Present Australians with a problem and it’s not long till they start working to solve it, and at the same time joking about it! Which explains the above image of Double Bay auctioneer Damien Cooley leaving Kiaora Place after having successfully auctioned rolls of toilet paper to shoppers leaving Woolworths in Double Bay. Damien sold them for $1,000 and also donated the same amount himself, and was able to to donate $2,000 to charity 'Kids Giving Back'. This ranks alongside the conversation overheard in a nearby chemist “Do you have anything that kills Coronavirus?” “Ammonia Cleaner” was the reply. To which the retort was “Sorry, I thought you worked here.” None of this is to understate the seriousness of Coronavirus, or the impact it will have on the community and the economy. An impact that has already closed sporting events and will continue to be felt for months to come. An impact that will change the way that countries, worldwide, start to view strategic relationships, “just in time” stock management, and their thoughts about Globalisation. The community too has surprised itself by witnessing the antics of a few 'toilet roll' hoarders and wondered at just what they were thinking. Fortunately, they are a small minority and the vast majority have sought knowledge and information and instinctively fashioned their own behaviour to minimise spreading and catching the virus. It can be distilled to 10 points: 1. Wash your hands frequently, with soap or microbial sanitizer. 2. Use antibacterial wipes to clean public surfaces. 3. Limit visitations to elderly and aged care facilities, and keep up-to-date with

ever evolving guidelines. 4. Self-isolate for 14 days if tested positive. 5. Sneeze/cough into the pit of your elbow. 6. Stock two weeks of groceries. 7. Be aware, but not alarmed. 8. Avoid touching your face. 9. Avoid dense crowds and large gatherings. 10. Don’t panic! As in many cases, it seems that the “wisdom of crowds” provides sound answers even with imperfect knowledge. Which is good, because so much is still unknown about COVID-19. On a brighter note, it is now being reported that three Brisbane scientists are hot on the heels of creating a vaccine by using the infectious properties of the virus as a weapon against itself. Keith Chappell, Paul Young and Trent Munro may yet prove to be Australian heroes, adding to the long list of successful Aussie pioneers before them. Concerning Eastern Suburbs Life, we will now be putting more energy into distributing the digital version of the paper which can be read online at any time. In this issue of the paper we are also pleased to announce the launch of “Bayside News”. Australia is home to many amazing people. One such person is Graeme Milbourne Clark, born in Camden, NSW in 1935.
Graeme Clark finished his secondary education as a boarder at Scots College in Sydney in 1951, then went to the University of Sydney graduating with honours from an MB, BS degree (1957). Fresh from medical school, Dr Clark worked at the Royal Prince Alfred and North Shore Hospitals as a resident medical officer (1958-59). Then he specialised as a registrar in neurosurgery and otolaryngology (1961). In the early 1960s Graeme spent time as a surgeon and senior registrar in otolaryngology in the UK. He returned to Australia in 1963 to take up positions in Melbourne at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and the Alfred, Austin and Repatriation General Hospitals. Not satisfied with the treatments available to profoundly deaf patients, Graeme Clark returned to the University of Sydney to embark on further study. He completed both an MS (1968) and a PhD degree (1969). Graeme Clark then went on to develop the world’s first multi-channel cochlear implant, which has provided or restored the precious sense of hearing for many hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. The successful development of the cochlear implant has widened its application, from to all people who simply cannot obtain sufficient benefit from hearing aids and yet may

FINDING A GOOD ELECTRICIAN
Finding a good electrician is not the hardest thing in the world to do, but if you want to avoid wasting good money on a bad result you need to do a bit of work. The obvious first step, for those who can, is to talk to a friend, neighbour or relative. Most will know of a local electrician who can be trusted and their recommendation is always a good first step. Alternatively, If you’re new to the Eastern Suburbs you can ask for advice on local community Facebook groups. Or you can plunge right in and select one online, or in a local paper or magazine. No matter which way you go you’ll still have to do your own checking, so first find out: • Exactly what sort of work is required. • Whether you need an electrician in the first place. • Whether the electrician is licensed and registered as an electrical contractor. • Where the electrician is based. • How reliable and trustworthy the electrician is. • What the electrician will charge for the job. In Australia, you’re legally allowed to change your own light bulbs and operate your appliances in the manner for which they’re designed. For most other work you may need to hire a qualified, licensed electrician.
Here are some tips that may help you in your search for an electrician.

