Innovation and hard work sustain MRT for 100 years MRT Jewelers is the number one diamond dealer in the state of Rhode Island, carries the largest selection of diamond stud earrings in all of New England, and boasts a 7,000-square-foot showroom featuring an extensive selection of inventory, but that is only part of its story. A family-owned business since 1918, MRT is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. In a time when many retailers are closing or have had to cut back because of increasing competition from online businesses and other factors, MRT is thriving, due to a combination of innovation, hard work, exceptional customer service, and business savvy. Started in 1918 by the Radoccia and Tasca families, MRT began as a service, repair and wholesale jewelry business. When Joseph Audette bought the business with a silent partner in 1972, it was located on the third floor of a Providence building, with little foot traffic and limited parking, and was still primarily focused on the wholesale and service part of the industry. Audette, only 25 years old at the time, continued to manage the wholesale business but also began to grow the retail side. In the early ’90s, he moved MRT from downtown to East Providence, and the retail sales began to take off. They moved up the street to their current location in 2005. In addition to the spacious showroom, the store houses a 1,000-squarefoot design room used for repairs, restorations and custom designs. Joseph’s son, David Audette, joined the business in 1998 and began to really focus on the retail side of the business. “We have continued to be successful for a number of reasons,” says David. “We carry very high-end pieces, but we also have a huge selection under $100. We have clients coming up from Newport, and we also service our local neighborhood, which we are very proud of. We have to be knowledgeable, we need to carry a large inventory — which can be risky — and we have to be confident in our ability to sell. “We are also very hands on,” continues Audette. “We are not absentee owners. Every time a customer comes in, he or she will speak to an owner or someone very knowledgeable. We take the time to make our customers feel comfortable and answer all of their questions.” According to Audette, there is no store in the area that is better at assisting young people who are making their first significant jewelry purchase, such as an engagement ring or wedding band. And because MRT continues to invest in its inventory, customers get to see live products instead

something basically sight unseen.” Audette says the success of the business is a testament to his father and the courage it took to invest in the company at such a young age. “He was just a hard worker who wanted to make a living,” he says. “He never dreamed it would grow this much, but we continue to get busier every year. The key is to keep investing in your brand and to continue to innovate; once you start to coast, it sets you up to get passed by the competition. We will never coast.”

Caron Jewelers

Your trusted family jeweler since 1956

Joe and Diane Caron

Caron Jewelers, family-owned and part of the community Caron Jewelers is a family-owned and operated jewelry business that was first opened in 1956 by Bert and Dot Caron. Current owner Joe Caron, a GIA graduate gemologist and master watchmaker, learned the inner workings of running the family business at a very early age. “My father taught me to repair watches and solder silver jewelry,” he remembers. “I even opened my own electric shaver repair business in the back of the store when I was 12.” Though the store changed hands for a brief period in the mid-2000s, Caron returned to the family business in 2014. Now an iconic window front on Hope Street in Bristol, the store is known for its colorful and whimsical displays that change with the seasons and are created by Joe’s wife, Diane, who is also an artist and jewelry designer. Caron Jewelers has undergone many transformations, including a renovated interior. The modern ambience and charming layout showcases an eclectic selection of classic and modern jewelry designs. Current high-end lines include: Nicole Barr, Marika, British designer Jonathan Lynne Ltd., luxury men’s and women’s watches from Citizen, vintage estate jewelry, and the celebrity-praised Doron

Caron Jewelers 473 Hope St., Bristol, R.I. 401-253-9460 https://caronjewelers.com/ Paloma’s Dove collection. The Michi Collection is designed by Diane and features exotic international gemstones from Rare Earth Mining Co., and since no two stones are alike, each piece is entirely unique. Along with designer inventory, the store also carries handcrafted pottery from Three Wheel Studios in Providence, artist etchings by Diane, as well as its very own signature collection of Mt. Hope Jewelry, which features old Mt. Hope bridge tokens incorporated into bracelets, cuff links and other unique designs. They also create custom-designed bridal, engagement and fine jewelry pieces. Joe and Diane are appreciative of the warm welcome they have received since reopening. “We love being a part of the East Bay business scene,” says Joe. “It is an amazingly diverse community, and we enjoy getting to know our customers personally while providing a trust-based service.”

Make a Bold Statement Caron Jewelers specializes in fine jewelry, rare gemstones, and custom wedding and engagement rings. We have a wide selection of luxury watches for men and women, as well as artisan giftware from Rhode Island designers. Jewelry and watch repair, battery replacement, and cleaning services available.

