Tradition and honoring family are strong values at Phil Gasbarro’s Barrington Liquors

F

amily tradition and a loyalty to her heritage is important to Nicole Gasbarro, third generation Operator and Chief Executive Officer of Phil Gasbarro’s Liquor store on Warren Avenue in East Providence. Carrying on her family business that started in the 1940’s and is still going strong today, Nicole understands the changing times and has a pulse on the needs of her customers. A 2015 graduate of George Mason University with a degree in psychology and business, she started working at her father Chris Gasbarro’s Seekonk store and learned the business from the ground up. “I started working on the floor and learned the ropes through my dad and his 35 years of experience. When I left working at my dad’s store, I took over the East Providence store in January of last year and I wanted to fulfill my grandparent’s legacy by working hard to make it succeed,” she said. Her grandfather Phil had a store in Cranston and moved the store to East Providence in the early 1960's. Phil passed away 21 years ago, and her grandmother Anna ran the store before taking ill. Her cousin Lou Gasbarro ran the store for many years after that and at 86 is a blessing to Nicole as she takes the business in to the future. “Lou has seen it all. He knows all the customers and knows how my grandparents did things. Their values shine through in the way Lou has run the business. He is amazing and works six days a week. He is a true inspiration and has helped me learn a lot,” she said. Nicole oversees 17 employees and does the scheduling, hiring, buying and bringing in new products. She has freshened up the store with new paint and displays but has keep the integrity of the shop. “When I got here it was a throwback to the 1970’s. I didn’t want to take away any of the history of the space, but simply give it a facelift. We brought in new signage and new stock” she said. New to the store is tastings and food and wine pairing events that you can check the Phil Gasbarro's Barrington Liquors, Inc Facebook page for updates on. With fresh eyes and a renewed ener-

gy, Nicole brings a vast knowledge of wine. She has spent time in Portugal and Italy studying wine and did an externship at Gallo Wineries in Napa Valley and Sonoma County, California learning the industry during the crucial harvesting time period. She feels the best way to sell wine is to drink it and know how and where it is made. In keeping with the family atmosphere of the store, the store carries a variety of items for every taste and price point. From a $3 bargain bin to high end champagne or a rare bourbon, on top of a huge variety in between, they aim to cater to all their customers - just as her grandparents did for decades. “East Providence is a melting pot with a diverse population. We try and serve the community as best we can by offering a competitive price and a variety to appeal to everyone,” she said. Like Us On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PhilGasbarros/

Bad Dog Painting celebrates 17 years of providing quality and professionalism

F

or more than 17 years, Bill Souza’s company Bad Dog Painting has been providing affordable quality painting for homes and businesses throughout Southern New England and beyond. His team of licensed and insured professionals go the extra mile for their clients. As owner and operator, Bill will supervise each painting project. His years of experience and stability reassure you, the customer, that you are receiving professional, outstanding customer service and high-quality workmanship. BadDog is much more than a painting crew. They are lead paint certified and offer free professional consultations and accurate estimates. As a professional painting consultant and U.S. veteran, Bill always gives the customer a clear idea of each project, provides a written estimate, and makes professional recommendations. Services include interior and exterior painting, power washing and wood restoration, brush and spray applications and epoxy repairs. All their work is completely guaranteed for one year. That’s worth something to celebrate! His professional services are a step above the rest by always being on time and efficient. “When we say we are going to be there, we’re there. Its on-time delivery. We are also known for being the cleanest and quickest painters you have ever seen; we get in and get out,” he said. In addition to residential jobs, BadDog is known for exceptional work on commercial buildings, up-scale boutique hotels in particular. In the past few years, they completed renovation work at the Gilded Hotel in Newport and the Attwater, also in Newport. The Gilded Hotel is known for their bold color schemes. “Everything at the Gilded is over the top. Even the outside of the building is purple. We did the inside and outside,” he said. This past year, BadDog took on one of the biggest commercial projects to date with the renovation of the former