BONDI PAVILION MAKEOVER TO BEGIN SOON Bondi Beach Pavilion is about to get a $38 million facelift after years of political infighting and community protest over the project. Due to commence in May, the works will transform the 92-year-old building’s interior and courtyards, while the gatehouse entrance facing Campbell Parade will be restored to create an inviting entry point. In addition, the pavilion will get a new roof of terracotta Spanish tiles, which were part of the original building's ‘Spanish mission’ and art deco mix. "It is the cultural and social heritage of the building that people mostly think about, but it also has architectural merit as well," Waverley Mayor John Wakefield says. The project has been designed by renowned architectural firm Tonkin Zulaikha Greer (TZG), which says it “aims to protect and celebrate Bondi Pavilion’s heritage whilst creating contemporary and flexible cultural, community and commercial facilities and spaces.”
OPPOSITION TO EARLIER RESTORATION PLANS
The original plans by Waverley Council were met with strong opposition from locals who believed the building was being over commercialised.
The campaign was spearheaded by famous Bondi residents including actors Michael Caton of 'The Castle' fame and screen legend Jack Thompson. In May 2016, hundreds of placard-waving locals protested against the plans, draping a huge banner across the front of the pavilion saying ‘MAKEOVER NOT TAKEOVER.’ The community outrage helped to topple the Liberal-led council, with Labor gaining a majority and Mayor Wakefield overseeing extensive community consultations, after which the Bondi Pavilion Conservation Management Plan (CMP) was put in place. The CMP, adopted by Waverley Council in June 2018, recognises the Pavilion as the centrepiece of Bondi Park, community life and grand point of entry to Bondi Beach from Campbell Parade.
A HUB FOR COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
A focal point of the transformed pavilion will be a cultural space called the ‘Bondi Story Room’, where the history of the local area, including its indigenous heritage, will be on display. More space will be provided for the art gallery and the music studios will be renovated in their current location. A renovated space for community radio station Bondi Radio will be created alongside
ARTIST IMPRESSION OF COURTYARD AREA the music studios and the pottery studio will be expanded with construction of a second kiln. The main foyer on the ground floor will become a flexible display and function area, while the current first floor community space, including the Ocean and Seagull Rooms, will be renovated and continue to be used for events and functions, with a renovated bar and servery. Outside, the
courtyards will be levelled and landscaped, with no car parking allowed. And there’s good news for beachgoers who want to ‘spend a penny’ – there will be new toilet, shower and change facilities along the northern wall of the pavilion.

Walking along Oxford St, on the left hand side, used to be a department store called 'Grace Bros', opened in 1939. The store was replaced in 1957 by a large building designed by Morrow and Gordon, and with parking for 120 cars; the budget was £500,000, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. In the early 70's the store's striking modernist exterior was documented by prominent Sydney photographer Max Dupain. Grace Bros dominated shopping in the region until Bondi Junction Plaza was completed in 1976. The store was demolished in the early 2000's to make way for the new Westfield.

Heading down Bondi Rd, the newest development which I call 'The Darlek with views to kill' can't be missed,. this is surrounded by other ugly developments which has now made Bondi Junction a concrete jungle! On the corner of Adelaide St and Oxford St there was a shopping centre known as 'The Carousel' which opened in 70's. This three-level centre of around 50 shops included a Safeway supermarket (later Woolworths) and, notably for the time, a food court. The centre was characterised by a large carousel in the middle atrium of the ground floor.

Now only a tree and plaque marks the spot, and many people just pass it by.

