Monifah

Under Monifah Ponton’s bright smile is a fierce determination to do something great.

For Ponton, who graduated from high school during one of our country’s most intense years (yes, 2020!), the definition of greatness has evolved over time shaping and reshaping her hopes and dreams.

In her own words…how Monifah is finding her MORE at EICC:

“I used to want to be a fashion designer or singer,” she said. “Then one day after a speaker came to my high school, it really hit me what I wanted to do. I wanted to help people.” “I’m not saying Beyoncé can’t save the world, but how many Beyoncés can we have?” she smiled. The way Ponton sees it, greatness comes in many forms and what the world really needs right now is people who can lift up and help the most vulnerable, like scientists, doctors, nurses, social workers and mental health providers. “Through my experience at Scott Community College and the GEAR UP program, I have been shown all of these options and opportunities. That exposure helped motivate me and I realized I could go to “With EICC, I have grown college. You receive an abundance of support, as a person. The support I’ve help and aid at Scott.”

That motivation and support is propelling her forward, preparing her to give what she has received to those who need it most. “I want to be that person people can talk to and help them reach their best potential.”

With the help of supportive MCC staff, she soon discovered with the college’s affordable tuition, financial aid, scholarships and seamless transfer, an Associate’s Degree and beyond was well within her reach.

Brock

Engineering Technology Student, Muscatine Community College

MORE FOR

When Brock Jeambey was considering what to do after high school, he only knew he wanted a hands-on career close to home. It wasn’t until an Engineering Tech instructor presented at his high school that he discovered all of the opportunities available in the field.

After receiving a scholarship that covered the cost of the college’s already affordable tuition, he could not be happier with his decision. He said the hands-on aspect of classes and getting to work with equipment in the labs has been the best part of his program so far.

“It just sounded like a really good degree and something I would enjoy doing,” Jeambey said. “It’s really high-demand everywhere. I know by choosing this degree and career pathway, I won’t go into thousands of dollars of debt for my education and I’m going to be setup for success when I graduate.”

“A lot of area companies need people with my degree; I’m excited to get a job, start working and begin the next chapter in my life.”

Breanna

Nursing Student, Clinton Community College Breanna Douglas’ college journey has been a bit of a roller coaster. She tried a couple of colleges after high school, before finding her home and community at Clinton Community College. “Clinton Community College has by far been the greatest,” she said. “The nursing instructors I’ve worked with have all been just amazing. They are very thorough with what they teach, and they care about their students and ensuring we understand the material.” In first grade, Douglas watched her mother pursue a career in nursing and seeing her do something she loved influenced her decision to follow in her footsteps.

“I absolutely love healthcare, I enjoy taking care of the elderly and just knowing I’m making a difference in people’s lives each day.”

“I could not imagine attending a different college at this point. I could not be happier with what the future has in store for me.”

Kevin

Liberal Arts Student, Scott Community College Like many high school students, when Kevin Garcia was weighing his college options he immediately considered Scott Community College (SCC). Not only because we’re the number one choice for local high school grads, but because he’d already earned 14 college credits through concurrent enrollment. “I realized I already had college credit through SCC, plus I’d heard really great things about the soccer coach,” he said. Garcia was interested in playing soccer beyond high school, whether through athletics or intramurals, and knew he could still be involved at SCC. It’s just one of several clubs and activities available to students. “Playing soccer has been really fun,” he smiled. “The team bonded right away.”

“When we started out, little did you know we’d become best friends.”

An online student, Garcia has enjoyed taking classes on his time and scheduling coursework around soccer. He’s been able to get the best of both worlds — the convenience of online classes with the community on-campus activities provide. “It’s really nice having that community.”
