WEATHER INCLEMENT
At his height he controlled an army of over 1 million soldiers recruited from throughout Europe. It is a salutary lesson in what a determined autocrat can achieve in as little as 20 years. His failed invasion of Russia began his decline and has been put down to hubris, extended supply lines, and an unusually bad 1812 winter. As well as his loss in the east Napoleon lost the battle of Waterloo in June 1815 in the west. In the same year the world’s largest eruption in recorded human history took place in Indonesia, costing 71,000 lives. Still emerging from the “Little Ice Age”, Europe experienced low temperatures, heavy rains, failed harvests and sharply rising food prices. These caused food riots and the highest levels of violence since the French Revolution. In Paris the Provisional Government demanded that Napoleon abdicate, and he did so on June 22, 1815. Bad weather was again part of his downfall.

collapse from one cause, but become less resilient over time, then can’t survive changes to their environment. He shows how the change from the “Medieval Warming” to the “Little Ice Age” contributed to the collapse of both Greenland and the Angkor kingdom, the first through cold and the second through drought. The Angkor kingdom built the world’s largest ever religious structure, Angkor Wat.

With a temperature of 47.8°C in Richmond in 1939, snow in Hyde Park, Sydney on June 28, 1836, and now weeks of torrential East Coast rain, it is certain that weather is fickle. But since 1,000 AD there have both warmer and cooler periods lasting hundreds of years so we must be careful how we interpret changes taking place over a few decades. We must also thank our SES, Fire Service and health system for the help we get in emergencies.

There have been five major ice ages in the Earth’s history, the first being about 2 billion years ago and the latest starting about 2.5 million years ago. Within each ice age are glacial periods when ice advances and retreats. Within our current ice age the last glacial period ended about 11,700 years ago and weather has been gradually warming. The “Little Ice Age” was a blip between about 1,300 and 1,850 AD – Before that was another blip called the “Medieval Warming” from about 950 to 1250 AD. During these times populations adapted. People skated on the Thames in cold times and grew vines in London in warm times.

WORKING BAYS OF THE EAST DOUBLE BAY - PART 4
Claire Crichton and Merren Davies
Double Bay is a small but fantastic and naturally protected bay suitable for all sorts of maritime activities. It's high hills surrounding and protect it from all but the most ferocious of northerly winds and its relatively deep and sandy bottom make it very appealing to mariners. It’s been used as a fair and foul weather anchorage for large and small shipping for hundreds of years. In years gone by the steep valley leading to Edgecliff would also have funnelled lots of water down through the temperate rainforests that were originally there, into the bay carrying nutrients and food to the aquatic life. It must have been an extremely fertile environment for all sorts of fishing and food gathering by the indigenous people. Unknown to many, commercial fishing took place in Sydney harbour right up until the late 90’s and over the years many of the prawn trawlers and other commercial fishing boats have been moored in Double Bay long term and temporarily during foul weather, when skippers would move their vessels into the bay until the storms had passed. There are many famous names associated with the Bay, One of them is the Messenger Family and in particular ’Boy’ Messenger who had the original boatshed and provided shipwrighting and vessel maintenance during the mid 20th century.
The Double Bay Marina was one of two official facilities that once existed with the second being located just east of the sailing clubs. Both had slipways that could accommodate fairly large vessels, but were restricted in draft as the bay has a history of sandbars and sand flats close to shore which inhibited the larger boats from being bought out of the water for maintenance. Although most are long gone quite a few of the waterfront houses also had their own small sheds and slipways to cater for their personal marine maintenance requirements. The ferry wharf was also a central part of life in the bay for many years and was used for passenger and small localised commercial cargos. Today the Double Bay Marina, the ferry service and the Double Bay Sailing and 18 Footers Club are still carrying the torch for both commercial and recreational use of the bay. During race season you can often see the sailors rigging up their boats and getting ready to go out racing. The current fleets sailed from the clubs are Lasers and 18 Footers and both clubs are always looking for new members. Whether you’re an old salt or just looking to find your sea legs or sailing, kayaking, swimming in Murray Rose Pool, or just watching the gulls fly by, none can argue Double Bay is a great place to enjoy the water. Chris Ellard

