OFF LEASH PARKS IN THE WOOLLAHRA AREA P4

If “covid-19” looses it faces strict confinement and even (some hope) complete eradication. To avoid that it constantly changes form, often getting more agile so that “Double Jab” is now facing “Delta Strain”, the most virulent, fastest spreading strain yet. Fortunately, due to the brilliant work of international scientists, “Double Jab” also has different forms, including AZ (AstraZeneca), Pfizer and Moderna. All are tried, proven, tested and reliable. As of August 28 this year over 5.13 billion doses of vaccine have been given worldwide and Australia alone has given over 18,500,000, a figure that is currently growing by more than 300,000 a day (over 2 million a week) – NSW accounting for almost 1 million a week. To win the race in NSW “Double Jab” must first get over 7 million people fully-vaccinated and eventually aim for 8 million. Currently only about 3.5 million, people are fully vaccinated, so we need everyone to play their part if we are to win the prize of ending lockdowns. The article on page 15 tells the personal story of a family in the UK and how being fully-vaccinated helped two “at risk” people avoid hospitalisation. NSW statistics relate to over 16s. To give some perspective almost 48 million people have been vaccinated in the UK, mostly with the Oxford University,

AstraZeneca vaccine. This has allowed them to celebrate “Freedom Day” and attend football matches and other events like Wimbledon. We truly have a treat in store once “Double Jab” beats “Delta Strain”. So let’s “Get The Jab Done.” So let’s all “Get The Jab Done” and get on with our lives. Choose whichever vaccine is most convenient and remember to get health advice if you are in doubt, or have any concerns. Apart from Lindy Gibson’s article on page 15, we have contributions from many other people, including a news update from Dave Sharma (Member for Wentworth, page 6), Ian Tresise (continuing his Builders of Modern Australia series, page 8), a thought provoking piece from Bonita Chau (page 8), Minister Rev Ness (an article of Hope in Covid times, page 9), Deborah Tresise (Advice on planning your Will, page 11), Jewish New Year by Bella Busta (and a Honey Cake recipe, page 14), Robyn Monro Miller (Brain workouts and “Aha” moments for kids, page 18), and of course, Walkabout Cooper Park with Ruth (page 10). As always, we thank all the people who make the paper possible, including our writers, printers (Spotpress, Marrickville), One On One Couriers (who brings us the papers), Woollahra, Waverley & Randwick Councils, our Advertisers and of course our readers. We wish you all a safe September and look forward to seeing you again in October. Best wishes from “Double Jab” and all the team at Eastern Suburbs Life.

OFF LEASH PARKS IN THE WOOLLAHRA AREA Taking your dog to an off leash area is a great way to keep them fit, healthy and socialised. Whether you want your dog to have a run off leash, or a swim, Woollahra local area has plenty of places you can enjoy together. There are four parks and reserves in the local area which are designated off leash areas 24 hours a day – meaning you can play all day. There’s also another seven parks and reserves with timed off leash areas.

OFF LEASH ETIQUETTE

• Only let your dog off lead in a designated off leash exercise area. • Pick up and bin your dog poo. • You must be able to demonstrate effective voice control of your dog and keep in close proximity and within their sight at all times. • Stay alert and keep a close eye on your dog. Sometimes large groups of dogs can cause them to be over-excited and this may lead to possible antisocial behaviour. • Ensure your dog’s vaccinations, worming and flea treatments are all up-to-date. • Always ask the owner of unknown dogs if your dog can go up and play, or if you can approach their dog.

YARRANABBE PARK

Dogs are allowed off leash at all times at Yarranabbe Park, but in the adjacent Rushcutters Bay Park dogs are only allowed off leash before 10:30am and after 3:30pm.

ROSE BAY FORESHORE

Dogs are allowed off leash all day on the Rose Bay Foreshore between Dumaresq Reserve and Percival Park – making this the perfect spot for cooling down together on warmer days.

LIGHTHOUSE RESERVE

Take your dog for an off leash walk or run through Lighthouse Reserve and enjoy the epic views of the coastline and Macquarie Lighthouse. Solar powered lighting illuminates the walking path at night, making this a good choice after dark.

Rose Bay Foreshore

Dogs are allowed off leash at all times at Lighthouse Reserve, but in the adjacent Christison Park they are only permitted off leash before 10:30am and after 3:30pm.

STEYNE PARK (northern end, adjacent

to seawall) Dogs are allowed off leash at the northern end of Steyne Park between the seawall and footpath. You can take your dog onto the Steyne Park playing fields, but they need to be on a leash. Dogs are not allowed on Double Bay Beach.

ACTIVE AGING

Active aging is about staying engaged and feeling worthwhile. It adds years to people's lives and quality to those years.

