Bruderheim’s beauty in bloom

The Town of Bruderheim hosted the Communities in Bloom (CIB) judges on July 26 to compete on the national level with some of the best communities across Canada. The judges were taken to many different places in the town, and judged on several different aspects of the community including beautification, heritage, as well as the different ammenities that are available to resi-
dents. “It’s not just about flowers and trees, they look at everything,” explains CIB coordinator Sherry Cote. Another big thing that they look at is the amount of volunteerism in the community she adds. “Volunteerism plays a part in everything.” In the rural town of Bruderheim, there are between 186 - 200 volunteers, something that really amazed some of the judges. According to Mayor Karl Hauch, one of the
judges had mentioned that there was more volunteers and spirit than all of his community put together. One very specific focus for the CIB team was heritage, explained Hauch. “They were impressed on how we were trying to preserve the heritage in our community.” The judges were treated to a lunch at the Bruderheim Moravian Church where they were able to meet three continuous generations of volunteers, and able to see first hand how much work goes
into preserving heritage in the community. Cote says that it is extremely important to remember that almost all of their volunteers have other jobs as well, so much of the volunteer work that is done is done in the evenings when the volunteers have time, adding that even the mayor and council can be seen some evenings coming out and picking weeds out of the flower beds and doing manual labour to help keep the community looking great.
This is the front yard of resident Hannah Skousbal’s property. As well as judging the ammenities for the citizens, residential flower beds and decorations were also toured and judged during the day long excursion.

Lamont Public Library explores new options Jazmine Inkster Student reporter
Lamont Public Library is hoping to make some new additions into their program through the possibility of joining the Northern Lights Library System. Although the idea is in no way definite, Joanne Calder member of the library board, says that everyone so far is on board to look into the possibility. Membership will be a collaboration between the town and the library itself, and the Northern Lights Library System will be doing a presentation to the
Town of Lamont, Elk Island Public Schools, as well as the members of the Lamont Public Library board of directors later on in the fall. “In the end it’s the town’s decision,” explains Calder because of the financial costs associated with being part of this system. Even though there are many financial hurdles that will need to be dealt with, the membership would greatly benefit the town’s library users as it would make access of materials much easier though the system’s sharing plan. On their website, the system says “Northern Lights Library System believes that all citizens should have
equitable access to library services.” This meaning that no matter where the citizen lives, they should be able to access everything that a public library can offer. Whether this be materials, books, or resources that may be available at other libraries in the system, they would be much easier to obtain with the help of this system. “It might be a few years before it all gets underway,” adds Calder, but the library board is looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

With so much to see and do, there’s something for everyone at this year’s Ukrainian Day event!
The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), August 6, 2013- 3
Summer fun not over yet in Lamont County Many events still to come before the warm weather is gone KERRY ANDERSON It's hard to imagine the summer season winding down already, but we are well into August and soon the kids will all be back at school. Until then, locals have a few celebrations families can still look forward to and enjoy during traditionally our warmest month of the year. Bruderheim kicked off the summer season with an excellent Canada Day celebration complete with pancake breakfast, parade, and activities all day long. Lamont County held its Farmers Appreciation BBQ; Ukrainian Village had Pioneer, Vintage, and Park Days; and
Andrew held its annual successful Sportoff featuring ball, monster trucks and a demolition derby among other things. Bruderheim followed up Canada Day later in July with an encore called Smash and Bash which saw some 3,000 people attend the three day event. Then Lamont organizers successfully battled through rain and mud to put on the annual Summer Sizzler rodeo and community fair which was a weekend filled to capacity with events galore. Even with all that behind us, it is quite amazing what is still yet
to come. Chipman will be celebrating its 100th anniversary the same August 16 weekend as Mundare is hosting its always popular Agri Days. With both towns just down the road from each other, it should be easy to take part in each. The following weekend, Bruderheim will host the Alberta Chariot Chuckwagon Racing finals among its Heartland Ag. Days festivities; while on August 24 Andrew will be having the Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival.

Fatigue and driving don’t mix Driving back from an Eagles concert in Edmonton probably almost 20 years ago with a friend, I nodded-off for no more than a couple of seconds and re-awoke in time to jerk my truck back onto the highway from its certain path into the ditch. “Sorry, just missed a deer,” I lied to the passenger who awoke to the sudden violent motion of the vehicle realigning itself. This provoked a suspicious look of disbelief, but I didn’t want to alarm the groggy passenger to the fact that I may have been only a few feet away from possibly rolling the truck and killing us both. That incident happened within 15 minutes of arriving at our destination. For the previous half hour I had been yawning, squeezing my eyes shut, resting one eye at a time, rubbing them, and anything else I could think of to stay awake and make it home. After all we were just about there. I was reminded of this near-miss after receiving a media release from the RCMP which stated that impaired driving isn’t just the act of someone who has alcohol or drugs in their system when they slip behind a wheel. It is also a driver who is impaired by fatigue. The press release goes over symptoms of fatigue, but I think we all know when we are too tired to be behind the wheel. We just don’t think about the tiredness being a form of impaired. Personally, the first thing I do when I begin to feel fatigued on the road - and I drive a lot - is to pull over at the closest town and grab a coffee or 5 Hour Energy. Sometimes getting out of the vehicle mixed with a shot of caffeine will jolt me back to life. Some people get rejuvenated by drinking water, or rolling down a window, but this does little for me. I read one time that the most serious accidents caused by fatigue happen very close to the driver’s destination. I can attest to that. Being close to home makes me choose between delaying the trip and pulling over, or risking that I can make it those extra 15 km. Then I found out that pulling over and closing my eyes for even 10 minutes can make all the difference in the world. Trip delayed 10 minutes or dead? I decided to choose pulling over for 10 minutes of shut eye. Remember: Don’t sleep and drive.

