fell in love with the prison warder’s blind daughter. Before being lead away to his fate he wrote her a love letter and signed it “From Your Valentine”. When given the letter her sight returned so that she was able to read it.
It’s an interesting question and not half as romantic as might be expected. In truth it’s about the tussle between the Roman Empire and Christianity and is marked by miracles, martyrdom and the clash of ideologies.
Valentine was buried, just north of Rome, on 14th February. The day became St Valentine’s Day and in due course eclipsed the pagan festival of Lupercalia.

If you too would like to be involved with helping publish this paper, please feel free to call me on 0408 998 058.
We hope you enjoy this edition of the paper and the month of St Valentine, patron saint of affianced couples, beekeepers, happy marriages and epilepsy.
Young mother Rebecca Vinny lives 130 metres from the proposed incinerator site. “It’s insane,” she said. “I have three children and the harmful health effects of this kind of pollution might not show up for years. And what about property prices? How are you going to sell your one and a half million dollar house when it’s next to a toxic incinerator?”
He said the plan was not only a danger to public health, but did not make economic sense. “Waste incineration is the most polluting and expensive way to make energy,”
ID
How true this is we will never know, but when sent to jail to await his execution Valentine
Mr Hanson said the incinerator would provide steam for Opal’s paper mill by burning 165,000 tonnes of “non-recyclable” waste each year – 35,000 tonnes of which will contain PVC, which creates highly toxic pollutants such as dioxins when burnt.
DIRECTORY CLASSIFIEDS P22-23
For example, the article “A Secret Day on Sydney Harbour” was written by one of our long time advertisers who mentioned it in casual conversation. We loved the article, so now you can read it in this and the next two editions of Eastern Suburbs Life.
Our team also deserves a big thank you as too do our readers who contribute with their thoughts, suggestions and comments.
Former Mayor and local pharmacist Noel D’Souza said the waste burned by the incinerator would impact people throughout Randwick LGA and beyond. “This incinerator is a threat to air quality for the people of Sydney generally,” he said. “The diffused gases and pollutants know no borders and these pollutant gases and irritants will become a health hazard for all.”
COUNCIL NEWS P21
Producing this paper is not quite as miraculous, but it does involve a lot of people working together with enthusiasm.

Once again free, Valentine continued to preach Christianity, and marry Christian couples. Eventually he was brought before the Emperor, Claudius Gothicus, who demanded that he renounce his faith, and upon refusing was sentenced to death.

Not surprisingly, he ended up in court where he professed his faith and belief in miracles to a sceptical judge who presented his blind daughter to Valentine as a test. Valentine was able to restore her sight and the judge was so moved, that he removed all idols from his home, received baptism, and converted his entire household to Christianity.

The emperor of the time, Claudius Gothicus, forbade soldiers to marry on the grounds that unmarried men made better soldiers. Valentine however, continued to secretly marry young couples at Christian weddings both breaking the law and insulting current pagan beliefs.
Introducing the ambassadors at a press call at Bondi beach, Mayor Paula Masselos urged beachgoers to be vigilant. “We can all enjoy our beautiful parks and beaches when everyone cooperates,” she said.

However, before relating the story it is useful to know that the Romans started their annual calendar with the pagan festival of Lupercalia on 15th of February. This was when the weather started to improve, and the military began their campaigns.

Becoming a Saint requires things like filial devotion to the Church, penance for sins committed, patience in adversity, becoming a martyr and performing miracles. Valentine was martyred in 269 AD and below is the story of two of his miracles.

Phil Mace interviews
Gessica Marmotta First impressions count. Nobody understands this more than Gessica Marmotta.
One of her clients found out first hand after meeting future husband, wearing what Gessica had styled her in earlier that day. Another client thanks Gessica for inspiring her to leave the clunky shoes at home in favour of points and says she is “a Godsend!” Honing her creativity in self taught fashion early, Gessica’s mother would eventually fabricate her young daughters own designs to the delight of her Italian family who called her “zingarra” or gypsy. Since that time her career in styling not only people’s wardrobes but also everything from events and interiors to wedding dresses has taken Gessica from Sydney to Milan, Dubai, Barcelona and back again. There is still an element of the gypsy about Marmotta’s work these days. Bespoke fashion tours of vintage stores organised by Gessica embrace the idea of the unique being something not always accessible from modern retail but instead to be discovered and assembled from pieces of the past. These vintage or recycled designer pieces are then thrown into the mix as she says “an extra colour pop, or the statement accessory, the clashing print, the blend of new and old. Oh yes, I am definitely a dreamer and my clients are blank canvases who become masterpieces when we’re finished.” Continuing with the theme of items cast aside by history and reinvention, Gessica’s clients acknowledge we can all become stuck in our own personal time warp at times. Change of life’s circumstance can sometimes leave us dressing as the person
we used to be rather than the person we wish to be. She says that reinventing your style helps you let go of the past which holds you back and change into something that might take you to new heights. Most clients will carry certain ideas in their head of which colours and shapes work for them. Sometimes it takes the unbiased and trained eye of a stylist to gently edit and nudge which clothes will actually flatter. Gessica is careful to underline that whilst everyone has a unique personality and lifestyle, they also possess a unique physicality that will not always be boxed by notions such as the hour glass or pear or even apple for that matter. Realistically, the women she dresses range from the tiny to the curvaceous, and more common than not they are a 14, 16 or 18 in size. Where some people may chose to hide a figure from this range with baggy options, Gessica instead pulls and pushes the sartorial lines to amplify the beauty of each shape. There is big business here as these women care about their appearance but aren’t always given the option of looking sharp from items off the rack. Gessica concludes that “when you know the shapes that work on you, then experiment with something else, add in a new colour or shape and see how you feel in it".