The first house in the area was Waverley House, which was built by Barnett Levey in 1827, on the current site of Waverley Street. He intended to live there with his family, but never did and leased it out to other people. The house changed hands many times over the years before finally being demolished. When Waverley Municipality was proclaimed in 1859, the name was taken from Waverley House.

My walk begins on the corner of Council and Waverley Streets and ends at the Bondi Waverley Bus Depot. An easy walk, that points Bondi Junction's past history and present developments. With this COVID-19 situation, it's important to exercise!
What's the Buzz?
Crossing the road, I head down Spring St, and pass Easts Leagues. The club was established in 1958 on the first floor of the iconic Bondi Beach Pavilion, and formed with the sole purpose of raising revenue to support and endorse the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club, and is now known as the Sydney Roosters. Easts Leagues has occupied the building in Bondi Junction since 1968.
Continuing down Spring St and crossing Newland St..I pass the Boot Factory. The Boot Factory, was a former shoemaking factory at the rear of Norman Lee Place at 27-33 Spring St and was completed in 1915 by William Sidaway and Son and was last restored by Council in 1986. It has been vacant since 2007, and in 2013, Council undertook significant remedial structural works to ensure the stability of the building until an alternative use could be found.

Waverley Council in partnership with North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club is building an advanced response lifesaving facility to improve volunteer lifesaving services at North Bondi. The new storage facility being built under the promenade will give volunteer lifesavers direct access to the sand and is in response to increased patronage at our famous beach. The North Bondi amenities block and Council’s beach gym will remain open during construction. The promenade and showers near the surf club will be closed for the duration of construction and pedestrian detours will be in place. The nearest showers are located above North Bondi kid’s pool. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in Spring 2020, weather permitting.

My walk ends at the historic Waverley Bus Depot, this Tram Depot opened in 1902. It provided trams that operated the Bondi and Bronte routes.
In 1994, Westfield bought a controlling stake in Bondi Junction Plaza from AMP and renamed it Westfield Bondi Junction Plaza. In 2000, Westfield purchased the Carousel Centre and the remaining stake in Bondi Junction Plaza. I take a detour down Bronte Rd, passing the 'Tea Gardens' opened in 1854. It was named The Waverley Tea Gardens and the surrounding area quickly took that name, quickly shortened to simply "Tea Gardens", which stuck for the next 30 years.
I pass Waverley Library, then onto Oxford St, where there are more high-rise developments. Fortunately, they have saved a beautiful facade on the corner of Denison and Oxford St.

The Waverley Cemetery Coast Walk project has won the Excellence in Infrastructure award at the 2020 Stormwater NSW Awards for Excellence. Waverley Council completed the project in late 2018 after a major storm caused a landslip and subsequent shutdown of the coast walk adjacent to Waverley Cemetery. The area had problems with stormwater within the cemetery and coast walk landscape. Council, in collaboration with Hydraulic Engineers from Group, designed a stormwater system that now captures and distributes stormwater through artificial rainwater gardens and hanging swamps. These gardens are planted with endemic plant species contributing to the unique coastline biodiversity. The stormwater treatment system and associated landscape works have created a functional aesthetic space for coast walk users with amazing views of the coastline and the cemetery.

The depot closed in 1959 for conversion a to bus depot. Today, only the southern section of the car shed remains, the northern section having been demolished. It remains in use as State Transit's Waverley depot. Look at extended walk of BJunc...passing TV's famous 'Bondi Vet' premises on Ebley St, and various community art projects . Don't miss WALKABOUT - CHARING CROSS in Ed 18...and remember to get out and walk, and appreciate the surrounds.
The project is now in the running to win the Excellence in Infrastructure national award to be announced mid-2020.

Exhibitors included the Pritzker awardwinning architect Glenn Murcutt and the multiple award-winning architectural firm Candalepas Associates, both of whom have used concrete to create stunning places of worship.
CONCRETE: a new look Who knew how versatile concrete is? Delicate concrete pots, doorstops, trays, planters, statuettes, candle holders, jewellery displays, gnomes – who’d have thunk it? With a history of over 3000 years, concrete was first used by the Egyptians in building the pyramids before the Romans produced what today is known as hydraulic cement-based concrete. However the secrets of concrete were lost with the fall of the Roman Empire, not to be rediscovered until the early nineteenth century. Of course, our harbour city is renowned for landmark concrete structures such as the Sydney Opera House and the Anzac Bridge, which are admired by visitors and locals alike.

