2020 LOCKDOWN As it transpires, the first ever, digital only edition of Eastern Suburbs Life, may also be the last, so we have added a lengthy section, at the end, to capture how the lockdown unfolded in the municipalities of Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra. With a sigh of relief, our June/July Edition 19 will, once again, be in both Hard Copy and Digital format. This copy is therefore dedicated to those businesses that soldiered on during the bleakest of weeks, to keep the wheels turning and continue to serve their customers. A big thanks then, to our major contributors, in order of appearance. Chillbonbon Creatif, Novale Bathrooms, Luxury Chandeliers Sydney, Home Sweet Home Nursing, Edgecliff Hearing, Sakuhra La Dog Grooming, The Field at Easts Rugby, Edgecliff Automotive, Cooper Park Garage, Hair By Yolanda, BP Health & Wealth, Insight East Education, St Marks Darling Point, Woollahra Library, Sydney Yoga Collective, Snap Printing Bondi Junction, Tremayne West Insurance, Noel D’Souza’s Chemists, LF Construction, Realise Business, Doug Briscoe Cars and Tracey Chandler Buyers Agent. Without you, there would have been no paper and no opportunity to create this record of the dramatic unfolding of the world changing Coronavirus Pandemic. Who would have believed on January 1, in the year with perfect vision (20:20), that by the end of the financial year, the economy of Australia would have been decimated, by an invisible virus that would kill over 100 people and infect over 7,000? Not many, that’s for sure. But, in truth, Bill Gates had already warned us of this possi-

Ruth Kliman (Chillibonbon Creatif) 0415 474 215

bility in a TED talk given in March 2015, and because this is a digital paper, we can bring that talk to you right here - (Just click on the imageof Bill Gates to hear the talk) It’s a sobering thought that the human “fight or flight” response is geared for handling imminent problems, large or small, but not problems, somewhere in the future, even when they are massive. And so it was that my wife and I were at Circular Quay in March 2020, when the Ruby Princess first docked, talking to Tasmanians who were about to depart to New Zealand. There was some mention of Coronavirus (not yet COVID-19), but certainly no anticipation of what was to be unleashed just 10 days later. By March 18, we were hesitant to meet people, even people we knew well, for a cup of coffee, and by March 23 all pubs and clubs were in full lockdown and would not open until mid May 2020, and even then, with many limitations. The intervening period saw a rapidly escalating lockdown, with new restrictions weekly, the close down of many nonessential businesses, and instructions to self isolate with signs everywhere saying “Stay At Home”. This then, is the backdrop to Edition 18 of Eastern Suburbs Life. A DIGITAL ONLINE version supported by essential businesses that continued to trade, and those agile enough to reinvent themselves to meet the constantly changing regulations. At the outset we were warned that this “new economy” could last for 6 months, but fortunately, the intense period was nearer six weeks and the days of low traffic, empty streets, closed beeches and shut down community venues slowly eased. Hopefully never to return.

Nevertheless, we continue to self isolate, tap forearms instead of shake hands, carry sanitiser and wipes, feel guilty if we sneeze and celebrate that we can now, meet with increasingly larger numbers of our friends and family. We were spared the numbers killed by Spanish Flu, the lockdown came and went quickly, our health workers and community bodies served us magnificently. It was real, but all happened so fast it seems like a dream, one that will fade as we awake. In it we held our families closer, saw the night stars more clearly, laughed at COVID-19 cartoons, valued our friends and neighbours more, trod more lightly on the earth, saw that nature was fine without us, that we are the guests and nature is not the intruder. It was a time to take stock, to savour and remember. To help us do that we have used the last section of the paper to record what happened in images from around the world, and in our little corner.

CLOSED FORESHORE March 21

In response to new measures introduced by the State Government that limit the number of people on any beach to 500. Woollahra Council closed beaches and harbour pools • Murray Rose Pool / Redleaf Beach • Parsley Bay Beach • Camp Cove Beach • Watsons Bay Baths Appropriate social distancing (1.5m between people) and to reduce the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19).

March 31 Rose Bay waterfront closed

Double Bay Beach is closed

Woollahra Council playgrounds, fitness stations, basketball courts, beaches and harbourside pools were closed until further notice. People were only allowed out for personal exercise in their neighbourhood park, by themselves or with other person, and social distancing of at least 1.5 metres away from everyone and don’t gather with others.

April 24

Despite recent decisions by Randwick and Waverley Councils to reopen their local beaches for exercise only, beaches and swimming locations in the Woollahra local area remained closed. This is because Woollahra’s harbourside swimming locations are much smaller than at neighbouring beaches and access at many points is much narrower, making social distancing very difficult to achieve. The Woollahra local area also had one of the largest clusters of COVID-19 cases in Australia.

May 6

New ‘Swim & Go’ measures are introduced at Woollahra beaches and harbour pools that will provide a safe way to exercise while maintaining social distancing.

Rose Bay waterfront closed and then opened again for exercise only

Beaches include: Camp Cove Beach, Double Bay Beach, Gibsons Beach, Kutti Beach, Lady Martin’s Beach, Parsley Bay Beach/Reserve, Seven Shillings Beach, Watsons Bay Beach, Rose Bay Beach (Rose Bay Park Bellamy Beach). Access to the water and sand is permitted for the sole purpose of exercise. Sunbathing or resting on the beach before or after swimming or exercise is not allowed.

