4 ARTISTS & STUDIOS WOOTEN

Oil painting, pastel, collage I have been painting in my 600 square foot, backyard studio for over 10 years. I will have over 100 works of art to view as well as the studio and my beautiful yard. The entire property is truly a work of art in itself, including two ponds, a greenhouse, extensive stone and tile work, 1940’s era cottage, chicken coop and yard, flowers and plants. I will have refreshments on hand. Art, art, and more art.

Carmen Canann . CarmenCanCreate Painting, photographs, plants My artistic influences sprang from living in California, Hawaii, and Texas, and by trips to Mexico where I acquired a fascination for bright colors, tropical plants, and tiles. My grandfather had an art studio behind his turquoise stucco house in Santa Monica where cousins and I played with flower petals and painted pictures. Now I work with paint, photography, and plants from my own art studio looking out onto the garden behind our house in Austin.

Interdisciplinary My work is marked by an exploration of rural/urban life, moment, time, development & social infrastructure. I work with a multitude of techniques and materials with found objects that result to mixed media painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography, sound, and performance. I produce works that explore the personal and the universal, that investigate the invisible systems of power that govern everyday existence and that instigate debate. 305 Blackson Ave . Cliona Gunter Painting, collage, mechanical assemblies I try not to control how I work. I enjoy exploring ideas and materials. Often pieces are influenced by strong emotions or a discovery about a relationship situation I am becoming aware of. Some pieces come from a funny idea or phrase that popped into my head. Some pieces come from dreams. Some pieces come from things I found on the side of the road. I paint every morning and then go to my paid work.

Oil painting, mixed media I paint portraits to show the wisdom gained from adversity and loss – or to foreshadow challenges yet to come – and the grace such experience bestows to others. Influenced by Eastern European iconography and Renaissance techniques, I use multiple layers of colored glazes to create a depth of skin tone and field, as if the people are speaking to us from another dimension.

Jewelry Art moves me, ignites an emotional reaction. When I finish a piece, I feel complete. I fabricate the sheet silver, cut and polish the gemstones. Creation is a triumph of balance. Too little heat will not forge a connection. Too much will melt the silver. The spiritual effect of stones is well documented. Many of my pieces include turquoise because it feels right to me. Each piece is different, just as all of us are different. That’s art. 1819 Piedmont Ave . (512) 913-3555 . rhodesm1@swbell.net

Clav Khairallah Mixed media It’s been a fun year! I started a new series of paintings - combining Day of the Dead with famous people/paintings/icons. So far I’ve completed American Gothic, Andy Warhol, Marylin Monroe, the 4 Ballerinas from Swan Lake and Marylin Monroe on the subway vent from “The Seven Year Itch”. I am currently working on the inside cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I also added 3 new tree paintings to my already big collection.

Painting The sometimes violent, sometimes serene unknotting of memory, idea, experience - conscious or unconscious - urges me to paint. Color, form, and movement presuppose composition. I am led internally to create externally. I’m fascinated by the center, the beingness, the unfolding of the core, and how best to express that in painting. Also on display will be some of my sculptural works in clay.

Acrylic, collage, drawing Jan Knox works in mixed water-based media on both canvas and paper. She paints with acrylic, ink, colored pencils, collage, and occasionally works in oil on ampersand board. Melanie Hickerson Painting, drawing Ms. Hickerson’s imagery expresses an internal reality in this world of illusions. The bucolic settings, colorful portraits, or other standard fare are decorated with visual touches of something else. Ms. Hickerson’s imagery has expressed the arc of the female aspect in art, the earth, environment, and spirituality. But my paintings are paintings FIRST. They are form and color.

Laura Latimer Mixed media, sculpture, photography Grounded in a background of public and gallery installation work using unconventional materials, Laura’s small-scale pieces continue to explore the interaction of form with space through mixed media practices. Layers, light, and pattern are the basic elements used to express both narrative and conceptual subject matter. Energy and matter meld into elemental forms of a personal language of artistic communication.

14b ARTISTS & STUDIOS ALLANDALE

Mixed media, painting, printmaking Emilio Villarruel uses the multiple techniques of printmaking, image transfer, collage, painting, and drawing to create visual opinions of our popular culture – both past and present. Bold, abstract imagery often disguises underlying social criticism. These interpretations of events, which he feels are essential for us to remember, serve as his “offspring” or a legacy of visual bookmarks in the pages of history.