ESL talks to Artist & Gallery Owner, Ralph Kerle
ESL: Why did you become an artist? RK: I have always been a creative. Like many,
their colours, forms, tones and shapes… then know when to capture them with my camera.
I hit a bout of depression in my life and felt a deep loss of purpose. The doctor prescribed me anti-depressants which didn’t work for me.
These images cannot be artificially created. I don’t use any photoshop or digitally edit or change colours. I don’t need to. I crop and use contrasting effects to match the colours I originally saw through my eyes.
One day I took out my son’s kayak, in the hope of finding solitude. Over a period of time, I found my mental health improved, my physical health improved; my general wellbeing was healing. This experience was so profound, I wanted to record it, and this is the basis of my art practice.
In the mid 1980s I was diagnosed with keratoconus. This is a condition of the eye where the muscles in the cornea break down over time. I underwent a cornea transplant. Though this procedure saved me from blindness, objects now come with a haloed effect, and I am unable to see straight lines the same way as most other people. Though this directly impacts the way I see the world, when I take a photograph it is rather instinctual and mindful.
The images I take could not possibly be reconstructed using only technology. I am capturing the world from a very personal and pure perspective. In the beginning I didn’t know whether these artworks would resonate. I received feedback from artists, educators and film makers saying that they were beautiful images.
ESL: Why did you choose to work with the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation? RK: In Australia alone, eye diseases affect
ESL: Why did you open a gallery? RK: For three years I was exhibiting at the
Sydney Intercontinental Hotel, this was a prosperous time. International travellers, as well as, local buyers purchased editions and mementos to take home. I now have works in collections throughout all four continents around the globe. The Intercontinental became a quarantine hotel and all internal retail operations were closed. As I began to realise that the pandemic would last some time, I looked for other opportunities to open a gallery. The business model was working well and all I needed was a space.
ESL: What is your background in art? RK: In 1979, I graduated from Victorian College of the Arts with a major in Dramatic
Arts and hold a Masters in Creative Industries. In the early 80s, I was appointed associate director of the Sydney Theatre Company where I concentrated on new technology influencing the presentation of live performance, known then as multi-media. In the early 90s, I worked with George Patterson Advertising Agency where I used my skills as a talent director, directing television commercials. This gave me fantastic insight into the art of the cameras and the emergence of videography.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES GROUP BECOME A FOUNDING MEMBER
Meet and get to know fellow professionals with a view of working together, sharing information and news and collectively promoting your business.
About a decade ago with the rapid improvement in still camera technology, I rediscovered my love for single image work.
ESL: What is unique about your artwork? RK: My artwork are photographs that are
existential documents. Though nature is to thank for providing these beautiful images, they seem surreal, other-worldy. We all see the world from different perspectives, and then our brains interpret it for us. I have gradually learnt how to “find” these images;