However, as a material that has the rare quality of offering seamless textures, the extensive range of concrete objet d’art now available for decoration – as well as the more traditional use in home construction – is surprising as well as delightful.
Other outstanding examples of novel concrete applications included striking outdoor furniture by celebrated designers Adam Goodrum and Alexander Lotersztain while thought-provoking sculptural works were displayed by leading visual artists Jamie North, Abdul-Rahman Abdullah and Megan Cope. The infinitely varied surface and intricate detail offered by concrete was showcased by jeweller Inari Kiuru. The exhibition was produced by Adelaide’s Jam Factory. A quick online review reveals how concrete is being employed in many incredible artistic ways – and how small and inexpensive decorative items offer ‘on-trend’ décor to spruce up your abode with delicate designer touches.
Recent exhibition CONCRETE: art design architecture at the Australian Design Centre showcased its amazing aesthetic dimensions as well as its functionality. This exhibition revealed the innovative ways that concrete is being used by contemporary Australian artists, designers and architects in a variety of products, projects and works, from fine, hand-crafted jewellery to spectacular buildings.
Angelo Candalepas’ design of Sydney’s Punchbowl Mosque features a concreteringed dome with an ornamental ceiling; this in turn features 99 cast-concrete quarter-domes, each displaying one of Allah’s 99 names in gold calligraphy inside, as well as a 20mm skylight, so the building can be lit from outside, like a series of stars in concrete. Quoting Candalepas from the ADC interview: “<Concrete> can be made to appear as though it was a liquid, so if you are pouring your building into place… it’s like it is in suspended animation.”

On Jan 18, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip sailed into Botany Bay; but shortly after travelled North to enter what would be come Sydney harbour. It is thought that the first landing in Sydney harbour was on Jan 21, at Camp Cove. He had found a harbour that he thought could be settled and easily protected. One that offered many landing places to explore the surrounding countryside. In particular, on the southern shore, between what is now South Head and Circular Quay, there were many bays ideal for this purpose. This section of the paper is dedicated to news and information about these bays (from Elizabeth Bay to Watsons Bay) and their adjoining suburbs. Together they form some of the most historic suburbs in Sydney (and Australia). Broadly, if you are in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and can easily catch a view (or glimpse) of Sydney Harbour you are in one of those suburbs. Our aim is to keep you up-to-date with what is happening in this area as well a bring you snippets of history.

As soon as you walk in the door, you’re met with fine fabrics and classy taste. For The Bolted Post proprietor Anelia Bozinovska, her architectural background and keen interest in design inspired the shop design as well as the choice of clothing lines. “When I was looking for inspiration for the fitout, I aimed to make it a men’s oasis,” Anelia explained. The name derives from the interior architecture: featuring over 1000 stainless steel bolts with impressive tall wooden posts of solid Jarrah, it gives the impression of a stylised forest. “It has a very nurturing feel while still being masculine and powerful.” Having lived with her family in Rose Bay for 30 years, Anelia knows the area well and loves the location so was keen to extend on her retail involvement, especially having also recently opened a ladieswear shop nearby in New South Head Road. “There are no menswear stores in the area so that’s why I was excited about the idea. And
people who buy here, come back – a lot.” Customers range in age from 19-90 years but all desire a smart, but comfortable classic or sharp look. The fabrics are soft and luxurious, mainly cottons, wools and linens. The top seller is men’s trousers. An amazing choice is offered through the extensive size range – from 16 inches right up to larger sizes (52 inches). “The younger men often come in, see the pants and grab them.” And The Bolted Post offers a quick $15 hemming service. For those looking for the rare and elusive two-pocketed shirt, look no further! “We specialise in them,” Anelia informs. The Bolted Post is all about fine luxury clothing and accessories. “We’re trying to build up a total men’s emporium,” Anelia enthuses. “We have beautiful products, very reasonably priced – especially for people who live in the area, and want men to feel indulged a bit.”

