Plante Jewelers
W
hile the shop may have been around for many years and is now run by a third generation owner, Plante Jewelers is anything but an old fuddy duddy place. In fact, it borders more on cutting edge, offering the latest jewelry designs to appeal to all ages and also new technology that can bring out the creativity and originality that’s been hiding deep inside of you. The experts at Plante Jewelers pride themselves on their custom design service, a long tradition at this very established establishment. But Plante takes design to a whole new level by involving customers in a high tech way as hands-on collaborators. A unique interactive design capability enables customers to come in with even the smallest glimmer of an idea and design a pendant or ring directly on a special computer program, with assistance from the staff. Got an old engagement ring that you inherited or simply don’t wear anymore for whatever the reason? Bring it in and turn it into a pendant for yourself or a daughter. No point in keeping those loose gemstones or pin in the bank vault when you can create an up-to-the-minute ring or pendant with this system and get the pleasure of wearing it. Designing on the program is an enjoyable, creative experience,
enabling you to quickly make any changes you want to or start all over again in a different direction. Your own custom design creation comes together very quickly when the jeweler has your computer model to work from and it can be ready to wear in just a couple of weeks. Of course, Plante is a full service jeweler too, offering repairs, appraisals, as well as custom design. Newly engaged couples, or those just thinking about it, like the “Diamond Workshop.” It’s a relaxed opportunity for couples to learn about diamond choices and what you should know about diamonds to make a wise decision about this important purchase. There’s no pressure, no obligation, just an educational and fun time learning all about diamonds. And when it comes to the newest jewelry designs from leading makers, Plante is definitely up-to- the-minute. Two 2011 collections have proven to be real attention getters among Plante customers. Be sure to check out the beautiful, contemporary silver pieces by Frederic Duclos and the latest oxidized silver finishes with enticing colored gemstones by Ron Rosen. Two new collections featuring diamonds, gemstones and pearls will be introduced later this fall. Nancy Plante points out that
while silver is really hot now, especially with the younger customers, so are all the white metals – platinum and white gold included. Plante Jewelers’ extensive inventory includes these white metals in beautiful textures and finishes, all available today. And those looking for the fashionably longer necklaces and textured pendants, as well as station necklaces, will find there are many excellent choices. Colored gem stones in rings, earrings and pendants are also in good supply, including those popular blue topaz and peridot (the choice for a first anniversary) gems. It’s a good thing that Plante makes it easy to layaway what catches your eye. Keeping customers happy with excellent service is one of the reasons Plante Jewelers has maintained such a fine reputation over the years. “Our staff really does enjoy helping people choose gifts,” says Nancy, explaining that many times they will make little notes about the likes and dislikes of customers for and keep a ‘wish list” of items and categories for many people. “We often send email reminders or make telephone calls about upcoming anniversaries and birthdays and when we know of something special on a wish list we pass the information along,” she says. Over the years, the folks at Plante
A Plante Jewelers customer had a diamond from her traditional solitaire ring, and wanted a more dramatic ring. This design was created on Plante's in-store computer system.
Jewelers have made a lot of customers happy with this approach. “We have a lot of fun with the wish lists – we get as excited as the customers do when we know someone is going to reeeive a beautiful gift!,” says Nancy. “Customers really appreciate the extra steps a salesperson takes to keep customers coming back, time after time.,” says Nancy. Be sure to visit Plante Jewelers’ Facebook page to stay on top of the latest jewelry fashions and
view a sampling of what’s new in the store. Located just a stone’s throw from Swansea Mall, Plante Jewelers is conveniently open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is closed on Sunday and Monday. Extended hours begin after Thanksgiving. Most credit cards are accepted.

Autumn Glen at Dartmouth
W
hen Autumn Glen opened its doors as an assisted living community in Dartmouth, Massachusetts in 1997, it established a new standard for gracious living for seniors seeking an environment where support was available when needed with a full slate of amenities that would contribute to a rewarding and enjoyable lifestyle. The country inn feel and welcoming staff made it the premiere choice for many seniors from the area who sought more than three square meals and bingo. And Autumn Glen more than lived up to their expectations. When the local assisted living company The Northbridge Companies purchased Autumn Glen (at that time it was called Heritage at Dartmouth), it was clear to the new owners that the logical next step was to expand the community to include the special care needed for a growing number of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairment issues. This June, Autumn Glen officially opened a new “Generations Program” in an attached 18,000 square foot addition, designed with the residents’ safety and quality of life in mind. Its circular structure, with 25 private and semi- private apartments in a spacious, light and airy building, features a secure door system and security monitoring, and opens to a large, landscaped interior court-
yard so residents may safely enjoy the outdoors. But the state-ofthe-art structure is just a part of what makes this memory care center unique in the region. Residents of the new Generations program enjoy the same delicious, cooked-from- scratch meals as the traditional assisted living residents, served in one of two dining rooms, in an inviting family-style setting. “It’s definitely not standard fare,” says Sharon Ricardi, vice president of operations at Northbridge Companies, and an acknowledged leader in Alzheimer’s care. “Thoughtful menus reflect the seasons and are changed four times a year. We emphasize local, in season foods, like cranberries and squash from local growers, herbs from Autumn Glens’ own garden to flavor foods, and seafood from local providers.” Several local favorites that people really enjoy in this region, such as the popular Chicken Chow Mein sandwiches, and almost anything made with linguica, as well as Portugese Sweet Breads make the transition from one menu to the next. The quality of the social day is also vital to a resident’s wellbeing. Activities like failure free crafts and art programs contribute to a full, rewarding day, overseen by a talented professional program director, Claire Desrosiers. Innovative programs like the S.T.A.R. Program (Senior
Therapeutic Activities for Residents) change weekly and keep seniors mentally and physically active. The Brain Gym, which features a nationally recognized memory strengthening program, is offered on specially adapted touch-screen computers and fully engages residents. Activities that duplicate the experience of living in one’s own home are also emphasized. A favorite is the newly introduced Memory Making Baking, a Northbridge exclusive, where residents mix, bake and enjoy a full experience that involves hands on tasting of the ingredients as they bake, specially chosen recipes that evoke aromas that bring back favorite memories, and a program where senses are all involved, which helps recall earlier days in the kitchen. “The residents love making things the old fashioned way and have a real sense of pride in their work” says Ms. Ricardi. “Few things can compare with the smell of gingerbread baking in the oven, topped with freshly made cream. It is a joy to see it being eaten warm by proud seniors who know they made it.” Just ask the residents of the assisted living facility who wend their way to the country kitchen in anticipation of a piece. At the heart of caring for individuals with memory impairment is the quality and level of care given to each resident by professional caretakers at Autumn Glen.
Autumn Glen’s location is just 20 miles from the Rhode Island border. Unlike in many other states, including adjacent Rhode Island, Massachusetts regulations require that all caregivers be Certified Nurses Aides, with extensive training in assisting residents with medications, personal care, bathing, grooming and dressing, and attuned to promoting maximum independence in a comfortable and safe environment. A staff relying on CNAs is an important distinction to consider when choosing care for those with memory loss and impairment, and due to that distinction and other rules that promote maximum independence in Massachusetts, Autumn Glen is seeing a great many Rhode Island families choosing to drive the 20 minutes to Dartmouth for memory care. Autumn Glen’s convenient location, just 20 miles from the Rhode
Island border and at the gateway to Cape Cod, make it easily accessible for those searching for the best care for their loved ones, where mind, body and soul are stimulated. “We’re drawing more people from outside our immediate area to Autumn Glen”, says Mark Barwise, Executive Director. He attributes this attraction to its surprisingly fair pricing, highly trained staff and exceptional, informed programs. “Once they see how different and innovative the Autumn Glen memory care building and programs are compared to other facilities, traveling a little further becomes unimportant,” Mr. Barwise feels. If you would like to experience the Autumn Glen difference, give Chris McGill, Director of Marketing, a call at 508 992-8880 to set up a tour. We can’t wait to meet you!

