A credit union helping its community The Community & Teachers Federal Credit Union started out, as all credit unions do, with a few people (in this case, teachers) who decided to pool their funds together so that when one of the members needed to borrow money for a home, car, etc., they could borrow it from the “pool” at a reasonable rate of interest. Back then, banks were not interested in helping the “little guy,” and to borrow from money-lenders, people were charged an exorbitant rate of interest. By saving together and lending to one another, they cold afford to have their share of the “American Dream.” In the ’70s, there were credit union leagues in every state, a national credit union association, as well as a world association of credit unions. All federal credit unions continued to be run by a volunteer board of directors. The credit committee and supervisory committee are also volunteers. What started out as a simple operation out of renovated chicken coop has since transformed into a two-location, globally-attracting destination in Flo’s Clam Shack and Drive-In. Ever since the first Flo’s opened in Island Park in 1936 (making it one of the oldest clam shacks in the country), followed a few decades later by the Middletown clam shack in 1991, tourists and residents alike have flocked to its doors for their coveted fried clams and clam cakes. Since taking ownership of Flo’s in 1978, Komes Rozes has kept the original recipes virtually the same, emphasizing quality ingredients: everything is fresh and made-to-order, with a private supplier bringing in fresh quahogs daily. “We’re getting the best in the world from Narragansett Bay,” Mr. Rozes said. Open seasonally March through the end of October, Flo’s can see upwards of 6,000 customers a week at either location. Both operate as a no-frills type establishment; with no silver or glassware available and orders served on paper plates — it is “fine fast food,” as Mr. Rozes calls it. “It’s like, ‘get your order and have a nice day,’ ” he joked. In addition to the classic favorites, Flo’s has plenty of additional offerings, from seafood platters and ‘lobsta’ rolls, to homemade ‘chowda’ (“it’s creamy, not cement”) and — at their shack location — even a raw bar. As far as Mr. Rozes knows, nothing has

Over the years, Flo’s has received a variety of honors and recognition, from Best Fried Clams to mentions in the New York Times. Maintaining the success of Flo’s has not always been easy. Hurricane after hurricane has come sweeping in, knocking Flo’s off its feet on more than one occasion. Yet it never stays down for long, always finding a way to rebuild. Every season it is worth it, though, as the customers once again come rolling in —some Mr. Rozes has known for generations. “It’s a lot of work,” he said, “but it’s a lot of fun.”

Blount Boats — Living a legacy Stretching six acres along one of the last remaining working waterfronts, the Blount Boats shipyard has been a staple in the Warren community since 1949. To President Marcia Blount, it’s simply home. “We were born here, grew up here,” she said. “We have deep roots in this community.” Now in their 70th year in business, she and her siblings, Julie and Nancy, are taking a look back at their father, founder Luther Blount’s, legacy as they continue moving forward, full steam ahead. To date, Blount has constructed from-scratch more than 370 steel and aluminum commercial vessels — from crew boats and harbor tugs, to passenger ferries and oil skimmers — none larger than 220 feet. Some are of their own design — such as the recently-delivered “Isle of Fire” hull for Fire Island Ferries — while others are a collaborative effort with partnering naval architects, as is the case with their in-progress production of a harbor tug boat for the New York Power Authority. Though the projects are typically 12-month, one-and-done builds for the company, each and every one has a certain Blount touch to them that sets them apart from other vessels. Sometimes it may be the break in the ship’s bow; others, the roof lines along the pilot house. “If I go to a harbor, I can always pick out our boats,” Ms. Blount said. The major difference, however, is the quality and care that go into constructing each vessel. Once a Blount Boat makes its way into the water, it can last for decades. The Miss Liberty, delivered in 1954, is thought to be their oldest ship still running, continuing to this day to take passengers to the Statue of Liberty. One of Ms. Blount’s favorites, the Riveranda, is also still in service 35 years later, today now operated by Boston Harbor Cruises. That same energy and attention to detail are put into their more recent projects, like the 2016 “Atlantic Pioneer,” the country’s first flagged windfarm vessel — a kind of boat Ms. Blount hopes the company can build more of soon. “We have a really formidable reputa-

Yet the atmosphere surrounding the family-run shipyard itself is fairly relaxed. Employees are known to stay for years, and before each vessel is even delivered, they gather for a ‘proper’ blessing and christening of the ship. “A boat does not hit the water until we’ve properly smashed the champagne bottle,” said Ms. Blount. ‘Irish roots with a rock ’n roll attitude’
Exciting changes are on the way for Dublin Rose Irish Sports Pub
For six years, the Dublin Rose Irish Sports Pub has stood out among the row of chain restaurants lining either side of Rt. 6 in Seekonk. Designed by Food Network and HGTV-featured interior designer Taniya Nayak and located next to Clarion Inn, the independently-owned establishment was already unique with its open-late, banquet-quality kitchen dishing out traditional pub and Irish fare with flair. Yet managing partner Tyler Almeida could see that the Dublin Rose was capable of doing so much more. “Everything was sort of getting stale,” he admitted. “We’re working hard to implement fresh, new creative ideas.” Those changes have been coming in full force this summer, beginning with the launch of their new brunch menu and craft beer list, with specialty craft cocktails, $8.99 lunch specials and, yes, even a dog-friendly menu still yet to come. Many of the new additions are inspired from the time Mr. Almeida spent in California, where local craft beer ruled the food and beverage scene. “In San Diego, nobody drank anything other than local craft beers,” he said. He brought that concept back to New England, and — putting it in line with what customers back home were asking for — launched a new seasonal craft beer menu that featured numerous Massachusetts and Rhode Island brews, including Harpoon, Whalers, Wormtown, as well as crowd-pleasers Narragansett and Sam Adams. Still in the experimental stage are the barrel-aged specialty craft cocktails — house-made recipes in custom-charred barrels, soaked for a minimum of two weeks. “They are being aged as we speak,” Mr. Almeida said. Once he and his staff agree on their favorites, the drinks will be available to order, served in a double rocks glass with a giant ice cube. After launching their brunch menu last month, Mr. Almeida has already found their brunch cocktail offerings to be popular