Mention the name Double Bay to someone in Perth, Canberra or Darwin and the chances are high they will have heard of it and know it’s an upmarket shopping village, on the harbour, not far from the centre of Sydney.

DARLING POINT, darling home Darling Point was known as 'Yaranabe' by the local Aboriginal people during the early days of the colony. It was renamed to Mrs Darling’s Point to recognise the wife of Governor Ralph Darling and later it was simplified to Darling Point. From the mid-1800’s the emerging gentry of the colony purchased lands and built their gentleman’s home called a ‘villa’ in Darling Point.

The 'Darlingpointians' were the emerging gentry of the colony. The new and picturesque harbourside suburb was a perfect place to create a good home for their families so that they could differentiate

In May 2009, I turned down Darling Point Road to inspect an apartment behind Richie's Cafe, and a sense of peace and joy flowed through me. It was a strange feeling, but I immediately felt at home, perhaps it was the tree-lined street that reminded me of home. The stone gates of 'Babworth Garden' excited me, and I was curious about the history of the place. I signed the lease and moved in straight away. I had no idea that I had accidentally become a ‘Darlingpointian’. Nor, could I predict that I would meet another 'Darlingpointian' six years later (in Orme House in Marathon Ave) and marry him 9 years later at that same location.
New Tenancy Laws
During March, major changes to the residential tenancy laws take effect, with the new Residential Tenancies Regulation 2019 accompanied by amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act 2010. These are set to improve the position of tenants. For example, rent increases for continuing leases will be limited to once every 12 months. However, if a tenant breaks a lease early, mandatory set fees will apply to fixed-term agreements that are three years or less. This applies to agreements entered into from Mar 23, 2020.

The break fees are: • Four weeks rent if less than 25% of the lease had expired. • Three weeks rent if 25% or more but less than 50% of the lease had expired. • Two weeks rent if 50% or more but less than 75% of the lease had expired. • One week’s rent if 75% or more of the lease had expired. So, for example, in a 12-month tenancy agreement, a tenant would only be required to provide one week’s rent to their landlord to end their agreement early, if nine months (ie 75%) of the agreement had expired.

CPM MAKES STRATA MANAGEMENT EASIER RECTIFICATION ORDERS
Also from Mar 23, NSW Fair Trading will have new powers to resolve disputes between tenants and landlords over repairs, maintenance and property damage. This includes issuing rectification orders, a process which will also aim to support both tenants and landlords in resolving disputes over such matters.
SMOKE ALARMS
All NSW landlords will need to ensure that smoke alarms installed in the rented property are in working order or they can be penalised. To ensure smoke alarms are working properly, a landlord must: • Carry out annual checks. • Replace removable batteries in all smoke alarms in the period specified by the manufacturer, otherwise annually. • Repair or replace a smoke alarm that is not working within two days of becoming aware that it is not working. • Replace a smoke alarm within 10 years from the manufacture date, or earlier if specified by the manufacturer. Adopting a Common Property Memorandum (CPM) can deliver several benefits for owners corporations and strata managers. Gary Adamson, Managing Director, Strata Management Services NSW, and REINSW Strata Management Chapter Committee Chairperson was part of a strata management working group that introduced the CPM.
WHAT IS THE COMMON PROPERTY MEMORANDUM?
The Common Property Memorandum is a publicly available document that specifies who is responsible for the maintenance, repair or replacement of any common property. It details responsibilities for everything from balconies, electrical, ceilings and courtyards to flooring, windows, plumbing and parking. The prescribed common property memorandum can be uniformly applied to any strata scheme. The CPM document cannot be modified except to exclude specified items that are not applicable or present at the property. Adamson says while the CPM document is only four pages long, it contains enough
detail and is specific enough to meet the needs of any strata scheme.
KEY BENEFITS
Adamson says the key benefits of adopting a CPM include providing certainty around common property responsibilities and making strata management administration easier. “A CPM makes everything uniform for the strata schemes where it is adopted. From a strata management point of view, strata managers won’t need to move between different reference documents for each property. By having the CPM in place for all the properties they manage they will save on administration time.”