A ‘SECRET’ DAY ON SYDNEY HARBOUR PART ONE It’s a fine day and we’re heading out onto the harbour for a lazy summer sail and picnic in the modern classic, Scruffie Marine’s flagship, Secret 20.
We chose to leave from Rose Bay boat ramp this time, which is in the south eastern corner of the harbour and offers the quickest path to the best sailing areas and perfect beaches. Being the closest ramp to the open water there are usually quite a few small fishing boats at the ramp, both commercial and recreational and it’s a public ferry wharf as well, so it gets a little exciting sometimes. The Secret 20 is an easy going, sea-kindly gaff cutter with good, balanced performance on all points, but she really gets up and flies when running or reaching. Those who have some sailing experience will enjoy the light helm and predictable heeling motion, as well as the raw performance of this modern take on classic racers. Secret 20 owners are very confident with their boats and take them out in all conditions, so far with winds up to 30 knots. I chuck a reef in at 20 knots if I’m not racing. She is a safe boat with enough airtight compartments and safety features that make her crew, of six (seven at a squeeze) confident and comfortable. This is maybe the 10th time I’ve taken out my Secret 20 (built by Derek Ellard in Queensland Australia) and I’ve got to know her well. She is a modern interpretation of East Anglian fishing smacks from the golden years of sailing at
the turn of the last century, renowned among classic yacht enthusiasts. Although loosely based on these thoroughbred working boats, looks can be deceiving. She has a traditional appearance above the waterline but below it’s a different matter. The keel is reminiscent of the full-length type popular with the smacks, but has a large cutaway towards the bow to give her a fin type leading edge, while retaining that directional stability provided by the large surface area remaining aft. The hull has a very fine entry which tapers smoothly to a fuller section amidships, sliding gently back with the perfect amount of rocker, to a graceful counter stern. And when you see her on the trailer with all the sails up, and you can see the keel, rudder and wetted area below the water line, you know she’s going to be quick and point well. It’s very rewarding to have one of the best looking and handling boats on the harbour, and I’m continually beating away the hordes of bystanders and interested parties harassing us at the ramp (I keep a short stick in the cockpit.) Secret’s probably the perfect boat for the harbour with her shoal draft and manageable rig. We were due to leave Rose Bay boat ramp about 10am (remember it is Sunday) and pulling up at the ramp I could smell the salt breeze, eagerly anticipating what the predicted southerly might hold for the day’s adventure. EDGECLIFF HEARING Face masks help protect us from COVID 19, but they add communication challenges for everyone, especially people with hearing loss. That is because: • Face masks lower the volume of a person's speech by about 5 decibels and muffle the speech. • Face shields, social distancing and plastic barriers further muffle and reduce volume. • Face mask ear loops can tug on behind-the-ear hearing aids and cause other problems.
• We all subconsciously lip read, and those with hearing loss can rely on lip reading clues and other facial movements to understand conversation. The face mask hides many of these cues. Therefore, please show understanding and patience when you encounter someone who is having difficulty hearing you. A small increase in volume and decrease in speed of talking helps those with a hearing loss hear you from behind a face mask. This advice is brought to you by Edgecliff Hearing, your local hearing experts. We are conveniently located in the Edgecliff Centre, Level 3 above the Post Office.

Living life with dignity and purpose Group Homes Australia is an innovative and world-leading model offering dementia care, high care, respite and palliative care in a welcoming environment that values independence and resident involvement in the daily activities of the home. Residents live with dignity and a sense of purpose in a small scale environment.
The Group Homes model is the first of its kind in Australia and focuses on creating a home, instead of an institution, that emphasises the resident’s abilities rather than their disabilities. Each home has trained staff on site 24/7, called Homemakers, a high ratio of carers to residents – and is the very opposite of the institutionalised care model. The Homemakers work alongside residents to get them involved in all sorts of day-to-day activities of living. This could be cooking, gardening, or shopping: anything that is purposeful and meaningful for that person. They work hard to support people with dementia to stay active in their local communities – whether that’s by teaching the local café staff a few things about dementia, or by supporting a resident to keep up with walks around their neighbourhood. At Group Homes Australia, the design and environment are part of the therapy. No matter where a resident goes in the home, the environment is friendly and functional. It looks and feels like an ordinary home. Residents know that a living room is a living room because there is a lounge, a coffee
table, family photo albums, a resident’s knitted blanket that they brought from home, and maybe even a pet, or a basket of laundry waiting to be folded, and a fireplace, creating a warm, cosy environment. The kitchen looks and smells like a kitchen where there are freshly baked muffins, the kettle ready to be boiled and a soup simmering on the stove. Before a meal, residents will be encouraged to participate in chopping and peeling vegetables and setting of the table. The garden is open and inviting. A resident will walk into the garden and find a vege patch that needs to be watered, leaves that need raking and a space that is tranquil and inviting. Group Homes Australia has homes in Sydney’s North Shore (St Ives and Turramurra), Northern Beaches (Warriewood) and Eastern Suburbs (Vaucluse, Rose Bay and Queens Park) and Inner West (Hunters Hill) and Sutherland Shire (Caringbah). This innovative model of care is an alternative to traditional aged care facilities. Smaller care environments have been proven to increase quality of life, reduce rates of depression and reduce hospitalisation for people living with dementia. At Group Homes Australia, there is a focus on the needs and wants of each individual resident, no matter their care level. It allows residents to receive the care and support that they need, while still living with dignity and purpose.

We continue to explore the important contributions of past parishioners of St Mark’s Anglican Church, Darling Point. THOMAS SUTCLIFFE MORT -
Part One TS Mort is one of the greatest Australians. He strode like a colossus across early Sydney and his influence was immense. He was a man of great vision and profound humanity and was a great inspiration to others. His commitment to the development of a fair and prosperous Australian society is his greatest legacy. As a result of reduced family circumstances and prospects in his native Lancashire, Thomas Mort arrived in Sydney in 1838 at the age of 21 with little capital. He rapidly rose to prominence in the colony through hard work and drive.
In the words of contemporary biographer JH Heaton, “Mr Mort was more or less identified with nearly every movement for the advancement of New South Wales, and by his business talents, indomitable enterprise, public spirit, and high character exercised a great power for the general good”. When he died in 1878, his reputation was such that, in a rare act, the public subscribed funds to raise a statue to his honour in Macquarie Place. Mort’s family motto was “Persevere to Succeed”. To this he added a towering intellect and outstanding business acumen.
He personally started many commercial ventures and pastoral enterprises, including pioneering the auctioneering of wool (today’s Elders). He was a Founder of the AMP Society, sugar growing in Moreton Bay district, the Sydney Railway Company, Mort’s Docks at Balmain (the first dry dock in Australia), land sub-division at what is now the suburb of
Mortdale, the establishment of a unique dairy industry at Bodalla, various mining enterprises and he established the first freezing works in the world. While many of his deeds were ground-breaking, perhaps his greatest achievement was pioneering the refrigeration industry, particularly in regards to transportation over long distances which facilitated the supply of Australian meat and dairy products to the rest of the world. Most ordinary men would be lauded for their singular effort in any one of these endeavours and yet Mort was promoter, financier and passionate instigator of so many of the worthwhile economic and social movements of early Australia.
Next month in Part Two of his story we will further discuss some of his legacy that shaped our emerging nation.
According to Prof Barnard in Visions and Profits, while eschewing public life, he maintained two underlying beliefs; “that the material welfare of the community did depend on the successful cooperation of capital and labour; and that a prosperous community could rid itself of social ills”.