A TRIBUTE TO THE
NIELSEN PARK REGULARS - PART FOUR
NEWS 7
DAVE SHARMA
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH
Our NP Regulars group is now in excess of 100 members and is quite a strong (unincorporated) community group. It consists of; men and women, single and married, young and not-so-young, of all backgrounds, religions, professions and ethnicities.
Mayor Susan Wynne says a few nice words about the importance of local communities, and how our community is a good example of that. The meal is then served, followed by one of the invites assisting me in presenting a few awards. Some awards are humorous, others serious. I like to publicly acknowledge the oldest Regulars who still swim regularly, or, who have helped others, who have overcome a serious health issue, or who, although physically handicapped, still battle to come for a regular swim, or, who have achieved some swimming feat, or, who was most generous in bringing a ‘Plate + Bubbles’ to our fairly regular early morning birthday celebrations for elderly members. After the awards I make a short serious speech about our little community and how “Dr Nielsen” is so beneficial to all of us, as we get older: Healthy gentle exercise (everyone swims to their own ‘regime’): an idyllic setting, and plenty of happy social interaction, which (apart from a healthy diet) are the most important things in keeping us physically and mentally healthy and better able “to keep the old man out.” I then tell a couple of jokes, to preserve the relaxed ambiance, and we wind up the evening about 8.30pm. In 2018, without the assistance of our councillors, we didn’t receive a Council Community Grant. We mentioned this point to our two supportive Councillors, and in 2019 we received a $3,000 Community Grant. This allowed us to have two subsidised dinners, a ‘Summer Kick-Off Dinner” in late September 2019 (held in the Kiosk and attended by 76 Regulars). But our regular end-of-season dinner which was organised for the last Sunday in March 2020 was cancelled due to COVID 19 social separation rules.)
Some are holocaust survivors, doctors, lawyers, husbands, housewives, retirees, widows, bachelors, widowers, businessmen etc... Although it creates a fair amount of work, I get a nice sense of satisfaction of ‘putting back,’ and I'm helped by several members whenever I need it. Over the past couple of years, a group of them have, several times, “awarded” me with very nice beach type gifts for the “glue” I provide to the group. I think what I like most about the NP Regulars (and I believe this feeling is shared by others) is the pleasantness of the wonderfully obliging kiosk staff (led by Stefanus Kwee); The eclectic nature of the NP Regulars; the happy, spontaneous welcome we give each other in the mornings; the genuine caring, and looking out for each other; the friendly ‘ribbing’ that happens between most of us, the common view that most of us have on the ‘issues of the day’, and the relaxed banter that occurs during coffee, after the ‘feel good’ endorphins have kicked in following the healthy swim. Since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020 all our lives have been disrupted in a whole variety of ways. But (perhaps surprisingly) we have been able to, more-or-less, maintain some of our usual morning swim activities but not, of course, the large dinners and social gatherings. In April 2022, the reconstruction of the century-old Nielsen Park Seawall (badly damaged in the 2017 winter storm) will be demolished and reconstructed to be roughly the same, but complying with modern safety norms. The winter swims of 2022 will be badly interrupted by that project. Long may “The NPRs” survive and thrive. Bruce Bland

A DANGEROUS AND UNCERTAIN TIME FOR GLOBAL PEACE AND SECURITY Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a shocking and abominable action.
Military aggression on this scale has not been witnessed in Europe since WWII. Russia’s illegal and unjustified invasion has led to the tragic loss of civilian lives and forcibly displaced more than 4.5 million people. This conflict will continue to have a direct impact on Australia. It will disrupt global financial and energy markets, strain supply chains, and put at risk the post-pandemic global economic recovery. Russia’s use of force to occupy the sovereign territory of another nation is a threat to global peace and stability, including in our own region. Other major powers, including our neighbours, will be closely watching the west’s response to this Russian aggression, and learning from it. This is why it was so important that Australia play its part in responding forcefully to Russia’s naked challenge to world order. I’ve been in continuous discussions with my colleagues in the government about how Australia should respond to this crisis, offering advice based on my two decades of experience as an Australian diplomat. I’ve also been in regular contact with Ukraine’s senior diplomats stationed in Australia, as well as our overseas diplomatic missions. Ukraine’s need for military assistance and humanitarian aid remains urgent and ongoing. Australia, along with our allies and other NATO countries are meeting these needs. Australia has just announced an additional $21 million support package of defensive military assistance for Ukrainian Armed Forces, which will bring Australia’s total military assistance so far to $91 million. After an urgent request from the Ukrainian Government, Australia, will be donating at least 70,000 tonnes of thermal coal. This assistance will help the Ukrainian people
keep the lights on, their homes heated, and the factories running during such a difficult time. Australia has so far committed to $65 million in emergency humanitarian assistance. The most recent aid package focuses on supporting those most vulnerable during conflict, women, children, the elderly and the disabled. Australia stands ready to respond generously to any resettlement needs stemming from this conflict. To help Ukrainians forced to flee from Russia’s military invasion, we have made available a humanitarian visa to Ukrainians. This visa will be valid for three years and allow people to work, study and access Medicare. Further, all Ukrainian nationals in Australia will be provided with an automatic extension to any expiring visas. So far, we have issued over 5,000 visas to Ukrainians fleeing the conflict. We have also imposed an immediate ban on Australian exports of alumina and aluminium ores to Russia, limiting its capacity to produce aluminium, a critical alloy in armaments production. Australia has announced a total of 476 sanctions against more than 400 individuals, many of whom are key Russian officials, and more than 30 entities, including most of Russia’s banking sector and those entities that are responsible for Russia’s sovereign debt. I recommended that Australia refer Russia to the International Criminal Court for possible war crimes investigations, a suggestion the Foreign Minister has now taken up. The courage of Ukraine’s leadership and its people in standing up so bravely to Russia’s onslaught is to be commended, and they deserve all our support. This is a dangerous and uncertain time for global peace and stability.

