Nannies can help any family Imagine this: It’s Sunday afternoon and you start a new job tomorrow. Then, the phone rings and it’s the new sitter who was due to start at 7 a.m. She’s sorry, but she can’t take the job after all. New Era Nannies to the rescue! NEN is able to provide a nanny on an “emergency” basis around the clock, among its many other services available in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts. “I’m a little bit of everything,” said owner Jae Wylie Willard. “You name it, I can do it for you. We can find you any type of nanny you need.” And modern families have many different needs, from live-in nannies to evenings out, summer help, child sick days, post-natal care, and more. New Era Nannies was born after Jae, an
interior designer, moved here from Chicago and had trouble finding the right quality nanny for her own children. “A lot of people are turned off by the word ‘nanny,’ “ she said, thinking they can’t afford one. Let Leisure Limousine take the wheel After 25 years in the business, Jeff Phelan of Leisure Limousines has many stories to tell. He’s driven politicians, pro athletes and celebrities like Donald Trump, Christine Aguilera, Joan Rivers and the late Monkee, Davey Jones. But all of Jeff’s customers are equally important to him, from the occasional famous person to those right here in the East Bay who trust him with their wedding parties, girls’ nights out, proms, airport transportation, trips to concerts, sporting events and other special occasions. Jeff wants to keep every passenger, of every age, safe on the road. If you are attending a bachelor or holiday party and will be drinking, for instance — don’t take a chance.
Have fun, relax and be safe with a professional driver from Leisure Limousines. His growing fleet ranges from a Lincoln Town Car to an 18-passenger Hummer limo and most everything in between. And if you’re looking for something he doesn’t own, he says, “If we don’t have it, we can get it.” His business Jeff Phelan is now located in a large indoor facility in Portsmouth, where his entire fleet can be seen. Special occasion coming up? Let Leisure Limousine take the wheel.

The school recently re-opened the newly renovated and expanded girls dormitory, Margot’s House.
St. Andrew’s prepares young minds for lifelong success Situated on 100 picturesque acres on Federal Road in Barrington, St. Andrew’s School has lived up to its high standard of academic excellence for more than a century. And according to Headmaster John D. Martin, the future is even brighter. “St. Andrew’s is very proud to be a part of the local community,” he said in no uncertain terms. “This is our 120th year, and we love being an important part of the Barrington community. We continue to grow. We’ve increased the student body by 100 students since 1996.” Though growing, St. Andrew’s is still a small school with a distinctive family atmosphere. The close-knit community is one of the major characteristics that students love about the school. They will not “get lost in the crowd,” but rather, become a noted addition to the student body. Equally important is that students are welcome to contribute not only to the school community, but the community at large. St. Andrew’s itself contributes to the community-at-large. The school provides athletic fields for lacrosse and the Barrington Invitational soccer tournament, tennis courts and running paths for the Barrington High School tennis and cross country teams, parking for the CVS Classic golf tournament, and facilities for use by churches — most recently the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island. Founded in 1983, St. Andrew’s is a coeducational, college preparatory institution for Grades 3 through Post Graduate, including a new, post-graduate bridge program that gives students the option of an additional year to strengthen their profile for college. Since then, it has blossomed into a highly respected, co-educational school. Its mission is to reach out to those students with learning differences whose needs have not been met in public or private schools. Today, St. Andrew’s offers a hands-on College Placement Program, with students continuing their education at colleges or universities such as Brown University, Emory University, Parsons The New School Of Design, Pratt Institute, Michigan State University, Purdue University, Berklee College Of Music, and Bryant University, to name a few. Furthermore, St. Andrew’s has embraced social and economic diversity, offering a generous, need-based financial aid program while emphasizing moral and ethical

John D. Martin has been the headmaster at St. Andrew’s School since 1996. values guided by its Episcopal heritage in preparation for each student’s journey into their next phase of life. “While we still take students who need financial help, we handle close relationships with tenderness,” Mr. Martin said. “We started out as a school for homeless boys, but we’re a lot different today.” Thanks to Mr. Martin’s strong character and communication skills, St. Andrew’s has taken its place as one of the best private schools in the region. This boarding and day school is dedicated to the individual success of its students, helping them to develop a strong personal identity, and teaching them to learn how to build on
their own unique talents. They average about 10 students per class. Mr. Martin, who has been headmaster at St. Andrew’s since 1996, said, “I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish at the Lower School (Grades 3 to 5) and the Middle School (Grades 6 to 8).” Anyone visiting St. Andrew’s for the first time will be struck by the beautifully landscaped grounds and campus facilities, including the newly renovated and expanded Gardiner Dining Hall and girls dormitory Margot’s House, both of which surround the Quad designed by Frederic Law Olmstead, the renowned landscape architect who designed Central Park in New York City.
“I’m happy to see our new dorm open. That project was just completed recently,” Mr. Martin said. The school also has an exceptional arts program – a recipient of state and national awards – which is centered in the spacious 20,000-square-foot McCulloch Center of the Arts. “We always integrate the arts,” Mr. Martin said. “It’s part of what we do.” The Center is a beehive of daily activity, from morning meetings, to afternoon practices and drawing classes. There are two spacious classrooms for visual art that both include areas to display student art. Adjacent to the classrooms is a ceramics classroom, sculpting tables, and two kilns for ceramics classes. The music department has another large classroom with enough space to store instruments, including a grand piano. The 280-seat Keats Theatre is equipped with a full stage as well as theatrical lighting and sound. Graphic arts and digital photography classes have access to a separate classroom with 12 computers specifically allocated for the graphic arts classes. St. Andrew’s also boasts a comprehensive theater arts program, with classes and camps for ages 4 to 18. ACTSA (All Children’s Theatre at St. Andrew’s) is open to all young people, whether they attend St. Andrew’s or not. The directors are professional teaching artists, and the students have the opportunity to perform in numerous productions throughout the year. For a number of years, St. Andrew’s School athletics have taken their place among the best high school programs anywhere in the country, especially boys’ basketball, where teams have been nationally ranked on many occasions. Led by head coach Mike Hart, the Saints have produced future college All-Americans and NBA-caliber talent. The athletic program reflects the school’s philosophy that centers on the growth of each student and the emphasis on building self-confidence.

