was impressed upon by Heinz Classen, Managing Director of Siempelkamp. This dictates the foremost trend that the woodworking industries are heading to. While many market leaders for wood processing machinery concentrate on new methods of productive efficiency, in having more control over production with less reliance on manpower and raw

materials, wood suppliers become mindful of good working practices and the environmental impact on lumber supply. Watching this cause are independent trade and awareness groups such as the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) for certified legal timber and the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) for sustainable forestry management. All is not bleak as a survey by Bloomberg News reveals many investors shrugging off the economic current crisis and revisit opportunities in East Asia. More risk, more gain they say,

Market movers see the world economy getting back to normal and bringing with it greater opportunities in the near future. Financial leaders predict that the Chinese yuan and the US dollar will appreciate the most over the next year, which suggests that mutual relations will remain secure, and provide a strong bulwark for countries dependent on this stability for trade. Perhaps the industry is simply going through a hiccup in a long run of positive growth, but for now, industry experts agree that recovering markets look to Asia as the direction of the grain.

Japan’s lumber industry, which imports 80 percent of its Zealand after an increase in export taxes slashed Russian shipments by 55 percent. Akira Sekimoto, general manager at Tokyo-based Sumitomo Forestry Company, felt that the imports from North America and New Zealand will increase as supply from Russia are not reliable. The company is the biggest owner of forests in Japan and the nation’s largest builder of houses using timber. “We want to revive the domestic timber business but that won’t replace all the current demand for Russian supplies, so imports from other countries will increase,” Toshiyuki Akagi, director at Japan’s Forestry Agency said. Of Colours And Vivid gloss effects are the order of the day when it comes to latest trends and developments for surface finishing in the furniture and flooring construction sector. Contributed by Klaus Monhoff, head of decor management, EGGER Group.

Wood tones tending towards grey create lively accents in combination with different compatible colours.

Accents With Wood Grains The latest international trade shows, with the most recent one in Milan, Italy, gave an insight into this year’s trend for the type of decorations that wood based panels will be moving towards. Klaus Monhoff, head of decor management in EGGER group, identifies three areas as the trend that wood surfaces will follow. “The interplay of multiple colours and natural shades, the dissociation of woodgrain decorations and the combination of textures and uni colours.” In a brief explanation, uni colours are single-coloured decors. They are extremely

20 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

versatile and always set accents whether used on their own or with woodgrain or fantasy decors. With designs, the furniture industry has abandoned traditions. For the last few years, it has become difficult to find designs in the furniture industry that uses woodgrain decorations exclusively. The interaction between uni colours and woodgrains is currently developing into a popular trend. Across all market segments and price ranges, this development can be observed throughout the world. Wood frontal elements had previously been the norm for furniture. But now, more than one colour is predominantly present.

Now wood only creates the accents and that makes it important for wood such as beech, maple, oak or walnut to be a bit more lively and natural in order to exhibit sufficient vibrancy and naturalness in smaller areas. At the same time, the natural shades of all types of wood are moving a bit more towards grey. This allows them to harmonise better with uni colours.

Accentuated Wood Another feature of current design trends in the furniture industry is the use of uni colours on wood. White and grey are most common. This makes the wood tones unique without robbing them of their natural appearance. White and grey appears like a glaze in this case. Wood with this type of colour accents works very well in combination with colours such as Lava, Brown Grey, Olive or Dakar, colours which incline towards grey.

Multiple Colours With Texture A third current topic is the direct combination of texture and colour. This

Textures

Surface Texture: A Key Focus Mr Monhoff shares his thoughts about the current surface trends. What has become standard with the wood grains for the past three years is also being transferred to multi-colour surfaces. Therefore surface textures are now more important than ever. High-gloss or matte finishes are

no longer sufficient. New, elaborately designed wood surface textures create a modern effect. It can also show a natural character and can be used to offer completely new visual effects when used with different colours.

Innovations Regarding colour and materials integration, the Milan furniture fair ‘I Saloni’ confirmed

that the colour white, along with grey tones such as brown-grey and green-grey dominated in Milan. However, intensive colours such as blackberry or copper orange were also presented. The tendency towards certain colour and material worlds confirms EGGER’s motto that ‘Texture Meets Colour’ is the new trend. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 6103

interaction is inevitable if one follows the trend towards having more than one colour. For example, textures that are more commonly used for woodgrain decors are being applied to various colour decorations. This gives the different colours a unique appearance, as in the case when they are structured with wood pores or a matt-glossy effect. Experimental textures of this type have been well received by the furniture industry to date. The increasing use of mother-of-pearl for decorative design is another aspect of integrating texture with colour. With reflective pearlescent surfaces, multiple colour decorations provide a wider assortment of designs. Glitter and glimmer on decorative wood products correspond to products from the world of household electronics and IT, automotive and home textiles. Parallels to this can be found in many modern consumer products such as furniture computers and even cars. This trend towards metallic colours, which are realised as matte ‘shadow colours’ or slightly grey colours, can be observed everywhere.

This visitor centre has been busy with visitors, people who will walk into a timber dome on the scale of St Peter’s in Rome. Here, they will find an architecture made fully from recycled wood and wood material. The Palais de L’Equilibre is the dome’s original title. It was also formerly located at the Swiss Expo in 2002. With its status, Cern handles an average of 1,000 visitors every hour from the beginning of its operations hours. The Swiss pavilion at the 2000 Hanover Expo supplied recycled timber materials for Cern’s construction and the wood included Scots pine, Douglas fir, spruce, larch and Canadian maple, which enables the building to act as a carbon sink.

For all

Purposes The low viscosity and low volatile organic compound (VOC) emission of UV curable polyurethane dispersions make them ideal for spray, curtain and vacuum coater applications on wood. By Dr Marc Heylen; Dr Matteo Vasconi; Jean-Pierre Bleus; Dr Xavier Deruyttere, Cytec Industries

U

V technology had been used in wood coatings since the late 1970s. These applications had been based primarily on 100 percent UV curable products, formulated mainly for roller coater application, suited only for coating flat panels. With innovative developments, UV technology now offers a broad range of 100 percent UV curable resins and reactive diluents and has become the preferred technology for industrial parquet coatings, providing excellent adhesion and abrasion performances. The furniture industry needs to coat flat panels, slightly profiled pieces (for example: doors) and 3D pieces such as chairs or assembled furniture. Spray, curtain or vacuum coaters are better suited for these applications than roller coater. Unfortunately, the low viscosity 100 percent UV curable binders do not perform well in the spray formulations. Many attempts had been made to cut the viscosity with organic solvents with some success. However, the very low VOC emission, a major advantage of UV technology, was lost. During the 1990s, co-solvent free UV curable polyurethane dispersions in water (UV-PUD) were developed. The flexibility, adhesion and stain resistance of these coatings created new interest. The low viscosity and very low VOC of these dispersions also made them very attractive for spray, curtain and vacuum coater applications on wood. Indeed, a broad range of UV-PUDs are available for use as primer (adhesion and wood wetting) and for topcoats (good appearance and excellent stain resistance). Binders with good outdoor performance and binders for pigmented and high scratch resistance coatings had been developed.

Properties Of UV-PUD UV-PUDs are typically low viscosity colloidal dispersions (< 200 mPa.s) with a solid content around 35-40 percent. They can be easily formulated for spray applications. They provide good appearance to wood open pore finishes. Before UV curing, water needs to be evaporated completely to avoid blisters, whitening of the film and other defects. After water evaporation, the film may be tacky or tack-free depending on the polymer structure. This property is not so essential for the primer coat. For the topcoat, it is preferable to have a tack-free surface in order to avoid dust pick-up and a uniform gloss level. UV-PUDs designed for primers have excellent wood wetting and provide excellent adhesion, even on tropical wood. In topcoats, it is possible to obtain the required chemical and stain resistance as well as very high scratch resistance or outdoor durability.

Formulation Of UV-PUD As with all UV formulations, the choice of the photoinitiator is important. A liquid photoinitiator can be more easily dispersed than a solid one. A solid photoinitiator must be dissolved in a suitable solvent before addition to the formulation. A rheology modifier is necessary, even for low viscosity spray applications, to give ‘cohesion’ to the liquid film. This will help flow and film uniformity. The rheology modifier needs to be pre-dispersed at 50 percent in water, before adding to the formulation step by step. Wetting and defoaming agents may also be needed. A typical starting point formulation is given below: Parts in weight UV-PUD (35-40%)

Physical Drying Of UV-PUD Physical drying is the longest step in the wood finishing process with UV-PUD. A classical drying method is to use air at 3540°C with a low velocity (0.5-1.0 m/s) for a few minutes in the first stage and then air at 45-50°C with high velocity (jet-dryer). This drying process is far more efficient when using dry air. One of the most efficient drying processes is to combine microwave water evaporation with jet-dryers. Infrared technology is suitable only on closed pore wood surfaces but will induce bubbles in open pore finishing systems.

