WEST AUSTIN STUDIO TOUR

MAY 19 & 20, 2012 Welcome to the first ever West Austin Studio Tour!

Just like its counterpart, the celebrated East Austin Studio Tour, WEST is a free, self-guided tour that champions the abundance of talent of Austin’s large and wildly diverse creative community. The public is invited to discover new artistic talent, see working studios, learn about artists' tools, techniques, and inspirations, and support the arts community by building their collections and supporting local businesses.

Have you looked at the map yet? As you may have noticed, WEST covers a wide geographical area; just as non-homogenous as Austin itself, the broad range of work reflects the eclectic abundance of artists working west of I-35. Additionally, a number of pop-up spaces are presenting art shows and events.

Before you hop on your velocipede to explore all that this inaugural WEST has to offer, please do keep in mind that most of the studios on the tour are located in residential neighborhoods, so it’s important to show the love to our WEST neighbors by not blocking driveways or leaving anything behind.

In fact, if you pick up anything wayward on the ground, you can help keep Austin weirdly beautiful.

WEST GROUP SHOW & INFO HUB

May 19 & 20, 11am – 6pm 241 W 3rd St Big Medium is hosting an ensemble of works from artists participating in the 2012 West Austin Studio Tour.

This group show includes work in all media and will provide a wonderful glimpse into what the rest of the tour has in store for you. Aron Taylor of the Rude Mechs will join us with his Quick Draw Photo Booth for a few hours each afternoon of the tour. Come by to get your most-awesome-ever "photos" drawn by hand in this quirky, creative photo booth unlike any other. The beautiful space at 241 W 3rd St is generously made possible by the great folks at The 2ND Street District.

The West Austin Studio Tour is organized and produced by Big Medium, the same folks who bring you the East Austin Studio Tour, the Texas Biennial, and innovative gallery programming throughout the year in the Big Medium Gallery and Project Space. Big Medium is an Austin-based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting visual arts and artists in Texas.

Deborah Lykins Photography For 5 years Deborah Lykins has been documenting Trick-or-Treators. Each October 31st, she sets up a studio in her driveway and photographs the kids that stop by. The portraits range from active, fun photographs to quiet moments of surprising depth. She has made hundreds of portraits in this ongoing project capturing the American cultural tradition surrounding Halloween and specifically the creativity and unique sensibilities of Austin’s youth.

Ben Appl Metal and ceramic sculpture, installation My work references parts from engineered systems, circuitry, and industrial architectural elements. Taking the familiar shapes out of context allows the viewer to examine the aesthetic and anthropomorphic qualities of these systems. The unconventional appearance and placement draws the viewer in for a closer examination and reveals an animated, gestural sculpture as well as illuminating the depth of the detail in the surface glaze and metal work.

I was basically the quirky asthma kid, so instead of gym class I was pushing pencil to paper, drawing my favorite cartoons for my buddies. My style today is a direct result of my obsession with cartoons like Ninja Turtles and that oozy sloppy cheese pizza, Ghostbusters & Slimer, Ren & Stimpy, and Beavis & Butthead. What started as pencil to paper ultimately led to brush and canvas and a whole new world of colors and textures emerged.

When I touch my brush to canvas, I tend to do it purely for the release of energies. These energies will come from dark places, places of light and hope, or maybe somewhere in between. The feelings I liberate with paper and paint may also develop from an infection of sorrow around me or an opposing bubble of joy from others close to me.

Ann was encouraged to explore her artistic talent from an early age. She received her BFA/ Studio Art from Texas State University and studied with Elizabeth Locke, Ian Roberts, Jennifer Balkan, Jill Carver, and Kim English. Ann paints expressionistically combining shape, tone, line, and color. Her preferred subject matter comes from daily life and how she can use that to explain the mysteries of emotion, memories, and identity.

My usual artistic vision has several strands: the humorous, strange natural juxtapositions, and a plea to notice the underdog. Sometimes all three strands appear in the same work. Any of these themes might erupt from cement and glass and odd bits of debris paired with tiny castoffs and treasures, or they might be smeared onto a surface with pastel or paint. My creations almost always start with mental reflection, rather than in action.

I have always been an enthusiast of humorous, perverse, and fantastic situations. I use fabric, found objects, and line drawings to work through the quandaries of life. My subjects are mostly relatives, mythological beasts, and ghosts, basking in their triumphant absurdity. The running themes include deliverance, isolation, and dalliance.

While I have been interested and involved with ceramics since high school, my professional career was in computers and architecture. After retiring in 2003, I built my studio and in 2005 I started making pots full time. I like to work with porcelain fired in some sort of atmospheric kiln conditions, such as wood, salt, or soda. My pieces are functional and usually thrown on a potter’s wheel. They tend to emphasize surface movement and texture.

Influenced by Eastern European iconography and Renaissance techniques, I use multiple layers of colored glazes to create a depth of skin tone and field, as if the people are speaking to us from another dimension.

We are manipulating nature while at the same time nature is overtaking our efforts. Within the often-personal imagery of empty pools, abandoned tree houses, and roaring waterfalls, I depict universal feelings of anxiety, containment, and the desire for control.

Her Painting, “Steppes of Mongolia,� showing here at WEST was selected as one of the finalists for the 2011 Hunting Art Prize. Only 100 out of 1600 entries were selected.

I strive to interpret the inherent vitality of nature. The tactile application of pastels allows an intimate involvement in the work, which I hope contributes to the sentiment a viewer experiences. My oil paintings are more tonal and reflect quieter, more harmonious moments.

North Village Branch North Village Library featuring works by Ellen Scott An artist her whole life, Ellen Turner Scott concentrated on 2-dimensional illustration and painting her early years. Employed by the Austin Public Library in the late 1970s, she began assisting the Children’sLibrarian with puppet shows where she discovered the potential of the 3-dimensional art form. She has been a freelance artist and a professional puppeteer for over 40 years in the public and private sector and owns a puppet media company.