Family designers are personal and professional Quality and attention to detail are two of the basic elements that have made Riley Kitchen & Bath Co. in Bristol so successful over the years. Located at 15 Gooding Ave., Suite 2, Riley Kitchen & Bath president and founder Michael Riley says he loves dealing with local people. “There are a lot of good people in this town,” he smiled. “It’s personal with me. You do your job, and business is awesome.” Mr. Riley began his own company after 10 years of designing and installing kitchens and baths for construction companies and architectural firms. Riley Kitchen & Bath Co. was incorporated in 2003 and has since been a model of consistency with all those who have done business with the company. With the talents of his wife Lisa, a professional kitchen and interior designer, the business has flourished. As Mr. Riley emphasized, “We offer great products and materials, but what makes our kitchen and bath designs fit perfectly, are the expert designers, planners and craftsmen involved in each project.” “I’m really fussy and detailed,” said Mr. Riley, who has a 14-year background in

I keep everything close and local as best I can.” Lisa Riley is the consummate professional. With many years of experience in kitchen and interior design, she takes personal pride in every project. “Quality of design is most important,” she emphasized. “I tell people you go to a place like this and pick out what you want. “We’re a smaller shop,” she continued. “We deal with only the local area. We’re not like the big box stores. It’s advantageous to us being the size that we are in a town this size. We have products for all budgets and price points.” Attention to detail on every design is what sets Riley Kitchen & Bath apart from others. Over the years, design experts at the company have defined and implemented a series of checkpoints to ensure that the order is received exactly as planned.
“We strive for perfection on every project and often exceed our customer’s expectations,” said Mr. Riley. The Riley Kitchen & Bath showroom is also impressive and detailed. Grab a pint and a monster burger Tinker’s Nest has risen from the ashes, and co-owners Mike Ferreira and John Moss are looking forward to a long and successful run for the Irish pub that has been a favorite local spot for more than years. Mike and John purchased the Warren landmark in August 2011 and immediately began an extensive renovation of the property, with plans to reopen last October. Those plans were dealt a severe blow when fire ripped through the structure just as they were putting the finishing touches on the new space. The re-renovation features retro signs, brightly-painted walls, a dark wood bar finished to a high gloss, and a green, white and orange ceiling — the colors of the Irish flag. They were finally able to open their doors for business in early March. Since opening, Tinker’s Nest has been serving a limited bar menu, but that will change very soon. A new menu, launching the first week in October, will feature many pub and Irish favorites, including beef & Guinness stew and shepherd’s pie. Mike is particularly excited about a pair of sandwiches that will be featured – a corned beef and a double cheeseburger – so large, so stuffed with meat, there was only one word he could use to describe them: monster. “They’re going to be incredible,” he said, “but priced right.” The new menu will be served daily until 10 p.m., with a smaller bar menu available until 11 p.m. As with any Irish Pub, beer is king at Tinker’s Nest. They serve a full range of lagers, stouts, porters and ales, with 11 on

Customer service still in style at A. S. Deams The “good old days” are alive and well at A. S. Deams store in Westport, where customers are treated like friends, shopping is a pleasure, and some of the best advertising comes from word of mouth. A.S. Deams is located in a former farmhouse next to Bittersweet Farm and features classic women’s clothing and distinctive gifts. The bucolic atmosphere alone sets the store apart, but its true specialty is customer service. You’re invited to browse to your heart’s content, but when you do need advice or help, your salesperson will go above and beyond to meet your needs. The store continues to carry clothing lines such as Pendleton and Gieger, but owner Sally Schimmel said she is also try-

Better organization for a better life Life can be stressful, but your home or office doesn’t have to be the cause. Lisa Griffith established The Organized Way in 2008, to help people clear away the clutter and set up organizing systems in their homes or offices for a more productive, less stress-filled life. Many years of teaching Lisa S. Griffith gave her the opportunity to help students and colleagues manage their spaces, stuff and time, so she decided to combine her teaching experience with her organizational skills and offer personalized organizing services. Her specialty is home office and small business office organizing, as well as

It seems everyone wears jeans now, Sally said, and customers are surprised, but thrilled, to find out she carries them. Sally began A. S. Deams with her business partner, the late Anne Frechette. The two had worked together for many years at the former Silas Jones store in Westport.

One of the first things Zach Burns did when he took over as president of Burns Power Tools a number of years ago was to bring the 77-year-old company into the 21st century with an awesome website that showcases and sells more than 37,000 tools and related items to customers throughout the country. The website features competitive prices, and this pricing philosophy has carried over into the retail store, as well. “Many people think that if you buy at one of the big box stores, you’re getting the best prices, but that isn’t so,” he says. Burns Power Tools is a member of several buying groups that enable them to purchase items at excellent prices and offer those savings to their customers. “It’s all about better pricing and better service, too,” says this young entrepreneur, who with his father, Jeff, runs the operation today. Quality tools, fair prices, good service and straight forward honesty have been prime motivations since founder John J. Burns, Zach’s great-grandfather, started his saw shop back in 1934. Over the years, Burns Power Tools has become a major supplier specializing in industrial power tools, heavy duty machinery, full service sharpening, repairs and related accessories. The business has grown by catering to contractors and industry and providing value to these customers that the large discount houses cannot. Loyal customers know that if they buy a tool from Burns, they’ll have no worries if it breaks down. Long lasting friendships have developed from this Burns philosophy. The tools and supplies carried by Burns are considered the most efficient on the
market according to Burns’ own testing and customer feedback. The company continually monitors competitors’ pricing and adjusts theirs to beat it. It is part of a “total packaging” approach to power tool marketing and includes selling, accessorizing, repairing and sharpening, as well as the best pricing. “Where will you take your big box purchase when it breaks down,” asks Zach. What was the foundation of Burns Power Tools’ business from day one is still at the forefront of its focus today. It takes a high degree of expertise to maintain the quality, finish and long-lasting nature of your specialized blades and few can claim the heritage Burns has in this highly technical field. The SuperSharp premium blade-sharpening process has been proven to last longer, cut better and extend your tool’s total service life. When you consider the tool investment you’ve made, it makes absolute sense to go with the best sharpening service available. A pickup and delivery service throughout the southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island saves you time and money on equipment sharpening and repair. In addition to in-house repair service on tools, Burns service technicians are available for road repair jobs and maintenance of shop equipment.

