Steven Contente, Town Administrator July 2017 Greetings Fellow Residents and Visitors, It is with great pride and excitement that I am able to help champion the town of Bristol’s Independence Day Celebration. The Bristol Fourth of July parade, a tradition that began in 1785, demonstrates the sprit and commitment to our nation’s values.

This event proudly showcases our respected military, civic organizations and cultural groups, and includes marching bands from across our nation. The town of Bristol is a perfect setting with its wide streets, mature trees, notably significant buildings and well-maintained homes.

Our historic waterfront is an inspiring setting for the evening Independence Day Concert Series.

Bristol has long been known to be a strong community where people come to work, raise their families, and answer the call for service when needed. The Bristol Fourth of July Celebration is the time of year for a proud community to be joyful and to observe and honor what I believe is the best in America.

I wish to thank all of those who make this celebration possible, especially the volunteers of the Fourth of July Committee for guarding and keeping these esteemed traditions for future generations.To my fellow residents, congratulations, and to our visitors, welcome to Bristol.

Dear Bristol Residents and Visitors: It doesn't seem possible that the Fourth of July, our nation's celebration oflndependence Day, is just a few short weeks away. This year will be our beautiful Town's 232nd celebration!

Everyone who lives in Bristol is extremely proud of this amazing tradition. We take very seriously the fact that we host the oldest, continuous Fourth of July celebration in the country.

I would like to congratulate this year's Chief Marshals, Lisa Sienkiewicz and Gail Parella, on this well-deserved honor. It is my hope that you and your families and friends will enjoy an experience that you will never forget. I look forward to joining you and your families at all of this year's festivities.

I would like to thank all of the men and women who have served and who are currently serving in our nation's Armed Forces. Without each of you, we would not be able to enjoy the independence that we all know and love. Let us never forget the men and women who paid the ultimate price so that we could live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I would be remiss if I did not thank the men and women of the Bristol Police Department, Bristol Fire Department and Division of Emergency Medical Services, the Department of Public Works, our Town Administrator, and the members of our Town Council for all that they do to make our Celebration run as smoothly as it does.

Finally, I would like to thank Fran O'Donnell, Dudley Hallagan, Deb Rainey, and Maria Ferreira for being the best team of officers that I would have the pleasure of serving with these past two years. I would also like to thank all of the members of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee for their hard work and dedication to the Committee. Without each and every one of these individuals, this Celebration would never be possible.

To all of our residents and visitors, please join us at all of our upcoming events leading up to the grand finale, the Fourth of July Parade. During these upcoming weeks, please visit our local restaurants, shops, historical sites, and galleries which are an essential part of our beautiful Town. For the first time in the long, storied history of the Bristol Fourth of July Celebration, sisters will be leading the way down the famed red, white and blue-striped parade route the morning of the Fourth.

Lisa Sienkiewicz and Gail Parella, daughters of the late Gilbert and Sarah Almeida, were selected to be Chief Marshals this year by Fourth of July Committee Chairwoman Donna Falcoa. When they were announced on April 12 as this year’s honorees, the applause they received was deafening.

As one might expect, both ladies, co-owners of Gil’s Applicances, were overwhelmed when they got the call from Ms. Falcoa about being this year’s celebration Chief Marshals.

“We were totally surprised,” Ms. Sienkiewicz said. “We do better behind the scenes instead of in front of it. We have always tried to give back to the community any way we can.”

Lisa and Gail come from solid ethnic backgrounds. Their dad, Gilbert Almeida, was born and raised in Fall River, and was proud of his Portuguese heritage. His mother was from Faial, and his father was also born in the Azores. Gilbert was also very business-minded.

Meanwhile, Lisa and Gail’s mother, the former Sarah Pirri, came from a family of strict Italians, whose grocery store business on Bourne Street flourished for many years.

They knew how to make a dollar, and sweated for every cent they earned. The girls’ grandparents, Jennie and Frank Pirri, were from Genoa and Sicily, respectively.

Lisa and Gail took their cue from their parents, whose local business, Gil’s Music Store (many people bought their first records there), began in 1961, at the corner of Wood and Congregational streets.

The business later became Gil’s Television & Appliances and relocated to its present Bristol location on Metacom Avenue. It was a foregone conclusion that Lisa and Gail would eventually take control of the business. And take control they did,

with all of the gusto and ingenuity befitting siblings who have a nose for business.

These well-respected sisters earned their own solid reputation the same way as mom and dad .. through hard work and determination.

Lisa Sienkiewicz, who recently turned 52, is a 1983 graduate of Our Lady of Fatima High School, and resides in Bristol with her husband, Frank. They will be married 27 years this November. They also have two children, Sarah, a senior at Northeastern University, and Alex, a fifth form student at Portsmouth Abbey.

Ms. Sienkiewicz has been widely known for her volunteerism. She is a member of 100 Women Who Care RI, a current member of the Gordon School Heads Advisory Council, a class parent coordinator for Portsmouth Abbey Fifth Form, and a lector at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She formerly served as Gordon Community Association co-president, Gordon Centennial Celebration co-president, and is a past member of the Gordon School Finance Committee.

