Democracy originated in Athens about 2,500 years ago and, despite attacks, both from within and outside it has survived until today. Democracy has played a vital role in the story of civilization, helping transform the world from power structures of monarchy, empire, and conquest into popular rule, selfdetermination, and peaceful co-existence.

In line with that sentiment this edition brings you “Christmas Greetings” from all sections of the Double Bay community including the Mayor of Woollahra, the local Uniting Church in Transvaal Ave, and broad range of Local Businesses - P5.

Watching the world before the Great War Churchill said “If I had to sum up the immediate future of democratic politics in a single word I should say “insurance.” That is the future - insurance against dangers from abroad, insurance against dangers scarcely less grave and much more near and constant which threaten us here at home in our own island.”

All this is not to be dismal, but to remind us to be grateful that we live in a democracy and to celebrate our blessings as one, and, in the words of the 1650s carol, bring you “Tidings of Comfort and Joy” and say “Let Nothing You Dismay – Or as Tadeja Tasmin reminds us “Flowers Grow In The Pavement Cracks.”

Acknowledging both the above helps create a healthy democracy that benefits the whole community. Taking short cuts just to win an argument, rather than fully understand the truth, can look like democracy, but never delivers the best results. Once the voters spot that, they start saying “The country is heading in the wrong direction”. Sadly, this is now happening in democracies around the world. As Neville Wran used to say “The mob will always get you.”

Signs that things are now less than right can be seen in the 61% No vote in the Voice referendum and an increase in antisemitism similar to that which occurred before both the WWI and WWII. Societies in good health tolerate all sorts of diverging views, but sadly our new “Cancel Culture” and “Critical Race Theory” world has Net Zero Tolerance and seeks to set people against each other.

In the same decade, in another country, on the opposite side of the world, Menzies spoke of the “Forgotten People”, those who aspired to make a contribution, whose motto was “If it’s to be it’s up to me” (not his words, but certainly his sentiment). Later these same people were called “Howard’s Battlers” - Is it just coincidence that they are the two longest serving Australian Prime Ministers in living memory?

health these things break down. Causes can be external threats, or governments ignoring the voice of the people leading to events like the signing of Magna Carta in 1215.

Darl

On Oct 31, 1944 Winston Churchill addressed the House of Commons in the UK with these words. “At the bottom of all the tributes paid to democracy is the little man, walking into the little booth, with a little pencil, making a little cross on a little bit of paper—no amount of rhetoric or voluminous discussion can possibly diminish the overwhelming importance of that point.”

PEDESTRIAN UPGRADES FOR BAY STREET Council will deliver a suite of pedestrian upgrades in Bay St, Double Bay that will improve safety, accessibility, amenity and connection to the Double Bay Ferry Wharf, beach and Steyne Park.

When complete, they will make walking, cycling and public transport an easier and more enjoyable way to access the harbour front. These works will be delivered at the same time as Transport for NSW’s major upgrade of the Double Bay Ferry Wharf, resulting in a fresh look for the entire precinct. This project involves moving the street’s existing cul-de-sac closer to the Double Bay centre, allowing the expansion of the paved area between the street and ferry wharf. Through pedestrian-friendly design and increased planting and landscaping, the upgrades will result in a leafy and attractive space that enhances the character of the area. The works have been split into two stages: Stage One - Bay St, north of William St Stage Two - Bay St, between William and Cross Streets.

Stage One work includes: • Moving the cul-de-sac 26 metres closer to William St. • Creating a paved pedestrian zone at the northern end of Bay St. • Reducing ten car parking spaces to allow a greater area for walking and adding bicycle racks. • Adding new landscaping. As part of the works and as resolved by Council on Apr 11, 2023, five trees will be removed and replacement planting will include 12 street and park trees to increase the tree canopy. • Improving stormwater drainage and quality of water management. Stage Two work includes: • Installing pavers on the footpath on both sides of the road, to match the pavers installed in Stage One. • Upgrading the road surface. • Improving stormwater drainage and quality of water management. Woollahra Council is committed to making art accessible to the public. As part of the Bay St upgrade, a public artwork will be installed on site in 2024. Woollahra Council has engaged Curator Holly Williams from