They come into the shop and know exactly what they want. “We’re here to answer any questions they might have,” he says. New pet owners will especially appreciate that. Pet Foods Plus also has a collection of fish, reptiles, guinea pigs, hamsters and bunnies for sale, as well as the food to feed them. Second Helpings Consignments and Thirds Resale Clothing
I
t really is true that everyone loves a bargain and the search for well priced items has made one little corner of Bristol a huge success story. Second Helpings Consignment Shop and its sister store, Thirds, located in the Gooding Avenue Plaza on Gooding Avenue in Bristol, has more than a little bit of everything for both adults and children, all amazingly priced. “You can really get a good bargain at either store,” said owner Mary Tabor Tormey, who’s just as excited now as she was in July, 2003, when she opened Second Helpings. Thirds came along on Sept. 15, 2008, and together they offer customers some exceptional values. An accountant by trade, Mary always dreamed of having her own business. “It’s something I always wanted to do” she admits. And, operating in a busy location like Gooding Plaza has reaped dividends. “This is a great location,” she says. “There’s convenient parking here. I believe Gooding Avenue is the third most traveled street in Bristol, so that has really helped us,” she adds. “Just Ducky Children’s Consignment Shop is next to us,” Mary continues, “and now, we have three consignment stores in a row. We complement one another and have become a true shopping destination.” It’s probably easier to say what these well inventoried shops don’t have, but here’s a stab at the remarkable range of items featured. Second Helpings’ consignment inventory includes bed sets, cribs, child desks, couches, chairs and tables, linens, planters, pillows, paintings, table linens (fine and vintage), and toys. Also, china, dining room tables and sets, flatware, kitchen tables, place settings, sets of dishes, sterling, appliances, kitchen hutches, gadgets, utensils, glass- ware, serving dishes, garden elements, anything silver, pewter and copper, costume jewelry, cocktail tables, figurines, lamps, and pictures. One could easily set up a complete household with home furnishings and accessories from Second Helpings, all with plenty of life left in them. And it’s not unusual to find a cherished antique in the nooks and crannies of the shop. Thirds Clothing Consignment Shop and Retail Clothing Store is a furnishings and home goods consignment store located right next door to Second Helpings. Featured are men’s and women’s used clothing, accessories, jewelry, purses and shoes. “Very few shops carry men’s clothing,” says Mary. “We have a good selection of men’s suits, jackets, trousers, shirts and ties, as well as accessories,” she says. Popular among the many name brand women’s clothing items carried in Thirds are such favorites as Chico’s, Talbot’s, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor.
Inside Second Helpings, Corinne Tormey (left) makes a sale with happy customer Diana Folkes of Bristol.
You’ll also find a fine selection of Plus sizes. Designer purses and handbags are also in good supply here. You’ll see some of the more popular ones, like Coach and Brahmin. Many items are new, with their price tags still hanging on them. “We are the happy recipients of items that never get returned to the store,” she says, adding that there are a lot of lucky customers who are just the right size for these treasured items. A lot of regular customers come in often to check out the vintage and modern costume jewelry, too, as well as the vintage clothing. “Every day is like Christmas here,” says Mary, of the variety of items that come into the store on a daily basis. “You just never know what you’ll find,” she adds. There are so many items to choose from in both locations that it takes a fair amount of time to browse through to make absolutely sure you haven’t missed anything. “It’s expanded here,” says Mary. “We have a lot of people who are happy to buy second hand items.” In our tough economy, the consignment shop business has been a bright retail spot. “I couldn’t be more delighted with the way things have worked out here,” she noted. “I have a great staff that is more than willing to help people. They’re very courteous.” When you first walk into the store, customers are greeted with the soft sounds of tasteful music which seems to both energize and relax customers in their nev-
er-ending pursuit of a good bargain. I know the people who come into our shop like to hear the music,” says Mary.” “We have new items, old items, and those that are in-between,” she says. “And, we’re always making sure everything is clean in here.” All consigned items must be clean, in good repair and show no signs of wear to be included in the extensive inventory at both locations. We all like to save money and because of the nature of the business, “prices are always automatically going down,” says Mary. “There are always bargains to be had.” Customers for both shops come from all walks of life and many locations throughout the region but they share a common interest of finding something special at just the right price. Often the shoppers end up consigning items of their own. Both Second Helpings and Thirds are open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday and Monday, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.; and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “ I want people to know that we’re open 7 days a week so everyone has an opportunity to shop, regardless of their work schedules,” says a busy and happy Mary. As she has stressed in her stores’ slogan, “Imagine the possibilities.” Indeed at Second Helpings and Thirds, the possibilities are endless. And so it seems is the amazing inventory. Surprise yourself with a visit. Bet you can’t go just once.

