Today, East Carolina’s bold direction continues to define its region and legacy.

ECU’s service mission and continual commitment to excellence have made the university one of the fastest-growing institutions in the nation. The university boasts a student population of more than 27,000, including more than 21,000 undergraduate students, about 6,000 graduate and doctoral students, and more than 300 medical students. Almost 61 percent of students are females and 39 percent are males. More than 20 percent of students are minorities, and 12 percent are from out of state. The students’ potential, combined with the promise of expanding services such as the East Carolina Heart Institute and the School of Dental Medicine, help ECU make an extraordinary difference in the region and beyond.

ECU students set the pace for 21st-century research and innovation. They’ve helped engineering companies develop marketchanging products. They’ve helped top-notch researchers in their studies to find treatments for diseases. And they’ve made names for themselves in fields of research even before they graduate, such as the students who rediscovered a poisonous frog, last documented in 1924, earning them recognition from National Geographic.

East Carolina shapes tomorrow’s classrooms by preparing more teaching professionals for North Carolina schools than any other university.

The College of Education received the “Teacher Quality Partnership Grant” from the US Department of Education, providing up to $9.4 million over the next five years to improve teacher preparation.

ECU is North Carolina’s leader in distance education, offering more than 60 degrees and certificate programs in subjects such as business, education, health care, and technology.

In partnership with the US State Department and foreign governments, ECU’s innovative Global Classroom is using technology to connect students from around the world to exchange ideas and learn about cultural practices.

Two of the top distance-education programs in the nation are run by ECU’s colleges of nursing and education.

East Carolina is the largest educator of nurses in North Carolina.

ECU’s College of Business is one of only 120 programs worldwide that has been continuously accredited by the AACSB since 1967.

The college is also a long-standing member of the Graduate Management Admissions Council. In addition to rigorous instruction in core business disciplines, the college’s innovative curriculum instills leadership virtues in students from the moment they start college.

Construction management and technology systems faculty have created partnerships and, through technological and virtual capabilities, are teaching classes from ECU’s campus to students from countries such as the Netherlands, Brazil, and China.

College of Business graduates in the master of science in accounting program recently ranked 16th in the country on the CPA exam, second in North Carolina, and first among public universities in the state.

From a signet ring linked to the famed “Lost Colony” to an 18thcentury ship associated with Blackbeard the pirate, East Carolina historians, archeologists, and students are discovering and preserving important artifacts from our nation’s history.

The Honors College provides a living-learning community for ECU’s high-caliber students. Students earn renewable, four-year scholarships that allow them to participate in high-quality seminars, research, and service-learning activities. Honors students also have the opportunity to study abroad and network with national leaders.

Each year, nearly 10,000 East Carolina students contribute more than 132,000 hours of volunteer service to more than 187 health and human service agencies.

ECU offers opportunities for students to learn from current leaders from business and academic fields. The Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series connects students with current business and government leaders to discuss leadership and professional development. The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences Voyages of Discovery Lecture Series attracts some of the best and brightest minds of the academic world and explores a wide range of topics such as feminism, religion, and maritime history.

The ECU Leadership Challenge Institute is a five-week intensive program that helps students with demonstrated leadership experience to further develop their potential as leaders. This comprehensive program engages students through challenging activities, vibrant dialogue, and relevant readings.

The Chancellor’s Leadership Academy offers professional development for faculty and staff to improve their leadership abilities to benefit themselves, ECU, and their community.

Cadets from ECU’s Army ROTC have distinguished themselves with a winning record in contests such as the All American Brigade Ranger Contest, in which they prove their mettle at navigation, rifle marksmanship, and physical fitness against teams from other states. ECU cadets have also been invited to participate in the elite Sandhurst competition at West Point.

ECU selects up to 20 students from eastern North Carolina to receive the Williams Leadership Award. Recipients reside together in the historic Jarvis Hall and participate in a year-round leadership development program emphasizing ethics and values, decisionmaking, and leadership theory.

Established in 1983, the BB&T Center for Leadership Development has a proud history of providing support to ECU colleges and schools for innovative leadership initiatives. Focused primarily on faculty leadership, the center has benefitted from $1.85 million from BB&T since its inception.

Project HEART, a partnership between ECU’s College of Education and AmeriCorps, successfully mentors more than 6,000 at-risk high school students in math and science.

ECU was one of only 15 organizations in the nation selected to receive the 2010 Secretary of Defense Freedom Award. The award recognizes ECU’s support of all the men and women of our nation’s armed forces, including those enlisted members who are also faculty, staff, and students. ECU is only the second university to receive this national award.

ECU contributes more than $3 billion to the North Carolina economy and is one of the top employers in Pitt and surrounding counties.

ECU’s Center for Sustainable Tourism works with the tourism industry to develop more sustainable policies through efforts such as reducing water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, developing land-use strategies, and generating feedback from local people. The university offers the only master of science in sustainable tourism degree in the United States.