Gone is the idea of retirement from life and doing nothing but "taking it easy". Instead people are encouraged to stay active, participate in life and continue to be productive. Home Sweet Home Nursing Care provides care and support to allow older adults to gain or uphold personal resilience, independence and autonomy, whilst maintaining social roles, activities and relationships enabling them to live a productive lifestyle. Apart from appropriate medical care our role is to empower people to enjoy their later years, and wherever possible allow them to stay in their home environment. “Without hesitation, I highly recommend Home Sweet Home for in-home care

services and will use this excellent company for all my mother’s home care. As experienced nurses, Karen and Marella (the business owners) immediately understand the needs of the client and are able to effectively match the right care-giver to the situation. Furthermore, even when I had not engaged a care-giver, Karen and Marella generously provided their nursing advice and care recommendations to support my mother. What sets them apart from their competitors is their empathetic and knowledgeable care for their clients”.

NEWS

EASTERN SUBURBS Ed 33, September, 2021

DAVE SHARMA FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH The recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a sobering wake-up call. It makes clear that climate change is already happening. The planet is already warming, by about 1.5 degrees Celsius since 1850. Extreme weather events are becoming more common. Human activity is warming the planet at a speed that is unprecedented in at least the last 2000 years.

As the report makes clear, rapid and large-scale emissions reductions are needed. If the world can substantially reduce emissions in the 2020s, and get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, temperature rise can still be limited. This is a global challenge, and Australia must play our part in addressing it. This will not only help address the risks to Australia posed by climate change, but also position us to take advantage of the opportunities that will flow from this economic transition. This transition is well underway in Australia. Our emissions have fallen by 20% since 2005. They are now at their lowest level since 1998. We now have the highest solar power generation per person of any country in the world, with one in four Australian homes now with rooftop solar. We are deploying renewable energy at ten times faster than the global average. We will meet and beat our emissions reduction targets under the Paris agreement. Provided we continue to focus our efforts on technology and innovation, Australia can reach net zero emissions by 2050. This is why, beyond electrification of the grid, we are focusing on other areas where technology can reduce our emissions. One important area is encouraging the uptake of electric vehicles. Australian sales

of electric vehicles have risen at record levels in the past six months, with more affordable models now available in Australia. The Government is supporting consumers to make this switch by installing new electric vehicle charging stations. Just last month we announced $25 million in funding to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to install more than 400 new electric vehicle charging stations across the country, including several here in the eastern suburbs. Another promising area for Australia is hydrogen. With our huge endowment of solar energy, Australia has the opportunity to create the clean fuel of the future in hydrogen. Under our National Hydrogen Strategy, we are investing in hydrogen projects and international partnerships to develop a safe, commercial and clean hydrogen industry. There is also immense potential for Australian farmers and agricultural producers to benefit from this transition through soil carbon initiatives. Capturing more carbon in soil not only improves soil health, builds resilience, and protects against drought – it can also create a valuable income stream for farmers, as they can sell these carbon ‘credits’.

Australia also has an opportunity to re-industrialise with low-emission production of steel and aluminium, using our abundant sources of clean energy to process our iron ore and bauxite on shore and export the finished product. We should celebrate our victories but we should also remember that higher ambition is required of us all, Australia included. So, let us all work together towards that.

EASTERN SUBURBS Ed 33, September, 2021

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA We continue the fascinating look at Sir Thomas Mitchell, a parishioner of St Mark’s Church Darling Point who first surveyed much of Eastern Australia and helped lay the foundations of a system of land tenure that enabled the development of prosperous lands to feed and keep clothed countless millions of people. SIR THOMAS MITCHELL – PART 3

Sir Thomas Mitchell was an army officer in the civil service. He conducted four substantial survey expeditions into the interior of Australia between 1831 and 1847 and covered much of Eastern Australia. To a large part, his expeditions relied on the availability of labour provided by convicts, over whom he exercised magisterial control. Major Mitchell was not timid when it came to bringing convicts into his service. “The prisoners who had hitherto formed the bulk of all the exploring parties previously led by me into the interior of New South Wales, were chosen chiefly from amongst men employed on the roads, who had acquired good recommendations from their immediate overseers; but, on this last occasion, the men forming the party were for the most part chosen from amongst those still remaining in Cockatoo Island, the worst and most irreclaimable of their class.”

Throughout Mitchell’s lifetime convicts constituted as much as 20% of the population of the new colony. Over 160,000 men, women and children, mostly small-time criminals were transported from Britain for seven years for petty offences such as stealing a loaf of bread or poaching, etc. More hardened criminals, like horse thieves, were mostly hanged or transported for life.

The overwhelming number of transportees could never afford the return journey at the end of their sentence and were destined to be absorbed into the free community in the new colony. In notable instances, their progeny were able to forge new lives as law-abiding citizens with their rights as British Subjects restored, fighting for respectability and seeking to cover up the ‘convict stain’. Mitchell saw the reformation of law-breakers as a Christian moral duty and by and large he was rewarded. In his journals he states: “The colony of New South Wales has been the means of restoring many of our unfortunate countrymen to positions in which they have shown that loyalty, industry, public spirit, and patriotism, are not always to be extinguished in the breasts of Englishmen, even by fetters and degradation.”

