s Asia’s international processing and packaging industry event, ProPak Asia embraces many of the leading manufacturing sectors to include not only food and beverage but also pharmaceutical, cosmetics, healthcare and the various export focused industrial fields that are experiencing tremendous growth here in Asia. Knowledge Strengthening Message From Mrs Darunee Edwards President The Food Science And Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT)
I
t is my great pleasure to organise the ‘Food Innovation Asia Conference 2010’, which is part of ProPak Asia 2010. The theme of the conference is ‘Indigenous Food Research and Development to Global Market’, and it will have 55 oral presentations. The conference is supported by several co-organisers, which includes the AgroIndustry Academic Council Association, Ubonratchathani University, the Department of Fisheries, the National Science and Technology Development Agency, the Federation of the Institute of Food Science and Technology in ASEAN, as well as support from Bangkok Exhibition Services. On June 19, FoSTAT will put together the ‘FoSTAT – Nestlé Quiz Bowl 2010’. The forum is for food science and technology undergraduate teams from difference universities in Thailand, to compete in food science and technology knowledge. There are 61 teams from 61 different universities in this competition, which aims to promote relationships between academic agencies and private sector partners through the involvement of future graduates in the food industry. Another activity is the ‘Food Innovation Contest’, with 22 teams of undergraduate students from different universities competing in technological capability to create innovative food products. In these times of economic crisis, most consumers are taking appropriate measures to cut their expenditure on luxury items, but they cannot stop purchasing food. As such, we need to take this opportunity to strengthen our knowledge in food science and technology to help stimulate the country’s economy through innovation. At the same time, it is essential that we build up worldwide consumer confidence in both the quality and the safety of our food products. May I take this opportunity to thank Bangkok Exhibition Services, which has always supported our ‘Food Innovation Asia Conference’ and the FoSTAT – Nestlé Quiz Bowl. n
Standards To Drive Globalisation Message From Ms Pitchaya Vijarodaya CEO of GS1 Thailand
B
eing aware that international trade is becoming increasingly competitive, Thai entrepreneurs find it necessary to upgrade their management system to attain efficiencies levelled with the rest of the world. We aim to maintain competitiveness of Thai industries and to sustain our share in the world market. The effectiveness of a management system relies very much on the tools employed. GS1 Thailand of the Federation of Thai Industries has assumed a major role in putting the GS1 global standard barcode into effect in supply chain management. Its implementation has resulted in higher efficiencies in many areas. Complexity is reduced and time is saved in inventory control, as well as point-of-sale trading. It has contributed to the country’s potential to compete in the world markets as Thai products are now of higher standard than before. It has also made product traceability possible. GS1 Thailand is the registrar of Electronic Product Code or EPC, which combines with Radio Frequency Identification or RFID technology to provide a tool for storing product data on a microchip within the EPC tag. Its implementation is aimed to enhance product management efficiencies even further. We pride ourselves on being able to contribute to stronger existence of Thai industries in the global arena. On this occasion, I appreciate the executives and exhibitors who realise the importance of GS1 System standard, one of the instruments that will drive Thai industries to internationalisation. I wish the organiser, Bangkok Exhibition Services, as well as other concerned organisations a successful and productive ProPak Asia 2010. n

his is the fourth year that the Science and Technology Trade Association is participating as the co-organiser for ProPak Asia. The response from the last two editions was a success. In 2010, the looming world economic recession and rising cost of living will be a challenge for all business entrepreneurs. For this year’s exhibition, it will be good opportunity for the exhibitors to showcase new technology and products to their customers, which may help

euve Clicquot Ponsardin (VCP), a French champagne house, has equipped its plant with Cermex’s end-of-line packaging system for its latest champagne box design. The company required a line that would give the lowest production cost possible, respect for the integrity of the bottles and presentation boxes, and flexibility for change of formats. The formats include handling the bottle on its own into tray or bottle in the VCP design box. Both options are then case packed into wrap-around blanks.
Key Factors Line 5 was built upon three key assets that would make the packaging system an optimised solution and one that has high-performance power. First of all, the integration of robots enables a combination of speed, protection and precision for each process. Format changeovers were also automated from motorisation of setting points. This includes assistance in tooling management and changeover. The third factor driving this project is the ability to protect the product and the quality of the packaging.
Five Point Upstream The fully automated line features a combination of flexibility for current

In order to go on international level, quality control and assurance, as well as research and development, play important roles in every production process more than ever, with higher international standards. Innovations and technologies is a sure-fire way to increase productivity and efficiency. The machines on the line each have features that contribute to an average format changeover time of less than 20 minutes.

The bottle and box turning device allows the bottles to be turned via a specific vision system. A camera placed above the bottle, reads the position of the label and rotates the stand until the bottle is correctly positioned.
The production capacity was to be increased to 8,500 bottles per hour. To enable this, two robotic systems were combined. The gantry packer has the capability to operate at high speeds with a payload of 250 kg. The two robots were integrated into the case packer, and can handle 16 formats at up to 25 cases per minute.