Ms. Sienkiewicz has always been big when it comes to the Fourth of July. She is a past member of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee, serving in a number of capacities, including past corresponding secretary and past chairman of the Miss Fourth of July Pageant Committee.

She is also a member of the East Bay and Newport Chambers of Commerce, and has been involved running her family’s business for the past 34 years.

Like her sister, Gail Parella has led by example. She graduated from Bishop Connelly High School in 1987, and graduated from Rhode Island College in 1991. She grew up in Bristol and lives in town with her husband, Joseph Parella. They’ve been married for 17 years. The couple has three sons, Peter, a student at Portsmouth Abbey, Joseph and Matthew, both students at St. Philomena’s School in Portsmouth.

Ms. Parella has been a longtime volunteer in the community and at her children’s schools. She has held positions such as co-chair for the St. Philomena School Fundraising Auction in 2011 and 2012, as well as head room parent for multiple classes at St. Philomena School, coordinating activities and parties for the children.

She is a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a member of the Sons of Italy, and a parent volunteer for the Bristol King Philip Little League. In addition, she and her husband co-chaired the Catholic Charity Fund Appeal.

Ms. Parella began her professional career in retail in 1991 as a sales manager for Express. In 1996, she gravitated back to her family’s business, where she has remained for 21 years. She is a member of both the East Bay and Newport Chambers of Commerce.

In 1995, the sisters officially took over the business from their parents and have raised their own families within the walls of their family store.

On March 28 of last year, they opened a second store on Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. To say their know-how and proficiency in the business world has exceeded expectations is a gross understatement.

Nowadays, Lisa and Gail continue to do whatever they can to help others. They are selfless when it comes to volunteering. They’ll do whatever they can for whomever they can.

From corporate sponsorship of local Little League baseball teams, festivals, food and toy drives, and the Bristol Fourth of July Concert Series, to financial and product donations for school organizations, community groups and local churches. These ladies are truly a pillar of the Bristol community.

With the big Fourth of July Parade on the horizon, Lisa and Gail will take center stage down the parade route as countless family members and friends wave and cheer them on.

(with his sister, Mary Parella, in 1995), gave the girls some sensible advice. “I told them to enjoy every minute of it,” he said. “It goes by so fast.”

Good friend Kathleen Bazinet took it a step further, remarking about the girls’ parents in a recent Facebook post. She acknowledged, “Gil and Sarah are dancing in heaven with joy.”

Gil Almeida passed away in 2009 and Sarah Almeida died four years later. There’s never a day that goes

by that their children don’t pause for a moment and remember the impact both had on their lives.

“I know my mom and dad are looking down on us with a big smile on their face,” said Gail.

Lisa Sienkiewicz and Gail Parella have certainly come a long way since their days as wide-eyed youngsters growing up on Cedar Drive and posing for their annual Christmas advertising photos for the local newspaper. Back then, Lisa couldn’t wait for Santa (played by

the late Frank D. Balzano) to arrive.

However, sister Gail looked for the nearest place to hide. She wasn’t that fond of those photos sessions.

They both laugh about it now.

Today, those sweet memories, at least for a day, will take a back seat to thoughts of the 2017 Bristol Fourth of July Parade, and a prominent place in the lore of Bristol’s trademark event. And, you know, Gil and Sarah Almeida will be marching right there alongside their daughters every step of the way.

Colonel Andrew James Drake Marine intelligence officer chosen as 2017 Patriotic Speaker

An intelligence officer who has served the Marine Corps throughout the world will make a stop in Bristol for the Fourth of July to deliver this year’s Patriotic Address, the Bristol Fourth of July Committee has announced.

Colonel Andrew James Drake, a New York native, will stop off in Bristol before heading to Washington, DC, to begin his new position in the Office of Net Assessment.

After traveling all around the world leading intelligence missions, especially in East Asia, Colonel Drake has been stationed in Hawaii for the last three years, where he was serving as a senior intelligence officer.

Colonel Drake enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1987.

His initial fleet tour was with the 1st Marine Division Staff Judge Advocate before a lateral-move into intelligence and a transfer to 11th Marines. He was accepted into the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program in 1990, reached the rank of sergeant, and graduated cum laude from George Washington University in 1993. He returned to the fleet as an intelligence officer with the 3rd Marine Air Wing and served as the targeting officer for the G2.

In 1996, Colonel Drake was accepted into the Foreign Area Officer program for China, where he attended the Naval Postgraduate School, the Defense Language Institute and a year of in-country training, visiting every province of China from 1999 to 2000.

Colonel Drake remained in the Pacific with the III Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) G2 on Okinawa, Japan as the current intelligence officer, and completed that tour with three months in East Timor in a counter-intelligence billet. In 2001, he was assigned to Pacific Command (PACOM) and worked in the China Division of JICPAC, first as the Pol-Mil branch chief, and then as the branch chief in support of PACOM’s operational planning.

