Jon Cottrell learned a long time ago how to bang nails. That’s the easy part of his business. The hard part is what’s he’s learned over 38 years in the construction industry — that home remodeling is about so much more than banging nails. It’s about changing lives.

He and his team at Cottrell Bros. are intimately aware that the most important part of their business is not physical, it’s emotional. “We’re in construction, but what do we really do? We help people. We help people take their living spaces and convert them, change them, improve them, and make them better. We take their wish list, we take their dreams, and we make them reality,” Mr. Cottrell said. Cottrell’s specialty is remodeling existing spaces — a highly emotional and personal experience for the customers. It can be stressful, exhausting and disruptive, but it can be incredibly rewarding — for both the customer and the contractor. “We love the challenge of what we do,” Mr. Cottrell said. “I honestly look forward to every job I do. It doesn’t matter if it means putting in a new door for you, or completely renovating an interior space …The challenge is getting to the end, and getting it done right, and getting the appreciation.” After nearly 40 years in the family business, Mr. Cottrell is proud to be working alongside a second generation. Sons Ross and Graham starting working with him during high school summers, and now both are key members of the team, together running Cottrell Brothers in Fairhaven,

Cottrell Brothers has followed the trends for four decades, and the trend today is familiar to most homeowners — better kitchens, better bathrooms and more space. “I see a lot of people loving where they live, but needing to make it more modern and accessible,” Mr. Cottrell said. “We do a lot of bathroom and kitchen remodeling. We’re seeing expansion of both of those areas of the house.” They also do many projects finishing basements and garages to create media centers, play rooms and additional living spaces. Mr. Cottrell said the company has worked very hard to earn an outstanding reputation over the years, and he’s proud to say most of their business comes from referrals these days. That reputation is built on the fact that they absolutely love what they do. “I’m honored, on a daily basis, to be trusted to come into your home and make a difference. To me, that’s a privilege,” he said. “How do I give back to my community? I help people. That’s my job. I don’t just do a renovation, I give you guidance. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get people to where they want to be.”

A credit union helping its community The Community & Teachers Federal Credit Union started out, as all credit unions do, with a few people (in this case, teachers) who decided to pool their funds together so that when one of the members needed to borrow money for a home, car, etc., they could borrow it from the “pool” at a reasonable rate of interest. Back then, banks were not interested in helping the “little guy,” and to borrow from money-lenders, people were charged an exorbitant rate of interest. By saving together and lending to one another, they cold afford to have their share of the “American Dream.” In the ’70s, there were credit union leagues in every state, a national credit union association, as well as a world association of credit unions. All federal credit unions continued to be run by a volunteer board of directors. The credit committee and supervisory committee are also volunteers. A few years later, we amended our charter again to include all “Townies” and their families to become members. Due to technology, we have also expanded our services to include home banking, shared branching, billpayer, investments, IRA’s, ATM’s, first and sec-ond mortages, equity lines and more. An island staple for more than 80 years

Open every day in July & August

What started out as a simple operation out of renovated chicken coop has since transformed into a two-location, globally-attracting destination in Flo’s Clam Shack and Drive-In. Ever since the first Flo’s opened in Island Park in 1936 (making it one of the oldest clam shacks in the country), followed a few decades later by the Middletown clam shack in 1991, tourists and residents alike have flocked to its doors for their coveted fried clams and clam cakes. Since taking ownership of Flo’s in 1978, Komes Rozes has kept the original recipes virtually the same, emphasizing quality ingredients: everything is fresh and made-to-order, with a private supplier bringing in fresh quahogs daily. “We’re getting the best in the world from Narragansett Bay,” Mr. Rozes said. Open seasonally March through the end of October, Flo’s can see upwards of 6,000 customers a week at either location. Both operate as a no-frills type establishment; with no silver or glassware available and orders served on paper plates — it is “fine fast food,” as Mr. Rozes calls it. “It’s like, ‘get your order and have a nice day,’ ” he joked. In addition to the classic favorites, Flo’s has plenty of additional offerings, from seafood platters and ‘lobsta’ rolls, to homemade ‘chowda’ (“it’s creamy, not cement”) and — at their shack location — even a raw bar. As far as Mr. Rozes knows, nothing has

