Tips for visa interview preparation Dress professionally The first impression will be regarding your outfit, so be sure to wear business attire. A visa interview is a formal event, and you should treat it as such. Be honest, specific and brief Do not give vague answers, do not memorize a speech, and do not make overstatements about how wonderful the USA is and how you have always dreamed to see this country. Keep your answers to the officer’s questions short and specific. Name the school and location State exactly where you will study and for what career your studies in the USA prepare you. Try to explain in a few details why you chose the specific school and give information about where you will live.
Tips for the visa interview process Ties to your home country You must be able to show that you have reasons for returning to your home country that are stronger than those for remaining in the USA. Examples of “ties” to your home country can be: job, family, financial prospects, or investments. English If you are coming to the USA to study intensive English, be prepared to explain how English will be useful for you in your home country. Speak for yourself A negative impression is created if you are not prepared to speak on your own behalf. Know the program and how it fits your career plans If you are not able to explain the reasons for studying in the USA and show specific connection to your future plans once you return home, you may not succeed in convincing the consular officer that you are indeed planning to study, rather than to immigrate.
9
Additional documentation Your interview may be only two to five minutes long. Have your documents organized. It should be immediately clear to the consular officer what written documents you are presenting and what they signify. Employment Your main purpose in coming to the USA should be to study, NOT to work. Applicants from countries suffering from economic challenges or where many students have remained in the USA as immigrants will need to show strong evidence of financial support and ties to home country. Dependents (spouse and children) If your spouse is applying for an F-2 visa, be aware she or he cannot, under any circumstances, be employed in the USA. Be prepared to explain what your spouse intends to do with his or her time while in the USA. Volunteer work and attending school part time are permitted activities. If your spouse and children remain in your country, be prepared to explain how they will support themselves in your absence. If your family decides to join you later, it is helpful to have them apply at the same post where you applied for your visa. Maintain a positive attitude Due to the large number of applications they receive, all consular officers are under considerable pressure to conduct a quick interview. They must make a decision, for the most part, on the impressions they form during the first few minutes of the interview. What you say and the first impression you create are critical to your success.
10
Common questions asked at the visa interview • What have you been doing since you completed your last level of education? • How many universities did you apply to? • Which universities admitted you?
• Why do you want to study in the USA?
• Can you tell me some details about your chosen university? • What is your GPA percentage?
• Have you been to the U.S. before?
• What are your plans after graduation? • Did you receive any scholarships? • Who will pay for your studies?
• Do you have any relatives in the USA?
If you are denied a student visa • By law, the consular officer must tell you the reason for denial if you ask — so ask! • Try to get the reason you were denied in writing.
• Ask the officer for a list of documents he or she would suggest you bring to overcome the refusal. • In most cases, the denial will be based on failure to prove “compelling ties” to your home country. • A visa denial is not permanent and may be reconsidered if you show further convincing evidence. • We strongly suggest that you contact ECU International Admissions if you are denied a visa so that we can assist you in your second application to the U.S. consulate.
11
Secure your housing As an ECULA student, you have the option to live in campus housing or local residential housing. On-campus living On-campus housing offers the convenience of easy access to classes, libraries, study and recreation areas, and special events. Living on campus provides the ideal university experience. For more information, please visit www.ecu.edu/campusliving. Students living in campus housing are required to have an on-campus meal plan. These are very flexible and easy to use at a variety of dining options, such as two all-you-can-eat dining halls, Starbucks, Subway, Chick-fil-A, Au Bon Pain, and many more. Off-campus living A variety of off-campus housing options can be found in the Greenville area, but you may have to stay in a hotel for a day or two before finding something suitable. Please plan to arrive early to allow time to seek accommodation before the beginning of the semester. This process may take several days of active searching. Usually a security deposit of one month’s rent is required plus the first month’s rent at the time the contract is signed. Leases are normally one year in length. More information and a list of apartments can be found at www.ecu.edu/offcampus. For assistance in applying for housing, contact ECU International Admissions at international@ecu.edu.
