocky or sandy with a pH just above 7. Amend the soil to promote good drainage if necessary, as water-logged roots are not conducive to healthy growing grapevines. • Test the soil pH with an at-home kit to determine if anything needs to be added to or taken away from your soil

to prepare it for planting. • Although it may seem counterintuitive, grapevines do not like soil that is too nutrient-rich. Avoid heavily fertilized soil when possible, and ask a worker at a local nursery for tailored suggestions. PREPARE A TRELLIS FOR YOUR GRAPEVINES. Grapevines are, as the name implies, vine plants that grow upwards along a support structure. If you are not planting your grapes along a fence or other structure, construct or buy a trellis for them to grow along. This is typically a wooden structure made of intertwined boards that allow the vines to wrap around them, providing a sturdy support system.

Gardening • Latticed wood and wire can be purchased and attached to fence posts for an easy homemade trellis, if you don’t have the funds or ability to purchase or make your own. • Don’t use a single stake (as you might for tomato plants) as this won’t provide enough support for your vines once they start growing. KNOW WHEN TO PLANT. Wait to plant your grapevines until a frost-free day in late winter or early spring. Pruning should happen around this time in upcoming years as well. Contact your local agricultural service for exact planting dates PLANT YOUR GRAPEVINES. Depending on the species of grapes you are planting, spacing will be different for each plant. For American and European grapes, plant each vine 6–10 feet (1.8–3.0 m) apart. Muscatine’s require much more space, and should be planted approximately 16 feet (4.9 m) apart. Plant the cuttings in a trench with the basal and centre bud covered. The top bud should be just above the soil surface. Press the soil firmly around the newly planted grapevine cuttings. • How deep you plant the vines will depend on the age and size of each individual plant. Don’t bury the vine cane any higher than the first bud, but make sure the roots are completely covered in soil. GIVE YOUR PLANTS A GOOD WATERING. Grapevines don’t prefer heavy water or rain, so after the first watering keep the

amount of water you give them to a minimum. Keep water near the roots so that the majority of it gets absorbed rather than evaporated by the sun. If your area doesn’t get much rain, set up a drip system directly at the roots so that the grapevines get small amounts of water on a regular basis PRUNE YOUR GRAPEVINES. The first year, the grapevine should not be allowed to produce any fully matured fruits as these can damage the young vine with their weight. Cut back all the fruit, as well as all the vines except for the strongest that branch off the cane. In later years prune as needed following established local practices, and in older vines be sure to prune the vines back to around 90% of their wood. PRUNE VINES WHEN DORMANT. Always always prune grapevines when

they are dormant. They will otherwise bleed their sap - losing vigour. This is typically in late winter when it is no longer cold enough to frost outside. APPLY PEST CONTROL AS NEEDED. Little pest control is needed as grapevines are naturally hardy. Keep weeds at bay by hand-weeding on a regular basis, and cover you grapevines in bird net to keep birds away if necessary. Seek guidance from your local gardening club or agricultural extension on how to combat the Vine Moth. It is one of the few pests that can decimate grapevines. • Be sure to plant the grapevines so they receive enough airflow to prevent powdery mildew. • Aphids can be a problem for grapevines; ladybugs are a natural consumer of aphids and will not damage your vines further. HARVEST YOUR GRAPES WHEN APPROPRIATE. Strong, edible fruit likely won’t appear for anywhere from 1-3 years. When it appears, test its ripeness by picking a few grapes from different areas and tasting them. If the grapes are sweet, start picking as they ready for harvesting and eating. • Grapes will not continue to ripen after picking (as is the case with other fruits) so be sure not to pick them prematurely. • Colour and size are not necessarily a good indication of ripe fruit. Are You Affected By Changes To UK Bank Compensation Scheme?

D

o you keep large deposits in bank accounts? If so, you need to understand to what extent you will be protected in event of bank failure. For peace of mind you should establish what investor protection you have with your banks, and how it works. The same applies for capital you have in other financial institutions like investment firms, insurance companies etc in the event. If you have concerns about the level of protection, consider whether there are other institutions or structures which offer a higher level of protection. Within the EU, banks deposits up to €100,000 are protected. If a bank fails, any deposits you have up to this limit are refunded. In the UK, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme is based on the EU compensation scheme and is available to savers if a UK regulated bank or financial institution fails. At present, the limit per institution (i.e. across all accounts held with the same institution) is £85,000. This was based on the exchange rate at the time the €100,000 guarantee was introduced. Two changes to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme have now been announced. In July 2015, a new rule was introduced to protect savings of up to £1 million for a period of up to six months to cover ‘life events’, such as selling your home, inheritances, compensation payments etc; situations that could lead to you

having a temporarily high balance. From 1st January 2016, the standard protection amount is reducing to £75,000, because the exchange rate has changed. The UK regulators have to review the amount every five years to ensure the protection is similar to the rest of the EU. If you have more than £75,000 with a single institution, the excess over £75,000 is not protected. You may wish to consider reducing balances so these are spread to provide more protection. Those who have less than €100,000 with the same institution regulated elsewhere within the Eurozone are not affected, as the Euro amount has not changed. However if you have bank deposits over €100,000 you should consider ways to protect your savings from the risk of institutional failure. Since the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are not in the EU, banks which are regulated there are not covered by the EU scheme or the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme. These jurisdictions have their own compensation schemes, with a limit of £50,000. Besides spreading your deposits, you can move capital into alternate investment arrangements that provide a higher level of protection. For example Luxembourg offers a state controlled investor protection regime which provides maximum security to investors without limit. Also ensure you have adequate diversification across different investment assets, because this decreases risk as well as increasing