The North Carolina Agromedicine Institute is improving the safety of agricultural professionals—farmers, foresters, and many more. Agriculture is a vital part of the economy, and the safety of its workers is important to families and the industry. Headquartered at ECU, the institute is a partnership between the university, North Carolina State University, and North Carolina A&T University.

East Carolina University is leading important research on coastal conservation and management through the expertise and resources of the Institute for Coastal Science and Policy.

ECU is an active partner with business and the public sector. The Community Enhancement and Economic Transformation Initiative offers grants of up to $75,000 to help spur development and offer guidance for stimulating the local economy. The Bureau of Business Research—the research arm of the College of Business—provides economic data and forecasting services essential to expanding business activity in the region.

The Municipal Management and Innovation Initiative provides small towns with additional administrative capacity via teams of ECU faculty, staff, students, and other partners to ensure the provision of important public services and to help with the coordination of community and economic development projects.

ECU is home to the Innovation Design Lab, a first-in-class ideation facility for multi-disciplinary, multi-organizational innovation partnerships.

Between the 2007 and 2010 fiscal years, ECU was issued a total of 24 patents—11 U.S. patents and 13 international patents from Europe and countries including Australia, South Korea, Norway, Great Britain, the Philippines, China, Canada, Mexico, and Indonesia.

Health, Health Care , and Medical Innovation ECU will save lives, cure diseases, and positively transform the quality of health care for the region and state.

ECU researchers have developed life-changing technologies to improve people’s health. SpeechEasy is a small device worn in a person’s ear that dramatically reduces stuttering and produces near-fluency among those who suffer from the speech impediment.

The device was developed by ECU’s communication sciences and disorders department.

ECU’s Brody School of Medicine is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the nation that emphasize primary care. The school was recently ranked second in the nation by the American Academy of Family Physicians for productivity of family physicians.

ECU Physicians, the medical practice of the Brody School of Medicine, is the largest and most comprehensive medical practice in eastern North Carolina.

The new ECU Family Medicine Center and the Frances J. and Robert T. Monk Sr. Geriatric Center will enable the university to expand its services and leadership in these areas.

Bringing together a team of leading experts, the East Carolina Heart Institute provides patient care and professional education and conducts pioneering research. The institute provides research labs, outpatient and educational facilities, operating and interventional rooms, and patient beds to a region in need of advanced health care.

East Carolina has the only allied health sciences college in North Carolina, with more than 85 percent of its graduates practicing in North Carolina.

ECU doctors have earned national reputations for their expertise in bariatric research. ECU faculty developed the widely used procedure known as the Greenville Gastric Bypass, which reduces the size of a person’s stomach and re-routes food around part of the small intestine. A study found that 80 percent of type 2-diabetes patients who underwent the surgery reversed their diabetes. Researchers at the ECU Metabolic Institute are continuing to study this effect with the hopes of discovering a potential cure for diabetes.

ECU is known internationally for pioneering work in robotic surgery.

The first minimally invasive robotic-assisted mitral valve heart surgery in the United States was performed by ECU surgeons. ECU faculty train surgeons from around the world in these techniques.

The School of Dental Medicine will not only train a new generation of dentists and health professionals but also provide regular dental services in North Carolina.

East Carolina is recognized for having one of the most successful in vitro fertilization programs in the United States. The program was recently ranked first in North Carolina and fourth in the nation.

The ECU School of Dental Medicine is being built on an innovative program that will train a new generation of dentists and health professionals while providing regular dental services through university-run clinics located across North Carolina in areas where such services are not regularly available.

ECU provides model programs for the Wounded Warriors Battalion at Camp Lejeune. The College of Health and Human Performance is using an innovative combination of biofeedback techniques and gaming technology to help US Marines recover from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

The university showcases exhibits and art shows throughout the year— including the university’s Dwight M. Holland Ceramics Teaching Collection, one of the largest single collections of North Carolina pottery and contemporary ceramics. The Wellington B. Gray Gallery showcases award-winning work from students as well as masterpieces from nationally renowned artists.

The Pirates are a Conference-USA football powerhouse. The Pirates won the 2008 and 2009 conference championships, have beaten top-notch opponents such as Virginia Tech and West Virginia, and continue to draw national recognition for their talent on the field.

Each year, ECU gives tickets for a home football game to the men and women of the US Armed Forces—a small token of thanks to the people who protect the freedom of students to pursue an education and career of their choice.

The university is widely recognized for the high quality of its music and performing arts programs. The School of Music is home to the world-class Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival and the Billy Taylor Jazz Festival. More than 150 public musical performances, including sacred, classical, opera, jazz, and new music, are offered by the School of Music each year in campus theaters and recital halls.

The S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series has brought more than 350 outstanding performances to ECU since it started in 1962, including Yo-Yo Ma and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

A Division 1-A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), East Carolina offers 19 intercollegiate sports programs that are all affiliated with Conference USA. A sign of its growing popularity and influence in college sports, East Carolina has expanded Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium to accommodate an additional 7,000 people and boost its capacity to 50,000 fans. The expansion also includes a new, high-definition video scoreboard.