Flo’s Clam Shack 4 Wave Ave., Middletown Park Avenue, Island Beach Park, Portsmouth flosclamshacks.com ever been market-priced, something that the majority of other clam shacks do, yet their food has always been priced competitively. Over the years, Flo’s has received a variety of honors and recognition, from Best Fried Clams to mentions in the New York Times. Maintaining the success of Flo’s has not always been easy. Hurricane after hurricane has come sweeping in, knocking Flo’s off its feet on more than one occasion. Yet it never stays down for long, always finding a way to rebuild. Every season it is worth it, though, as the customers once again come rolling in —some Mr. Rozes has known for generations. “It’s a lot of work,” he said, “but it’s a lot of fun.”

A proud family tradition For 90 years, Simpson’s Pharmacy has been serving the health care needs of Rhode Island and surrounding Massachusetts. We are third generation and independently owned. We distinguish ourselves from other pharmacies by providing a high level of personal service that cannot be duplicated anywhere. We get to know each and every one of our customers, most on a first-name basis. Our staff will make you feel at ease when you come in looking for either a specific product or advice. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask, we pride ourselves in special ordering items or suggesting helpful alternatives. Pharmacy practiced the old fashioned way, is our goal every day. Despite ever increasing technology, we still know all our customers by name, getting to know their specific needs. We answer our telephones with real people and not a voice mail system. We still practice the “art” of pharmacy by continuing to offer prescription compounding. Ask us about our medication pack-

aging system, “DISPILL,” customized for each individual and designed to help take the hassle out of taking medications. We also offer pet medications and customized compounding for your pets, with specialized flavorings such as chicken, tuna, beef or liver. Home Medical equipment and medical/surgical supplies are in stock in our large retail space, with a wide variety of items to choose from. These include wheelchairs, canes, walkers, rollators, bath safety items, crutches, lift chairs, wound care, diabetic shoes, ADL’s, etc. We bill most insurance plans for home medical equipment, on your behalf. We are your “geriatric” toy store. Open 6 days a week, we offer free delivery of prescription medications and home durable medical equipment.

Family-owned business offers full spectrum of elderly services In 1966, Linda Machado opened Grace Barker Nursing Home. A registered nurse, she named the facility for her mentor and nursing school benefactor, a woman known for her unselfish and compassionate caregiving. “I could think of no better tribute,” said Linda, “than to name it after Grace.” Today, Linda’s daughter, Mary Beth, runs the facility along with her husband, Mark Lescault. It remains family-owned at a time when corporate ownership is increasingly becoming the norm. Their son, Benjamin, is now assistant administrator, continuing the family tradition of caring for and providing elder services in the community. Benjamin recently graduated with a degree in healthcare administration and management from Salve Regina University. Residents enjoy a familiar environment of friendly staff and surroundings, enabling a smooth transition from one service area to another when

They are served by many of the same staff that provide delicious homecooked meals, nursing and rehabilitation therapy. We’re like an extension of their family,” notes Mary Beth. “It’s a level of caring and continuity that truly sets us apart.” “Linda would be pleased to see that we are still here on Barker Avenue treating residents with dignity and respect, and keeping her dream alive for generations past and present,” states Mark.