After PACOM, Colonel Drake attended Command and Staff College, which was followed by a two-year tour in South Korea in the Combined Forces Command as an intelligence planner. After completing JPME-2, Colonel Drake was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps Intel Department before being deployed to Iraq in 2008-09 to be with Multi-National Force-West as the intelligence planner, and served all over Anbar and Ninewa Provinces, and the Saudi Arabian and Syrian borders.

Colonel Drake returned to the

Pentagon to work as the human intelligence and counter-intelligence branch chief in intel department for eight months before serving in Beijing as the Marine attaché to China from 2010 to 2013.

After China, he worked in the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Strategic Initiative Group. While there, he was selected for colonel and assigned to Hawaii to be the G2 (Senior Intelligence Officer) for Marine Forces Pacific from August 2014 to June 2017. He has just returned to Washington, D.C. to start working in the Office of Net Assessment.

He holds a master’s degree in military studies from the Marine Corps University, a master’s in national security affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a bachelor’s degree in political science (cum laude) from George Washington University. He graduated high school in Clinton, NY. Colonek Drake is married to Ameurfinna (Moy), and they have three children: Andrew,9, Elisabeth, 8, and Warren,7, while his parents, Ed and Diane, live with them in Fairfax Station, Virginia.

The queens are crowned

Olivia Borgia and Angela Pirri win 2017 Miss and Little Miss Fourth of July

Fourth of July royalty has been crowned as the Ms. and Little Ms. Fourth of July winners were determined at Mt. Hope High School on Memorial Day weekend.

Olivia Borgia, 19, and Angela "Ella" Pirri, 8, emerged from a field of 14 and 15 constestants, respectively, to win the crown after answering questions on stage and modeling their evening gowns and party dresses before a packed Mt. Hope auditorium.

"This is very exciting," Ms. Borgia said minutes after being crowned. "I was really nervous. I didn't think it was going to be

me, but I'm really happy it was. It's very humbling."

This isn't Ms. Borgia's first attempt at the crown.

The daughter of Michael and Kathleen Borgia competed in the Little Miss Fourth of July pageant when she was younger, falling just short in that competition. As a Bristol native, she's no stranger to the parade, watching every year and even marching in it once with her dance team when she was younger. This year, she will lead the celebration.

"I live in Bristol; this is one of the things you do," Ms. Borgia said when asked what made her run for the title. "I did it when I

was younger and I made so many friends and had such a good time, I wanted to do it again. I've been in the parade before. This year, I'm just glad I won't have to walk."

Ms. Pirri, a second-grader at Colt Andrews School, will join her counterpart on the Ms. Fourth of July float in the parade, something she also is excited to be a part of after having watched every year before.

"I've been in Bristol ever since I was born," said Ms. Pirri, daughter of Rob and Julie Pirri. "I thought it would be a good opportunity (to compete for the crown).

It's really exciting. I'm really happy."

Ms. Borgia and Ms. Pirri will be front and center throughout Bristol as the Fourth of July approaches. The pageant winners will appear at various Fourth of July related events, including the concert series at Independence Park, the Drum and Bugle Corps competition, various fundraisers for the Fourth of July Committee, and the event Ms. Borgia is most looking forward to.

"I love going to the concerts, but I get to go to the ball this year. It's always fun to get dressed up," said Ms. Borgia, a nursing major

at the University of Rhode Island.

"The parade is my favorite. It's just so big and over the top. So many people come in for it. It's really exciting."

Like every year, the judges had a very difficult decision whittling down the names of 29 contestants to a court of three Little Ms. and four Ms. Fourth of July contestants, event chairwoman Pat Squatrito said. Joining Ms. Borgia are first runner-up Sophia Desmarais, second runner-up Emily Marshall and third runnerup Nikola Francis. Joining Ms. Pirri are first runner-up Kara Jean Pisasale, and second runnerup Addison Abate.

Young artist repeats as button contest winner Forest Rodriguez, winner

A patriotic image depicting soldiers saluting the Statue of Liberty will serve as the symbol of this year’s Bristol Fourth of July celebration.

Forest Rodriguez, a 14-year-old freshman at LaSalle Academy, designed the image that will appear on the Fourth of July buttons for the 2017 celebration. Forest, who lives with his family on Griswold Avenue, is the winner of the annual button contest for the second straight year.

The button shows the statue of liberty surrounded by exploding fireworks and 50 stars representing the states. Three soldiers in the foreground salute the statue, paying homage to our armed forces and patriotism in general. A recent trip to New York City inspired the design, Forest said.

“I saw the statue of liberty and thought about how it’s a part of us and bonds us with other nations,” Forest said. “And the soldiers keep us safe. They allow us to have parades and contests like these without being in danger.”

Forest, who grew up in Bristol and has never missed a parade, “at least as far as I remember,” drew the design using colored pencils. He said he’s looking forward to seeing his design all around town. “It’s always a big plus seeing people wearing the buttons and show16 16

ing that they like it,” he said.

Forest is the overall winner for the second straight year, and is also the category winner for grades 9-12.