Great clothes at affordable prices When it comes to children’s clothing, it’s just plain smart to buy at a consignment shop — especially if it is Just Ducky, Bristol’s legendary spot that keeps earning accolades. This year, Bristol/Warren Patch voted it the best East Bay location for Sunday Best, and Rhode Island Monthly named it the Best Consignment Shop. Owner Dawn Grantham started her popular shop 16 years ago, and it has quickly outgrown a number of locations. Today, its Gooding Avenue address gives it room for its extensive high end children’s clothing, equipment, carriages and strollers, cribs and bedding — all at realistic prices.
“Keeping prices low is a good service to local families and the community,” says Dawn. You can shop by mail, in malls, or even in Europe, but Just Ducky is the only shop where you can find the best of everything all in one location. No wonder choosy moms high tail it to this special spot to outfit their growing Dawn Grantham children and to consign those lightly used designer duds. You’ll be glad you selected your children’s holiday clothing from the extensive collection.

Family-owned business offers the full spectrum of elderly services In 1966, Linda and John Machado opened the Grace Barker nursing home. Linda, a registered nurse, named the facility for her mentor and nursing school benefactor, a woman known for her unselfish and compassionate care-giving. I could think of no better tribute,” said Linda, “than to name it after Grace Barker.” Today, Linda and John’s daughter, Mary Beth, runs the facility along with her husband, Mark Lescault. In 1998, Mary Beth and Mark opened The Willows, an adjacent facility offering assisted living as well as adult day care. It’s a true family business: Mary Beth and Mark’s local roots run deep, and the business remains family-owned at a time when corporate ownership is increasingly becoming the norm. “We are blessed with staff longevity,” says Mary Beth. “We have people who have been with us for more than 30 years.” The sense of family is what makes Grace Barker and The Willows unique, agrees Mark, and it is tremendously beneficial for the senior citizens in their care. “It is very comforting for residents to see the same familiar, smiling faces day after day.” Mark also stresses that Grace Barker is the only facility in the area to provide a full continuum of services for the elderly. In addition to short-term rehabilitative care in the nursing center, the adult day care at The Willows provides a full day of activities for seniors who might otherwise be homebound, waiting for a caregiver to return from a day job. “Socialization is the key piece that is often missing in many home-care situations,” says Mark. “When it’s not there, it

Adult day care clients go home in the afternoon after an active, social day, ready to keep to a normal evening’s schedule.” The Willows assisted living facility provides tailored meals, housekeeping services, medical assistance and transportation, as well as occupational, physical and speech therapy. A full slate of events lets residents be as active as they would like, from exercise classes to nature walks to
cookouts — or even just a Sunday afternoon watching the big game with friends. Families who join the Grace Barker nursing center community will find that as things do change, they will be prepared. “There are no surprises,” says Mary Beth. “We know our residents and communicate regularly with their family members. When something changes, we coordinate with their family and medical team to determine what our next steps should be. It’s a
level of familiarity and continuity that truly sets us apart.”

Duckpin bowling at its best Dudek has been a Warren landmark for generations, and if it’s been generations since your last visit, you are in for a treat! Under Proprietor Scott Mansi, Dudek is a facility that truly has something for everyone. If you are into league bowling, there’s one for you, from junior to senior, allwomen (or men), or mixed. A visit to Young Family Farm can be an adventure for all ages Visitors arriving at the Young Family Farm in Little Compton are immediately greeted by a profusion of color. There’s green, of course – the predominant color of the 200 acres of farmland, peach, and apple orchards surrounding The Stand, where the literal fruits of their labor are sold. Within, you’ll find rich, red heirloom tomatoes, lush peaches, orange pumpkins and bright yellow summer squash. But it’s the colors you don’t expect: white pumpkins, tiny, super-sweet orange tomatoes, and billiard-sized tomatoes, striped like the zebra for which they’re named, that make every visit to Young’s an adventure. Farmers Tyler and Karla Young purchased the farm in 1997, and it began as a small wholesale potato business. But the Youngs envisioned a business growing fruits, vegetables and flowers, and offering them for sale to the local community. When Tyler’s first strawberry crop was ready, Karla sold the beautiful berries on a picnic table on the front lawn. Before long, the word was out, and Tyler began growing a variety of vegetables for the summer and year-round customers who flocked to the farm. Visitors to Young Family Farm find a dazzling array of color, as well as fruits, vegetables, flowers and more. With the help of their three daughters, the Youngs soon expanded their sales into Stand offers a dazzling array of fresh cut ing with herbs. Festival Ballet Providence Artistic Director Misha Djuric says dance classes are for all ages, from 3 to 60 years old.
It’s never too late to start dancing Festival Ballet Providence is more than just a dance studio; it’s a haven for the performing arts. Inside the walls of Festival Ballet, located at 825 Hope St. in Providence, dancers are radiant with creativity, enthusiasm and drive. “We do more than just teach people how to dance,” says Artistic Director Misha Djuric. “We contribute to the community at large by giving people the inspiration and joy that comes with the understanding of the arts.” According to Mr. Djuric, classes at Festival Ballet allow students of all ages to nurture their individuality and creativity while learning discipline, coordination and improving overall fitness. "People are forgetting about dance as a profession or even a hobby," Mr. Djuric says. "[People] get caught up in daily life and other professions and forget that dancing is natural. No matter who you are, you hear the rhythm and you want to move with it." Intended for anyone from age three to 60, classes are designed for even the most inexperienced dancer and range in genre from ballet to modern to jazz. Classes are also flexible to work around academic and adult schedules, and performances are held at major Rhode Island venues including Providence Performing Arts Center and the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. In addition to serving the community as a top school for recreational dance classes, Festival Ballet is also the only professional classical ballet company in the state of Rhode Island. “We have a very competitive, very high level dance company here with some out-