‘The best gift for your best friend’ East Bay Pet Fence was started in 2000 when owner Dane Coleman was looking for a fence company to install a system for his dog Matilda. According to Dane, a couple of “head-spinning estimates” forced him to find an alternative, and the company was born. From the beginning, he has tried to treat customers the way he would expect to be treated. To that end, he promises to: provide honest and accurate information about underground system capabilities and limitations, to offer fair and competitive prices, to provide professional installation, to be available for follow-up questions, and to assist in any way to make the system a success for dogs and their owners. “Being a smaller company, we are able to provide exceptional customer service,” says Dane. “I know all of my clients and personally take care of any issues they may be having with their systems.” One of the best features of underground fencing is that it allows dogs the full run of an owner’s yard, rather than being tied up or confined to a run. Underground fencing was developed with veterinarians and animal behaviorists to ensure safety and peace of mind for owners and pets. Training is simple, requiring 10-15 minutes per day for

Matilda Mae, the dog who inspired a company. 14 days, and once a dog is trained to the system, it will typically only receive a handful of corrections over the course of its life. If you have a dog and a yard, underground fencing is the answer to everyone’s happiness!

BCA prepares students for college, and for life Barrington Christian Academy is an accredited, regional, non-denominational Christian day school for students in grades K-12 that nurtures students in a loving and caring environment and is committed to high standards. BCA encourages students in the development of their God-given gifts and abilities — spiritually, academically, socially, and physically — and prepares students to successfully pursue college. They are holding an Open House on Sunday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. Beginning in September, BCA will provide mixed-age classrooms for students in K to 3. This model will provide flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace and provide the opportunity for gifted students to be challenged with work above grade level. This model will also give teachers the ability to initiate differentiated learning. Leading by serving is paramount at BCA. Students participate in Missions Week every year (High School students

go to Ecuador, Jamaica, or Philadelphia; Middle School students serve in the local community; Lower School students raise money for a local charity). Lower School students make 100 lunches for the homeless every month and deliver to the R.I. Dream Center. In addition to academics and community service projects, there is a strong emphasis on performing arts, with a high school production of a play and a musical every year. The choral program includes all grade levels, and visual art instruction includes drawing, painting, ceramics, and photography.

Barrington Christian Academy (BCA) is a private, independent, college-preparatory day school serving students in grades K–12. Guided by a love of truth, an innovative school culture, and a student-centered approach, we teach core academic content— and ask students to go above and beyond with extensive opportunities for serving and skill-building in the community and the bigger world around us. These “vision-based learning” experiences give us purpose, fuel

our passion, and set us apart. BCA is accredited by both the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC). We are the only dually-accredited Christian college-preparatory K–12 school in Rhode Island.

As a nondenominational Christian school community, we welcome students from all faith backgrounds.

Custom and quality kitchen and bath designs, for 15 years Riley Kitchen & Bath was started in 2003 by Michael Riley and is celebrating its 15-year anniversary this year. After working for other companies doing designwork for a living, Riley realized how it could be done even better, so he branched out on his own. What the company offers its customers is a truly individualized, personal experience. “Each space is unique, and each person is unique in how they use that space,” says Michael’s wife and business partner, Lisa. “We have had so many clients tell us that no one cared about their project the way that we cared, and no one gave them the same amount of information and attention.” The company specializes in the design of kitchen and bath spaces — primarily kitchens — and also sells the products that will be used in the finished product, but the client uses the contractor of their choice for the construction portion of the project. This avoids the cost mark-up which often occurs when companies use subcontractors. “Because of the way we operate our business, we are able to give our clients the

best price in the end,” says Riley. She emphasizes that their extensive selection of cabinets and countertops allows them to design spaces for every budget. Their cabinets range from entry level prices, to semi-custom, to full custom. “We have something for everyone,” says Riley. “We sell all levels and price points and we are very selective with the products we offer, making sure that the quality is not compromised. We do our research and find the best products for every budget.” She says that the best part of her job is seeing the projects completed. “It is so rewarding to see the ideas and designs we create on CAD finally come to life.”