May 15

Playgrounds and fitness stations reopen. Outdoor gatherings are limited to groups of 10 (including children). Please maintain good social distancing - 1.5m apart. Practice good personal hygiene (BYO hand sanitiser and towel for workouts). Stay at home if you're unwell. The equipment will be cleaned regularly, but we also ask you to be responsible for your personal hygiene and health and to be considerate of others. Basketball courts, parks and reserves open to the public for exercise.

Care with skill

plus kindness

As our community ages, people are seeking safe alternatives to ensure loved ones are treated with dignity, as well as, skill in a caring environment.

Cue the services of Home Sweet Home Nursing. Committed to ensuring people can stay in the comfort of their own home as long as possible, HSHN has two people at the helm that go above and beyond to maintain high standards of medical assistance. Their quality of nursing experience and expertise offers a unique service which makes a real difference. Between them, Marella Stigler and Karen Kelly have over 60 years’ experience as registered nurses. Their combined expertise covers public and private residential care, community care as well as private home nursing and they maintain an enthusiastic focus on individual care. Marella has personal experience in this area – an experience which inspired the creation of HSHN. “Instead of a hospital atmosphere – which can be noisy and you can’t have family coming in and out, I brought my dad home for six weeks before he died; he had family and his animals around him.” This ensured his peaceful passing within a caring, loving environment. It’s this family atmosphere that is HSHN’s point of difference.

Why did they start this service? “We believe in really caring about the person we’re looking after,” Marella emphasises. The pair knows what patients and clients want – and need. This extends to their team of quality carers, numbering 30 and growing with an expanding clientele. “We’re very strict about who works for us: they have to be kind and like what they’re doing.” An obvious advantage of Home Sweet Home Nursing is personal service available around the clock: “Not many agencies can say they have a clinical nurse specialist running their business or available 24/7 – because we care,” enthuses Marella, who is a specialist in aged care, dementia and palliative care as well as being a clinical educator. “I go with staff and teach them on the job, and I’m on the phone 24 hours a day to support them.” The extensive services offered by HSHN cover care in the areas of daily visits, respite, hospice and palliative, dementia, 24-hour (live-in), post-hospital as well as leisure and lifestyle and nursing home support. Such good care often requires nursing supervision to ensure pain relief and comfort. “I’m passionate about what I do and want to keep people at home as long as possible. Everyone loves home!’” Marella says. As Home Sweet Home Nursing’s motto emphasises: “Because You Can’t Always Be There But We Can.”

COVID 19: A TIME TO LISTEN TO THE EXPERTS This is a time for us to have a keen ear and listen to the experts for advice and guidance.

We follow Live News broadcasts to listen and make sense of the directions given by our Health Experts. It’s a time to discuss the changes to our lives with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues - as this helps to process the messages and relieve the stress of change. Like the old adage “a problem shared is a problem halved”. But what if you have a hearing problem? Spare a thought to those among us who have difficulty hearing spoken messages and may find the television hard to hear and the telephone a source of great frustration due to lack of clarity. Social isolation is a well-documented unwelcomed feature of hearing loss, as it makes conversing with others difficult. People with hearing loss can socially withdraw and not initiate conversation, as they have been embarrassed or frustrated by previous efforts. What can you do? If you know someone has a hearing loss, then be patient when talking to them. The best tactic is to slow your rate of speech down and still speak naturally. This gives you time to better articulate, and the listener time to follow the conversation even though some parts of your words are not 100% clear. This is especially important if you’re using a mask that muffles speech and does not

allow lip-reading. Don’t shout as this distorts speech. And never say “oh, never mind” if they ask for you to repeat something, as this is very disheartening and dismissive. Instead try repeating or paraphrasing your message. This is a time for greater patience and tolerance for our family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. And this will always be appreciated when conversing with someone with a significant hearing loss. If you, or someone you know, has a hearing loss and needs assistance, then contact EDGECLIFF HEARING. We understand hearing problems and give expert advice. We want to reassure you that we are taking COVID-19 very seriously. • Appointments are spaced to allow extra hygiene measures. • We can arrange MAILOUT of batteries and other hearing device consumables.

• We regularly disinfect door handles, chairs and shared surfaces at the start of the day, throughout the day and at the close of clinic. • The waiting room is arranged to create a greater distance between patients. • Use of face masks. • A drop-off box for hearing aids that need repair. • Hand sanitisers are available in the Edgecliff Centre Lobby and at Edgecliff Hearing waiting room.

Emily, owner of Sakura La Dog Grooming runs two salons in Sydney, one in Newtown, since 2008, and one, recently opened in Edgecliff on New South Head Rd, opposite Edgecliff train station.

To top it all, Emily says that they also clip the dog’s nails not just once or twice, but three times.

Emily’s passion for dog grooming goes back to her childhood when she took her dog to be groomed. She was so taken with the results, that she decided to run her own dog grooming business.

Another unique bonus is at Sakura will dress your dog with complimentary seasonal bows, ties, ribbons, and bandanas. If that’s not tempting, I don’t know what is. They always look spectacular and bring a smile t o every dog owner’s face.

Her salon in Newtown, was established in 2008 has proven to be extremely popular with locals who wanted their dogs groomed in the Asian fusion style.

During this coronavirus pandemic, Emily assures us that the team at Sakura La Dog Grooming, wash and sanitise their hands before and after grooming. They also wipe down of all high touch point areas and metal surfaces every 30 mins.

Other customers would travel to Newtown from the Eastern Suburbs just to get their dogs groomed in Emily’s unique dog grooming style. They encouraged Emily to open another salon in the Eastern Suburbs, and so, in 2020, Sakura La Dog Grooming was opened in Edgecliff. The salon employs a team of professionally trained dog groomers from Japan and South Korea, with experience ranging between 8 to 12 years. They are highly trained and sort after professionals.