Other category winners include Gianna Singh, a fourth grader at Colt Andrews School, in the K-5 category; and Zoe Fournier-Swire, an eighth grader at Kickemuit Middle School who has been an overall winner twice in the past, for grades 6-8. Category winners are awarded $50, and the overall winner receives an additional $75.

All three are invited to march in the parade.

The buttons cost $1 each and are available for sale at several Fourth of July-related events, including the patiotic license plate distribution April 8, the Spring Breakfast April 30, and the Miss 4th of July pageant in May. They will be available in stores throughout town in June, and at the souvenir trailer at the Fourth of July concerts at Independence Park in June.

Committee is long-time volunteer’s ‘salvation’ Bette Anne Moreira has served on the Fourth of July committee for more than 50 years

With more than 50 years’ experience under her belt, Bristol Fourth of July Committee lifetime member Bette Anne Moreira says she’d do it all over again. In retrospect, the Fourth of July Committee has been her rock of Gibraltar.

“It’s Christmas in July,” the 75-year-old native Bristolian excitedly said when talking about the Fourth of July. “No one gets married on the Fourth of July.

Classmates and old friends come back to town in a reunion type atmosphere. But, most importantly, it’s parade day.”

When Bette Anne, a 1960 graduate of Bay View Academy, got interested in joining the Fourth of July Committee, she didn’t have to look far for advice.

“I first joined in 1965 because of 22

my mother,” she said. “I had to join. I had no other choice.”

Bette Anne extols the virtues of her late mother, Frances Holmes, whose dedication to the Bristol Fourth of July Committee was well-known.

“My mother put her whole heart and soul into the Fourth of July Committee,” Ms. Moreira said. “I just followed her lead. On top of that, my father (the late Bristol Councilman E. Hugh Holmes) was the Council liaison to the Fourth of July Committee. So you can see how much the Fourth of July Celebration meant to our family.”

As a youngster growing up in the old neighborhood at 106 State St., the Fourth of July Parade had a special impact.

“Many of the parade participants would stop by the house,” she recalled. “The Boy Scouts and Navy personnel formed on State Street back then. It was like one, big, happy family. Our door was always open.”

Ms. Moreira also has the unique distinction of being the first woman

elected general chairwoman of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee.

That came in 1990, after she served for 17 years as recording secretary of the committee.

“I was excited to be the first woman chairman,” she explained.

“I was very surprised when thenChairman Jim Farley and his vice chairman, Andy Vorro, asked if I would be interested in the position.

I hurried home to ask my husband first, and then told him I wanted it.

That was that.”

During the two years she served as general chairman, Bette Anne picked two chief marshals she was very proud of…the late Kenneth J. Marshall and Anthony E. Agatiello.

“It was a no-brainer,” she said.

“Those two men were very wellknown in the local community and highly respected. They both did a great deal for our town.”

Most recently, Ms. Moreira has served as chairman of the Flag Day reception at the First Congregational Church, following the ceremonies on the Bristol Town Common.

“This has been a wonderful venue for this reception the last couple of years,” she said. “Everyone seems to have a good time.”

Like many other lifetime members, Bette Anne Moreira enjoys getting involved in a variety of Fourth of July subcommittees, including Patriotic Exercises in front of the Colt School the morning of the Fourth of July.

“Working with my mother on that day was a real thrill for me,” she said. “Frances was always in total control. Anyone who knew her will be the first to tell you that. She always made her point perfectly clear. I also enjoyed working with Judy Squires, who does a great job with Patriotic Exercises each year.”

Julie Dollins and her younger sister, Charlotte DeMarco, credit Ms. Moreira for their long-term involvement with the Fourth of July Committee.

“I have Bette Anne to thank for me being on the committee,” said Ms. Dollins, a longtime friend. “She suggested that I join years ago, and that’s exactly what I did. It’s been a wonderful and rewarding experience, especially working with her. She’s been a great friend.”

Ms. DeMarco said one of the first people she met on the committee years ago was Bette Anne.

“She ran the Celebration’s Old Fashioned Days event for a number of years, and it was a pleasure working with her. She’s very dedicated to this committee. She’s fun to be around.”

As much joy as the Fourth of July has brought to the Moreira family, there have been some very sad moments along the way.

“I lost my youngest daughter, Susan, in a tragic accident,” she said. “She was only 11 years old. It was also the same time that my oldest daughter, Joanne, was crowned Miss Fourth of July two weeks earlier. That was a very difficult time for me, my husband (Joseph “Muffy” Moreira), and our family. My whole world came crashing down in one fleeting moment.”

Ms. Moreira was also emotionally tested when her beloved husband of more than 40 years passed away at age 66 in 2007. And, just last month, she lost one of her dearest friends, Maureen Castriotta, to cancer.

She concurs that despite all of these personal losses, she still has the Fourth of July Committee to fall back on.

“It’s my salvation,” she said. “Being on this committee has done wonders for me. It keeps me occupied and busy. There’s a great bunch of people here. They work so hard to make this event what it is today … the best Fourth of July Celebration in the country.”

Over the years, Ms. Moreira says she’s been fortunate to be associated with a number of incredible people, including several past general chairmen.