Blount Boats — Living a legacy Stretching six acres along one of the last remaining working waterfronts, the Blount Boats shipyard has been a staple in the Warren community since 1949. To President Marcia Blount, it’s simply home. “We were born here, grew up here,” she said. “We have deep roots in this community.” Now in their 70th year in business, she and her siblings, Julie and Nancy, are taking a look back at their father, founder Luther Blount’s, legacy as they continue moving forward, full steam ahead. To date, Blount has constructed from-scratch more than 370 steel and aluminum commercial vessels — from crew boats and harbor tugs, to passenger ferries and oil skimmers — none larger than 220 feet. Some are of their own design — such as the recently-delivered “Isle of Fire” hull for Fire Island Ferries — while others are a collaborative effort with partnering naval architects, as is the case with their in-progress production of a harbor tug boat for the New York Power Authority. Though the projects are typically 12-month, one-and-done builds for the company, each and every one has a certain Blount touch to them that sets them apart from other vessels. Sometimes it may be the break in the ship’s bow; others, the roof lines along the pilot house. “If I go to a harbor, I can always pick out our boats,” Ms. Blount said. The major difference, however, is the quality and care that go into constructing each vessel. Once a Blount Boat makes its way into the water, it can last for decades. The Miss Liberty, delivered in 1954, is thought to be their oldest ship still running, continuing to this day to take passengers to the Statue of Liberty. One of Ms. Blount’s favorites, the Riveranda, is also still in service 35 years later, today now operated by Boston Harbor Cruises. That same energy and attention to detail are put into their more recent projects, like the 2016 “Atlantic Pioneer,” the country’s first flagged windfarm vessel — a kind of boat Ms. Blount hopes the company can build more of soon. “We have a really formidable reputa-

Yet the atmosphere surrounding the family-run shipyard itself is fairly relaxed. Employees are known to stay for years, and before each vessel is even delivered, they gather for a ‘proper’ blessing and christening of the ship. “A boat does not hit the water until we’ve properly smashed the champagne bottle,” said Ms. Blount. Little nuances such as these that have helped differentiate Blount Boats from the rest of the industry over the years. ‘Irish roots with a rock ’n roll attitude’

Exciting changes are on the way for Dublin Rose Irish Sports Pub

For six years, the Dublin Rose Irish Sports Pub has stood out among the row of chain restaurants lining either side of Rt. 6 in Seekonk. Designed by Food Network and HGTV-featured interior designer Taniya Nayak and located next to Clarion Inn, the independently-owned establishment was already unique with its open-late, banquet-quality kitchen dishing out traditional pub and Irish fare with flair. Yet managing partner Tyler Almeida could see that the Dublin Rose was capable of doing so much more. “Everything was sort of getting stale,” he admitted. “We’re working hard to implement fresh, new creative ideas.” Those changes have been coming in full force this summer, beginning with the launch of their new brunch menu and craft beer list, with specialty craft cocktails, $8.99 lunch specials and, yes, even a dog-friendly menu still yet to come. Many of the new additions are inspired from the time Mr. Almeida spent in California, where local craft beer ruled the food and beverage scene. “In San Diego, nobody drank anything other than local craft beers,” he said. He brought that concept back to New England, and — putting it in line with what customers back home were asking for — launched a new seasonal craft beer menu that featured numerous Massachusetts and Rhode Island brews, including Harpoon, Whalers, Wormtown, as well as crowd-pleasers Narragansett and Sam Adams. Still in the experimental stage are the barrel-aged specialty craft cocktails — house-made recipes in custom-charred barrels, soaked for a minimum of two weeks. “They are being aged as we speak,” Mr. Almeida said. Once he and his staff agree on their favorites, the drinks will be available to order, served in a double rocks glass with a giant ice cube. After launching their brunch menu last month, Mr. Almeida has already found their brunch cocktail offerings to be popular

The Dublin Rose recently launched a new brunch menu, and their Bloody Mary has been a hit.

All of it is intended to pair well with their new breakfast items — ranging from the sweet caramelized banana stuffed French toast, to the savory corned beef hash — and specialty lunch sandwiches, available next month. Drinks and meals can be enjoyed inside, with viewing access to any one of their 20 TVs on game days or live music performances on weekends; or outdoors, sitting at what is evolving into their new, dog-friendly patio. “We’re having a lot of new developments in the next few weeks,” Mr. Almeida said. Though Mr. Almeida is excited about all of these updates, he maintains that Dublin Rose will continue its dedication to honoring Irish cuisine. Irish Bennies are the first item listed on the

