Dear Friends: To add to the celebratory feel of this season announcement, the 2018-2019 season marks the POPS 40th anniversary year! We’ll kick it all off at the Sixth Annual POPS Ball on September 13. Tony DeSare will play “Rhapsody in Blue” as the doors open to a glamorous evening of dancing to the full orchestra. This season’s lineup includes our usual walk through the past 70 years of popular music. We’ve paid a lot of attention to Philadelphia this season — and its rich history of talent and music across a variety of genres. We’ve stepped up our guest artist roster — CAPA graduate Leslie Odom, Jr., the Tony and Grammy-Award winning original star of Hamilton, kicks off the celebrations in September with his own elegant interpretation of American music. Storm Large isn’t from Philly, but she takes the same journey that Leslie does, with a sultry, simmering take on a very different set list with Crazy Kind of Love. Mandy Gonzalez is back with the POPS for Christmas — fearless as ever and fresh from her own Hamilton triumph. In January, Terell Stafford and The Philly POPS BIG Band visit the giants of Philly jazz — with a little pre-show help from two top college jazz bands, Terell’s Temple University Jazz Band and Matt Gallagher’s Z Band from University of the Arts. Everybody wanted more of Stuart Chafetz’s power rock and roll and he’s here in February with POPS Rocks the ’80s, followed by Uptown Nights with Byron Stripling in March. David Charles Abell, a Germantown Friends alum and newly appointed Principal Guest Conductor, brings an original show in April — Cole Porter’s Broadway: Too Darn Hot. I’ll close the season in May with my original show American Bandstand: A Philadelphia Story. I’m sure you all remember that moment when POP history was written by the nationally-distributed dance show that spent its first decade at 45th and Market. See you at the POPS!

The 2018-2019 Season marks the 40th Anniversary of The Philly POPS. We’ll celebrate this amazing celebration in a number of ways throughout the year. First, we’ll take an opportunity during each program to play a tune or perform an arrangement of a popular piece that has a legacy tie-in to the POPS. Secondly, we’ll continue with our ongoing effort to showcase artists and music with Philly roots. And, we’ll ask each of our guest artists to honor our shared history with American popular music by performing songs with resonance to this year-long celebration of POP. Here are some moments that we know you’ll particularly look for:
LESLIE ODOM, JR. Leslie Odom, Jr. grew up in West Oak Lane and attended two School District of Philadelphia schools, Masterman and CAPA.
TERELL STAFFORD Terell Stafford is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies in the Boyer College of Music at Temple. Terell has worked with the POPS and the School District of Philadelphia for the past five years as the Director of the School District’s All-City Jazz Festival which is presented by the POPS.
POPS ROCKS THE ’80s Philadelphia had a vibrant local music scene during the ’80s, home to the Hooters, who co-wrote, arranged, and played on Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time”, Robert Hazard who wrote “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, the A’s, and Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers. The Hooters kicked off the internationally-televised Live Aid in 1985. 93.3 WMMR-FM was then home to Philly-native Mark Goodman, Music Director at the station and one of the first five MTV veejays.
DAVID CHARLES ABELL David Charles Abell was born in North Carolina and came to Philadelphia, his mother’s hometown, at the age of five. He attended Germantown Friends School for seven years. He now resides in London.
AMERICAN BANDSTAND By 1959, the program had a national audience of some twenty million fans and had long been a local fixture. The weekday afternoon Top 40 dance party showcased local artists like Chubby Checker and Bobby Rydell alongside national acts like Smokey Robinson and The Beach Boys.
Leslie Odom Jr. Celebrating the POPS 40th Anniversary
Michael Krajewski, conductor featuring Leslie Odom, Jr., vocalist Leslie Odom, Jr. rocketed to stardom with his Grammy and Tony-award winning portrayal of Aaron Burr in elegant interpretation of the classics of the American Songbook make him the perfect performer to kick off the POPS 40th Anniversary Celebration. He’s said that he wants to make the kind of music Nat King Cole would make today — and he’ll do that with us. The Philly POPS backs him up in a show that spans from “Autumn Leaves” to “Unforgettable” and “Mona Lisa” right on up to tunes from that Broadway show that made him famous. He pays homage to his Broadway debut in Rent with a POPS orchestracentric, all-strings version of “Without You”, also featuring his guitarist, Steven Walker.

She sold out the Kennedy Center with her debut as guest vocalist for the electric band Pink Martini and The New York Times called her “sensational” when she performed at Carnegie Hall in 2013. “I‘ve always liked the whole idea of the Rat Pack and Frank Sinatra, all those kinds of very cool atmospherics”, she has said. Storm’s Crazy Kind of Love set features tunes from “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” through “Somebody to Love” and “Forever Young”. Her sizzling interpretations of POPS classics form the perfect counterpoint to Leslie Odom, Jr.’s more mellow revue of American popular music.