Nonni’s Kitchen & Pasta Shop
W
hen Phil DeDucca opened up Nonni’s Italian Restaurant and Pasta Shop on Stafford Road in Tiverton four years ago, he named it for his Italian grandmother who was his inspiration. “We start with the best ingredients and a commitment to quality to bring you foods that you could expect to purchase and eat in the heart of the old country,” Phil says. “Whether you purchase some of our excellent pastas and sauces to prepare at home, or choose to dine with us, or carry out, you can be sure of one thing. Nonni would be proud of how we’re doing things,” says Phil, whose restaurant has earned a Rhode Island Monthly Best Award. Nonni’s is unique in that it is not only a pasta factory and retail store, but also a restaurant with a full kitchen, large dining room and a well-stocked bar with an excellent wine list. Authentic Italian meals are served hot off the stoves or out of the pizza ovens and served by a knowledgeable wait staff. Local favorites include their signature eggplant parmesan, the popular chicken parmesan and fabulous veal dishes, where the veal is very tender and “pounded to perfection,” according to Cheryl DeDucca, the restaurant manag-
er. “We’ve included some American food, such as buffalo wings and burgers, but we try our hardest so stay true to the traditional Italian aspect,” she says. Delicious desserts, cappuccinos and desert martinis are highlights. Meals are also available for takeout. Nonni’s is open seven days a week, 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday nights. Nonni’s Pasta Shop makes fresh pasta daily, using traditional, old-fashioned ingredients, like flour, eggs, water and salt. Each day these wholesome ingredients are used to create a variety of nutritious and healthy pastas, like spaghetti, fettucini, angel hair, linguine, pappardelle, shells, rotini, macaroni and more. Call ahead to make sure your favorite is being made before stopping by. Pasta is a great meal, especially if you’re in a hurry. Depending on the type of pasta you choose, it can be ready to eat in anywhere from 10 seconds to 2-1/2 minutes. Nonni’s knowledgeable staff can tell you how to cook the perfect pasta. And speaking of meals that are easy on your timeframe, Nonni’s also prepares fresh ravioli, gnocchi, lasagna and a variety of sauces every day for its dining room customers and for you to prepare at home for your

Center Ace Hardware
O
wners George and Susan Tamer, who opened the doors six years ago in the Barrington Shopping Center, have a real showcase location for those driving by or walking on County Road. They are joined by their daughter, Nicole, as well as an experienced sales team, in overseeing a versatile and well stocked hardware store that manages to always have just the thing you’re looking for. “I want people to know we’re truly more than a neighborhood hardware store… and that more is a big word,” says George. “We’re a place where people gather, catch up with one another and just stop by to see us,” he says. He tells of how very often people on their way home from work will swing by and walk the aisles, to decompress after a tough day at the office, or simply to see what’s new. “They don’t have to buy a thing,” says George. “We love to see them.”
People often comment on the lavish window displays that Center Ace Hardware changes with the seasons. “I don’t know that everyone knows this,” says George, “but our windows are available for local artists to showcase their crafts, as long as it’s something that fits into the community,” he says. “Interested artists should have enough of their work or crafts to fill the space, and be prepared to leave it on display for at least a month,” he adds. George and his team make a real effort to fit into the community too, offering their store as a location for fundraising events and activities for organizations. From high school car washes to Boy Scout bird house building projects. “Our doors are always open for worthy projects,” he says. So, swing by and see what’s in store at Center Ace Hardware one of these days.

Quality Paint and Wallpaper

uality Paint and Wallpaper has been a Barrington fixture since 1974 and has always been family owned and operated by the Szczepanek family, first in its Kent St. location, then in the Center and most recently on Maple Avenue. Today, sons of the original owners, Stan and Jeff own the shop, assisted by their sister, Marcia Trodson, and all are familiar faces to the many East Bay residents who frequent the store. Since its establishment 37 years ago, Quality Paint and Wallpaper has been an independent Benjamin Moore paint seller, offering a complete line of the manufacturer’s quality products for every interior and exterior home project, as well as custom paint and stain matching services. A popular computer program on the Benjamin Moore website is the Personal Color Viewer which enables you to see how a color will look on the interior or exterior of your home before you even pick up a paint brush. You can use images from a pictorial library, or import pictures of your own home. The shop carries a complete inventory of home improvement products, including Sikkens and Super Deck clear preservatives, Polycare hardwood floor products, Purdy and Wooster brushes, preparation and cleaning accessories and products, hardware and many other quality brand name items. Floor sanders are available for rent. Screen repair and window glazing are also available. Stan and Jeff are skilled home project experts and are happy to guide you through your jobs every step of the way. They
began their careers working for their Dad on the job sites. Marcia’s domain is the second floor, where she uses her considerable expertise guiding customers through the many wallpaper products carried by the store, as well as matching and complementary fabrics. As in the paint part of the store, customer service is the name of the game here and Marcia will spend the time needed to help customers accomplish the sometimes daunting task of finding the perfect paper for a room, often spending hours in the process. The store’s large and varied selection includes the favorite names in wall covering products, from paintables to silks, from traditional to contemporary, all available for loan. While the store no longer offers painting and wallpapering services, it does provide its customers with contractor names. This well established firm is the embodiment of an independent store and customers appreciate that. Unlike mega store chains where size and volume are poor substitutes for quality and service, at Quality Paint and Wallpaper, you’re welcomed personally by helpful experts who provide you with the right products to make your job easier and your results professional. Think of that the next time you plan to fight traffic and search for someone to help you. What you need is often just around the corner. Quality Paint and Wallpaper is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 to 3:00 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.