Wood Coating Performances In terms of how the various UV-PUD formulations perform, the very low VOC emission during physical drying is an essential advantage. Colloidal stability (tested at least 10 days at 60°C) of the dispersion is another important parameter. It allows dispersion

of matting agents and other additives in the formulation without the formation of grit, allowing longer storage of the dispersion and of the formulated product. Low viscosity applications (spray or curtain coater) are the first perceived advantage of the UV-PUD technology compared to 100 percent UV curable formulations. The application equipment is easier to clean when using products that are re-emulsifiable compared to tack-free products (after water evaporation). Strong adhesion to wood is achieved due to the fibre swelling and the right balance of molecular design (see Chart 1). For high performances finishes such as parquet (mainly primer) or kitchen cabinets (complete UV-PUD system), high scratch resistance (according to the Erichsen pen or ‘Hamberger’ test) is obtained. Typical values are 12 - 15 N (Erichsen pen) or 25 -30 N (Hamberger). Wood wetting is important for the surface appearance, especially for furniture finishing. Wood is a living material that may not be transformed to a ‘plastic-like’ material. This is particularly true for dark wood species. It is also possible to combine UV-PUD 1 with other water compatible materials in order to get a better wood wetting. High levels of stain and micro-scratch resistance can be obtained with the latest developed UV-PUD 6. And in comparison of their properties, while UV-PUD 1 is easier to formulate than UV-PUD 2 and 3, the formulation actually has less chemical and scratch resistance. On the other hand, UV-PUD 6 combines ease of formulation and exceptional scratch and chemical resistance. It has a high reactivity (35 m/min with 1 Hg lamp of 80 W/cm, compared to 5 m/min for UV-PUDs of the first generation) and is suitable for white pigmented systems. It passes 25 steel wool double rubs (white pigmented film of 110 g/m² wet) while a UV-PUD of the first generation only passes 5 rubs. Also, a clear coating (120 g/m² wet based on UV-PUD 6) has a Persoz hardness of 320 s compared to 230 s for the first generation of UV-PUDs.

And as Chart 2 shows, the level of chemical resistance (DIN 68 861 – EN 12720) is also very high (no visual stain with NH3, red wine, mustard, alcohol 50 percent, black marker, tar, shoe polish.) UV-PUDs compare favourably for outdoor wood applications as well. In ageing testing with UV-PUD 5, the European norm EN 927 was used as a guideline. For outdoor exposure, wood requires special protection, especially the wood-coating interface, which is very sensitive to the combined action of UV light and humidity. The first coats need to impregnate the wood and traditional acrylic emulsions are well suited to this purpose. UV-PUD brings advantages for the topcoat: excellent weathering, chemical and physical properties and good blocking with 150 g/m² (wet) instead of 250 g/m² (wet) for a conventional topcoat (see Chart 3). By comparison, UV-PUD 5 has a better performance than UV-PUD 1 of the first generation. Chemical, scratch and blocking resistances of both UV-PUDs are superior to conventional water based acrylic. UV-PUDs cover a very broad range of applications for wood coatings: clear and pigmented, indoor and outdoor. Due to their low viscosity, they can be easily applied by spray or curtain coater on non-flat surfaces. The existing finishing lines for solvent (if rust resistant) or conventional water based can be easily adapted by adding

Focus situation results in a shortage of supplies and increasing labour cost. Demands for the creation and utility of an automated system on this segment of veneer production became unavoidable.

Application With Automation For progress within the industry, initiatives on developments for the pre lay-up process are based on automation. Raute’s own solution is on using robotic technology, a different type of veneer handling head, and simplified designs for the conventional automatic veneer feeder application. Using automated applications, thin veneers of varying quality, even those that are below 1.2 mm in thickness can be processed. During production, data can be input via digital format into the automation. The idea is to concentrate manpower such that one production line needs one operator, as opposed to a scenario of having several operators working on a

A Traditional Practice Veneers prepared for the pre lay-up procedure are typically long grain, face, back and long core grades of plywood. Conventional method of using roller glue spreaders for the gluing of plywood to create veneers is widely used. In the

case of a manual lay-up with a roller glue spreader, veneers to be laid without glue must first go through a procedure prior to the actual lay-up. This is meant to improve the efficiency of the manual lay-up process. For some producers, this process has not yet been automated due to the difficulties in the development of its modular applications, such as the handling of thin veneers, the low quality of back face veneer and the large variety of plywood constructions. However, the recent economic

The production line can be constructed with combined feeding and stacking sections operated by simple Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) procedures. This line can also include a traditional box vacuum stacker and the number of bins for veneer stacks depends on the manufactured plywood construction. At this point, feeding bins are equipped with special veneer lifting devices and one of the bins will be a designated stacking bin, usually for pre laid-up veneers. In the case of production at a lower capacity, which requires careful handling of larger veneer sizes, automated technology will also be applied in the pre lay-up process. A simple automation

Focus on both surface and core veneers. Another convenient trend for glue extruders is the ability to apply more than one type of glue to the interior veneer plywood. A dual-head LEG can apply more reactive glue to the core layers and reduce pressing time. The glue extract unit can be equipped with a mini mixer, which can produce small batches of modified glue just prior to its application.

Benefits In Maintenance Maintenance time disrupt operations and translate to productive inefficiency. Some automation, like the LEG, is equipped with an automatic washing system to ensure a seamless operation. A ‘quick wash’ can be done in a few minutes. This short break increases the actual run time of a veneer gluing line.

a time consuming and sticky issue. Machinery for the gluing process must be simple to use and cater to all types of glue mixtures otherwise wastage becomes unavoidable. For the industry, considerations to note for today’s gluing process are on efficiency and cost savings with less glue and raw material wastage. Another important point is on accuracy during the glue spread process. The Liquid Extruder for Gluing (LEG) is a glue spreading application that is in constant operation. This means it provides more time running in operation than in service maintenance. The machine caters to a process whereby one side of the veneer receives gluing, giving lay-up lines more versatility and flexibility. The glue-spreading unit can be utilised in both complex, automated or simple lay-up applications.

Spreading Accuracy For glue distribution, accuracy is inversely related to wastage. A good glue extruder’s

30 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

head must be designed to provide a precise and uniform spread over the veneer’s surface and work effectively with PF, UF and MUF glues. Compared to earlier models of extruders, modern glue extruders are PLC controlled, and are designed for accuracy. For the LEG model, a mass flow meter constantly controls the flow of the glue, transmitting data to the PLC and the glue pump. This ensures that the glue is spread consistently. Technological progress caters to convenience with the flexibility in veneer gluing. Extrusion processes can be temporarily stopped for production reasons while veneers run through the belts. Different spread values can also be set for veneers within the same panel, and specific extruder models have dual head units for different intensities of glue spreading. Additionally, different types of glue can be used on the same veneer panel. An example is when different glue is spread

Environmental Consciousness Improving productive efficiency and saving natural resources is a trend for the woodworking industry. 3D Production Veneer

Wood in the third dimension: What was once possible only for metal, plastic and similar materials can now be applied to veneers. By Jörg Förster, the MD of Reholz, and Malte Herrman, head of marketing, Danzer Group

T

hree dimensional (3D) veneer mouldings have a genuine wooden surface with face quality and are stable to breakage or bending due to its three dimensional nature. The wood’s structure and the veneer’s texture are retained in the process. These veneers consist of strips that can both be bent and offset against each other, creating the concept of a third dimension. Jörg Förster, the MD of Reholz explains: “In order to achieve this elasticity, the rear of the veneer strips is glued with lateral threads.” Gluing 3D veneers on top of each other in several layers produces the required stability. This lightweight moulding technique is used frequently in the furniture industry for chairs and rounded furniture fronts, and is usually applied to vehicle interiors by the automotive industry. With this technology, many designers and furniture manufacturers have been given opportunities for producing designs and shapes in chairs, tables, doors, chests of drawers and decorative bowls. Since 2004, more than 100 different 3D veneer products have been introduced in 20 countries around the world in recent years.

3D Veneers, Industrial Scale Since the start of its industrial production in 2004, demand for 3D veneers has grown every year. The last five years saw Reholz working on a growing number of new projects, which were launched on the market. Growth remains high because only a small market potential has been exploited to date.

Current Biggest Market The greatest demand for 3D veneers is currently coming from the furniture industry for chairs as well as the automotive industry for use in vehicle interiors. The main sales markets are Europe, Asia and North America. More and more interest in products with 3D veneers is coming from the sport and leisure sectors such as for skateboards, as well as from consumer electronics, where companies produce devices with haptic wooden surfaces. Another area of increasing importance for the prospective use of 3D veneers is carcass furniture, such as office, living room or kitchen furniture with front panels made of 3D veneers. Gubi, a Danish company, has used 3D veneers to

Infinity by OMP group of Italy uses the material in the manufacture of its Loop chair, which was on display during the Interzum trade fair. The European Veneer Conference was equipped with 48 of these chairs.

Directions And Challenges For Wood Veneer The veneer industry, along with the broader economy, is facing major challenges. In addition to decreasing costs and adapting capacities to the current situation, innovative products and customer services are key success to overcoming economic challenges and remaining competitive in the long term. Veneer have to offer genuine value added. This means that in addition to their decorative properties, veneer also has to exhibit extra functional, innovative and ecological features. This is particularly important for architects, designers and interior decorators. Veneer is used whenever individuality, elegance and a natural character are required. At the same time, veneer has the advantage of being able to assume a functional role, for example, since it supports lightweight constructions. Veneer products also have to have innovative properties so that they can open up new applications and designs possibilities. Certified wood products are becoming increasingly important. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certificates have become an important selling point for wood products because they guarantee that the timber originates from forests that are managed sustainably, legal and in a socially responsible manner. The demand for FSC certified timber products is increasing worldwide, especially when architects, furniture manufacturers and consumers require such proof.

also won awards, is a selection of Vinterio’s wooden surfaces in three-dimensional mouldings. This wooden surface offers new standards in individual surface designs with uniform, repeatable patterns. The product line has numerous advantages over conventional wooden surfaces and benefits customers. This has been acknowledged independently with two awards: the “Interzum Award: Intelligent Material & Design” and the “IF Material Award.”

