WEST AUSTIN STUDIO TOUR

MAY 19 & 20, 2012 Welcome to the first ever West Austin Studio Tour! Just like its counterpart, the celebrated East Austin Studio Tour, WEST is a free, self-guided tour that champions the abundance of talent of Austin’s large and wildly diverse creative community. The public is invited to discover new artistic talent, see working studios, learn about artists' tools, techniques, and inspirations, and support the arts community by building their collections and supporting local businesses.

Have you looked at the map yet? As you may have noticed, WEST covers a wide geographical area; just as non-homogenous as Austin itself, the broad range of work reflects the eclectic abundance of artists working west of I-35. Additionally, a number of pop-up spaces are presenting art shows and events. Before you hop on your velocipede to explore all that this inaugural WEST has to offer, please do keep in mind that most of the studios on the tour are located in residential neighborhoods, so it’s important to show the love to our WEST neighbors by not blocking driveways or leaving anything behind. In fact, if you pick up anything wayward on the ground, you can help keep Austin weirdly beautiful.

This catalog will give you an overview of everything and everyone on the tour. Our website is also full of information and further images for the artists on the tour, as well as printable maps. You can go wild and see every single stop on the tour, or go through the catalog and pick out all your favorites. Your WEST experience is up to you. We hope you’ll keep this catalog as a reference to artists and spaces you’d like to keep an eye on. Together with your East Austin Studio Tour catalog from last fall (you kept that, right?), you now have a really comprehensive set of guides to the Austin art scene.

All works represented in this magazine were reproduced with expressed permission from the artists. All text and images are copyrighted by each individual artist.

This project is funded and supported in part by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

Ben Appl Metal and ceramic sculpture, installation My work references parts from engineered systems, circuitry, and industrial architectural elements. Taking the familiar shapes out of context allows the viewer to examine the aesthetic and anthropomorphic qualities of these systems. The unconventional appearance and placement draws the viewer in for a closer examination and reveals an animated, gestural sculpture as well as illuminating the depth of the detail in the surface glaze and metal work.

Sara Vanderbeek Oil painting, drawing, printmaking My primary goal in painting people is to capture personality. I paint people largely because I am captivated by their endless emotional complexity, but also am in love with the physical life of paint. Sometimes, a painting may be inspired by something as simple as the shape and color of a friend’s hair; always, however, my subjects are chosen because of a personal connection that I wish to translate to canvas.

Painting when I was in my twenties consisted of how best to conceal my own ordinariness with a flashy and expressionistic gimmick. Being a part of someone’s intimate thoughts makes us feel like we are invading their privacy. The focus of my work is to lure the viewer to enter my forbidden territory. Each piece is meant to represent a certain time-frame in my life and I believe that unintentionally, I am the subject of all of my pieces. Working with large scale canvas represents the magnitude of emotions and desire that embodied me when I executed each painting.

Carolyn Kimball Printmaking, painting I create dreamy, layered landscapes that evoke the history and memory of place. My recent work is based on travels in the Middle East, where competing historical narratives and cultural memories shape modern life. These works portray a shared landscape, repeatedly divided, and the beauty of a land we often only hear about in terms of bloodshed. Beneath divisions of religion, culture and nationality, lies the common human experience.

Elizabeth Chapin Acrylic, watercolor, textile collage on canvas In painting, I enjoy exploring color and pattern, dimensionality and flatness, but mostly relish the psychology inherent in painting someone’s portrait, the narrative that always rises while getting to know a client and how that story continues while I work, as if the person were in the studio with me and we were carrying on an intimate conversation. I fall in love with some aspect of each person and that process feels benevolent and expansive.

I was basically the quirky asthma kid, so instead of gym class I was pushing pencil to paper, drawing my favorite cartoons for my buddies. My style today is a direct result of my obsession with cartoons like Ninja Turtles and that oozy sloppy cheese pizza, Ghostbusters & Slimer, Ren & Stimpy, and Beavis & Butthead. What started as pencil to paper ultimately led to brush and canvas and a whole new world of colors and textures emerged.