THE BUILDERS OF
MODERN AUSTRALIA
In our concluding article on John Hubert Plunkett, we will further examine the significant effect his personal beliefs had on shaping Australian society.
JOHN HUBERT PLUNKETT – PART THREE John Hubert Plunkett was implacably opposed to discrimination arising from sectarianism and with the support of Governor Richard Bourke was able to ensure that Australia was to have a vibrant secular education and health sector free from excessive sectarian discrimination.
Starting with drafting and legislating the NSW Church Act 1836 which allowed for the state to support all major Christian denominations Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian (and later Methodist), he was able to effectively dis-establish the Church of England in Australia from the state. This made NSW unique from Great Britain and was a significant advancement of secularisation and liberalism. Importantly, it reflected the spiritual needs of all the population, particularly Irish Catholics and emancipists.

Bourke and Plunkett also tried to introduce a National Board of Education model of secular schools as implemented in Ireland, but it took many years for this to be realised. Plunkett continued the good fight with successive governors and was eventually appointed the Chairman of the National Education Board in 1848. In this capacity he was to mould not only today’s public primary and secondary school system, but also advance the establishment of the University of Sydney with WC Wentworth and Charles Nicholson. In the domain of Health, Plunkett was highly supportive of the Sisters of Charity establishing a hospital in Sydney and with his active support he helped the order acquire Tarmons in Potts Point as the first site of a 22 bed St Vincent’s Hospital from Dr Nicholson. We are aware that John Hubert was on very good terms with Dr Nicholson (an early trustee of St Mark's) who personally donated £1,000 to the Sisters. Plunkett fought tirelessly in every aspect of his public life to ensure that sectarianism and discrimination were minimised and proved time and time again that his principles could not be

St Mark’s Church window where John Plunkett is recognised compromised, even against his beloved Catholic Church. One particular instance, described by Sister Moira O’Sullivan (RSC) in her fascinating book, A Cause of Trouble? detailing the travails of the Sisters of Charity in Australia when setting up St Vincent’s Hospital and their schooling system, points to the man’s highly principled stance. Called the “Bibles Incident”, when a visiting priest demanded that Protestant Bibles be removed from the hospital, Plunkett summarily resigned as a Trustee and Honorary Treasurer, rather than accept a compromise to the principle of St Vincent’s providing a non-denominational service to the community. In a lifetime of service to his principles, Plunkett’s influence on the formation of Australian democracy was so amazing that it is rather sad that he is not better recognised and honoured. It is important to note that Mark Tedeschi QC considered that John Hubert Plunkett’s vision for Australia in those years “is akin to the vision of America advocated by Dr Martin Luther King Jr; ‘equal opportunities in education, health, recreation, and similar public services; the right to vote; equality before the law’.” High praise, indeed, considering that Plunkett was born 127 years before the good doctor. St Mark's has always been an open church and there are many instances where Catholic families have shared communion in our church. We are greatly pleased that John Hubert Plunkett is remembered in our windows, no matter how indirectly. Elizabeth Bay had been the site of a fishing village established by Governor Macquarie in 1815 for a composite group of Cadigal people (the indigenous inhabitants of the area surrounding Sydney Harbour) under the leadership of Bungaree. It was named in honour of Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s wife, Elizabeth.

I begin my walk at Beare Reserve, originally Elizabeth Bay Reserve. It was named Beare Reserve in 1888 after John Beare, Alderman from 1881 to 1899. Apartment building Oceana is dominant at the edge of the park. Designed by Theodore Fry (1908-1959) and completed 1961. It was one of the first modern, high-rise apartment blocks to appear on the Elizabeth Bay skyline in the early 1960s.

At No. 97 is Tresco, a two-storey home designed by Thomas Rowe and built in 1868. It was constructed by Italian stonemasons who were brought to Australia by the Joubert brothers, who were prominent in the early settlement of Hunters Hill. In 1913 it became the official residence of the Flag Officer in Charge, Royal Australian Navy, Eastern Australia.
No. 110 EB Rd is Deepdene, is a modern apartment, which has a distinctive curved tower that was designed by architect Stuart Murray in the early 1970s. It is inspired by the Einstein Tower in Potsdam, Germany, and was entirely owned by the Twynam Agricultural Group founder until 2017.