Further details on the public art project and commission will be available shortly. This project is wholly funded by a grant from the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program. Council has appointed Civeco Civil Engineering to undertake the upgrade works. Construction of Stage One

began in July 2023 and construction of Stage Two began in Nov 2023. Work will be carried out between 7am - 5pm Monday to Friday, and possibly some Saturdays between 7am - 1pm as required. ST MARK’S MUSIC LAUNCH STRIKES THE RIGHT CHORD St Mark’s Music was launched on Thursday, Nov 9, 2023. Guests were entertained by both the St Mark’s Choir and Matthew Lee, the inaugural Basil Sellers Choral Scholarship recipient.

St Mark’s Rector; Rev Dr Michael Jensen; shared his vision for St Mark’s Music. He enthused: “St Mark’s Music (an activity of the St Mark’s Darling Point Cultural Trust) has been set up with tax deductible status as a means of funding ‘cultural’ ministries – especially music – at St Mark’s. My prayer is that, with the help of the Trust, St Mark’s would become known even more as a centre for excellent, beautiful, and Christ-focused music which benefits the community and is to God’s glory.”

our successful organ scholarship programme via St Mark’s Music.”

Mr Basil Sellers AM shared: “I see the scholarships as the starting point for the continued growth of quality music at St Mark’s and am excited to see how this program and the individual scholars evolve musically in the future. I’m hoping other people and organisations will join this chain of giving both their time, energy and financial support to advance this wonderful music ministry.” To learn more about St Mark’s Music, visit https://stmarksdp.org/ministries/st-marks-music/ or click on the QR code below.

Friday 15 December 5pm – Kids Carols

Explaining how St Mark’s Music came about, Michael shared: “St Mark’s has a long tradition and commitment to sharing fine choral and organ music with both our regular congregation and wider community. The church has looked to honour the bequest of the late Michael Crouch by establishing St Mark’s Music. Recently we’ve been able to offer several Choral Scholarships thanks to the generosity of Basil Sellers AM. This program aims to facilitate the development of young musicians and grow St Mark’s music ministry. We will also be able to support

ST CANICE BLESSING BAGS

Seven years ago when I downsized from a four storey house to an apartment, I realised how much stuff we just don’t need! That first Christmas we came across the wonderful St Canice Church in Elizabeth Bay. A beautiful warm welcoming community whom I discovered later were extremely active in providing cooked meals every single day to our local homeless people, and all run by donations and volunteers. Following our first Christmas service there we walked out to find several homeless people camped out the front. My children and I were upset that anyone would miss out on a gift on Christmas Day, so we walked up the road and came back with Christmas chocolates for everyone. This inspired us to make Christmas Blessing Bags. The following year we purchased 30 bags and put the bags together and distributed them.

I decided to approach some people I knew, and grow this into a tradition where every guest of Canice's Kitchen would receive a Christmas Blessing Bag. The Christmas before lockdown we had over 200 bags and everyone received one. So now my Christmas wish is that no one misses out on a Christmas Blessing Bag. This venture could not have been possible without some amazing kind people like Tony Herro of Chemist Warehouse, Rose

Bay and Bondi; Evette and Mark Moran of the Mark Moran Group in Vaucluse, who were simply beyond generous and donated boxes and boxes of soft drinks, chocolate bars, easy-open tuna tins, make-up, sanitary items, perfume and many more items. Soon after, Jennifer and team at Blakes Pharmacy Kings Cross and Michael at Priceline Pharmacy Kings Cross came aboard. Elizabeth became our poster girl every year, and with her familiar face she became affectionately known as the Kings Cross Poster Girl. I am also grateful to Lynelle Lembryk who was always there to assist.

Elizabeth and Lynelle have since retired and I have now started working with Olly and Father David Braithwaite from the St Canice Parish who do remarkable work for our community. They give more than just food, they give care every day of the year, so if you feel you can donate in other ways please reach out. I hope you will join us to keep growing this initiative my children and I started in 2016. To find out more just go to this link: https://www.stcanice.org.au or email: leeann.gardner@bigpond.com

GUIDING & TEACHING TAROT

Hello everyone and welcome to my column,

Heading down Burton St on the corner of Palmer St is the Darlinghurst Playhouse better known as the Eternity Playhouse.