For more than a century, Navigant Credit Union proudly serves Rhode Islanders At Navigant Credit Union, we have a whole lot to be proud of. Look at our history. We’ve been providing financial services to individuals and families for more than 104 years. Our business launched in 1915 in the basement of Notre Dame Parish in Central Falls, and now years later into one of the largest and strongest community credit unions in the country. We’re pretty proud of that. And look at our employees. Our staff members, from our leadership team to the managers and tellers at our local branches, are truly and genuinely happy. In fact, a few weeks ago, for the fifth consecutive year, we were named the #1 Best Place to Work in Rhode Island. We were founded on the belief that we should treat our employees like family. More than a century later, we’ve never lost track of that core value. We’re proud of that, too. Most importantly, though, look at

A city of pride, a city on the rise The city of East Providence’s move to elect its first ever mayor has not only brought change to the way the city is run, but it has created additional opportunity for Mayor Bob DaSilva to work collaboratively with City Council members and residents to boost economic development and continue to attract people who want to live, work and raise their families in the city. DaSilva has a vision to bolster development of the waterfront district, breathe new life into the Taunton Avenue area and create an arts and entertainment district. Part of making that vision a reality is reminding entrepreneurs, developers and prospective business owners that the city of East Providence is not only business friendly – it offers a tax abatement program, low-interest loans, and streamlines the development process – it’s a city where current and future employees will want to work and live. The city’s waterfront district presents one of the most exciting growth opportunities in the region. The aged, industrial waterfront is transforming into a burgeoning mixed-use district with residential, business and open space opportunities. “It’s my goal to see the waterfront district flourish into one of the top-tier destinations in our state,” DaSilva said. “With successes like Bold Point Park and the new 90,000-square-foot University Orthopedics medical office and surgical center, our city is proving that it can compete with other Rhode Island cities as an entertainment venue and as a home to businesses large and small.” With development also come job opportunities. University Orthopedics has brought approximately 100 employees to the site, with plans to add more workers in the future. “In addition, the federal government will be investing $54.5 million in much needed improvements to the Henderson Bridge, which will create better access to Waterfront Drive and our waterfront district as a whole,” DaSilva said. “The transformation will allow residents of the state and the region to benefit from what will be a destination spot.” While there’s a lot of excitement sur-

Earlier this year, the city and East Providence School District broke ground on a new, $189 million state-of-the-art high school.

Mayor Bob DaSilva is excited about many things happening in East Providence, including an upcoming $54.5 million upgrade to the Henderson Bridge. rounding the waterfront district, DaSilva, working with the new Council, hopes to rejuvenate the underutilized areas of East Providence, including Taunton Avenue and Riverside Square. Both have the potential to become economic engines while also maintaining their historical importance to the city and state. An example of that is Ivy Place, which

is slated to include 14 condominiums and 2,000 square feet of retail space. The city is also taking proactive measures to ensure that the sale of its surplus properties will provide flexibility for developers, while also encouraging uses that will revitalize the area. As an example, an approximate 19,000-square-foot parcel on Bullocks Point Avenue in Riverside is for sale by

the city. The parcel is located in an overlay district that allows for mixeduse development. The overlay district will encourage economic and social vitality to Riverside, which has experienced a number of underutilized properties since the last recession. For example, it encourages a link to the East Bay Pike Path and allows the street frontage to be treated as a public space with streetscape enhancements to promote public transit and pedestrian travel. Riverside Square is already starting to see the benefits and will soon see new landscaping, art sculptures and welcoming signs, thanks to city funds and grant dollars secured by the city’s Community Development division. Development will continue throughout the city under DaSilva’s administration, as will an emphasis on education, recreation and the arts. Families in East Providence will benefit from the construction of a new $189 million state-of-the-art high school, which broke ground in June, plans to build a new recreation center, and a focus to expand the arts in the community. “A city is not only defined by its economic success,” DaSilva said. “I believe a city should offer people a great place to get an education, to live and to play.”

Did you know that the yoga word we translate as “meditate” doesn't actually mean being mindful? In fact, the yoga word samyama means “wholehearted”—live from your heart not from your head. Instead of ‘sitting down to meditate’, you are better off being “wholehearted” during all of your life activities. Now, how does one become “wholehearted”, you might ask? Well, think of your heart just like a garden hose. If a hose becomes kinked because of carelessness, water does not flow through it. Over time, a kinked hose becomes so brittle from strain, that it breaks. Your heart is the same. If you don't care for it, or if you stress it and strain it too often, it too will kink and break.