A letter was written in the SMH in 1930 about the water tank. Sir, The new water tank at Vaucluse is a grotesque and unsightly structure. Its site is the most commanding In Sydney, and was worthy of an imposing landmark. Had this water tank been constructed in the form of an ornamental round tower it would have been an adornment. The authorities responsible for this disfigurement had evidently little regard for city beautification.

6 At the end of Towns Rd is Coles Supermarket, which was once a theatre, created by George Webster and Guy Crick who combined their skills in exhibition and architecture to create a varying but recognisable chain of theatres. The first was the Rose Bay North Kings Theatre, opened in June 1935. It was leased to E. Smythe and stayed in the Kings Circuit until 1947. Greater Union Theatres had bought the Kings Theatres chain in 1946, but new owners of the Rose Bay North King Theatre in July 1947; P. Sourry and A.A. Coroneo continued on their own. The Rose Bay North Kings Theatre closed on Oct 17, 1958. The circle seating area was demolished and the building was bought by Mills & Mills and occupied by Boyce Brothers, a women’s wear manufacturer. It was later a fruit & vegetable market. In April 2006 it became a Coles Supermarket.

Founded in 1882. Kincoppal was established at Elizabeth Bay in 1909. The two schools were amalgamated in 1971 to become Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart. The view from here is the most spectacular view of Sydney Harbour, and arguably the best place to see the NYE fireworks. Opposite Kincoppal is Kambala Girls' School, established in 1884 at Fernbank, Edgecliff Rd by Miss Louisa Jane Gurney and, in 1887, in partnership with Mme Soubeiran, moved to the house "Kambala" in Bellevue Hill, set in 13 acres, from which the school took its name.
4 7
I turn left onto Old South Head Rd and continue my walk passing Mark Moran Home, now a luxurious retirement facility, but before that it was Vaucluse Boys' High School which was opened on June 30, 1960. The school became co-educational in Jan 1982. It was declared in 2005 that Vaucluse High and the nearby Dover Heights High would be merged to form Rose Bay Secondary College. I pass a house with a bird sculpture soaring over the garage. A plaque reads:
"WON & LOST" Installed April 2012, Sculptor Peter Maxwell Allison (2/4/1950- 11/10/2014) Horseshoe Creek Foundry, WAUCHOPE NSW This is crafted from stainless steel sheet and curvilinear shapes specialised machinery Peter manufactured for this purpose. His training at QANTAS as a Ground Engineer provided the skills which were then utilised in his many artistic pursuits..Peter was a good example of a Polymath quietly achieving great works of art in his incredible foundry workshop. He is sadly missed.
In 1913, the School moved again, to its present site in New South Head Road, Rose Bay. The property was known as "Tivoli", from the original Tivoli Estate, and was previously occupied by Captain William Dumaresq and later by merchant James Robinson Love. The new building was built in 1841, and the notable architect John Horbury Hunt was commissioned to extend it. On New South Head Rd by Towns Rd is "EMMA'S WELL". This is a natural source of spring water that was enjoyed by the traditional owners of Woollahra and the early occupants or Vaucluse and Rose Bay. The 1874 constructed well is associated with Sir John Hay, a Scots-born pastoralist, businessman, quiet philanthropist and long-serving parliamentarian of colonial NSW, who had connections with several properties situated within the Municipality of Woollahra - including Samuel’s Breakwell’s 60-acre grant, on which Emma's well is located. The site's name derives from Emma Collins, an Aboriginal woman residing nearby.