Are you a Yarnoholic? Come feed your addiction at Eva's Yarn Shop!
Eva’s Yarn Shop
E
va Tillett is a bit of a knitting addict as she freely admits. It’s no wonder that someone who started knitting at the age of six would one day open a successful yarn shop. Eva’s Yarn Shop, located in historic Fairhaven Village, has just celebrated its sixth anniversary and welcomed its 5000th customer to its in-store mailing list. The bright and cheery shop is a real drawing card for the area’s hard core knitters, offering a beautiful selection of pure wool, cashmere, hand-dyed and acrylic wools from here and many other countries. The array of yarns includes some novelty items which seem to be on the comeback. This includes yarns with interesting textures and fibers. A complete selection of needles, patterns for both beginners and advanced knitters and the area’s largest collection of unique buttons, keep the customers coming in. So does the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. And for those just learning to knit, Eva’s Wednesday Knit Night, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. is the perfect learning opportunity. Knitting classes for both women and men (yes, they do knit) are also offered for different skill levels. Check the website for more information. “I’ve never had anyone leave not knowing how to knit,” Eva says. Knitting is recommended as a relaxer and stress reliever she
says, and everyone can benefit from that. Inside the shop you’ll find a lot of knitted samples of popular items like cowls, fingerless gloves and shawls, and the patterns are free with the purchase of yarn. Beginning knitters, or those looking for quick projects for holiday gifts, will like the oneskein kits for hats, scarves and shawls. And there are many unique gift items for knitters on display as well, including designer needles, unusual stitch holders and counters, gift tags, wool soaps and more. Gift certificates are also available. Knitting is part of Eva’s heritage. As a young child, she learned various form of handwork from her grandmother whom she visited in Norway. Both her Norwegian mother and aunt have happily used their extensive knitting skills to create many of the lovely samples in the shop. This love of the craft is very much in evidence in the shop and in Eva’s relationship with customers. You’ll have a delightful visit, whatever your skill level. Browsers are always welcome. Eva’s Yarn Shop is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Most major credit cards are accepted.

T
he Seventh Annual Dighton Arts Festival will be held on Sunday, November 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Araujo Farms and Greenhouses, 1522 Williams Street, Dighton. The festival is sponsored by the Dighton Lions Club. Fine artists and artisans will exhibit, demonstrate their art, and offer their work for sale. Paintings, sculpture, textiles, jewelry, wood carvings, photography, and mosaics are among the many offerings expected at this year’s event. Several musical artists from the area will perform contemporary and traditional folk music throughout the day. The Music Committee has another great lineup of entertainment planned this year. Bob Mullen, co-leader of the festival for the Dighton Lions Club, said “We are delighted, in our seventh year, to have more exhibitors than ever and an exciting music program with well-known per-
formers. We believe this festival is special because it promotes an appreciation for the arts in the community and spotlights local artists. Children are an important part of our community so we have included activities that help to build an appreciation for the arts among children. And, as always, we are grateful to the Araujo family for opening their greenhouses and for their continuing support of the arts. We couldn’t do this without them.” Children’s art will be featured in the Emerging Artists Gallery where festival visitors can view artwork submitted by local school children. Sarah and Hannah Manuels will return again this year at the face-painting booth. Wine tasting will be a returning festival feature this year from 12:30 to 3:30. Information for Exhibitors can be requested by sending an e-mail to info@dightonart.org.

They left their jobs – Steve as an electrician and Tammy as a cytotechnologist – to pursue a life as farmers full time. They added acreage to the family holdings throughout Seekonk, Rehoboth and Swansea to expand the variety and quantity of produce grown, continuing a long tradition of producing the best tasting and highest quality vegetables in the community. They also conscripted family members to lend a hand at The Farmers Garden farm stand the family runs on Route 6. Anthony’s Seafood
I
t should come as no surprise that Southeastern New Englanders take their seafood seriously. With the proximity of a coastline that offers some of the best fishing, lobstering and clamming in New England, nobody takes that to heart more than the folks at Anthony’s Seafood on Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. All the local fresh fish sold at Anthony’s and served in the restaurant is shipped daily from the fishing fleet in New Bedford, with specialty fish like Mahi Mahi and grouper flown in fresh daily. Both a retail shop and restaurant, Anthony’s prides itself on delivering the freshest seafood in the business, a claim that its many customers endorse. The Anthony’s Seafood heritage dates back to 1956 when Anthony Bucolo opened his seafood company on a wharf in downtown Newport. Sons Stephen and Michael Bucolo, continue the tradition with the retail business and restaurant. The broth-
ers also operate a wholesale seafood business that supplies many of the finest restaurants in the area. With its classic shore hall ambience, Anthony’s Seafood Restaurant is a favorite with the locals and tourists alike. Prices are fair and food and selection are excellent. Customers aren’t the only ones who favor the spot. Yankee Magazine and several local publications have tipped their hats to this establishment, with a number of “Best” awards. Count on some great menu classics, including lobsters prepared as you like them, shore dinners, steamers, shrimp, cod, and salmon as well as burgers, chicken tenders, buffalo chicken and eggplant parmesan entrees. Step into the retail store for a full selection of fresh seafood and a complete line of prepared foods, including chowders, scallops wrapped in bacon, stuffed shrimp and more.

As part of the program, The Farmer’s Garden has a unique Green Rewards card, a preloaded debit card, redeemable for fresh produce during the season or other products, like plants, flowers or baked goods at The Farmer’s Garden or any of its locations. By prepurchasing your local produce you support area farmers like the Noons and help them finance the next growing season. Until the end of October, you can visit the Farmers Garden retail operation on Route 6, where you’ll find the freshest winter squashes and fall decorations, like mums and corn stalks, as well as locally produced baked goods, jams and brownies. Come and be part of a pumpkin carving contest from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 29. Patient care is carefully coordinated with patients and physicians in order to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient. With over 18 years of experience and an easy-going personality, Steve is able to effectively partner with individuals and physicians to ensure the patient’s treatment plan is appropriate and attainable over a specific period of time. This approach ensures that the treatment plan makes sense for both the patient and the injury or condition for which the patient is being treated. Personal care received by Steve is always focused and motivating. At Steve Mignacca Physical Therapy the goal of the clinic is to get patients feeling better as quickly as possible. Steve Mignacca is board certified in orthopedics and has practiced physical therapy in the east bay over the last 18 years cal Specialist from the American Physical Therapy Association. With approximately 2,300
licensed physical therapists in the state, only 18 have earned such certification. In the Journal of
Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy research has demonstrated that fewer visits are need-
ed at less cost when board certified therapists are involved. In today’s economy, patients need to consider out-of-pocket expenses and working with a therapist who has an effective, efficient approach is one way to do so. For those who have had treatment in this airy location, they will attest to the clinic’s spacious feel and the state of the art equipment. The clinic continues to add new equipment to help support various conditions treated within the facility including, but not limited to, high-level neurological, orthopedic, surgical, and nonsurgical injuries. The office is staffed with friendly administrative personnel who are there to support patients with insurance and scheduling questions. With flexible hours of operation, every effort is made to accommodate schedules for patients of all ages. Evening and weekend appointments, in addition to standard weekday appointments, are available. The clinic has street-level access enabling patients to easily enter with canes, crutches, and/or other walking aids. Most insurances are accepted and new patients are always welcomed. Liss Bargain Store
D
awn Liss has been in the clothing business for a long time, so when she says her goal is to bring the Liss Bargain Store customers name brand quality clothing at a bargain price, she means business. A little skeptical? Swing by the store at Bliss Corner one day and the prices will make you do a double take. They’re that good. This retail apple didn’t fall far from the tree, getting its genes so to speak from the former Liss Store established by Sam and Claire Liss in Fall River in 1926, and operating for 85 years. Some may remember Liss as the home of the $9.99 Levis and it’s a proud tradition that continues today at the Tiverton location, where you can still find Levis for men at $9.99. Of course, you’ll find lots of other merchandise, all equally compelling. Look for labels like L.L. Bean on barn coats and fleeces, Lands End on shorts and bathing suits, Woolwich on socks, the Varsity Girls collection, and useful, first quality items like yoga pants, ribbed turtlenecks, sweats, hoodies and tee shirts that Dawn has had made and imprinted with Westport, Little Compton and Tiverton school names. The spot is also an outlet for Champion clothing for men. The pricing is nothing short of terrific. “I wanted this store to be like the good old Liss Store days,” says