Navigating our hospital and healthcare systems can be emotionally exhausting and overwhelming. A growing number of people seek out someone independent to help. Known as ‘patient advocates’ these personal representatives can speak – hence advocate, on behalf of the patient and/or their family. As a result, not only can health outcomes be improved but also stress is reduced. By accessing the correct medical path in a timely and effective manner, such advocates can literally add years to someone’s life. When Dorothy Kamaker’s mother was at risk of dying from poor medical management, Dorothy knew she had to intervene: “The ageism and lack of collaboration were diabolical.” As a result of Dorothy’s expertise and efforts, her mother enjoyed nine more good years with her husband and family. In addition to intensive care nursing qualifications, Dorothy enhanced her skills by graduating as an independent patient advocate –making her perfectly positioned to advise on medical treatment and hospital management. “It’s not about being the loudest voice in the room – it’s about knowing your rights, having a plan,and working with people in the health system to get a good result. An Up-and-Coming Classic: Porsche 911 Turbo
What does that mean in the driver world? Resistance to destabilising forces for the driver, which is great, but probably equally as important outstanding fun in the corners.
This 911 Turbo Porsche was in the workshop getting its usual loving attention, and even in an environment of other Porsches, hi-end cars and classics, you can see immediately, this is a special Porsche. Josh looked at it and said – “write about that, it’s special.”

The news is that Porsche is shifting to an allturbo family, so in true classic tradition, this Porsche is the one that alters everything for a generation of new cars.
Martine Kwan, bought herself a Porsche 911 which was later converted to become her racing car. She is now an FIA licensed race car driver. She says it is fabulous to drive a Porsche and driving with a group of Porsche enthusiasts is even better.

The development of Porsche's first turbocharged version of the Model 911 began in 1972. A prototype of the first 911 Turbo was unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1973 to test the market potential of the design. The production version was released at the Paris Auto Show in 1974 and was finally put into production in Europe for the model year 1975 and marketed simply as the "911 Turbo".
They are calling it a “liveable super car” that does 0-100 in 2.6 seconds! That will get you off first at the lights! It is one of the quickest cars in the world that is not a racing car! Tory Hagan calls it a “serious weapon.” He loves it and wants one! August Achleitner the head of the 911 development admits “these figures are rather on the conservative side.” It is traditional that Porsche’s claims can be beaten but “it is ballistically quick.”
The first 911 Turbo had a comparatively large 3.0 litre engine, ‘whale tail’ spoiler and trademark wide bodywork. In 1993 the 993-generation 911 Turbo was given another turbocharger and four-wheel drive.
It seems to be a secret no-one is really talking about. There was not much to find out. I did find out there are complaints about the cup holder. At least there are two of them and neither of them particularly accessible to the driver and it has a bit more carpet!
The 3.8 litre twin-turbo horizontally opposed engine at the rear produces 540 hp and maximum torque of 486 lb ft. With Launch Control, the 911 Turbo accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. The top track speed is 198 mph.
There’s a brilliant innovation in the door handle (pictured right). It has a mechanism, that when you pull the handle on the inside, the door opens all the way. It’s a release spring not exactly an opening handle and, you don’t have to push it. I drive a Mercedes 2-door with a very big, heavy door. I’d like that release mechanism on my doors. It’s brilliant and seems obvious.
Porsche’s current 911 Turbo sports three turbochargers when it is introduced later in 2013. Since its debut at the 1963 Frankfurt motor show, one million 911s have been built, and Porsche claims that 70% of these are still roadworthy. The millionth 911 has been kept by Porsche, and will reside in its collection after a world tour.