Creating the next Generation of Generosity Local charity Kids Giving Back has an ambitious mission - to create the next Generation of Generosity. The organisation formed in 2012 had humble beginnings. Two local mums Carole Schlessinger and Ruth Tofler-Riesel were looking for ways to engage their kids in activities that developed altruism and the spirit of giving back to the community through volunteering. Unfortunately, nothing existed and the more people they spoke to, the more families they identified were also looking for the same opportunities for their children. The ‘road block’ they hit, was the catalyst for the formation of Kids Giving Back.
11
Kids Giving Back program activities are based on opportunities for children and families to contribute meaningfully to helping others, and educate them on the people they are assisting. Offering full and half day experiences on weekends and school holidays, as well as, programs for school groups, each program applies the concepts of education, action and reflection in the program delivery. Besides the hands on experience including cooking and producing care packs, sessions incorporate a diverse range of learning strategies such as games, guest speakers and videos to educate participants and develop empathy for the people they will be assisting.
Kids Giving Back is a charity that offers meaningful, hands on experiences for children and young people to help others. Kids Giving Back CEO Robyn Monro Miller said “We believe that through exposure to our programs children and young people will benefit from the skills they develop in both civic and social competencies resulting in an improvement in social capital for the young people involved and their communities”.
“Children are naturally altruistic. Like a muscle it needs to be used for it to develop....not every child can be a Greta Thurnburg or Mahalia, but through Kids Giving Back every child can be empowered to help others” Robyn Monro Miller, explains, “and with this for every child comes the proven preventative mental health benefits of altruism and a sense of belonging that we each receive from giving back to others”.
Working closely with charities the Kids Giving Back team identifies needs in the community and creates programs where children can help such as preparation of meals, production of care packs, and companionship for the elderly.
In just one program by Kids Giving Back 22 children prepare over 100 meals and care packs for vulnerable people and in doing so support the work of at least three charities. In 2019, Kids Giving Back delivered 238 programs and in 2020 over 100 programs were able to be delivered despite the impact of COVID on the community.
In 2021, Kids Giving Back will reach the milestone of 30,000 participants and will have distributed over 100,000 meals to vulnerable people.

Home Sweet Home Nursing Care provides care and support to allow older adults to gain or uphold personal resilience, independence and autonomy, whilst maintaining social roles, activities and relationships enabling them to live a productive lifestyle. Apart from appropriate medical care our role is to empower people to enjoy their later years, and wherever possible allow them to stay in their home environment. “Without hesitation, I highly recommend Home Sweet Home for in-home care
services and will use this excellent company for all my mother’s home care. As experienced nurses, Karen and Marella (the business owners) immediately understand the needs of the client and are able to effectively match the right care-giver to the situation. Furthermore, even when I had not engaged a care-giver, Karen and Marella generously provided their nursing advice and care recommendations to support my mother. What sets them apart from their competitors is their empathetic and knowledgeable care for their clients”.

GETTING RID OF ILLEGAL DUMPING IN BONDI With its transient population and lots of units, Bondi is a mecca for illegal rubbish dumpers. The beach might be postcard perfect, but in the back street hinterland you might find yourself stepping around a mattress, an old couch or perhaps a broken-down fridge or other whitegoods item.
lounge furniture on the grass verge was an Omega oven and a Simpson top-loading washing machine. Propped up at the end of the assemblage of junk was a yellow scooter (of the adult kind). Viewed from a distance, the scooter looked like it just happened to be standing next to the junk, leaning against the Simpson. But a closer look revealed that the scooter, an electric one, was shrouded in spider webs, its battery ripped away, parts of the bodywork cracked. It too was rubbish, and had apparently been here for some time.
Each year, Waverley Council has to clean up around 500 tonnes of rubbish from the footpaths and verges of Bondi and neighbouring suburbs. A rogue contractor recently contributed to the tally when he dumped 10 tonnes of soil in Edward Street, Bondi. But a resident spotted him and wrote down the number of his tip truck. And he has just been fined $4,000 by Waverley Council’s RID team. RID is the acronym for the Regional Illegal Dumping Squad, which operates through local councils with funding from the NSW government’s Environment Protection Authority. “In the east, it’s usually furniture, mattresses and other household items that get dumped, so the case in Edward Street was quite unusual for this part of Sydney,” said an EPA spokesperson. Some of the local RID prosecutions have involved people dumping their unwanted goods outside charity shops. Late last year, RID issued several fines ranging from $250 to $500 to people who had been illegally
This heap of rubbish also included an upholstered wooden dining chair that was in good condition and has hopefully gone on to live another life in a new owner’s place.
dumping rubbish outside the Vinnies shop at Bondi Beach, which is monitored by a Waverley Council camera. Other fines have been levied on residents who have heaped their unwanted possessions out in the street. However, usually, these rogue residents get away with it. Then, up till the council hauls away the trash, other people may contribute to the mess by adding their own unwanted items, usually under cover of darkness.
Eastern Suburbs Life took to the back streets of Bondi to investigate. In Tamarama Street, there was a hint of what lay in store as we drove past a child’s desk left out in the street.
Thus ended our field trip into the back streets of Bondi. It would be all too easy to blame Waverley Council for letting accumulations of street rubbish to occur in locations like Edward Street. But it is up to the community to report illegal dumping.
Then in Edward Street, scene of the ten tonne dumping, we saw a substantial conglomeration of dumped furniture and other consumer durables.
That’s where the dumpbusters from RID come in. Just phone them on 131555 and dob in a dumper. You need to tell them the nearest cross street. Meanwhile, you can book special rubbish collections from Waverley Council, which also holds regular days when locals can get rid of problematic rubbish items like TVs.
There was a stained sofa and matching armchair. On the sofa lay a lightweight Bissell vacuum cleaner and lined up beside the
Plus of course there are a number of reputable private rubbish contractors who can assist with your trash disposal problems.