Dawn of her goal to maintain bargain prices. Certainly it’s a place to keep in mind for holiday shopping. “With the bad economy, people need a place to get great value for the dollar,” says Dawn. “I can give people better quality clothing at a lower price than Walmart’s,” she says. New merchandise, mainly purchased off price, comes in twice weekly. Her background as a manager of 24 retail shops throughout New England has come in very handy in developing a store with immediate appeal to her customers. The store traffic shows that locals have embraced both the quality of the merchandise and the pricing mix. “The men in the area go crazy for the long sleeved tee shirts,” she says happily. Dawn has a soft spot for the area where her grandparents farmed and where she now lives on a farm with dogs and horses, just 5 minutes down the road. It was one day, not too long ago, that she saw the 2100 square foot building for lease, rented it, put a chunk of money into it, and opened up the present Liss Bargain Store on December 11, 2010. One year in, the future looks rosy. Liss Bargain Store is open seven days a week, Mondays – Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Burns Power Tools
O
ne of the first things Zach Burns did when he took over as president of Burns Power Tools a number of years ago was to bring the 77 year old company into the 21st century with an awesome website that showcases and sells more than 37,000 tools and related items to customers throughout the country. “When you’re on line, you have to make sure you have the most competitive prices around,” he says. And this pricing philosophy has carried over into the retail store, as well. “Many people think that if you buy at one of the big box stores, you’re getting the best prices, but that isn’t so,” he says. Burns Power Tools is a member of several buying groups that enable them to purchase items at excellent prices and offer those savings to their customers. “It’s all about better pricing and better service, too,” says this young entrepreneur, who with his father, Jeff, run the operation today. “We can top anything a big box store can do,” he says. Quality tools, fair prices, good service and straight forward honesty have been prime motivations since founder John J. Burns, Zach’s greatgrandfather, started his saw shop back in 1934. Over the years, Burns Power Tools has become a major supplier specializing in industrial power tools, heavy duty machinery, full service sharpening, repairs and related accessories. The business has grown by catering to contractors and industry and providing value to these customers that the large discount houses cannot. Loyal customers know that if they buy a tool from Burns, they’ll have no worries if it breaks down. Burns will provide
help and advice on applications problems and offers pick-up and delivery. Long lasting friendships have developed from this Burns philosophy. The tools and supplies carried by Burns are considered the most efficient on the market according to Burns’ own testing and customer feedback. The company continually monitors competitors’ pricing and adjusts theirs to beat it. It is part of a “total packaging” approach to power tool marketing and includes selling, accessorizing, repairing and sharpening, as well as the best pricing. “Where will you take your big box purchase when it breaks down,” asks Zach. What was the foundation of Burns Power Tools’ business from day one is still at the forefront of its focus today. It takes a high degree of expertise to maintain the quality, finish and long-lasting nature of your specialized blades and few can claim the heritage Burns has in this highly technical field. The SuperSharp premium blade-sharpening process has been proven to last longer, cut better and extend your tool’s total service life. When you consider the tool investment you’ve made, it makes absolute sense to go with the best sharpening service available. A pickup and delivery service throughout the southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island saves you time and money on equipment sharpening and repair. In addition to inhouse repair service on tools, Burns service technicians are available for road repair jobs and maintenance of shop equipment.

Riley Kitchen & Bath Co.
H
ave you ever walked into a kitchen and admired the workable beauty of the design and incredible attention to detail? Have you noticed that you can tell right away whose kitchen this is by the high degree of personalization? Chances are it was designed by Riley Kitchen & Bath Co. More and more people are discovering that to have a great kitchen that represents your personality and serves your needs you have to have a great design. That means calling in the pros, like Mike Riley and his associate Lisa Riley. It really does make a difference in how your kitchen looks and works. Owner Mike Riley began his own design firm nine years ago, after more than twelve years of working for other firms. His well thought out kitchen layouts work well for the seasoned chef, as well as other members of the family. He is very involved in the kitchen design from start to finish, as if it were his own kitchen. Lisa shares the same values and involvement, and her twelve years of design experience and interior design education ensure a kitchen or bath that adds comfort, value and elegance to a home, while maintaining owner
individuality. Both designers highly recommend customers go visit other kitchen showrooms and designers before coming to Riley Kitchen & Bath. “What sets us apart? It's our attention to detail on every design. We strive for perfection on every project and often exceed our customer's expectations,” says Mike. The company carries cabinetry from nine manufacturers, ranging from stock to semi- custom on up to full custom cabinets, with prices ranging from budget to top-of-the-line. This diversity gives the designers a lot of flexibility when designing within a budget and Riley Kitchen & Bath is able to compete with the big box stores, while offering much better design services and customer service. All manufacturers are on display in the attractive Gooding Avenue showroom. Riley also carries a full range of countertop options, including Corian, granite, quartz and laminate. One company the designers especially like to work with is Showplace Wood Products, a manufacturer that has enabled Mike and Lisa to include custom touches in their designs. “It’s a semi-custom line with custom
capability,” says Mike, adding that Showplace is willing to add more custom features at manageable prices. Both Mike and Lisa are on the Showplace advisory board. For a limited time, Showplace Wood Products is offering a special customer promotion which adds to the value of this cabinet line. Customers can choose to get discounts on any premium wood species cabinets or elect to get cash back rebates. Superior computer technology allows customers to view in precise detail how their finished kitchen will look and a series of check lists from Mike and Lisa keep the project going smoothly with customers satisfied every step of the way. Riley does not do its own installations, preferring to refer its customers to a recommended list of contractors. “Over the years, we’ve built a list of quality contractors who meet our high standards and we have total faith in their ability,” adds Mike. “”We don’t mark up the installation and our customers are generally very surprised at how much they save on the overall job, because they are dealing directly with the contractor,” he says. Owner Mike Riley and his associate Lisa Riley.
We care. “Go everywhere else, then come to us. Let Our Experience Show you the Difference."