standing professional dancers,” Mr. Djuric says. “Even when [these dancers] are not practicing and rehearsing, they are thinking about dancing, 24 hours a day.” Though Mr. Djuric says becoming a professional dancer is extremely difficult and over the years has become a not-socommon career path, he prides himself on the number of quality dancers the company has had the opportunity to work with over the years. Every season, professionals from all over the country travel to audition for the full-time job of performing with Festival Ballet Providence. Currently, the company is comprised of 25 professional artists, apprentices and trainees who perform classical and original contemporary work throughout the year. Above all, both the school and company stress the importance of artistic understanding and utilization of dance, not only as an art form, but a sense of self expression. "When you start dancing, you will see a change in lifestyle and will be making new discoveries about yourself,"Mr. Djuric says. "And whether you want to do it for fun or train to be a professional, it is never too late to start dancing."

Country Woolens is worth the trip Country Woolens, “Westport’s Outdoor Store,” opened in 1977. Initially, proprietor Ann Squire, a Westport native, intended to own and operate a yarn shop and carry a selection of sweaters as well. Woolrich sportswear, for both men and women, was added to the inventory after a couple of years in business. More than three decades later, Country Woolens offers a large selection of casual sportswear and shoes, from bathing suits to outerwear, sandals to boots, and everything in between. And there is not a skein of yarn in sight. “We put in some clothes and they sold,” says Ann. “I eventually stopped stocking yarn.” In addition to clothing and footwear, there is a wide variety of gifts and toys on display. Country Woolens carries high-quality products in brands like North Face and Teva — names that are as sought out by kids and teens as they are by adults. And every year, they add more to their extensive selection. Clothing brands include Woolrich, Pendleton, Fresh Produce, Horny Toad,
Life Is Good, Smartwool, Dahlgren, Isis, Carhartt, Speedo, Mt. Khaki, Exoficcio, Neves, Wigwam, Zutano, and many more. If you’re after shoes, Country Woolens stocks quality and long-wearing brands, including Merrill, Keen, Okab, Rafters, Eliza B, Naot, Crocs, Teva, Sperry, Acorn, and Bogs. No visit to Country Woolens is complete without a browse through the sale basement, where overstocks, off-season, last season and inventory that is not featured in the main part of the shop is offered at bargain prices. The sale basement is open all year, and new items are added weekly. Smart shoppers with an eye for a bargain will never leave empty-handed. For 35 years, locals have frequented Country Woolens because of their superior customer service, products and selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and free gift wrapping. Simply put, Country Woolens is an enjoyable place to shop. If you are from Westport, you already know this. If you’re not, it is worth the trip.

Honest food, served with passion Perfectly located to take in gorgeous views of the Warren River, the elegantly understated interior of Trafford Restaurant is equally lovely. But it’s the fabulous food that comes from the kitchen of Chef Trafford Kane that keeps regulars returning week after week. Kane is the self-taught son of restaurateurs William and Marguerite Kane, who own and operate Marguerite’s, in Westport. Heather Dalton, Trafford’s sister, runs the immaculate front of the house. Kane’s belief that food should be eaten “as close to natural as possible” is printed right on the menu, and the menu changes with the seasons and the availability of fresh produce. Accordingly, their recent summer menu
included a caprese salad with fresh mozzarella, prosciutto and a basil-orange vinaigrette, lobster and corn fritters with a roasted red pepper coulis, and crabstuffed cod with citrus butter and tomato jam. At Trafford Restaurant you’ll find honest food, prepared with passion. Go once – you will find yourself returning again and again, guaranteed.

There’s nothing better than fresh, hand made Italian pasta. But why make reservations for an overpriced Italian restaurant when all you want to do is cuddle up on the couch for dinner? Well, Fatigati’s Fresh Pasta has the answer. Greg Fatigati, owner of Fatigati’s Fresh Pasta, opened the doors to his authentic, Italian-style take out shop in August after he, “saw a need for good Italian takeaway” in Rhode Island. At Fatigati’s, all dishes are made from scratch, which allows customers the opportunity to pick and choose pasta types, sauces and add-ins which can be made in less than 15 minutes. Because everything is made fresh in the kitchen,
Fatigati’s can also cater to those who love gluten-free or whole wheat plates. “The customers really like the fact that they can build their own dish,” says Mr. Fatigati. Plates are sold for the Greg Fatigati individual or in fourperson portions for a family size. Catering is also available for up to 60 people. For more information, check out Fatigati’s website at www.fatigatisfreshpasta.com. To place an order for pickup, call (401) 682-1111.