Amanda Yopp

16a ARTISTS & STUDIOS ALLANDALE

Acrylic paintings, prints, pottery I’ve always been interested in systems: interdependent parts working together to create a whole. A system has structure and behavior, and it tells a story. It might be the relationship between two people or the inner workings of a family. In my latest work, a series on machines, I am taking a more literal approach. Just like a family, some of my machines are playful but nonsensical. Some are dangerous. And some are broken and useless. 6901 Shoal Creek Blvd . amandayopp.com

Drawing My work represents my pursuit of a holistic type of knowledge, composed of the complimentary truths of science, art, poetry, mathematics, and philosophy. I translate informational images (like maps, diagrams and scientific documentation) by hand to transform the conventionally factual source into a more poetic, abstract, open statement about the world around us.

Cecelia Phillips Evans . guest of Bethany Johnson Painting, drawing Several months ago I met a woman who was straightening my hair. It happened to be her birthday, and she was going hunting for geodes to celebrate. No shit, I said. I’ll make you a geode painting as a present. As I began to explore the subject matter of a geode, I realized that they embody a lot of who I am and what I believe in artistically-a little bit of kitsch, a smidge of bling, a little crusty on the outside and gleaming from within.

Sonya Berg Photography, painting My recent work is a combination of photographs and paint to create alluring but disruptive visual space. I remove the context of my snapshots to create abstracted windows of color and space. I look to create visual splits, juxtaposing depth and flatness, and recognizable space and abstraction. Through tactile contrast of surface and sheen, I look to invoke curiosity and confusion in the physical manipulation of the reference image.

Christopher Owen . guest of Patricia Meheriuk Photography My images depict the detritus of life and the aging of objects. I focus on forgotten houses and signs, old toys, dead trees, and discarded items. I use ink and water colors in an attempts to capture the feeling from these moments. I have been inspired by Dr. Seuss and his wonderful world. Here is a glimps in to my world. I hope you enjoy.

Padaric Kolander Oil, acrylic, charcoal, pen, ink I’m drawn to the human figure, and while some examples of my work resemble portraits, there is rarely a specific person I am depicting. Open-ended themes of ignorance, contradiction, sarcasm and cynicism run through my work. These themes are the true subjects.

Tim High . Terra Rosa Studio Drawing, printmaking, painting, mixed media sculpture Great art requires far more from its maker than an orderly catalog of visual facts, be they real or imagined, but instead is borne out of an articulate and impassioned conversation between the eye, the intellect, and the heart. Though I am an avid believer in subtlety, elusivity, and nuance, I prefer art to be decisively clear about what it has to impart to me. I have always preferred not to dive head first into muddy water.

Mixed media, painting My artistic process is a cathartic one. It’s a way for me to cleanse myself of anxiety, let my imagination run wild, play with possibility, renew my spiritual ideals, explore relationships, and gain insight into my own unconscious drives, fears, and impulses. I lose myself in the process; I find myself, again and again, in the product.

Chris Evans at Austin Public Library - Yarborough Photography I am interested in the ethical implications of photographic portraiture. We are always looking at each other, it is part of who we are. However, this process of looking becomes questionable with the introduction of a camera. The implication of the interaction is inevitably changed: the moment is captured, made permanent, and infinitely reproducible.

Painting The trees around Austin inspire my most recent series. I see each tree as having a distinct personality, which informs the composition and color choices. The works are done in acrylic on panel. I paint in thin layers and use found objects (e.g. cloth, combs, sticks) to lift out or scratch in patterns. The images have a gauzy translucency that feels a bit like watercolor while the palate, in contrast, is jarringly bright and saturated. 4104 Avenue H . From the darkest dark to the palest pale, she follows the light, knowing that without it, there would be nothing—no contrast, no shadow, no line, no shape, no form, no texture, no color. Her exploration of black and white brings to mind the phrase “opposites attract.” Perhaps a paradox draws her, forever grateful, to the light that lets her see.

I strive to create moments in time with feeling and humor (stiff cats, pointed heads or slightly absurd events). I also do pet portraits and commissions. I can’t wait to see the wonderful people I’ve met during the last two EAST tours and hopefully find some new friends and clients. Please come visit me! 1709 Palma Plaza . Kate Csillagi . The Roost Painting, found object assembly I am captivated by the internal narratives we carry around on our backs and in our guts. Our collective stories, braided and knotted together, compose a lively and complex backdrop. Through found object sculpture and watercolor exploration, my latest work focuses on consumption, emotional jungles, and the holographic universe.

Jewelry My latest line of jewelry, Bee Amour, is inspired by the shapes, textures, colors and energy that I see every time I inspect my bee hive. Beekeeping is a craft that I have been learning over the past 3 years which has become something of an obsession that now translates into my work as a designer. I aim to create elegant and unique jewelry that is both well made and comfortable to wear.

