ith a theme of “Innovative Food Science and Technology for Mankind: Empowering Research for Health And Ageing Society”, the Food Innovation Asia Conference commenced yesterday. Gracing the opening ceremony was Privy Councilor General Surayud Chulanont; Dr Pavinee Chinachoti, president of Food Science and Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT); Dr Tanaboon Sajjaanantakul, president of Agro-Industry Academic Council Association; Dr Suchatvee Suwansawat, president of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang; Dr Sakarindr Bhumiratana, president of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi; Dr Chanasak Baitiang, advisor to the rector of Academic Affairs and representative for the president of King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok; and Justin Pau, general manager of UBM BES. The Thai population is ageing rapidly, and the declining numbers of the working class will affect economic growth. Research and development are the key success factors to prevent such a demise, and food innovation and research in this area will therefore be critical, said Privy Councilor General Surayud Chulanont. The Food Innovation Asia Conference has become an important platform to bring together academic and industry professionals from all sectors related to food, and has created an effective learning environment for all learners, including the many young scientists who participate every year in the conference and contest that is held alongside, he said. “In the current and coming decades, building partnerships
between academia and the industry will bridge the innovation gap of the opportunities and challenges. The knowledge of Food Science and Technology will position Thailand as a provider of food and food services to the growing elderly population across the region,” he said. The conference is being held over two days, and split into four different divisions for the first day. These included the themes of: food chemistry, nutrition and analysis; food processing and engineering; food product development, sensory, and consumer research, that was held in conjunction with the Sensory and Consumer Research Joint Symposium; and food microbiology, food biotechnology and fermentation. Speakers for yesterday’s sessions came from all over the region including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and Thailand, and even from further abroad such as France and the US. They addressed possible new foods that could be used for senior nutrition such as tempeh, or monascus fermented rice products, and discussed their research findings on the antioxidant effects of Yacon tea leaves, the effect of high pressure homogenisation on properties of nanofibrillated cellulose from cabbage outer leaves, or even the efficacy of acidified nitrite on the contamination reduction of Salmonella. The conference will resume tomorrow and attendees can expect to learn about how beverage colours and flavours interact with sweetness and aftertastes and consumer liking, the future of food security in developing countries, and the difference in sorting aroma of cooked rice by regular and visually-impaired people.

2 Industry 4.0 A Hype? T
he Show Daily team sat down with Festo South East Asia’s Ee Sian Lee (ESL), managing director, Festo Southeast Asia and Pacific, and Patinya Sirikulchayanont (PS), industry segment manager, Food & Packaging, to learn of their views for the hottest topic in the industry: Industry 4.0.
High Performance Food-Safe Lubricants Industry 4.0 is becoming more prevalent in all industries, are you seeing that your customers are also looking for solutions like this?
Keeps Your Production Lifeline Strong
ESL: Definitely. Industry 4.0, smart factories, cyber-physical systems and big data are driving the future of manufacturing. In fact, just recently we’ve run quite a few seminars in four countries in Southeast Asia, and we’ve seen an overwhelming response from industry professionals in terms of attendance for these. Industry 4.0 has become sort of a buzz word that everyone is talking about, but I don’t think everyone really knows what it is. I think Festo is in a very good position to address this because Industry 4.0 came from Germany, and we are a German company and a member of the “Industry 4.0” initiative of the German federal government. IOptimal believe we have the advantage of being more in line with the direction of the Performance German government, and as a company, we have a commitment to drive this. I think we’ve also invested a lot of money to implement this knowledge into our own factories.
Which aspects do you see your customers typically wanting to improve on with Industry 4.0 solutions? ESL: We can see that our customers are looking for data collection and analysis solutions to better manage production schedules, resources, labour and maintenance. They are also looking for higher efficiency and productivity, with less hardware investment to achieve higher performance. PS: Customers in food and packaging businesses are also looking for products and technologies that can communicate to them in the real-time condition of Low Maintenance their machines. This way, they would know beforehand if a machine is facing any Costor has any parts that are going to wear out in the next one or maintenance issues two months, thus enabling them to set a preventive measure in place. Additionally, machines should be able to inter-communicate, such that when one machine is down, the others know exactly how to react.
How important is it to adopt the Industry 4.0 concept? Where do you foresee opportunities will lie?