THE EMPORER is the Tarot Card for ARIES This card features THE EMPORER seated on a cubic throne giving the impression of worldly powers and leadership. You are strong and sometimes stubborn but can give good advice and help to others particularly in business. You are dedicated to your plan and will not accept the suggestions of others. You are very good on all business levels but tend sometimes to be impulsive and not go about things in a practical way. As your symbol is the Ram try not to headbutt your way to good fortune instead of taking time and having patience. Show your understanding and encourage people with love rather than demands.
At No. 71, Adereham Hall, is a nine-storey, 35 metre high apartment block completed in 1934 by Davie and Greenwood, builders, and designed by architects, Gordon McKinnon and Sons. It replaced a grand 19th century mansion, Rockley, a verandahed stone house with its luxurious gardens and vistas. It has been nick-named “Gotham City’’, a reference to its neo-Gothic Manhattan 1920 and 30s style. The famous Australian actor, Geoffrey Rush, was a previous penthouse resident.
At No. 6 Billyard Ave are the Art Deco Edgewater apartments which were built in 1937.
Talking & Teaching Tarot It's been a long strange road for all of us never knowing what the next week will bring. I feel we are now able to feel safe and happy and enjoy our days in our beautiful city.
Ashton at No. 102, was designed by Thomas Rowe in the Victorian Italianate style and built c. 1875. It was originally part of a group of villas built for well-off clients who included Thomas Rowe, John Grafton Ross, Charles Henry Hoskins and Sir Cecil Harold Hoskins.
Boomerang is another building by the park. Designed by Neville Hampson in 1926 for Frank Albert, a music publisher. This Hollywood Spanish Mission style dwelling old for A$20.7 million in 2005 to Lindsay Fox, and has been used as a backdrop for Hollywood films, including Mission: Impossible 2. I head down Billyard Ave to No.18 -18a, is Edgerley a heritage-listed residence. The property is owned by interests associated with the Paspaley family. Edgerley is also significant through its association with poet, Kenneth Slessor, who lived there for a period in the 1930s.

Alexander Macleay (1767–1848), the Colonial Secretary of NSW was granted 54 acres in Elizabeth Bay in 1828 and he commissioned architect John Verge (1788–1861) to build Elizabeth Bay House, a Regency style home that was completed in 1837. The grotto and retaining walls were designed by Verge and the carriage drive on Onslow Ave was designed by Edward Deas Thomson and built from 1832 to 1835 by convict and free artisans under the direction of Verge.
I head down Rosyln Gardens and left into Waratah St to Reg Bartley Oval, in Rushcutters Bay Park. The oval was completed and fenced by 1889, and the original grandstand was built by 1894 on the north side of the oval. In 1926 another grandstand was built, which was damaged by fires in 1956 and 1957. The oval was named in 1959 in recognition of Reg Bartley's 18 years as alderman and five as Lord Mayor.

BURNS BRIGHT IN MAROUBRA Anzac celebrations are starting early in Maroubra, with a march and commemoration ceremony on Sunday April 10. Starting at 11am, ex-service personnel and other community members will march from the corner of Garden St and Maroubra Rd. At the cenotaph opposite Souths Juniors, there will be speeches remembering our war heroes. Then on the actual day when we honour our service personnel, Monday April 25, there will be a dawn service at the cenotaph, commencing 4.30. All are welcome to both events.
consisting of 2/14th, 2/16th and 2/27th Battalions who had previously seen action in the Middle East.
Focus of this year’s celebrations is the bravery of ‘Maroubra Force’ in the jungle on the Kokoda Track and the northern region of New Guinea during 1942-43. Maroubra Force, initially an ad hoc force consisting of the Papuan Infantry Battalion, the 39th Infantry Battalion and the 53rd Infantry Battalion, was reinforced as the Japanese onslaught continued. These additional personnel had valuable combat experience – they were members of the 7th Division’s 21st Brigade,
While the war against Japan continued until August 1945, there is little doubt that the actions of Maroubra Force played a significant role in thwarting that country’s plans to invade Australia.
“Some have referred to the actions of Maroubra Force as the Battle for Australia while others, seeing the bedraggled remnants of the Force, referred to them as ‘Those Ragged Bloody Heroes,’ said Maroubra RSL sub-Branch president Colin Flatters, seen (right in pic) with other sub-branch committee members. Despite enormous Australian casualties, the Japanese logistic support was over stretched and the allied forces finally prevailed in this phase of operations against Japan.
Colin said: “Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch remembers and pays tribute to all our brave men and women who served in all theatres of war, but this year in particular we focus on the 80th Anniversary of the formation of the