Wesley Hotel on Martha’s Vineyard. The distinctive Oak Bluffs hotel has been in continuous operation as a destination for travelers since 1879. The property was in serious need of a renovation, and in wanting to embrace this new lease on life, the owners felt that it was time for a change... but a change that truly honors the history of the building. They made the right choice when hiring BadDog to do the work. “We painted all 96 rooms plus common areas throughout the complete old Wesley Hotel on Martha's Vineyard now called Summer Camp. This is where the secret service stay when the president was vacationing there. We were there from November 2015 through May 2016 when they opened for May 18th,” Mr. Souza said. Bright and sunny, Summer Camp was brought into the 21st century with the much-needed facelift provided by Mr. Souza and his talented team of professionals. No job is too big for BadDog. They love taking on a challenge and won’t disappoint in the end. Give them a call for a free estimate and you will see that they are a cut above the rest in professional painting services. Visit them on Facebook to see some of the expert work BadDog has completed and see why BadDog Painting is the best solution for all your renovation needs.

Aspire Dermatology celebrates opening of new location in Tiverton

A

spire Dermatology, with offices conveniently located in Riverside, Newport and Johnston, has recently opened a fourth location in Tiverton, RI. Aspire Dermatology is a full service medical and surgical provider of dermatology services, offering skin screenings, general dermatology, Mohs surgery and cosmetic procedures. Aspire Dermatology was founded by Jason Michaels, M.D., who has almost two decades of experience as a boardcertified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. He, a nurse practitioner, and staff of physician assistants and aestheticians are ready to serve all your skin care needs professionally and on a timely basis. Their newest location is in Tiverton and conveniently located off of Route 24 on Route 81. It fills the void of dermatology in the area, especially for those who live in southeastern Massachusetts and the easternmost bay communities of Rhode Island. Dr. Michaels is one of very few board-certified dermatologists in the area who performs Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a specialized technique to remove skin cancers. Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate of any treatment while also being the most tissue conservative surgical option available. The procedure is performed at all of the Aspire locations. Since the skin is the largest organ of the body, it is logical that skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, accounting for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. There are more than 2 million cases of basal and squamous cell cancer found annually. Melanoma, the most serious skin cancer type, will account for more than 75,000 cases this year. According to the Melanoma Research Foundation, one in 50 Americans has a lifetime risk of developing melanoma. This means that every eight minutes, someone in the U.S. will be given a melanoma diagnosis and every hour, someone will die from the disease.

Dermatologists treat a range of skin conditions, from actinic keratosis, contact dermatitis, hand dermatitis, and dry skin, to excessive sweating, impetigo, skin tags and warts, as well as preventative skin care, psoriasis, rosacea, shingles, and skin cancer. Aspire Dermatology provides many other skin related aesthetic services, from laser treatments to very mild peels and skin care products that treat red and brown spots, broken blood vessels and uneven skin tone that come with aging and excessive sun exposure. Aspire Dermatology is happy to accept SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS and prides itself on customer service and accommodating its clients. Please call today for an appointment at one of their four friendly locations.

Barrington Printing is alive And well… and still living and growing In Rhode Island

I

f you lived in the East Bay between 1981 and 2003, there’s a good chance you remember Barrington Printing as a small familyowned walk-in copy shop on Maple Avenue in Barrington. What you might not know is that the business moved to Cranston in 2003 after outgrowing its facility in the East Bay, a move that has helped Barrington Printing become one of the larger commercial printing and mailing companies in New England. The company is still family-owned and family-operated: its co-owners are Barry Couto, who started the business with his wife Sharon in 1981, and their oldest son, Keith. Their other son, Adam, leads the Sales department; Keith’s wife, Nicole, is one of the three salespeople who work alongside Adam; and Barry and Sharon’s daughter, Jane, is the Office Manager. These family members are supported by another 20 or so dedicated staff members who operate their production facility. The close-knit working environment and attention to detail remain the same from their Maple Avenue days, but one major change is that Barrington Printing is no longer a small walk-in copy shop. The company now prints and mails catalogs, brochures, flyers, postcards and other collateral pieces for companies in Rhode Island and throughout the Northeast. “We went from a copy shop to a full-fledged commercial printer once we moved to Cranston,” Barry says. “But we’ve always stayed true to our core values - strong customer relationships and going the extra mile for our clients.” Although the company’s customer list has grown to include large national retailers, financial institutions, universities, manufacturing companies, hospitals and health care corporations, they continue to service much of the client base they had while in Barrington. “We are proud to still work with many of our customers from those early days on