Enhanced ESL: Industry 4.0 is not just a fancy word. It brings increased competitiveness, Productivity productivity, revenue and profitability, optimised manufacturing processes, and a lot more. No manufacturers can afford to be left behind. I think this is definitely something that is happening now, and it will be more important that this moves faster. Because this is about efficiency and customisation too. I think Industry 4.0 will be able to support customisation manufacturing much better. I strongly believe that (even for Festo products) standard products will not make optimised solutions for customers, unfortunately. From a manufacturer’s perspective, they would like to have standardised solutions, but frankly every company has their own needs. I foresee that customised product solutions will be growing more eventually. In many ways, it really is about cost. I think even now, you see a lot of production in Asia, where a lot of companies have moved their production factories over the years to countries with lower labour costs. I think this is a challenge for many industries. Reduced To take advantage of this, I see a lot of potential in terms of business opportunities Downtime for companies such as Festo and its competitors, because automation is really the first step before you even talk about Industry 4.0.
Lubrication is the life blood of machineries and manufacturing equipment. Ensure efficient and safe food, Extending Shelf-Lives A Must beverage or pharmaceutical production with NSF certified typically served in either single pack or multiple-pack Consumers today are looking for products with longer H1 lubricants. containers, and the film also provides good notch shelf-lives to cope with their ever increasingly hectic lifestyles. Consequently, manufacturers of the food and beverage industry are on the search for products that they can use to ensure end-products stay fresh for longer periods of time. One way could be through Nomura Trading Company Limited’s film barrier solutions, says Tadanobu Ueno, manager of the industry business unit, materials division for the company. The company focuses on food packaging, and here at ProPak Asia, they are featuring their innovative barrier solutions for various applications such as confectionery and dairy. Their oxygen barrier sheet is a film that can easily be Product Brands used for moulding and has excellent rigidity and a high oxygen barrier capability. This film suits food products that easily oxidise such as with yoghurt or cheese; the oxygen barrier prevents oxidation and can therefore retain the original food flavour. These products are
breaking capability, suiting form-fill-seal production. The company is also showcasing the Toyal Ultra Lotus, an oil- and water-repellent film that suits creamy end-products such as cakes, chocolate, or sticky food applications in general. The film works by having an uneven surface so that the contact surface area between the film and the food is reduced. This hence prevents the adhesion of these foods to the film, such that during use, the product can still retain its original shape and appearance, unlike a thwarted cream cake, for example. Today, there is an increasing number of convenience stores in Thailand, and with this, more of such sticky products as well as ready-to-eat products that consumers are demanding more of. "The trend is thus changing (versus traditional meals at home), so I think our product supports this trend," concluded Mr Ueno.

4 Virtual Reality—The Future Of Packaging Business France has partnered with Geppia, a French association which works to facilitate international business proceedings for French companies, and they are showcasing the virtual packaging line (VPL) at the French pavilion which allows visitors to immerse themselves in a virtual experience that shows the entire processing cycle of a bottled beverage—from the front line all the way to the end line of production. Visitors can head to the pavilion to better understand the production cycle of a product through the 360 degree experience with the VPL. Virtual technology is seen as the future in manufacturing as companies can train their staff to repair machinery or learn new technologies conveniently. Business France is a French national agency which aims to increase exports from the country, and helps international French companies promote their products globally. The agency has seen an increase in the number of exhibiting companies this year at ProPak Asia as compared to the previous year—this year there are 16 companies in the French pavilion, and there are 10 other
French companies exhibiting at the show which are not part of the pavilion. In France and other parts of Europe, there is an increasing consumer demand in personalised packaging where consumers can have their names printed on the packaging (such as on CocaCola pet bottles) as well as interactive packaging which allows users to scan the packaging—through scanning QR codes and Mypack Connect which will then connect users to the company’s websites or to recipes which users can make with the product, says Adrien Calatayud, project manager, agrotech department, Business France. This allows customers to interact with the product and also enables them to easily access more information about the product online. The demand for this type of packaging has not gained popularity in the Southeast Asian region yet but the French agency expects this to gain momentum over the next five to 10 years in the region. They also predict that more companies will move towards green packaging which are reusable, recyclable and/or biodegradable.
