18 2018/2019 SEASON

THIS SEASON we present works that span the rich history of ballet- from one of the oldest ballets still performed to never-before-seen world premieres. Whether iconic or brand-new, all of these ballets have the power to move audiences, to excite and inspire them – to bring out the deep emotions that audiences have felt for over a century. In these pages, we present contemporary images that evoke the same emotions as the remarkable ballets we present this season. This bold new look speaks to modern culture, while still holding onto the timeless passion that allows ballet to speak to any age.

As we look ahead to a thrilling 2018/2019 Season, we could not be more excited to share the incredible slate of programs we have in store for you. From some of the most beloved classic ballets to new, modern works — including five world premieres — there is something that will surely captivate dance lovers of all ages. The Fall season kicks off in October with the company premiere of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s emotional Romeo & Juliet. We continue in November at the Merriam Theater with an exciting contemporary program: Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort and world premieres from award-winning choreographer and Pennsylvania Ballet company dancer Russell Ducker and Gallim Dance founder and artistic director Andrea Miller. December brings the holidays and George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. Whether it’s your first or thirty-first time seeing Pennsylvania Ballet’s production of the classic, watching the timeless story brought to life is always a delight. The Spring season begins in March at the Academy of Music with the premiere of my re-staging of Giselle, one of ballet’s oldest and most continually performed works. In April, we celebrate the work of famed Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky with four ballets set to his music: George Balanchine’s classics Apollo and Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Jerome Robbin’s The Cage (a company premiere) and a world premiere from our acclaimed Choreographer in Residence, Matthew Neenan. We close out the season in May with a thrilling trio of ballets: Christopher Wheeldon’s DGV: Danse à Grand Vitesse, new work by internationally renowned choreographer Jorma Elo and the company premiere of Jerome Robbins’ Glass Pieces. We can’t wait for you and your loved ones to join us for this exciting season!

ROMEO & JULIET With its emotional choreography and Prokofiev’s famous score, Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s masterful retelling of Shakespeare’s timeless love story is considered one of the 20th century’s greatest ballets. This moving tale of star-crossed lovers is sure to stay with you long after you leave the Academy of Music.

PETITE MORT BY JIŘÍ KYLIÁN WORLD PREMIERE BY RUSSELL DUCKER WORLD PREMIERE BY ANDREA MILLER Our November program shows where contemporary ballet has been, and where it is headed. Set to evocative selections from Mozart piano concertos, Jiří Kylián’s exquisite Petite Mort uses breathtaking choreography, fencing foils, and giant black dresses to explore the nature of partnership. Gallim Dance founder and artistic director Andrea Miller will use extreme physicality, empathy and intimacy to push the limits of ballet in her world premiere, and company member Russell Ducker will choreograph his first commission for Pennsylvania Ballet.

GI SE LLE GISELLE

There are many great stories of betrayal and heartbreak, but none as beautiful as Giselle. This season, we premiere Angel Corella’s restaging of the story of a young woman whose love and forgiveness triumph over vengeance and last even beyond death. Audiences will be haunted and moved by Giselle, her love for Albrecht, and the ghostly Wilis. SUPPORTED BY

APOLLO BY GEORGE BALANCHINE THE CAGE BY JEROME ROBBINS WORLD PREMIERE BY MATTHEW NEENAN STRAVINSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO BY GEORGE BALANCHINE

We celebrate famed Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky with four diverse and captivating ballets set to his music. George Balanchine’s first collaboration with Stravinsky, Apollo, tells the story of the young god of music, and his education from the three Muses. Stravinsky Violin Concerto highlights Balanchine’s ability to combine intricate duets with dynamic group dances. The program also includes the company premiere Jerome Robbins’ The Cage, which vividly portrays a nest of female creatures, and a world premiere by our acclaimed Choreographer in Residence, Matthew Neenan.

APRIL 4-7 MERRIAM THEATER

DGV BY CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON WORLD PREMIERE BY JORMA ELO GLASS PIECES by Jerome Robbins Our final program features a trio of high-energy ballets that create the perfect finale for the season. Returning to our stage, Christopher Wheeldon’s DGV: Danse à Grand Vitesse uses twenty-four dancers to convey the power and momentum of high-speed train travel. Also on the program, internationally renowned choreographer Jorma Elo will choreograph a world premiere for our amazing dancers, and the company premiere of Jerome Robbins’ Glass Pieces, which uses the pulsating music of Philip Glass to portray the dynamism of city life.
