Owner Dawn Grantham started Just Ducky 16 years ago because she enjoyed buying fine clothes for her children and had no one to pass them down to. “Just Ducky just took off,” she says, of her shop’s amazing success. “You can shop at malls, by catalog, at boutiques, and even in Europe for lovely children’s clothing, but we’re the only kind of store where you can get it all in one location,” says Dawn. “People are getting a lot smarter about shopping for children’s clothing, and even those who don’t need to shop in a consignment store come here because of the good selection and better quality merchandise” she says. You’ll find brand names like Lily Pullitzer,

Hannah Andersson, Mini Boden, Crewcuts, Baby Lulu and Vineyard Vines, as well as new boutique items, European shoes, Christening and First Communion clothing. The shop also handles a lot of highend children’s equipment, strollers, maternity clothing and nursery bedding and prides itself on its Dawn Grantham competitive prices. Who knew that the next big thing in children’s items would be diaper bags? Find the really cool ones at Just Ducky now, from makers like Kate Spade, Petunia Picklebottom and Vera Bradley.

So much more than pizza You get a fabulous first impression when walking into the family restaurant Pizza Wave in Bristol. It is well lit and very clean; a real sense of order is evident and the staff is so welcoming. The managers, Jennifer LaVault and Dan Wilkinson, noted the recent significant menu changes that added many new dishes, such as: Seafood Risotto, Baked Stuffed Haddock, Shrimp Mozambique, Prime Rib, Monterey Chicken and so many more. For the health conscious, there is an array of nutritious, verdant salad selections. A wonderful option for your kids is to make their own pizza tableside! There is an ongoing Lunch promotion where you can enjoy Fish and Chips or the very popular Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli for well under $10. The popular Tuesday

Burger Special offers great burgers all day for under $7, and on Wednesday, all pasta dishes are $2 off regular price. Season harvest beers are offered on tap for you beer fans. Pizza Wave is not just a pizza place. It offers so many options. Most importantly, it is a great family restaurant and has been a fantastic place to host events, such the Ride for Freedom, a fundraiser benefiting the brave men and women serving our country overseas.

Hand Crafted Cutting Boards IN MAHOGANY, MAPLE AND ASH Owners of The Knotty Dog, Will and Peggy Hicks

Find a gift collection unlike any other Located on Bradford Street in the very heart of downtown historic Bristol is The Knotty Dog, a totally unique and charming gift store. It is chock full of many classy gift options, offering shoppers unique gift choices, opposed to the mundane selections offered by the impersonal Big Box stores all around. Every item in the The Knotty Dog has a noteworthy story behind it, and Peggy and Will Hicks can tell you about the significance of each chosen craft item. The clean and well organized store is located in a treasure of a house where Peggy and Will reside. They revitalized the 1799 Captain’s house and sought to create a business selling interesting gifts from a historical Bristol landmark. You can feel the history of a different time while browsing in the Knotty Dog. Peggy and Will are committed to being part of the Bristol community by contributing their time and focus in a selfless manner. Both are fully committed to the Bristol Merchants Association and the events that drive commerce through the idyllic nautical

town. Both wanted to get out of the corporate world and relocate into a scenario where they could embrace the amazing community spirit of this New England gem. They are attracted to the many museums, parks and significant history that so many tourists come to see. Establishing their business made sense, as there was a need for a store like the Knotty Dog. Bristol is so lucky to have a store that offers so many unique gifts. Peggy and Will have embarked on a new business within The Knotty Dog where they manufacture custom soap in the old-world style of fabrication. It is fascinating to witness this old world craft being practiced. Bristol is lucky to have such an authentic and committed couple living their dream so passionately.