Going Green This is the second year that the APPMA has had a pavilion at ProPak Asia, with seven companies participating this year, including one company from New Zealand—BBC Technologies—which is participating for the first time at the show. A few of the Australian companies observed a high number of visitors on both the first and second days of the show this year. Inox, an Australian food processing equipment and system manufacturer, enjoyed good visitor traffic to their booth where they are showcasing a food mixer which can be used for products that are harder to mix—such as xanthan gums. The pavilion’s success in the first two days of the show is attributed to its strategic position at the show this year, especially as it is located in the packaging zone which receives more visitors. Nerida Kelton, business development manager of the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery
Ready For The Future The Singapore pavilion is one of the largest in this year’s ProPak Asia, comprising of a total of 29 companies under its umbrella. Its motto “Future Ready Singapore”highlights the nation’s commitment to help companies stay abreast with technological trends as well as continuously improving their manufacturing processes, especially with the manufacturing industry moving towards Industry 4.0. The Association of Small & Medium Enterprises (ASME) based in Singapore helps SMEs in Singapore grow their businesses both regionally and internationally. This is achieved through providing the companies opportunities in participating in trade shows across the globe, which would allow them them to build relationships, says Shen Huizhen international relations manager at ASME. The association also engages consultants for SMEs to provide them advice on improving their businesses in order to remain competitive in the market.
Miss Shen says she sees Southeast Asia as a market abundant with opportunities for Singaporean companies due to its strategic location, which is central in the region, making it cost-effective for companies from Singapore and Thailand to work together. The similar cultures in the region also makes it easier for Singaporean companies to communicate with Thai companies. The rapidly growing populations in Southeast Asian countries is also contributing to market growth across the region. Feedback from participating companies have proven the show to be a success for them and this is evident after only the first two days at the show, especially with a better floor layout for the pavilion. Majority of the Singaporean companies are highly keen on returning to ProPak Asia next year and are already looking into booking their booths.
Association, says growth in the Southeast Asian region is increasing faster than in Australia, which makes it important for Australian manufacturers to attend trade shows like ProPak so that they can showcase new machine developments to companies in the Southeast Asian region. The country also has a good geographic location to provide machinery to the region as it is situated closer, unlike Europe and the US. The middle class is growing across Southeast Asia and they are demanding flexible packaging and Miss Kelton sees that as factor in pushing this segment for further growth. Companies are also moving towards green packaging as it is sustainable—eco-friendly packaging involves increased use of life cycle inventory and life cycle assessment to help guide the use of packaging which reduces its ecological footprint.
5 Inspecting On A Multi-Spectrum CEIA, a manufacturer of metal detectors, has developed multi-spectrum technology with the ability to scan across multiple frequencies simultaneously, and accurately differentiate between product effect and metal contaminants with no need to reduce sensitivity. Conventional metal detectors—even three-frequency models—can only use one frequency at a time. The THS/MS21 series of metal detectors achieves the highest sensitivity by applying a broad spectrum of frequencies simultaneously and continuously, allowing it to detect smaller particles of all metals. It is highly adaptable to any product for inspection, including fresh, frozen, hot, cold, wet or dry products that have single or multiple ingredients.

Providing 110 percent mixing solutions—this is one of the core competencies of ystral gmbh, German manufacturer of machines and processing systems. The company provides solutions for specific applications of the chemical, food, cosmetic and the pharmaceutical industries. The company develops and manufactures customised process systems based on the ystral Conti-TDS machine that leads to significant and proven savings in process time, floor space, labour and energy consumption. This can be achieved through the well-engineered and executed technology for powder dispersion that the machine has. This allows for a hydrocolloid to take only seconds to disperse and dissolve rather than hours; manufacturing costs for spray dry emulsions to be reduced to a fraction by smart processing; and the ageing of ice cream reduced so as to match the actual production process. All this is enabled through the combination of five processing steps in one machine while maintaining constant production parameters: emptying of big bags, sacks and containers, powder transport, powder incorporation, and finally wetting and dispersing under vacuum. Independent from the viscosity, type of vessel and batch size, stable suspensions, emulsions and solutions can therefore be produced in a fraction of the time required by conventional mixing and dispersing systems.

