Family Businesses Family and focus set Marshall Building apart Marshall specializes in roofing, siding and windows At Marshall Building & Remodeling, customers are like family. Those are the words shared on the company’s website, and it’s a message carried out each day in Marshall Building’s approach to business. The Riverside-based remodeling company which focuses on roofing, siding and windows has built a proud reputation for treating its customers — those they have known for decades as well as those they are meeting for a first time — like they are truly family. And that means a little bit more at Marshall, which is a family-run company with nearly 40 years of experience. Tom Marshall and Dave Marshall co-founded the business in 1983, and over the years more of the Marshall family has joined the team, with even more people outside of the family becoming integral to the company, as well. Anne Marshall is second-generation co-owner of the business with her brother, Andy Marshall. She said the employees at Marshall Building, even those who are not related to the Marshall family, have created a close bond. “There are a lot of good people here,” Ms. Marshall said. “Over the years we’ve grown and added more and more people to our team who aren’t family, but they share the same dedication to customer service and excellence as my father Tom did back in 1983.” The company’s success stems from

Andy Marshall and his sister Anne Marshall are second-generation, co-owners of Marshall Building & Remodeling. The Riverside-based, family-owned and operated company has built a proud reputation for treating its customers like family. a set of standards that guide the everyday operations. The standards include: No high pressure sales tactics, make customers happy, do award-winning work, 15-year workmanship warranty, and no payment until the job is done. Ms. Marshall said the company has dedicated itself to top-notch training for its team and attention to detail in its workmanship. The approach has yielded dozens of awards, including GAF President’s Club Award, CertainTeed Select Shingle Master, Vinyl Siding & Polymer Shake Master Craftsman, Alcoa’s Golden Hammer Award, accreditation by the Better Business

Bureau since 1983, and honor by the Better Business Bureau for 38 years of continuous “A” rating. Part of what helps distinguish Marshall Building from other businesses is its focus and dedication to excellence. Ms. Marshall said that while some companies branch out their work into less familiar areas, Marshall Building has built an expertise in three specific areas: roofing, siding and windows. “We’ve stayed in those areas and we’ve become the best at them over the years,” Ms. Marshall said. There are some contractors who will take on all sorts of jobs, but her father,

company founder Tom Marshall, decided long ago to become an expert in exterior remodeling and remained laser-focused on roofing, siding and windows exclusively. “We never watered down our services or quality.” Ms. Marshall said the business has also been very careful about how it has grown over the years. She said Marshall Building is not too large like some of the franchises and not too small, like the single carpenter working out of his pickup truck. “We are just the right size,” Ms. Marshall said. “With Marshall you’re protected and cared for, a rare combination in this industry.” And the business has generations of repeat customers to prove their approach has been a success. Ms. Marshall said the company has built thousands of relationships with homeowners across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. “Many of our customers are repeat customers or referrals from people we’ve worked with in the past,” she said. “It’s a testament to our level of work and service.” The company’s website shares a message emphasizing its approach to business: “Team Marshall are all the people who work together to create the most beautiful roofing, siding, and window installations in RI and MA. It’s our family, our staff, our crews, and most importantly, it’s you, our customers. Behind every flawless installation, behind every gorgeous home transformation, and behind the success of our company, is teamwork and Team Marshall.”

A family agency, with a personal touch Mateus Realty embodies a family atmosphere, with two generations (times two) working together as a team For some family-run businesses, balancing work and personal lives can seem like a challenge. This is not the case for Mateus Realty Luis Mateus is the owner/ broker of Mateus Realty, working alongside his son, Jeff, who joined the business a few years ago. Luis has been in the industry since 1975, and his knowledge and expertise are unmatched. With technological innovations now so critical to the real estate market, Jeff has infused a lot of his own expertise and modern technologies. Put the two together, and you’ve got the recipe for a successful operation.