“They’ve all been great people to work with,” she said. “It’s been very rewarding.”

Ms. Moreira also gets great, loving support from her family, including sons Mark and James Morreira, and daughter, Joanne Jones.

“Being continually on the Fourth of July Committee is my greatest joy,” she said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

ROBERT SQUATRITO Commitment to community earns Bristol native the Hattie Brown Award

Besides his selfless dedication to volunteering in the community and his impressive career at Raytheon and in the military, one thing you have to know about the always-smiling, soon-to-be 67-year-old Bristol native Robert Squatrito ... he always comes prepared.

Case in point was during the initial meeting for this interview, Mr. Squatrito brought with him some old scrapbooks that depicted the events of much of his life.

Everything was well-documented and in order, as you might expect from a man who has spent an inordinate amount of time working for his community, while juggling a full-time career. His commitment to the community is why Robert J. Squatrito is the 2017 Hattie Brown Award winner.

Named in honor of the late Fourth of July Committee member who was well-known for her charitable contributions and community activism, the committee presents the award each July 4 during Patriotic Exercises at the Colt School. It is awarded to a Bristolian “who shows the same spirit of charity and community service Hattie Brown was known for.”

“I was very surprised to get this award,” said Mr. 24

Squatrito, who like Miss Brown, has done a great deal of volunteer work in the community. “Hattie worked alongside me at Raytheon for eight years. She was a warm, loving person. She always did what she could for others without ever thinking of herself. It’s an honor to be recognized for giving back to the community.”

Like the award’s namesake, Mr. Squatrito exemplifies what the Hattie Brown Award is all about, according to Judy Squires, chairwoman of the award subcommittee.

“The committee thought that Bob Squatrito was the perfect choice for the Hattie Brown Award because of all the volunteerism he has done,” Ms. Squires said.

“He certainly demonstrates the same spirit of community service as Hattie did many years ago. Bob started volunteering at the age of six and has not stopped to this day. The committee thought they couldn't find a better candidate for this award, and we know that the many organizations he helped over the years will definitely feel the same way.”

Following his Bristol High School graduation, Robert attended Providence College and graduated in 1972 with a degree in accounting. He later went on to Bryant College to earn credits within its Master’s program.

Robert Squatrito then began a 38-year career at the Raytheon Company’s Submarine Signal Division in Portsmouth. He rotated into 13 different positions of increasing responsibility and retired in 2010 as senior financial manager. Along the way, he received many noteworthy awards, including the IDS President’s Award, President Coin, and Finance Excellent Team Award. In 2009, he was one of four employees who received the IDS Our People Award. His accomplishments were concluded with the Raytheon Co. IDS “Person of the Year” Award for 2009.

He also received Ambassador status in 2009 from Northeastern University. In 2006, he envisioned and began building a program dedication to promote excellence within Raytheon Company’s Finance and Contract core by guiding employees in finding opportunities for rotations, education, and mentoring relationships. This vision led him to develop the Raytheon-Northeastern MBA Rotation Program.

In January 1990, he co-founded a tax preparation business, A & R Tax Associates, which is still serving the community after 27 years.

Robert also served 26 years with the RI National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve. He retired in 1996 as a Master Sergeant within Food Service. A highlight of his career was winning the Philip A. Connelly Award as the best Field Food Service Unit in the National Guard and Army Reserves for the Army’s First Region.

During his prestigious career, Robert has found time to give back to the community, in the true spirit of Hattie Brown. For the last 25 years, he has been collecting for the Knights of Columbus Handicap Drive and distributing food to the needy as a member of the Friends of St. Elizabeth. He is also a driving force with the La Bella Sicilia Society, serving as the chairman of its annual Thanksgiving and Christmas fundraiser, which donates the proceeds to the less fortunate for food and presents during the holiday season. In addition, he is a member of the RI Blood Center Frequent Donors.

For the past 46 years, Robert has been married to the former Margaret Riley, his first and only true love. They have three children, Rob Jr., Margaret Gagner, and Melissa Silvia. They also have seven grandsons, Joshua,

Andrew and Nicholas Squatrito, William Hunter Silvia, and Aidan, Liam and Riley John Gagner.

Robert and Margaret now winter in Sarasota, Fla., but when Robert returns, he can be seen cooking macaroni and meatballs for the Fourth of July fundraiser.

He is also a part of the Visiting Ships Picnic Committee.

From 2010 through 2014, Mr. Squatrito chaired four fundraisers and served on seven committees. He has been a key contributor to the Fourth of July Celebration.

His additional volunteer activities include past captain of the Bristol Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation “Dollars for Scholars;” past Company Captain of the Southeastern NE United Way; past Team Captain of the Heart Fund Colt State Park Walk; former umpire and coach of the Bristol King Philip Little League; past Committee Chairman of Cub Scout Pack #6, St. Mary’s Church; past Treasurer, Boy Scouts of America, Troop #6, St. Michael’s Church; and member of the Bristol Council #379 Knights of Columbus for 45 years.