A CAR LIKE ALICE: CITROЁN 2CV

Alice is a bit of an eye catcher for sure, it is hard to miss her on the street. It is certainly hard to miss her when she is in the workshop.

Alice has exceptional provenance beginning with the TPV, “Tres Petite Voiture” meaning very small car created in 1936, which after many prototypes became Alice – the 2CV and disappeared from sight for many years.

Yellow was the colour in 1975. When Alice is in the workshop, people look at her. It is immaculate and worth looking at. Joshua and his team at Edgecliff Automotive watch over Alice and keep her well. It is a delightful, beautifully cared for car.

In 1934 Michelin, who owned Citroën, had a market survey done. Citroën used the results to prepare a design for a “low priced, rugged “umbrella on four wheels.” The task of the “rugged umbrella’ was to transport 4 people and 50kg of farm goods to market at 50km/hr and cross muddy, unpaved roads and fields. Part of the requirement was that people must be able to drive eggs across a freshly ploughed field without breaking the eggs. The brief for the design & production team was to build it secretly.

It is a classic car in its own class and once again, in this classic story we recognise the names. Alice was almost lost in wartime, only Boulanger’s bravery and foresight saved her. We also see that car racing plays a big part in the classic demographic. Alice is a purpose built intelligent car that looks like a large matchbox car. It has everything about it that makes it enjoyable. It is well loved by its owners.

PEG THATCHER

Pierre Boulanger gave the project to Andre Lefebvre. By the start of 1938, 20 TPV prototypes had been built and by 1990, 9 billion had been sold. Here’s the “backstory” of Alice.

OUR COVID-19 POLICY

Edgecliff Automotive is an essential service and is OPEN FOR BUSINESS. Mon-Fri. f you have been delaying having work done on your car, bring it in now, we have more capacity than usual. Check your service and registration.

Interesting to discover the background of the three people who built the TPV: Pierre Boulanger (French), Flaminio Bertoni (Italian) and Andre Lefebvre (French). Pierre originally studied fine arts, Flaminio was a sculptor, as well as, an engineer and Andre was an aviation engineer, a race car driver and engineer and his speciality was chassis design, with a strong interest in the contact between the tyres and the road surface. Boulanger was the president of Citroën and managed the Michelin Company. When the Germans occupied France he refused to communicate with German authorities except through an intermediary. Citroën produced trucks for the Wehrmacht – but in a deliberate “go slow” manner. Going slow was not enough resistance, so the notch on the dip stick was deliberately put in the wrong place. The result was engine seizures. The Gestapo put his name on a list of ‘Most important enemies of the Reich.” So the TPV was developed in secret to keep it out of the hands of the invaders. Boulanger would not allow his new dream to go the way of the VW Beetle. By 1939, 250 cars had been produced in secret; the TPV was ready to be shown at the 1939 Paris Motor Show, and had been renamed the 2CV. To change the TPV into the 2CV required 47 experimental Protypes. It was always low cost and low maintenance; that was a given. it had an aircooled engine originally delivering 9HP. It had low fuel consumption, extreme longtravel suspension (used on dune buggies to soften the effects of rough off-road conditions). It came with a canvas sunroof the width of the car that rolled back to become a sun-roof. The gap in the roof also allowed for odd sized loads that may be longer than the car itself, it also enabled the later development of a van type of 2CV. The early ones had one headlight which was all that was required in French Automobile Law.

she has an extra tail light, rectangular headlights, two individual seats instead of just one bench seat, and Alice has a singlespoke steering wheel and ash trays! Alice came into her own during the oil crisis, and became a youth lifestyle statement.

They used aluminium and magnesium parts, had a water-cooled flat twin engines with front-wheel drive. The seats were hammocks hung on wires from the roof. The suspension system looked like a child’s jungle gym – a series of arms connected to torsion bars under the rear seat: a bar for the front axle, one for the rear axle, an intermediate bar for each side and an overload bar on each side to carry the weight of the original brief of 50kgs of produce. The front axle was connected to its own torsion bar by cable. From the beginning, the TPV had the new Michelin radial tyre. Boulanger managed Michelin and put the newly developed radials on the Citroën prototypes. The car ran about 95 miles to the gallon. It was a very light car with tightly reduced target weights. Boulanger even created a department especially to weigh each component and if necessary redesign it to lose weight without jeopardising functionality. Finally, it was done and the 2CV was ready for the Paris show – which was cancelled when WWII began. Boulanger wanted the 250 pre-production cars to be hidden immediately so the

German’s would not see them. He was adamant that this car would not be used by the enemy. Some were buried in secret, one was disguised as a utility, some were destroyed. It was thought for a long time that they had all disappeared, but it turned out that none of them were lost.

• We may be able to collect and deliver it back to you.

In fact, 3x4-door prototypes were found in an attic in the Citroën testing factory, hidden by workers without Boulanger’s permission. They felt there was a weight of history here that should not be lost.

• We make sure your car is wiped down inside and out with antibacterial wipes, when it comes in, and before it leaves the premises.