A city of pride, a city on the rise The city of East Providence’s move to elect its first ever mayor has not only brought change to the way the city is run, but it has created additional opportunity for Mayor Bob DaSilva to work collaboratively with City Council members and residents to boost economic development and continue to attract people who want to live, work and raise their families in the city. DaSilva has a vision to bolster development of the waterfront district, breathe new life into the Taunton Avenue area and create an arts and entertainment district. Part of making that vision a reality is reminding entrepreneurs, developers and prospective business owners that the city of East Providence is not only business friendly – it offers a tax abatement program, low-interest loans, and streamlines the development process – it’s a city where current and future employees will want to work and live. The city’s waterfront district presents one of the most exciting growth opportunities in the region. The aged, industrial waterfront is transforming into a burgeoning mixed-use district with residential, business and open space opportunities. “It’s my goal to see the waterfront district flourish into one of the top-tier destinations in our state,” DaSilva said. “With successes like Bold Point Park and the new 90,000-square-foot University Orthopedics medical office and surgical center, our city is proving that it can compete with other Rhode Island cities as an entertainment venue and as a home to businesses large and small.” With development also come job opportunities. University Orthopedics has brought approximately 100 employees to the site, with plans to add more workers in the future. “In addition, the federal government will be investing $54.5 million in much needed improvements to the Henderson Bridge, which will create better access to Waterfront Drive and our waterfront district as a whole,” DaSilva said. “The transformation will allow residents of the state and the region to benefit from what will be a destination spot.” While there’s a lot of excitement sur-

Both have the potential to become economic engines while also maintaining their historical importance to the city and state. An example of that is Ivy Place, which
is slated to include 14 condominiums and 2,000 square feet of retail space. The city is also taking proactive measures to ensure that the sale of its surplus properties will provide flexibility for developers, while also encouraging uses that will revitalize the area. As an example, an approximate 19,000-square-foot parcel on Bullocks Point Avenue in Riverside is for sale by
the city. The parcel is located in an overlay district that allows for mixeduse development. The overlay district will encourage economic and social vitality to Riverside, which has experienced a number of underutilized properties since the last recession. For example, it encourages a link to the East Bay Pike Path and allows the street frontage to be treated as a public space with streetscape enhancements to promote public transit and pedestrian travel. Riverside Square is already starting to see the benefits and will soon see new landscaping, art sculptures and welcoming signs, thanks to city funds and grant dollars secured by the city’s Community Development division. Development will continue throughout the city under DaSilva’s administration, as will an emphasis on education, recreation and the arts. Families in East Providence will benefit from the construction of a new $189 million state-of-the-art high school, which broke ground in June, plans to build a new recreation center, and a focus to expand the arts in the community. “A city is not only defined by its economic success,” DaSilva said. “I believe a city should offer people a great place to get an education, to live and to play.”

Redwood Nursery can plan and plant your dream garden It’s very fitting that words of advice for gardeners should come from the folks at Redwood Nursery and Garden Center in Swansea. Founder Manuel Vales has a long history of gardening, since the early ’60s, when he was groundskeeper for Blithewold. The late Blithewold owner, Marjorie Lyon, made Manuel a bequest so he could start his own business, and he did. He named the nursery Redwood, after a seedling he planted from the giant sequoia still growing on the Blithewold grounds. Today, a dedicated knowledgeable team that includes Manuel’s wife, Jacqueline Vales, and their children, are kept very busy with the full-service garden center operation and planting division run by manager and part-owner Jacqueline, assistant manager John Whitney, assistant manager and head landscape designer Jarred Lynch, along with key Redwood team members Norma McNally, John Conlley, Ben Holtzman, Tracey Berube, Lory Cummings, Mark Bergeron, Gail Brodeur, Lynn McCoombs, Penny Lachmann, Kate Ferguson and Kristen Kearney, who all love to assist clients with design, plant selection and planting, and love to share their extensive plant and landscape expertise. Redwood Landscaping and Property Maintenance, run by Lisa Vales, Moses Camara, Joe Campos and Joe Martin, can handle any job big or small. And Manuel still keeps a watchful eye on all things. Redwood Nursery, over the more than 40 years it has been in business, has grown from a small plot of land to more than two acres of exhibit space for landscape size trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. Safe, enriching programs for children at the YMCA The Newman and Bayside branches of the YMCA of Greater Providence offer before and after school programming through the Out of School Time (OST) program for children in kindergarten through middle school as well as summer camp. OST Programs are held at their branches, as well as at convenient school-based locations in East Providence and Barrington. All East Providence students can be serviced at these three schools, and the Y offers transportation to and from the schools. The YMCA is a charitable organization which provides scholarships for families in need. The Y will also accept income-eligible state vouchers from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. More than 80 percent of the children and families they serve will receive some sort of financial assistance or qualify for income-based rates. The goal of the OST full-inclusion program is to give all children the opportunity to be the best they can be; to build confident children today who will be contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.