He said the bravery of Maroubra Force members was underscored by the Australian casualty list in actions on the Kokoda Track – approximately 600 killed and 1600 wounded. Total Australian casualties during WWII are estimated at 27 000 killed and 23 000 wounded. “On these statistics alone, it doesn’t take very much thought to realise that we owe our WWII Veterans and their families’ an enormous debt and respect for their sacrifice,” Colin said. The commemorations at the April 10 event will involve local schools and other community groups who will lay wreaths in honour of our war heroes. Thus, the youngest members of
our community will pay tribute to the bravery of previous generations – and as they see the names of fallen service personnel from this community on the cenotaph, gain an understanding of the sacrifices that were made. Services have been limited over the last two years due to COVID restrictions, so this year gives the opportunity to hold unrestricted services and activities that commemorate the sacrifices made by those serving in the defence of our country. FILM REVIEW:
THE GODFATHER: A modern meditation on evil During the recent lockdown, I took the time to explore what some may deem the canonical films of Hollywood. One such classic was the imperishable piece that left the 1973 academy awards with wins in 11 categories: Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. A story of power, revenge, recovery, and family- a timeless picture chronicling the fictitious New York Corleone Crime Family. In this film, the veil of the mafia is lifted, revealing the added elements of decorum, love, loss, and loyalty at play within a vast criminal empire. Coppola invites the audience to judge the mob on its own terms, not on its external societal implications. As we are immersed into the characterisation of the honourable mafioso Don Vito Corleone, a greater sympathy for the ‘mafia man’ archetype is conjured. In the film, the characters’ criminality is not merely a business of money, murder, and malice. La Cosa Nostra is expressed as an elevated underground society built upon respect, which just so happens to be unfortunately set on the wrong side of the law. Coppola’s judicious casting conveys the characterisation of both the film’s central actors (Brando, Pacino, Duvall, Caan) and their lesser-known counterparts (Castellano, Vigoda). Whilst there is a clear focus on our protagonists, the true character of the organisation is found within the shadows.
Coppola directs his viewers to the billboard (Don Vito, Sonny, Michael, Tom Hagen), but the lurking manpower infrastructure of this criminal enterprise is more of the alleyway: the sunken, the sullen, the surly (Sal Tessio and Peter Clemenza). A consistent thematic darkness, spawn of Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis’ collaboration, is tactical and effective. A sensation of impending doom and devastation is present, as Coppola communicates his pessimism in his cinematography’s artful realism. A maintenance of gloominess and caliginous colour grading also allows for viewers to be made conscious of the scenes’ solemn sentiment without a requisite for dialogue. This powerful imagery conveys the darkness of both the characters and the circumstances they are facing. Recurring wide angles encapsulating all members of a given scene are used by the director as means to remain steady and graceful in his cinematography. These establishing shots do not move rapidly from one to another; this is intentional.
immersion fuses dimensions of groundbreaking diegesis with aesthetic elegance, allowing the audience to evolve from the role of a spectator to a stakeholder in the literary space.
Consequently, the audience can explore such dynamic angles for longer; feeling as though they too are a fixture situated in the unfolding narrative. Examples of this technique’s incorporation are within tense meetings, where the complexity of the conversation is juxtaposed by the consistency of the camera. This level of
Through the admirable portrayal of our central filmic figures, Coppola implicitly reforms the identity of the marginalised American gangster. As viewers, we are compelled to recontextualise our preconceived notions of what ‘evil’ truly is whilst our protagonists are traditionally ‘evil’, they don’t come across this way. We love
Michael, the Don, Sonny, Tom… how could they possibly be villains? As the soldiers of the Corleone Family charm us with their familial orientation, practicality and prevailing sense of duty, we develop a new perspective on individuals as moral agents. The classic 1972 picture The Godfather is available for rental and purchase on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube and Vudu. Tennyson Crowe