A.J. Simon Oil Painting, printmaking, assemblage I am a painter, printmaker, and assemblage artist. My paintings and prints are figurativeabstract. They come from observation/drawing of everyday things. Examples of objects abstracted from: shoes, shells, hats, and boats. These things transform into a vocabulary of shapes and forms. My latest work is with found objects which are glued to surfaces such as kitchen cupboards, and then painted or marked with paint sticks, graphite, and mixed media.

The common thread in my photography is a commitment to the medium of film, whether color or black-and-white, and an exploration of how original prints can be combined as raw material for my finished work – collaged, juxtaposed, layered, woven. When I touch my brush to canvas, I tend to do it purely for the release of energies. These energies will come from dark places, places of light and hope, or maybe somewhere in between. Encaustic, mixed media, sculptural ceramics Having always enjoyed the visual contrast between antiquity and modernism, I have recently combined my contemporary ceramic work with the ancient art form of encaustic painting. By incorporating ceramic masks into my artwork, I am attempting to illustrate the very diverse roles we all play in our lives. I hope my work, which is often whimsical in nature, will serve as a playful reminder to nurture the inner child within each of us.

exhibiting at Vuka Co-op

Painter David’s abstracted images include depictions of American culture, Industrialism, Capitalism, entrepreneurial spirit and the greatest symbol of our heritage, the American flag. His latest set abstracts the aging relics of the automobile industry, capturing the essence of what was once a thriving manufacturing industry as well as its recent downfall. His work proudly reflects the values and character that became the foundation of American Pride.

Christine Fail

With her BFA in studio art, designer Christine Fail’s background is firmly rooted in art and design. After 5 years working for two internationally renowned jewelry designers, selling to the country’s top retailers, and working directly with customers, Christine decided to realize her experience and expertise in her own vision. Schatzelein, her retail endeavor, is the first half of that vision and Fail Studios, her line of handmade jewelry, is the second.

I am drawn to objects and subject matter that reflect the feminine spirit. Frequently, I choose settings or views that depict a glimpse of a woman’s daily routine or personal attire. If the art evokes a response from the viewer, it’s likely to be one from personal experience - a time of day or special occasion. Once the memory is recalled, it becomes a shared experience with the artist - part of our collective feminine mythology.

By combining an external input of materials used with the internal output of my thoughts, emotions, symbols and images, I am able to give way to organic narratives and fluid-like imagery that coincide with the natural fluidity of living life in the moment. By using circles, blown ink, wood grain, dripping paint and organic forms while working in a spontaneous and subconscious manner, I showcase this fluidity by allowing the inner child to emerge.

Painting, drawing, sculpture My current work deals with renderings, or resolutions, of a subject that have been resolved both as digital and physical objects. Through my explorations, I’ve begun to see intellectual patterns emerging about the ‘truth’ of a subject. We have the ability to gain truth and meaning with more or less information than we’re normally presented with. My work explores how little I can get away with, yet still have the work be understood.

Oil on canvas, mixed media I work in an organic process that is a response to the world around me. Recently, that world has included cars and heavy equipment such as bulldozers and front loaders. Among my many influences are Romanesque sculpture, Mixtec art, and comic books. Most of my work is oil on canvas; lately I am using pen and ink with gesso, mostly on panels. If all goes well, each piece I do leads me to the next. I never stop looking and trying new things.

Maggie Kleinpeter Painting My paintings start with a thought, a memory, a sound or a dream. They make their way to the canvas through a process of painting patterns, shapes and color and creating space then covering parts up and bringing them back. This process repeats until the original impulse is realized and the painting is complete. My most recent paintings explore the relationship between the physicality of painting and memories of landscapes and sky.

This series I will display work ranging in diverse subjects such as The Black Dahlia, Video games, The Smiths, The Manson Family, Manchester (England), early Hip-Hop and British comic book heroes. Brigitte Edery Oil on canvas I’m constantly fascinated by how much color can reveal. My work is about the interplay of color becoming the dance of space, form and spirit. At best, my work expresses more than the individual sum of its parts and my models have commented how they’ve felt deeply seen. At worst, the work is contrived and over-thought. When the painting really works is when I’ve gotten out of the way and let go of the outcome. It’s like exhaling.