It appears that the German army did find one and sent it off to Ferdinand Porsche who did not see it’s uses and functionality and Boulanger refused to talk to him. Porsche said it was a soapbox jalopy, and was not interested in it. It’s unlikely there would ever have been a bright yellow Alice if he had been able to really “see” what he was looking at. Finally, when wartime air had cleared, the 47 prototypes became the 2CV and went into production called the “deux Chevauxvapeur” literally “two steam horse, two tax horsepower. (The taxable horsepower was a system to tax cars in France in those days.) It went to the Paris Car Show and finally the car for 4 people and 50kgs of luggage met the public. Ultimately Citroën produced 9 billion 2CVs with a number of models. It also kept changing through the years. Autocar wrote in 1953 “the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, makes it undoubtedly the most original since the Ford Model T.” It was called “a car like no other.” Setright in his wonderful pompous and esoteric style said of the 2CV “the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car; it’s a car of remorseless rationality.’ An American comic asked "did it come with a can opener"? Alice is much more stylish than any of the prototypes. Alice was given three side windows, it runs on unleaded fuel (of course),

• When your car comes in for service it will come back to you washed and vacuumed and wiped down. • We are conscious of maintaining the social distance policy.

• Technicians constantly are washing their hands with sanitising hand wash for 20+ seconds. Our technicians do not usually get inside your car without washing their hands, and right now there is extra care being taken. • We are being more self conscious and responsible for the duration of this current life style situation.

HAIR BY YOLANDA MORE THAN CUT & COLOUR Hair by Yolanda, has been in Double Bay, since 2013, and before that she was with a larger salon in Woollahra for 11 years. The salon, is a boutique-style, one-woman business. Most of her clients have been coming to her for years. "I have seen them marry and have children. Now they’re telling their daughters, if you’re going to get your hair coloured for the first time, go to Yolanda!" It is not just Yolanda’s cutting and colouring skills that draw clients to her salon. You see, Yolanda is more than just a hairdresser to them. She is a trusted friend. "When you’re a hairdresser you’re also a counsellor and sounding board,’ Yolanda says. “I try not to give advice, but sometimes it’s impossible not to. But what is said in the salon, stays in the salon!" The salon has two styling chairs plus a reclining chair for shampoos. The shampoo chair also gives you a back massage. "Because of the salon’s small size, there are never more than two clients in at the one time," says Yolanda, who studied hairdressing at the London College of Fashion, and worked in Knightsbridge.

Yolanda Austin is a Londontrained hair stylist and colour expert with a small salon tucked away in Double Bay’s Elbon Arcade.

YOGA: How to boost your respiratory immunity 4. SUPPORTED FISH POSE

A great pose any time you want to open up the shoulders and chest, this pose also does wonders for congestion in the lungs and sinuses. Proper alignment is essential in this pose, so ensure you have blocks or pillows to support your shoulders, neck and head to get the most out of this healing pose.

5. BRIDGE POSE

BRIGITTA PLOSZ, YOGA INSTRUCTOR, WELLNESS SPECIALIST

1. LEGS UP THE WALL

This pose is a great way to ground the nervous system and manage stress, which, when experienced regularly, is a major contributor to illness. Inversions also help lymph fluid move through the body, which fight infection.

2. SEATED SPINAL TWIST

Seated spinal twists alternately compress and stretch the torso, increasing circulation to the stomach, kidneys, intestines which stimulates digestion. Digestion, and general gut health are essential for a functioning immune system.

Another excellent chest-opener, this pose opens up the thymus, an organ located in the chest responsible for the growth of T-cells, a type of white blood cell essential for supporting the immune system and fighting infection.

6. BIG TOE POSE

A great way to stretch the hamstrings, this pose also has the potential to decrease stress and anxiety and stimulate the digestive system. This pose can also help relieve the symptoms of headaches.

7. SAVASANA

Though this pose is usually done at the end of a yoga flow, it’s a great posture to do any time you’re suffering from a headache, exhaustion or sleeplessness, all of which are common with colds and flu.

3. DOWNWARD DOG

Downward facing dog is a great way to drain the sinuses, relieving any pressure caused by colds or sinus infections. Downward dog also moves white blood cells throughout your body that help prevent infection.

STATE-RANKED TUTORING IN ROSE BAY

EASTERN SUBURBS

ONLINE Ed 18, Winter 2020

WHAT'S ON ST MARKS, DARLING POINT

SUPPORTING ROUGH EDGES Located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Insight East Education is an all-encompassing tutoring facility whose founders have 20 years in combined experience of private tutoring and teaching, catering for students from K-12. Most of the students attend schools such as Cranbrook, Scots, Ascham, SCEGGS, Rose Bay Secondary, Sydney Grammar, Emanuel and Reddam. They also offers online sessions, so students come from all over Sydney and country areas within NSW. Tutors are available 7 days a week and at any time of day. Predominantly, most of the lessons occur on afternoons after school. and also over the weekend. What really sets Insight East Education apart from other tutoring companies is their tutors. All the tutors are past students of one of the major schools in the eastern suburbs area and are only one to three years out of high school themselves.

This means that they can relate to the students they are teaching on a more personable level as they call upon their recent memories and experiences of school to help guide the student. This creates a great connection between the tutor and pupil.

The St Mark’s Anglican Church Darling Point community has sought to help care for our neighbours in practical ways during COVID-19. One way has been by providing practical food and financial support to Rough Edges, the support group for the homeless located at St John’s Darlinghurst.

St Mark’s has initiated a cash drive for this worthy cause, with a target of $10,000. So far $6,500 has been raised. We would love for members of our local community to join with us in supporting Rough Edges. Donate here: https://makingadifference.gofundraise. com.au/page/StMarksDP-3777111 FUND RAISER ENDS ON JUNE 15.

On top of this, having just completed the HSC themselves, the tutors are familiar with the syllabus, what is expected in exams and have up-to-date and current notes which they are always more than happy to share with their students. Insight East Education combine wa holistic approach to education with expertise, resources and passion of recent successful graduates, state-ranked Head-Tutors, and Senior HSC markers. Tutors are currently available for home visits (temperature checks are made beforehand). Lesson are ONLINE, via ZOOM.