WHAT A CARD: Fun Card Range Funny, witty, reflecting world experience describe Chris Stone’s extensive range of cards but also apply to the creative mind behind them.
Have you ever bought a card from Bondi Junction Markets? Well, the interest really starts with the creative’s interesting past. After creating cards taken from his own designs and paintings, Chris designed a card for a friend for Mardi-Gras and it was so wellreceived that it kick-started a range of funny cards. “Customers told me that the choice offered by newsagents was expensive, and the cards lacked humour,” Chris reported. Thus his new range filled a much needed demand. Today at least half of his collection are humorous cards. “All the time people come up to me and say: ‘You’ve brought so much joy to people’,” Chris says. “That in turn gives me joy.” As humour can be so individual, he creates different styles of funny cards to cater for many tastes. Inspirations include the 1950s, the internet, and life in general. “I get customers from the Blue Mountains and all over Sydney who come here (Bondi Junction markets) especially,” he reports. “I like the people, that’s one of the reasons I do markets. Because the people are what makes it.” More recently, his card range has started to attract interest from all over Australia. Produced locally, the cards use photographs, are hand-made, and reasonably priced. To enable the card to have multi-uses, the inside is left blank.
“It has been important – especially during Covid – for people to laugh and see a more positive side too,” he observed.

Card (right) and Painting by Chris Stone
Another popular card line is the ‘Bling Cards’ with famous faces featured. “In addition, all major festivities such as Christmas, Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day, Valentine’s Day and New Year are covered.” This year is also a significant one in Chris’ creative career: 2021 represents 50 years of his designing every product from fashion, bedlinen, hand-painted ceramics and home items as well as his recent line of popular cards which he launched around 2015. After studying textile design at the Royal College of Art in London, he was headhunted to work for American designer, Ken Scott, in Milan, Italy. In 1984, Chris was head-hunted again – this time to come to Australia, to work for Sheridan. As Design Director, he shaped the domestic brand into an international collection, selling in 52 countries across the globe. Chris also worked closely with artists and designers to promote the “Australian look”, and many of his designs were seen in TV series and films, such as Muriel’s Wedding. In addition, Chris is a sought-after lecturer, having taught textiles at university to fashion designers from 1989 until now. Painting canvasses became a calling in 1995, and his many sold-out exhibitions have featured colourful flowers. Today he continues this interest at his Rose Bay studio. Paula Towers

Modest Matraville hero honoured for bravery
Mark Halcro was holidaying at Lake Conjola when a massive blaze engulfed surrounding bushland. His holiday house was safe from the flames, but as he stood on the roof of the home watching the boiling mass of smoke on the other side of the lake, he heard faint cries for help.
mass of smoke. When he reached the others, he decided to have a try at taking them all to the boat in one trip. The jet ski was a three seater, but Mark managed to pile the McCarthys, Ron Coote and Natalie onto it as well as his himself. Bob McCarthy, meanwhile, remained in the water and held on to the back of the jet ski as it carried them to safety. “I had to slow down because he was starting to lose his duds,” Mark said.
Minutes later, Mark was heading across the lake on his jet ski. He rode it into a mass of smoke so thick he could barely see in front of him. “It was like the clouds were going right down to the water,” he said.
The five drenched and exhausted bushfire survivors were taken to Mark and Nicole’s house, which was to remain untouched by the inferno that engulfed much of the surrounding area, with 150 homes destroyed.
The cries for help got louder. Mark discovered five people who had been treading water for the past 40 minutes. Four of the five were aged in their seventies – Rabbitohs legend Bob McCarthy, his wife Judy, AFL great, Ron Coote, and wife Robyn. The fifth person was Ron and Robyn’s daughter Natalie, who Mark spotted first. Alongside her was Robyn, starting to weaken badly after all the time treading water and breathing smoky air.
Mark’s heroism in heading into the fiery breach to rescue the five has just been recognised as Randwick Mayor Danny Said presented him with an Australia Day Community Service Award. He had been nominated for it by Bob and Judy McCarthy, who live in Coogee.
It was during Australia’s hellish summer of bushfires a year ago.
Mark hauled Robyn onto the jet ski and ferried her to a boat idling 500 metres away. At the helm was his wife Nicole’s uncle Les Hobbs. Mark and Les got Robyn on board, then Mark headed back into the thick, eye-smarting
Mark, Matraville/Maroubra born and bred, was modest about the award. “It’s just something I did,” said the 50-year-old builder and former under-23 and reserves grade Rabbitoh. Other award recipients at the Randwick Council ceremony included LGBT rights campaigner Brenna Harding and epidemiologist Professor Mark Ferson.