His company is also lead certified, and provides free professional consultations and detailed estimates. His services include interior and exterior painting, power washing and wood restoration, brush and spray applications and epoxy repairs. BadDog guarantees its work for a year. And on that subject, BadDog has some words of good advice to those looking for painting contractors this fall. Make sure your painters are licensed and insured. “Workers comp is important to employees and homeowners,” says Bill, a proud U.S.Veteran who takes his craft very seriously. He urges homeowners to make sure the prep work for each painting project is properly done, as this is the most important step. The prepping phase may include pressure washing, sanding, scraping, priming, caulking, glazing, plaster repairs, wood repairs, wallpaper removal and drywall patching, as needed. “You’ll want to know the surface is properly prepared before the paint is applied,” he says. “That way you’ll be assured of a long-lasting paint job.

Gymnastics, fitness, nutrition all in one When owners Jennifer Flaxington and Eric and Rabecca Eunis purchased the property at 1735 GAR Highway in Swansea in July 2012, they took possession of a building that had been specifically constructed for gymnastics and fitness. It was an ideal match to showcase Prestige Fitness and Gymnastics Center, Inc., where their goal to instill the importance of overall fitness for life in children and adults alike could become reality. With some updating and plenty of hard work and dedication, they are now entering a second year in their location with new equipment, locker rooms, competitive and recreational gymnastics programs, plus enticing adult and children’s fitness regimens. USAG certified coaches produce specialized programs for all ages that are fun, challenging and safe. The Pip Squeak classes, designed for children 18 months to 3 years AND a selected adult of their choice, help develop gross and fine motor skills. Pee Wees, ages 3 to 5 years, and Peanuts 5 to 6 years, attend class independent of Mom or Dad. Recreational Classes are designed for children 6 and up to attain and improve their gymnastics skills and abilities. Tumble classes are offered to increase tumbling skills on floor. Prestige has just added a special needs class to the venue as well. Their Competitive Team requires year round training and is by invite only. Their latest fitness program is designed to light a fire in your metabolism! Inferno Fit was created to allow adults and children to work-out together, thus promoting family fitness. Prestige gets everyone moving … together.

Nutrition is also a hot topic at Prestige, with delicious “Shake and Share” events introducing “Shakeology,” known as the world’s best shake. All ages benefit, including the parents. Plus, there’s a full array of movie nights, sleepovers, clinics, open play and vacation camps that incorporate fitness and fun into a healthy lifestyle. Gymnastics, fitness, nutrition, positive role models … it all has a new name and a new place. It’s called Prestige Fitness & Gymnastics Center, and it’s a life changer.

Send your dog to school One of the best things you can do for your dog is to take him or her to school. Just ask the folks at the Potter League for Animals, who successfully run a dogtraining center that turns out the most companionable and well behaved dogs in the area and offers many benefits for both dogs and owners. Classes are in a modern, 1,600-squarefoot facility where instructors use rewardbased methods and positive reinforcement to help you and your pet succeed. While all dogs benefit from training, puppy classes are critical to your dog’s wellbeing and yours, too. In the first six-week course, your puppy will learn to socialize with other dogs and

people while you become knowledgeable in handling typical puppy problems like housetraining, chewing, jumping and nipping. A subsequent course advances your puppy to the next level. There are also specialty classes that address particular behaviors and classes in loose leash walking, leash reactivity and recall.

It’s Apple Fest time at Young Family Farm Visitors arriving at the Young Family Farm in Little Compton are immediately greeted by a profusion of color. There’s green, of course – the predominant color of the 200 acres of farmland, peach, and apple orchards surrounding The Stand, where the literal fruits of their labor are sold. Within, you’ll find rich, red heirloom tomatoes, lush peaches, orange pumpkins and bright yellow summer squash. But it’s the colors you don’t expect: white pumpkins, tiny, super-sweet orange tomatoes, and billiard-sized tomatoes, striped like the zebra for which they’re named, that make every visit to Young’s an adventure. Farmers Tyler and Karla Young purchased the farm in 1997, and it began as a small wholesale potato business. But the Youngs envisioned a business growing fruits, vegetables and flowers, and offering them for sale to the local community. When Tyler’s first strawberry crop was ready, Karla sold the beautiful berries on a picnic table on the front lawn. Before long, the word was out, and Tyler began growing a variety of vegetables for the summer and year-round customers who flocked to the farm. With the help of their three daughters, the Youngs soon expanded their sales into a diversified wholesale and retail business. The lawn quickly became too small for their inventory, and they opened their retail farmstand in the fall of 2006, just in time for their first apple crop. In addition to fruits and vegetables, pickyour-own apples, and seasonal products such as annuals and perennials, The Stand