April 22 "Swim & Go" and "Surf & Go" introduced at Bondi Beach

Waverley Council announces ‘Swim & Go’ and ‘Surf & Go’ measures at Bondi and Bronte beaches. The measures provided a safe way for surfers and swimmers to exercise safely in the water, with a strong emphasis on social distancing.

May 1

Given the responsible conduct of swimmers and surf craft, water access was available for periods over the weekend.

Waverley’s beaches have remained closed as per the Public Health Orders current May 14, and access to the water for swimming and surfing still follow the ‘Swim & Go’ and ‘Surf & Go’ rule. Walkabout CHARING CROSS

Waverley Court House Waverley Public School

Continuing down Albion St I take a right into Bronte Rd and then into High St, a pretty dead end street, where there is a significant landmark called "Glenrock Terrace". This was built by Ebenezer Vickery, in 1866 for employees of his tannery and is the oldest surviving terrace in Waverley Council. It was renovated in 1990.

Crossing the road I head down Victoria St where this majestic church can be seen for miles away. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church was built in 1913, and is mother-church of the Franciscan Friars in Australia and parish church for Saint Charles Borromeo. It was designed by Sheerin & Hennessy and built from 1890 to 1929 by John Ptolomy and by W. J. Bolton (1929) the beautiful interior was specially designed to display paintings and other decorations.

2

Heading back onto Albion St, on the left hand side there are a number of little alleyways and laneways. One particular is Judges Lane where I notice a pair of weatherboard workman's cottages, and many allyways adorning public art.

A second building was built on the present site 1880, replacing an old shop. It continued to trade as the Oxford Hotel until its licence was transferred to the Duke of Gloucester Hotel, in North Randwick, in the 1930's. Then it became the new Robin Hood Hotel and underwent a major rebuilding following the Second World War. It is excellent example of a modern commercial building

Heading down Victoria St towards Queens Park, I pass the Charing Cross Hotel (now affectionately known as the "CHARO"). Initially it was built by Irish convict William Newland who gained his freedom in 1833 & borrowed ÂŁ600. It was the first Hotel in the area, it was regularly used as the first council meeting place in the area, while Newland St (named after our first publican) and is still the home of Waverley Council's Bondi Junction office.

Noel helps elderly with contactless prescriptions elderly gentleman. I said to him ‘I can always cook you something else, you don’t have to have the same dish and I am quite a good cook.’ Then he confessed he didn’t really like my chicken cacciatore, in fact he was feeding it to his dog. But he liked my visits and told me, ‘You’re the only person who really cares about me.’“

The care factor is something that has helped Noel become a pillar of the local community since he set up business in Matraville in the mid-1980s. He knows countless customers at his two Matraville pharmacies by name and has always devoted special attention to old folk. Now, with COVID-19 sweeping through the community, Noel and his staff have had to handle a greatly increased workload. He expects that situation to last up to three months. “During that time we’ve got to be very cautious,” he said.

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED DURING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK

Eastern suburbs pharmacist Noel D’Souza has leapt to the rescue of elderly people isolated at home by COVID-19. He and his staff operate a contactless prescription service for older customers, some of whom are on multiple medication regimes. “We’re delivering to the letterbox or door step so the whole process is completely contactless,” says Noel. “They pay over the phone and we obtain the prescriptions from doctors by email or fax.”

He urges other pharmacists who do not already have contactless procedures to put them in place. “Our old and vulnerable need to have special protection during the current crisis,” he said. “The only trouble is that they will become too isolated and could suffer mental health issues as a result. For many elderly people, visits from relatives and others are their only direct social contact. Years ago, I used to deliver medicines and a weekly meal of chicken cacciatore to an

He said Bondi was a “COVID-19 hot spot,” with Waverley recently rated the highest risk Local Government Area in Sydney and a pop-up testing clinic set up at Bondi Beach. “It’s been reported that backpackers could be prime carriers and the worrying thing is that a lot of the cases in the Waverley LGA can’t be traced to the sources of infection,” Noel said. “There’s a danger the disease could take hold in neighouring beach suburbs like Coogee.” He said that, as well as, the pop-up testing clinic at Bondi, there is one at the former diabetes clinic in Avoca St, Randwick. But one of the main messages from former

Randwick mayor Noel is “Don’t Panic!” He is confident the community will get through the COVID-19 crisis if we all take sensible steps:

1. Wash hands regularly with an antibacterial wash. 2. Keep a 1.5 metre distance from others. 3. Wear a face mask N95 to cover nose and mouth. 4. Use hand sanitizer frequently and wear gloves where possible. 5. Sneeze or cough on your arm or cover mouth and nose. 6. Try not to touch your nose, eyes or mouth. 7. Avoid being in a group of more than two people. 8. Minimise or avoid unnecessary contact with the elderly. Meanwhile, he says, pharmacies are at the “front line” in the battle against the COVID-19 virus and he is managing to maintain stocks of hand sanitizer, face masks, asthma sprays and other in-demand supplies. He urges people in high-risk categories to get vaccinated against flu. “The flu vaccine will not combat COVID-19, however it will it help in reducing the severity and spread of seasonal influenza which can lower a person's immunity and make them susceptible to other illnesses.”

FREE EXPERT ADVICE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES Looking for help starting or growing your small business? Or pivoting it in the time of COVID? Free professional advice is at hand through Realise Business.