12 Catering To Changes, Chocolates And More I n many parts of the world, there is a growing affluence as consumers (mainly the growing middle classes) have higher incomes and can spend more on what were previously ‘luxurious’ goods. This is driving a growth in the chocolate industry. “At one time, it used to be all toffee and hard candy— which is boiled sugar type products, but now this represents the top end of the confectionery industry. Chocolates is a sector that is growing very rapidly. It commands a much higher price than conventional confectionery, and likewise the machinery is much bigger, much more complicated, so we’re hoping this will make a change in our business,” said John Gordon, director, A.M.P Rose. The company is a long-established machine manufacturer in the confectionery sector and manufactures process machines, wrapping machines, and in recent years chocolate manufacturing machines. These are the company’s three areas of business, Mr Gordon said. They cater to the big names such as PepsiCola, Mondelez, Mars, and Nestle, also because their equipment commands a premium price, he added. Such machines that they have include those for chocolate moulding, which they manufacture in their factory in Bangalore and cater to the Southeast Asian markets. These are large machines, Mr Gordon informed, about 30 to 40 m long and are fully automatic. Other than this, one example of a line they have here at ProPak Asia is the X-Pax Multipack Solutions line, a
new automation that has been designed for multipack solutions for a wide range of products. The systems combine a flowrapping machine with the latest linear transport system. The line comprises three different types. The XTS system is an extended transport system which brings together the benefits of rotary and linear systems, and enables individual product transport with a continuous flow of material. Due to the low construction volume, the energy efficiency and size of the machine can be significantly reduced compared with conventional systems. It can move at up to speeds of 4m/s without any jerking and still with maximum positioning accuracy. This jerk-free acceleration profile therefore allows even the transport of open liquids. The second type is the Flowrap X-Pax, a horizontal wrapping machine that is medium-speed full-servo driven and suitable for single packing applications or multipacking applications involving heat or cold seal wrapping materials. It is suitable for a wide range of products from food to hardware. The versatility of the machine suits users who require regular change of product or pack sizes, as it allows for changes not only in individual product sizes, number of pieces per pack, number of product layers, or even pack length—all at the touch of a button. The last type is the Multi-function X-Pax, a machine that can flowpack bars into multipacks and then load
them directly to shelf-ready display cases. Industry 4.0 is one of the key factors to helping to reach peak efficiency within the factory, and the system is able to send a stream of data and analysis in real-time, as well as show trends over periods of time. This would therefore allow users to monitor performance and make any changes if necessary. On his thoughts for the trends of the industry, Mr Gordon said that he sees packaging to become more eco-friendly. Consumers are more aware of the need to ‘save the environment’, and are driving manufacturers to look for environmentally-friendly solutions such as biodegradable packaging materials. He also foresees that the industry will move toward smaller packaging so as to not only reduce waste from the consumer’s end, but also to save retail space on shelves.

Heat control in the oven, to the most precise temperature, is critical to avoid food products from getting burnt or overcooking. Manufacturers are careful because finished products that are outside of standards will become wastage. Likewise for lubrication, the maintenance personnel aim to reduce lubricant wastage. Lubricants are akin to a machine’s bloodline. Bearings, for example, working as part of an oven are usually under duress because of high operating temperatures. Typically, this can go up to as high as 210 deg C for 10-12 hours a day. It is thus essential to select a lubricating grease with the ability to protect and extend the lifespan of bearings under such conditions. Tacbecon TSF 6170 has had successes in confectionary wafer, biscuit and bread ovens in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Its synthetic formula and superior additive package provides bearing defense until 250 deg C and oxidation stability, which are ideal for rust and corrosion prevention. In addition, the NSF-certified food-grade grease emits no smoke and has no flash point. This means the risks of oven fires are very low. All in all, the lubricant allows smooth operations in the bearings—saving energy, unexpected downtime costs and maximising productivity.

13 Hygiene On Top Of All Things M
anufacturers are looking for more hygienic solutions, according to Jan Bogegaard Larsen, corporate product director, Trepko. The Danish company’s main focus is in the dairy industry, with their filling and closing solutions for PET bottles, cups, and pre-formed containers. Do not be fooled by their little stand here at ProPak Asia; at Interpack earlier in May this year, the company had a 500 sq m stand with 25 machines! Their presence here at the show is to test the waters in Asia, Mr Larsen said. On why, he says he sees a great potential for the company here in Asia in terms of business opportunities. “We have been doing business in Europe, US and the Middle East for 70 years now, and I see that we definitely need to expand in this region. This is just a first step we’re taking to be here in Thailand.” Trepko has a line aseptic cup filling machines which have a high degree of flexibility and can therefore cater to even the most complex needs of a customer. This includes accommodating to changes between different cup shapes and formats, which can be done in a matter of minutes. The machines also meet the most stringent hygiene standards required within the food industry, and can be designed with three different grades of hygiene: standard, Ultra Clean, and Aseptic. “We are seeing high interest for simply just better
hygiene levels on all points of the machines used in filling. Customers are also moving towards reducing the amount of additives used to preserve their products, so they will actually need more hygienic filling solutions. This is what we provide,” Mr Larsen informed. He hopes PETcompanies Line , PROPAK AISA Daily to meet of the dairy sectorShow who might find2017, 152 x 251 mm, CC-en31-AZ127 05/17 interest in their solutions here at ProPak Asia.