Italian heritage inspires kitchen and pasta shop When Phil DeDucca opened up Nonni’s Italian Restaurant and Pasta Shop on Stafford Road in Tiverton four years ago, he named it for his Italian grandmother, who was his inspiration. “We start with the best ingredients and a commitment to quality to bring you foods that you could expect to purchase and eat in the heart of the old country,” Phil says. “Whether you purchase some of our excellent pastas and sauces to prepare at home, or choose to dine with us, or carry out, you can be sure of one thing. Nonni would be proud of how we’re doing things,” says Phil, whose restaurant has earned a Rhode Island Monthly Best Award. Nonni’s is unique in that it is not only a pasta factory and retail store, but also a restaurant with a full kitchen, large dining room and a well-stocked bar with an excellent wine list. Authentic Italian meals are served hot off the stoves or out of the pizza ovens and served by a knowledgeable wait staff. Delicious desserts, cappuccinos and desert martinis are highlights. Nonni’s is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Friday, Saturday, Sunday until 10 p.m. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday nights. Don’t buy a generator in a box — go local, do it right “Service and response are our greatest assets,” says Warren-based Columbus Fan and Machine Corporation owner David Cioe. “We are definitely service-oriented.” Tucked into the neighborhood on historic Baker Street, the company is a repair headquarters for AC and DC motors and pumps, has a machine shop, does fabricating, and manufactures Cooling Blowers for the AC and DC motor industry. Through his other company at the same location, DC Industrial Sales, Cioe distributes products such as AC motors, DC motors, generators, line reactors, transformers, and many other industrial electrical products. Cioe took a giant step into retailing last year when a local retailer left the consumer home generator business, picking up where they left off. It was a natural fit to the sales of generators his company had already been marketing for years. Today, Columbus Fan is fast becoming the go-to place for portable and automatic home standby generators. They also stock and sell manual transfer switches, residential and commercial pressure washers, sump and submersible pumps, lead-free hoses, nozzles and adapters. And they back their growing sales with a strong service and repair commitment that larger retailers may find hard to match. With nearly 50 years in the industrial electrical field, David’s experience is hard to beat, too. Since generators are such a hot product now, Cioe wants his customers to know that when they buy a generator from Columbus Fan, they will not just be receiving their purchase “in a box.” Nor will they have to worry about its assembly, its smooth operation or any of the other problems that can surface with the delivery of a boxed item. Unlike many generator retailers, like the big box stores for instance, Columbus Fan will completely assemble the generator, fill it with oil, test it, deliver it in the local area, set it up in your outside location, make any electrical connections necessary and ensure it operates perfectly. They will continue to maintain the generator with scheduled service calls. If any problems occur, they will make all the arrangements for warranty repairs directly with the manufacturer. Non-warranty parts and repairs are also part of what Columbus Fan does. “When you buy from us, we will prep it, test it, make sure it fits together and doesn’t have any missing parts, fill it with oil, and be available for any issues that may surface,” says David. “Who would want to buy from someone who doesn’t provide service? We sold it to you, we will maintain it, and we’ll fix it, if necessary,” he says. Hence the company motto of, “We service what we sell.” Next time a large storm disrupts your electrical power, you’ll be happy to know your generator is ready for the job. And that Columbus Fan is in your local area. Columbus Fan sells generators from such well-established manufacturers as Winco, Subaru, General Electric, Briggs and Stratton, DeWalt, Pramac, Generac, Westinghouse, Powermate, and Gentron, with portable and standby versions available, and engines being made by manufacturers such as Briggs & Stratton, Honda and Subaru. “We tend to align ourselves with the most service-oriented manufacturers,” says David. There are two kinds of generators for consumers to consider. The automatic standby version connects directly through the electrical panel, and with an automatic transfer switch, turns on automatically when power