With many positive experiences, he expresses his pride that the more deserving of his men were rewarded with ‘ticket-of leave’ or absolute pardons, becoming valuable members of society. Convicts, by and large, had no rights during penal servitude and some serious resentment arose when First Nations persons were treated far more leniently for minor offences, such as pilfering. In stark contrast, a convict could expect to face the lash and triangle and, even worse, be sent to the dreaded secondary colonies so aptly described in Robert Hughes’, The Fatal Shore. The management of these complex challenges was a constant problem for Mitchell as it was throughout the new colony. His journals provide an important contemporary insight on many of the social issues central to the development and prosperity of modern Australia. Next month, we shall conclude our series on Sir Thomas Mitchell with a closer look at his legacy and the important role of the women in his life. Back to reality, someone once asked me to write an article. And I immediately said “yes”, without a blink of an eye, because the night before I had felt someone would do just that. And the other day I had a prompting to call someone. But I didn’t and had all sorts of non-sensical reasons why I shouldn’t, only to find out later that at that time the person was thinking of me too. Seems there’s more going on than meets the eye? So why do we sometimes hesitate to ask for things we want? After all isn’t there that

old saying, “Ask and ye shall receive”? Children do it all the time. But we adults, tend to allow our non sensical excuses to get in the way. Perhaps it would be easier if we just asked away, trusting our requests could met, and acting on those nudges to do something when they come and, who knows, turning a 40 year journey into an 11 day trip? So why hesitate when we are prompted to do something, or find something? We all need to reach out to others build community connections, find new acquaintances and build new friendships. As truly, we are all pieces of the puzzle brought together, to create and fill the bigger picture. Bonita Chau Local Woollahra Resident

SPREADING KINDNESS Spreading kindness not Covid is how two young Sydney uni students built a business in one week to spread a bit of lockdown love.

One Sunday night two besties, Amber Linz and Chloe Shaw were brainstorming over Facetime about how to help their friends riddled with boredom, loneliness and Covid cabin-fever. They wanted to send more than a “virtual hug”, an actual gift that said ‘thinking of you’ without breaking the bank. LockdownLoveSydney.com was born.

Well, if you’re referring to Oliver Twist asking “Please Sir, can I have some more?” Asking at that moment didn’t turn out so well, but that’s another story...

LockdownLove Sydney are beautifully wrapped gifts with a cheeky card, delivered within 24 hours. The cards say things like “I’m so Gladys we’re friends” or “Iso miss you so much” and allow the purchaser to customise the other side. “It’s more about the giggle from the card and the excitement of receiving a gorgeous gift at the door that we wanted”. Each gift is packed with either something fun to do, deliciously naughty to eat, or pampering to make you “feel the lerve” and they range from $22-$30. It’s a perfect way during lockdown to give a ‘hang in there’ or ‘cheer up’ gesture at a truly affordable price. https://lockdownlovesydney.com/pages/ https://www.instagram.com/lockdownlovesydney/

Freckly Faces 25-year-old Richard Habelrih who lives with autism in Maroubra, is spreading smiles around Australia with his handmade giant chocolate freckle business.

When Richard’s work was suspended during the most recent Sydney lockdown, his mother Randa suggested he throw himself into a new project that could easily be done from home, and so began ‘Freckly Faces’. Since sharing ‘Freckly Faces’ in TikTok videos the business has taken off, with Richard making and sending home-made giant chocolate freckles all around Australia, brightening up people’s days. The business runs all from the dining room table and has seen so much success, that the whole family is now involved in the production line process, with Richard still handwriting every note in each order! “We didn’t think it would generate much business, we started it as something to do during lockdown. However, the nicest part has been people commenting on our TikToks and requesting orders to send to people in lockdown as a ‘thinking of you’ style gesture.” - Randa Habelrih Randa Habelrih also founded Autism MATES, which works towards educating the community about autism, and advocates for greater inclusion and acceptance in schools and in the

workforce. The organisation was established in response to the exclusion and bullying that Richard experienced from a young age. “We believe that exclusion is not always intentional but instead due to a lack of education and appropriate tools to engage with the autistic community,” she says.

“Richard has been destigmatising autism on TikTok - in his own way, he’s educating people. As the mum of someone with autism, TikTok has really helped me to connect with other mums in the community. Some of the comments we receive are so touching, and some even move me to tears, we’re so thankful for all the encouragement and support from our TikTok fans.“ Freckly Faces can be purchased from the Autism MATES website: https://autismmates.org.au/product/ freckles/ TikTok: @autismmates

A SPARK OF HOPE IN THESE COVID TIMES How we respond to our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health in these Covid times is critical to our level of resilience. As well as being a Minister I am an exercise professional and what I know is that our physical health is paramount to our wellbeing. When Gladys says we can exercise outside for an hour a day we need to lace up the Nike’s put on the spandex and go for it, our bodies will love us for it.

Have your emotions been a bit like the Wild Mouse at Luna Park, all over the place during lockdown? One day I am happy and then the next day I want to cry, and I have even found myself yelling at the 11am news feed. One thing that can help us regulate our emotions is connecting with people we love.

I came home from a walk and my daughter saw me dancing down the path singing loud, and she said to me “mum what are you doing? You weren’t doing that down the street were you?” I showed her my 1980’s moves and told her I was dancing and singing and praising God for the glorious sunshine on this lockdown day and that it made me feel full of vitality. Her comment was “What will the neighbours think”. I replied “No one cares we are in lockdown anything goes as long as you’re in a mask and can socially distance, after all I was praying for all our neighbours near and far for their protection and safety in these times. Dear Readers, The continual changes with lockdown have been difficult for us all and I know we are trying hard to accept them in a positive way. We just need to take it day for day and I'm sure it will all be over soon.