Barrington Fitness, putting the client first “I cannot overstate the benefits of proper exercise,” says Michael Correira, owner of Barrington Fitness. After 40, the body loses approximately 10 percent of its muscle mass every 10 years, which slows down the metabolism, leading to an increase of fat in the body’s overall composition. This, Correira says, is “a recipe for disaster when it comes to mobility and sustainability in independent living.” To combat this, Barrington Fitness uses resistance training as the foundation of their exercise program, especially when helping adults escape this spiral. Trainers at Barrington Fitness focus on the strength and balance of their older clients, so they can remain independent for as long as possible. As Correira puts it, “One of the biggest fears senior citizens have is to wind up in a nursing home.” Barrington Fitness clients are anywhere from 15 to 90-plus years old. In many cases, those in their eighties or nineties have been training on their personalized plan for 10 years or more and are in outstanding physical condi-

Barrington Fitness is passionate about giving seniors the opportunity to not only “live long, but be in the proper condition to enjoy it.” To get active, lower your risk of virtually every disease, and prevent muscle loss, Correira recommends as little as 30 minutes per week of proper resistance training with a personal trainer. The expert personal trainers at Barrington Fitness craft a personalized training plan alongside certified nutritionists, doctors and clients from both diet and activity perspectives. In the gym, trainers do their best to make the client feel comfortable, often making sure they will have the gym to themselves to put self-conscious clients at

ease and prevent the intimidation one may feel in a typical gym. When joining, he said, the client’s condition will be comprehensively

evaluated to ensure the best experience possible. “You really matter,” he said. “Your goals really matter.”

Experience, skill and expertise light up Chris Electric When asked what makes Chris Electric stand out among similar businesses in the area, managing partner Don Cordeiro attributes their success to the connection the crew has with their customers. He says when a customer calls, they “are talking to one of the owners, not a manager that has no ties to the company besides their position. This personal relationship is in part responsible for the “sterling reputation the company has developed over the years. Today, the firm is run by Don Cordeiro and Chris Healy, who both have more than 15 years of experience in the business. Rhode Island native Christopher Kalil founded Chris Electric in 1982 but has recently retired. He leaves the business to his partners, Cordeiro and Healy, who are both master electricians, the most senior level in their profession. Mr. Cordeiro says the owners regularly go out into the field, being “handson all the way around, servicing mostly residential and small commercial properties. Chris Electric does every-

thing from installing Google Nest in vacation homes, to servicing, maintaining and doing warranty repairs on Generac generators. Christ Electric is an authorized service dealer of Generac generators, the “number one distributor of generators in the nation, according to Mr. Cordeiro. The green-certified Chris Electric crew is staffed with Generac technicians, along with eight journeymen electricians and four master electricians, including the owners. In the 37 years since the founding of the Newport-based company, they have amassed a customer base reaching into the thousands throughout the East Bay and Aquidneck Island communities. “We have a lot of returning customers, says Mr. Cordeiro, largely because “we take pride in the things we do.

Redwood Nursery can plan and plant your dream garden It’s very fitting that words of advice for gardeners should come from the folks at Redwood Nursery and Garden Center in Swansea. Founder Manuel Vales has a long history of gardening, since the early ’60s, when he was groundskeeper for Blithewold. The late Blithewold owner, Marjorie Lyon, made Manuel a bequest so he could start his own business, and he did. He named the nursery Redwood, after a seedling he planted from the giant sequoia still growing on the Blithewold grounds. Today, a dedicated knowledgeable team that includes Manuel’s wife, Jacqueline Vales, and their children, are kept very busy with the full-service garden center operation and planting division run by manager and part-owner Jacqueline, assistant manager John Whitney, assistant manager and head landscape designer Jarred Lynch, along with key Redwood team members Norma McNally, John Conlley, Ben Holtzman, Tracey Berube, Lory Cummings, Mark Bergeron, Gail Brodeur, Lynn McCoombs, Penny Lachmann, Kate Ferguson and Kristen Kearney, who all love to assist clients with design, plant selection and planting, and love to share their extensive plant and landscape expertise. Redwood Landscaping and Property Maintenance, run by Lisa Vales, Moses Camara, Joe Campos and Joe Martin, can handle any job big or small. And Manuel still keeps a watchful eye on all things. Redwood Nursery, over the more than 40 years it has been in business, has grown from a small plot of land to more than two acres of exhibit space for landscape size trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. It’s a beautiful sight to behold for those driving by on Rt. 6. People call it a hidden gardening sanctuary — definitely worth a stop — and it is stocked and replenished year-round with a diverse array of products. “If we don’t have it, we’ll find it for a customer,” says Jacqueline of the staff’s customer service attitude and its full range of plants, shrubs, trees and perennials. “Customers always think spring and fall are the best times to plant, but with today’s cultural nursery practices, the way these plants are grown and prepared, summer is actu-