Columbus Fan offers every kind of generator imaginable — from portable to automatic, standby — and they have the expertise to select the right size for your home, and install it properly.

fails, and also turns off automatically when utility power comes back on. Most can handle the electrical needs of the entire house. The portable version must be turned on and off manually, delivering its electricity through a manual transfer switch, which is electrically tied in to run such items as boilers, well pumps, sump pumps, refrigera-

tors, etc. There are other reasons to purchase an item as important as a generator from a company like Columbus Fan. According to David, when you purchase a generator from a large retailer, they are able to offer their products at a lower cost because they sometimes have cut out features to keep the

price down, like low oil shutdown switches or voltage regulators, especially critical for computers and other high tech equipment, and some of which are important safety features, plus no time was spent on the generator assembling it or testing it. “Some people aren’t really sure what they’re buying in generators,” he says. “They might buy something rated for a 10K (10,000 watt) surge, but they are really getting an 8K (8,000 watt) continuous rating. You should size your generator by the continuous duty rating needed, and the surge rating should be large enough to start your inductive loads,” he says. “People often overbuy more than they need,” he adds. “We size a generator to specific customer needs, often saving them money in the process,” he says. Cioe says there are also fuel considerations to factor in. “We offer generators that use gasoline, liquid propane, natural gas or diesel. We also offer a tri-fuel version generator that runs on liquid propane, natural gas or gasoline.” “Here in New England, consumers should consider proper add-ons for their standby generators, like a cold weather package which consists of an engine block heater and a battery warmer,” he adds. “A lot of retailers don’t tell you that or don’t offer it. If they do offer it, you have to install it yourself — they hand it to you as an addon kit.” Columbus Fan stocks generators, manual transfer switches, trickle chargers, parts, maintenance kits, oil and stabilizers for fuel, as well as replacement batteries, in addition to providing maintenance and service. “We are definitely one-stop shopping,” says David. “We will arrange to have our electricians and plumbers work with our customers for installation estimates on their generators.” David Cioe has been working in the industrial electrical sector since 1972, beginning in sales and service at an industrial electrical business in Providence. He started DC Industrial Sales 30 years ago, distributing products such as AC & DC motors, transformers, line reactors, drive systems, tachometers, encoders, generators, and the like. Originally he was in Cranston, but ended up moving this business to his hometown of Barrington. He became the largest distributor of cooling blowers and filters for Columbus Fan & Machine, which interestingly enough was located in Warren, Ohio. About 16 years ago, he bought that company and moved it

Proud to be Part of the East Bay October 2, 2013 Page 13 along with DC Industrial Sales to Warren, R.I. His move allowed him the space to expand Columbus Fan into a motor repair and industrial machine shop. The company manufacturers cooling blowers and filters for the AC and DC motor industry, selling throughout the entire United States, and does on-site machine shop and repair services, offers AC and DC motor rebuilding, pump repair, grinding, welding, parts fabrication and other services. His clients include hospitals, steel plants, municipalities, as well as motor manufacturers. He is proud of the fact that the cooling blower products are made right here in Warren, R.I., USA. Among the many products and services available at Columbus Fan is a full line of pumps, including swimming pool pumps, submersible pumps, sprinkler pumps, sump pumps, grinder pumps made by Little Giant, Goulds, Franklin Electric, StaRite, Pentair, to name a few. Sales and repairs of pumps as well as spare parts are available. “We are also able to offer small mower and snow blower repairs and tune ups,” which is a great convenience. All in all, his companies are diverse in all they have to offer to consumers in the local area. The expansion into the generator industry grew at an opportune time, and with Cioe’s background, was a natural fit with all his companies have to offer. David reminds consumers to not only shop by price but to consider the all-important service after the sale, and what that is worth to them in saving time and aggravation. “We are local and here to help educate the consumer about what they are investing in, hand-holding if you will. The big box stores may have a lower price due to the large volume they move, but will they be there to personally help you after the sale or repair it when it breaks? That’s worth investing in.” Columbus Fan and DC Industrial Sales enjoy their location in the Warren community. The “Enterprise Zone” and all it had to offer small businesses was a big drawing card for Cioe setting up in Warren. “The town has always been very supportive of small business and we cannot say enough about the great neighborhood we are in.” A lot goes on under his business roof. Cioe is a lifelong, very active member of the Bristol County Elks. He and his fellow Elks members are responsible for launching and continuing the East Bay Cares Food Program, which assists food pantries, local churches, and soup kitchens in the East Bay area with the food items they need that are in short supply. At any given time, you will walk into his very busy business and find cases of just-purchased canned goods and food items waiting to be distributed to those in need in the local area. Many of his fellow Elks stop by his office to check in, say hello, and see what needs to be done in the community. ‘Elks Care-Elks Share’ is the other motto that stands sideby-side with ‘We Service What We Sell,’ all adding up to one focused person working hard to make a difference in people’s lives. “At the end of the day, making a difference in people’s lives IS the all-important measure,” says Cioe. Columbus Fan is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is located at 59 Baker St. in Warren.