ust ask any mom in the area where’s the best place to go for children’s clothing and equipment, and the answer hands-down will be Just Ducky, a children’s consignment shop on Gooding Avenue in Bristol. They come in droves to find the most amazing clothes for their children and teens, too, from among the most sought after brands and designer names. Owner Dawn Grantham started Just Ducky fifteen years ago because she enjoyed buying fine clothes for her son and daughter and had no one to pass them down to. “Just Ducky just took off,” she says, of her shop’s amazing success. It is now in its third location, and beginning to strain those seams a bit, too. “You can shop at malls, by catalog, at boutiques, and even in Europe for lovely children’s clothing, but we’re the only kind of store where you can get it all in one location,” says Dawn. “We pride ourselves on
Shop Often, New Arrivals...
being the most competitive when it comes to pricing items,” she says, adding that keeping prices reasonable is a good service to local families and the community. “People are getting a lot smarter about shopping for children’s clothing, and even those who don’t need to shop in a consignment come here because of the good selection and better quality merchandise” she says. The shop also handles a lot of high-end children’s equipment, carriages, strollers, cribs and bedding at realistic prices. “It’s all becoming so pricey,” says Dawn. There’s also a special section for maternity clothing. “My customers can always get a good bargain at Just Ducky,” she adds. Who knew that the next big thing in children’s items would be diaper bags? Find the really cool ones at Just Ducky now, from makers like Kate Spade, Petunia Picklebottom and Vera Bradley.

Buyers will find a great selection of history, new age and religion, as well as gardening, cook books and self-improvement books. Fiction books include the most popular authors and titles, with a large selection of 2011 books coming in daily. Many out of print books are available on the shelves, as well. But don’t expect a dusty used book store. “We’re just not that kind of shop,” says Christine, likening Browser Books to a Barnes & Noble type of store, with books neatly placed shelves by category. Books are priced in an organized manner, with paperbacks selling for about half the publisher’s price. Hardcovers are generally in the $8 to $12 range. People interested in selling their books are encour-
aged to call for an appointment. “We’re very selective about what we take to include in our inventory,” says Christine. “We don’t deal in leftover yard sale books,” she says. A nice selection of children’s books includes educational books, award winners and classics. With a Master’s degree in Elementary Education, Christine has an eye for quality children’s books and maintains high standards in selecting them. “Our customers are avid readers,” says Christine, “not people searching for rare books. Regulars come in all the time, and you can tell a lot about them by the books they choose,” she says. Browser Books is a very busy place, with books coming and going every day. “While we’re located in Massachusetts, more than 70% of our customers come from Rhode Island,” she says.

Fabulous Foundations by Nancy, a beautiful boutique in North Dartmouth, carries an extensive line of bras with matching panties, bathing suits and bridal foundations from European manufacturers who offer a much greater size range than U.S. lingerie manufacturers. Whereas U.S. manufacturers go up to only a size DDD, the European makers have a range of A to O, with a band size of 28 to 48. Is it any wonder that 80 to 85% if American women are wearing the wrong bra size? “The right size bra in both band and cup size means better fit, lift and comfort,” says Nancy. Once a woman has the right bra size, clothes fit differently,
posture is better and she looks thinner. “One of my key phrases with customers is ‘Do you have an hour to look and feel 10 pounds lighter?,’” says Nancy. Nancy and her staff of five professional bra fitters (all sisters-in-law who get along fabulously) work on a one-to-one basis with each customer to measure and fit bras for many purposes, from sporty to dress-up. “Once we find the size, we have the customer try on many different bras to achieve the perfect look and fit,” she says. “Our customers are delighted to find that there is something better out there, that can make them feel and look terrific.” Shops like Fabulous Foundations by Nancy are not on every street corner, but it is certainly worth a trip to achieve the right support, lift and comfort. Some consider it a life-changing event.

wenty-two years ago, Maria Serrus was driving by the small building on Fall River Avenue when she saw a man put up a For Sale sign in the window. “Take that sign out of the window,” she said. And to the surprise of her husband, she bought the place on the spot. Cuties Gifts has been in the same location since that time, run by Maria and her son Barry Serrus, who joined her right out of college. And while the shop might have started with a very large doll collection inherited by Maria from her grandmother, it has expanded to include a huge selection of gift items, many exclusive to the shop. “We’re a full service gift store,” says son Barry, mentioning the many gift lines that include Willow Tree angels, Dept. 46, Tim Shore Disney Traditions, the Sable bead line and Analise Jewelry. Barry says there are many items made exclusively for the store and it
tends to feature items that other places simply don’t carry. “You can expect the unique,” he says. Cuties Gifts prides itself on its affordable pricing. Small shops like ours have lower overhead and don’t have to jack up the prices to cover expenses. “People are amazed at the amount of merchandise we carry and our good prices,” says Barry. He also says customer service a real plus in a small shop like Cuties. “I’m here every day and I can take the time to explain what the customer is buying. We also offer free gift wrap and layaway, “he says. You’ll still find the occasional doll and teddy bear at Cuties, but so much more. Visit them on Facebook or on their website, and wow yourself with a visit to this very popular gift emporium. Open Monday – Friday10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4:00 p.m.

