Wenas Wildlife Area 4x4 Snow Run Report by Clay Graham

On Thursday December 30th, 2010 we met up with three rigs at the Sheep Company Road entrance of the Wenas Wildlife Area for an All Wheelers Off Road Club snow run. The drivers on this day were Havo in his Toyota, BlindPilot in his TJ and myself "Ceg" in my CJ5. Havo was our trail boss on the run. We made it up to the towers and back down through some deep snow drifts and icy roads. A long the way we saw a few herds of elk and some of the guys saw a coyote. The skies were blue so we had a great view of the valleys and the mountains. Both Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams could be seen. Two of the three rigs had some mechanical failure but were able to drive back home on their own. I would say this was the best wheelin' I ever done at the Wenas Wildlife Area. The snow was great, my kids had fun and some good friends were there to share the adventure. Here are some pictures of our day.

Moving on through a fun section of trail. We lucked out that this section was not iced over or we could have been stuck at the bottom. No Trees to winch from.

Here we stop to see a few herds of elk

My view from the CJ5.

Here are a few of the elk

Here is where some saw the coyote. The kids and I never could see the coyote since it was the color of it's surroundings.

Page 4

Eastern Washington Adventures Somewhere along this section of trail my tranny started a loud noise as I was in third gear low range. I pushed in the clutch and the noise was gone. I started back off in first gear and found it was loud too. I hit second and all was good. I tried to go into third and could not get it into gear. It would just grind. And we are off again.

The snow was getting deeper Walking back to the CJ

We took a short break before dropping down this next section. You can see the towers where we were headed.

I stopped here to wait since the other two rigs were having a hard time breaking trail.

Mt. Rainier.

Havo finally made it and then I had the hard time because of Havo's tracks. I found that reverse was making a bad noise too. I was able to use reverse enough to rock the rig back and forth. With rocking it between second and reverse with some high RPMs I made it through. Havo letting more air out. I took this time to drop my rear tires down to 5 PSI from 9. They aired up 1 PSI since the parking area.

Moving on up so I don't get left I find Havo having a hard time.

Eastern Washington Adventures We moved on and I had a hard time getting through another section. The tires threw snow on the windshield. The snow melted fast and then froze as you can see in this picture.

Havo stuck again.

The snow drifts were deep up by the towers. BlindPilot giving Havo a pull.

The kids ran and played.

These guys were way ahead of me since I only had second gear.

Well that did not work so well.

I caught up to the other rigs since Havo had to stop because he lost an u-joint cap. Havo had to run 2 wheel drive on out.

BlindPilot pulled Havo out again and then we were on our way.

EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

On down Durr Road we drove on ice for miles.

Page 9

Eastern Washington Adventures We stopped for a break and to do a little target practice.

We aired up and headed out. Lucky my CJ5 is high geared and I only live a few miles away since I had to drive home in second gear. Later that night we met at Brats N' Brews in West Valley to talk about our day over food and a few brews. What a great day!! Note: See our on-line forum for the full report and pictures of the Wenas Wildlife Area 4x4 Snow Run

Getting up the next hill was not too bad if you had 4 wheel drive. Havo was running in 2 wheel but had to go into 4 and limp with a bad u-joint. This picture was right after he unlocked his hubs to prevent any more damage.

Here back where we started, the Sheep Company Road entrance of the Wenas Wildlife Area.

Unlike steel cables, synthetic lines do not store energy under stress and in the event of breakage; they do not exert the dangerous and violent whiplash action like that of a snapped steel cable. Ropes come with a thimble loop on one end with swivel hook.

New Years Colockum Snow Run

Here we are at Olmstead State Park getting ready to pull out.

Report by Clay Graham

On Saturday January 1st, 2011 we had a Yakima/Kittitas Forest Watch run up Colockum Road. The drivers on this run were Foxracer in his Rubicon, 4WheelingPlus.com in his XJ, Tiny in his XJ, Don in his XJ and Test Dummy in his XJ. Foxracer was the Trail Boss. I rode with Test Dummy. We started the run at noon from Olmstead State Park which was not too far away from Colockum Road. We Ran Colockum Road to about the 4900 foot elevation. The snow at that point was deep powder and would not pack. The four rigs that went into the last area got stuck. Don parked just before the deep powder area and came up to help with recovery. Once everyone got back to where Don was parked, we headed back down. Once at the bottom we aired up and were headed home just before 5 PM.

We drove north on Ferguson Road and then turned east onto Vantage Hwy.

We turned north on Number 81 road, then east on Brick Mill Road and then north on Colockum Road.