Redwood Nursery can plan and plant your dream garden It’s very fitting that words of advice for gardeners should come from the folks at Redwood Nursery and Garden Center in Swansea. Founder Manuel Vales has a long history of gardening since the early ’60s, when he was groundskeeper for Blithewold. The late Blithewold owner, Marjorie Lyon, made Manuel a bequest so he could start his own business, and he did. He named the nursery Redwood, after a seedling he planted from the giant sequoia still growing on the Blithewold grounds. Today, a dedicated knowledgeable team that includes Manuel’s wife, Jacqueline Vales, and their children, are kept very busy with the full-service garden center operation run by manager and part owner Jacqueline, assistant manager John Whitney, and master gar-

dener and head landscape designer Tony Sousa, as well as the Redwood Landscape and Property Maintenance company, run by Lisa Vales and Moses Camara. Manuel still keeps a watchful eye on things. Redwood Nursery, over the more than 30 years it has been in business, has grown from a small plot of land to more than two acres of exhibit space for landscape-size trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. It’s a beautiful sight to behold for those driving by on Rt. 6. “If we don’t have it, we’ll find it for a customer,” says Jacqueline of the staff’s customer service attitude and its full range of plants, shrubs and trees. “Fall is definitely the time to plant,” she says, and they are happy to do it for you or advise you on how to do it.

The nursery carries a comprehensive line up of organic products, including loam, compost and fertilizer, as well as mulches, sod and a unique collection of garden art. They also are distributors of Nantucket Sheds and Playmor swing sets, and specialize in fall decorating materials, like straw, cornstalks, gourds and pumpkins. Tony Sousa, Redwood’s master gardener and landscape designer, is also a spinning instructor in his spare time. He took up gardening years ago, while working at a medical company, and eventually turned his avocation into a profession, getting his degree from URI. He has worked with both residential and commercial customers in designing everything from beautiful small patio gardens to larger landscape projects and is hap-

py to help customers know what’s best for particular sites. Redwood Nursery oversees the planting of materials specified in Tony’s designs and warranties shrubs and plants for six months. Planning it, planting it, and maintaining it, Redwood Nursery & Garden Center on Route 6 in Swansea is the place to begin.