Also, past volunteer instructor, Junior Achievement of RI, Project Business; former umpire and scorekeeper, Bristol Industrial Softball League; former line judge, Bristol County Touch Football League; former referee and scorekeeper, Bristol Recreation Summer Basketball League; former member, Cup Defenders Association; former social member, Defiance Hose Company; past Fair Chairman, St. Philomena’s School; and past member, Bristol High School Boosters Club.

Robert Squatrito lives for the Fourth of July. This year, it will take on a little more meaning. As one might expect, he’s busy mapping out his strategy and getting his patriotic attire in order. He’s excited at the prospect of attending Celebration events like the Fourth of July Ball, the Yacht Club Reception, and of course, participating in the Fourth of July Parade.

“Fourth of July has always been special to me,” he explained, “especially in this town. Like everyone else who lives here, I’ve learned that no one does it better than Bristol on the Fourth of July.”

Huskies on Parade

BY MANUEL C. “MANNY” CORREIRA The colors may have changed from Green and White to Purple and White, but the quality of music remains the same: scintillating, animated and energetic.

Before the former Bristol High School and Warren High School merged to become Mt. Hope High in 1993, the Fourth of July Parade featured the renowned Bristol High School Band, under the direction of some quality instructors such as Albert Dalton, Roger Dietz, Lou Pezzullo and Bob Arsenault.

Marching in the Fourth of July Parade was as important to these gentlemen and their student musicians as any musical event during the school year. They knew they’d be performing before the biggest crowd of the year and in front of many of their relatives and friends.

One veteran BHS band member from the 1950s and early ‘60s was Ralph “Bunny” Ferrara.

“I played cymbals and drums back then,” said Mr. Ferrara, who later performed with the Rhode Island Matadors Drum & Bugle Corps. “The Bristol parade was everything. The first time I saw the size of the crowd, I was amazed. Throngs of people were lined on both sides of the parade route. It was amazing. It was like you were transported to another world.”

Mr. Ferrara credited Roger Dietz for bringing the band into the modern era.

“Mr. Dietz took the band to another level,” he said. “He was way ahead of his time. And, above all, the kids loved him.”

When Bob Arsenault took control of the program, things got even better, including the years he was the marching band and concert band director at Mt. Hope High School. There was no one better. He was a great role model and well-respected by his peers. The band won many awards and was regarded as one of the finest high school musical units anywhere in the northeast.

Nowadays, Christopher Lambert is the main man directing the Mt. Hope High Marching Band. Assistant band director is Britney Verria, whom Mr. Lambert says is a valuable asset to the program. On average, the MHHS Band consists of 130-140 members in grades 9 through 12. They just keep getting better and better every year.

Mr. Lambert, 31, who is married to the former Kelsey Oliver and is the father of one son, has been part of Bristol’s Fourth of July fabric for a number of years, and says there’s nothing quite like it.

“It’s an honor to be in the Fourth of July Parade,” he said. “I’ve been band director now for 10 years, and it’s been a great experience. We have a great group of kids here at Mt. Hope.

Participating in the Bristol Fourth of July Parade has been a long-standing

tradition, and we’re extremely happy to be part of it.”

A 2003 Mt. Hope High graduate and former band member, Mr. Lambert is originally from Warren, but recently settled in Bristol, so he knows how meaningful the high school band is to both communities.

“We know how important the parade is,” he said. “The town has been so supportive of what we do. The kids really love it. The distance and weather conditions make it a challenge, but they step up to it and embrace the challenge.”

Mr. Lambert, who earned Bachelor and Master’s degrees in music education from URI, continues to help promote and produce a winning musical product.

“This Fourth of July, we’ll probably have a total of 100 musicians, dancers, and flag and banner carriers in the parade,” he said. “We have a great support staff, including advisors and volunteers, which is really important to us.”

In the past, the Mt. Hope High School Marching Band has been the lead musical unit in the parade on a number of occasions, an honor they’ve certainly deserved. But regardless of lineup placement, they’re happy just to be in the Chief Marshal’s Division, doing what they do best… helping Bristol celebrate America’s independence with spectators that continue to vigorously applaud.

BY MANUEL C. “MANNY” CORREIRA The Bristol Fourth of July “Summer Music Preview” Drum and Bugle Corps Committee has a new person in charge of operations this year in John Noble, and like his predecessors, he’s anxious to continue the success of this very popular Fourth of July Celebration activity.

“Things are going very well,” said the Coldwell Banker realtor, who has taken over the lead role as SMP chairman (along with Frank Fales) from longtime drum corps show committee members Tony and Gerald Mederos. “Frank and I, along with the rest of the committee, are working hard to ensure another successful show.”

Like last year, the 2017 Summer Music Preview competition, now in its 28th year, will be returning to the 3,000-seat Cranston Stadium, 9 Flint Ave., Cranston, on Monday, July 3, starting at 6 p.m. The show will go on rain or shine.

Crown from Ft. Mills, S.C., and The Cadets from Allentown, Penn.