Often starting with a single brush stroke, affectionately called “dots, and using monochromatic oil paints and large scale canvases, I unveil a creative process that attempts to remove myself as the subject, in hopes of creating original artwork that offers an uncensored glimpse into the human mind.

Ann Seago

Ann was encouraged to explore her artistic talent from an early age. She received her BFA/ Studio Art from Texas State University and studied with Elizabeth Locke, Ian Roberts, Jennifer Balkan, Jill Carver, and Kim English. Ann paints expressionistically combining shape, tone, line, and color. Her preferred subject matter comes from daily life and how she can use that to explain the mysteries of emotion, memories, and identity.

I love Austin. It’s my atmosphere, my culture and my reality. During the 17 years I’ve lived here, the city has constantly evolved. My continuing focus of work centers on this theme through composite photography (layers of photos) to create epic alterations of Austin scenery - a symbolic representation of this ever-changing dynamic city.

Mixed media paintings I’m a husband, a father, an artist and a musician. I enjoy the sunlight and I like to paint pictures, too. My paintings are inspired by nature, architecture, progression, dreams, and the world that surrounds me. I always like to experiment with pushing and pulling layers upon layers without taking it too far. Making art is very therapeutic and necessary for me. I’m not sure where I would be without it.

W. Tucker Mixed media My work, whether constructed, painted, or collaged comes from an intuitive process - it is unplanned; there is no vision of the end in mind. I work predominately with my non-dominant hand. Simply put, this gets me “out of my head and allows me to draw/paint in an unpracticed manner, and brings the work a step closer to something unadulterated by the thinking mind.

Shakti Sarkin Painting Primal beauty captivates me. Wandering the woods as a child, I discovered hidden gems—sponge mushrooms, blossoms in every color, fuzzy antlers and rocks like hearts. My early exploration translated into using sumptuous paint to reveal the cloaked and overlooked, yet transcendent and natural magic around me, the ‘Shiny Objects’ tucked within ordinary existence. My paintings can often be distilled into the elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air.

Citizen Gershaw Mixed media Citzen Gershaw makes art because it’s fun. Part graphic designer and part conceptual artist, he works with ideas that challenge our definitions of objects and their meanings. Sure, a clock can tell time. But what else can it do? Citizen Gershaw divides and recombines objects including clocks, vinyl LPs, soup cans, and recycled tubing to make clever, dynamic, and kaleidoscopic designs that are fun to look at.

Glencliff Studio Mosaic, painting

My usual artistic vision has several strands: the humorous, strange natural juxtapositions, and a plea to notice the underdog. Sometimes all three strands appear in the same work. Any of these themes might erupt from cement and glass and odd bits of debris paired with tiny castoffs and treasures, or they might be smeared onto a surface with pastel or paint. My creations almost always start with mental reflection, rather than in action.

My art combines lettering, drawing and painting, one flowing into the other. Dreams and the unconscious influence my approach, which is intuitive & improvisational. A passion for nature and the repetitive lines I see within it-- tree branches, ripples in water, mountain ridges, in the curves of the human body--are further inspiration. In paintings, drawings, collages and unique artist books, I use my own words and personally designed scripts.

Anne Genung Painting, mixed media Anne Genung’s work is marked by graphic line use, concentrated color, and the allusion to both the traditional and the contemporary. Primarily working in oils, she paints on both canvas and found objects. Her work spans a host of subjects, including her series of color studies, portraits of Colonial Americans, and her recent mixed media Willie Nelson series. Juxtaposition is significant in her work. Also important is a sense of humor.

As a designer, it is Edson Enriquez’s play with empty spaces that give his work a sense of lightness and simplicity. It is his clean lines in the basic and organic shapes that define his style. Using the sensual qualities of oil, I create layered abstractions which explore the dynamics of color, line, and texture. I use brushes, palette knife, and/or mineral spirits to move the color. The paint and oil create jewels of sensual, layered, vibrant, color which move on the canvas. My process is one in which the artist and the paint are equal partners negotiating the surface of the canvas as if the paint had animate qualities.