I start at Lough Playing Fields which was once part of the Cooper family’s Point Piper Estate. In the 19th and early 20th centuries this area of land around Manning Rd was known as Edgecliff Gully. From the mid 1880s it was leased primarily as market gardens to mostly Chinese lessees. The site of the playing fields was acquired by Woollahra Council over a number of years beginning in 1927. Walking down Bunna Place, enroute to Cooper Park, I pass an enclosed shelter that resembles like something out of The Flintstones. There are many of these dotted along the Cooper Park Trail and they were constructed by Mr H. Arnold in 1936, who also created similar constructions at Taronga Zoo.

2

I pass Cooper Park Tennis courts, which was opened in Sept 22, 1923 at a cost of 698 pounds, 19 shillings and 4 pence, the clubhouse and pavilion depleted the council

In this Ed 33, September, I walk the Cooper Park Wellness Trail. Along the trail there are a number of ‘Rejuvenation Stations’ where you’ll be guided through a series of meditative activities that will help you slow down, connect, reflect and relax, especially needed now more than ever during lockdown. I will also point out historical landmarks along the way.

Development of the Park during the 1930s was based on an award winning design by E. Coleman and R.C. Coulter, the result of a competition run in 1928. Themes of romance and pleasure were enhanced with the construction of meandering paths, bridges and grottos, all set within a natural landscape. The Cooper Park Nature Wellness Trail, is designed to help you rejuvenate and refresh your mood, focus and energy. The walk begins at Moon Bridge.

4

The bridge is a fine example of the sandstone stonemasonry undertaken by

Ernest Miles and a team of 50 stoneworkers.

Built in the 1930s as part of a public arts program it was designed to provide unemployment relief during the years of the Great Depression.

coffers by 1022 pounds, 12 shillings and 1 pence. In 1989, the tennis pavilion and kiosk was renovated.

3

Cooper Park history dates back to 1885 when the then-government bought this land from Cooper Estate with the sole intention of developing it as a recreational reserve. This was finalised in 1913 when Sir William Cooper, the man after whom the park is named, gave the entire stretch of land from Bellevue Hill to Woollahra Council for use as a park. The Park is important aesthetically for its array of Depression-era cultural features which include a grass amphitheatre with retaining wall and plaque, artificial stone structures, a moon bridge, sandstone walls, steps and paths, concrete footbridges, and a diverse range of outdoor recreation facilities including a 1920s tennis pavilion and tennis courts.

with Ruth Marks

Follow the creek which meanders through the park and follows the line of a volcanic dyke that formed during the Jurassic age. On either side of the creek are sandstone and riparian forests and woodland vegetation, providing diverse habitats for local fauna. At the end of the walk is a grass amphitheatre with retaining wall and plaque that reads: Municipality of Woollahra Cooper Park To commemorate the construction of this wall and other improvement works for the public welfare in this park carried out by the unemployed relief workers in the year 1936 during The Mayoralty of Alderman K.D. Manion. An imposing stone stairway leads you to Victoria Rd, Bellevue Hill and at the end there are two stone columns at the Bellevue Hill entrance to the Park. The stone columns were originally from the Sydney G.P.O. before being moved to Elizabeth Bay House, then Vaucluse House and finally to Cooper Park in 1994. On my next walk (Ed 34, Oct) I will walk around Point Piper. Please stay safe and be well and follow health guidelines during lockdown.

COVID-19 has now been linked to many long-term complications, including heart damage, lung damage and neurological disorders. One emerging area of research is whether hearing loss can result from coronavirus infection—either as a symptom or as a complication days or weeks later. What has been observed (though still rare) is developing hearing loss, tinnitus or dizziness later in the infection process, meaning these issues are not part of the initial onset of symptoms but develop days to weeks later. A review of COVID-19 from patients worldwide has been reported in the March 22, 2021 edition of the International Journal of Audiology. The researchers pooled together data on auditory complications of COVID-19 patients and estimated that:

WEALTH CREEP? - You need to think about your Will If like many Australians you don’t think of yourself as particularly wealthy, you may need to think again. Post-World War II prosperity and economic growth coupled with more recent gains on the value of real estate has resulted in Australia being on the cusp of an unprecedented intergenerational wealth transfer.

There is only one sure way for us to specify how we would like our assets and items of personal value to be distributed after we have gone and that is by way of a properly constructed Will. Rather than a burden, our Will presents an opportunity for each of us to state our wishes for a dignified and respectful passing of our assets to our loved ones, to our favourite charities, to the people we wish to gift, rather than to those who are not part of our close network.

With a tendency to underestimate the value of the family home as well as relatively large sums which have been steadily accumulating in superannuation funds, there are many Australians who are simply unprepared for the inevitable consequence of life – death! And, particularly as that death will often come at a time not necessarily of our choosing. In fact, nearly half of adult Australians die without having made a Will.