They will be joined by the Crossmen from San Antonio, Texas; The Colts from Dubuque, Louisiana; Spirit of Atlanta from Atlanta; Jersey Surf from Camden County, NJ; 7th Regiment from New London, Conn.; The Spartans from Nashua, NH; and Genesis from Austin, Texas.

“For the first time ever, we have nine competing corps this year,” Mr. Noble said. “Genesis is also competing for the first time ever.”

Last year, the Spartans took top honors in the Open Class with a score of 56.900, while the Cadets captured the World Class Division with a score of 77.200.

The 2017 Summer Music Preview will feature three of the top 10 teams in Drum Corps International. Carolina Crown finished third at the DCI World Championships in Indianapolis last year with a score of 97.088, while the Cadets placed sixth (92.763), and the Crossmen finished 10th (86.975).

“There is a lot of excitement over this year's show,” Frank Fales added. “With nine corps, it is our biggest and best ever. As usual, people are buying tickets from all over the country as the corps always have great follow-

ings. Ticket sales are strong and as one of only two northeast corps shows this season, people are buying earlier than ever. When you combine that with the great facility of Cranston Stadium, you have one of the best Rhode Island summer events this year.”

The show will continue the next day, as four drum corps are expected to march in the Bristol Fourth of July Parade —The Cadets, Carolina Crown, The Crossmen and Jersey Surf.

“We’re getting the top groups coming in,” Mr. Noble said.

Although this will be John Noble’s first year heading up the Summer Music Preview Committee, he is getting plenty of help from many other Fourth of July Committee members.

“Tony and Gerry Mederos are mentoring me along,” he said. “It’s a lot of hard work, but the entire committee has been right there with me working hard to make this event another great success.”

Mr. Fales continued, “The City of Cranston has been most helpful and the people there are excited about the shows as well. Corps fans are an extended family and most love to reminisce about their days participating in Drum and Bugle Corps. Many have even played at Cranston Stadium and are glad to see the shows return there. A lot of people left feeling very happy and very satisfied with last year's show.”

BY MARGEAUX GAGNON Each year, while watching Bristol’s Fourth of July parade, spectators dance to the music of the bands, laugh along with the clowns, marvel at the colors of the floats, and salute the troops as they march by.

But there is one element of the parade that many spectators — kids and adults, alike — look forward to seeing the most — the Clydesdales, those massive horses that trot down Hope and High streets with their heads high and manes and tales perfectly groomed.

“There is so much charisma from them with their big bodies.”

The horses are housed at Barry’s Farm in Lakeville, Mass. The Clydesdales — whose name originates from the area around the River Clyde in Scotland where they were originally bred — come from leading breeders in the United States, Canada and Great Britain.

Each Clydesdale weighs about 2,200 pounds, stands at just over six feet tall and is about nine years old. This will be the 30th year in a row that the Hallamore Clydesdales march down the red, white and blue stripes.

A lot of prep work goes into making sure the Clydesdales look and feel good the day of a parade. The day before the parade, the workers will wash each horse to make sure they are looking their best. In the morning before the Clydesdales leave the farm in Lakeville, each horse will get about 30 minutes of primping; workers will brush the horses and braid their manes and tails. It takes about four hours for the workers to finish prepping all eight horses in the morning, which can mean starting the prep process around 3 a.m.

When the Clydesdales arrive in Bristol, they are loaded off their trailer in Colt State Park, where they get another final once over before being fit into their 125-pound harnesses.

The Clydesdales, which Mr. Barry has owned for 43 years, are a crowd favorite due in part to their size and their personalities.

They require work seven days a week, but he said he loves the animals, and the crowd’s reaction makes it all worth it.

“No matter how many times you come back, the enthusiasm is always the same,” he said. “There is never a disappointment.”

In addition to the Fourth of July parade, the Clydesdales go to many other events both in Rhode Island and around New England, including the Gaspee Days Parade in Warwick a couple weeks before the Fourth.

The wagon the Clydesdales pull also has special significance. The 110-year-old wagon was originally built by the Studebaker Company in Chicago in 1899, and is one of three such wagons in the country. It originally belonged to a meat packaging company in Illinois and was purchased and restored by the Hallamore Company around 1980. The wagon is used only for parades to make sure it stays in good condition.

The 2017 Bristol Fourth of July Concert Series promises to be as exciting and entertaining as in past years. And, situated at picturesque Independence Park with its majestic Bristol Harbor background, the venue will once again undoubtedly attract huge audiences. There will be 24 performances in 14 days, starting June 20, and continuing through July 3.

“We have six new acts this year,” noted Raymond “Sonny” Lavey, who’s entering his 10th year as chairman of the Fourth of July Committee’s Concert Series, “including a first-ever Frog and the Prince performance on Saturday, July 1, at 1 p.m. This is a children’s performance that should be a big hit.”

Headlining the musical offerings this year will be Nashville star Buddy Jewell, the first winner of the USA Network’s Country Music reality TV show, “Nashville Star.”

He will be on stage at Independence Park on Sunday, June 25, at 7:45 p.m. This will be his first appearance in Bristol.

“I know people will love this guy,” said Mr. Lavey. “He is wellknown and highly respected in the country music industry.”