AT LEFT: Barry Couto (right) opened Barrington Printing in 1981, and the family business is still going strong today, under the leadership of Barry, son Keith (left) and other family members. Maple Avenue. And we still make daily deliveries to our clients in the East Bay,” says Keith. Barrington Printing's production division runs two shifts in order to respond to today’s quick turnaround environment. The company's purchase of the former Lewis Graphics has allowed the team to expand the business to this level. And Joe Lewis, former owner of Lewis Graphics, has stayed on board to serve as the Production Coordinator for the entire production opera-

tion. Celebrating its 35th year in 2016, Barrington Printing has no plans of slowing down. “We have always been committed to growing and expanding to meet new opportunities,” says Adam. To that end, the company recently added a new division with a full-time staff, Barrington Promotions, which offers branded, promotional products to its customers. As Adam explains, “Many of our clients work in marketing departments and part of their responsibility is purchasing promotional items, such as branded pens, mugs, screen printed t-shirts, or embroidered Polo shirts and jackets. Expanding in this direction was a natural progression for

us.” Whether it’s printing and mailing one million postcards for a national company, producing five-hundred program books for a local non-profit, or assisting a company in researching and sourcing the right promotional items to reach their marketing goals, Barrington Printing and Barrington Promotions can handle all types of projects - and everything in between. Contact Barry Couto directly at 401-316-0025 or email him at barry@barringtonprinting.com to discuss how Barrington Printing or Barrington Promotions can help you get the best return on your marketing dollar.

Grace Barker celebrates 50 years of quality senior care G

race Barker Nursing Center and The Willows Adult Day and Assisted Living celebrated the 50th anniversary of Grace Barker’s founding in 2016 and continues to provide quality senior care into the future. From its beginnings, Grace Barker has been firmly rooted in both family tradition in the East Bay community. History of the business starts with Grace Fullerton Barker, a public health nurse from Warren who inspired her young neighbor Linda Moniz to pursue a noble career in nursing. In 1953, Linda enrolled in Grace Barker’s alma mater, the Truesdale Hospital School of Nursing in

Fall River. Grace Barker didn’t live to see Linda’s graduation, but she did leave behind $1,000 to help Linda complete her nursing education. Empowered by her mentor, Linda dove into the profession with enthusiasm and dedication. “Grace Barker’s generosity and belief in me made me even more determined,” Linda once wrote. As Linda labored in various nursing homes, she became fond of working with the elderly. She graduated from nursing school in 1957 and married John Machado, who then worked for Hasbro. Linda’s dream to open a nursing home took shape. A plot of land purchased from her parents, located on a quiet street in Warren, seemed like a suitable location. Linda’s brother Joseph, amply endowed with management and sales experience, joined his sister and her husband in their

new business venture. In 1965, ground was broken and the nursing home began to take form. A loan was secured for construction, albeit at a high interest rate. Linda’s father and stepmother offered up all their assets as collateral. With perseverance, the nursing home officially opened in December 1966. Linda and John Machado remained in an administrative capacity through the 1980s. In the early 1990s, their daughter Mary Beth, having completed the MBA program at the University of Connecticut with a specialization in long-term care, assumed an administrative role as well as the nursing coordinator. Her husband Mark Lescault who was completing his MBA in finance became the nursing center’s administrator. (Coincidentally, Mark’s grandfather Oscar Lescault designed

and drafted the nursing home.) Mary Beth’s brother John and his wife Nancy have been involved in the family business, working in the maintenance and food service departments. As Grace Barker has expanded and modernized, it evolved from a traditional nursing home to a more comprehensive senior care community expanding into adult day in 1996 and assisted living in 1998. As Mary Beth notes, “humble beginnings” have morphed into “providing comprehensive services that include acute

short-term rehab, long term care, assisted living and adult day health services.” Mark and Marybeth are hoping to pass the torch to a third generation. Their eldest son Ben is currently studying health care administration in college and younger son Ethan has expressed a desire to join the family business as well. It’s likely that Grace Barker and The Willows will continue to deliver superb care in a family-run context for years to come.