JNC CELEBRATES DIVERSITY Harmony Day, March 21, is more than just a one-off event for JNC. Your local community services organisation celebrates the diversity of our community every day.
Many people who access JNC programs or information services or work as volunteers were born in other countries. In the Randwick and Waverley LGAs, in addition to English, languages spoken at home include Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Greek, Ger man, Hebrew, Italian, Indonesian, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Cantonese. In February, we celebrated mother languag es in our local community on International Mother Languages Day. From March 17-24, JNC is holding an exhibition of Harmony Day posters at Lionel Bowen Library in Maroubra featuring our community members. Vietnamese musicians, a crosscultural ukulele group and the Sydney Street Choir will entertain the community. JIFF Short Film Fund The Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF) is thrilled to announce the return of its Short Film Fund in 2020.
Successfully launched in 2017, the Fund was established to provide funding to Australian filmmakers for the completion of a Jewishthemed short film (narrative, documentary or animation).
Robert Kohn, Manager of Surry Hills popular op shop, Bargain Bazaar, is a busy man. When we caught up with him, he was plotting how to best lay out new offerings for the pop-up furniture shop he recently opened across the road in Cleveland Street. “With baby boomers downsizing and decluttering we are offered lots of furniture and decorative items. It’s great to have somewhere to properly showcase these donated goods” he said. The stores, staffed by volunteers, raises over $100,00 annually. Profits are distributed to several local charities in the Surry Hills and Redfern area. “It’s a lot of money from things nobody wants any more” he said.
“People say it’s the best opportunity shop in Sydney. Local clients scour the shelves regularly as well as stopping by for a chat and the social contact contributes to the friendly atmosphere” said Kohn. Organisations to benefit include: South Sydney Police Boys Club, Women and Girls Refuge - Redfern, Syd Childrens Hospital, Courage to Care, Aust Cancer Research, Diabetes and Stem Cell Research – University of NSW. In 2019, the Fund was awarded to local filmmakers Karen Pearlman and Joel Kohn, whose films I want to make a film about women and The Mirror had their World Premiere screenings at JIFF 2019. 2017 winner, Still Alive (dir. Anita Lester), has gone on to great international success, with screenings at film festivals around the world, and a recent licensing by Yad Vashem to screen as a part of their digital exhibition. In 2020, a total grant pool of $10,000 is available for the production of two short films (narrative, animation or documentary) incorporating a Jewish theme, character or story arc. We are seeking treatments and scripts for films under 10 minutes that are universally engaging and entertaining, and able to resonate with audiences from all backgrounds. “We are excited for JIFF to continue to be a catalyst for the production of great Australian short films to be shared on the big screen, providing a launching pad for their international recognition,” JIFF artistic director Eddie Tamir. Building on a 30 year history of Jewish film festivals in Australia, JIFF has established itself at the forefront of the world’s biggest and
most successful Jewish film festivals. Cementing its reputation for delivering international cinema of supreme quality, the festival is proud to showcase a diverse and world-class slate of film and event programming: from award-winning documentaries and dramas, to comedies and short films. Screening across 8 locations in 5 cities with audiences of over 55,000, JIFF provides an outstanding national exposure to a diverse and engaged audience. This year, the festival looks forward to continuing its support of Australian filmmakers with its Short Film Fund: a monetary funding initiative that aims to create opportunities for emerging filmmakers in Australia, and to encourage and support the production and exhibition of short films on themes that engage with Jewish life, history and culture. JIFF is committed to supporting and championing local filmmakers, and stories reflecting the global Jewish experience. The festival is seeking projects to a maximum length of 10 minutes, and is open to all filmmakers who are Australian residents. Applications for the 2020 Fund are now open on the JIFF website, and close on Apr 1, 2020. The allocation of funding will be announced in mid-May 2020, and will be determined by a panel of experienced industry judges. We expect the films to be ready for exhibition at JIFF 2020, with final delivery required by early October 2020. Further information