Future applications Research for future applications of 3D veneers is being carried out. One research goal is to extend the degree of material deformation of 3D veneers so round or undulating veneers can be produced. Veneers,

Past & Present Ancient Egyptians were the first to use veneer. Tutankhamen’s tomb was found with beautiful woodwork on it. Veneer, in simple words, is just the thin peel extracted from wooden logs or flitch. This can be extracted from hard and soft wood tree species. By Shiv Kumar Shet, Senior Manager, Biesse Manufacturing

T

here are certain standards to be kept when size and other characteristics are concerned. Relative to size, the log/flitch needs to be at a minimum of 28 cm under the bark at the smaller end, and at a maximum of 65 cm on the centre. Other defects like roundness cannot be more than 15 percent between the minimum and maximum sizes from the points of reference. Defects due to living organisms like termites and fungus, are also not allowed. Veneer is cut by various methods such as rotary cut, half round cut, rift

34 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

cuts, flat and quarter sliced methods. It needs to be carefully extracted from particularly selected wood. Generally, plywood and veneer involves high cost and high quality materials. The cost is reduced when the plywood is multilayered. The density, grain, minerals, knots and several other factors are criteria to be satisfied prior to achieving a good veneer product. Coach wood, Blackwood, alpine ash, flooded gum, mahogany, silver oak and blue gum are some of the wood species usually chosen for veneer production because of their excellent

finished appearances. Other factors for consideration are the durability and shelf life of these raw woods. The debarked wooden log needs to be heated in hot water or steam baths (up to 90-100 oC). This procedure can be executed by having tanks with good thermal conductivity to heat the wood quickly, leading to electricity savings and also to maintain the temperature for long periods. The reason for heating is to allow the veneer to peel easier. Heat will cause the log to become more plastic and pliable. In addition, the quality of the veneer is higher when it is heated well, while the lifespan of the knives and other tools used is also prolonged when the veneer is easier to extract. With a channelling conveyor mechanism, the log should be transferred to the peeling machine (usually a lathe). The slicing can be done with a crosscut method, as it is the most effective when compared to other cutting styles. The log is firmly fixed onto the machine and the knives cut it at an angle off the width of the wood. As the knives go through the wood at a shorter travel length, a faster peel off is ensured and this results in a higher production rate. Cutting machines can also be upgraded with electric drives. The handing of the logs or flitch, as they are sometimes called, can be further expedited by using forklifts, cranes or hydraulic cylinders for faster clamping techniques.

Back To Tech There is no shortage of such machines today and with technological features always advancing, end users will benefit from a variety of choices to achieve production efficiency. However, quality comes at a cost, as it is only achieved through the use of the best procedures and machines.

Focus Wet veneer clipping is the procedure of cutting wood to achieve the approximate size before the drying process while dry clipping is the procedure of cutting wood after the drying process. Veneers with similar grains are subsequently joined together to achieve the desired size or shape. Faults occurring during this joining process are often because of improper moisture removal. With modern technology, the use of equipment to slice veneers in a faster, more accurate, yet simpler operation with computer-controlled devices is now common throughout the industry. However, the clipping of the wet and dry veneer to reduce production time and to ascertain a consistency in quality and size, is a process that needs further advancement in technology. Due to a large selection of wood species available in timber supply, this aspect in veneer manufacturing needs more professional attention. Veneers may contain moisture content (MC) of approximately 12 to 13 percent. The veneer must be free from moisture before it is subjected to usage or storage. Normally, a drying time of about 16 minutes could be good enough to obtain dried veneer. Woodworking companies all over the world have designed their own drying techniques to achieve the best possibly quality in veneer while cutting expenditure on power and other consumables or wastages involved in this process. Steam is regularly used for the drying process. It is radiated through fans and other blowing machines to distribute heat into the timber in a uniformed manner. Sometimes, Kilns are also used for this purpose. Drying large quantities of wood may need a handling and temperature control systems to maintain the optimum atmosphere. Temperature control is important because if neglected, it can result in unwanted shrinkage or veneer splitting due to the peeling of raw material.

Packing is one of the most important aspects in veneer handling before supplying to end-users. Veneer made from rotary machines during peeling tends to curl or buckle. They have to be compressed in neat stacks and concealed in tightly packed containers to avoid further damages during transportation, exposure to weather or other afflictions. This will maintain its quality.

Natural Charm Furniture made with veneer gives an appearance of solid wood. It has advantageous assets as compared

to other wood, such as lower cost, wider variety and lighter but more durable qualities. Contemporary social issues provide veneer producers opportunities to improve their manufacturing techniques into more efficient and environmentally friendly methods of production. Veneer face competition from substitutes for solid panel applications and manmade panels. However, the true beauty of veneer is its stability, practicality, availability and economy, and these features will remain as unbeatable characteristics. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 6106

Technology Precise Instruments:

CNC Technology

With skilled craftsmen dwindling in numbers, CNC machines quickly becomes the technology of choice for large and small woodwork shops. By Augustine Quek

C

omputer Numerical Control (CNC) is for operating machine tools with computer programmed instructions. They are keyed into a computer and sent to automatic devices; typically rotary servomotors driving ballscrews, or other mechanisms such as a rack and pinion, or timing belt drives. CNC systems are used to execute a series of precise movements and operations. Recent developments such as automatic part measurement and parametric scaling of parts, allow an operator to upload a set of instructions. It also lets the computer calculate the exact cut path according to predefined parameters. The control of these machines range from simple linear positioning, complex contouring to laser cutting. CNC has been applied to nearly every type of woodworking operation, which includes sawing, routing and sanding.

CNC Routers There are large numbers of CNC designs and accessories for these routers in the industry, from router bits to machining centers. Wood

36 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

routers are generally bigger than metal mills, containing bed sizes up to 12’ x 100’ for wood routing. Most table routers use a three motor drive system (xyz) utilising either servo or stepper motors that drive the router motor via a gantry system. The gantry system isolates the XYZ movement in the top part of the machine with a stationary table holding the workpiece. Many CNC mills have the cutter motor moving on the Z axis, and a table which moves in X and Y for added stability. These movements are controlled using CAM software like Artcam, Mastercam, and Featurecam catered specifically for wood routers. Many manufacturers of CNC routers offer tabletops of various sizes, with vacuum or pumps for part fixturing, automatic tool change (ATC) spindles, digital AC servo for high-speed cutting, and gang drills for inline boring. Some even have coolant mist systems, vision systems for measurement compensation and support, tangential knife cutters and other options.

US company CR Onsrud, provides examples of combination tabletop and gantry type of routers. Its 5-axis G-series and HDseries feature moving gantry machines with super-large fixed tables. Standard features include touchscreens, 12-Position electronic rotary tool changer, shielded cables, widestance one-piece base, high-speed brushless motors, high-capacity cartridge spindle, and cast iron construction that provides up to ten times more damping than steel. Another valuable use for CNC technology is the positioning of shaping and sanding spindles on a feed-through machine. Shaping and sanding machines usually require several adjustments to a profile. With a CNC positioned machine, an operator can select a profile from a LCD touchscreen display, and position the spindles and fence for the next profile, so production can restart immediately. This can reduce setup mistakes, machine downtime and tooling costs.

Fiber Placement Macedonian-based Mikrosam’s MFP Automated Fiber Placement machine is a CNC fiber placement device. It uses a Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline (NURBS) based environment that is based on the industry standard geometric kernel, and is able to generate ISO G-Code for specific AFP machines. The machine can import models from popular CAD such as CATIA, SolidWorks, and IGES, define a custom curve over a surface, and generate courses in parallel to the original curve. Additional functions of this machine includes building custom ply definitions or use existing objects to define them, using different strategies to achieve the desired ply layup, and also define the sequences of layup for each course on a ply and direction.

Technology Laser Cutting An advanced use of CNC technology is the use of laser for cutting and engraving to produce intricate patterns and motifs, such as arch cuts on raised panels for cabinet, passage doors and windows. The marriage of laser and CNC functions offer the advantages of both technologies in one system. For example, Epilog Laser offers a standalone unit, the Zing Starter Series, for engraving and cutting wood. Digitally controlled air-cooled CO2 laser tubes power this unit, and it contains a file storage capacity of 64 MB. Its rolling buffer allows files of any size to be engraved, while the brushless, continuous-loop, micro-stepper motors uses linear and rotary encoder technology for precise positioning. Lastly, the air assist curtain directs a constant stream of compressed air across the cutting surface, to reduce flaming, scorching and charring of the material. World Lasers’ LaserReady CNC Laser-Router Table Machines integrates both router and laser, allowing parts to be laser-cut and routed. In addition to features such as Synrad CO2 laser, high-speed spindle, vacuum table and pump, it also has a laser scanner for reverse engineering and laser pointer for 2D template duplication. The software also allows for creating and editing of 2D elements that are ready for immediate laser work. Such integration of different functions into a single CNC machine is becoming popular. With the addition of more functions, a small CNC based work cell with fewer operators can be more productive than individual machines with one operator each. Work cells also promote teamwork by spreading responsibility amongst workers and are essential for Just in Time (JIT) manufacturing, which reduces or eliminates the need to keep a large stock of finished goods. The addition of modern computers has taken numerical control to a whole new level, allowing users to rapidly and easily program complicated parts that would have required a skilled programmer hours or days of work in the past. The fall in prices for computer processors in the last decade has also catalyzed the increase in the variety and ubiquity of CNC systems, such that they are now the mainstay in every workshop. Textured Surfaces Delcam, a CADCAM software development specialist, discusses the alternative methods of creating tactile surfaces. By Rebecca Freemantle, ArtCAM marketing manager.