the potential for improved returns. Talk to a wealth management adviser to see if there are steps you can take to increase your investor protection, in line with your particular circumstances. Urban Rehabilitation: learn how to be exempt from the payment of IMI

f you are currently rehabilitating a home or may be looking to invest in a rehabilitation project, please know that you may qualify for exemption from IMI. Find out how it works and how you can you apply for this benefit. Recently the Portuguese Government extended the program "Reabilitar para arrendar” (Rehabilitation for Rent) which aims to create affordable housing for individuals and announced the Financial Instrument for the Rehabilitation and Urban Revitalization (IFRRU 2020), under the Portugal 2020 investment program. In recent years, urban renewal gained some tax benefits, including exemption from payment of IMI (Council Tax). There are two kind of IMI exemptions available, but these cannot be combined, so get to know these two benefits to choose what best suits your personal situation. IMI exemption for three years According to the law, urban buildings that have been object of urban rehabilitation are exempt from IMI for a period of three years following the year

of issuance of the respective city council license. "This exemption is dependent on recognition after completion of rehabilitation works and its urban and energy certification". It means that even though the period of exemption start in the year that the building permit is issued, it does not come into effect until the local authority has inspected the works and issued the respective habitation license and energy certificate. Once you have completed this process, the city council has 30 days to report the recognition of exemption to the Local Tax Office. The Tax Authorities have then 15 days to cancel the settlement of IMI and to refund the tax that has already been paid. IMI exemption for five years The law also provides exemption of IMI to buildings falling within the approved urban rehabilitation area (ARU), but whose works have already finished. Ie, the exemption begins in the year in which they conclude the works and depends on the resolution of the Municipal Assembly. This exemption is valid for five years following the year

in which the rehabilitation works is concluded, but can be renewed for a further five years. What is the urban rehabilitation area It is up to the municipal assembly to delimit the areas of urban renewal (ARU). The approval of an ARU gives the area a number of tax benefits associated with municipal taxes on wealth, the IMI and the property transfer tax (IMT). In Tavira for instance, the area of urban development and the Urban Renewal Strategy was defined in April 2014. Can I choose both incentives? No the law is quite clear: "The regime provided for in this Article is not cumulative with other tax benefits of a similar nature, not harming, however, opting for the most favorable". The Tax Authorities have clarified this, stating that "while operating at different times, because they are aimed at creating incentives for urban renewal, have the same nature, and therefore not cumulative." And if selling the property? If you sell the property the exemption remains. Exemptions "are granted in

Olhanense topple league leaders

A

new season started brightly with an entertaining 1-1 home draw against a lively Benfica ‘B’ team. Olhanense were one up at the interval through a beautifully crafted goal by new boy Leandro Borges following a defence splitting reverse pass by former Moncarapachense player Januário. The second-half was a different story with the Eagles drawing level thanks to a João Carvalho long range effort. Tiago Maia, in the home goal then became the hero with a string of superb saves which earned him the unusual accolade of being awarded a five star performance by the RECORD sports paper. Any goal bound shots he could not reach appeared to cannon off the woodwork as the Olhanense goal lead a charmed life! Footgolf attracts record entry

ootGolf is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide and the August Challenge Competition at the Colina Verde Golf & Sports Resort, Maragota, near Moncarapacho was no exception. A record entry of thirty-eight enjoyed much competitive fun as holidaymakers joined regulars over the twelve hole FootGolf course. Teenagers Adam Kennedy and Joe Roughley did particularly well with scores of 44 for the par-42 course. Gaynor Stapleton lead the ladies home with a round of 51 whilst he winning team of Scarlett Herron, Paul Shawe, Paul Holmes and Colm Herron scored a total of 186, just eighteen over par. First time participant Jane Walton from Tavira said, “Thank you for a wonderful day. I’ve not laughed so much for a long time even if I did get my feet wet retrieving my ball from the lake!” The next event is scheduled for Wednesday 23rd September. group of twenty-four bowlers from one of America’s top lawn bowls clubs will be competing against the Pedras Lawn Bowls Club on the morning of the 9th September. Thought to be the first visit by a club from the U.S.A. to the Algarve, the members of the Newport Harbor Lawn Bowls Club will be visiting Cabanas during a tour that takes in Lisbon, Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada and Madrid. On Saturday 3rd October bowlers from Bognor Regis, Eastbourne, Edinburgh and the Algarve will be competing at the same venue for prize money of up to €800.

The importance of a grip routine

W

hat is a good grip? Overlap or interlock, strong or weak, tightly or lightly. A good grip is the one which lets you hit the most good shots! Ben Hogan believed “Good golf begins with a good grip” and a faulty grip is one of the most common causes of bad golf teaching professionals see in amateurs. A neutral grip as seen in the inset picture with the 'V' formed by the index finger and thumb pointing towards the right shoulder is a good starting point for beginners. Grip is the predominant influence in clubface aim at

impact and could be one of the reasons for the ball to curve left or right of the target. When you have found the grip which allows you to hit the most good shots then doing this consistently is the next step. Incorporating a grip routine before you hit each shot will ensure it is the

same way with each swing. One of the easiest grip routine to follow is: 1 Get in an athletic golf posture. 2 Hold the club out in front of you at 90° to the ground with the clubface square to the target. 3 Now put your hands on the club ensuring when you set the club down on the ground the clubface remains square to the target.