“I like to meet with the buyer and seller face to face, instead of just over email.” LUIS MATEUS

Given that the two are from different generations, they may do things differently. “I like to meet with the buyer and seller face to face, instead of just over email,” Luis said. His consistent hard work has built a superb reputation in the real estate community. Luis is hands-on, tries to give the best service, and goes the extra mile to make everything work for his clients. Jeff does the same, even if father and son have different styles. In this agency, Luis and Jeff are not the only family duo. Pam Reis has been with Mateus Realty since 1991, and she now works alongside her son, Paul, who recently joined the team. Given the time, devotion and years of hard work it takes to build a business, there will of course be sacrifices along the way. Luis said that burden has often fallen on his wife, who has been incredibly supportive throughout his journey, when he’s had to miss some family parties and other get-togethers. “I like to separate the two, and try not

The veteran team at Mateus Realty includes Jeff Mateus, Pam Reis and Luis Mateus (left to right). to take business home,” Luis said, but it is inevitable in the real estate market. Realtors like Luis, Jeff, Pam and Paul know that their clients come first, day or night. With decades of experience in East Providence, the agency is obviously a leader in that market, but their knowledge extends far beyond the city. Mateus regularly works with clients in Providence, Seekonk, Pawtucket, North Providence and beyond. They are also adept at helping any type of client, from firsttime homebuyers to multi-family investors, builders, commercial buyers, and sellers of any kind. They also work with a group of investors willing to buy any property, in any condition, especially if they can help someone through a difficult situation. Many will say, “family and business don’t mix,” but Mateus is one of the fine local businesses to disprove that cliché. The Matues team doesn’t just work, it works well together. The story of Mateus Realty is one built on family, with local experts helping families through the big transitions in life.

Collectively, they have more than 80 years of experience working together in the local real estate market.

A gem of a business, since 1905 When you walk into Plante Jewelers you can expect to see Pierre, Nancy or their son, Marcel Plante. The three of them make up the Plante Jewelers team, along with their jeweler, Steve. All three members of the Plante family have degrees in art and a strong sense of design and color. Pierre has more than 40 years of experience in gems and jewelry, and was “trained on the bench,” which provides him with the practical knowledge of how jewelry needs to be made to ensure top quality, no matter the project. The family takes great pride in offering an unusual assortment of jewelry, including collections from local Rhode Island and Massachusetts artists, a variety of in house creations, including colored gem pieces, and hand engraving services. Perhaps best of all, they offer the opportunity to create custom pieces. The Plantes enjoy working with their clientele on custom projects, and Nancy emphasizes their love of “putting together the unusual things.” Even if a client isn’t entirely sure what they’re looking for yet, by just coming in and speaking with the team, they may get new ideas, and be exposed to concepts or gems they may not have thought about before, ultimately figuring out what is most important to them when it comes to the design. These custom projects can be a new piece from scratch, or even a ‘restyling’, which can include resetting a gem or pendant, or incorporating various gems you already have into an entirely new piece. Nancy notes this comes in handy particularly with inherited family heirlooms, and being trusted with sentimental treasures is something they don’t take lightly. She explains that many times inherited pieces may not be quite to a person’s style, but can be reworked into something they’ll love wearing. While the store showcases an extensive selection of colored gems, Nancy notes that they are particularly proud of their collection of rare sapphires. Interestingly, sapphires are second only to diamonds in hardness, and come in a variety of colors besides their more commonly known blue tones. You may be surprised to know that

Gil’s — One name says it all, for two generations and six decades For more than sixty years, Gil’s Appliances, a family-owned and operated retailer with locations in Bristol and Middletown, has been proudly serving customers in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Co-owners and sisters, Lisa Sienkiewicz and Gail Parella, quite literally grew up in the business started by their parents, Gil and Sarah Almeida, in 1961. The Almeida family lived in an apartment upstairs from their original store on Wood Street in Bristol. In 1976, their parents moved the business to its current, larger location on Metacom Avenue, and in 1995, Lisa and Gail took over the business from their parents and raised their own families within the walls of Gil’s, just as their parents did. In 2016, Gil's opened a second retail showroom on Aquidneck Island in Middletown. And in 2017, they completed a renovation and expansion of their Bristol location, nearly doubling their showroom space while adding a working kitchen for cooking demonstrations and special events as part of their Gil’s Loves Local initiative that supports and promotes local chefs, farms, and artisans from around the state. Over the years Lisa and Gail watched