From 2D to 3D, designers can mix and match various textures for a custom fit

M

odern computers and additions to existing programmes feature new interfaces from basic Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CADCAM) software. These aim to minimise the learning curve to current trends in CNC technology. Textured doors and panels are becoming popular in today’s furniture industry. These are simple to create using CADCAM software packages. Companies like Delcam, have entrylevel programmes such as ArtCAM Express, a versatile programme for small businesses. Its options offer a variety of strategies for CNC machining upon the completion of a design phase. In addition, these programmes are usually supplied with a tooling database that can be edited

or added to by the user at any time. An effective method to create textures is to use the shapes and sizes of CNC router tools, such as Conical or Ball Nose tools, to carve away wood material with the CADCAM software. This can be done by designing line drawings (also known as vectors) and repeating or mixing them with other designs, which will then be used for the router tools to follow (the toolpath). An alternative method to create extremely eye-catching results is for the designer to choose from a variety of textures available in the relief clipart library, or by importing a photo or image of a texture into the software. Programmes such as ArtCAM are compatible with a wide variety of bitmap file formats.

An example of how three dimensional woodcraft is worked on can be described by how an ArtCAM programme attributes differing heights to the lights and darks within an image to create a greyscale image, which is then converted into a three dimensional image relief. This can be saved and imported into a model file on which the designer is working. With advanced CADCAM software, users have more design freedom, as they can then manipulate and work with the three dimensional texture relief to create a complete three dimensional model using a patent pending relief layer management system. Additionally, the user can create a multitude of organic textures with its modelling and sculpting tools.

Technology to machining. In ArtCAM Pro, the user can view their textured panels with their other models, or furniture components, so that they can see how the designated woodcraft will look in comparison. These are just a handful of methods that can be used to create tactile FDM ENQUIRY NO. 6205 surfaces.

Continuous Pressure To Perform Momentum has been steadily picking up in the use of continuous presses as an advanced processing technique in panel production, with press manufacturers pacing the rate of technological developments. By Heinz Classen, MD of Siempelkamp

F

urniture and woodworking firms around the world rebound from the recent economic setbacks and return to their targets, encouraging signs of expenditure in investment for high performance equipments such as continuous presses emerge, especially as panel manufacturers attempt to capitalise on the volatile currencies and future-oriented market opportunities. This technology have been setting the standard for panel manufacturing processes, and significances to the industry are the better performances that

40 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

continuous presses provide in terms of increased productivity, shortened cycles and cost savings.

On The Press Continuous presses generally operate on higher speeds than traditional processes and this is perhaps the most significant proposition of the technology: that of a rapid rate of manufacturing and production while combining several different production stages into one continuous line. The basic principal of the continuous

press is that materials are processed on a belt loop that rotates on a cushion of air. This flotation principal is used to float large amounts of material on a drying bed and by heavy equipment movement pads. General pressing practice in the industry is to apply adhesives to the materials and then place them into a stationary press. The products are placed on the conveyor and automatically cycled into and out of the press. The open times on the adhesives are usually longer to accommodate the stop and go nature

Panels of the stationary press operation. Open time is defined as the time allowed from the glue application to the time it will form an adequate bond with the raw material, in this case wood. In case of an interruption to the process all parts between the adhesive application and the press are scrapped. Relevant continuous press technology today is aimed to reduce the possibility of such wastage. Companies dealing with gluing procedures for wood invest in liquid extruder gluing systems to ensure that glue application is accurate and wastages are kept at a minimum. New presses are designed to provide a continuous pressure to laminate two or more materials that require time under pressure in order to bond. The open time required for the adhesive can be adjusted to a matter of seconds due to the looping nature of the process. The continuous press process introduces two or more layers of material into the press. The upper plenum is height adjustable to provide the proper gap

Material feed, forming and pressing lines

between the belts to accommodate the material to be laminated. The plenums have a large number of small holes to introduce the air between the belt and the plenum, thus floating the belt on a cushion of air. With furniture and woodworking

companies concerned with the direction of cost savings and value addition, Siempelkamp shares with FDM Asia its disposition on efficient technology.

Recent Showcases With economic resources facing volatile market developments, the recent Ligna exhibition focused on concepts dedicated to lowering resource costs, clearly a direction the industry is moving into. Siempelkamp showcased its

material losses are reduced and lines can be smoothly adjusted from one product to the next. In connection with the thin board technology, the ‘Ecoscalper’ level out differences formed in older lines during mat forming. The ‘Ecopilot’ increases the performance of existing plants by improving the thickness tolerances. It measures the board thickness to a tenth of a millimetre and irregularities

New presses are designed to provide a continuous pressure to laminate two or more materials that require time under pressure in order to bond

developments for the efficiency of continuous presses. Siempelkamp’s ContiRoll product line had gone through several cycles of development, and the design of the continuous presses have gained market acceptance for a wide range of requirements. In addition, their ‘Ecoline’, range of products consists of five modifications to continuous presses that can help to save up to 20 percent in material costs. The modifications lower consumption of variable costs such as wood, glue, and energy, meeting the needs of the environmental and cost conscious industry. “Instead of extending production, plants producing wood based products are currently focusing on production efficiency. As a supplier we reacted to this need with our ‘Ecoline’ concept. We made a set of measures available,” says Heinz Classen, Managing Director of Siempelkamp. The package consists of the ‘Ecochanger’, which makes sequential product changeovers possible without production interruption. With this software,

are corrected with the distance control. The ‘Ecocalibrator’ improves thickness tolerances and provides an evenly distributed pressure so that the adhesive bonds are less stressed during pressing and the curing of the glue occurs homogeneously.

Savings With Knowledge In relations to what Siempelkamp deems to be modern production practices, information is key to cost savings. The importance of a step-by-step analysis to production procedure, although time consuming, is the future of efficiency in production. Software created for production and manufacturing should aim to lower operating costs. An integrated approach to analysing the hardware, software and the associated engineering will assist the production processes for raw board manufacturing. This includes the capture of the current plant’s efficiency and the traceability of production situations that can be documented in fixed reports. Siempelkamp’s Prod-IQ is a modular software that is configured to capture

Panels data of interest to specific audiences. Management, plant managers and operators, quality assurance, production planning and process technologists

‘Ecoline’ components are meant to increase the efficiency of existing plants. The measures offer operators potential to reap benefits, including less scrap, higher material savings, simpler handling, and up to 1.5 more days of run-time per year.

Better Drive In addition, Siempelkamp also launched the ‘Power DiscDrive’ technology. The drive system is a single-stage planetary drive to create a uniformed concept for power electronics and control. Fewer revolutions and moving parts result in little wear and increase the line availability. In addition, the process of standardisation reduces need for stock keeping as a result of the ‘Power DiscDrive’ According to Siempelkamp, manufacturers who operate several continuous presses simultaneously would appreciate the benefits of the various measures for cost savings and energy efficiency and consumption.

Modular Solutions Production Trends The modular nature of the Ecoline products highlights the trend of technological advancement in this industry. Individual functions are expected to be pieced together to meet specific customer requirements. This customised approach is a direction that suppliers look for cost cutting measures. The advantage, that such systems can be fine-tuned in accordance with key tasks. The priority of the tasks is generally defined on the basis of the specific commercial or income situation of the operating company. As the industry continues to find its way through the volatile economy, reduction to cost and raw materials usage, as well as minimal wastage and machinery lifespan extension are key concerns to major woodworking processors. Technological companies will continue to press for better returns through the methodical improvements on these factors. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 6301

receive only information that is tailored to their needs. Inefficient trends should be detected and documented at an early stage so that when querying historical data from the central database, evaluations can be made over any period and cross-referenced to data and process variables. This is also known as historical trending. For Prod-IQ, the trend window configuration will include presented process parameters, according to indicated importance and cross-referenced to relevant production data.

Tracing Material Flow As with ‘Just in Time’ management, many management teams require the close observation of the flow of raw materials to the finished product to make accurate decisions for production and cost effective measures. This is especially important in times of a weak economy.

Wood Works To Pick Up Pace Expanding rapidly in a volatile economy, Vietnam works to find its niche. Daniel Cai reports

urniture exports totalled US$2.8 billion last year, as reported by the Vietnam News Agency. It was an increase of 16.7 percent over 2007 and ranked fifth among Vietnam’s exports behind crude oil, textiles, footwear and seafood and in overall export revenues. The recent economic slump is the only dampener to its annual track record. To date, Vietnamese furniture manufacturers have been consistent in quality and prices, establishing a foothold as a strong contender against China. It prevails over other suppliers for several reasons, including affordability. Favourable investment environment becomes a draw for investors.

The Furniture Industry Facts And Figures Show: • Vietnam wood product exports have reached 0.8 percent of the world’s market • 2008’s key exporting market shares: – 41 percent to US – 28 percent to EU – 12.8 percent to Japan

44 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

Legally Certified Quality Vietnam is a furniture exporter to the European Union (EU), and complies with its regulations on material origin and environmental standards. As such, their certified furniture has been well received by US distributors and retailers. Many Vietnamese companies learnt to ensure a legal source of timber that conforms to Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. This improved their image in the marketplace. Significantly, 152 Vietnamese companies producing wood products for export have been FSC certified while Malaysia has 66, Indonesia 59 and Thailand eight. In an interview with Infolink, Frank Judd from Rainforest Alliance states that furniture manufacturers in Vietnam are among the most active for having a reliable FSC chain of custodies. More than 70 percent comes from certified sources. Vietnamese businesses such as Hoang Nam Company in Ho Chi Minh City and Ho Nai II Wood Company have invested in skilled labour, updated

technologies and designers to maintain their competitiveness. Constant market research helped Vietnamese manufacturers to increase their value. Some furniture companies invest more in skilled workers to further enhance their products’ quality for the niche luxury product market segment.

