It is a plan that has been in the works
for nine years...and officials with Alameda County are almost ready to unveil an ambitious plan to remove and relocate billboards across the county. “Back in 2006, there were lot of conversations which happened in Castro Valley among people wanting to do something about billboards,” explained County Community Development Agency Director, Eileen Dalton. The goal of the regulation is to reduce billboards in the Unincorporated Areas of the county by half. There are currently 60 county wide, with 11 on Castro Valley Boulevard. Part of the plan is to remove billboards from main thoroughfares and have them replaced on highways. County officials are still in negotiations with billboard companies CBS and ClearChannel to determine the number of new

billboards that will replace ones removed. Dalton told CVN she hopes a finalized plan will go before the public at a Planning Commission meeting within the next few months. CBS and ClearChannel pay property owners leasing fees at each billaboard location. Dalton says both companies and property owners have been positive during regulation drafting negotiations. There will be an evaluation analysis into what each billboard is worth depending on location and size, and each replacement will undergo a county SDR (site development review) during a public hearing at the Planning Commission. “We have been working on this for quite some time and received a lot of input on this. Most people feel something should be done about billboards,” Dalton added.