Letter to the Editor Contacting the town office has not been of benefit to solving writers issues Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in response to the story done with Mayor Bill Skinner about getting answers from the town office. I find it entertaining that we, ourselves, have contacted the town office, have spoken with the public works department, and are still not getting any answers. To have it said that we should contact the town office instead of writing a letter, well it is something called freedom of speech. As for the many issues that the citizens of Lamont have been writing in about, it cannot be said that they are unknown. The boulevards not being taken

care of, the parks being in disarray, the sidewalks being a danger because they are sinking due to water going underneath them, and of course we all know about the pot hole craters throughout the town. I know for myself that I have not ever said that public works is not doing their jobs, however I do feel that the jobs they are given from their higher-ups may not be where the major concerns should be. For an example, how about all the properties that have been dug up because of water main issues, and are still not fixed. The one on Main Street is nearing a year now, and still no sign of it getting taken care of.
Michelle Pinon Editor
People call into the town office, and get no answers or get that it will be gotten too eventually. I understand that there is a frustration point for the town mayor and employees, and they don’t want people speaking negative about the way that this town is being up kept. However there seems to be a very large double standard playing a mix here. I know of people that have been fined for their yards and the upkeep of them, and we ourselves have now been threatened with getting an unsightly notification. Are the parks not unsightly, the roads, the boulevards and grassy areas that belong to the town, the sidewalks, the

light posts, the crooked lines running up main street; I would say that all is unsightly. Therefore the citizens that live here are frustrated, and some are done sitting back quietly waiting and hoping things get fixed and things change. So yes I understand frustration because we all have it, and just want to feel even like we are being heard when we put our complaints in…instead of being told that it’s not important or they don’t know when they will get to it, or that it’s not in the budget, or finally to be said that they don’t know the problem exists. Please. Sincerely, Tracy Harding and Robert Dallman

Communities in Bloom comes to Bruderheim CONT’D FROM PG 1
"We have an incredible public works staff that do a tremendous amount of work for our community," adds Cote. Many of the staff volunteer in the evenings as well, during times that they are not getting paid for the work that they do. "They do it
because they care." Cote added that one of the judges had commented on the fact that never before had they been to a community that even town council helped with the little things in keeping the community a beautiful one. "We have a hands on Mayor and Council," stated Cote.
Hauch however believes that much of the work that is being done should be credited to many of the CIB volunteers. "Her and the folks that volunteer with her do a fantastic job in our community," he adds. This is Bruderheim's first time competing in the national level explained Hauch. "A
couple of years ago we took top prize in the provincial level." So the town decided that it was time to try their hand at the national level. Unfortunately, the town will not know the results until this October. Hauch says that while the judges were there they were able to make a
number of suggestions to the town on ways to make the community a more viable one which includes tips on infrastructure. One thing Hauch said that has been put in has been a master plan for sewer and water for land that has been annexxed into the community, as well as the
ability to obtain grants for areas such as housing and transportation. "They look for collaborations with other communities," added Hauch. "We don't want to lose our great seniors that live in and volunteer in our community."
To all of our customers who have offered to distribute our paper we can’t thank you enough!
Everyone met before the tour began at the fire hall to get ready for a busy day of judging.
Judges, tour guides, and town mayor and staff all visited queens park for the beauty and ammenities aspect of the judging.

Continued growth proof positive Mundare still heading in the right direction Jazmine Inkster Student Reporter
The town of Mundare has gone through a number of changes over the years, such as their town beautification project, and also through a new position in the town that is being created to help the municipality of just over 855 people. The position that has been opened is for a C o m m u n i t y Development officer, who will be doing a number of jobs for the town including working with many different people such as the town administrator, local non profit and volunteer organizations, as well as those involved with human resources with anything they may need. In the beginning, the main role for the person who takes this position will be helping out with administration, and putting together policies to help everything run smoothly. “We realize that our volunteer pool is burning out,” says Mayor Mike Saric; “they need help.” With the help of the community development officer, many of these organizations

population from the census taken in 2006 was 715 people, and in 2011, the total was 855. A growth of approximately 20 per cent, and according to Saric, the numbers are still rising.