Funded by the NSW Government through the Business Connect program, Realise Business offers up to 34 hours of advisory, workshops, webinars and seminars to owners of small businesses {ie those with under $2m in turnover and less than 20 employees}. Because of the Coronavirus, the NSW Government decided to waive the previously incurred out-of-pocket expense for these services, enabling businesses to access 34 hours at no cost to the client until the Pandemic, or its impact on businesses, are over. Prior to COVID-19, the first four hours of advice were free while the remaining hours were heavily discounted. “We help people from the first seed of an idea, which is a great time to see us, because we can guide you through the maze of setting up a business; also we run Start a Business workshops,” says Amanda Warrington, Business Advisor at Realise Business, who provides advice under this scheme to small business at all stages. “And we help people with businesses who have reached a road block and not sure which way to turn: that’s also a really important time.” Especially when they understand that systems they may have initially put in place won’t take them to the next level. Or that things need to change and they will give it one last go.

Another aspect that helps Amanda achieve top results in coaching clients is that she really enjoys her job: “I love my work,” she enthuses. “Helping people to understand business because to me, it actually came quite easy.” Indeed, her over 20 years of expertise in business has been well acknowledged. Earlier this year Amanda’s guidance of Kerri Ainsworth’s new business Art Travel Adventures won an award for small business growth. Another accolade is exemplified by Amanda’s most recent case study: let’s call her JB - Jane Businessperson. Referred by one of her friends, JB wasn't enjoying her business anymore and started applying for jobs. “But when I sat down with her, I realised she in fact loved her business but couldn’t move it forward,” Amanda observes. “I could see the potential so I suggested she give it one last shot – and still apply for jobs.”

Amanda set goals for her and JB is still operating today. “She is in such demand and has increased her sales by well over 100% and won an international award for her work.” During this time of COVID, Amanda has been busy. “My job as a business advisor is to help people to see differently, to recognise how they’re going to come out of this time. They have to be agile,” she observes. “Some of my clients have come up with some great new ideas for their businesses after a couple of sessions, which is very satisfying."

WOOLLAHRA

Council services

The safety of our community and our staff is Council’s number one priority, and we ask that everyone continue to follow social distancing requirements and observe restrictions to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Whilst our Customer Service Centre is temporarily closed, we are still here to help. You can call 9391 7000 for all service requests, or lodge an online service request on our website. Council libraries are also temporarily closed, but library staff are available on 9391 7100 and email: library@woollahra.nsw.gov. au. Small business support

Council is providing more than $5m in relief to local small businesses to help soften the impact of COVID-19. Support measures introduced on March 24 include: • Rent relief for 6 months for all small business tenants of Council-owned properties, and for the same period, no fees will be charged to any small business in the local government area for health, hygiene, licensing and fire safety inspections. • All outdoor and footpath dining fees waived for a period of 6 months.

WAVERLEY

Councillors raise stink over toilet air freshener Waverley Council is reviewing the type of automatic air freshener used in some of its public toilets following completes the substance is a health hazard.

Councillors Tony Kay and Angela Burrill moved a motion calling on an urgent investigation into the health impacts of the air fresheners on people with asthma. They suggested warning signs about the health hazards could be placed outside public conveniences. Emily Scott Director, Community, Assets and Operations, said: “Council operates automatic air fresheners in a small proportion of its facilities. The air fresheners assist in providing a more pleasant environment for users of the facilities. Were they not in place, it would likely lead to an increased number of community complaints relating to bad odours. “Council is in the process of awarding a new cleaning and hygiene services contract, which provides an opportunity to move to an alternative type of air freshener. It should be noted that moving to products advertised as oil-based, organic or all natural may not completely remove the health risk for people who have pre-existing conditions such as asthma or allergies.” Ms Scott did not support the idea of posting warning signs about the air freshener. “It is felt that displaying warning signs on toilet doors across Council facilities may unduly alarm the wider community,” she said.

• Parking meters have been turned off until further notice. Timed parking restrictions will remain in force to ensure adequate parking turnover for our commercial centres and retail shopping locations. Free one-hour parking is available at Kiaora Place, Cross Street and the Cosmopolitan Centre car parks in Double Bay.

Development applications during COVID-19

Citizen of the year

“Our planning staff are working remotely and are continuing to undertake required site inspections and complete assessments for applications,” the Council says.

Waverley Council’s development application (DA) team is continuing to assess and determine applications during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We ask that applicants and neighbours who have made submissions to applications be mindful of social distancing requirements outlined by the Government to ensure the safety of all including Council officers.”

Congratulations to Barry Joseph, who has been recognised as the 2020 Woollahra Citizen of the Year for his outstanding volunteer contribution to our local community. Barry has volunteered for more than 30 years with local organisations including Rose Bay Rotary, the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Montefiore. The Woollahra Citizenship Awards celebrate the individuals and groups who have demonstrated excellent citizenship by helping to improve the lives of the people of Woollahra and the wider community. For more info on our other Citizenship Awards category winners, visit: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/citizenshipawards2020.

The Waverley Local Planning Panel has held its first remote panel meeting and the Council is putting in place special operational procedures that will allow for speakers to address the panel and determinations to be posted on Council’s website.

RANDWICK

Extra clean-ups service urged

Councillor Christie Hamilton has urged Council to provide additional “on call” household clean-ups to cope with the extra items being thrown away during the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this year the Council introduced a new clean-up service structure, with one scheduled and five on-call services each year. However, Councillor Hamilton said that with people working from home, “many are taking the opportunity to clean up and dispose of old goods” and this was placing a strain on the service. “I have been advised that the ‘scheduled clean ups’ have all but been completed across our LGA with the pandemic now placing further need for our clean up service,” she said. “It is unfortunate that we have seen some people doing the wrong thing and illegal dumping during this time.” Councillor Hamilton recommended that an additional two free “on call” clean ups be offered to residents.