The dress makes the woman, Ana's makes the dress Ana Linhares has been designing clothes all her life. She grew up in the Azores, the oldest of 12 children, and learned the skill from her mother, who learned it from her mother. As a child, Ana helped support her family by literally making clothes for her younger siblings, and helping Mom's seamstress business, which she ran from the house. When she came to America, Ana found a job where many Azorean immigrants found jobs — doing piece work in a factory. She eventually left the factory to work for a wealthy Barrington family, as their housekeeper, seamstress and part-time nanny. After 18 years in that role, she finally decided to do what she loves best — design clothes. Ana went to work for the former Payless Bridal in East Providence, where she did custom alterations and designs for bridesto-be. After a couple of years helping run that business, Ana had a choice. The owner was moving to Florida; the business was Ana's if she wanted it. She decided to go for it. Fifteen years later, the story has a delightfully happy ending. When Payless became Ana's Bridal, the business worked with about 50 to 100 brides per year. Today, they help nearly 500. And staying true to a heritage that now stretches four generations (Ana's daughters, Michelle Teixeira and Kimberly Linhares, help run the business and the workload), the vast majority of those 500 brides receive custom-design dresses. Whether it's a new neckline, a shorter

train, different sleeves, no sleeves, an open back, or any other alteration, Ana's (usually Ana herself) makes the dress fit the woman. "I tell every bride, this is your gown," Michelle said. "They have to feel comfortable and confident walking down that aisle." Ana's customers have come from Bermuda, Canada and the United Kingdom for her services, though most are within short driving distance of East Providence. That alone makes Ana's remarkable. Most brides believe they can receive custom, high-end gowns only in places like New York City, Boston or Los Angeles. Ana's creates them every week, typically at prices far below the major fashion centers. "You can find the same gown in New York, and you're going to see a difference of $500 to $2,000 in the price of the dress alone," Michelle said. "Some brides tend to think custom work is out of their reach, but it might not be." Though the emphasis is clear on the brides, Ana's typically outfits entire wedding parties, including bridal parties, flower girls, and mothers of the bride and groom. They rent and sell tuxedos, too. If you're getting married and thinking about the gown, move quickly. Michelle recommends that brides begin the process a year to a year and a half in advance — though they've even helped brides with less than a day's notice in an emergency. You can find Ana's online at anasbridal.com or on Facebook at facebook.com/AnasBridalBoutique1.

And it doesn’t get any more hometown than this—he lives in the home he grew up in on Beach Road and is a graduate of Bristol High School and The University of Rhode Island. For the past 12 years, Ken has managed his MetLife Agency following a successful management career with the company. “I just simply wanted to get back to helping people.” “It’s just really nice to live and work in this beautiful town.” Ken shares his office space with his MetLife collaborative partner, Maria G Souza, who he has worked with for over 20 years. As the agency’s property and casualty specialist for MetLife Auto & Home, Maria handles all of the automobile and homeowner coverage as well as boat and recreational vehicles. This allows Ken to focus on his financial services practice which is divided between his individual/family clients and his business clients. Each client has access to a full line of insurance and investment products from not only MetLife, but from numerous financial companies. While the name MetLife is prominent in the agency’s signage and marketing, the office operates more like an independent agency. “MetLife allows us to offer a full line of insurance and investment products from many well-known financial companies.” “Since each client’s needs and circumstances are unique, it is important to match the best product and services to

accomplish the client’s goal.” “This process provides that the client obtain the best value, features or performance on the product they require to satisfy their need.” It has been a highly successful team, as the office has been a perennial recipient of the company’s prestigious Quality Service Award. As collaborative partners, Ken

and Maria historically rank in the top ten of the companies rankings. “It’s nice to be recognized for your sales and service by the company, but I just try to educate people with the knowledge to make informed decisions.” In doing so, we make life a little easier, one family or business at a time while providing a valuable service.”

Linda, a registered nurse, named the facility for her mentor and nursing school benefactor, a woman known for her unselfish and compassionate care-giving. “I could think of no better tribute,” said Linda, “than to name it after Grace Barker.” Today, Linda and John’s daughter, Mary Beth, runs the facility along with her husband, Mark Lescault. In 1998, Mark and Mary Beth opened The Willows, an adjacent facility offering assisted living as well as adult day health services. The past year has seen home care services added through Pinnacle Home Care, a company they coown with other nursing home owners and administrators. It’s a true family business: Mary Beth and Mark’s local roots run deep, and the business remains family-owned at a time when corporate ownership is increasingly becoming the norm. “We are blessed with staff longevity and are pleased to continue serving this wonderful community,” says Mary Beth. The sense of family is what makes Grace Barker and The Willows unique, agrees Mark, and it is tremendously beneficial for the elders in their care. “It is very comforting for residents to see the same familiar, smiling faces day after day.” Mark also stresses that Grace Barker is the only facility in the area to provide a full continuum of services for the elderly. In addition to short-term rehabilitative care in the nursing center, the adult day health services at The Willows provides a full day of activities for elders who might otherwise be homebound, waiting for a caregiver to