Sourcing For Legal Wood Following the government's decision to ban exports of sawn and round logs since 1997, Vietnamese companies shifted into the production of handicrafts and wooden furniture for export. Vo Truong Thanh, the director of Truong Thanh Company, said the industry imported 80 percent of its timber and this meant low profits and unsustainable growth. Foreign experts, who observe the Vietnam furniture market, felt that it would be stymied by a reliance on imported wood, lack of coordination among its players and the recent weakening of the US dollar. To deal with the problem, Dam Ngoc Nam, deputy director of the ministry

MARKET REPORT the chairman of the Vietnam timber and forest product association (ViForest). Taking the lead are businesses in Ho Chi Minh City. In line with the Government's forestation plan, a number of businesses have participated in forestation activities, two being the Truong Thanh and Khai Vy Companies.

Strength Not In Numbers Foreign executives working in the furniture industry acknowledge the Vietnamese workers were skillful and could make high-end products for niche markets. But they were neglecting this to run after mass orders, which brought marginal profits and left them unable to compete with China. Nguyen Thi Dien, director of southern Binh Duong Province’s department of industry and trade, said that 90 percent of the industry’s wood furniture designs were made according to customer orders because Vietnamese companies lacked designers. Mladenovik, a frequent participant in the Singapore fair, had his company focus on customising high value products for customers and that rapidly developed into a sizable number. He contends that small Vietnamese enterprises should develop family-sized production and focus on upscale product lines. Dinh Van Quy, director of Ho Go Nai Wood Processing Company in Dong Nai,

Kangotraveler

of agriculture and rural development’s agro-products processing and trade department, hopes the industry would create a sustainable development plan. The industry and trade information centre under the ministry of industry and trade stated that most of the wood being imported into Vietnam comes from Malaysia (US$135 million), China (US$104 million), the US (US$97 million) and Laos (US$84 million). “Locally grown timber accounts for 20 percent of the total demand from processors and craftsmen, the remaining 80 percent is imported. Often timber supplies in Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia are unstable, while sources from New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, Denmark are too expensive,” Nam said. Industry analysts have also advised Vietnamese producers to seek partnership with Russia, where wood, particularly White Birch and other key resources are abundant. In 1998, the government launched a forestation program to plant 5 million hectares (50 billion sq m) of forest for raw materials supply. In the later part of 2006, there were 2,463,710 hectares of trees (more than 1.6 million hectares were of economic value). However, in order to the earn US$2.4 billion from wood product exports that was registered in 2007, US$1 billion worth of raw timber had to be imported. According to Nam, the ministry of agriculture and rural development is building additional centres for timber imports and working to improve the industry’s marketing, capacity and competitiveness. Diversifying sources of wood will help to ensure stability in production and match increasing demand from markets such as US, Canada or the EU.

pointed out that most furniture manufacturer in Vietnam currently manage all production stages to produce complete products, limiting the amount of goods produced nationally. Specialisation, he also suggested, would be the key to increase production. Vietnam’s wooden furniture is sold all over the world, with the EU, US and Japan forming the largest markets, but the small size of local wood craftsmen’s businesses and their lack of organisation makes it difficult to purchase materials and fill large orders. Nguyen Luc, a representative of the Vietnam handicraft village association, stated that though Vietnam’s products were sold in 120 nations, 90 percent of the products were sold through intermediaries, significantly cutting into the Vietnamese traders’ profits. As a result, despite many advantages, Vietnam’s wood and furnishing industry still face challenges on catching up with China and Indonesia, the world’s top ENQUIRY NO. 6403 exporters. FDM

characteristics, gains in demand for composite decking will be encouraged by its close resemblance to natural wood, its ability to be cut like wood decking, and the perception that it is an environmentally friendly material – due to the use of reclaimed plastics in its production. Advances in demand for plastic decking will be driven by the high durability of this product, making it ideal for use in public parks, commercial spaces, and such facilities as dockyards and marinas.

Wood Decking Constrains Wood decking will continue to account for the majority of decking demand in volume and value terms. Demand for wood decking is forecast to rise less than 1 percent annually to 2.8 billion lineal feet in 2013. Advances will be restrained by heavy competition from other materials, although increasing consumer interest in tropical

hardwoods, such as ipe, will offer some bright spots.

Reasons For Growth The residential market, which accounted for 61 percent of total decking demand in 2008, will continue to account for the majority of decking demand through 2013, posting 2.6 percent annual growth rates. Advances will be boosted by consumers adding amenities to their existing decks, such as outdoor kitchens, spas and hot tubs, and areas for other activities. Not only do these larger decks require deck boards, many homeowners will install additional railings and other accessories to separate areas of the deck to enhance the safety of their decks by preventing falls by small children or older adults. Further gains will be derived from an expected recovery in new housing construction from the low level in ENQUIRY NO. 6401 2008. FDM

T

Wood-Plastic Composites Wood-plastic composite lumber will fare better than plastic types. Demand for wood-plastic composite lumber will grow 14 percent per year, reaching US$2.6 billion in 2011, compared to a seven percent growth rate for plastic lumber. Composite lumber growth will be fuelled primarily by strong demand for the material in decking, which is by far the largest application for composite lumber. Rapid expansion in window and

he cost/performance advantages of composite and plastic lumber, coupled with improved product appearance and ongoing interest in recycled building products, will help drive demand. Demand for wood-plastic composite and plastic lumber is projected to advance 10 percent per year through 2011 to US$5.5 billion. These alternative lumber materials are expected to continue to penetrate the building materials market at a rapid pace, particularly in decking applications. Both composite and plastic lumber benefit from their performance characteristics, such as durability, weatherability, low maintenance requirements and low life cycle cost. Demand for these products will also be driven by increasing consumer and contractor familiarity, a widening distribution network and product improvements that enhance appearance. Furthermore, ongoing interest in ‘green’ building products will bolster use of composite and plastic lumber made with recycled content.

door applications, as well as in smaller niche applications (eg: porches, site and leisure furniture), will also boost demand. Growth in demand for plastic lumber will decelerate from the 2001 to 2006 rate, a result of direct competition from woodplastic lumber. Significant applications for plastic lumber include moulding and trim, as well as fencing and decking.

Decking, Windows & Doors Lead Window and door applications are anticipated to post the fastest gains through 2011. This small segment is making inroads because of its lower maintenance requirements, durability in exterior applications and similarities to wood. The large decking segment will continue to see strong gains, and will be the largest

end use for composite and plastic lumber by 2011. Moulding and trim will also remain a key market, but will see below-average growth through 2011. Increasing market maturity in the plastic lumber segment will limit growth, as will a weak new housing environment. Fencing applications will see strong, although below-average, gains due to increasing maturity in the plastic lumber segment. All other applications are projected to see rapid growth from small bases. Playground equipment and site and leisure furniture applications are expected to see the fastest gains through 2011, driven by the environmentally friendly profile of composite and plastic lumber, as well as their performance and maintenance characteristics. lued laminated timber, also called glulam, is a type of structural timber product composed of several layers of lumber glued together. process protects the wood from attack by termites, insects, and fungal decay. Most untreated wood will decompose when four conditions occur: 1. High moisture content 2. Favourable temperature at 32 to 100 degrees Fº (0 to 37.8 ºC) 3. Oxygen 4. Existing as a source of food (wood fibre) When any of these conditions are removed, infestation and decomposition usually cannot

applications: • Wood in contact with the ground or fresh water. • Wood used above ground in contact with concrete or masonry such as sill plates on a concrete slab. • Wood used above ground where specified distances from exposed earth are not met, for instance, a floor assembly when wood joists are closer than 18 inches to exposed earth, or wood girders closer than 12 inches. • Wood providing structural support and exposed to the weather. This is usually a balcony joists without adequate protection to prevent moisture or water accumulation on the surface or at joints between members. • Wood floor framing in areas where damage can arise from exposure to termites, unless provided with methods of termite protection. • When used in locations where drying in service cannot readily occur, codes require that pressure-treated wood have a moisture content of 19 percent or less before covering or enclosure.

Pressure Treatment Categories Pressure treated wood falls into three broad classes, consisting of waterborne, oil-borne and creosote.

Copper Naphthenate and Pentachlorphenol are some of the common oil-borne preservatives that are readily available. One advantage of these treatments is that they do not create swelling, checking and splitting in the wood. However, there is generally an added cost compared to water-borne treatments. Examples of Oil Borne preservatives - Permapost Hi-Clear II – and Permethrin • Permapost HI-Clear II provides protection for wood intended to be used for above ground interior and exterior applications. • It is a two-component mineral spiritsbased wood preservative system containing Permethrin (insecticide that is effective against the Formosan Termite). It is also a clear treatment designed for high value architectural and engineered wood products including Molding, Millwork, Plywood, Laminated Beams, Lumber, and Timbers. • Common glulam applications include; decks, porches, trellises and balconies. Rosboro Hi-Clear II Treated glulam should be specified with a retention level of 0.055 per foot3 (pfc). - Permapost K-520 – Copper Naphthenate • Permapost K-520 is an oil-soluble copper naphthenate based wood preservative that is low in toxicity and can be employed with a high degree of safety. • It provides and ideal fungicide and insecticide for the long-term preservation of wood products in both ground contact and above ground uses. • K-520 is effective against the dampwood termite, drywood termite and subterranean termites including Coptotermes Formosanus. The treated wood is clean, non-corrosive to fasteners, water repellent, with a colour range from chocolate-brown to dark green. Rosboro K-520 Treated glulam should be specified with a retention level of 0.060 pfc.