Marjorie O'Neill MP Member for Coogee Hi Everyone! The past few months have been extremely challenging for all of us, especially in the Eastern Suburbs. We are at the heart of the virus in NSW, and that has presented challenges to our community members, local organisations, and small businesses. I’m extremely proud of the way that our community has come together to support our most vulnerable, and ask that over the coming week and months you continue to do so.

BUS ROUTE CUTS

Council push for COVID-19 support package Randwick Council is pushing a federallyfunded support package for councils hit hard by the COVID-19 epidemic. Mayor Danny Said told the meeting there will be impacts to both current Council operations and future projects as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The financial cost is unknown at this stage, however we do expect it to be significant,” he said. “It is for this reason that local councils must be included in any future economic stimulus package to assist with providing well managed and cost-effective outcomes for communities, particularly in terms of capital works and employment.” Councillors agreed to pursue the matter through correspondence to the Prime Minister, Premier of NSW, Minister for Local Government, Shadow Minister for Local Government, Members of the NSW Legislative Council and local State Members of Parliament.

Extra parking spots around Prince of Wales

Parking for Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit staff from the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, will be a little easier thanks to new parking measures being implemented by Randwick City Council.

The Customer Service Centre at 55 Spring St is currently closed to the public, however, for all general planning information, please call our Duty Officer on 9083 8484 or email Duty.Planner@waverley.nsw.gov.au

Hospital staff from these departments can apply for a Special Temporary Parking Permit that will allow access to temporary Special Permit Parking Zones and to some of the Resident Parking Zones near to the hospitals.

All applications can be mailed to PO Box 9, Bondi Junction, NSW, 1355 or can be lodged by appointment by calling 9083 8000.

The new Special Permit zones will be located on streets in close vicinity to the hospitals and will provide almost 80 special parking spaces. “It was really important for us to find immediate, practical ways to support our frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic, in order to make their lives a little bit easier,” explained Randwick Mayor Danny Said.

Despite COVID-19, the campaign to Save Our Buses is in full swing due to leaked government documents showing the Government’s plan to cut 16 bus routes across the Eastern Suburbs. Our bus services are crucial to keeping our community together, and getting us where we need to do. I recently sent a physical copy of the petition to every household in the electorate of Coogee, but if you didn’t receive one, you can download it from my website: https:// marjorieoneill.com.au/community/petitions/ In order for any petition signatures to be submitted to Parliament, we must receive a physical copy of the petition. WHAT IS

CORONAVIRUS?

Recommendations for face covering use by the general public vary, with some authorities recommending against their use, some recommending their use, and others requiring their use. At present, there is not enough evidence for or against the use of masks (medical or other) in healthy individuals in the wider community.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Currently, there is no available vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. Management involves the treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures.

The disease was first identified in Dec, 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of smell. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to viral pneumonia, multi-organ failure, or cytokine storm. The time from exposure to onset of symptoms is typically around 5 days but may range from 2-14 days. The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, or talking. The droplets usually fall to the ground or onto surfaces rather than remaining in the air over long distances. People may also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face. Over time on surfaces, the amount of virus declines until it is insufficient to remain infectious, but it may be detected in a laboratory for hours or days.

It is most contagious during the first three days after the onset of symptoms, although spread may be possible before symptoms appear and in later stages of the disease. The standard method of diagnosis is by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab. Recommended measures to prevent infection include: • Frequent hand washing. • Maintaining physical distance from others (especially from those with symptoms). • Covering coughs, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. • In addition, the use of a face covering is recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers.

COVID-19 IT'S IN YOUR HANDS

symptoms, which can then range from mild through to severe disease, and sometimes can be fatal. Both viruses are also transmitted in the same way, by coughing or sneezing, or by contact with hands, surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus. As a result, the same public health measures, such as hand hygiene (hand washing), good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue) and good household cleaning are important actions to prevent both infections. The speed of transmission is an important difference between the two viruses. Influenza typically has a shorter incubation period (the time from infection to appearance of symptoms) than COVID-19. This means that influenza can spread faster than COVID-19. While the range of symptoms for the two viruses is similar, the fraction with severe disease appears to be higher for COVID-19. While most people have mild symptoms, approximately 15% of people have severe infections and 5% require intensive care in a hospital ICU. The proportions of severe and critical COVID-19 infections are higher than for influenza infections.

Will the flu vaccine protect against COVID-19?

No, but it is more important than ever to get a flu vaccine this year. Flu vaccination reduces your chances of getting influenza, which means it also reduces the risk of you having two potentially serious infections, influenza and COVID-19, at the same time. People are encouraged to discuss with their GP or other immunisation providers how to organise to get their influenza vaccination with the social distancing requirements and other measures in place to minimise potential exposure to coronavirus. People not eligible for free flu vaccine can consider also get vaccinated through many pharmacies. Children under 5 years can also access the free influenza vaccine through community health centres and local councils that immunise children.

What are coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some coronaviruses cause illness in humans and others cause illness in animals, such as bats, camels, and civets. Human coronaviruses generally cause mild illness, such as the common cold. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve to infect and spread among humans, causing severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which emerged in 2002, and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) which emerged in 2012.

How is the virus spread?