1

5

You can google me at Ruth Marks Tarot Card Reader for all my background and media information. I have had 25 years of knowledge and experience with the Tarot Cards. They can help open up hidden information and unlock any problems which can guide you to plan for a positive future. If you have any problems please don't hesitate to phone me on 0414 273 104.

I begin my walk at St Vincent's Hospital, established in 1857 by five Irish Sisters of Charity, who had migrated to Sydney in 1838 with a mission to help the poor and disadvantaged. Some of their early work included helping victims of the 1853 influenza outbreak and families of prisoners in the nearby Darlinghurst Gaol. They established a hospital that was free for all people but founded especially for the poor, on a nonsectarian basis. Opposite the hospital is the Sydney Jewish Museum on Darlinghurst Rd. It is housed in the historic Maccabean Hall, which was built to commemorate Jewish men and women from NSW who served in WWI. This building, formally opened on Armistice Day 1923 by Sir John Monash, has long been a hub of Jewish life in Sydney and was judged an appropriate site for the Sydney Jewish Museum.

2

26 years since its inception, the Museum continues to give a voice to the victims of the Holocaust so their stories can start conversations and inspire change. The Sydney Jewish Museum’s tagline, "Where history has a voice", distills the origins of the Museum and its mission that continues to carry it forward into the future. The objects within the collection and on display in the Museum’s exhibitions tell the stories of their owners and contribute to the narratives that the Museum tells within its walls.

3

Heading down Burton St I pass The National Art School (NAS) which is a tertiary level art school. It's origins was in the formation of Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts in 1843. NAS has been in operation on the historic Darlinghurst Gaol site in East Sydney in various forms since 1922 and was formerly part of East Sydney Technical College, known as East Sydney Tech. On the corner of Forbes St and Burton is a sandstone building called The Lunatic Reception House. Opened in 1868 it operated until 1961 and then was renamed Caritas House under the care of St Vincent's Hospital.

4

Approx. 100,000 men and women passed through these doors, many more were treated for mental illness as outpatients and inpatients by St Vincents Hospital between 1962 and 2010. Interestly, Henry Lawson (Austn poet and writer) was one of the patients, visiting between 1908 -10.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 - Dec 21) THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE is the Tarot

Card for Sagittarius.

Originally, it began as an off-shoot of the nearby Woolloomooloo Baptist Church, formed in 1872 with the Reverend Frederick Hibberd as its pastor. Parishioner and architect John Stone, designed the new, purpose-built church the Burton Street Tabernacle which was completed in 1887 and was the focus of local Baptist worship for over 100 years. In 2004, the building was acquired by the City of Sydney who transformed it into a theatre. Work began in 2008, and the building was reopened as a state-ofthe-art venue known as the Eternity Playhouse in 2013. The name Eternity Playhouse came about back when the building was the Burton Street Tabernacle, Reverend John Ridley reportedly told the congregation that he wished he could ‘shout eternity through the streets of Sydney’.

6

This card shows a wheel constantly turning. Although it's a wheel, it has four corners which means you are steady and grounded. You can also sometimes be unpredictable and speak your mind therefore you can be impatient and outspoken and tell it how it is. You are a person who should work for yourself as you will always go your own way. There are changes and opportunities ahead for you. As an adventurer you should aways take the time to travel. Your ruling planet is Jupiter which is a sign of good fortune, this will always help you no matter how dire your circumstances. Lucky Gemstone: Turquoise Lucky Number: 18 Lucky Colours: Blue and Violet

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 20) THE WORLD is the Tarot Card for Capricorn.

Heading up Palmer St I turn right into Oxford St, where I pass an Art-Deco designed shopfront which is the tailoring business "G. A. Zink & Sons" established in 1895 by German immigrant Gustav Adolph Zink, who in 1911 commissioned a four-storey premises at 56 Oxford Street, designed by architect John Dunstan and built by G. T. Brown around the first half of 1912 on a new block formed by the widening of Oxford St. Gustav Zink ran the business until his death in Aug 1932, and is buried in Waverley Cemetery; he was succeeded in running the business by his son, Frank William Zink.