Disposable Kegs:
An Alternative Beer Container

R
ight before the start of the economic crisis, the European brewing industry had its advantages in the globalisation of markets. However, steadily declining sales in the domestic markets has started off export activities for the industry. The brewers soon realised that investment for new barrels is needed, as exports for keg beer were rising. On one hand, there are long rotations of the barrels because of the distance. On the other hand, the organisation of collecting and returning the barrel plays an important role. Consequently, breweries started a call for a disposable barrel-system. This call has been renewed by the imbalance of the global capital markets. Currently, there are several alternatives for disposable barrels.
Test Requirements The first requirement of the disposable barrels is to ensure that the product quality is unchanged as compared to the quality in the usual stainless steel barrel. The disposal and possible reuse of the container materials has to be locally regulated. This refers to a clarification of the legal situation within the importing country, in terms of material use and disposal provisions. The compatibility of the system with existing installations determines the conversion and installation costs.
Disposable Barrel Description The disposable barrels discussed in this analysis, are constructed based on the ‘Bag in Box’ principle. The beer is filled into a special foil bag. After reaching the filling-volume, the foil bag surface is close to the protective PET-bowl. The gas is then applied into the PET-bowl. Maximum allowed gas pressure is 3.5 atm. The disposal of the emptied kegs is usually done on the spot. The container is quickly dismantled to the basic components of foil, carton and PET ball. With the included venting tool, and a short swivel on the fitting, the valve opens to deflate the PET-ball into a flat disc.
The Results After a 14-day stress test with approximately 100 kg for each barrel, and a temperature of 42 deg C for eight hours, and 28 deg C for 16 hours, no damage was found on the barrels. This corresponds to the temperature in the containers. A 6-month test was conducted later, with the temperature maintained at 28 deg C. There was still no difference between the two kegs, and no difference in beer colour was seen. The microbiological samples taken were also clear of any findings. During cleaning of the dispensing machine, the disposable barrel has to stay on the line at a minimum pressure of 2.5 atm, so that the valve in the fitting can be completely closed. n

for a continuous vertical integration between the company management and the production department. Orders for a certain period are transferred to the system from the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning System). The orders contain data such as the lot number or the minimum expiration data of the product. Before the start of a production order, data are passed on to machines, quality sensors, marking devices and other devices, as well as working instructions to employees. After completion of an order, feedback to the ERP is carried out with processed information like the actual produced

odern production plants are no longer defined by the manufacturing of products, but instead, by customer orientation and the resulting service features such as adhering to deadlines, flexibility, delivery time and product variety. Above all, product diversity and the shorter product life cycles result in complex processes. This is nothing less than lean manufacturing. Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) can help by contributing to increased transparency, responsiveness and economy.

quantity, waste quantity and material consumption. An MES ideally provides the production management department with the functions it requires. These can be divided into three groups:
s pharmaceutical products move from manufacturer to consumer, the former require specialised transportation methods to ensure quality, as many drugs are temperature, humidity and light sensitive. Deviations in handling during transportation could result in degradation in the quality or potency of the drug, posing a health hazard for users. While Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) pertains to the production and control of drugs, Good Storage Practice (GSP) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP) deal with the appropriate storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals. GSP applies in all circumstances where pharma products are stored throughout the distribution process. Procedures are needed to keep unauthorised persons away from the storage areas. Storage areas also need to have ample space to allow the systematic storage of the various categories products. These are the: bulk and finished products; products in quarantine; and released, rejected, returned or recalled products. It is important for storage areas to be designed or modified to ensure that the required storage conditions are achieved. The areas should be clean and dry and maintained within acceptable temperature ranges. Where special storage conditions are required on the label – such as temperature and relative humidity – these should be provided, checked, monitored and recorded. Strength In Unity The unification of all functions in a software system and the connection of all elements involved in production to the MES enable horizontal integration. An escalation management system is assigned to the function groups, which indicates faults via operating terminals, by phone or with instant messaging. A line control panel with integrated quality monitoring was developed, with several MES functions within the control panel. The functionality necessary for vertical integration is included. If integration with an ERP is not desired, data can be entered manually. The overall equipment effectiveness is used for the output analysis of lines, sub-lines and machines. This characteristic number is determined by three subordinate characteristic numbers, which are the availability, the output and the quality. One of the control panel’s features is integrated quality monitoring for entering, as well as archiving and evaluating quality and process data. The data is shown in trend graphs, bar graphs and pie graphs. From industries in which MES’s are already used in all areas, it is known that the effectiveness of the processes can be increased by seven to 10 percent. n
quality manufacturing & supply chain, Norgine, who spoke at the third annual Bio/Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Management Asia conference, there are things outside the manufacturing site where the manufacturer does not have full control over. He cautioned that if no monitoring is carried out on a shipment after it leaves the manufacturing site, it can be difficult to determine what the shipment gets exposed to – for example, a shipment that is left on the tarmac under the rain or high humidity for 2-3 hours before it is shipped. However, regulations are now clearer and more pragmatic. A drug may run the risk of being removed from the market due to temperature deviations in logistics, if the supply chain is not handling the drug properly. According to Richard Smalley, associate director, Strategic Products and Vendors QA, UCB Pharma, it is necessary to think through the cost implications, product, packaging choice, supply route, the experience of and the controls that third-party logistics providers have in place, when setting up a cold chain. Smalley also believes that it is necessary to identify the areas of risk and to put additional controls in place. This is because the variability of the transportation and the manual handling that takes place during the loading and unloading of the product, are vulnerable areas where things could go awry in a supply chain. n