Redwood Nursery & Garden Center, Inc. 2664 Grand Army Highway, Swansea, MA 508-379-0081 www.redwoodnursery.com ally a great time to plant,” she says, and Redwood’s team is happy to do it for you or advise you on how to do it. The nursery carries a comprehensive lineup of organic products, including loam, compost and fertilizer, as well as mulches, sod and a unique collection of garden art. They also are distributors of Nantucket Sheds and Creative Playthings swing sets, and they stock a deep array of materials and plants to bring vibrant summer colors to your homes and gardens. The Redwood crew has developed a fine reputation in helping customers make the best choices for particular sites. The Redwood team works with customers to plan perennial gardens, solve shrub and tree problems and ensure your landscape will grow for years to come. Their design expertise is a real strength — something they take a lot of pride in. “We’re really big on coaching customers, not just selling them materials,” says Jacqueline. Their design expertise is a strength. Former chemistry teacher Norma McNally likes to research unusual plants for customers and has developed a unique list of plants for late fall and winter interest. “We like to make even the novice gardener successful,” says Norma of the Redwood customer philosophy. That customer-centric attitude extends to all aspects of the business, including its hours. They’re open seven days a week, so anytime someone wants to tackle a landscape project, Redwood is there to help. Planning it, planting it, and maintaining it, Redwood Nursery & Garden Center on Route 6 in Swansea is the place to begin.

Redwood is open seven days a week, and they love helping customers both design and create beautiful landscapes.

The nursery is larger than most customers expect, with a large selection of trees, shrubs, flowers and many landscape products available year-round.

Safe, enriching programs for children at the YMCA The Newman and Bayside branches of the YMCA of Greater Providence offer before and after school programming through the Out of School Time (OST) program for children in kindergarten through middle school as well as summer camp. OST Programs are held at their branches, as well as at convenient school-based locations in East Providence and Barrington. All East Providence students can be serviced at these three schools, and the Y offers transportation to and from the schools. The YMCA is a charitable organization which provides scholarships for families in need. The Y will also accept income-eligible state vouchers from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. More than 80 percent of the children and families they serve will receive some sort of financial assistance or qualify for income-based rates. The goal of the OST full-inclusion program is to give all children the opportunity to be the best they can be; to build confident children today who will be contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. As a parent, you can be assured that the safety of children in their care is of utmost importance. They utilize a rigorous screening and orientation process, and all staff members are trained in the recognition and prevention of child abuse. Every YMCA employee

must adhere to an established code of conduct. The OST curriculum focuses on impacting the academic, emotional, and physical development of each child. The OST staff emphasizes the importance of a healthy spirit, mind and body. At the Y’s unique program, the well-being of each student is woven into the daily curriculum. Children learn the benefits of good nutrition and healthy food choices while enjoy-

ing nourishing snacks. They learn stress management and techniques through engaging, fun activities and participate in games to keep them physically active. Children explore and develop creativity and self-expression through drama, dance and mixed art activities. Y camps offer values-oriented, camper-centered programs that help children discover their talents and feel a sense of belonging. The activities combine friendships, adventure, and personal growth, creating days as unique as each camper and memories that last a lifetime. Newman and Bayside both offer day camps and extended day programs. Sign up today before summer is over!