- Pentachlorophenol • Pentachlorophenol is most common oil-borne preservative that is often used for treating utility poles, bridge components, cross arms and other industrial products. It is seldom specified for residential construction due to its restriction to exterior use only. • Penta as it is commonly called protects against decay fungi and insects. There are two types of Pentachlorophenol treatments available: ° Type A Utilizes petroleum distillates and tends to give wood a dark appearance. ° Type C Utilizes light hydrocarbon solvent (mineral spirits), and typically leaves a natural wood appearance.

Waterborne Waterborne preservatives utilize water as the carrier for the chemical. Professionals should note that glulams are manufactured from kiln dried lumber and waterborne treatments would cause the beam to take on high moisture content, which may result in dimensional changes such as warping, twisting, excessive checking, splitting, and raise of grain. This may result in an unacceptable finished appearance. Several typical waterborne preservatives used in building applications include: Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA-C), Alkaline Copper Quat (ACQ-C, ACQ-D, ACQ-D Carbonate), Micronized Copper Quat (MCQ), Copper Azole (CBA-A & CA-B) and Sodium Borates (SBX/DOT).

Creosote Creosote is a coal tar product containing a multitude of chemical compounds toxic to decay fungi, insects and most wood destroying marine organisms. It has a dark, oily surface appearance which generally cannot be stained or painted and possesses a strong odour. Creosote is primarily used for treating railroad ties, guardrail posts, and timbers used in marine structures.

Preservative Penetration and Retention Penetration is the measure of how deeply the preservative penetrates the cross section of the timber. Retention level refers to the amount of preservative that remains in the wood after the treatment process is complete. It is measured on a weight basis and is typically expressed as pounds of preservative pfc of wood. Generally, the harsher the condition the wood is exposed to, the higher the retention level must be. Retention and penetration requirements vary by species and treatment.

Species Of Wood For Pressure Treatment Trees and logs have a number of different layers. The two primary layers are called heartwood and sapwood. Heartwood provides most of the ‘structural’ strength to

50 FDM Asia  AUG/SEP 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

the living tree while the sapwood transports the sap from the base of the tree up to the leaves. Wood preservatives penetrate sapwood easier than heartwood. Southern Pine has a high percentage of sapwood and readily accepts treatment. Douglas Fir has more heartwood so modifications are typically required to achieve adequate penetration and retention levels. Incising (perforating the wood with small slits) may also be utilised to increase the penetration of preservative in heartwood species such as Douglas Fir.

Field Treatment It is strongly recommended that all fabrication, trimming and boring of glulam be performed prior to pressure treating. All field cuts, holes or beam damage that occurs after treatment must be field treated to protect the exposed wood material.

The potential for corrosion of hardware in contact with treated wood occurs when metals in the preservative (such as copper) are different from the metals in the hardware (the iron in steel, or aluminium). In a wet environment these dissimilar metals create a small electrical current that triggers a chemical reaction resulting in galvanic corrosion. To select proper hardware, the user should first consider the end-use application and exposure conditions. In damp or wet exposure, hardware in contact with pressure-treated wood must be corrosion resistant. Hardware includes fasteners (eg: nails, screws, and bolts) and all connectors (eg: joist hangers, straps, hinges, post anchors, and truss plates). Regardless of exposure condition, fasteners and connectors should be specified in compliance with the hardware manufacturer’s recommendations and the building codes for their intended use. It is better not to use galvanised fasteners with stainless steel connectors. Stainless steel fasteners should be used with stainless steel connectors. Galvanising (zinc) and stainless steel are considered to be dissimilar metals, which can cause the zinc to corrode when placed in contact with the stainless steel. This would result in the galvanised fasteners losing their protective coating faster than expected.

Hardware And Waterborne Copper Based Preservatives Copper-based formulations may be used in interior or exterior applications and include the traditional chromated copper arsenate (CCA) and new products such as copper azole (CA) or copper quat (ACQ or micronized copper). CA and ACQ have shown an increase in corrosion rates on mild steel compared to CCA and micronized copper. In damp or wet environments hot-dip galvanised or stainless steel hardware is

Materials Surfaces

Severe Applications Type 304 or 316 stainless steel is recommended for maximum corrosion resistance in more severe exterior applications, such as swimming pools or within five miles (8.04 km) of salt water. Stainless steel fasteners are generally required for lower grade applications such as permanent wood foundations. Stainless steel is also a recommended option when CA or copper quat formulations are specified at retention levels greater than required for ground contact. Standard carbon-steel, aluminium, or electroplated products must not be

installed in direct contact with CA or ACQ treated wood. However, aluminium products may be placed in direct contact with micronized copper treated wood when used in interior applications, or exterior applications above ground.

Formosan Termite The Formosan subterranean termite is one of some 2,400 known termite species in the world. Originally a native of China, the Formosan termite are believed to have been introduced to the continental US by the military in packing crates shipped from the Pacific after World War II into New Orleans and a handful of other Southern ports. Today, Formosan termites can now be found in eight Southern states as well as California and Hawaii. atural or artwork? Laminate flooring is both, brought together in perfect harmony. It is not only due to its creative design that laminate flooring has become an internationally popular and stylish floor covering. Another feature is its superb ecological balance. This is because laminate flooring is made from wood, is produced sustainably and is easy to recycle and dispose of – a fact of which has been confirmed by the Fraunhofer Wilhelm-Klauditz Institut für Holzforschung in Braunschweig (Germany).

Inspired By Nature Laminate floors with wood decorations are inspired by nature itself. Sophisticated technologies are used to achieve an authentic design that brings woods like bamboo, teak and rosewood into your home without harming valuable tropical forests. To imitate natural materials as closely as possible, fibres and pores are incorporated in the decoration. The effect is tangible, because instead of being smooth, the surface becomes

a tactile experience. This effect is the result of modern register and porous synchronous printing, which can be used for wood, stone as well as metal tile decorations. Laminate flooring does not just look like wood; it is actually made from wood – from wood fibres and wood paper. As wood is a sustainable and renewable resource, laminate flooring is an ecologically low-impact product. Paper can be printed with the most diverse structures and motifs, which lends the laminate flooring its individual look. The floor gets its durability from the so-called overlay, the top layer of which is made from melamine resin or – as with parquet – from specific paints. Resins and paints are manufactured synthetically, yet they are biodegradable and therefore environmentally friendly.

Product Highlights BauschLinnemann: AC3 Finish Surface The Corulan laminatable finish surface developed by BauschLinnemann promises quality print and a pleasant touch as well as featuring AC3 friction qualities. Used as a flat foil with high abrasion resistance in flooring and for home, caravan and real estate applications, the Corulan surface is differentiated by its uniform decorative design for diverse areas of application. For example, the flooring, identical matching transition strips and skirtings, as well as panels are manufactured in a single colour-coordinated, decorative design. No overlay is used for the Corulan finish surface. This enhances the brilliance of the decors, despite AC3 friction values – the decorative design is not subject to greying. The finish lacquer ensures a haptic feel, while the use of specialised resins makes the foil resistant to splitting and offers lay-flat properties and milling characteristics.

The wood used to make laminate floors comes mainly from domestic and sustainably managed forests. As well as timber from forests, it is mainly wood waste from the sawmill industry that is used as a raw material for the core. In this respect, laminate flooring can be recycled up to a certain point. Thanks to intelligent click connections, laminate flooring is easy to lay and take up again. It is also equally simple to dispose of. Individual boards and leftovers from laying the floor can be disposed with normal household waste. Entire floors should be taken to a residual waste or recycling facility. Laminate flooring is bulky waste and can be used for either material or thermal recycling. Hardwoods & Softwoods

An Insight Into

Global Wood

Resources

Wood is poised to become more important as a raw material. Yet the global supply chain for wood resources is facing a set of emerging challenges. By Dr Jegatheswaran Ratnasingam

W

ood is often challenged by non-renewable materials such as metal and plastics. In spite of the competition in the raw materials marketplace, wood continues to retain its position as the premier material in the world. This dominance is attributed to several factors, such as its renewable status, environmental-friendliness, lowenergy resource, natural, aesthetic appeal and versatility. According to a study published by the International Furniture Research Group

54 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

(IFRG), the predominance of wood as a raw material is further strengthened by global environmental and green movements that are driving up the demand for environmentally friendly resources.

Wood Supply Base – The Forest According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the world’s forest cover stands about 3,952 million hectares (39.52 trillion sq m), or about 30 percent of the earth’s land area in 2008.

Europe (including the Russian Federation) and South America have the largest percentage of the world’s forests (27 and 23 percents respectively), while Oceania has the least (five percent). Two-thirds of the world’s forests are located in only ten countries, including: the Russian Federation, Brazil, the United States of America, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Peru (Table 1). Over the last few decades, the rate of deforestation has been carried out at an alarming rate – and the world is faced with a stark reality – the real possibility of a shortage of wood resources. Although deforestation is driven primarily by the need for land by other economic activities, the rate of afforestation has not kept up with the pace of shrinking forest cover. Globally, the dominant trend for forest products supply throughout the world is continuously increasing the demand for wood from a diminishing, or more restricted, forest supply base. As a rule of thumb, as the population base grows together with a growth in gross national product (GDP), the demand for wood products will also see an upward trend. As natural forests are cleared, degraded, or withdrawn from production for conservation purposes or other reasons, the burden placed on the remaining production forests increase. Considerable attention has consequently focused on identifying means of alleviating potential wood and fibre shortfalls. For some countries a primary solution has been to increase imports of forest products markedly, thereby redistributing demand to forest-rich countries. Other solutions have included increasing the levels of recycling, improving processing conversion efficiencies, increasing utilisation of harvesting residues, and establishing forest plantations – the so-called man-made forests.