Co-owners and sisters, Gail Parella (left) and Lisa Sienkiewicz, inside their modern showroom. as their parents nurtured relationships with people in their store and community. Today Lisa and Gail strive to be that same reassuring and supportive

presence by being both reliable and trustworthy retailers, as well as proud supporters of the communities they serve. From corporate sponsorship of

local youth sports teams and community festivals, to donations for school and community groups, Gil’s is committed to supporting family and community values. They are proud of their philanthropic partnerships with local organizations such as RI Child & Family, Star Kidz, Lucy’s Hearth, Sophia Academy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, Blithewold, and the Bristol Fourth of July Committee. Family and community values have always played an important role in their business strategy and they are proud to be a multi-generational local family business that can thrive in an age of big box stores and online shopping. And so while they have had to adjust their business strategies to remain competitive in an ever-changing retail world, Lisa and Gail are careful to ensure that their core family values remain intact. They believe that “family owned” is more than an advertising slogan. It means operating their business with integrity, building relationships and earning the trust of their customers, and providing value and personalized customer service every step of the way.

Grace Barker Health prioritizes quality of care Three generations of Warren caregivers treat your family like family Ben Lescault, assistant administrator of Grace Barker Health, recalled sitting outside of the The Coffee Depot in downtown Warren. Multiple people driving by who had utilized services at Grace Barker noticed and waved to him, recognizing him and the motorcycle he rides parked nearby. “It seems like such a small thing,” he said in reflection. “But to me, if I were to know who was actually taking care of my parents, that would sit better with me.” In a way, this anecdote sums up the mission of Grace Barker, and why Mr. Lescault will soon assume the role of administrator of the Warren-based provider of senior health services — the third generation of his family to do so. His mother and father are the director of nursing, and the current administrator, respectively. “The biggest thing is that we’re here,” Mr. Lescault said. “I’m here and accessible, my parents are here and accessi-

We’ve had the same main staff for years. We’re all local, we all live close.”

Started as a nursing home in 1966 by Ben’s grandmother, Linda Machado,

Grace Barker has since expanded into two main facilities, both located on the same campus. “The Cove” provides long-term care and short-term rehabilitation services, while “The Willows” provides assisted living and adult day health programs. Both facilities provide the option for home caregivers to receive respite services. Hospice care is also available. As one of the few family-owned and operated elder care facilities left in Rhode Island, Grace Barker continues to embrace its core values. Rather than focus on trying to lure in families with glitzy amenities and polished furnishings, they rely on the simple concept of operating with compassion and kindness for their residents. “The focus isn’t on how big you can possibly be or how shiny everything is, it’s about how well can you deliver the care,” Mr. Lescault said. “With us, providing the best possible care we can has always been one of our staples. Our motto is, ‘When you care about the care.’ ” To inquire about services, call 401245-9100 or visit GraceBarkerHealth. com.

From the basement of their home, to four clinics The story of Healy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, a family-owned and operated practice For 31 years, Dr. Michael Healy and Rosa Healy have happily stood side-byside as husband and wife. During that time, they raised four children together and worked hand-in-hand to build a successful business from the ground up. Healy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine was built on a dream, and the foundation of the business was formed in the basement of the Healy’s home in East Providence. For Dr. Michael Healy, that dream dates back to his high school years. The 1982 East Providence High School graduate was a three-sport athlete who found a passion for sports medicine. In college, Michael found his calling – physical therapy. Being a true Townie, he made it his goal to open his own physical therapy practice in his hometown of East Providence. Then, as Michael and Rosa found each other, his goal became their goal as they married and started a family. For several years, as a licensed physical therapist, Michael refined his advanced manual therapy skills. In the late ’90s, Michael began treating people in the basement of his home. With every patient he helped find pain relief, another came looking for help. As this was happening, Rosa worked tirelessly behind the scenes handling administrative tasks and furthering her education. In 2003, with the encouragement of