My subjects are mostly relatives, mythological beasts, and ghosts, basking in their triumphant absurdity. The running themes include deliverance, isolation, and dalliance.

Carol Hayman Photography Color - it’s out there in the beauty of nature. Ephemeral flowers become eternal in a photograph, the essence of their beauty and light captured with a camera. I freeze them in time and embrace their color in deeply saturated hues. Turning them into eye-catching, decorative objects immortalizes them.

Painting Everyone has their own Island. Depending on the medium of course, our island could be a painting or an interactive sculpture. That is until the next piece is created, then it changes shape and form, becoming less of a gateway into the mind and more of a reference point. For Brandon White... his Island is called Chobra Island. It is a place unlike any other form of paradise. Sometimes accessible through time and space, other times not.

Oil and acrylic on canvas Thirty years of painting and exhibiting in Austin, and twenty-two of them have been in this studio in Clarksville. The teddy bears, the strange old mesquite outside the window- all of these have been in one painting after another. My two favorite subjects have always been people and my story-telling paintings based on children’s books, often with the backgrounds of Philadelphia or my mother’s home in Cornwall, England, but now I guess I’m here to stay.

It carries the weight of the “Good, Bad and the Ugly;” shooting my Texas Six Guns made me feel like a child once again, exploring uncharted territory. I first saw the female robot in the film “Metropolis” when I was ten and my life was changed forever. Also on view will be “Steamroller Madness”, large block prints by ACC printmaking students.

While I have been interested and involved with ceramics since high school, my professional career was in computers and architecture. After retiring in 2003, I built my studio and in 2005 I started making pots full time. I like to work with porcelain fired in some sort of atmospheric kiln conditions, such as wood, salt, or soda. My pieces are functional and usually thrown on a potter’s wheel. They tend to emphasize surface movement and texture.

I am happiest when I am creating art - and the brighter the color, the better! As an outdoor enthusiast, I often find inspiration from Mother Nature, who has the best style sense of anyone I know. Clay is my medium of choice and it allows me to combine design with function. Recently, I’ve been exploring silk screening and decals. Who knows what’s next? And that suits me perfectly since variety IS the spice of life.

David Bjurstrom Drawings in graphite pencil Taking the medium of graphite pencil to a place it has never been, my drawings are done in a very detailed, realistic style. Approached as painting rather than drawing and less about “line” than about light, shadow and texture. Often said to “look like photographs,” they go far beyond that with a clarity of subject not possible in a photo and an undefined quality to awaken an emotional response. Experiencing the ordinary in extraordinary ways.

My paintings are memorbuchs about relationships, efforts at exploring intimacy and documenting wonder, layered often as not upon the bones of other paintings. I integrate and contrast the human form with environments and architectures, weaving stylistically through magical realism and collaged abstraction toward a kind of theatrical realism. Most of it is the ephemera of daily life, records of our actions and interactions. I use a lot of photographs, too. Linda Dumont

Creating Art is food for my soul. It is the focus of my life for the past 30 years. Creating is not always easy, but the process gives me a grand sense of accomplishment where it takes me is a wonderful mystery, even if the viewer only sees the end result. Each new work is inspired by my inner landscape, uses all my senses, and a history of landscapes, portraits, and my own fantasy world.

Annie Bradley Sculpture, theatre, music, painting, drawing I work in the realms of the absurd. My work is based of contemporary techniques encompassing movements such as DADA, Surrealism and Expressionism. It has been said by critics to be masculine with an odd sense of feminism associated with it. Utilizing organic materials such as orange peels and hair in a sort of human taxidermy. A recipient of many awards and participated in local exhibitions including Arthouse at the Jones Center NAT 24.

Oliver Mansfield-Paradis Painting My paintings are an examination of hue, texture, coruscation, and stratum. I regard each new piece as a dimensional, physical object and strive for compositions which vibrate between microscopic and monumental scale. Vigorously sculptural grounds establish the fundamental form; subsequent layering satiates both the visceral/impulsive self and the calculated/ scientific self. Once the work evokes a sense of sentimentality, it feels complete.