A valid Will also assists in avoiding costly and sometimes stressful complication at a time when our family is dealing with grief and in gathering relatives and friends together.

Partly because among many older Australians there is a reluctance to openly discuss topics such as wealth, salary and bonuses, inheritances, etc., many of us mistakenly believe that our families will be able to take care of our assets after we have gone. Sadly, this is not the case and neglect of leaving a clear directive can lead to unintended consequences, including acrimony and additional grief.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T WRITE A WILL?

If you pass away or lose your mental capacity without writing your Will, you will be considered to have died ‘intestate’. Your next of kin will be obliged to obtain a formal Authority from the Court to distribute your estate. Your assets are distributed according to a prescribed formula set out under current legislation. This can be an impersonal, time-consuming and distressing process, with little or no attention given to anecdotal wishes that you may have expressed to various family members and friends. A tip to the wise. Do not download a Will from the internet and think that it will protect you and your loved ones. It is most important that your Will is drafted correctly by a qualified lawyer so as to avoid unintended

consequences such as dispossessed spouses or children of a deceased beneficiary, double gifting or failing of a gift or unintended taxation burdens on the beneficiary.

‘GREEN’ BUILDINGS FINANCING TO FORM PART OF 2030 ZERO EMISSIONS GOAL Waverley Council has brought forward its net zero carbon emissions pledge to 2030 and is looking at strategies for helping building owners play a more active role in reaching that goal.

The new zero emissions target was announced by Mayor Paula Masselos (pictured right), who said the previous net zero carbon emissions target date was 2050 but Council recognised that “urgent action was required now to help keep increases in global temperatures to a minimum.” She said Council will be able to meet the new target with a raft of measures including purchasing 100% renewable energy, phasing out gas and switching to electric and hybrid vehicles. Although the Council may be well on track to meet its target, the community lags behind. A report tabled at a full meeting of Council said: “While Council achieved its 2020 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) targets for its own operations, the community 2020 GHG target has not been met and there is significant work to deliver on these and future commitments.” Costs were a barrier to ‘greener’ buildings, the report said.

The report outlined a financing scheme to help private building owners make a greater contribution through Environmental Upgrade Agreements (EUSs). These are a mechanism that allows building owners to repay a loan for upgrades through a local council charge on the land. The report said implementing an upgrade agreements plan would “fill a gap in Council’s programs to reduce community GHG emissions.”

Such agreements would act as incentive for building owners to reduce their carbon footprint through solar panels, insulation, energy efficient lighting and other measures. The agreements could attract businesses of all sizes, even act as a carrot for new businesses establishing themselves in the Waverley LGA. The report said Council could either run an Environmental Upgrade Agreements program in-house or appoint a third-party administration provider. “Blacktown, Newcastle, North Sydney, City of Parramatta and City of Sydney Councils self-administer Environmental Upgrade Agreements,” the report stated. If, on the other hand, the work was farmed out, Council could use the services of Better Building Finance. This company is currently the only third-party administration provider working in NSW, running programs for Forbes Shire Council, Kyogle Council, Lane Cove

Municipal Council and Lake Macquarie City Council. Councillors approved a recommendation to trial the scheme for two years using a third party administrator. In other environment news, Waverley Council has just come up with an updated Biodiversity Action Plan, which protects native vegetation at 13 coastal parks and reserves. Introduced in 2015, the program has increased overall populations of native plant species by 50%. At one such location, High Bamford Reserve in North Bondi, more than

two dozen ‘remnant’ native species had been identified, Council reports in its draft Biodiversity Action Plan 2021-2030. These include different types of bottlebrush, banksia, wattle and an interestingly-named native grass species known as Spreading Panic (Paspalidium distans). “By improving the remnant vegetation condition it will make the bushland more resilient to climate change,” the document states. Councillors agreed to place the draft Biodiversity Action Plan 2021-2030 on public display for 28 days. Tony Maguire

year). Everything is clean, new and bright and as always, family and food are a big part of any Jewish festival and indeed, Jewish life in general.

Rosh Hashana is one of the holiest festivals in the Jewish calendar. It is said to be the day that G-d created the world. It is a time to reflect the year just past and to look towards the coming year with positivity and hope, particularly in these uncertain times. Rosh Hashana is held on the first and second days of the month of Tishri (Sept 6 -8, 2021) and it begins the ten days of penitence to Yom Kippur (Sept 15-16, 2021)(Day of Atonement)(where Jews repent for any wrong doings and pray to be inscribed in the book of Life for the coming year. The Shofar (Rams horn) is traditionally blown as a call to repentance between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. It is blown using a series of particular notes and is extremely difficult to do. The sound of the Shofar has always held great significance for me and I find listening to it being blown, both spiritual and uplifting. The familiar greeting between family, friends and congregants is L’Shana Tova (a good