7

This card shows a Goddess encircled by a wreath of leaves and fruits. She looks free with no worrries or concerns. This is the start of a new cycle. The Goddess is discipilined and responsible. There is personal growth and transformation around her and she is ambitious and organized but she can also be stern and judgemental. She is also ruled by the planet Saturn. Achievement is in your blood. Many Capricorns start with nothing and achieve great heights. You are guaranteed success if you continue to persevere. If you are ever feeling down in a rut, tired or emotionally drained, plan a trip as travel will inspire you. It is important you take time to play and have something to look forward to. Lucky Gemstone: Diamond Lucky Number: 8 Lucky Colours: Brown, Grey or Charcoal

RUTH MARKS TAROT CARD READER 0414 273 104

GOOGLE: Ruth Marks Tarot Card Reader Tarot Card lessons available Further along is the Burdekin Hotel, formerly Flanagan's Hotel. The site has been occupied almost continuously by a hotel since the 1840s. It is significant because of its association with the prominent architectural firm of Rudder & Grout. They designed many Art Deco hotels around Sydney.

Kensington residents furious after plans were unveiled for high-rise student accommodation

UNSW have controversially unveiled plans for high-rise student accommodation at the car park next to NIDA. The top Sydney university alongside prominent developer Iglu, are proposing the construction of five buildings at the site to help house more than 1000 students.

have proposed two high-rise towers of more than 23 storeys or 76 metres tall, despite the current allowable height of nine storeys.

It comes amongst Australia’s cost of living crisis, where students have been left with limited options for affordable housing. The UNSW Education Collective said that the proposal is “out of reach”, at an estimated $650 a week, for students working parttime or on student allowances.

Neighbouring educational institution, NIDA, is also “strongly opposed” to the application in its current form.

Local Kensington residents are also aggrieved at the lack of community consultation. The Kensington Residents Group against DA/168/2023 Iglu UNSW development have created a petition calling for the development to be “rejected and height lowered to an appropriate height”. The Residents Group states that the proposed buildings are “disproportionately tall”. In their application, UNSW and Iglu

The Residents Group are concerned that the proposed development will “dwarf” existing buildings and will be an “obtrusive visual bulk” reducing the “local character of the neighbourhood”.

In a letter to residents, NIDA stated that they are “not against responsible and reasonable development” but are concerned with construction noise, vibration and dust, increased traffic, loss of sunlight, overshadowing and a lack of privacy. Both parties are calling for “proper and adequate community consultation” to ensure a “well-sited, appropriate and sympathetic building is to be approved”. Residents are also concerned it will “set a dangerous precedent for out of scale development in the future” after Randwick Council voted to increase the maximum building site for the neighbouring South Juniors in Kingsford just last year.

The application is still under assessment with Randwick Council, and has been referred to the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel. Residents opposed to the development are

urged to contact Randwick Council, or local member Ron Hoenig. Hannah McKinney

First section of Kingsford to Centennial Park cycleway now open Cycling between Kingsford and the City just got a little easier with the first stage of a 1.8km separated cycleway officially opened. The new 1.1km cycleway section starts at the intersection of Houston Rd and Barker St and travels north onto Day Ave and then Doncaster Ave finishing at Todman Ave. The next 700m section between Todman Ave and Alison Rd along Doncaster Ave will open in late Dec 2023. The cycleway forms an important connection between Kingsford and Kensington linking with existing cycleways at Centennial Park to access the City and beyond. The project was developed by Randwick City Council and was delivered by Burton Contractors on behalf of Transport for NSW as part of a $240m investment by the Australian and NSW Governments to help economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’d like to thank the residents of Kensington and Kingsford for their patience while this cycleway was constructed over the past two years. “It has been a challenging build requiring 52 driveway upgrades, 960m of

stormwater pipes, 37 pram/cycle ramps, four new pedestrian crossings and upgraded traffic signals. “But we now have a critical piece of cycling and walking infrastructure between Kingsford and the City making it easier and safer for those who choose to ride. “We know that more people will ride once there is safe and convenient infrastructure in place. This is good news for people looking to make short trips on a bike, access UNSW, connect with the light rail stations or commute to the City.