Time to learn with JNC! School’s back! – and time for everyone to learn! It’s the ideal time for parents and carers to do some learning, and for younger kids to have the chance to learn too. Here are opportunities for families living in the Randwick LGA.
JNC’s Transition to School playgroup is for families with children starting school in 2022. The playgroup runs Mondays in all 4 school terms. A chance for children starting school next year to socialise with local children their own age and develop school-readiness skills. This includes learning the importance of routines, good sleep and healthy eating. And this playgroup is a culturally safe place for children to learn about the diverse cultures in their community.
The playgroup is led by skilled educators, experienced in adapting the program to online delivery if physical distancing is required. The interactive program includes music activities, story time, numeracy and literacy skills, and learning about listening, sharing and other skills important for success in the school environment. Every Monday during school term, 10-11.30am, at Hope Uniting Church, 829 Anzac Parade Maroubra. This term starts February 1. To register, phone 9349 8200/ email families@jnc.org.au Parents of playgroup participants said: “In this specialised playgroup my 4-year-old was stimulated and had special attention from the excellent educators.” “My daughter learnt there’s a time to have fun, a time to listen, to be quiet. She learnt to be sociable. She discovered she’s acknowledged
as a person and respected as an individual. To go to school is scary, but for her it’s been a joy.”
JNC’s Single Parents Support Group will
run weekly for 6 weeks, February 16 to March 23 10am-12pm. Connect with other local single parents and share experiences. Also learn about resumé writing and applying for jobs, co-parenting and mediation, strategies to manage your child’s behaviour, building strong relationships, and self-care. The Story of Laperouse Join the Friends of Laperouse Museum as they explore the voyage of Lapérouse, his story, achievements - and his mysterious disappearance. François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse and his two ships reached Kamay Botany Bay a mere six days after the First Fleet i n January 1788, and rested at on the north side of the Bay for six weeks after a long global voyage. Unlike the British however, the French were not here to colonise Aboriginal land; but were mainly an expedition of the Enlightenment, to document, catalogue and map for France. When Lapérouse sailed out of Kamay Botany Bay in March of that year however, he disappeared, never to be seen again. WHEN: FEB 13 1.30-3PM WHERE: LA PEROUSE MUSEUM, 1542 ANZAC PDE, LA PEROUSE
Ask the Author: Peter O'Brien on Bush School In 1960, newly minted teacher Peter O'Brien started work as the only teacher at a school in Weabonga, two days' travel from Armidale. Peter was only 20 years old and had never lived away from his home in Sydney. He'd had some teaching experience, but nothing to prepare him for the monumental challenge of being solely responsible for the education of 18 students, ranging in age from 5-15 years old.
Join Kadoo First Contact Tours and learn from their expert guides about Aboriginal culture at La Perouse. Starting at La PerouseMuseum and you'll discover the local flora and fauna and learn about the region's diverse history. This guided tour will take you through the native bush and coastline of La Perouse (Guriwal) where you'll explore the Dreaming of this land, taste bush tucker, be involved in a traditional ochre ceremony and a 'Welcome to Country'. Learn how the Aboriginal people hunted, fished and gathered throughout the area, and traditional cultural weaving practices. WHEN: FEB 21 11AM-12.30PM WHERE: LA PEROUSE MUSEUM, 1542 ANZAC PDE, LA PEROUSE Please bring a warm jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
In this talk, Peter will tell us the power of a good teacher, the importance of education (particularly in regional areas of Australia), how to overcome challenges and fears (including snakes and unimaginable living conditions) and the resilience and spirit of children when they are believed in, nurtured and provided with responsibilities. WHEN: FEB 23 3.30-4.30PM WHERE: ONLINE ZOOM MEETING https://www.randwick.nsw.gov.au/library/library-events/ library-calendar/events/2021/february/ask-the-author-anevening-with-peter-obrien-live-online
Max Dupain and La Perouse: The Caltex Story Discover what's been lost and what still stands at La Perouse through Dupain's distinctive lens.
This series of photographs is sourced from the collection of State Library of NSW, and dates from c. 1953.
Max Dupain was famous for his uber-modern, bold, almost heroic images of Australia's landscapes and architecture. But he was also a commercial enterprise and undertook assignments from both civic and commercial patrons.
The exhibition features striking images of La Perouse; its people, the environs and buildings. Some images are pragmatic and documentary, yet others are more evocative, capturing fleeting moments in time.
Rediscover what has been lost, and what still stands at La Perouse through Dupain’s distinctive lens. WHEN: UNTIL MAR 14 WHERE: LA PEROUSE MUSEUM, 1542 ANZAC PDE, LA PEROUSE