Allied Floor Covering opened in 1952. It moved to its present location in 1960. And it employed one of its lead installers in 1962 — a gentleman who is still installing floors today. “The guy is a magician with flooring,” says Allied owner Ray Caron, who bought the business in 1989 and has tremendous pride in the tradition and craftsmanship in his business. That Allied craftsmanship can extend to any room in your house, from beautiful hardwood foyers, to lush family room carpets, to gleaming granite countertops in the kitchen, and custom stone and tile work around bathroom sinks, tubs and showers. Allied does a lot of customer work with tile and stone and is expanding its offerings in granite and marble. A new facility will soon showcase more than 150 marble and granite

slabs. Mr. Caron is especially proud of the reputation earned through decades of excellence. “Because of the good people we have, our call-back rate is near zero. We do everything we possibly can to make sure everything is done properly. We guarantee our labor for the life of a floor. If you call us 10 years, 20 years from now, we’ll take care of it no matter what.”

Hunt for a bargain at Warren Exchange If you follow the Nielsen ratings, you know that reality shows featuring bargain hunters rifling through storage sheds and estate sales are pulling in viewers by the millions. These days, America is hungry for a bargain. And as luck would have it, there’s a place right here in the East Bay where you can satisfy your inner bargain hunter. The Warren Exchange, located in historic, downtown Warren, is a coin shop, but it offers far more than just coins. It’s a combination of “Pawn Stars” and “American Pickers” right in the heart of downtown. With more than 40 years of experience in numismatics, jewelry, and antiques, Warren Exchange is the place for buyers, collectors, and sellers. Parking is free, and there’s a sale in the lot every Sunday. Warren Exchange is interested in anything old or unique, and pays cash for all items, including gold, silver, coins, crystal, watches, cast iron toys, vintage toys, tin banks, paintings and sculptures, to name just a few. You can bring your item in for a free appraisal, with no appointment necessary. Or you can make an appointment and Warren Exchange is happy to do house calls. “We will buy anything of value,” says proprietor Tara Hurley. “From one marble to an entire estate.” Among the countless antiques, collectibles and oddities that have passed through the doors of Warren Exchange are American coins, Asian and African art, circus buttons, political pins, sports and Hollywood autographs and memorabilia, books, folk art, Hummel figurines, carvings, movie

And undoubtedly, that is not all. Warren has been fondly called eclectic before, and will be again, so it seems fitting that Warren Exchange is located at the southbound gateway to downtown warren, where Water and Main Streets meet. Tranquil Waters will work for a better you From the moment you open the door of Tranquil Waters, you’ll know you want to stay. The inviting atmosphere features cascading water fountains, soothing music, hues of sea blues and greens, tasteful décor and a warm, welcoming staff. It is not just a salon, it is a total sensory experience from start to finish. Tranquil Waters offers something for everyone, from a haircut, manicure or pedicure, to facial, body treatment, massage, to one of the dozens of specialty services. These include medical treatments such as Zerona, a new non-invasive body contouring procedure which removes excess fat. “We’re not really like any other day spa around,” said owner June Ferreira, who opened Tranquil Waters seven years ago with her husband William. “We’re resultsoriented.” Take your skin, for example. If you want anti-aging, that’s what you’ll get from treatments and products that are medical-grade — which means they would only be available through a dermatologist or a high-end spa. The Visia complexion analysis system will look beyond the surface of the skin to see what hidden problems may need special attention by your clinician. It will also show you what you will look like five years from now if you do nothing but your present skin-care regime, and what you would look like with the clock turned back five years. While it’s true the skin care and other products available at Tranquil Waters cost more, “You get what you pay for,” Ms. Ferreira emphasized. “Do you want to spend a little more and get real results? You will

see better results here than if you went somewhere else, because of the products being used. It makes a difference.” However, you shouldn’t let the fact that Tranquil Waters is a high-end spa scare you away. “A lot of people might look at our website and think we’re too expensive,” said Ms. Ferreira, but that’s not true. Start out slowly: A simple manicure begins at $25, a basic facial with the Visia analysis is $95. Regular customers may take advantage of VIP offers, too.

Ear, Nose and Throat – Two locations, one level of care Ear Nose and Throat Medicine and Surgery Group has made itself a part of the East Bay Community for more than 25 years. Dr. James Dobbin opened his practices in Bristol and Middletown, R.I., in 1987. Dr. Steven Freedman joined him as a partner in 1992. They were housed in the Bristol County Medical Center but moved because they needed more space. They have now been in their new location at Belltower Plaza on Metacom Avenue in Bristol since March of 2011. They are in Bristol three days a week, providing both physician and audiology services, with plans to expand in the future. They are exceptionally happy with their staff of five, who cumulatively have worked for the doctors for 70 years. “We always try to do our best when caring for our patients,” Dr. Dobbin said. “We appreciate our patients,” said Dr. Freedman. “We have an affinity for the culture and the hard-working ethic here.” Both physicians enjoy seeing patients in both offices. “Different patient populations, different needs,” Dr. Freedman said. Ear, Nose & Throat is a medical practice that provides care for ear, nose and throat diseases, including hearing loss. They spend the time diagnosing ear problems and hearing loss and determining which patients can benefit from hearing aids. The audiology staff at Ear Nose and Throat Medicine and Surgery Group can provide a full range of hearing rehabilitations services, including hearing aids. Dr. Freedman said, “We offer our