Cama has developed a ‘compact’ line for packing tetra bricks of fruit juice. The system has a speed of 30,000 bricks per hour, and features an electronic sleeving machine packs the bricks into wrap-around sleeves. The products are then loaded into trays by the monoblock loading unit. This includes a forming machine and a two-axis carbon fibre robot.
Ishida’s X-ray inspection system, IX-GA-DK series with IP-69K waterproof construction can be used for meat, poultry, seafood and other food processors requiring wash down construction. In the production lines for meat, poultry, or seafood, cleanup is required in order to keep up the factories’ hygiene standards. In the case of the x-ray inspection system, washing with high-pressure water is necessary because adhesive products are accumulated on conveyors or other parts of machine during operation. The construction of the IX-GA-DK model allows manufacturers to keep water from entering inside the x-ray machine and can withstand high-pressure water, while it keeps inspection sensitivity as high as the IX-GA models.

KHS’ Corpoplast InnoPET Blomax Series IV stretch blow moulders is capable of processing a range of plastic bottle sizes and shapes, with PET bottles holding anything from 120 ml to 3 ltr. The monoblock setup is able to process up to 72,000 PET bottles per hour, with typical efficiency levels exceeding 96 percent. The first point of optimisation within the monoblock system is directly downstream of the stretch blow moulding process. Removing bottles from the blow station and adjusting the distance of finished PET bottles to one another according to the configuration of the filling system is now handled by just one modular transfer wheel. An in all instances identically designed airlock is used as the second monoblock module.

Ziemann’s mash filter generation TCM is positioned in the market where high-gravity brewing dominates and raw grains are processed. Plants can run up to 16 brews per day with charges of 25 tonnes and brew sizes of up to 1,200 hl. The filter cloths last for 2,500 brews. As the system technology only requires short set-up times, the operating costs can be kept low. According to the company, compared with conventional membrane filters, the procurement expenses for the equipment are approximately 30 percent less.
The TranSlicer 2510 Cutter from Urschel replaces the 2500 Cutter in the company’s line-up with features to ease maintenance, increase positive product flow, and decrease operational costs. The machine accepts the same types of products: input of compressible food products up to 203 mm in diameter, or firm, round products such as cabbage up to 171 mm in diameter. Several new features are on the exterior of the machine. An additional stop button is located opposite the electrical enclosure. There are more sloped surfaces on the machine including the redesigned electrical enclosure and bottom feed pan along with stainless steel guardlocks.

asia helps Bottled water ride The Global Storm With the help of Asia, the bottled water category seems to have ridden out the worst of the global recession. By Richard Corbett, strategic analyst, Canadean
I
n terms of price, it is very difficult for bottled water to compete with tap or municipal water, and consequently many commentators felt that waters would be particularly exposed to the global recession. The research company’s Global Bottled Water Report, however, suggests that final year figures for 2009 may see the worldwide market for bottled water increase by around two percent. Although this does represent a slowdown, it is encouraging for the industry that the category can maintain growth in even the most testing of trading environments.
asia boosts PerFormance Asia will once again be the main global
driver in 2009, and it will be China that boosts the regional and global performance. The Chinese water category jumped by 18 percent in the third quarter last year, and is set for another big increase in volumes. The market has been aided by hot weather in certain important parts of the country, and intense price competition, which has kept prices low. An improving economy is very significant, and it is perhaps no surprise that the Chinese quarterly GDP growth rate was 8.9 percent year on year, which was one percent higher than Q2 for 2009. There remains plenty of slack in the Asian market with per capita two and half times less than the global average. With the help of Asia, the bottled water category seems to have ridden out
the worst of the global recession, but pre-recession growth rates are not expected to return.
north american decline The market would have fared significantly better if one discounts North America, which in 2008, dropped from double digit growth the year before into decline. In the US, some government offices are banning packaged water from government offices and events, while various other states are attempting to add bottled water taxes. North America accounts for 18 per-
cent of global sales and the performance here is harming the overall global picture; in 2009, without North America, the global water market was forecast to increase by a healthier four percent.
eUroPe slUmP The biggest market for waters, West Europe, is expected to settle back down to a growth rate of five percent after 2009, a marked slowdown on the seven percent seen in 2007 or the 9.5 percent jump in 2006. What will be encouraging for the water industry is that every region in the world is anticipated to be registering water growth in 2010. n