Mayor Philipa Veitch, BIKeast members, Transport for NSW staff and Burton Contractors officially opening the new cycleway

“The population of Kingsford and Kensington is growing and this route will be increasingly popular as an alternative transport option. “I commend the State and Federal Governments for having the foresight to fund and deliver this important infrastructure for the people of Randwick City. “I will also be advocating that the cycleway be extended south to connect with the Kingsford light rail terminus and Council’s future South Coogee to Kingsford cycleway as originally planned,” Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch said.

BLUE PLAQUE TO HONOUR BONDI SURF BATHERS LIFE SAVING CLUB The Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club, born on one of Australia’s best-known and iconic beaches, will be honoured with a Blue Plaque, to celebrate the legacy of the nation’s first-recorded lifesaving club. The Club was established in Feb 1907 after founding members recognised sea bathing was a danger to those unused to swimming at Sydney’s beaches. Its central aim was ‘the rescue of the distressed’. Club members performed 34 rescues in their first year of operation, helping to inspire the creation of many similar surf lifesaving clubs at beaches across Australia. After more than 100 years, the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club remains in operation, rescuing more than 12,000 swimmers and surfers every year. Its club house is full of history, including a Hall of Champions. The Blue Plaque is one of 14 which have been selected in the second round of the NSW Government’s Blue Plaques NSW program. It was chosen from 117 nominations made by the public and

assessed by independent historians. The new plaques will be installed in coming months, joining the 35 already in place.

Heritage NSW is working to finalise the plaque’s location and once installed it will be listed on the Blue Plaques NSW website www.blueplaques.nsw.gov.au Blue Plaques NSW celebrates well-known characters many of us are familiar with, but also brings attention to lesser-known stories of people and events that shaped a particular community, town, or field of work or study. “These Blue Plaques recognise the diverse individuals, events and perspectives that make the history of NSW so intriguing. “Whether you’re exploring Sydney neighbourhoods such as Bondi or taking a drive off the beaten track to regional towns like Grafton and Pambula, there’s a Blue Plaque for you to discover. “The installation of each new plaque brings added interest to the heritage of an area, encouraging locals to explore their backyards, and inviting those from further afield to learn more about the history of

these communities.” Minister for Heritage Penny Sharpe “This Blue Plaque doesn't just mark history; it salutes the pioneers of the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club who made beach recreation safer for everyone.

“Beyond the sand, the bathers and the reel, this association has served to establish a long-standing tradition of service to others.” Member for Coogee Marjorie O’Neill

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

CAUGHT IN A COUNTRY AT WAR

On Oct 7, Hamas-led terrorists launched a multi-pronged attack on Southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing more than 1200 people, injuring around 6,900 and taking around 240 hostages. Consequently war broke out - just as a Melbourne couple arrived in Tel Aviv in the early part of their Mediterranean holiday. Gary and Miranda spoke exclusively to ESL about their experience. ESL: When did you arrive in Israel? A: Friday, Oct 6. ESL: How did you find out about the war? A: We woke up to hear of an attack near Gaza. We were shown what to do if the air raid siren went off – go down the stairwell to the basement, away from windows. Minutes later, the siren actually did go off. We then learnt that Israel was now at war.

ESL: What were your plans? A: It was

lovely day so we went for a walk. As it was the Sabbath and a Jewish holiday, the streets were empty and everything was closed. At night we ventured out but nothing was open except a small supermarket. We were in the checkout queue when we heard explosions. Gary said to get down on the ground. We were the only ones doing this, and everyone else was just looking at us. We then made our purchases, and we had just stepped outside when the siren sounded so we rushed back in and everybody raced to the safe area at the back of the shop. We then learned that those explosions were the sounds of the iron dome intercepting the Hamas rockets, so they were keeping us

safe. Throughout the week, there would be several more sirens, so we had to be ready at any time of the day or night to go to the bomb shelter.

ESL: What did you do the following day?

