Cooper Park Garage Is diabetes associated with poorer hearing?

Approximately 1.2 million Australian have diabetes, and over one million of these are adults with Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is more prevalent in ages 65 years and older (Source: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare).

Diabetes puts at risk m any parts of the body (e.g., eyes, kidneys) because of its role in causing dysfunction of small blood vessels and nerve dysfunction. The inner ear (cochlear) functioning can also be affected in this way, and therefore cause permanent sensorineural hearing loss. Researchers are currently examining thickening of the walls of the cochlear blood vessels as a cause of hearing loss, as well as atrophy of structures that maintain the chemical balance within the cochlear. To maintain good i nner ear health for all (not just those with diabetes) it is advised to: avoid smoking, maintain good nutrition, and undertake regular exercise