Small classes and 21st century tools at Barrington Christian Academy Here in the land where teachers, administrators and parents take a serious handson approach to a child’s schooling, Barrington Christian Academy joins in the ranks of the town’s educational excellence and goes an important step further by adding Christian core values to its well-rounded curriculum. This accredited, nondenominational K12 day school, founded in 1979 by Elsie Wright the Barrington Baptist Church and now an independent private Christian school, serves 235 diverse students from more than 20 Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts communities, as well as an international student population from Vietnam, China and South Korea. Small classes are the norm throughout the three wings that house lower, middle and upper school students in a structure that includes 21st-century bells and whistles. The high school chorus, more than 60 strong, entertains the community at large. College acceptances are admirable. Head of School since 1989, Elsie Wright leads a talented faculty, many with, or pursuing advanced degrees. She herself is an EdD candidate at Columbia International University and anticipates completing her degree within the next two years. While Elsie Wright has seen great growth in student numbers and the phys-
ical plant during her tenure, she is especially pleased with the school’s goal of being a good neighbor and its increasing interaction with the community. BCA students visit seniors at Bay Spring Village, do yard work at senior homes around town, and host unique happenings like last year’s paper shredding event that provided a well-received service. Student projects reach beyond town borders. This year, members of the junior class will head off to the Dominican Republic on a mission to help a population in need. A BCA mentoring program connects eighth-grade students with helpful advisors throughout town, seniors connect with mentors during their senior projects and some Barrington High School seniors have received similar guidance from BCA mentors. The school opens its doors frequently to outside meetings and events. The Barrington Preservation Society used school facilities as its base for a September house tour. The school is also inviting the community to a fun-filled family carnival on Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s the perfect time to get to know this Barrington asset.

Home for the best-dressed women Feminine Fancies owner Elaine Felag has retailing in her genes. Her father and uncle established Barrington Radio more than 65 years ago, and the business runs successfully today under family management. Though she studied to be a social worker, Elaine, who had worked in the lingerie Elaine Felag department at Cherry & Webb, couldn’t resist the lure of retailing and opened up Feminine Fancies 30 years ago as a lingerie shop, expanding it over the years to the mini-department store it is today.
This upscale, specialty boutique carries extensive collections of dresses, denim, jewelry, shoes and lingerie. Rhode Island Monthly has named it “Best Clothes for Every Woman.” Few women can escape the draw of designer names like Nicole Miller, Shoshanna, Trina Turk, Magashoni, ABS, Beth Bowley, Joes Jeans, Nanette Lepore, and many, many more. And when there’s something special on the event calendar, you can be sure there will be lots of consultations with this highly regarded fashion expert, who thinks nothing of dressing her customers from head to toe. Admire an outfit on someone and chances are excellent this Barrington fashion whiz had a hand in it.

The big gym with the heart of a small studio The options, classes, variety, diversity and equipment are seemingly endless at 426 Fitness in Warren, where this enormous space feels remarkably small and cozy. Housed in a warmly renovated space in the Parker Mill complex along Metacom Avenue, 426 Fitness has a little bit of everything. Scattered around the main workout areas, with banks of weight and aerobic equipment, are an array of rooms catering to unique fitness programs. One room is devoted to Spinning classes. Another, filled with state-of-the-art rowing machines, is the rowing room. An enormous space in the back can hold a Zumba class of 80 people (more on that later), while the personal training room holds just two people — you and a trainer. There are also a Ladies Only room, a dance studio, a children’s area, and even indoor batting cages and an indoor golf driving range. “We have such tremendous diversity here,” said owner Mark Lombari. Much of that diversity is embodied in his instructors. Steve Skitek has been in the business for more than 25 years and is the lead person for the private training studio. Mr. Skitek teaches TRX suspension training within that room, as well as any form of exercise and conditioning you can imagine. “For some people, coming into the gym for the first time, it can be very overwhelming. In the private setting, you can get our one on one attention,” Mr. Skitek said. Alison Benfeito has 20 years of experience teaching yoga and many forms of

Her latest specialty is STRIDE, a program of cardio-dance mixed with elements of boot camp. “You’re getting your cardio, but you’re also getting your muscle toning,” Ms. Benfeito said. To introduce STRIDE to the public, 426 Fitness is opening the class for free to members or non-members. Just show up at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights and try it. Jessica Tarantelli has taught yoga, Zumba and other classes for years, and she’s
adding a new speciality: ROWGA. Designed right there at 426 Fitness, ROWGA moves from a five-minute warmup to 25 minutes of intense, competitive rowing, followed by a 25-minute period of relaxing, stretching yoga. ROWGA will be held Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning in October. Ms. Tarantelli teaches a wildly popular Zumba class on Thursdays at 7 p.m., where class is open to anyone in exchange for a
small donation to the Warren Animal Shelter. “It’s a great Zumba class, with tons of energy and tons of fun,” Ms. Tarantelli said. She’s led as many as 80 people at a time, which is how they raised more than $4,000 for the animal shelter in less than two years. The lead rower at 426 Fitness is Jill Lancaster, who competed in world and African championships for her native Zimbabwe (and won a bronze medal at the worlds). Ms. Lancaster, who teaches classes in the totally cool rowing room, is proud that 426 Fitness is raising funds for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation with a special invitation throughout October. Anyone from the gym or the general public is welcome to take a turn on a special pink rowing machine near the front of the gym. For a minimum donation of $5, you can row 500 meters on the machine. In exchange, you receive a specially designed T-shirt, as well as entry into a raffle at the end of the month. Those with the fastest times (one man and one woman) will each win a prize. If you haven’t, visit 426 Fitness — the enormous gym with the heart of a small studio.

Fresh, fun and full of flavor at Pizza Wave Pizza Wave owners Jim Spevock and Ron Lopes are thrilled with the reception their fun and funky restaurant has received in the Bristol area since they opened nearly eight years ago. “It’s gone way beyond our expectations,” says Jim, of the 122-seat family-style restaurant with its comfort- Jim Spevock able booths and spacious surroundings. The restaurant’s pizza dough is made fresh each morning from scratch. In addition to specialty pizzas and calzones, the
restaurant features prime rib on Friday and Saturday evenings, an extensive selection of steaks, Italian and Mexican specialties and fresh-off-the boat seafood dishes — all to be enjoyed with your favorite beer or wine. Head chef John Manchester creates daily dinner specials, and the dessert menu includes rich and creamy cheese cakes, pies and Gregg’s famous chocolate cake. “I used to live in Bristol and I thought this was an ideal spot for an upscale pizza restaurant,” explained Ron, who also owns a Cape Cod restaurant. “We learned a lot from our local diners about how they like their fish, how they like their chowder, “ he says. Obviously, their happy customers approve.