Other newcomers to Bristol this year will be Blue Lights Bandits/ Northeast Traffic on Monday, June 26; Neal & The Vipers on Tuesday, June 27; SIRSY on June 29; and the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band on Friday, June 30.

“I’m sure people will be excited to see and hear each of these performers this year,” said Mr. Lavey.

The Concert Series kicks off on Tuesday, June 20, at 7 p.m., with the renowned 88th Army Band.

Traditional favorites will also be returning to this year’s music lineup. They include Band of Brothers/ Rendition on June 21; the East Bay Summer Wind Ensemble/Mike DiMucci on June 22; Gerry Grimo and the East Bay

“Last year, the Concert Series attracted the largest crowds ever,” Mr. Lavey reported. “We estimated that approximately 35,000 people attended during the 14 performance nights. It seems to be getting bigger every year.”

For the most part, Mr. Lavey says, things run pretty smoothly each year.

“Trash recycling is also important at the park,” he said. “We practice recycling. We also advise people not to bring pets. Pets are strongly discouraged.”

tunes, and contemporary favorites popularized by a variety of composers for the theater and screen such as Stephen Sondheim, Rogers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Henry Mancini, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and others. A native of Trenton, New Jersey, Michael, now relocated to Rhode Island, is a familiar face in Bristol, having done numerous shows at Linden Place and Cabaret and Sing Along performances at The Lobster Pot. He is also the current tenor soloist and cantor at Saint Mary's Church in Bristol. His eclectic repertoire and experience in musical theater and the American Songbook has enabled him to perform with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Swing and Jazz Band Avenue A, and in the South County Production of works by Gilbert and Sullivan.

He has also appeared in the Opera Workshop of URI's productions of operas such as The Magic Flute, The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore and more.

7:45 PM BUDDY JEWELL One of Arkansas’ favorite sons…BUDDY JEWELL, the very first winner of the USA Network's Country Music reality TV show NASHVILLE STAR, will perform in concert tonight. After winning, Nashville Star, Buddy experienced stunning success. His self- titled first album (produced by Clint Black) debuted at number one on Billboard Magazine's country album chart and number 13 on the Pop charts and was certified gold in both the US and Canada within a month. The first two singles "Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey's Song.") and "Sweet Southern Comfort," each climbed to the number three spot on the singles chart. His second album TIMES LIKE THESE, which included the top 20 hit, "If She Were Any Other Woman," reached number 5 on the Billboard album chart.

In addition to performing across the United States, Buddy has become an international artist playing in China, Japan, Central America for Compassion International and much of Europe. The man who has supported so many causes sang for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on an historic 2013 USO Tour. Here at home he's been a national spokesman for St Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

He was inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame In October of 2015 and has been recognized by the Grammy’s, ACM (Academy of Country Music), and the CMA (Country Music Association). Their vast catalog of original music is authentic, eclectic, and honest. Becky covers artists as diverse as Irving Berlin, Johnny Cash, and Men at Work. She believes in the power of music. Whether she’s playing her original songs with Brian as an acoustic duo, fronting The Becky Chace Band, she is present in the moment enjoying the connection of community that only music can create.

Becky performs at least 200 shows per year. She’s tough to pin down in terms of style; she’s that kind of musician who can’t help but go in different directions. SIRSY is a rock and soul duo with lots of pop sensibility and just the right amount of sass. The Boston Globe sums it up, “Little band. Big Sound.” No more needs to be said. Although the only thing “little” about Sirsy is that there’s just two of them. The rest is bigger than a T-Rex. SIRSY is currently hard at work writing new songs for a follow-up to their latest EP “Sketches and Ghosts” and their most recent full-length offering, “Coming into Frame”.

“Coming into Frame” was produced by Grammy-winners, Paul Kolderie & Sean Slade (Radiohead, Hole, Dresden Dolls, Pixies). SIRSY’s song “Cannonball” was featured on the hit tv show “Shameless” (on Showtime). Their music video for “Lionheart” was in rotation on MTVu and their song “Revolution” was the theme song for a PBS documentary “So Right, So Smart”. (The music video for ‘Revolution’ was also in rotation on HBO.

Trinity is comprised of three vocalists with decades of experience in the music industry. An offshoot of the popular East Bay RI band "Band Of Brothers", Trinity started as a vehicle for the three lead vocalists to perform acoustically. Fred & Eric Komiega are still in Band of Brothers, while Joe Caron left the band to pursue varied musical interests. As a vocal/acoustic act Trinity is in a class all its own. Trinity specializes in performing music with soaring vocal harmonies by such classic acts as Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Hollies, The Beatles, Byrds, etc. Utilizing Joe's intricate fingerstyle guitar work and Fred's driving rhythm guitar along with Eric handling electronic and hand percussion, Trinity is unlike any other acoustic act in New England.

Nashville super-group SIXWIRE, returning to Bristol for the 4th time, brings five veterans of touring, recording, and songwriting to the Bristol stage. With three lead guitarist/vocalists and a rock solid rhythm section, SIXWIRE presents a stellar neo country/rock performance.