INSECTICIDE... OR NOT?
In healthy soils, little critters munch away. Microbes, fungi, and worms do their stuff. These little beasties below the surface munch on decomposing organic matter and nutrients released into the soil via the root systems of plants, enhancing the quality of the soil, and a well-nourished soil shares its nutrients with the roots of the plant and creates a healthy plant. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship; the critters feed the plant and the plant feeds the critters and it just keeps going. Nature does this – all on its own. We’ve all used fertilisers, and of course they do the job, but this breaks the cycle and then the plant requires an ongoing fertilising process. It is dependent on you for sustenance. Many farms currently operate this way, but there is a growing trend towards a process called regenerative farming, whereby we help the land to heal itself. Regenerative farming (or gardening) is the difference between going out into the paddock or garden and saying, ‘What do I need to get rid of today?’, versus ‘What can I grow or support today?’; in regenerative farming/gardening philosophy we think the second concept is ultimately more productive and kinder. We say, ‘don’t fertilise, don’t use insecticides; instead, support your system naturally and watch the process unfold’ Perhaps surprisingly to our conventional way of thinking, farmers that choose regenerative processes are
finding an increase in profitability and resilience for when times get tough. The reason it can work not to use insecticides is because the digestive systems of insects cannot tolerate the taste of healthy plant tissue. The whiff of a chemical from a healthy plant will turn most insects away, off to find a plant that is less healthy, for it is the role of most insects to clean up unhealthy plants. If your plants are healthy then they are likely to be untouched by insects. Under regenerative farming theory, we let nature do its stuff. Unhealthy plants will get eaten by the insects, yes, but the soil life will be improved through insect faeces and bird droppings (birds will come to eat the insects) and the next plant will have a greater chance of being healthy. It can take time, but the reduction in costs pays its way. No fertilisers, no insecticides; nature heals itself. But you’ve got to be patient with the first cycle or two. You’ve got to be able to watch (your plants get eaten) and watch what comes to your garden as you let this process unfold. Plants also pull carbon out of the atmosphere and return it to the soil and soil with a greater carbon content holds more water, which in turn increases life beneath the surface, which in turn, grows better, healthier plants, (many of which are our food supply). The areas of green (plants) expands, pulling more carbon out of the air
and returning it to the soil and on and on it goes. The land heals itself.
How do I support plants in my Regenerative System?
There are a million books on the subject, but start with podcasts on “regenerative farming”, or "Call of the Reed Warbler" by
Charles Massey (AOM), "Holistic Management" by Allan Savory or plug ‘regenerative gardening’ into google. Lara Taylor (Freelance writer, 0428 333 728) & Julian Lee, (Sustainability Educator for Randwick City Council, 0403 013 366)

THANK YOU TO OUR HEALTHCARE HEROES It’s been a stressful two years for the healthcare system and thousands of NSW nurses walked off the job recently for the first time in a decade.
An online fundraiser launched by Lions volunteers has been giving the community an opportunity to say thank you to their COVID Healthcare Heroes. The Coogee Lions Club’s Healthcare Heroes GoFundme page has now raised over $5200 to help recognise the hard work of nurses working tirelessly in COVID-19 Red Zones. Recognised nurses at Prince of Wales Hospital are being presented with a Lions Healthcare Heroes certificate of thanks and a $50 shopping voucher. Coogee Lions Club Co-President Sari-Elle Kraemer is encouraging the community to get behind the fundraiser and show healthcare workers how much they are appreciated at this difficult time. “Healthcare staff have been working under extreme conditions now for months.” “Many are working longer and more frequent shifts in physically challenging environments, having to perform their role in double layered personal protective equipment and not to mention endure the stress and trauma of increasing case numbers.
“We encourage the community to help us through making or donation or helping spread the word. The more funds raised the more hardworking Healthcare Heroes we can recognise.” For more information on how you can help thank our COVID-19 Healthcare Heroes visit: https://www.gofundme.com/f/coogee-lionshealthcare-heroes Every dollar raised will go to the Healthcare Heroes.

CLUB FLOODED AMID COUNCIL INACTION During last month’s downpours, a section of Westfield’s roof collapsed. Elsewhere in Bondi Junction, a massive gum tree came crashing down. Potholes threatened to become sinkholes. And the front green at Bondi Bowling Club became covered in a foot of water… again. Waverley Council has been sitting on a flood management report advocating stormwater upgrades in a number of locations. Listed as number one priority is Warners Ave, North Bondi, which is where Bondi Bowlos is located.
David Reynolds gazes out over the front green of Bondi Bowlos. At the moment, it is looking very, well, green. It has been wellwatered during the recent days of rain. And because Warners Ave lies in a shallow valley that was once swampland, it has a tendency to flood. And the first place to become immersed, after the road, is the front green at the Bowlos. “It becomes a lake,” said David, the Bowlos’ general manager.
David’s daughter Siobhan, who also works at the club, said: “You could swim across it but you wouldn’t want to – the water is really smelly!” Turns out there are leaking sewer pipes underground, so it can get a bit on the nose when the green floods. David and Siobhan were interested when we told them that a stormwater upgrade is on the agenda. Actually, what has been recommended is no mere routine upgrade, but a trebling of stormwater capacity in the Warners Ave vicinity.
the Warners Ave area plus a number of other Bondi locations.
In the latest inundation, no houses or flats in Warners Ave and adjoining streets were flooded, unless you count a few belowground garages. But in recent times, homes have suffered bad flood damage on a number of occasions. Which is why the Waverley Local Government Area Flood Study identifies “the low-lying region to the east of Old South Head Rd” as the most flood-prone spot in the LGA.
The study says it is not just the low-lying topography of Warners Ave that causes flooding. The document refers to a “blockage of drainage systems” and recommends “trebling of the existing drainage capacity.” Stormwater upgrades are also recommended for a number of other streets elsewhere in Bondi including Beach St, Francis St, Jacques Ave and Roscoe St.
The study noted how in a number of past heavy rain events, such as those in August 2015 and February 2017, residents encountered “above-floor flooding” in
Written by a firm of consultants, the flood study has been floating around in various draft forms for five years, having first been tabled at a council meeting in 2017. In April
Action needed on flooding: David and Siobhan Reynolds at Bondi Bowlos last year, the council’s Strategic Planning and Development Committee finally signed off on it and put the study on public exhibition for a month. A year later, the recommended stormwater upgrades have yet to take place. The council is looking “at the potential solutions to issues identified in the Waverley LGA Flood Study,” according to a spokesperson. Meanwhile, the front green at the Bowlos will continue to flood, depriving the club of half its bowling capacity – there are only two greens. And residents in Warners Ave and other parts of Bondi will have an uneasy night’s sleep when rain drums on the roof. Tony Maguire