Find vintage and antique at Yester-Days Yester-Days News opens this week in Riverside, the newest venture by husband and wife business partners Tom and Susan Sampson. The new shop will feature a wide array of vintage and antique furniture and household collectibles, ranging from antique to mid-century to modern, with both collectible and practical items. Stock includes a little bit of everything, including artwork, kitchen items, china, silver, jewelry, and vinyl records. Shopping at Yester-Days News will be “like a treasure hunt every day,” says Tom. Tom, a former kitchen designer, was looking for a career course change. As the former manager of the Stock Exchange in Barrington, Susan already has the expertise and eye
for antique and vintage purchasing and resale. The Sampsons’ son, a journalism student at Northeastern, was the inspiration for the shop’s playful name. Their inventory mostly comes from auctions, estate sales, or home downsizing. Rather than pay a company to clean out a home, Tom will do the job free of charge, and offer a new life for unwanted objects. “Anything that can be reused, repurposed or recycled, will be.”

An entrepreneur follows his dream It has been a lifelong dream of Matt Amaral to follow his entrepreneurial spirit. Though it took time, when Barrington changed the law to allow liquor stores in town, Matt went to work planning Grapes and Grains, one of Barrington’s first wine and spirit shops. The delightful emporium, features 2,200 square feet of professionally designed retail space and an impressive collection of hand-selected wines, small batch spirits, craft beers and ales. Wine is displayed by region and includes sections for “Staff Picks” and “Under $12” bottles. General Manager Peter Andrews, with an MBA from Johnson & Wales and a sommelier concentration, truly knows his wine.
Thoughtful touches such as complimentary coffee, a Skype camera for interactive tastings, a touch screen kiosk to help with pairings, and a wine dispenser, make a wine buying excursion the perfect outing. Weekly tastings are held on Friday and Saturday nights. Check out the Reserve Room new addition, a cigar humidor or plan an event there.

Owners George and Susan Tanner, who opened Center Ace Hardware six years ago in Barrington Shopping Center, have a real showcase location for those driving by or walking on County Road. They are joined by their daughter, Nicole, as well as an experienced sales team, in overseeing a versatile and well stocked hardware store that manages to always have just the thing you’re looking for. “I want people to know we’re truly more than a neighborhood hardware store ... and that more is a big word,” says George. “We’re a place where people gather, catch up with one another and just stop by to see us,” he says. He tells of how very often people on their way home from work will swing by and walk the aisles, to decompress after a tough
day at the office, or simply to see what’s new. “They don’t have to buy a thing,” says George. “We love to see them.” George and his team make a real effort to fit into the community too, offering their store as a location for fundraising events and activities for organizations. From high school car washes to Boy Scout bird house building projects. “Our doors are always open for worthy projects,” he says.

When you visit Nonni’s, you can purchase items from the market (far left), try selections at the wine bar (left) or take out a fresh-made meal for tonight’s dinner (above).
Fresh, delicious and ready to serve here or at home Nonni’s Italian Kitchen & Pasta Shop does a lot of things, and it does them all deliciously well. Foremost, it’s a full-service restaurant with a wide selection of homestyle Italian dishes. It’s a wine bar, with some 30 wines on the menu, many available by the glass, and tastings with food pairings are held every other month. And it’s a thriving takeout market, where you can either pick up your order hot and ready to eat, or purchase a variety of ovenready lasagnas, pasta dishes, and sauces, as well as tender, outsized meatballs to take-and-bake. They even stock a small selection of Italian staples, including dried pastas, jarred and canned tomatoes, sauces, oils, and vinegars. Nonni’s is named for the grandmother

of proprietor Phil DeDucca who oversees the kitchen while wife Cheryl runs the front of the house. Phil’s memories of his childhood in Boston, and his Nonni’s Sunday dinners, are the inspiration for everything that comes out of the kitchen at Nonni’s Italian Kitchen and Pasta Shop. Starting with top quality ingredients and creating food the way they would in the
“old country” is the recipe for Nonni’s success. Nonni’s pasta is made fresh every day, with flour, eggs, water and salt. You won’t find any preservatives or artificial ingredients. The selection varies daily and may include spaghetti, fettucini, angel hair, linguine, pappardelle, shells, rotini, macaroni, ravioli and gnocchi, among others. Call ahead if you are looking for something in particular, or ask a staffer what’s available. Either way, you won’t be disappointed. Nonni’s pasta and sauces are also available at wholesale to other restaurants and businesses. The standard menu at Nonni’s Italian Kitchen features delicious classic Italian dishes for dine-in or takeout, including
antipasto salad, Tuscan-style pizza, eggplant parmesan and a variety of pastas and sauces, as well as picatta, marsala and saltimbocca dishes with your choice of chicken or fork-tender veal. The dining room menu features weekly specials that change depending on the seasonal availability of ingredients, but may include dishes like baked cod, shrimp zuppa, or pasta primavera. It won’t be easy, but guests will want to leave room for one Nonni’s delicious desserts (or a dessert martini!) and cappuccino. Nonni’s also features live acoustic music in the dining room on weekends, and on Sundays, children under 10 eat free. The secret is out, so reservations are recommended!