Wood Resources & Characteristics

David-Stroud,UK

Generally, wood resources in the world can be categorised into two broad categories: hardwoods and softwoods. The term hardwood is used to describe wood from angiosperm (or simply flowering) trees and for those trees themselves. These are usually broad-leaved in the temperate and boreal latitudes, while in the tropical and subtropical regions, these trees are mostly evergreen. On the other hand, softwood is the wood obtained primarily from coniferous trees (mainly members of the pine and fir families). Softwood trees are generally evergreens,

higher density and hardness than softwood, although there is an enormous variation in actual wood hardness in both groups, with the range in density in hardwoods completely including that of softwoods; some hardwoods (eg: balsa) are softer than most softwoods, while yew is an example of a hard softwood. Hardwoods are more varied than softwoods. There are about a hundred times as many hardwoods as there are softwoods. The dominant feature separating hardwoods from softwoods is the presence of pores or vessels – visible in the microscopic structure of the material. Among the common deciduous European and North American hardwoods include the oaks (Quercus sp), beech (Fagus sp), ash (Fraxinus sp), maple (Acer sp) and cherry (Prunus sp). Important tropical hardwoods include teak (Tectona grandis), mahogany (Swietenia spp), ebony (Diospyros spp) and meranti (Shorea spp). On the other hand, the common softwoods include pine (Pinus sp), spruce (Pices sp), larch (Larix sp), fir (Abies sp), Araucaria sp., and hemlock (Tsuga sp).

with a few exceptions. Softwood is mostly obtained from the Baltic, Scandinavia, and North America and is the source of about 80 percent of the world’s production of timber. Hardwood contrasts with softwood in many aspects. Hardwood, on average, is of

56 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

Wood Utilisation Hardwoods are employed for a large range of applications including: construction, furniture, flooring, cooking, utensils, etc. Solid hardwood joinery tends to be expensive compared to softwood. In the past, tropical hardwoods were easily

Brandon Baunach, San Francisco,US

Although these forest plantations produce high yield of wood resources, its quality is somewhat inferior to the wood resources from the naturally growing forest resources. Despite these limitations, the area of forest plantations throughout the world is expected to surge ahead as the demand for wood, especially from the rapidly industrialising economies of China and India, continues to grow incrementally to fuel large industrial and non-industrial needs.

Christine Brennan Schmidt, Washington DC, US

Hardwoods & Softwoods

available but the supply of some species such as Burma Teak and Mahogany has become restricted due to overexploitation. Different species of hardwood lend themselves to different end uses or construction processes. This is due to the variety of characteristics apparent in different timbers including density, grain, pore size, growth pattern, wood fibre pattern, flexibility and ability to be steam bent. For example, the stepped wood fibre pattern, typical of Elm, makes it ideal for the making of chair seats where the driving in of legs and other components can cause splitting in other woods. Generally speaking, softwoods constitute the bulk of the wood used by mankind for many purposes, such as structural building components, furniture and millwork. The finer softwoods have found application for some specialty uses, such as in vineyards, etc. The water resistance of softwood and its resistance to forming cracks when squeezed in a vice, as well as its resistance to rot when left wet, gives softwood added advantages in terms of its ease of working over the hardwoods, for some applications. Softwoods are also the predominant raw materials for the large global pulp

Hardwoods & Softwoods and paper industries, which explains its importance over hardwoods in the global wood resources marketplace.

Future Of Wood & Challenges Wood will continue to be the salient raw material for mankind but its position is being challenged by other materials, such as metal, plastic, non-wood composites and others. However, the natural and renewable characteristics of wood gives it advantages over the other materials. In addition, wood and wood-based composites are poised to reemerge stronger especially with the global concern for sustainability and environmental degradation. Wood composites which are able to retain the wood-like appearance, but also incorporate properties that minimises the natural weaknesses of wood, is making its presence felt in

many applications previously dominated by solid-wood resources. The application of biotechnology and nanotechnology for wood and its products offers promising solutions to ensure wood’s dominant position in the future. The use of these technologies could contribute to better wood materials from standing trees through ‘gene manipulation’ and breeding sciences which could increase the timber yield from standing trees. Furthermore, such efforts could also possibly lead to the development of wood that has the necessary properties to ensure its unique position in the marketplace. According to the International Furniture Research Group’s (IFRG) report on the global wood resources, the application of these technologies on wood and its allied products has the potential to transform the material into the predominant raw material in the world.

However, research and development (R&D) activities essential to ensure optimal use of wood resources in high-value applications are limited. It is estimated that R&D budgets in the field of non-wood sectors exceeds the budget allocated for the wood sector by about 10 times, meaning research intensity in wood science and technology is lagging behind the other sectors. This is attested by the fact that patented innovations and scientific publications in the non-wood sectors far exceeds the amount in the wood sectors. While the sustainble supply of wood may guarantee its position in the global marketplace for some time, the lack of updated research in wood may limit its maket application potential. A concerted effort to enhance knowledge in the wood industry must be taken to ensure the success of wood as the primary raw material in the world. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 6605

The China Furniture & Woodworks 2009 welcomed 3,022 visiting representatives from 27 different countries, including Europe, the Americas, Australia, the Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Domestic visitors numbered more than 40,000, and they came from 23 Chinese provinces covering North-east China, the Bohai Rim and the Yangtze and Pearl River deltas.

Resilient Domestic Demand The highest number of transactions for furniture was carried out among home grown companies. Producers used

this platform for trade agreements, developing sales channels with local distributers and retailers. Dalian Yuanfeng Wood Products Company showcased their original design, the “Enjoy Furniture” series and concluded negotiations with several distributors for the Mainland Chinese market. Qinxing Furniture, who manufactures rustic style house furnishing, signed business deals with eight agents for domestic distribution as well.

Business Beyond China The Japanese National Furniture Alliance, an established furniture distributor organisation, concluded several business deals with local exhibitors and was the delegation with the highest foreign business transactions. Another notable exhibitor was Desen Furniture, a native luxury furniture company that carried out a large transaction with the Moroccan delegation. The presence of exhibitors from other countries also facilitated opportunities for the Chinese companies to network and exchange ideas for trade.

Woodwork Exposure International and domestic brands in the woodwork section included Gerling Automation, Great Field Machinery, IWIS Hard Materials, Giantway, Hao Mai Long and several others. These companies showcased technology for manufacturing and processing solutions. While Gerling demonstrated its Automatic Grazing Machine, for its resilience and efficiency, Hao Mai Long displayed its recently patented autonomous wood door-processing centre. The Hardwood States Export Group (HSEG) and the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) hosted the American pavilion at the furniture raw material supply section, where 19 American wood products suppliers participated. This is the second time that the China Furniture & Woodworks showcased the US Pavilion. Post-show statistics reported 43,924 in visitor attendance, a 22.6 percent increase in purchaser delegations as compared to the China Furniture & Woodworks 2008. The 15th China Furniture & Woodworks is scheduled to take place on June 10-13 2010 at the same venue. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 6701

Shenyang: AHEC 14th South-east Asia & Greater China Convention, June 11, 2009

Following the International Furniture and Raw Materials Trade show from June 5-8, 2009. The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) hosted the AHEC 14th South-east Asia & Greater China Convention on June 11, 2009. The Liaoning Furniture Association and 31 timber trade, design and architectural associations from East and South-east Asia supported the convention. Following an eventful pre-event networking session and dinner that saw more than 100 guests in attendance, there were more than 400 delegates who graced the convention the following day. They were mainly traders, producers, designers and architects. Two local television channels and several medias provided news coverage. AHEC Chairman Orn Gudmudsson opened the Convention, and spoke of AHEC’s mission and global strategies, as well as the current global export statistics. He further explained the relationship of the US hardwood industry and its exports to China. Mike Snow, executive director of AHEC and Alberto Goetzl presented issues related to supply sustainability and legality, US hardwood environment credentials, the Lacey Act and Responsible Procurement Policy (PPP) to the audience. A study was commission by AHEC and undertaken by a team of international experts that was led by Seneca Creek Associates, to affirm the legality and sustainability of US hardwoods. In addition, other speakers also covered topics of US hardwood for manufacturing and design solutions. Four speakers from China, Thailand and Indonesia gave

an updated report on their respective markets to the audience and stakeholders. According to the International Tropical Timber Organisation’s (ITTO) Tropical Timber Market report, China was facing a huge gap in timber supply and demand due to the lack of forest resources, with 40 percent of timber demand dependent on imports. The latest data show the value of American hardwood products exports in 2008 at US$2.5 billion, with China making up 18 percent of its market share. John Chan, Regional Director of AHEC South-east Asia and Greater China stated that AHEC would maintain its consistent messages of providing promotional assistance, technical information and legal sources of supply for US hardwoods. He assured the delegates that the US hardwood industry is mindful of forest management and that these resources are reliable long term supplies. He also stated that most Asian economies had faced a sharp contraction from 2008, and a weak recovery in 2009. Many in the industry are consequently suffering. Export demand has reached a new low level. However, China and members of South-east Asia will be expected to play an important role in the current financial crisis as these countries are among the world’s fastest growing economies. China and South-east Asia’s demand for timber products have been growing rapidly, due to a boom in the housing and property market. Mr Chan felt Shenyang would provide great opportunities for interior design, furniture and timber products ENQUIRY NO. 6704 manufacturing. FDM www.fdmasia.com | FDM ASIA  Aug/Sep 2009

FMC 2009, One of Asia's Largest

T

his year’s Furniture Manufacturing & Supply, China (FMC 2009) will be staged in conjunction with Furniture Manufacturing Premium 2009 (FMC Premium 2009). Held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from September 9 to 12, it is a part of Furniture China 2009. As an annual event that is held every September, FMC 2009 is one of the largest furniture equipment and material shows in Asia. An Exclusive Buzz The organisers will also host FMC Premium 2009 as a complement to FMC.