Traditional Jewish foods are usually served on Rosh Hashana. Such as Chopped Liver, Gefilte fish, Herring, Chicken soup with Matzo balls, Brisket etc. However, sweet foods also play a significant part during Rosh Hashana. They are a symbol of hope for a sweet, happy and prosperous year ahead. Even the Challah (platted bread served on a Friday night) is different in both shape and taste for Rosh Hashana. During the Rosh Hashana period, the Challah is round (signifying the cycled nature of life) and is baked with sultanas or raisons to add sweetness to the bread. Apples, some say, represent the garden of Eden or that ancient Jews said they had healing powers. Nonetheless, the combination of eating sweet apples dipped in honey represent a sweet year. Honey cake is also a Rosh Hashana tradition. It is mainly served by Ashkenazi Jews as yet again, a symbol of hope, for a sweet, happy and prosperous New year. It’s a favourite in my household for Rosh Hashana or any Chagim (festival) as its simply delicious. This recipe was given to me by an old friend many years ago. It never lets me down. I hope you enjoy it. Wishing everyone Chag Sameach (happy festival) and L’Shana Tova. May everyone from all walks of life, be inscribed in the Book of life and may the year ahead bring you good health, happiness, prosperity and love.

EXPERIENCING COVID-19: A UK STORY

In 2020, the first year of the pandemic, I carefully self-isolated as I am diabetic and therefore more vulnerable. Fast forward a year, I had been double vaccinated by May 2021 which made me feel so much more protected. (A close friend was very keen to get her vaccination and for me to get mine, telling me she had every confidence in the vaccine.) When my family and I all caught the virus at the beginning of August 2021, we isolated at home together. I am 69 this year, my daughter 31 and her partner 33; out of the three of us, I had the mildest symptoms due, no doubt, to being double vaccinated. During my recovery I was able to work on my computer during the mornings then napped in the afternoons to heal. My symptoms included loss of smell, aches & pains in my feet and muscles, pains in my calves and thighs, a dry cough, cold shivers but no temperature. However, both my daughter and partner had temperatures and felt really poorly with symptoms similar to mine, with much shivering, then fever and sleeping a lot more than I did! We have all recovered now, and back to our usual daily lives thankfully, abnormal tiredness being the last symptom to go. Not such an easy Covid experience for 81 year old Lil, my best friend’s mother-in-law. Falling out of a taxi on a shopping trip was the first symptom that all was not right for Lil, who is unvaccinated and diabetic. Lil later tested positive for Covid-19 which she had caught from her unvaccinated housemate daughter, Janet. Lil was shipped off to her other daughter Susan to be looked after whilst poor Janet was admitted to hospital twice.

The Gibson family Lil was very poorly indeed, suffering breathing difficulties, terrible chest pains & her diabetic readings severely affected. Susan had to stay up two nights to feed her mother every two hours to keep her glucose above danger levels. In fact, the family were scared they would lose her and Lil herself thought she had died, as she remembered dreaming that she was walking in a field with her late husband. I am very pleased to report that Lil did survive and against all odds is now thriving.

Whilst waiting for my first vaccination date to arrive, I remember thinking about the success of the polio vaccines which have eliminated polio from most of the world, with only 33 reported cases in 2018. I feel very grateful to the scientists and doctors who have undoubtedly worked very hard to produce Covid-19 vaccines in such a short time. Lindy Gibson

INCINERATOR PLAN CAUSING ALARM

A proposal by one of Sydney’s biggest waste disposal companies to burn their rubbish at a Matraville paper mill has locals up in arms - and they have a warning for greater Sydney. Ask anybody what they love about Matraville and the answer is usually the community. It’s a tight-knit area full of families, kindergartens and a vibrant town centre. “I call this area the hub of the universe. Where else would I want to live, everything is so close,” says former test cricketer and TV personality Mike Whitney.

Mike grew up in Patterson Street and says he’s seen the area change for the better. “It was just such a wonderful place to grow up. But what we didn’t know back in those days was that we were actually living in a very toxic environment. There was an oil refinery, the Bunnerong Power Station, a papermill, a chemical factory called ICI and we didn’t realise it but there were heavy pollutants in the area.” Fast forward a few decades and things are very different. The power station and old Hurley Crescent incinerator are gone, the residential population has increased significantly and governments at all levels have invested in cleaning up the area. “But when I heard they wanted to build an incinerator in the area I couldn’t believe it,” says Whitney. “Isn’t it a backward step? Isn’t it going back to where we were decades ago instead of moving forward?” In 2019 waste company Suez teamed up with the Opal paper mill (formerly Orora) on Botany Road and lodged a proposal with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to build an incinerator. Their plan is to burn 165,000 tonnes of waste a year at the Matraville paper mill trucked in from western Sydney tips to create energy to help power the mill. The proposal is classified as State Significant meaning it has been taken out of the hands of Randwick Council and will be determined by the State Government. The plan is still current and it’s suspected that Suez will lodge an Environmental Impact Statement to progress the application this year. Not surprisingly, it’s got Randwick Mayor Danny Said concerned. “The community here is more like a country town, everyone knows each other," he says. "Over the years the industrial nature has changed and this has helped the area’s sense of community shine. “This community does not deserve a 17storey high stack – as high as the Sydney Opera House – belting out fumes 24/7. The community does not want it and it just does not make sense,” says Mayor Said.