The East Providence clinic, one of four across Rhode Island. friends, family and patients, Healy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine was born. Since then, with Dr. Michael Healy as President/CEO and Rosa Healy as Vice President of Administration, the practice has expanded from one clinic to four. Healy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine now has locations in East Providence, East Greenwich, Cumberland, and Warwick, RI. Today, Dr. Michael Healy continues to treat patients while Rosa Healy handles many of the company’s day-today operations.

Grapic Ink proves that hard work pays off Run by a nephew and aunt, family business has been connected to the community for almost 25 years Built and maintained by the nephew-aunt duo of Nelson Silva and Hilda Allienello since it opened in 1997, Graphic Ink is fast approaching its 25th anniversary of operations from its oneand-only location at 629 Warren Ave. Graphic Ink began as Mr. Silva, a born and bred "Townie" and a 1990 East Providence High School grad, wanted to venture out on his own after 10 years in the industry and Mrs. Allienello, still a city resident, was seeking a sound business opportunity. It’s paid off for both for now nearly a quarter century. Key to the Graphic Ink model is how it operates, everything is self-contained in-house where the company does screen printing and embroidery of promotional products from t-shirts to jackets to uniform, cups, pens, golf balls, etc. Mr. Silva refers to his product line as “advertising specialities.” Typi-

customers. The company has supplied all three East Providence-based Little Leagues and currently works with 11 locally. And it’s been a lead sponsor of the E.P. Recreation Department’s annual Dolly Searle golf tournament for the last 20 years. It also serves several colleges in the area, including Brown University, which is one of its biggest clients. Graphic Ink is a licensed supplier by the NCAA. “I’ve been doing this for over 30 years and I still love what I do,” Mr. Silva said. “And that’s important to me because seeing our work out there in the community makes me very proud. It makes me proud to see us providing t-shirts or uniforms or masks for the city of East Providence. It is rewarding in that aspect…I consider myself lucky that there’s a lot of work coming in. It’s been a good concept and hard work pays off.” Graphic Ink can be reached by phone 401-431-5081, email sales@graphicinkonline.com or by visiting graphicinkonline.com. Their customers warm right up to the personal approach Over the last two years, home improvement has become a priority of more than a few people – with the pandemic and quarantine, people have really seen the value in investing in their living spaces. Fireplace Showcase helps their customers warm up the inside of their homes with their variety of fireplaces, pellet and wood stoves, and inserts. They’ve recently expanded into outdoor products, including the Big Green Egg, pellet grills, and also firepits, pizza ovens, and swingsets. Kyle Titsworth, the oldest of their three sons, now works for the family business as well. “Some of the people that I work with have known me since I was 5 years old. When they built the building in the back, [my brothers and I] would rollerskate on the warehouse floor, and now it’s a place I go every day to work,” he said, before going on to list the impressive longevity of Fireplace Showcase employees – which speaks largely to the work culture his parents have cultivated.