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said Waverley Council is committed to improving pedestrian safety throughout the LGA and beautifying our outdoor spaces. “Waverley has lots of high pedestrian activity areas within just nine squarekilometres, including along the Coastal Walk, and calmer traffic will help create a safer community,” Mayor Masselos said. Residents will have the opportunity to provide feedback on these safety improvements before plans are finalised. Bobby’s Corner Café ticks all the boxes Bobby’s Corner is a friendly neighbourhood café tucked away in a tranquil location on the corner of Hastings Parade and Wairoa Avenue - just a five-minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Bondi Beach. The café serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, and is a community hub for families, pooches, locals catching up, and with free WIFI, provides an ideal spot for those working remotely. The café exudes atmosphere and warmth immediately you walk in the door and are welcomed by the friendly staff – or by Bobby, the owner. What’s lovely is you have the choice of sitting inside, undercover outside, or in a light and airy conservatory. The soul of the café is owner Bobby, who says you have to "work from your heart and love what you do". Originally from Thailand, he clearly loves his work. Whether its engaging with customers, making the strong, chocolatey Italian-style coffee of which he’s so proud – or creating dishes for the café’s menu - inspired by chefs he’s worked with during his years in hospitality. His mantra is: "use quality ingredients and keep it simple" – and create a menu that everyone will enjoy, whether vegetarian, vegan, or dairy or gluten-intolerant. The menu’s so yummy you’ll find it hard to decide what to eat – but if you’re after breakfast, a long-standing customer favourite is ‘Bondi Benny’ - potato rosti, poached eggs, spinach hollandaise sauce, and choices including bacon, broccolini, and smoked salmon. Or, as we head into winter, Bobby’s breakfast choice is the
café’s signature ‘warm coconut porridge’, made of rolled oats, coconut milk, organic mixed quinoa, caramelised bananas, berries, honey and crunchy pistachio. For lunch he recommends the ‘coconut curry rice’, with broccolini, roasted cauliflower, chili, micro herbs and a choice of grilled chicken or grilled tofu.
To brighten those looming dark wintry evenings, Bobby’s planning on hosting ‘Thai Nights’. It won’t be your usual Thai fare – the emphasis will be on ‘traditional’ – and yes, some dishes will be authentically hot – but he said there will be something to suit everyone’s palette. His criteria - to make sure the food is "as good as Mum’s"! If you want to take a ‘taste of Bobby’s’ home with you, you’re in luck, the café sells many of the ingredients used in his recipes. So, you can sate your appetite and shop at the same time! Bobby, unsurprisingly, is not one to stand still – and has opened a Bobby’s Corner Café in Surry Hills. The new café serves his delicious coffee, juices, and food such as ‘housebaked granola and yogurt’, ‘Corner ‘Avo Smash’, and a selection of sandwiches. Whether you visit the Bondi or Surry Hills café, you’ll get a warm welcome, good food – and of course, that great brew of coffee. Pauline Wall