This was a great run with good people. The area looks to be in good shape for the most part. We did not see anyone doing any resource damage but saw some tracks that were close. We pick up some trash left by target shooters across from where we aired down. Here are the pictures of the day: EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

Page 12

Eastern Washington Adventures We stopped to air down after we past the last house along the road.

Don got stuck so everyone else tested their rigs where there were no tracks. Heading up Colockum road.

4WheelingPlus.com pulled Don to get him going again.

Moving on up Colockum Road.

Tiny had to air down more because he could not get his XJ to move out of the deep snow.

At this point the snow was deep powder and Don decided to wait to see how the other did before driving into it.

Foxracer suck his Rubicon.

Don pulled 4WheelingPlus.com to get him going.

Garmin says we are driving on Colockum Road but it should have said, "Stuck on Colockum Road".

Test Dummy followed but got stuck.

It is a stare down!

Up front 4WheelingPlus.com took the lead after pulling Foxracer out. 4WheelingPlus.com got stuck and then Foxracer did too. The first 3 rigs were all stuck.

Tiny pulled Test Dummy out and Test Dummy hit it hard to get across. Tiny got stuck trying to follow. 4WheelingPlus.com happy to be wheelin'.

Eastern Washington Adventures Here we are after turning around, stuck again.

Foxracer pulled Tiny out and then came around to help Test Dummy. Foxracer tried to pull Test Dummy out but got stuck. Time for the winch.

Tiny pulled Test Dummy out. Test Dummy took another run and made it farther than the last time. Once the strap was off, Foxracer pulled forward to a harder packed area so Test Dummy could winch out.

Tiny got stuck back where Test Dummy just was.

EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

That worked well.

Here we are airing up at the place we aired down earlier.

Eastern Washington Adventures Western Washington Brew Tour Report by Clay Graham

On Friday January14th, 2011 we left our home in Selah Washington around 10 AM and headed west in our Suburban. We took White Pass over. It was warm out and raining. The snow was melting causing a lot of water to come off the mountains. As we were driving in the Rimrock area, big rocks were rolling out in front of us onto the highway. It looked like something off a cool action movie but one I did not want to be in. Once on the west side we went to my Brother Ron’s house in Kent where we were spending the night. To start the brew tour Ron took us to the Trade Route Brewing Company in Pacific Washington. It is located in a warehouse complex toward the rear.

We found us a table off to the side so we could check things out. We ordered a pizza and the brew samplers. I believe the food was brought in from someone else but it was there in no time and very good. The beer was flavorful in a good way. The service was a little slow when the place filled up. They could have used a little more help for the crowd they had. Over all I liked the Trade Route Brewing Company and hope to go back some day. Day 2 of the Western Washington Brew Tour Report by Clay Graham

On the Saturday January 15th, 2011 we left my brother Ron's place in Kent and headed to Seattle for day two of our Western Washington Brew Tour. Our first stop was at Pyamid Alehouse across the street from Safeco Field. The Tap Room is the same room where the beer is made with a divider in between.

We order some samplers and some lunch. The food, beer and server were all great at Pyramid Alehouse! I would like to come back someday.

EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

Page 19

Eastern Washington Adventures Next we went a few blocks away across from Quest Field to Elysian Fields.

Across the road was Chateau Ste. Michelle. This place has beautiful grounds.

We shared a sampler since we had more places to see. Elysian beer was very different from others. We head over to Woodinville so the ladies could hit some wineries and we could check out Redhook. The first stop in Woodinville was at Columbia Winery. Finely back on track. Just down the road was Redhook Brewery.

The ladies did some wine tasting and I walked around checking things out. A big tap room called "Forecasters Pub".

EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

Page 20

Eastern Washington Adventures I hear the food is good but since the place was packed, we just had the brew samplers.

We headed back to Kent and stopped at the Shindig Martini Bar.

Next we took the highway to Bellevue. The first stop was at Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery.

The drinks were colorful.

We ordered the samplers a long with some appetizers. The place is huge. The food, beer and service were great! I plan to come back again someday. Close by is the Tap House. 160 beers on tap.

At the Tap House there are too many beers to choose from so we just ordered a beer sampler of their choice. Most of the beers were good. EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

The bar tender went out his way to make us drinks we might like since we never had martinis before. They were good. The next stop was the Sidetrack Eatery & Pub. It was an alright place to go. Page 21

Eastern Washington Adventures Day 3 of the Western Washington Brew Tour Report by Clay Graham

Inside the Tap room was small but nice. We ordered the samplers.