There had been no sirens that day so we felt a little safer to walk a bit further. We had also been instructed that if a siren was to go off, we could seek shelter in an underground carpark or in the stairwell of any apartment block where most people were keeping their keypads unlocked. Gary wanted to walk to the beach. I said, “but there are no bomb shelters there!” No sooner had the words come out of my mouth that I realized that that was something I had never said before! The streets were a little busier than the day before and a few shops were open. Usually, in Israel it is common to see soldiers patrolling the streets, but we saw none the whole time we were in Israel, except for one stationed out the front of the hotel who explained he was just there for reassurance. He didn’t carry any weapons.

Donations being sorted out at the hotel ballroom, Tel Aviv

ESL: Were you scared? A: Yes, as the

teenage girls would arrive to help out with the younger kids. They would normally have been at school. Overall, there was a real community spirit, with everyone united in shock and grief, yet on the surface there was a veneer of normalcy.

ESL: What was your plan then? A: Our

days passed I was jumping at every sound expecting the alarm to sound at any moment. At the same time, we were constantly on the lookout for somewhere to hide if the siren sounded. plans changed from one hour to the next. Airlines were cancelling. Meanwhile, we were moved to a larger hotel, which was filling up fast with families from the affected areas. Some brought their dogs with them.

ESL: What was the general feeling? A: Car loads of clothes, shoes and toys for

the evacuees were arriving. There was an overwhelming amount, and everybody who was able, was pitching in and helping. We also helped by unloading the boxes and bags and carrying them to the ballroom upstairs for sorting. Of the people we spoke to, none were from the kibbutz that had been attacked, but it’s safe to say the whole country was deeply affected. Every day

London. We finally flew out on Friday, Oct 13 and when we arrived at Heathrow, we were met by Steven Smith, the High Commissioner to the UK, the Australian press and people from the local Jewish community holding welcome banners. We were treated almost like celebrities. We were told that we were going to stay for four nights, after which we would fly to Dubai, then Sydney. We made our own way to Melbourne.

ESL: Would you go back to Israel once this is all over? A: Yes. We would do the

tour and cruise we missed out on, because all we saw was the (mostly) empty streets of Tel Aviv.

HELP GIVE SICK KIDS THE BRIGHTEST CHRISTMAS POSSIBLE

Nobody loves Christmas more than kids - the anticipation, the food, the family gatherings and, of course, the visits from Santa!

We treasure these kinds of memories from our own childhood, but there are kids today who might not look back at this time of year in the same way we do. That’s because childhood illness doesn’t stop over this time. Families still receive life-changing diagnoses, life-saving surgeries still take place, and essential therapies are still needed. If they are too ill or injured to be where they want to be - at home surrounded by their family and that magical festive spirit they desperately want to be a part of. Instead, some may need to spend Christmas in a hospital ward, treatment room or outreach centre. That’s why Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation needs the community’s support now more than ever to help raise as much as possible to continue changing young lives. Innovation and imagination is happening at the front line every day, and the community can help develop and support this extraordinary work. Together, we can help give families the greatest gift of all this Christmas and light up the faces of sick kids, wherever they may be getting treatment or spending the festive season, giving them the brightest Christmas possible.

By supporting the appeal, you can make one donation that helps all sick kids, regardless of their age or the type of illness or injury they have. From the toddlers to the teenagers, the inner cities to the outer suburbs, regional, rural and beyond - this is your chance to give all sick kids the brightest Christmas possible. The funds raised from this appeal will help support our network of world-leading children’s healthcare services, including The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, Kids Research, the Newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS) and the only children’s hospice in NSW, Bear Cottage. To help give sick kids the brightest Christmas possible, visit www.schf.org.au and donate today or consider leaving a lasting legacy.

Leaving a gift in your Will, no matter how large or small, is a powerful way to make a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of children far beyond your lifetime. UNLOCKING SUMMER'S POTENTIAL: THE POWER OF PLAY As the summer holidays approach, parents often find themselves contemplating how to make the most of these precious weeks. The summer holidays offer a much needed break from routine and academic pressures.