A family partner for generations of painters Looking to paint your dining room? Mount Hope Paint & Decorating can help you find the perfect color to complement the china you just inherited from Grandma. Need a DIY project that keeps the kids busy, too? Perhpas it's time to try Mount Hope Paint & Decorating’s chalkboard or dry erase paint. Can’t decide which stain is best for your home’s exterior? The staff at Mount Hope Paint & Decorating takes the guess work out of those decisions. When owner A.J. Santoro bought the store, on Metacom Avenue, from Junie Ferro 11 years ago, he knew he wanted to expand its services, so he changed the name and began offering Benjamin Moore paint, supplies, hardware, decorative items and more. Santoro, the longtime owner of Primeco Painting, said when he first opened Mount Hope Paint & Decorating, he was a little worried other painting contractors wouldn’t want to come to a shop owned by a competitor. “But I give all my painters a ton of referrals,” Santoro said. And as a contractor himself, he knows exactly what contractors need from a paint store. Store manager Jeff Szczepanek is no stranger to family business. He came to Mount Hope last year from Quality Paint and Wallpaper in Barrington, his family’s store, when his brother decided to retire and sell the business. Szczepanek, who has 40 years of retail experience, brings a wealth of painting knowledge to Mount Hope, and knows just how important the personal touch of a small town, family-run store is for customers. Rounding out the crew at Mount Hope Paint & Decorating is Santoro’s brother-in-law, Greg Sullivan, who retired last year from the Herald News in Fall River. Sullivan’s interviewing and observation skills, honed after 36 years as a sports reporter, have translated easily to top-notch customer service. From big-time contractors to local do-it-yourselfers, community support has been tremendous, Santoro said. Describing Mount Hope Paint & Decorating as “a mini ‘Cheers’ ” — the TV bar “where everybody knows your name” — Santoro said customers have been known to stop by with fresh blueberry muffins, or even a special soap that soothes poison ivy. This is the type of atmosphere that sets Mount Hope Paint & Decorating apart from the big box stores.

McLane is a family agency, inside and out This family insurance agency is led by two generations of McLanes, with father, brother and sister successfully balancing work lives and personal lives When it comes to the McLane family, insurance runs in the blood. Gary McLane grew up in an insurance family, as his father Joe was an Allstate agent for 34 years. In 1979, Gary began his insurance career by working for a competitor of his father as an agent for Nationwide Insurance and then opened his first office in Riverside, R.I. in 1981. Brad McLane knew from an early age that he wanted to follow in his grandfather and father’s footsteps working in the insurance business and joined the agency as a young man in 2001. Brittany McLane Dumontier on the other hand never thought she would be interested in a career in insurance. Fortunately for the family, and for Brittany, there was an opening in the agency in 2009 when Brittany was beginning her career. She joined her father and brother in a line of work she has come to love. “No, it didn’t sound too exciting when I was young. I said I was never going to do this,” Brittany says today. “But today I really enjoy what I do. We all enjoy coming to work.” As young adults, Brittney McLane Dumontier (left) and Brad McLane (center) both came to work with their father, Gary Today Brittany, her brother Brad, McLane, who started the family-owned insurance agency 40 years ago. A third generation, and a 21st-century approach to energy For three generations, Sunshine Fuels & Energy Services has been servicing the people around Rhode Island with unbeatable home comfort services and high-quality products. Starting in 1938, Manuel Januario started an ice and kerosene business with his three sons. They solely sold those two products for nearly ten years until Manuel’s sons, Tony, Joe, and Manny, moved the

business into heating oil. They installed oil-fired heating systems and made fuel oil deliveries throughout the area, providing friendly service with a professional touch. In 1963, the company moved from the family basement on State Street to its current location on Metacom Avenue in Bristol, where they continued to provide outstanding service. But now with the next generation taking the helm, Ken, Steve, and Mike Jauario pushed Sunshine Oil into its next step in life, becoming Sunshine Fuels and Energy Services. They developed and expanded their services, adding installation and service of natural gas and propane heating systems, propane delivery, Generac and Kohler standby generators and Napoleon gas grills and flame tables. Keeping with the family tradition, they have continued to change with the times. With the business growing, more space was needed and they found the perfect spot just down the street at 280 Franklin St. Their offices moved in June and eventually all operations will be on Franklin Street. When asked about Sunshine’s impact on the environment, Steve and Mike were quick to explain how technology and changes in the fuel and equipment have resulted in a positive change in the environmental impact for the home heating market. “Every time we put in a heating system, we’re cutting fuel usage by 20 to 30 percent.” The Januario brothers also