Mayor Danny Said and Chris Hanson from No More Incinerators community group. It’s a view shared by many others in the community too, including all three levels of government representatives from Mayor Danny Said to State Member Michael Daley and Federal Member Matt Thistlethwaite. A resident action group called No More Incinerators has started up and is actively opposing the plan. The group is headed by Little Bay resident and chemical engineer Chris Hanson. Chris has spent most of his working life trying to clean up the pollution created by heavy industry at Port Botany. “I was in Noel’s chemist shop at Matraville recently and he showed me a flyer about this incinerator plan. I took one look at it and thought ‘here we go again’. We’ve just cleaned up the area and we’re going to start all over again.” From there Chris started the No More Incinerators group and is working closely with the Matraville Precinct. “The most important message I want to get out to people is that this is going to affect all of Randwick City, not just Matraville. Even though it is a ‘modern’ incinerator where things are filtered out, pollutants are still present and we’re going to be exposed to them 24/7.” Chris says the incinerator will burn selected waste (what Suez calls ‘processed engineered fuels’) which is basically processed waste from residential kerbside clean-ups and other nonrecyclable waste including plastic, tapes and straps from the paper mill. He says when these materials are burnt, they emit dangerous dioxins into the environment which can be breathed in and enter people’s bloodstream where they do not break down1. Overseas studies have found that dioxins found in chicken eggs and breast milk have been linked with birth defects2. And all this is being burnt just 130 metres from people’s homes which has got locals upset. The Pollak family from Matraville are among thousands who will be affected. Mike and Amanda Pollak who live with their two children on Australia Avenue say it’s mind boggling to think the proposal could even be considered. “What I don’t get is it’s not just our area, it’s going to affect the whole Sydney basin,” says Mike. “I’m asthmatic as well, so I can’t imagine what it’s going to do to me once it goes up, I am very scared,” says Amanda. “Think of our kids, we don’t want them growing up in this area if this is what’s going to be built there.” There are approximately 5,000 people who live within one kilometre of the proposed site and over half a million people living within a 10-kilometre radius.

Paving the Way Randwick Council has announced a new commitment to begin using recycled glass as a substitute for sand when laying new roads and footpaths. They will join forces with 15 other Sydney Councils to drive a new age of sustainable road making as part of the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) Procure Recycled: Paving the Way initiative. Paving the Way is expected to recycle more than 80 million glass bottles per year back into local roads, which will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will be equivalent to planting 14,000 trees per year. While most kerbside glass is currently recycled back into bottles, Paving the Way will locally recycle all remaining glass that’s not fit for making bottles. By working with other councils, Paving the Way is stimulating end markets for recycled glass while supporting local jobs as well as the development of essential recycling infrastructure in the region. Last year, Randwick Council trialled using crushed glass on streets in Randwick and Maroubra. The roads have been a success with the glass comparable in wear, lifespan, and flexibility to sand roads.

“Randwick Council is excited to be at the forefront of this initiative. Prioritising sustainability and the environment, while stimulating local jobs and manufacturing is a no-brainer,” says Mayor Danny Said. “We look forward to building more roads and footpaths in Randwick City as we do our very best to make sure that every single item put in the recycling yellow-lidded bin continues to serve as a resource in our community.” The Councils participating in Paving the Way include Bayside, Burwood, Canada Bay, Canterbury-Bankstown,City of Sydney, Georges River, Hornsby, Inner West, Lane Cove, Northern Beaches, Randwick, Ryde, Sutherland, Waverley, Willoughby and Woollahra.

A brain workout for kids

Have you ever noticed that young children are often more transfixed by the box or the wrapping a present came in than the actual gift? Or perhaps as a child you enjoyed the magic of cubby building using sheets, pillows, and all manner of household items that you could scavenge. This is an example of the wonder and allure of “loose parts”. In short, loose parts are everyday objects both in nature or manmade that children can manipulate and reconfigure through their play. Nature with it all its leaves, dirt and rocks is a space filled with loose parts where we see leaves turned into imaginary fish and mud turned into cakes. Perhaps the best example of loose parts is found at the beach. Sand, water, rocks, shells, seaweed… all able to be used and manipulated by children in their play. Your own home can also be a source of loose parts. For those of us going wild with home delivery there should be no shortage of boxes now!! But take a look at the items in your kitchen cupboards and recycling bins– the Tupperware, the cupcake tins, the cardboard rolls, milk crates and fabric remnants. All of these items can be added to children’s arsenal of toy props… and help them get the brain workout that will have long term benefits!! When children have the opportunity to play with everyday objects and use them as part of their play, they are able to exercise their imagination, curiosity and problem solving skills. This drives innovation and creativity.

In prehistoric times being able to solve problems is what kept us alive. It was equal to eating and mating. Today our brains can often be starved of that challenge and loose parts play provides children with an opportunity to exercise both hemispheres of their brain – the creative side and the analytical side. A simple cubby building experience with household items can be a brain workout on its own as children need to make assumptions on what they can use, plan how they will use it, strategize, problem solve and use visual and spatial reasoning. The “Aha” moment that a child experiences each time they find a solution to a challenge has been shown in research to facilitate long term memory storage and reinforcement. In addition, the chemical dopamine released in the brain when children experience joy and satisfaction, motivates curiosity to learn as it rewards the problem solving undertaken in the experience. Loose parts play really is a total brain workout!! So, what are you waiting for? Turn your trash into brain treasure and let children loose in nature for a brain boost. Loose parts play might just become your family’s Lockdown highlight! Carols & NYE fireworks cancelled due to COVID The Coogee Carols and Coogee Sparkles NYE fireworks have been cancelled for a second consecutive year.