Dental 1
D
ental 1, Dr. Gregg R. Melfi, DDS, is a private dental office that opened in Bristol after many years serving the Boston area. A Rhode Island native, Dr. Melfi began his first practice in Johnston, before moving it to the Boston area. Like many, he missed Rhode Island, its waters and its quality of life, and was happy to be able to sell his Milton, Massachusetts practice a year or so ago and move to Bristol. “I fell in love with Bristol at first sight,” he says. Dental 1 is a unique blend of family dental care tradition and high technology, that offers area patients a number of services not often seen in dental offices in the area. As the name implies, “Dental 1” symbolizes a “patients first approach” and the goal of the office is to bring new technologies to patients without adding to the cost of dental services. In fact, their use probably makes each dental visit more cost effective. “Affordable, accessible dental care for everyone, with the latest technology advances, is our aim,” says Dr. Melfi, of his Bell Tower Metacom Avenue practice. So what are these new technologies that might make a dental patient consider a visit to the new dentist in town? Let’s talk about single visit crowns. Let’s talk one 90-minute appointment. Using proprietary
Cerec 3D Bluecam technology, Dr. Melfi offers single visit crowns, implant crowns, veneers and onlay tooth colored restorations, with six micron accuracy. As a dentist with over six years of CEREC 3D experience and over 3500 restorations, Dr. Melfi uses the 3 D scan technology to image teeth directly in the mouth. With this new technology, teeth impressions aren’t needed, there are no temporary crowns, no second needles, no repeat appointments, no dental lab timeframes. Cerec images, correlates and copies the exact shape and contours of an existing tooth or crown, assuring a return to normal bite. The new e.max, ovenfired, all porcelain crown assures the strongest available crown material anywhere, four times harder than lab porcelain-metal crowns, giving you the durability of gold, without the unsightly appearance. This technological advance is covered by most dental insurances and costs no more than a crown, crafted in the lab and installed the old fashioned way. The time and convenience savings are considerable. With his years of hands-on experience in this method, Dr. Melfi serves as a clinical instructor to other New England dentists. Now, let’s talk about novacaine and other pain killing devices. As you might anticipate by now,
Dental 1’s Dr. Melfi isn’t dispensing the old, run of the mill novacaine that relies on a big steel syringe for its delivery system. The latest computer-controlled novacaine technology numbs only the area to be worked on instead of a whole side of the mouth. It is virtually painless in its administration. Fearful patients may also appreciate the fact that Dr. Melfi can administer nitrous oxide to totally relax a patient before a procedure. It is not generally available in the area. There is no additional cost for computer controlled novacaine technology and sedation services like nitrous oxide. It is all part of Dr. Melfi’s full service dentistry. In addition to Dental 1’s technological advances for patients, it offers other services, including laser dentistry, a spa room with chair massage, all digital x-ray with 94% less radiation, and a comprehensive Recare appointment with a dental hygienist every six months, to ensure that your teeth, mouth and jaw receive a thorough exam, a complete periodontal examination, as well as TMJ/Neuromuscular and restorative and magnified imaging to catch problems early. Dr. Melfi is a member of the highly respected LVI (Las Vegas Institute) which offers major advances in training for dentists
in the neuromuscular field. In these tough economic times, says Dr. Melfi, a lot of people don’t have dental insurance and others put off visiting the dentist because of the cost. “This just creates problems down the line,” he says. “Our most important job is to keep dental care affordable for everyone while maintaining our level of service,” he says. “Our technology goes a long way to keeping our services cost effective,” he adds.
Dr. Melfi is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry, DOCS Sedation, the Academy of Laser Dentistry, the Rhode Island Dental Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society and the Bristol Dental Society. Dental 1 offers 7:30 a.m., evening and Saturday appointments for your convenience.
Dr. Melfi's state-of-the-art equipment makes dentistry a pleasure and comfort for patients.

Columbus Credit Union
O
n August 11, 2010, Columbus Credit Union and its members celebrated 60 years as one of East Bay's savings institutions. From its humble beginning, the credit union has grown to serve a much wider community, a far cry from the original small gathering of Knights of Columbus members who originally created the credit union in the basement of a Warren church. Back in 1950, thirty-seven Knights of Columbus members attended the first annual meeting of the new Columbus Credit Union, held October 16, 1950, in the basement of St. Mary's Institute, now St. Mary of the Bay Church. Membership was originally limited to Knights of Columbus members and their families. Its purpose was "to promote thrift among members by giving them an opportunity to save money and obtain loans at reasonable rates.” The credit union's objective still holds true today. Back then, all transactions were handled on Friday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the basement of St. Mary's Institute. After operating at the Institute for a few months, the credit union outgrew its limited space and moved to the second floor of a building on Main Street in Warren and on September 6, 1954, it moved again, to the Warren Hotel Building. Columbus
Credit Union finally settled into its own building on May 15, 1958, when the membership voted to purchase the present site, the former Wilmarth property at 560 Main Street. As a not-for-profit organization, Columbus Credit Union's role is to provide services to its members. Columbus Credit Union is a fullservice financial institution where members are owners. When you open a share account with a $20 deposit, you are purchasing a share in the Credit Union, and become a voting member eligible to use its services. The share account works like stock, but there is no risk involved - you get as much back as you put in. If a member puts over $25 in a 'share' account, dividends - like interest on that money can be collected. That's why the credit union encourages people to make it $25 instead of $20. Membership at Columbus Credit Union is no longer limited to the Knights of Columbus members and is available to all regardless of residence or occupation. The prime difference between a bank and a credit union is "one member, one vote," whether you have one million or one dollar saved, you have one vote. Members are encouraged to attend the annual meeting, usually held in March.
Columbus Credit Union offers the full range of banking services – savings and checking accounts, mortgages and home equity loans, consumer and business loans, debit cards, Visa, certificates of deposit, and secure online banking. Additional services include surcharge-free ATMs and shared branching, which allows Columbus Credit Union transactions at participating credit unions worldwide. There is also a 24-hour automatic teller service. Having become fully established in the Warren and adjacent communities, further growth was on the horizon. On October 29, 2009, Columbus Credit Union took a giant expansion step by opening its second branch, located at 3 Crescent View Avenue in Riverside. The new branch is a high-tech, full-service facility, complete with drive-up windows, 24-hour ATM access, and a vault converted to a children's activity room for the convenience of parents as they conduct banking business. In its two years in operation, the facility has expanded the credit union’s membership base exponentially in the East Providence area. Perhaps because of its modest beginnings, involvement in the community has always been an important function at Columbus Credit Union. At both the Warren
and Riverside locations, it’s all about building relationships with members. There’s a friendly and welcoming small town feeling as members walk in the door and are greeted on a first name basis, which has contributed to the popularity and growth of the credit union. Columbus Credit Union has made a special point of being a part of both communities it now services, first as partners in the East Bay and East Providence Chambers of Commerce activities, and then with donations to Mt. Hope and East Providence
college scholarships, participating in the Heritage Festival in East Providence, supporting the Corliss Institute for the Deaf events supporting the Warren Walk About, Warren Holiday Festival, and Bristol 4th of July, as well as sponsoring the Providence Bruins. Its recent penny collection campaign recently netted a $3,500.00. donation to St. Jude’s. Columbus Credit Union hours are Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to Noon.