Second Helpings is literally overflowing with items like furniture, art, garden accents and bargains galore.
Find your next treasure at Second Helpings – and Thirds If ever there was a place to go to buy that random something that you need — and especially that random something that you didn’t even know you needed until you saw it — it’s Second Helpings in Bristol. Located at 32 Gooding Ave., in the shopping plaza anchored by the BankNewport and next door to Pet Foods Plus, Second Helpings is consignment at its finest — and often, at its most eclectic. Established nine years ago by proprietor Mary Tabor, a Bristol native, Second Helpings stocks a remarkable variety of items. “There’s a very wide range, as far as what sells well here,” says Mary, and she has an uncanny eye for what items are most likely to fly off her shelves. It’s a skill she honed over many years, often by necessity. “I grew up in a large family, and money could get tight. My mom was a great yard sale shopper. She had a great eye for treasures, and for a good deal,” says Mary. “I grew up a bargain hunter.” Second Helpings is in a very large space, none of which is wasted. The store is literally overflowing, with some items such as bicycles, sleds, and garden accents overrunning the front door and filling the covered walkway outside, giving it the feel of an open-air market. Items run the gamut from current to vintage to outright antique. Architectural details, including unique windows and doors, can be found here. Need a bureau, sofa, or sideboard? They have them — it’s the style that varies, from traditional to art deco to contemporary. Chandeliers run the length of the main aisle, from modern minimalist to colonial-inspired candelabra. It’s the sheer variety of her stock — and a desire to reach out to the larger Rhode Island community — that has led Mary to use Facebook, in addition to their website, as effective tools to let people know what’s new and hot in her inventory. The Second Helpings Facebook page features photographs of some of their more sought-after and unique offerings. A quick perusal of their page on any given day might reveal an immaculate cedar chest, a vintage radio, a wrought iron table, and a stained glass window. Connecting with Second Helpings via Facebook is the next best thing to being there.
Find hand bags, books, eclectic items, dishware, electronics and unexpected treasures at Second Helpings and Thirds, located next to each other in Gooding Plaza in Bristol.
Mary and her staff — seven at last count, including her son — make a special effort to tailor their stock to the seasons. Currently, all things fall and Halloween will get top billing, followed by Christmas, while spring will usher in an emphasis on planting and gardening. Any time of year, you will find a variety of china, glassware and cookware, sterling and stainless flatware, crystal and perhaps even collectible “depression” glass. Cookbooks have their own section, as do popular and local books — including the occasional high school yearbook. Rugs and textiles abound, from Orientals to fabric remnants.

A wide selection of art is available, whether you are looking for a nice print or vintage poster for a spare room, or are fantasizing about being the next guy who finds an unknown Picasso. Vintage toys, popular with men of all ages, sell fast, and the expansive checkout area features a glass case full of treasures ranging from costume jewelry to rare baseball cards. Four years ago, Mary took her business acumen and experience and expanded, opening her clothing and accessories consignment boutique, Thirds, next door to Second Helpings. Thirds boasts not only immaculate, previously owned everyday items (often new, with tags), it also features top brands in shoes and accessories. Names like Coach, Jimmy Choo and Kate Spade routinely cycle through the inventory. At both Second Helpings and Thirds, the price structure involves a bit of a how-badlydo-you-want-it enticement. Each tag includes three prices: the one you’ll pay the day the item hits the shelves or the racks, the
one you’ll pay after 30 days, and the one you’ll pay after 60 … that is, if it’s still around. It’s enough of a gamble, albeit relatively risk-free, to make shopping at Second Helpings and Thirds a bit of a sport for bargain hunters. Ultimately, it’s the treasure hunter within that brings us back time and time again, poring over the shelves looking for that special thing, that thing we needed without even knowing about it. Treasures can be found here, and while art is tough and signatures are not always easily deciphered, antique dealers frequent Second Helpings, and their expert eyes often find something worth pursuing. If you are visiting Second Helpings for the first time, or the first time in a month, be prepared to spend some time. Keep up with them on Facebook and keep an eye open. Mary certainly does. “You should get a good bargain,” she says. “You know what you you like, and you know it when you see it. That’s what it’s all about. Finding your treasure.”

Enter with a smile, leave with a smile at this dentist’s office Dr. JP Van Regenmorter’s office is welcoming from the moment you see it. From the cedar-shingle building to the festive autumn wreath hanging on the front door, this does not feel like the average dentist’s office. Walk through that door and meet the smiling Jessica Balasch, who greets patients and directs them to the right. Here, the term “waiting room” seems far too bleak for the comfortable upholstered chairs or long green couch. The only telltale sign that you’re about to see the dentist is the electric Sonicare toothbrush display on one of the end tables. At the other end of the room sits a fireplace, its mantle covered with various Native American artifacts, including arrowheads, clay pots, and a coonskin cap. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dr. Van Regenmorter has been practicing dentistry in the Northeast since 1995. “He actually has two uncles who have their own practices in Fall River, and that’s what brought him to this area,” said Krystal Todd, 28, Dr. Van Regenmorter’s office manager. Ms. Balasch has been working for Dr. Van Regenmorter for 10 years. “We’re all like family here,” she said. “It’s like a second home.” Despite its relaxed atmosphere, the office does have some of the most up-to-date equipment around. “We have a CEREC machine, for CEREC crowns,” said Ms. Todd. “You can leave with a crown that same day.” Ms. Todd estimated that the office sees about 50 patients a day, with the help of Dr. Nicholas Catallozzi and five hygienists. Dr. Catallozzi is a native of Lincoln, R.I., who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Doctor of Dental Surgery from
Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He recently moved back to Rhode Island after living in the midwest for 10 years and joined the practice in Tiverton. Ms. Todd is from Tiverton herself, and believes the office contributes to the community in a positive way. “This past year, we did Give Kids a Smile Day,” said Todd. “It’s pretty much free dental work for kids. We typed out an announcement and put it around local businesses, and
then did it by appointment so we wouldn’t be overflowing with patients that day.” The office also sponsors local sports teams when he can, including both Little League and soccer. This altruistic attitude permeates the office. “I love meeting new people and talking to them, just getting to know everyone,” said Ms. Balasch. “I assist too. I work in the rooms so I know a little bit of everything. I just love helping people.”
The office of Dr. J.P. Van Regenmorter blends state of the art equipment with a homelike, friendly atmosphere.