On Sunday January 16th, 2011 we left my brother Ron's place in Kent and headed toward Gig Harbor for day three of our Western Washington Brew Tour. In Gig Harbor I dropped my wife off at her sitters and my brother-in-law Trevor jumped in so we go check out 7 Seas Brewing. We pulled in to find the place was did not open until 3 PM. We decide to stop at Sunset Grill for a beer to kill some time. The Sunset Grill had a nice lounge, friendly people and great service.

From the Tap Room you can look down on where they make the beer.

After a beer we took our time and made our way a few blocks over to 7 Seas Brewing. We were just a little early and had to wait for them to open the gate.

We had a good time at 7 Seas Brewing. We got a growler of British Pale Ale to go and head to see other places. I will be back someday. We went down to the water to a place called Tides Tavern. It was very roomy inside and had a great view over the water. The service was great. Another good place to stop in. The next stop was down the road at Anthony's. There is a lounge with nice bar and a cool view. We went down the road for dinner at the HYIU-HEE-HEE. The food was real good but the service was a little slow.. That was the end of this Western Washington Brew Tour. Note: See our on-line forum for the full report and pictures of the Western Washington Brew Tour EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

Ahtanum Snow Run Story by Clay Graham

On Sunday January 9th, 2011 we had a All Wheelers Off Road Club run up Doe Pocket at the Ahtanum State Forest. The drivers on this run were Jeepscum in his TJ, Foxracer in his Rubicon, TJ40 in his TJ, Colemancooler in his Toyota, TheMiddleKidin his Flatty and BlindPilot in his TJ. Jeepscum was the Trail Boss. I rode with BlindPilot. We started the run around 10 AM from the Tampico Church. We ran the North Fork Ahtanum Road to the Nasty Creek Corrals and aired down. We ran the Doe Pocket Trail up the ridge. Some of the Insanityfab guys where running the same trail. We wheeled some with them. At the steep double climb TheMiddleKid has some trouble getting up the hill. Colemancooler and TheMiddleKid turned around for home. The four TJs kept going until the powder snow got real deep.

Snoqualmie Falls Report by Clay Graham

On January 17th, 2011 we were heading back from the west side of the state and decided to show the kids Snoqualmie Falls. It had warmed up in Washington State a few days before Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the snow was melting fast. There was flooding across Washington State and a lot of water coming off Snoqualmie Falls. Here are a few pictures of our time there:

Eastern Washington Adventures Forest Watch Colockum 4x4 Snow Run Report and photos by Clay Graham

On Saturday February 26, 2011 around 10 AM we met up at 4WheelingPlus.com in Kittitas Washington for a Forest Watch run up Colockum Road hosted by Yakima/Kittitas Forest Watch. We had Forest Watch Volunteers come from all over Washington State to do this 4x4 snow run. The weather was great and the snow was perfect for snow wheeling. The area on top of the ridge had a lot of use by snowmobiles. A few snowmobilers were friendly and happy to see we had a legal road to snow wheel on since most everything else for many miles was only open to snowmobiles. We made it up to the top of Colockum Pass and only lost the road once due to a blip on the GPS leading us. Lucky we found out we were off track not to far from Colockum Road. On the way back we stopped at the point where we were off track earlier to check two of the GPSs since the one who lead us there had left before us. This is when our great day turned ugly. We met a Snowmobile group mad at wheelers because Kittitas County said they had to stop illegally grooming Colockum Road and wheel vehicle had a right to use the road. These guys were flying around between us at high speeds and taking down our license plate numbers. They remind me of the outlaw biker clubs you see on TV. Three guys were yelling at us saying we were off Colockum Road when we were all in the area of the road on top of deep snow doing no resource damage. I trying to talked to the one that seemed to be the gang leader calmly. He just got in my face yelling he was turning us into the Sheriff because we had no right to be on DNR land. These guys are giving the Snowmobile users group a bad name by harassing other users. User groups need to fight to keep public lands open for ALL users, not fight with each other. If they would have showed us where to road went after the markers

EasternWashingtonAdventures.com

that would have helped us to be over the top of Colockum Road which we were trying to follow. So instead of educating us, they just made us mad and we still had no clue where the road really was since there was barbwire sticking up were the GPS said the road was. I reported what happened to the DNR I told them I take full responsibility since it was my run but do not see anything wrong with what we did. This was a very fun run. We plan to go back soon as we can and of course have two GPSs up front to show the way. Here are some pictures I took of the day: 4WheelingPlus.com in Kittitas Washington