explained how there is a path to a renewable carbon free fuel by 2050. Today they deliver 5% Bio-Heat. By 2023, the will be at 10%, 2025 20% and 2030 a 40% Bio-Heat blend. There is also Bio-propane being developed. It can be tricky to run a business with family. Steve and Mike described owning a family business as a lifestyle. Ken retired a couple of years ago but still lends a hand when needed. “There’s no pettiness. We have a common goal, and that’s for the business to do well,” and the customer comes first. Today Sunshine Fuel & Energy Services is in the home comfort business, whether it is heating your home or providing backup power. As times change, they will be there for their customers to provide professional home comfort services.

A success story, from one generation to the next Brougham Motors is lead by a brother-sister team who learned the business from their parents If you wrote the ideal script for a family business, it would read a lot like the story of Brougham Motors. Husband and wife start a very small business in the 1960s. He runs one part of the business; she runs the other. Their children grow up learning the business, graduate high school, and begin working with Mom and Dad full-time. Eventually, the kids learn the business so well, they can run it without Mom and Dad, who begin taking some time off, enjoy their older years, travel, and get a place in Florida for the winter.

“For all those years, my Dad and I were the team for running the shop, and my sister and my Mom were the team in the office running the business and the customer service.”

The Ponte family have been running the Brougham Motors enterprise for more than 50 years. These days, Meredith, David Jr. and Tracey (left to right) are continuing the tradition started by David and Tracey’s parents.

DAVID PONTE JR.

After that long transition period, the kids are ready to take over fulltime, the parents are ready to retire, and the second generation picks up and builds the future for the family business. That is the story of Brougham Motors — which not only followed the ideal family script, but also grew in size, in employees (from 2 to 10), and most importantly, in reputation. Brougham, which began as an auto repair shop with three garage stalls, is now a leader in auto collision repair, with a large, modern facility capable of handling any job. David Ponte Jr. and Tracey Ponte are the brother-sister team now running the state-of-the-art business. They grew up learning from David and Nancy Ponte, who opened the shop in 1968. David passed away a few years ago, but Nancy still helps out when she can. David’s daughter, Meredith, is now part of the team,

too. David Jr. runs the shop (much like his Dad once did), and Tracey runs the business and the customer side of things (much like her Mom once did). Meredith works with both her aunt and her father, doing anything from repair estimates to ordering parts or connecting with customers. For five decades, the family dynamic at Brougham has been the easiest part of the business. “We really gelled well,” says David

Jr. “For all those years, my Dad and I were the team for running the shop, and my sister and my Mom were the team in the office running the business and the customer service. We always got along. Our personalities just sort of worked.” Both David Jr. and Tracey say they love what they do — for each, this has been their one and only job. The business has a sterling reputation throughout the area, particularly in the suburbs of Fall River, like

Westport, where both David and Tracey live. They’ve also developed a niche in a very particular market — working to repair and restore classic cars. It’s time-consuming, and it takes particular skills and knowledge, and Brougham is one of the best at working with the classics. Of course, that’s not surprising, since Brougham itself is a classic story of family, of business, and of success.