uality health care comes to Barrington and the owners of Ocean State Urgent Care couldn’t be happier about expanding their services to the East Bay. “The right care, right now” is the motto of the company that has 8 additional locations. Ocean State Urgent Care is a medical practice providing prompt treatment of all non-life-threatening acute injuries and illnesses for patients of all ages on a walk-in basis. Jennifer Zuba, a registered nurse and general manager at Ocean State Urgent Care said, “When the opportunity to open on Maple Avenue presented itself, it was a win-win for all. We saw a need to provide quality service in the area and opened in June 0f this year.” Their areas of expertise include treatment for cuts, sprains, and strains, minor traumas, cold and flu, headache, school and sports physicals, PPD and vaccine titer testing, infections, vaccines (Including flu, pneumonia, hepatitis), STD testing and more. The Wolf School: Building a Vision Sometimes it’s best to just go with your gut and do it

T

hat’s what happened in 2016 at The Wolf School, when space restrictions began impacting optimal instruction for its students. Head of School, Anna Johnson explains, “Our students have complex learning needs requiring individualized instruction and movement to regulate sensory and educational needs. With increased enrollment, it got to the point where we had to turn our library into a classroom. Space for small group instruction was so limited it spilled into the hallway and our library became books on a cart rolled between classrooms.” Instead of engaging in a lengthy capital campaign involving expensive brochures, consultants and committee meetings, Wolf jumped in, gathering a small team to reach out to potential donors for Leadership Gifts and conducting a Crowdfunding Campaign. From January 2016 when these efforts began, until the end of the school year in June, Wolf raised over $700,000 towards a building project that includes new classroom space, new faculty room/office suite, a library, and a sensory courtyard. “The whole process went incredibly fast,” comments Johnson. “Parents, alumni families, and community members were completely understanding of our needs and responded immediately with amazing generosity. The town of East Providence was great to work with, we put together a stellar volunteer building committee, and our architects (Imai Keller Moore Architects of Watertown, MA) and contractors (Chapel Building Corp. of East Providence, RI) got into gear and started making things happen over the summer.” Wolf also received in-kind support from one of their current families to remodel the school’s old faculty room into a beautiful community room that families and staff can use for meetings, resources or to socialize. In addition, this November the school proudly obtained a James Patterson and Scholastic Reading Club grant for its library. By January 2017, when Wolf students return from their winter break, the building project will be completed. In just one year, The Wolf School made its dream a reality. Johnson believes 2016 will go down in the record books for The Wolf

School. “We didn’t know if this would work, but we just decided to go for it! With no campaign overhead, every dollar went directly to the building project. And without using a traditional timeline, we just pushed forward hoping it would happen! We have incredible families and supporters who stepped up with generosity and talent. Without all their help, and their belief in The Wolf School, this never could have worked.” But the best part of this whole experience for Johnson was the reactions of the students. “The kids have been so excited watching all the changes take place, and seeing the joy on their faces when they used the library for the first time – that’s why we do this!”