Adult day health members return home in the afternoon after an active, social day, ready to keep to a normal evening’s schedule.” The Willows assisted living residence provides home-cooked meals, housekeeping services, medication assistance and transportation, as well as occupational, physical and speech therapy. A full slate of events lets residents be as active as they would like, from exercise classes to nature walks to cookouts — or even just a Sunday afternoon watching the big game with friends on the movie screen. Families who join the Grace Barker nurs-

ing center community will find that as things do change, they will be prepared. “We make every effort to avoid surprises,” says Mary Beth. “We know our residents and communicate regularly with their family members. When something changes, we coordinate with the resident or member’s family and medical team to determine what our next steps should be. It’s a level of familiarity and continuity that truly sets us apart.”

Big or small, Steve’s Transmission does it all No one puts transmissions to the test more than the local police departments. So where do they take their cars for transmission repair? That would be Steve’s Transmission, known throughout the area for its “cutting edge of transmission technology.” Derek Mallozzi has owned this wellestablished business since 2005 when he moved it to its present location on Metacom Avenue. But his history with the company goes way back to 1988, when then owner John Satti saw the potential in a young man and took him under his wing. “He taught me from the ground up,” says Derek, of his mentor, who trained him first how to install a transmission and ultimately how to rebuild it completely, working on his rebuilding education for six years, after the regular work day was over. About his thorough education, Derek says John was his “teacher, dean, mentor. He was really like a father to me and he taught me everything he knew about transmissions,” says Derek. John turned the business over to him when he retired in ’05. And Derek has spent the time since then building the business and expanding into other automotive services as well, like oil changes, tires and high speed balancing, brakes, axles and drive shafts, and clutches. He features the latest in diagnostic equipment for all makes of vehicles. Today, Steve’s Transmission, with four employees, pretty much does it all when it comes to auto and truck services. But its specialty is still transmissions, and with its powerful large lift, Steve’s can handle

customers happy,” he says. He must have the right ingredients, because his customers keep coming back, and they come from all over the region – Westport, Newport, Providence, even Warwick. “Big or small, I do it all,” Derek says with pride.

Sakonnet Early Learning – putting ‘children first’ for three decades Some kids have all the luck. They go to Sakonnet Early Learning Center, a special place just brimming with all the things kids love to learn and do, and dedicated professionals to help them have fun doing it. For parents who want the best for their children — and who doesn’t — there’s still time to register for the 2013-2014 sessions and after-school programs. And what a year it’s going to be. SELC is entering its 30th year, and there’s a lot to celebrate. “I always dreamed of operating a quality child care center and learning facility, catering to the needs of youngsters and their parents,” says owner/director Deborah Murphy Raposa, an early childhood elementary education and child psychology major at Roger Williams University. “In September 1984, I opened SELC as a one-school house,” she says. Now, 30 years later, it has been licensed for childcare and pre-school ages from 18 months to 12 years old and continues to grow, and the children of former students are in its programs. Innovative activities include a full and half-day pre-school program, full and part-time child care, before and after school programs, and school vacation and summer camps. This thriving educational enterprise has expanded into a large stateof-the art facility, offering a developmental agenda that meets children’s social, emotional, cognitive, needs. Professional development is a high priority, with many staff members receiving multiple certificates for training with Rhode Island Early Learning Standards and Common Core Assessment, as well as

plan,” says Deb. Activities include parents’ breakfasts and activities, Christmas and Easter events and other major holidays. And wait till you hear about the 30th anniversary plans!