David Mercado at Zocalo Mixed media, painting With series that focus on the beauty, strength, and movement of hummingbirds as well as bold, vibrant, and contemporary landscapes, David’s work is vivid and unique. It’s the striking imagery of his “Guadalupe” series, however, that gives a profoundly intimate glimpse into the faith and heritage which have inspired him. The series reveals an incredible transformation of traditional, iconic imagery into complex, abstract and contemporary pieces.

Carol Hayman Photography, prints I take an anthropological approach to photography. My subjects are people and landscapes in many parts of the world and include globalization and its effects on their lives. I turn my photographs into fine art prints by making them into etchings using solar plates and an intaglio press. The work is inherently ambiguous with a mysterious quality. Turning photographs into fine art prints is a laborious but satisfying printmaking process.

Painting My art emerges in a dark room on a huge glass table, underlit by soft light. Dreams make powerful pictures of a woman on adventures with her dog companions. The negative space is as alluring as the positive. On thin translucent cloth, the image is fleshed out with terracotta washes and markers. The muted colors enhance the inner world depicted. My goal is to capture attention by a space that becomes a doorway to a meditative state. 1001 Eason St . (512) 477-3099 . btimko@aol.com

Brandon White . guest of Carol Hayman Painting This alternative reading of the land becomes a bizarre projection of a post-apocalyptic future-scape as the works imagine a recovery from a nuclear blast. Phillip Wade Oil, acrylic on canvas All I ever wanted as a teenager prowling the Metropolitan Museum or as an art student in Philadelphia and the U of Texas was to have all day to paint. Painting on canvas, recycled material Mary loves being creative. She paints her passions into each piece: influential people, Italy (she lived there!) and the beach where she grew up. Her most recent development is painting on recycled material: broken guitars, vintage projector screens, old flooring, scrap wood, skateboards, etc. She also has helped start a company called Reclaimed Austin, where salvaged furniture becomes inspired design. Valerie Walden at Capital Fine Art Oil, pastel My paintings are representational rather than literal. That means a realistic but stylized ideology of a scene that evokes a mood at a particular moment in time. I strive to interpret the inherent vitality of nature. The tactile application of pastels allows an intimate involvement in the work, which I hope contributes to the sentiment a viewer experiences. My oil paintings are more tonal and reflect quieter, more harmonious moments.

Mixed media I enjoy creating characters, spinning narratives and referencing myths. My process involves adhering fabric, paper and paint to wood panels, then sanding through the layers to reveal colors and textures. Dream imagery and memories often surface; they collide with the original narrative and create new meaning. This discovery is what continues to fascinate me each time I pick up a paintbrush.

I choose images based on what I enjoy looking at. When deciding on my next work, I try to analyze what inspires designers and stylists, as well as the minds of underground fashion bloggers. I like the idea of moving away from conceptual art, and just creating for the sake of having an aesthetically pleasing work of art.

Painting, assemblage, printmaking I am a painter, printmaker, and assemblage artist. My paintings and prints are figurative-abstract. They come from observation/drawing of everyday things. Examples of objects abstracted from: shoes, shells, hats, and boats. These things transform into a vocabulary of shapes and forms. My latest work is with found objects which are glued to surfaces such as kitchen cupboards, and then painted or marked with paint sticks, graphite, and mixed media. 515 Pecan Grove Rd, Apt B, Studio in back . a.j.simonartist@gmail.com . ajsimonartist.com

My recent work is based on travels in the Middle East, where competing historical narratives and cultural memories shape modern life. Beneath the divisions of religion, culture, or nationality that we construct lies the common human experience.

AND FINALLY...A VERY SPECIAL THANKS... TO YOU! If you are holding this book, that means you made an important contribution to Big Medium and the art community of Austin. We are proud to have your support! As a non-profit organization, we value the inclusive nature of our programming and strive to make the studio tours accessible to all members of the community. The East Austin Studio Tour has grown exponentially over the past ten years, and now WEST is following suit, with a significant increase in participants from its inaugural year. We are truly grateful to our past and current supporters, whose contributions continue to be the key to the growth and success of our arts community. We hope WEST tour participants, tour goers and catalog enthusiasts will see purchasing the tour catalogs as an opportunity to support Big Medium and Austin’s growing art community. Big Medium is thankful for support at every level to help sustain our programming, including Big Medium Gallery exhibitions, the East Austin Studio Tour, the West Austin Studio Tour, and the Texas Biennial. Please visit bigmedium.org to learn more about how you can support the arts. Thank you!