64 FDM Asia  Aug/Sep 2009 | www.fdmasia.com

Held with the intention to provide an exclusive business-orientated platform to specific audiences, professionals will have access to a privileged area that comes with extended services and catering facilities. It is also where exhibitors, suppliers and manufacturers providing highend furniture and raw materials can concentrate on networking and trade with their purchasing delegations. The shows benefit from sharing a location with Furniture China 2009, and are expected to attract more than 70,000 visitors from home and abroad. Furniture China will cater to an exhibiting space that occupies 10 indoor halls and 26 outdoor halls. It

occupies a total space of 220,000 sq m and will host 2,300 exhibitors. In particular, FMC and FMC Premium 2009 have been fully booked with more than 550 participating companies. The exhibition area for FMC will amount to 32,000 sq m while FMC Premium will occupy more than 6,000 sq m. Previously, FMC 2008 attracted more than 25,700 visitors, and 14,557 visitors came for the FMC Premium exhibition. More than 10 percent of these representatives were international businesspersons. With its emphasis on catering to international delegations, Furniture China 2008 attracted a total of 1,931 exhibitors from 22 countries. It was held in an exhibition area of over 330,000

Years Of Growth Despite the economic climate, FMC 2009 has been successful in maintaining its targeted figures to be on par with that of the previous year’s show. With regards to visitor registration, the latest recorded data states that 3,452 visitors have pre-registered through the Internet and among them, 2,244 registrants are from abroad while 1,208 are from China. A comparison with statistics from the same period last year reveals that this is an increase of more than 50 percent. The organisers, China National Furniture Association and Shanghai UBM Sinoexpo

International Exhibition Company, will be expecting a total of 25,000 professional trade visitors to FMC and FMC Premium this year. FMC will segregate display areas for easier navigation. Several display sections will be set up for visitor’s convenience. Office fittings, fabric and leather, upholstery furniture manufacturing, saws, blades and tools, office furniture supplies, gas spring and furniture panels as well as surface décor will be clearly indicated. The organisers view FMC and FMC Premium as more than a trading exhibition. Business to business companies such as ‘FurnitureinChina.com’ continue to mature. These online companies utilise different marketing mediums such as FMC and

FMC Premium, as well as the Internet, to maximise their resources and enhance the reputation of Chinese products and brands for international presence. The last five years in China have had professionals witness another stage of growth in the furniture industry. As reflected by several market watchers and independent organisations, the boom in the property market and its subsequent demand on Chinese furniture creates new challenges for this trade. Jointly organised by China National Furniture Association and Shanghai UBM Sinoexpo International Exhibition, the FMC and FMC Premium 2009 shall play the part of a significant contributing factor to the Chinese furniture and woodworking industry. 2009:

Upbeat Prospects In Vietnam

V

ietnam had enjoyed a record of progressive growth in the wood processing and furniture manufacturing industry since the year 2005, but the first half of this year had seen a reversal of fortune. This is in no small part due to the current economic slump the world is in. However, investors stay buoyant with visible confidence in this year’s Vietnamwood 2009 exhibition. Vietnamwood will be held together with Furnitec 2009, becoming an industry platform that addresses the needs and demands of the local and international stakeholders. Base on its record, this show is expected to contribute significantly to the Vietnamese wood and furniture industry. 250 exhibiting firms will be present, more than the previous show’s 245 exhibitors and approximately 14,000 sq m of the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Centre (SECC) showground will be occupied to facilitate trade activities.

Larger Showcase The fair will present advanced and practical woodworking technologies and

equipment to industry representatives, entrepreneurs, decision-makers, government representatives and journalists from around the world. Some of the featured industry segments includes woodworking machines, kiln drying and timber technologies, joinery, furniture, machines for veneered products and woodworking materials. Aside from product showcases, the exhibition will host a series of professional seminars for industry practitioners to share their perspective on the current events, their knowledge and experience in the areas of wood and furniture solutions, in latest innovations and market opportunities. Co-organised by the Ministry of Industry & Trade, the Vietnam National Trade Fair & Advertising Joint Stock Company (VINEXAD), Paper Communication Exhibition Services, and Yorkers Trade & Marketing Service, this event will also host international pavilions from China, German, Italy, Taiwan, and the US. Several major industry participants, such as Homag, Boark, Yan’s, APP Timber, Holz-Her, Hafele, Xinhuada,

Harbin Dongda, Qingdao Heroic and several others, will also be present. The participation and support from these companies will contribute to Vietnamwood’s worldwide importance and professionalism. This show is expected to match more than 16,000 domestic and international trade visitors with both domestic and international suppliers of the woodworking and furniture industries. Held from September 24 to 27, this show will look to build on the success of the last event, which attracted 15,956 professional buyers in 2007, and facilitate healthy trades that can bring Vietnamese furniture back on the global export ENQUIRY NO. 6702 market. Malaysia International Furniture

T

he Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) will take place from March 2 to 6, 2010 in Kuala Lumpur. For five days, industry professionals can network, develop trade, exchange ideas and view designs that the furniture industry has to offer. As with previous years, MIFF 2010 is expected to draw a significant number of international and local exhibitors and visitors to the fair. Despite the global economic slowdown, MIFF 2009, which happened from March 3 to 7, was successful in attracting buyers from across the globe, including trade delegations and buying mission groups.

Better Expectations MIFF 2009 recorded a total of 19,075 visitors, with 6,809 international buyers from 137 countries. International buyers came from the ASEAN region (23.5 percent), Europe (16.7 percent), the

Far East (13 percent), and the Middle East (12.4 percent). This was followed by Africa (10.7 percent) and the US (6.9 percent). Sales generated during the exhibition hit US$710 million. This result exceeded the organiser’s expectations and they feel MIFF 2010 shall prove to be better. More than 7,000 international buyers are expected at the fair. Foreign delegations from countries like Japan, India and Germany will seek to build business alliances with the Malaysian manufacturers. Exhibiting countries will include China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, US, UK, Turkey, Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia. Exhibitors will showcase their annual highlights and their progress for the global furniture market.

Escalating Directions Malaysia’s furniture industry shows

growth as potential demand swings towards the production of Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) furniture. Dato’ Tan Chin Huat, chairman of MIFF, remarked that Malaysian furniture fits the middle to luxury class segment. It is popular with overseas buyers who sought manufacturers that could meet the demands of producing for an average of 100 containers a month. Manufacturers in Malaysia saw a decrease in sales previously, during the first quarter of 2009, and they were compelled to reduce production. However, after the fair, business was back to normal and manufacturers had to recruit staff to hasten the production process for new orders received. Many manufacturers now look to a more positive MIFF 2010. The Malaysian government has high hopes that wood based products, particularly furniture, will be a major

contributor to export earnings in the years ahead. According to Dato’ Jacob Dungau Sagan, Deputy Minister (Industry) of international trade and industry, the government has set an annual growth of 6.5 percent for this industry. He added, “Timber based products, mainly furniture and panel products are estimated to reach RM 53 billion (US$14.9 billion) by the year 2020.” Exhibitors were satisfied with the overall organisation of the show and with the quality of the buyers at MIFF 2009. Mr S.W Jeon of Sun Safes, Korea, has exhibited in MIFF eight times and he remarked that they had signed up five new partners. According to a representative of the Japanese delegation, the group was impressed with the quality of Malaysian furniture and ordered 400 containers during MIFF 2009. Mr Mahesh Jain of Stellar Furniture,

India, said: “This is our fourth year participating in MIFF and we are definitely coming back in 2010.” Another visitor who is upbeat about coming back is Guers Lyes of Algeria, who said, “I’ve bought some containers and I have no problems finding all my needs. I look forward to coming back next year. ”

Prized Winners Highlights of the exhibition included the MIFF Furniture Excellence Award and the Best Presentation Award. 2009’s Gold Winners for the Best Presentation Award were Kian Contract (101 sq m & above category), Benithem (50 – 100 sq m category) and Design Principles (50 sq m & below category); while Bristol Technologies won the Gold medal for the Furniture Excellence Award. Over the years, these competitions have encouraged exhibitors to create

trendy furniture and creative booth presentations to attract the buyers. Besides that, the MIECO Designer’s Choice Award has been well received by budding furniture designers. This award has been helpful in discovering talent, and has provided employment opportunities for past winners. 2009’s prizewinners were Jerry Kok Tsiang Hui for the professional and manufacturer home category, and Phum Boon Eng from KBU international college won the student category. These activities and more will be at MIFF 2010. The 16th MIFF will be held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) and the MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC). It will be occupying up to 85,000 sq m of exhibition space and will once again offer products from more than 450 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 6720

abundant, appealing

alder. Cabinet makers, furniture designers and woodworkers have come graded for Yield.®

to appreciate the many desirable properties of alder. It’s a beautiful wood that regenerates naturally and grows quickly. Alder has light,

consistent color and fine grain that accepts all manner of stains. It’s also strong and has uniform density so it machines well, has excellent turning properties, requires less hand work, and securely holds fasteners. Our alder is certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI), a standard that is also endorsed and recognized by the PEFC.