Creating Handles In An Improved Way
Side Stretch Blowing Moulding Machinery’s T-Handle is a new solution for producing containers with an integrated handle using a preform. It is especially suitable for producing 1-litre to 5-litre bottles, and improves the image of products whilst making it easier to use through its ergonomic design for the juice, water, oils, sauces, homecare, and personal care industries. The handle is created during the blowing process and does not require any additional alterations to be made to the container. It is an ideal solution to replace the HDPE bottles in the PET packaging. This can lower costs by 25 percent in real cases as it reduces the weight of the containers with PET material, and also simplifies (and speeds up) the manufacturing process, and minimises electricity and maintenance costs. Other advantages of the system include the elimination of the need for additional handles, ease of use for all users, better display of the content inside containers, lower environmental impact, and allows for the production of transparent and opaque containers in a variety of colours.

14 Better Processes For Improved Productivity
Good Business Relationships Are Key
Visitor traffic for AFA Systems on the first day of ProPak Asia was very positive, says Eric Langen, sales and marketing manager for the Canadian company. The company received a healthy mix of Asian distributors as well as end users that stopped by their booth. Mr Langen is excited to see how visitor traffic will turn out over the entire span of the show as he is expecting increased traffic on the third and fourth days of the show. The company first participated in ProPak Asia last year and they have a better booth location this year as compared to the year before. Choosing a booth location that was more centralised was key in attracting more visitors to their booth. The company’s primary focus is on manufacturing end-of-line machinery for the industry, and their main product line includes machinery for cartoning, packing, carton forming and tray forming. Mr Langen has been sharing the latest technology in case packing and cartoning to visitors, as well as information on machinery that are able to perform complete servo changeovers—which means the production line can be easily changed with the touch of a single button. More companies are also focusing on faster changeovers which means that when the production of different products are changed, they want limited operator intervention as this allows their processes to be more automated as it helps in product line efficiencies. In Southeast Asia, the machinery market is still growing and it is expected that more companies will be moving towards automating their processes as labour rates in the region are increasing. This can already be seen in countries like Thailand, China and Indonesia. The packaging industry is also starting to develop in Vietnam, and more companies have started to invest in this segment, and this is a market that AFA Systems is interested in the future as well.
The Bavarian Pavilion has participated in ProPak Asia for the past few years, providing support to Bavarian companies in the Southeast Asian region in the food industry. The show this year has grown as compared to the past year, with the Bavarian pavilion occupying a wider floor space—which is a highly positive indicator of its success, says Corinna Waritschlager, trade fairs and exhibition manager, Bayern International. Most of the participating Bavarian companies already have local partners in Thailand, and are keen on looking for new partners to expand their businesses with and the exhibition is a great opportunity for this. There are numerous companies at the event which are not only from Thailand but from other countries across the region—such as Singapore, Indonesia and Japan—and this allows the Bavarian companies to build business relationships with them easily, and tap into the Southeast Asian markets, all in the convenience of one show. A few Bavarian companies have been returning to ProPak Asia yearly, indicating that the companies are performing well in the Southeast Asian region. Most of the companies exhibiting at the pavilion are excited to return to the show next year as well, as they already have good relationships with local Thai companies and are working to improve those relationships, and to create new ones. Having good business relationships with local companies are important for the Bavarian manufacturers as it allows them to have a better understanding of their customers’ needs, and therefore providing solutions for them. As a whole, the Southeast Asian region provides a huge market potential for Bavarian products and machinery.

The Stein TwinDrum 600 Spiral Oven has been designed to provide a compact, versatile and cost-efficient two-zone cooking system for a wide range of cooking applications. The oven combines proven technology from across the JBT range, including Double D's unique airflow technology, Stein's cooking experience and Frigoscandia's renowned engineering excellence. The oven is flexible enough to cook all forms of breaded products. It can also steam-cook and provide a pre-frying or pre-cooking stage. Heat and humidity for the oven are controlled separately in their respective zones, and the oven's high temperature capability and airflow technology with superior heat transfer rate and uniformity ensures excellent results in roasted boneless and bone-in chicken. The uniform airflow across all tiers also guarantees high product yield. Access and cleaning is made easy with a fan positioned at floor level, and further with the automatic cleaning by the recirculating cleaning system. The oven requires low running and maintenance costs, and can process higher volumes of up to four tonnes of product per hour.