Randwick City Councillors met online in August 2021 for their ordinary council meeting and made the difficult decision to cancel the events due to the ongoing lockdown and pandemic uncertainty. As an alternative to the traditional public events, Council will instead host a range of summer activations spread across Randwick City town centres similar to 2020.

The activations may include a Christmas lights trail, roaming entertainment, pop-up buskers, public art installations, tree wrappings, chalk art and Christmas decorations. Council is also investigating the feasibility of holding smaller village carols. “Unfortunately it’s not likely we’re going to be able to present Coogee’s famous carols and fireworks events again this year,” Mayor Danny Said explains. “The uncertainty around what restrictions may be in place in the coming months and the significant planning required to produce these events, means we’ve had to make this tough decision now.

“However, I’m really looking forward to the return of our summer activation and Christmas program which last year brought a little bit of joy and cheer across our town centres. “Last year we had classic Christmas window displays in Kensington, fairy lights in trees at Matraville and Coogee and public artwork such as a giant melting icecream cone at Clovelly,” reflected Mayor Said. Council also resolved to cancel the Seniors Christmas Concerts and Kingsford Night Noodle Markets which is traditionally held in November. Grant funding usually provided to help host the Matraville Christmas Carols will be diverted to support decorations and activations in  Matraville town centre.

Call for upgrade of Mall

Three Liberal councillors are urging a revitalisation of Bondi Junction’s Oxford Street Mall, calling on Council to provide staff and resources to give the pedestrian thoroughfare a serious makeover.

Former Mayor Sally Betts and fellow-Liberals Angela Burrill and Tony Kay put forward a motion whereby plans to refurbish the Mall would be brought forward. The upgrade should start with replacement of shade structures. They said the Mall “is looking very tired and overdue for an upgrade.” The three believe the ailing precinct would spring back to life if Council gave it the necessary facelift. “With access to the bus and rail interchange and proximity to Westfield shopping centre, Oxford Street Mall is the natural open-air shopping, dining and cultural centre of Bondi Junction,” they stated in their motion. “Over 50,000 people pass through the Mall every day, so to beautify and invigorate this area should be a priority.” However, the motion was defeated and it looks as though the community will have to wait another three years for the mall’s makeover. Sharon Cassidy, Acting Director, Community, Assets and Operations noted that the Mall was upgraded in 2004 and will not be due for another upgrade until 2024. In the meantime, replacement of shade sails and other routine maintenance is covered under an existing budget of $1 million a year.

No immediate remedy for beach short cut chaos Bad news for residents of Boonara Avenue, Bondi – Transport for NSW has rejected Waverley Council’s request for a ‘No Right Turn’ sign to prevent drivers taking a short cut to the beach.

You can use it to place requests for: • Waste and recycling pick-ups • Street cleaning • Tree management • Road and footpath maintenance • Free e-waste collection • Payments for some services Plus much more. Visit the App Store or Google Play to download.

Kingsford and Kensington are top rubbish dumping locations

Kingsford and Kensington are the biggest dumping grounds for illegal rubbish in the Randwick Local Government Area.

Houston Road, Kingsford has the dubious distinction of being the most popular location for dumpers. Randwick Council responded to 323 requests to remove illegal rubbish from its footpaths and verges in the 2020-21 financial year. In second place is Kingsford Meeks Street, with 290 requests, while Boronia Street, Kensington, came third with 217 requests. The figures were revealed in a report by to Council on the feasibility of using mobile closed circuit TV cameras to deter and catch illegal rubbish dumpers. These would be rotated around different locations. “Council has identified Houston Road as the initial location for this technology to be utilised to address ongoing illegal dumped rubbish in the west ward,” said the report from Mark Bush, Manager Waste and Cleaning Services. The cameras would be operated under an agreement with the NSW Environment Department’s Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) squad program. One of the RID team’s trailer-mounted, solar powered CCTV units has recently been trialled in Wassel Street, Matraville – described in Mr Bush’s report as another “hot spot for illegally dumped household clean up waste.”

Cnr Bondi Rd and Boonara Ave Residents had petitioned the Council, citing “many near-misses, aggressive driving and serious congestion” as motorists turned right from Boonara Ave into Bondi Road. The Council called on TfNSW to ban right turns at the problem intersection. But the state government authority said ‘no,’ saying the move would only shift the problem to the intersection of Imperial Avenue and Bondi Road. It has suggested Waverley Council submit a fresh application to prohibit right turns at both intersections. Council officers will now investigate this option.

An urgent meeting of Council’s Environment Committee will now be held “to assess the likely impact of the proposal on the ecology of Botany Bay and to report back with recommendations to Council.” Active involvement will be sought from recreational fishing bodies, UNSW ecologists and local stakeholders including the La Perouse Aboriginal Land Council and La Perouse Precinct Committee.