Little ones in good care at Sea Side Nursery School Since opening Sea Side Nursery School in 1983, Pamela Pinskey has seen numerous changes in the challenges faced by children and families. While hundreds of children have passed through the doors of Sea Side School in the past 35 years, often followed years later by their own children, Pamela’s commitment to fostering their capacity to meet these chalPamela Pinskey lenges has remained unwavering and is reflected by the continued growth of the programs and capacities of the school. Consistently exceeding standards for academics, the school provides enriching exposure to the arts, music and nature in a warm environment centered by the mission of fostering child development. In 1995 Ms. Pinskey was touched by the recognition of her commitment to children by Mr. Rogers, as reflected in a letter he wrote to her (kept in a corner of the school house). Mr. Roger’s quiet, simple and sincere compassion for children continues to inspire her and others. Roger Williams University awarded Ms. Pinskey the Distinguished Alumna of the Year in 2013. Her daily practice of being

Sea Side Nursery School 19 Verndale Circle Bristol, RI 02809 401-254-0143 enthusiastic, positive and energetic continues to inspire others to do the same. Fostering social development has always been a central goal where children are taught respect for one another, adults and the planet in a warm, nurturing and tolerant environment. Keeping it focused for children, the general expectation at Sea Side is that all students will simply ‘be nice’. The importance of this goal has been evident in Pamela’s mission of keeping the staff to student ratio low, allowing children more individual attention. This has always been a focus at Sea Side School. In light of ample evidence of the benefits of exposure to music to academic and character development, Pamela has built on her appreciation of music and prior experience as a professional musician,

with the implementation of the Music Together Program which brings diverse types of music to children, teaching them rhythm and tonal patterns and building confidence for musical self-expression. The children begin every day with music, which is then interwoven through the day’s activities. Her appreciation of nature, and the relevance of its lessons to child development

is evident in the time children spend outdoors, where their experience is enriched by an environment alive with numerous species of birds, frogs, and fish and a wonderful garden of flowers, ponds and native plants. Located in a quiet residential setting, pleasantly cooled by several large shade trees and safely surrounded by tongue and groove fencing, Sea Side has been operat-

ed by Ms. Pinskey as a family business since its inception. Her daughter Sasha, now a co-owner of the business, also works as a one of the teachers at the school. While the challenges faced by children and families will continue to change in the future, the commitment of Sea Side PreSchool to children will continue to flourish.

Safe, enriching programs for children at the YMCA The Newman and Bayside branches of the YMCA of Greater Providence offer before and after school programming through the Out of School Time (OST) program for children in kindergarten through middle school as well as summer camp. OST Programs are held at their branches, as well as at three convenient school-based locations in East Providence. All East Providence students can be serviced at these three schools, and the Y offers transportation to and from the schools. The YMCA is a charitable organization which provides scholarships for families in need. The Y will also accept income-eligible state vouchers from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. More than 80 percent of the children and families they serve will receive some sort of financial assistance. The goal of the OST program is to give all children the opportunity to be the best they can be; to build confident children today who will be contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. All of their OST programs are staffed by individuals who understand the need for children to learn new skills, make new friends, be physically active, and succeed in school. As a parent, you can be assured that the

safety of children in their care is of utmost importance. They utilize a rigorous screening and orientation process, and all staff members are trained in the recognition and prevention of child abuse. Every YMCA employee must adhere to an established

code of conduct. The OST curriculum focuses on impacting the academic, emotional, and physical development of each child. The OST staff emphasizes the importance of a healthy spirit, mind and body. Through the Y’s

unique “Kids on the Move” program, the well-being of each student is woven into the daily curriculum. Children learn the benefits of good nutrition and healthy food choices while enjoying nourishing snacks. They learn stress management and techniques through engaging, fun activities and participate in games to keep them physically active. Children explore and develop creativity and self-expression through drama, dance and mixed art activities. Y camps offer values-oriented, campercentered programs that help children discover their talents and feel a sense of belonging. The activities combine friendships, adventure, and personal growth, creating days as unique as each camper and memories that last a lifetime. Newman and Bayside both offer day camps and extended day programs. Sign up today before summer is over!

We make everything from scratch and our cooks work diligently to cook orders to perfection.” The Cardinals bought their first IHOP in Middletown 19 years ago and have been invested and involved in the local communities ever since, hosting fundraisers, sponsoring teams, and even serving as Grand Marshals at the Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2016. “When your family needs help, turn to ours.”

Silver Creek

Manor

A great place to work, makes a great place to live Silver Creek Manor opened its doors in 1970 and has been providing its senior residents with innovative choices and quality care ever since. Located in the heart of Bristol, just a short walk from the harbor, the facility features a beautiful garden and outdoor porch and overlooks Silver Creek. Family-owned since 1977, Silver Creek prides itself on creating a family atmosphere for both its residents and employees. “We are very family oriented,” says administrator Kim Ciociola. “We do things to make it fun to work here, so our employees tend to stay for a long time. We believe that if we treat our employees well, they will treat our residents well, and then everyone is happy.” Ciociola also believes that being independently owned allows them to look at issues differently than if they were owned by a corporation. “We are able to monitor and assess situations on the premises and make any necessary changes right away based on our findings,” she says. “Our employees have a real voice, so if they

identify anything that can be done better, or if they have specific requests for equipment or anything that a resident might need, we are able to address these things immediately.” Silver Creek has earned a Silver Quality award from the American Health Care Association and is working toward Gold. They take their claim that “the resident comes first” very seriously, even if it means setting up tents in the rain to make sure that residents would be comfortable and the streak of attending the Bristol 4th of July Parade was not broken a few years ago! Efforts like this, along with so many others, make Silver Creek the special place that it is.