EASTERN SUBURBS Ed 40, April, 2022
Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE
Have your say on Double Bay
It is important for Council and the community to be able to influence how, where, and to what density new development occurs in future in Double Bay. Our Draft Double Bay Centre Planning and Urban Design Strategy aims to protect Double Bay’s village character, while providing a strengthened framework to guide future development in the Centre. It contains recommendations on protecting character and heritage, maintaining solar access to key public spaces, promoting walkability and creating a viable environment for local businesses to thrive. We want your feedback on this important document, and encourage you to make a submission by Friday May 6 at yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au
Disability Action Plan
We are committed to supporting people with a disability who live, work and play in Woollahra, and our draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) details the steps that Council will take over the next four years to further support and improve inclusion for people with a disability. The DIAP focuses on promoting positive attitudes and behaviours, creating liveable communities and improving systems, processes, and employment opportunities. We would love to hear your feedback on the draft plan before April 8 via a short survey. Visit yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/diap to share your thoughts.
Bondi to Manly Ultra
The Bondi to Manly Ultra is an 80km run from Bondi Beach to Manly Beach on Saturday Nov 5. The run will follow the 80km Bondi to Manly walking track around Sydney Harbour, taking in the Woollahra LGA’s spectacular cliff tops at Watsons Bay, heading along the harbour foreshore through national parks and taking in iconic Australian landmarks and cultural sites along the way. All proceeds from the event will be reinvested into the track - improving it for the benefit of future generations. Tickets are on sale now. Visit bonditomanlyultra.com for more info.
Major makeover for council chambers
Councillors have agreed that the council complex on Bondi Road needs a $5.8 million refurbishment which will commence early next year.
The reason for the work? Waverley Council Chambers has reached its use-by date, with some parts of the building complex dating back to 1913. Most of the current structure was built in the 1960s and 1970s. “Many of the major building elements are old and coming to the end of useful life,” said a report tabled at a full meeting of Waverley Council. So the plan is to do a complete refit – electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, a new sloping roof to replace the leaking flat one, plus revamped, open plan workspaces. The report proposed a timetable where procurement commences in November and work gets underway in January 2023. Members of the public will be able to have their say about the project, with the refurbishment report about to be placed on public exhibition.
On your bike: Junction too cycle-friendly? Waverley Council is grappling with the problem of having made Bondi Junction a bit too cycle-friendly.
Council backs regulations to prohibit Matraville incinerator
Council will lodge a submission supporting the NSW EPA’s draft Energy from Waste regulations which will prohibit the building of an incinerator at the Opal Paper Mill in Matraville. Randwick Council and the local community have been opposing the Matraville incinerator because of the concern about burning waste near residential homes. The regulations will become law once they’re gazetted. Mayor Dylan Parker said the draft regulations were “a ray of hope for residents concerned about living next to a commercial incinerator spewing out emissions. The proposed Matraville incinerator has been a dark cloud hanging over our community for three years.” More information about Council’s stance on the incinerator plan can be found on its eastern suburbs incinerator webpage.
All go with FOGO
Councillors have agreed to maintain the supply of biodegradable bags to households for the FOGO green waste recycling scheme. A report tabled in council said that since its inception in March last year, Council has collected and composted 13,316 tonnes of FOGO material – almost twice the amount of organics collected the previous year. Councillors approved the option of bulk delivery of compostable caddy liners every six months and on request by residents for a further year.
Dog friendly beach
The northern end of Frenchmans Beach in La Perouse may be officially designated dog-friendly.
The mall has become a raceway for cyclists and there have been pedestrian safety problems elsewhere. “With the completion of the cycleway on Spring Street, pedestrians are often straying into the cycleway and into the path of cyclists,” Councillors Angela Burrill and Tony Kay said in a motion calling for improved safety for both pedestrians and bike-riders in the junction. They said the footpath and the cycleway on Spring Street should be clearly distinguishable from each other and that cyclists should be discouraged from using the mall.
Road closures due to Anzac march
Council has approved the closure of Ramsgate Ave and Campbell Pde in North Bondi between 4am and 8am on April 25. The closures will take place as North Bondi RSL Club holds a dawn service, Anzac Day march and wreath-laying ceremony.
Hello everyone! Growing up in the Eastern Suburbs I’ve spent my life appreciating all our coastal setting has to offer right on our doorstep. One of the key local issues I have been working on is the increasing number of inappropriate development plans that are threatening our beautiful seaside suburbs. The east is known for its history, character and the natural beauty the geography provides. The charm and heritage of our suburbs however, is being threatened by inappropriate and unsustainable over development. As such, it has never been more important to voice your concerns regarding development and planning and for us to ensure a genuine balance exists between local interests and broader societal needs. To ensure your voice is being heard, I invite everyone to come to our second online Community Town Hall meeting with Shadow Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, MP, to be held via zoom on Wednesday April 6 from 6pm-7pm. This meeting is a great way to shine a light on this important issue and for you to raise any concerns you may have regarding development in our area and what you would like to see changed. To register, please scan the QR code below or head to this link: https://marjorieoneill.com.au/community/communitytown-hall-meetings/ I look forward to seeing you there.
This follows a motion from Councillor Daniel Rosenfeld, who pointed out that Randwick is “one of the few coastal Councils in Sydney without a designated dog friendly beach.” He said that making the beach an off leash area should be subject to a number of conditions including signage saying that dog owners are required to clean up after their pets.

A report by the NSW Chief Scientist on the health impacts of synthetic fields is due to be handed down in the middle of this year. A major problem is the way the artificial turf heats up. “While synthetic turf is playable after major rain events it can lose playing hours in summer due to extreme heat,” Deputy Mayor Kym Chapple (Greens) told Council. Particles could also leach into waterways.