WOOLLAHRA
Active transport survey
A major focus for Woollahra Council is the delivery of a transport network that supports a healthy, sustainable and connected community. This involves access to travel choices that make it quick and easy to get to travel throughout our municipality, including active transport (walking and cycling) routes.
COUNCIL NEWS 21
WAVERLEY
Prime tenancies in Pavilion
Waverley Council wants to hear from businesses interested in setting up shop in the restored Bondi Pavilion when the building reopens either later this year or early next year. There are two tenancies available, one for a food and beverage outlet and the other for another retail business. Expressions of interest can be lodged with Council from Feb 9. Deadline for lodging expressions of interest is March 3. To view the tender documentation, and to apply, visit tenderlink.com/waverley
To help shape our Active Transport Plan, we want to hear from you about your priorities for walking and cycling, and what Council can do to encourage these transport options.
New electric vehicle charging station
Electric vehicle owners have a new place to charge their vehicles in Bondi Junction with the installation of a council-operated charging station at the Mill Hall Community Centre in Spring Street.
You can contribute your ideas via our online survey until Feb 26 at: yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/active
Council has prepared three different concept designs for the playground, and we are asking the community to choose the best one. Construction of the design with the most votes is planned to begin in mid-2021. View the designs and share your feedback at: yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/cookspaddock
Nature Wellness Trail
To help you tune in to the beauty of nature and escape the summer heat, Council has designed a Nature Wellness Trail in Cooper Park in Bellevue Hill.
While you take in the park’s natural creek, cascading waterfalls and fern-filled forest, there are a number of ‘Rejuvenation Stations’ where you’ll be guided through a series of meditative activities that will help you slow down, reflect and relax. Visit woollahra.nsw.gov.au/wellnesstrail for more info.
Community project funding
Do you have a community or art project worthy of council funding? If so, you’d better be quick, because applications for Community Creative and Community Connect funding close on Feb 22. Projects eligible for funding under Community Connect are those that “develop a sense of community through ensuring inclusiveness, wellbeing and involvement of all residents,” according to a Randwick Council web posting. Community Creative is designed to “provide opportunities for individual artists, groups or art organisations to connect communities and showcase creative arts and culture.” Each grant recipient can receive up to $10,000. The funding is open to individuals and not for profit organisations. To find out more, and to lodge an application, visit randwick. smartygrants.com.au/CommunityCreativeFebruary21.
Coogee shared village – should it come back?
People’s choice vote for playground upgrade The much-loved Cook’s Paddock Playground in Paddington is set for an upgrade to ensure it can continue to be enjoyed by children well into the future.
RANDWICK
The Coogee Shared Village innovation concludes on Feb 12 and the council wants to know what you thought about it.
COVID-unsafe gatherings at Bondi
Waverley Council has warned about large groups of people congregating on the grassy reserves at Bondi Beach following a recent gathering that attracted police attention. An informal Sunday afternoon performance by a drumming group at Biddigal Reserve, North Bondi, attracted a crowd that was way beyond the public health limit of 30. Police are investigating. Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos said: “We all want to enjoy the summer holidays safely and people must be mindful that something as simple as playing live music in a park like Biddigal Reserve has the potential to attract crowds, and this poses the risk that restrictions on outdoor gatherings may be breached. “Council is investing millions of dollars to help support the community and local business during COVID and our Rangers and beach ambassadors are working hard in tandem with local police, NSW Health and Transport for NSW to ensure people use our public places safely.”
MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone! I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday season. I must express my thanks to all the frontline workers, volunteers and all the members of the community who are still working very hard to ensure everyone’s safety. As students return to school all across the electorate of Coogee, school safety can be at the top of many parent’s minds. After the success of our Coogee School Safety Survey, I have relaunched our survey in 2021, and you can fill it out by visiting my website here: marjorieoneill.com.au/community/our-schools/
STAMP DUTY AND LAND TAX REFORMS
In last year’s budget, the Treasurer outlined his plan to phase out stamp duty by the 2024/25 financial year, and to introduce a land tax. This is a significant change to the structure of State taxation in NSW and will impact people in very different ways depending on their home ownership status and future home ownership/ investment plans.
It is the second council charging station to be installed in the Waverley Local Government Area. The other one is in the car park at Bondi Beach. There are also a number of privately operated charging facilities in the area. Waverley mayor Paula Massellos, pictured here at the official launch of the new station, said: “We are delighted to be giving motorists the opportunity to make a more sustainable choice whilst supporting our popular shopping precincts and tourist destinations.”
Marjorie O'Neill MP
In November last year the bottom end of Coogee Bay Road was closed to two way traffic and the freed-up space used to create an avenue of el fresco dining facilities, with a strip of real, bowling green standard grass adding to the ambience.
There is a consultation period currently open, that will close on March 15th, 2021 and I want to hear what you think about these significant changes. You can do so by scanning the QR code and filling out my quick survey.
Randwick Council is interested in the idea of the Shared Village making a triumphant return, except this time it will be permanent. If you views on the issue, you can state them at: www.yoursay.randwick.nsw.gov.au/coogeesharedvillage
Playground will cater to older kids plus little ones Community consultation on new equipment for the playground in Kokoda Park in Kensington means that older kids will be catered to as well as toddlers.
Randwick Council says the plans include “bigger swings, rope play with monkey bars, and balancing beam for the big kids, as well as a toddler swing, seesaw, and a new boat for imaginative play for the little ones.” The council conducted a series of drop-in sessions where local children submitted drawings of the kind of play equipment they’d like. “More than 40 playgrounds were designed by local kids aged 1 to 11 years old, some with a little help from mum and dad,” the council says.