A
t the site of the former Stafford Grill on Stafford Road in Tiverton is a very interesting little restaurant that’s beginning to get a lot of positive attention from locals in the area. Vinny’s Kitchen, owned by Vinny and Ann Storti, has been up and running only a year and a half, but already it’s become the hot breakfast and lunch spot in the area. It’s open for dinner on Thursday and Friday nights too and attracting the dinner crowd. Though his restaurant is a fledgling in the area, owner/chef Vinny is more than a bit of a cooking legend, having started his 45-year restaurant career at the age of eleven at the Old Canteen in his birthplace, Federal Hill, where his brother was chef for 35 years. He has been chef and general manager at a number of country clubs here and in Florida, was chef at the Classic Restaurant in North Providence for many years and owned Storti’s Restaurant. He

Westport Market
R
abih Salibi took over the local Westport Market, an area fixture, in 2007, and since then has been making improvements. The neighborhood convenience store, with an emphasis on convenience, stocks just about everything you might need, a godsend in a land where a memory slip in the market could cause a menu change in the kitchen. Outside of the market, you’ll often find local produce as the season permits, and inside the small shop is filled to the rafters with grocery items, candy, cigarettes, wine, liquor and beer, soft drinks, milk, cleaning supplies and dry goods, as well as your favorite Massachusetts Lottery game. The favorable juxtaposition of fresh flowers and wine can often inspire a more festive evening. The market’s customers are all local people and 90% of them come from a 2-mile radius, according to Rabih. It has been in the same location for 32 years, and because it’s open seven days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., life is a lot easier for those in the surrounding area, who don’t have to travel miles to get that vital ingredient. Since purchasing the store, Rabih has made some major renovations that have allowed him to expand the items carried in the market. A new 14-door walk-in
cooler, installed in 2008, holds cheeses, soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as other items. Much to the delight of its loyal customers, who have often lamented having to back up shopping carts in the small aisles, even more improvements are on the agenda. Rabih is now working with the planning board to add an additional 4200 square feet of space which will more than double the size of the market. “I’m very excited about this addition, because the new market will maintain a country look in the design and construction and provide the space required to make it less congested,” he says. “We really need storage space and more display shelves,” he says of the new design, which will also include a small seating area for enjoying a cup of coffee while playing Keno or chatting with neighbors. The Westport Market is a strong supporter of fire, police and school activities, an important factor in a small area like Westport. A resident of Fall River, Rabih has been pleased to be an active small business owner in Westport and is happy to back sports and activities that enhance the community. Rabih also owns the Stateline Convenience Store and Country Kitchen in Tiverton, a popular stop for breakfast for Tiverton residents. He bought it in 2002.

MTTI (MotoRing Technical Training Institute)
M
TTI (MotoRing Technical Training Institute) is a bridge between employers with jobs to fill because of a skills shortage and the underemployed individual. It was founded in 1985 by Ward and Sharon Ring as a workforce development program in a small building in Greenville. Today, it occupies over 60,000 square foot buildings in Seekonk and East Providence and serves more than 300 individuals each year. Through quality technical education, MTTI provides the trainee, whether a newly graduated student or a seasoned worker seeking to develop a new career, with the skills, knowledge and competencies necessary to meet entry level needs of the labor market. It seeks ongoing input from employers and manufacturers into the development of curriculum to ensure their instruction reflects the current state of technology. Programs are offered in eight fields of interest: automotive services technicians, building and property trades technician, computer services technician and network installer, electronics communications technician, marine services technicians, medical assistant, medical/dental office management, and motorcycle/power equipment
technician. MTTI’s motto is “Education for Employment,” and that concept is the foundation of all the programs offered. To ensure that all graduates are in the most competitive position possible to enter a new career in one of these areas. The institute focuses on recreating the workplace for each program. Shops and labs are outfitted to be similar to the work environment found in a chosen industry. Through learning a combination of technical skills, proper use of tools and equipment and knowledge of how to access technical information, graduates have the potential for growth and continuing productivity to adapt to the changing needs of the workplace. Only experienced and dedicated instructors teach the programs. These talented professionals are passionate about their respective fields and have years of related work experience. Many have been managers, supervisors and business owners themselves and know what the industry expectations are. The teachers serve not only as instructors, but also as mentors and supervisors to provide students the best opportunity for success. Because employers require workers who demon-
strate proficiency in technical school, but also have excellent attendance, professionalism teamwork and dependability, teachers help develop good work habits and attitude. Curricula development is important at MTTI, so an Advisory Committee for each program helps design the curriculum to ensure that skills taught are relevant to today’s job market and that the skills and knowledge included relates only to your chosen program. Most programs have more than 50% to 60% of training time spent in hands-on activities. An important component of your education at MTTI is the support you will receive from the school’s Career Services. Both your instructor and the Career Services staff will help prepare you for an existing training related internship and offer workshops in resume writing and interview techniques that will help you present yourself in the most professional way. In addition to assisting in the school to job transition, the staff will provide you with job search skills and job placement assistance. MTTI is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) and re-accredited every five years most recently in 2010
At MTTI, programs are offered in eight fields of interest, such as building and property trades. and was awarded a “School of Distinction Award” awarded to only 1% of schools nationally. It is approved by the United States of Department of Education for Title IV Financial Aid programs. MTTI is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education. A satellite location is located in East Providence.
Prospective student are encouraged to come in for a tour of the MTTI facility. Call 508336-6611 for a convenient time. Information packets are also available on line. MTTI will be hosting an Open House on November 9, presenting an opportunity to learn more about the institute and meet the teachers and staff. For more information, call 508-336-6611 or visit the website www.mtti.edu.