Human coronaviruses are spread from someone infected with COVID-19 virus to other close contacts with that person through contaminated droplets spread by coughing or sneezing, or by contact with contaminated hands, surfaces or objects. The time between when a person is exposed to the virus and when symptoms first appear is typically 5 to 6 days, although may range from 2 to 14 days. For this reason, people who might have been in contact with a confirmed case are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days. Most COVID-19 cases appear to be spread from people who have symptoms. A small number of people may have been infectious before their symptoms developed.

How long does COVID-19 last on surfaces?

According to the World Health Organisation, it is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (eg; type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment). If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with a common household disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or

wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.

What are the symptoms?

Patients may have fever, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath and other symptoms. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress.

Who is most at risk?

In Australia, the people most at risk of getting the virus are: • Travellers who have recently been overseas. • Those who have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. • People in correctional and detention facilities. • People in group residential settings. People who are, or are more likely to be, at higher risk of serious illness if they get the virus are: • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 50 years and older with one or more chronic medical conditions. • People 65 years and older with chronic medical conditions. • People 70 years and older. • People with chronic conditions or compromised immune systems. • People in aged-care facilities. • People with a disability. At this stage the risk to children and babies, and the role children play in the transmission of COVID-19, is not clear. However, there has so far been a low rate of confirmed COVID-19 cases among children, relative to the broader population. There is limited evidence at this time regarding the risk in pregnant women.

What is the difference between COVID-19 and the flu?

The first symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza (flu) infections are often very similar. They both cause fever and similar respiratory

How long does the COVID-19 infection last?

The infection period for the virus will vary from person to person. Mild symptoms in an otherwise healthy individual may resolve over just a few days. Similar to influenza, for an individual with other ongoing health issues, such as a respiratory condition, recovery may take weeks and in severe cases could be potentially fatal.

How is COVID-19 diagnosed?

Infection with COVID-19 is diagnosed by finding evidence of the virus in respiratory samples such as swabs from the back of the nose and throat or fluid from the lungs. Samples for testing can be taken directly by GPs or at a range of private pathology sites across the state that are suitable for collection of COVID-19, or at public hospitals across NSW.

How is it prevented?

Some simple measures significantly reduce the risk of catching COVID-19 and of spreading it: • Clean your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand rub/sanitiser. • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing and sneezing or use your elbow, not your hands • Avoid close contact with people unwell with cold or flulike symptoms, and stay home if you have these symptoms. • Avoid touching your face and avoid shaking hands with others. • Try to maintain a distance of 1.5 metres from others as much as possible, and avoid crowded places.

Is there a cure or vaccine?

There are no vaccines that protect against COVID-19. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19. Early diagnosis and general supportive care are important. Most of the time, symptoms will resolve on their own. People who have serious disease with complications can be cared for in hospital.

Captain Tom Moore knighted for NHS fundraising efforts

Captain Tom (Thomas Moore) at the age of 99, April 6, 2020, began to walk laps of his garden in aid of NHS Charities Together, with the goal of raising £1,000 by his hundredth birthday. In the 24-day course of his fundraising he made many media appearances and became a popular household name in the UK, generating much interest in his life story, earning a number of accolades and attracting over 1.5 million individual donations. He featured in a cover version of the song "You'll Never Walk Alone", with proceeds going to the same charity. The single topped the UK music charts and made him the oldest person to achieve a UK number one. On the morning of his hundredth birthday the total raised by his walk passed £30 million, and by the time the campaign closed at the end of that day had increased to over £32.79 million. His birthday was marked in a number of ways, including flypasts by the Royal Air Force and the British Army. He received over 150,000 cards, and was appointed as honorary colonel of the Army Foundation College. Captain Tom was knighted for his fundraising efforts.

Hobbyists made scrubs for doctors and nurses When COVID-19 started in Australia, medical scrubs were in short supply, and hobbyists stepped up to lend a hand.

Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff wear scrubs under their personal protective equipment (PPE), but the garments were difficult to buy. • Nearly 900 people joined a Facebook sewing group that made scrubs for health workers. • Health workers need scrubs because of the coronavirus, and shortages had made them hard to find. • A non-for-profit fashion school in Melbourne was flooded with orders for scrubs.

Costume-themed bin outings go viral as people look for laughs during coronavirus isolation

Backyard camping

In the middle of a global pandemic, the typical school holidays getaway was not an option for early 2020, but it didn't stop hundreds of people from sleeping out under the stars. Outdoor education teacher, David Marriott launched a social media page, the backyard campsite, for his school community to connect over a virtual campfire, and share pictures and stories. David says it's helped people feel less cooped up and isolated during coronavirus self-isolation "It's about getting outdoors. I know we're limited to our backyards but at least we get to do the things we love."

Kooking up a storm A hand-made laughing kookaburra built in a Queensland front yard is stopping people in their tracks with his enormous size and booming laugh. Townsville local Farvardin Daliri has been stuck in Brisbane during the lockdown, spending his spare time perfecting a giant kookaburra in the south-west suburb of Bellbowrie. The giant bird is 8.5 metres from tail to beak, and 4.5 metres tall. Daliri has created other sculptures over the years, including a giant koala, the Jolly Swagman, Slim Dusty and other icons, but we decided as we need tourism after COVID-19 that I might as well build it in Brisbane and drive it up the coast,” Dr Daliri said. “We want to have the last laugh over COVID-19 with the kookaburra. We’ll also have laughing workshops along the road, so we can get everyone laughing around it and make them feel better,” he said. Dr Daliri is planning to drive the kookaburra north to Townsville in the last week of July as restrictions ease.