While vacations and day trips are enjoyable, it's essential to recognize the value that unstructured time to play brings to children, enhancing and supporting their development. Play is a child's natural way of exploring the world and making sense of their experiences. As children engage in unstructured play, they experience the freedom to be themselves, fostering a sense of autonomy and self-esteem. During the summer holidays, children have opportunities to engage in a myriad of activities that stimulate cognitive development. From imaginative play in the backyard to constructing sandcastles on the beach, these activities encourage problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. Whether it's navigating through a make-believe world or strategizing the best way to build a tower or a cubby, during play, the brain is constantly at work, developing and refining cognitive skills. The summer holidays provide the perfect opportunity for children to break free from the constraints of indoor spaces and explore

the great outdoors. The diverse terrain of outdoor environments challenges children's bodies in ways that structured indoor activities often cannot, fostering a more robust physical development.

Riding bikes, playing tag, or climbing trees not only contribute to physical fitness but also enhance gross motor skills. These activities promote coordination, balance, and strength, laying the foundation for a healthy and active lifestyle. Many play activities are directly linked to a child’s performance in the classroom, such as the ability to build upper body strength through climbing is critical for a child’s ability to sit at a desk for an extended period. Summer play is not just about physical and cognitive development; it's a social affair that helps children build essential interpersonal skills. Whether it's organizing a game of soccer with friends or collaborating on a sandcastle masterpiece with siblings, play encourages teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication. These social interactions are invaluable for developing emotional intelligence and establishing the foundation for successful relationships in the future.

This summer, let play take centre stage in your child's holiday agenda. Consider the playgrounds, parks, and open spaces as more than just backdrops for fun – but dynamic arenas for fostering crucial skills that will benefit your child for a lifetime.

Play is also a natural stress reliever. The joy and curiosity sparked by play releases neurotransmitters in the brain like dopamine

Embrace the unstructured, spontaneous moments that unfold in parks, beaches, and your backyard. Recognize that each

and serotonin, all offering the feel good factor for every child. Outdoor play also exposes children to sunlight, promoting the production of vitamin D and positively influencing mood and overall well-being.

splash in the pool, climb up a tree, or game of hide-and-seek contributes significantly to your child's cognitive, physical, and social development. As parents, let's celebrate the power of play in shaping well-rounded, resilient individuals who approach life with curiosity, creativity, and a zest for exploration. Summer is not just a break from school; it's a season of growth, discovery, and endless possibilities through the magic of play. Have a great summer! Robyn Monro Miller AM

The plan, as endorsed by Council for feedback, proposes a range of second option proposes a $6.75m knockdown rebuild with a new building connecting the different functions, also doubling the female toilets and providing more storage for Lifeguards and Coogee Surf Club.

Hi Everyone, As the festive season approaches, there are many exciting events coming up in our community. One of the highlights of the holidays every year are Christmas Carols celebrated on our beautiful beaches. Kicking off the holiday spirit is Waverley Council, holding Carols by the Sea on Wed, Dec 13 from 5-8pm. Get together with family friends at Dolphin Court alongside Bondi Pavilion in the iconic Bondi Park, and enjoy views of sand and surf with Santa! Local performers from Rose Bay Secondary College’s Jazz Band, the Bondi Public School choir, and the Schools of Arts Academy of Dance will entertain throughout the evening. Christmas songs will be performed by special guests including Emma Pask, Jazz trio Cool Yule, the Australian Girls Choir, and the famous Bondi Brass. This is a perfect family evening out, with free face painting for kids and a sausage sizzle supporting local charities. To prepare your best carolling voice, head to the Waverley Council website for this year’s songbook! Keep the festive feeling going with Randwick Council’s Coogee Carols, on the Dec 17 from 6.30-8.30pm. This event is always a community favourite, drawing talented performers from our local area and beyond for a relaxed night of fun opposite the gorgeous Coogee Beach! Look out for announcements of performers coming up before the event on the Randwick Council website and Coogee Carols social media pages! I look forward to seeing you at these incredible community events. If you would like to keep up with events and news in the Coogee electorate, you can subscribe to my Community Newsletter by scanning the QR code

Burrows Park upgrade

Detailed site investigations will commence into extending the playing field and upgrading an amenities building at Burrows Park in Clovelly.

Grants for community groups

Eighteen community groups will be given cash and inkind support totalling almost $90,000 as part of Council’s latest round of funding for its Community Investment Program artwork project at Matraville Sports High.
