Thanks to contributions from our community, Big Medium is able to provide a Fellowship Program for artists. Through this growing program, scholarships toward West participation fees are awarded to artists based on need and merit. Our hope is to encourage participation from artists experiencing financial limitations, as well as reward creatives that demonstrate artistic accomplishment.

Big Medium relies on community support to produce West, provide artists with Fellowships, and keep our programming free to the public. We invite you to join us in supporting Austin’s creative community by contributing to Big Medium.

This year, Big Medium provided $4,834 in full or partial financial support to 42 West artists.

Changarritto with Lys Santamaria Mexic-Arte Museum

West Weekends – 12-3pm Lys Santamaria was born in Colombia and raised in both Canada and the United States. Her beadwork is primarily inspired by her travels abroad and by influential women in her life. She enjoys using traditional beading techniques that reflect her cultural background. The repetitive motion of her work allows her time to meditate and each bead is woven with intention. Changarrito is an art vending cart, conceptualized by artist Maximo Gonzalez as an alternative to the official gallery selection presented by the Mexican cultural authorities. Faithful to their original, informal spirit, Changarritos exist throughout the world, evolving as forums for the sale of original artwork to the general public, presentation of public programs, special curatorial projects, individual and collective exhibitions. 501 Congress Ave – (512) 480-9373 info@mexic-artemuseum.org – mexic-artemuseum.org

19. Neena Buxani – Austin ArtSpace Gallery & Studios Acrylic, gouache My work attempts to create a notion of strength through the use of daring color and inviting texture. When a viewer must resist the urge to touch a piece because she simply wants to experience its energy, I have achieved some success. When the artwork continues to impact the viewer causing her to examine it whilst sensing joy, excitement and wonder, I have achieved my intention as an artist. 21. Mare Kretschmar – Austin ArtSpace Gallery & Studios Acrylic on canvas I paint a very focused subject matter but the surrounding area around my subject takes on a wonderful abstract theme. I have a general idea of what the background will look like, but it can change during the actual rendering. It’s what I see in that moment in the background. Eventually, it reveals itself to me. Sterling silver, gold jewelry Julie Konvicka was standing on a street in Toulouse, France when she realized it was time to leave the fear and loathing of high tech. Driven to learn the equation of form and balance brought by fire and forged metal she honed her skills in Recife, Brazil and later Austin, Texas. Mostly glass Each piece begins with a spark - evolving through a process of analytical evaluation, thoughts, questions and emotions. Colors, transparency and texture of glass provide me with the language to create an object that is one with its reflections and shadows - stirring the beholder - a moment of surprise, a pause of joy, a memory, an idea - carrying on creativity by prompting the viewer. Oil and urethane on canvas, hemp canvas, and plywood In painting I’ve found the opportunity to create a world that fuses the literal with the ephemeral, nature and human nature, plants and animals, the macro to the micro; when I paint shapes, with lines or with poured paint, I often seek to mimic forms I know from the human body and the natural world in combinations that evoke a primal familiarity. 313. Lee Ross – Back Painted Glass Studio 103 Back painted glass I am a visual artist who is interested in nontraditional applications of acrylic painting. Currently my work is painting on the back of glass with acrylic paints. To work directly on glass, the composition needs to be reversed, and the order of the layering is switched; from bottom/back to front/top. All images are lit from the front unleashing, the “life” in the paintings. Artist Studio 820 Shelby Ln, Unit #103 – innerliteart@gmail.com innerliteart.com Accessibility: 6

Oil, acrylic, ink At once playful and unsettling, these diminutive paintings are metaphors for questions about life: what we see and what we know. 322. Ann Alva Wieding – Austin Art Refugees Sound:Vision – Space Rehearsal & Recording Photography, collage I am a photographer that is captivated by the patterns that emanate from nature. I strive to capture and display the visual drama that is the interplay between light and color. I focus my lens on a moment in time where the light emanating from the Sun and the Moon may never be the same again. I then printed on metal in order to share the radiance of the light from that moment with the viewer.