Riccotti’s: All in the family for 50 years

Legendary sandwich shop has been serving Bristol and beyond since 1971

Les and Joanne Hubbard recently came up from Florida to check in on family members, and where did they find them? Stacking sandwiches at Riccotti’s in Bristol, of course. The Hubbards opened Riccotti’s Sandwich Shop, located at 11 Gooding Ave., way back in 1971. A newspaper ad from that year, touting “25 different varieties of sandwiches including a 2-1/2-foot-long special,” announced its grand opening on Oct. 30. Les and Joanne’s daughter, Kathy Howarth, is now the owner, which means the business has stayed in the family for 50 years. “You don’t find many restaurants last this long, never mind owed by the same family,” said Les. “My boys grew up here and worked with me, and it was a good way to raise my kids,” added Kathy, who started working at Riccotti’s when she was 13. When Joanne stepped into Riccotti’s during her recent visit, she was proud to see it “looking so beautiful.” Her husband agreed. “Not much has changed, really. The building’s the same,” Les said. They had a shop in Boston many years ago, but the Hubbards decided to start a new submarine sandwich shop in Rhode Island along with five other partners. Other Riccotti’s still exist in North Providence, Warwick and Johnston, but they’re all independent from one another. Les remembers working a couple of years straight before taking a day off. “Even on Christmas when we were closed, I’d come in and do the floors,” he said. The biggest-sellers back in his day are probably the same as today — Italian grinders, meatball sandwiches and the tuna fish, he said. (For the record, Kathy and her son, Ben Howarth, both prefer the Turkey Special, Joanne’s favorite is the Italian, while Les loves the tuna fish.) But the menu has gotten much bigger, he noted. Spinach and chourico pies, along with other favorites, were added years later. Ben and Kathy credit Riccotti’s loyal and hard-working staff for much of its success. “I like the staff here,” said Ben. “I think we have a good group of friendly people who really do their best every day. I like the community; you get to

I’ve been here since I was 14 and I’ve known them for so long. I lot of them feel like family.” The shop typically has about 22 employees working every day, with up to 12 handling the busiest shifts. Kathy said it’s not a job you can manage without a strong, supportive staff, and for that she’s grateful. “My employees have been with me forever. I wouldn’t want to do it without them. You need a lot of good people around you who care

Members of Riccotti’s staff take a quick break between customers to pose for a photo behind the counter. “You need a lot of good people around you who care about it as much as you do, and I have that. I’m lucky.” Riccotti’s switched to curbside service during much of COVID, and customers kept coming in. “It was the best way for us at the time to minimize the risk and stay open. We’re very fortunate that we’re mainly a takeout business model anyway, and we have the parking lot to support it,” said Ben, who

urges customers to order online at www.riccottisbristol.com. “It’s really easy and makes things a lot more efficient for us.” Joanne said it was wonderful to see customers keep coming back despite the pandemic. “They are loyal people,” she said. Added Les: “Well, they’re hungry!”

Rhode Island’s oldest home delivery dairy — Family owned and family operated, since 1881 Family, in every sense of the word, is at the heart of the Munroe Dairy and Sacred Cow Farm Market and Ice Cream Parlor. Owner Rob Armstrong’s grandfather Robert (Bob) Armstrong purchased the dairy in 1936 from Alfred Bliss Munroe, who founded it in 1881. Rob’s father Robert (Bud) took over from Bob and ran the dairy until he retired; his siblings, too, worked for the family business, with his brother Kenny spending his entire career at Munroe. Rob has been running the show since the early 1990s. You don’t have to be an Armstrong to be family — not only has the dairy been blessed with loyal employees, many of them have brought their own family members into the Munroe family, with multiple generations working together. Beginning in the late 1980’s, their home delivery offerings expanded beyond their milk, sourced from a co-op of family farms that use no growth hormones or antibiotics. Today, they offer over 200 home delivery items to more than 12,000 homes. With 30 trucks on the road 5 days a week, they have been able to maintain the same high level customer service that

Though Munroe Dairy has grown over the years, growth has been slow and steady. “That’s Rob’s way, and it has worked really well,” said Maureen Maloney, Rob’s longtime partner and creator of one of Munroe’s newer product additions, Sacred Cow Granola. A private

brand of Munroe Dairy and one of the first products made in house, Sacred Cow became part of the Munroe family because Rob asked for it. “He decided he wanted a great granola to go with his incredible milk,” said Maureen. “So we started working on recipes, and hit on it after about a year.” That was about 7 years ago. Since then, the Sacred Cow brand

has taken off. A kitchen and market were added, featuring many products by small, local makers. In addition to the granola, some items including hot fudge and chocolate chip cookies are made in house to accompany their delicious ice cream, a private label made by Warwick Ice Cream with their ultra-fresh Munroe Dairy cream — 48 hours from moo to you!