Free e-waste collection service
To help address the growing problem of plastics entering our environment and prevent unwanted electronic products from ending up as toxic landfill, Council has launched a new free e-waste collection service. Accessed through the Woollahra Council app, which provides residents with the convenience of being able to schedule a collection for the following business day or book in for a future date, e-waste can be placed neatly at the kerb or rear lane for pick-up. Once collected, e-waste is separated into various streams including metals, plastics and glass and then sent to recycling partners for further processing to convert back into raw useable materials. Residents can also offer their working e-waste up for collection to other residents by listing it for free on a community noticeboard. Overdue library book fines to be scrapped
Good news for anyone who has ever tried to withdraw books from the library, only to be told there are outstanding fines from those long-overdue books. From June this year, Randwick is scrapping overdue fines at its libraries. It will say goodbye to $169,000 in unpaid fines and encourage borrowers to return overdue books in a special amnesty.
Woollahra Council's Community and Cultural Grants program seeks to support programs or projects that work towards a connected, liveable, vibrant and creative community in the Woollahra Local Government Area.
The 2020 round of Small Community and Cultural Grants for community initiatives up to $2,000 and Large Community and Cultural Grants up to $7,500 opens on Mar 30. Applications will be received up until May 17, 2020.

It could spend up to $1.2 million replacing the clifftop boardwalk following the latest tragedy, the death of a 21-year-old female British tourist in January. The tragedy took place despite a number of measures already taken by the council after another young woman lost her footing and plunged to her death last August. Safety improvements implemented since that death include a new balustrade, signage and clifftop blitzes by rangers who have fined thrill seekers for disobeying council signs. But many locals believe more needs to be done. Council officers have ruled out CCTV surveillance as too costly. A report tabled at the latest full meeting of council said “it may be costly and difficult for the cameras to be continually monitored. Without monitoring, the cameras would therefore only act to record risky behaviours to be viewed retrospectively.” One avenue the council is actively pursuing is warning tourists about the dangers of Diamond Bay on social media platforms such as Instagram, Weibo and Wechat. Council officials have also been investigating and contacting websites promoting Diamond Bay as a selfie location. But a majority of councillors are now warming to the idea of extensively and expensively rebuilding the boardwalk along the edge of the infamous clifftop. The report tabled in council said a new boardwalk and viewing platform would cost $1.2 million.
“Library fines are often a disincentive for people to return items and/or use the library as those who can least afford to pay fines are often the ones who need the library service the most,” Randwick’s Director City Services Jorde Frangoples said in a report tabled at a council meeting. Councillors agreed to scrap the fines system in favour of a compliance process that uses restrictions on membership as a lever. For example, when items become overdue, “privileges” such as the use of library computers could be temporarily removed.
Call for sunscreen machines at beaches
Councillor Dylan Parker has called for sunscreen machines to be provided at major beaches within the Randwick LGA. “Two out of out of three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime,” Councillor Parker told a full meeting of Randwick Council. He suggested that Randwick follow the lead of Coffs Harbour Council, which had recently installed sunscreen vending machines. “The stations operate on a 'pay as you go system', dispensing 10ml to 50ml amounts via a touchscreen, with payment made via debit or credit card,” Councillor Parker told the meeting.

In answer to a question from Councillor Will Nemesh, Waverley Council’s Director, Community, Assets and Operations Emily Scott revealed that 20 spaces had been lost in one Bronte location alone. A further four spaces had been lost as a result of the Seven Ways Streetscape Upgrade and it was ‘likely’ that the South Bondi Amenities Project would deprive drivers of an additional 16 spaces. Ms Scott indicated the street parking erosion could continue with other capital works and development projects.

BARRY COLLINS OAM Councillors stood in silence for a minute to honour the memory of Barry Collins, OAM. Mayor Danny Said told the meeting that Collins was born in Randwick and went on to play first grade rugby league for Randwick. “The final chapter of Barry’s life revolved around his beloved Coogee RSL,” the Mayor said. “He joined the RSL in 1964 becoming a long serving Board Member and, of course, the Club’s Welfare Officer for many years. We are all indebted to the members and staff of Coogee RSL, for they were Barry’s Sydney ‘family’ in his later years.”