Weichert/Tirrell Realty celebrates an uptick in business

P

hil Tirrell has much to celebrate this year. As owner/broker of Weichert Realtors/Tirrell Realty his business has grown exponentially in the past few years. From his humble days starting in the Real estate business in 1979 to a franchise owner with 26 agents under his direction, Phil Tirrell now can boast that his business has doubled and in the past few years and has seen increases that close in on 20 percent. “This was our best year ever. I am confident the market will continue to be strong,” he said. The history of the East Providence Real Estate company started with Phil getting his real estate license at the age of 21. He worked for various agencies before opening up his own brokerage Tirrell Realty in 2005. In 2009, he decided to partner with Weichert Realtors, a decision he says was one of the best moves in his career. “As the owner of Tirrell Realty, an independent company, I thought it was important to get back into a franchise relationship. Weichert has helped us tremendously with great tools to increase business,” he said. Weichert is the largest independent Real estate company in the country, he said, and they are the only company with Smart Phone technology that pairs up clients with agents through online programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The company gets 4 million hits a month that lead customers to agents. Weichert Realty has been in the business since 1969 and is active in 39 states. “They are most active on the internet in the Northeast. That is why I bought into the company. They offer great marketing tools, management training and topnotch technology,” he said. The partnership has paid off. With the increase in business, Phil was able to buy the building where they are currently located – the former Bank of America bank branch on Willett Avenue, across from CVS Pharmacy. They moved to the new location in 2012. The space is inviting and has plenty of parking. With cheery yellow walls, two conference rooms, agent stations, they have cozy “café” for client meetings and hold presentations there. They kept the original bank vault for a touch of nostalgia.

Their area of expertise is East Providence, Seekonk, Barrington and the East Bay area. With a quick wit and easy manner, Phil also celebrates the fact that they provide excellent customer service. “Our 26 agents and administrators are friendly and professional. We are welcoming and helpful to our clients,” he said. As Weichert Realtors/Tirrell realty

moves in to 2017, Phil feels confident that the housing market will continue to be strong and may in fact get even better. “The National Association of Realtors says the market will be driven my millennials looking to become first time buyers in the $200,000 price range. That means people selling in that price range will be buying in the $400,000 price range. That will help us tremendously,” he said.

Milbury and Company celebrates 35 years of Real Estate success in South Coast

M

ilbury and Company is proud to celebrate another year as the South Coast's leading brokerage of distinctive properties with over $95 million in sales and over $50 million in exclusively listed properties. Integrity and experience coupled with an unwavering dedication to the community are qualities Milbury and Company is proud to celebrate. Milbury and Company is an independent residential brokerage firm that has been actively involved in the residential real estate market since 1980. Through a combination of its extensive contacts and network, and in cooperation with the brokerage community, Milbury and Company professionally and competently offers its clients maximum exposure in the marketing and sale of their distinctive properties. William Milbury, owner and principal broker, envisioned a business based on unique listings, discerning clients and providing exemplary service. With this philosophy, Milbury and Company fluorished in Back Bay, Beacon Hill and Boston's finer suburbs, including Brookline, Dover, Wellesley and Weston. Teaming up with Grace Rowe in the early nineties on Cape Cod, they expanded the company's reach while continuing to provide superior service. Fifteen years ago, Will moved to Destruction Brook Farm in South Dartmouth where he established the new base of his real estate business. It quickly became the premier boutique agency for distinctive South Coast properties, be they modest, rose-covered cottages or vast waterfront estates. Will's commitment to excellence has resulted in his being the area's number one broker in 2016, for the seventh straight year. "Our goal has always been quality and quantity, therefore we have remained a small, competitive firm offering our clients undivided attention and focus. The properties Milbury and Company strives to list, market and sell are traditionally unique and prestigious," Mr. Milbury said. Having a strong presence in the local community is important at Milbury and

Company. Mr. Milbury is a member of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board, Southeastern Massachusetts Association of Realtors, Cape Cod and Islands Association of Realtors, Massachusetts Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. Will is also a member of the Padanaram Business Association, Norfolk Hunt Club, and the New Bedford Yacht Club. He supports numerous local charities including the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, Lloyd Center for the Environment, Westport River Watershed Alliance, Renaissance Community School for the Arts, Our Sisters’ School, Rotch Jones Duff House and Garden Museum, Westport Land Conservation Trust, the Trustees of Reservation, New Bedford Art Museum, Community Foundation of Greater New Bedford and The ART Drive. Offering local knowledge and a world of experience, Will Milbury and the realtors of Milbury and Company, are a team of dedicated real estate professionals who are well-equipped to serve their distinctive listing and buying clientele. They take great pride in their long history and their dominance in the area market. And after over 35 years, they are proud to be celebrating 2016 as their best year yet!

William Milbury envisioned a business based on unique listings, discerning clients and exemplary service, and 36 years later, he’s still doing it.