Drawing, printmaking, sculptural works In my own art practice, I am constantly searching for fresh voices in my work to reveal truths of the human condition, conscious of the futility and troubling vanity of living one’s life selfishly, and entirely for the moment. There is wisdom in finding reasons to leave this world a better place. Great art is far more than an array of visual facts, but is borne from rigorous articulate conversation between the eye, the mind, and the heart.

Oil paintings, watercolors, painting, drawing Taking the art and imagery of the rural romantic imperial India that has been trapped in and stymied by the west, I break it free by compounding it with the the anxiety, uncertainty, hope, and golden dreams of today’s generation. My artworks come from a melting pot of traditional Indian miniature painting, Indian textiles, the vibrancy of western pop art, and the architecture of ancient civilizations.

Clare Townes Oil paint My ideas for paintings are formed in a variety of ways, including photos, movie scenes, real life, and my imagination. Most recently, I have been focusing on still-life setups in my studio. I enjoy the way that a painting can push an everyday object or scene into a realm of beauty, mystery, or wonder, through the artist’s interpretation. Regardless of their varied characteristics, I want my paintings to be personal, intimate, and sincere.

Kristie Zamrazil Oil painting, mixed media I paint portraits to show the wisdom gained from adversity and loss – or to foreshadow challenges yet to come – and the grace such experience bestows to others. Influenced by Eastern European iconography and Renaissance techniques, I use multiple layers of colored glazes to create a depth of skin tone and field, as if the people are speaking to us from another dimension.

Sonya Berg Painting, drawing My work is symbolic of the state of contemporary American landscape and my feelings of our relationship with the environment. We are manipulating nature while at the same time nature is overtaking our efforts. Within the often-personal imagery of empty pools, abandoned tree houses, and roaring waterfalls, I depict universal feelings of anxiety, containment, and the desire for control.

Bethany Johnson Drawing My studio is part artistic workspace, part laboratory. In all of my work, I merge my personal, aesthetic experience with systematic, scientific methods in pursuit of a holistic comprehension of my natural subjects. This approach reflects my impulse to both understand my environment in the most conventionally factual way, while simultaneously embracing its hopeless (but profound and poetic) complexity, subjectivity and obscurity.

Mixed media painting, sculpture I strive to progressively regress. I believe spontaneity is an essential aspect of making art. I am drawn to the primitive and naive quality of folk art and the artwork of children. Their direct and bold approach is fresh and honest. I wish to capture that kind of energy in each of my works.

After practicing law for seven years, I decided to pursue a career in visual arts. main categories of work (although I often paint things that fall outside of these when the mood strikes me). The first is my “Tree of Life collection. My trees are an abstract manner with intricate detail. My second category of painting is a fun of work based on El Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead).

Abstract collage created by using my own handmade papers, vintage papers and fabrics layered with washes of acrylic and my own stamped and stained papers. I love the combination of old materials in a modern composition.

Painting When I make art I try to stay excited and hopeful and happy! Over the years I’ve developed a process of allowing my work the freedom to evolve. This process inspires me to confront the challenges of art making and helps me to stay engaged with the work from start to finish. The excitement, energy and happiness that I experience while working is something I hope transmits to you, the viewer.

My paintings are representational rather than literal. That means a realistic but stylized ideology of a scene that evokes a mood at a particular moment in time. I strive to interpret the inherent vitality of nature. The tactile application of pastels allows an intimate involvement in the work, which I hope contributes to the sentiment a viewer experiences. My oil paintings are more tonal and reflect quieter, more harmonious moments.

Jerry Hayes Photography, painted photographs While I was not born in Austin, I’ve have been lucky to be able to live here since 1978. And even in 1978 people would say, “you should of see how Austin looked back in previous years.” So one of my current projects is documenting this city’s ever changing skyline through photography. In addition to standard photography I also enjoy digital painted photographs.