‘Our students are our best advertisement’ Outstanding Fine Arts Program, Foreign Language & Sports, Full Day Kindergarten

Pre-K (3 & 4 yrs.) to Grade 8

Extended Day - Financial Aid Lee Ann Nunes, Principal

42 BISHOP AVE, RUMFORD, RI TEL: 401-434-2338 www.STMARGARETSCH.org

Founded in 1955 by Monsignor Bernard T. Lennon, the former pastor of Saint Margaret Parish, St. Margaret School is a topnotch academic school for children in pre-K through grade 8, but just as importantly, it is a place where kindness and compassion are encouraged, where children are taught about the importance of helping those less fortunate, and where educators work hard to instill a moral compass in their students. “Our students are accepted at all of the top high schools throughout the state,” says Principal Lee Ann Nunes, “and admissions directors are always impressed with our kids, academically, socially and morally.” The school works hard to foster a sense of moral responsibility in its students, through fundraisers for various charities, food deliveries to homeless shelters, and numerous other community service projects. Academically, St. Margaret’s meets each child’s needs through a variety of teaching methods. Small class sizes allow each child to receive the attention he or she needs to thrive. In addition to the core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Sci-

ence and Religion, students participate in Music, Art, Physical Education, Computer and Library classes. French and Spanish are introduced in third grade. At a time when many schools are being forced to downsize art programs, St. Margaret’s boasts a robust Arts department. Highlights include Fine Arts night, where students can showcase their work, and an annual musical production which involves students in grades 4 to 8. St. Margaret’s provides students with all of the benefits of a small private school at a fraction of the cost, and due to its endowment, is also able to offer financial aid to qualified applicants. Nunes believes that one of the best reasons to attend St. Margaret’s is because of the character of its students. “Our students are our best advertisement,” she says. “They are such a great reflection of the school.”

Full Channel is truly a hometown company Full Channel, based in Warren, is a company that prides itself on being an integral party of the community. Their goal is to give residents of the East Bay an alternative to services provided by an out-of-state corporation. If it was not for small independent operators like Full Channel providing TV, voice and internet to the East Bay, price competition would not exist. Full Channel will continue to work to provide a competitive price for all their services. What sets Full Channel apart from their competition is that their employees live here and work here — every employee works within 30 minutes of the local office in Warren. Customer service calls stay in the East Bay area and are answered by local employees — they do not use a customer service system that forwards calls to other countries, as is the practice for other companies.

Full Channel 57 Everett St., Warren, R.I. 401-310-0128 www.fullchannel.com

Installations are normally done within a 10-day period after applying for services — most customers get installed in less than 10 days. All their installers are trained, local employees. Full Channel was purchased in January of this year by CountryWide Broadband of St. Louis, MO. One of the partners, Michael Whitaker, became a Bristol resident in February. Full Channel supports and is a proud member of the East Bay Chamber of Commerce. Michael Whitaker is honored to be an active member of the Chamber of Commerce board of Directors. Full Channel is a proud long-time sponsor of the Concerts on the Commons in Bristol. The company is working with the League of Women’s Voters to produce and edit and broadcast the debates in September and October. Full Channel supports local youth sports teams and has for many years. They provide fast reliable internet service, with speeds starting at 160Mbps. — 30 times faster than DSL — and TV

Members of the Full Channel Team include (left to right) Elie Ghazal, Kevin Sustakowsky, Mike Whitaker, Doug Yock and Matt Torrenti. everywhere with the TV package. They offer reliable phone service with toll free options to Mexico and Canada, with rates that are about half the costs of the other carrier. Many people ask why their cable bill goes up every year, and it is unfortunate that the price for TV services has to increase every year. But Full Channel

has zero control of the cost of entertainment content. Their costs go up every year from 7 to 10 percent, depending on the station. As an example: When you hear about that sports free-agent receiving a $100-million-dollar contract, that money is passed on to the cable providers and they in turn pass that on to the end user.

When you hear that some actor gets $1,000,000 per episode of your favorite show, that just gets passed down to providers each year and in turn to the user. Full Channel prides itself on being competitive with pricing while offering great service and staying true to their commitment to its roots in the East Bay.
